- 0:18Impact Hello team, welcome to the Impact Ready podcast.
- 0:25So glad you're here. In this episode we are going to
- 0:28talk about one of the things to potentially remedy in your life
- 0:34in order for you to have more powerful impact.
- 0:37For all of us to have more powerful impact 'cause this is a
- 0:41very common thing. You know, I like talking about
- 0:45all the ways to have a quality life and to have quality
- 0:48influence in our life, but I also like to address the things
- 0:52that get in the way of that. And I always think that if you
- 0:56don't know what gets in the way, you often don't have a full
- 0:59picture of how effective you are.
- 1:02You have blind spots. And today I want to talk about
- 1:06something that massively obstructs our ability to have
- 1:10powerful impact. It gets in the way of us being
- 1:13able to create a life that feels joyful and peaceful and fun.
- 1:18It gets in the way of us creating opportunity or wealth.
- 1:21It keeps us from being as productive as we could be, as
- 1:24effective as we could be. It breeds resentment and anger
- 1:29and frustration in US. And all of those feelings are
- 1:34major energy leaks. Energy sucks.
- 1:37Places where we just drain energy without even knowing it
- 1:40because we're giving it to something that is constantly
- 1:43running in the back of our mind. And what I'm talking about, it's
- 1:47something we are pretty familiar with, maybe not overtly, but I
- 1:52guarantee you've experienced it at some point, is the scorecard.
- 1:56We are going to talk about the scorecard today in this episode.
- 2:02The scorecard is this little invisible mental score sheet in
- 2:07our minds where we keep track of all the things that we are doing
- 2:12right or wrong and that we keep track of all the other things
- 2:16that people are doing right or wrong in our lives.
- 2:18This could be a scorecard between US and our spouse or us
- 2:23and our colleagues or our boss or even our own children.
- 2:28The scorecard, they exist in our marriages, in our work
- 2:31relationships. We could have them in business
- 2:33partnerships. And like I said, we can even
- 2:36have them in parenting. And if you're not familiar with
- 2:39what I'm talking about, think of a time in a relationship where
- 2:42you might have felt resentful or frustrated because you did
- 2:47something for somebody and they didn't return the favor.
- 2:51They didn't reciprocate, and it really bothered you.
- 2:55And you've been thinking about it for months or even years.
- 3:00Think about a time when maybe you empty the dishwasher every
- 3:04day in a specific week and you noticed that your spouse wasn't
- 3:08emptying the dishwasher at all. In fact, they weren't even
- 3:10cleaning the kitchen. You knew exactly how many times
- 3:14you've emptied the dishwasher and you have been watching to
- 3:18see if they even attempted to put away some of that
- 3:21silverware. That's the mental scorecard.
- 3:24Think about a time where you have been putting a tremendous
- 3:27amount of work in on a project and your other team members have
- 3:31been skating by and they haven't been investing as much time or
- 3:34energy into this project as you have.
- 3:36And you know exactly how many hours you put in and you know
- 3:39exactly how many hours they've put in.
- 3:41And it is pissing you off. That is the scorecard.
- 3:45It's basically where we keep track of all the wrongs and all
- 3:49the rights between you and another person.
- 3:52It's tracking. It's tracking who's the more
- 3:55noble or giving one. It's keeping score of who does
- 3:58the most labor in a relationship, be it physical
- 4:01labor or even emotional labor. If you have teenagers or you've
- 4:06been ever been around teenagers or you have a sibling, you know
- 4:10this occurrence in your own life because it's really common.
- 4:13It's all about what's fair. Everything has to be equal.
- 4:18Siblings have a permanent scorecard running in their minds
- 4:21of all the rights and all the wrongs that have occurred
- 4:23between them and their siblings. It is constant.
- 4:28It's also very problematic, especially as adults, when we
- 4:31have this mental scorecard running in our minds all of the
- 4:34time. There's two big things that
- 4:36stand out to me when I think about the scorecard in
- 4:39relationships, by the way. It's a really common human
- 4:42experience, and I often wonder if this is a thing that even
- 4:46ancient humans experienced because it's such a part of our
- 4:50psyche. But let's talk about the two big
- 4:52problems that happened with the scorecard.
- 4:55The first thing is, when you're keeping a mental scorecard,
- 4:58there are no winners. There's no winners because when
- 5:04you're keeping score, it means that you're looking for
- 5:06opportunities to paint the other person as the opponent, which
- 5:10inevitably means you're not a team.
- 5:13Teammates don't play against each other.
- 5:16They work towards a common goal. They work together.
- 5:20And so by nature, a scorecard insinuates that you are
- 5:24opponents. And The thing is, in the game of
- 5:28relationships, there are no winners.
- 5:30With scorecards, say you're keeping track of who does the
- 5:34most in the home or in the work environment or in the
- 5:37relationship, and say you are the one who's got the quote UN
- 5:41quote higher score. Does that mean you've won?
- 5:45No, because all you've won is resentment towards the other
- 5:49person, and if you aren't resenting them, they're for sure
- 5:52resenting you. Because nobody feels good when
- 5:55they're told that they're not doing enough or the other person
- 5:58is doing more. Nobody wins or feels good when
- 6:01the other person is the bad guy. When you are opponents, when
- 6:05you're supposed to be a team. Nobody wins when the expense of
- 6:09winning is that the other person feels on the outside of the
- 6:13winning circle. In this constant battle to be
- 6:16right, you're damaging a relationship with somebody who
- 6:20you're supposed to have quality connection with, and that is a
- 6:23massive price to pay just to have the upper hand.
- 6:27The second thing that stands out to me about the scorecard is
- 6:30that it's perpetual problem energy.
- 6:34And just a little brush up on problem energy.
- 6:36It's a place where you are feeling low frequency emotions,
- 6:40feelings like resentment or anger or frustration comparison,
- 6:45jealousy, bitterness, any of those emotions will measure very
- 6:49low on the emotional scale in terms of hurts.
- 6:52And if you remember, one of the key things about problem energy
- 6:56is that you cannot get to solution from that place.
- 7:01That's the crazy thing about problem energy versus solution
- 7:04energy. They're not the same frequency,
- 7:07and therefore you cannot be in both places at the same time.
- 7:10When you're thinking about all the things that somebody has
- 7:13done wrong or not done enough or that you've done better, there's
- 7:17no way for you to be in a place of curiosity or appreciation or
- 7:22gratitude where you feel like you're a team.
- 7:25There's no way that you can get to solution or any place where
- 7:29there might be resolution. And this is an important topic
- 7:31because in so many of our lives, we have relationships where we
- 7:35have an ongoing invisible scorecard.
- 7:38It takes up a lot of our mental energy.
- 7:40It is a major energy leak. So much of our mental bandwidth
- 7:44goes to wanting to be right or proving the other person wrong,
- 7:48and it breaks apart our connection to those people.
- 7:51It leaves us in a place where we have less energy available to
- 7:55us. We have less quality connection.
- 7:58We have less people on our team. We have an emotional garden full
- 8:03of weeds like bitterness and resentment and anger and
- 8:07frustration. And it moves us away from our
- 8:09goals. It moves us away from being able
- 8:12to reach our desires and create the life that we want.
- 8:16And so my challenge this week is to think about the relationships
- 8:19in your life, the ones that are most important to you, and ask
- 8:23yourself, do I have an invisible scorecard in this relationship?
- 8:27If you do ditch the scorecard, just let it drop because
- 8:32remember, there is no solution. There is no resolution when
- 8:36you're in a place of problem energy.
- 8:38There are no winners when that person is your opponent and not
- 8:42your teammate. And all of that energy is going
- 8:44to slow you down in terms of your progress, in terms of your
- 8:48effectiveness and your productivity, and also just the
- 8:51amount of joy and appreciation that you have in your life.
- 8:55Those are the things that we really desire.
- 8:57We want a peaceful, joyful life where we're excited about what's
- 9:01going on. We want those good feelings, and
- 9:04we have to start removing the blockades to getting there.
- 9:08So find out where you're keeping score, throw that scorecard out
- 9:12and make your opponents your teammates this week.
- 9:15I hope this helps. I hope this inspires some new
- 9:18thought for you. Thank you for being here and for
