- 0:55OK, so first let's briefly define what an avoidant is.
- 1:01Avoidant attachment is a survival adaptation.
- 1:05So depending on your circumstances when you were
- 1:07growing up, you either became approval seeking and developed
- 1:11an anxious attachment style, which if you're dating an
- 1:15avoidant, there's a very high probability that you do have an
- 1:18anxious attachment style or you adapted by saying, well, I'm
- 1:22just going to stay away from everyone.
- 1:24And that ladies and gentlemen, is an avoidant.
- 1:28Avoidance are hyper vigilant, always assessing risk.
- 1:32They prefer to be self-sufficient and independent.
- 1:34It's very hard for them to trust anyone.
- 1:37So the best thing to do when dealing with an avoidant is to
- 1:42learn to speak their language. So just as if you were in
- 1:46another country, the locals always appreciate and prefer if
- 1:50you can speak their language. Well, guess what?
- 1:53Same thing here. So when it comes to risk, you
- 1:57can say something like, I understand there's a lot of
- 2:01risks, and if you and I work together, we can build a deeper
- 2:05connection and manage the risks together.
- 2:08That language makes sense to an avoidant.
- 2:10You're speaking their language. You can also propose clear
- 2:15solutions to things. I've noticed a problem with XYZ.
- 2:20What do you think about blah blah blah?
- 2:23Or I've noticed there's a problem with me and I'm not sure
- 2:26how to fix it. Can you give me some honest
- 2:28feedback as to what I can do to improve this?
- 2:32And by speaking like this, they'll begin to bond with you,
- 2:35which is not easy for an avoidant.
- 2:39So you are now an ally and not a potential enemy.
- 2:42Because you're solving problems together.
- 2:45You're becoming useful to them and they will be less likely to
- 2:49want to get away from you. They'll start to trust you more,
- 2:53and the more they trust you again, the less likely they are
- 2:56to run away from you. Now, something else to keep in
- 3:00mind is that avoidance will often break up with you and say
- 3:04that they don't think they can give you what you're looking for
- 3:06when you haven't even talked about what you're looking for.
- 3:09And This is why you have to be very clear as to exactly what
- 3:13you're looking for and how often.
- 3:16Meaning how often do you want to see them, for how long, when,
- 3:19etcetera, etcetera. Lay everything out.
- 3:22This will help them to feel less pressured and it lowers their
- 3:25need to get away from you and to take space and run away.
- 3:29They need to see you as low risk.
- 3:33Remember, they're always assessing risk and that's the
- 3:36only way that you're going to stop them from running away.
- 3:39And by the way, if you're finding this helpful so far, I
- 3:42would appreciate if you would give this video a like so that
- 3:45the YouTube algorithm will say, wow, a lot of people like this
- 3:49video. Maybe we should recommend it to
- 3:51other people. Thank you.
- 3:55So This is why I suggest that every week you sit down and take
- 3:59the temperature of the relationship.
- 4:01What do I mean by that? I tell this to all my clients.
- 4:04You want to discuss the things that made you happy with your
- 4:07partner that week. And then you want to discuss the
- 4:10things that you weren't so thrilled about because sweeping
- 4:13things under the rug is not going to make issues go away.
- 4:17But by discussing everything, putting everything on the table,
- 4:20and finally finding a mutually agreed upon solution, then you
- 4:28won't have any issues because you're discussing everything
- 4:30every week. You're not sweeping things out
- 4:33of the rug. Now you've heard of love
- 4:36languages. Probably most people seem to
- 4:38have heard of the book Love Languages.
- 4:41Well, for most, avoidance, their love language is when you help
- 4:44them avoid and manage risk. And you will.
- 4:48If you do that, you'll be the first person who has ever
- 4:51understood them and who cannot help but fall in love with
- 4:55someone who understands them and cares for them no matter what
- 4:58their attachment style is, right?
- 5:00We all want someone who understands us and cares for us.
- 5:05So, as I've mentioned before, think of avoidance as a feral
- 5:08cat by agreeing to date you or be in a relationship with you or
- 5:13even marry you. What marriage?
- 5:16You managed to get the feral cat into the house, but it's
- 5:20sticking close to the door. One wrong move and it's out.
- 5:25So if you try to give too much too soon or to lock them down,
- 5:29they will run back outside. So make your expectations very
- 5:34clear from the beginning. Because in having unclear
- 5:38expectations when they aren't met, you're going to become
- 5:40anxious and needy, and then that is going to push the avoidance
- 5:44away. So you say I need this.
- 5:46Is that OK? I only need this much.
- 5:48Will that work? Say something like, I just need
- 5:53a good morning text and I don't need to hear from you the rest
- 5:56of the day until the evening. Is that OK?
- 6:00And if you've ever dealt with an avoidance, you know that they
- 6:02need a lot of space, right? I'm an avoidant.
- 6:05I'm an avoidant. I need my space, lots of space.
- 6:08So it's crucial that you let them know it's OK to take space
- 6:13and just to let you know when they're taking it.
- 6:15Otherwise you're going to take it personally and you're going
- 6:18to pull away. And, and as an avoidance, I can
- 6:20tell you it's not about you. It's not you, it's me.
- 6:24We need our space. It has nothing to do with you.
- 6:27No matter how much we love you, we, we, we still need that
- 6:30space. So when there's a conflict or
- 6:32disagreement, let them know that you're there to solve it
- 6:35together and you're on the same team as them.
- 6:38You're not an adversary, Adversary can't talk to them and
- 6:42avoidant will love you. And do not chase them when they
- 6:48pull away. I know your instinct is going to
- 6:50be to chase after them, especially if you have an
- 6:52anxious attachment style and you need to temper that instinct.
- 6:57You can, if you want, leave them a message acknowledging that
- 7:00they pulled away and let them know that you'll be there for
- 7:03them when they're ready to come back.
- 7:05And I'm not talking about a break up here, I'm talking about
- 7:07if they pull away for a day or two.
- 7:09And this is if you're in a relationship, if you're just
- 7:12dating casually, if you're not exclusive, then don't do this.
- 7:15Because if you're not in a relationship, they can pull away
- 7:18as much as they want, right? So talk everything through with
- 7:22them in a clear, rational way. Be honest and open and don't
- 7:26leave things unsaid. And this will make them feel
- 7:29safe. The goal is to show them that
- 7:32you're not going to hurt them. And when you do that, you become
- 7:35their Peace of Mind, which is what everyone is looking for,
- 7:40whether they're aware of that or not.
- 7:42And why would you ever leave someone who brings you Peace of
- 7:44Mind? But first, you have to do the
- 7:48work on yourself. You have to be at peace.
- 7:50You can't bring peace to someone else if you yourself is not at
- 7:53peace, if you yourself are not at peace.
- 7:57So if you're with an avoid and you want to have a successful
- 8:02relationship with them, do the work to make yourself secure.
- 8:06If you have an anxious attachment style.
- 8:08And in behaving this way, their avoidant attachment will begin
- 8:14to be healed because someone will finally be loving them the
- 8:18way that they want to be loved. They'll start to believe in
- 8:22love. The feral cat will stop running
- 8:25and start purring. So now I want to hear from you.
- 8:29If you're dating an avoidant, leave a comment below or if you
