- 1:38Speaker 2: Talk to you soon. Hey tolerators, listens to all the
- 2:02Speaker 2: men I've tolerated before with Pample Katona, your weekly look
- 2:06Speaker 2: at every day misogyny. Our guest today is my new
- 2:10Speaker 2: friend Satoria, who is in my accountability group for the
- 2:13Speaker 2: Behind the Veins writing workshop I'm in with the wonderful
- 2:16Speaker 2: Chelsea Davontez. Satoria was kind enough to give me a
- 2:19Speaker 2: reason to call watching Sailor Moon work and has chosen
- 2:24Speaker 2: that as our topic today. Hey friend, welcome, Hello, Thank
- 2:29Speaker 2: you for having me. The literal intro is the only
- 2:33Speaker 2: scripted part of the show, and it is always the
- 2:36Speaker 2: part that I mess up.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Wow, that's the universe just telling you something.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like, girl, you're an improv actress. You are
- 2:44Speaker 2: not an Academy Award winning actress. You gotta stop. So,
- 2:53Speaker 2: uh go ahead, your new friend to the listeners, introduce
- 2:57Speaker 2: yourself and give the tolerators a look into who you are.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Oh, no pressure, Okay, Hi, I'm Victoria. Nice to meet
- 3:06Speaker 3: you all. I am a library by day side note,
- 3:11Speaker 3: September is library cards sign out months, which might be
- 3:15Speaker 3: past September when you're hearing this, but you can sign
- 3:17Speaker 3: up for a library cards year round fun stuff. I
- 3:22Speaker 3: am also a writer. My background is in poetry, but
- 3:27Speaker 3: I'm breaching out into fiction and memoir. No, I haven't
- 3:31Speaker 3: finished either book yet. Stop asking please, that's very rude.
- 3:37Speaker 3: That's how that's going. And I love Stay the Moon
- 3:40Speaker 3: because I grew up in the nineties and she was
- 3:45Speaker 3: there and just really fun and great.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I'm so glad that you told everyone I haven't finished.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Stop being rude, because I've been practicing my Oh, what
- 3:55Speaker 2: do you do? And then me going, oh, I'm a
- 3:58Speaker 2: comedy writer I write, and them going oh, what have
- 4:01Speaker 2: we seen of yours? And me going I didn't say
- 4:04Speaker 2: I was an employed writer. I said I was a writer.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Well, my background is in poetry. So if you ever
- 4:13Speaker 3: talk them when you're a poet, you don't get a
- 4:15Speaker 3: follow up questions like that.
- 4:18Speaker 2: You do when you're a comedy writer. People are like,
- 4:20Speaker 2: you go to the lab factory and it's like, no,
- 4:24Speaker 2: believe me. If I had, you would have seen me
- 4:27Speaker 2: on TikTok. I don't know, and then it sounds very amasive,
- 4:32Speaker 2: but yeah, everyone stopped being so interested in us. Get
- 4:38Speaker 2: a light, guys, Get a light. Also a special book
- 4:45Speaker 2: for the library, Little Miss Sunshine no longer streams. You
- 4:50Speaker 2: have to rent to and or buy it. And that's
- 4:52Speaker 2: devastating to me personally. I don't know how anyone else
- 4:56Speaker 2: felt hearing that, but devastating news. And yesterday it just
- 5:01Speaker 2: occurred to me while I was doing my morning pages.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I was like, I guess I could do what other
- 5:06Speaker 2: people do and use the library as my blockbluster.
- 5:12Speaker 3: You sure could. Hey, I'm gonna blow your mind. Did
- 5:15Speaker 3: you know the library has a streaming service.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's called like Kobelui, that's what it's called.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Uh, it's called Canopy.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, O K though yeah really k yeah?
- 5:28Speaker 3: So hey, I don't I don't know. I don't know
- 5:30Speaker 3: if Little the Sunshine's on there, but it could be.
- 5:32Speaker 3: It could be, but a Little the Sunshine great film side.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Also, you can get physical DVDs at the library. I
- 5:39Speaker 2: used to in the early OS before we had netflips
- 5:45Speaker 2: and Blockbuster banned me from all of their locations due
- 5:48Speaker 2: to late fees and my inability to pay them.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Oh, you should come up with a better story than that,
- 5:53Speaker 3: like like I thought you were going to be Like
- 5:56Speaker 3: Blackbuster banned me because I went off on one of
- 6:00Speaker 3: the workers or something like that, like because I committed
- 6:04Speaker 3: violence in one of the aisles.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Because I kept telling the clerics at the desk why
- 6:10Speaker 2: the Virgin Suicides and Welcome to the Dollhouse were just
- 6:13Speaker 2: perfect teenage girl viewing over and over.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Again because I destroyed all their woody Adam films and
- 6:22Speaker 3: tell them why I was an activist sports school before
- 6:26Speaker 3: it was cool.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Oh, Sailor Moon? Can I tell you the Did I
- 6:32Speaker 2: tell you how I ended up watching Sailor Moon the
- 6:35Speaker 2: most As a kid. Now, I would go to a
- 6:39Speaker 2: babysitters after school, and she didn't want to deal with
- 6:43Speaker 2: us older kids at all. She really enjoyed the toddlers
- 6:46Speaker 2: and the babies that she babysat, and we were just
- 6:49Speaker 2: the kids that came over to ruin her day at
- 6:51Speaker 2: three thirty. So she would put us in her basement
- 6:55Speaker 2: with like a tiny glass of water and a teeny
- 7:00Speaker 2: tiny TV and we would watch Sailor Moon on Cartoon
- 7:03Speaker 2: Network until my mom mixed me up.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Oh man, that that is just the childhood of a millennial.
- 7:13Speaker 2: A millennial and the babysitter was in my neighborhood, so
- 7:18Speaker 2: I did take like the school bus to her. And
- 7:21Speaker 2: one day I just got off the bus and sat
- 7:23Speaker 2: on my own porch and my mom was like, I.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Think I don't I don't think I need the basement anymore. Mom,
- 7:30Speaker 3: I think the pitch is fine.
- 7:31Speaker 2: The porch was fine. And those before selvos were a thing.
- 7:36Speaker 2: So like all Leslie, my babysit your name was, I
- 7:38Speaker 2: did not show up and there's very limited ways to
- 7:42Speaker 2: contact me or my mother.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And did Leslie contact anyone?
- 7:49Speaker 2: You know, it's hard to say. I just remember, like
- 7:52Speaker 2: I was a very defiant kid. But when I was defiant,
- 7:56Speaker 2: I was like, that's it. Today, I'm just gonna sit
- 7:58Speaker 2: on the porch. I can't deal with this lady anymore.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I've had enough.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I've had enough.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Yeah, not enough snacks or water, but enough of Leslie.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And then two days of the week I got to
- 8:09Speaker 2: go across the street after the porch defiance, I got
- 8:12Speaker 2: to go across the street with the old nice couple
- 8:15Speaker 2: whose cat was named Bigaro from Pinocchio, and they would
- 8:19Speaker 2: make me the best tax of my life while I
- 8:21Speaker 2: watched the Disney channel of course.
- 8:24Speaker 3: They got a cat named Figaro. They're good people. They're
- 8:27Speaker 3: good people.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I would watch like the goof Troop whatever was going
- 8:29Speaker 2: on cartoon wise in the early two thousands. True, oh yeah,
- 8:35Speaker 2: and like Rescue Rangers and probably Ducktails woo uh yeah.
- 8:41Speaker 2: So that's how I how did you get started with
- 8:43Speaker 2: Sailor Moon?
- 8:45Speaker 3: I saw it was part of like morning cartoons on
- 8:49Speaker 3: not I don't know if it was Cartoon Network, but
- 8:52Speaker 3: it was some morning cartoon like once a week, so
- 8:55Speaker 3: probably a weekend cartoon. And it was like, you know,
- 8:59Speaker 3: back in the day where he didn't see it, he
- 9:02Speaker 3: didn't see it, good luck, you know, your life was
- 9:06Speaker 3: ruined for that week. And and I think I only
- 9:12Speaker 3: saw like maybe a couple episodes of the first season,
- 9:15Speaker 3: and and then you just were chasing, chasing the dream
- 9:19Speaker 3: of finding this beautiful series again. And I think later
- 9:24Speaker 3: on it started airing I think on Cartoon Network in
- 9:27Speaker 3: the evenings when I was older and had a TV
- 9:30Speaker 3: in my room and could watch it. Then Tonami shout
- 9:34Speaker 3: out to Tona me. But so that's but I saw
- 9:38Speaker 3: it really young, and I just thought it was the
- 9:41Speaker 3: coolest thing in the world because it was girls fighting.
- 9:45Speaker 3: You know evil, and it was like they were all
- 9:49Speaker 3: friends and they had the cutest hair, the cutest outfits
- 9:54Speaker 3: and yeah, and it was like and it was also
- 9:57Speaker 3: just I think it was one of the probably the
- 10:00Speaker 3: sides maybe Dragon Ball D what are the first animes
- 10:03Speaker 3: I've ever seen? So it was really cool.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And then did you become an anime fan? Like do
- 10:09Speaker 2: you anime or whatever they call it?
- 10:13Speaker 3: I do like anime. I'm not like an anime scholar
- 10:16Speaker 3: per se, but I do like it. I definitely appreciate
- 10:21Speaker 3: how streaming has like brought anime to the masses. Here
- 10:25Speaker 3: by the masses, I guess I'm in America, US in
- 10:30Speaker 3: the West. You know, it's been really cool to see
- 10:33Speaker 3: like because you couldn't, Like you really just didn't. We
- 10:37Speaker 3: just didn't have access to it as a kid, Like
- 10:40Speaker 3: and for a while, if you didn't have a subscription
- 10:42Speaker 3: to like Sushi Roal, you just really got very limited access.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I mean, to me, love it or hate it, that
- 10:50Speaker 3: was almost all you got to see as a kid.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I was a Pokemon early. I had the cards. My
- 11:00Speaker 2: grandfather owned a hobby shop, so I was in the
- 11:03Speaker 2: Pokemon League. Like I did have a badge that was
- 11:07Speaker 2: very a fish. But we were like we were a
- 11:11Speaker 2: big geek family. Like remember POGs, like these stupid kids
- 11:17Speaker 2: with their dumb ass jackass uh stunts that they pull
- 11:22Speaker 2: on tiktat And I saw also with Coba on one
- 11:26Speaker 2: of the Do you guys miss POGs? Do you remember pots?
- 11:31Speaker 3: Yeah? No, I don't miss them. I don't remember them.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And no I do not miss them. Oh I miss
- 11:36Speaker 2: them because I love a little stupid thing that comes
- 11:39Speaker 2: into in a variety of different shape things. Yeah, like,
- 11:44Speaker 2: oh there are Disney POGs, there are scary movie POGs.
- 11:48Speaker 2: There are oh I love uh during the Magic Hour
- 11:52Speaker 2: for behind the Bans, I did coin the term I'm
- 11:55Speaker 2: a tramp for a trinket.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, we need the merch for that. First.
- 12:00Speaker 2: You do need the merch for that. And that's how
- 12:02Speaker 2: Claire's used to get me with all of those boxes
- 12:04Speaker 2: that could contain nothing.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Yeah, they were big enough to hold nothing, absolutely nothing,
- 12:12Speaker 3: but they were so cute.
- 12:13Speaker 2: They were so cute, and they were a different one
- 12:16Speaker 2: every month. And I am a child.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe I do need all of them.
- 12:22Speaker 2: But yeah, so Pokemon Leak and Sailor Moon And that's
- 12:25Speaker 2: where I ended with anime because and I think I
- 12:28Speaker 2: disclosed this to you on our like zoom pre meat,
- 12:34Speaker 2: where I was like, oh, here's the thing, or no,
- 12:36Speaker 2: I did it. We didn't even have that. We just
- 12:38Speaker 2: emailed back and forth. I haven't told you, Mike, gross
- 12:41Speaker 2: connection to anime. All of the weird boys of my
- 12:45Speaker 2: high school liked anime, and they only ever talked about
- 12:47Speaker 2: like the girls and their boobs and how you saw
- 12:50Speaker 2: their underwear all the time. And I was like, anime
- 12:54Speaker 2: is gross. It's for perverts, and it's for guys with
- 12:58Speaker 2: bad skin. So I never watched it. And I and again,
- 13:04Speaker 2: there's so much content out there, there's no way I
- 13:07Speaker 2: could ever watch all things I.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Think you are. I think you're spreading very harmful huh
- 13:15Speaker 3: and quite frankly hateful stereotypes about anime lover.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I apologize to all of anime. The context is that
- 13:30Speaker 2: I grew up in northwest Indiana. Okay, just fields of
- 13:36Speaker 2: white people and corn. That's all we've got here. So
- 13:40Speaker 2: when I tell you.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Oh, I think yeah, I mean, I think that was
- 13:44Speaker 3: the stereotype back in the day. But and there wasn't
- 13:47Speaker 3: like a whole lot of I didn't know many girls
- 13:51Speaker 3: that watched anything anime, But I think Pokemon was the
- 13:54Speaker 3: big crossover because I think everyone loved Pokemon, and I
- 13:57Speaker 3: think everyone still does for the most part, right frankly,
- 14:01Speaker 3: because they're just so dan cute.
- 14:05Speaker 2: I do have every Game Boy color version of the
- 14:08Speaker 2: Pokemon game, where it was all the same game, but
- 14:10Speaker 2: like sometimes it was red and sometimes it was blue,
- 14:12Speaker 2: and then crystal it was multi color and we all
- 14:15Speaker 2: freaked out. And I will say that, like, looking back
- 14:18Speaker 2: on Pokemon, it didn't have a lot of those gross
- 14:22Speaker 2: things that eventually got embedded in my head as a
- 14:24Speaker 2: teenager who had to like pretend to be attracted to boys.
- 14:30Speaker 2: But Sailor Moon I was rewatching it these past couple
- 14:34Speaker 2: of weeks and I was like, damn, Animation truly is
- 14:41Speaker 2: the one place that we get women in the forefront
- 14:46Speaker 2: of the story, and they actually allowed those women to
- 14:50Speaker 2: be feminine and girly and bratty sometimes like all three,
- 14:57Speaker 2: Like all of the episodes I watched of Sailor Moon.
- 14:59Speaker 2: In the middle of the episode, she's like, I'm tired
- 15:02Speaker 2: and I need a nap, and then she cries until
- 15:04Speaker 2: someone brings her a stack. She gets to take a nap,
- 15:07Speaker 2: and I'm like, I love that.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I loved that. Like looking back on it, like
- 15:12Speaker 3: she was a terrible student, Like she failed all her
- 15:16Speaker 3: exams and she was eating constantly. I mean she she
- 15:22Speaker 3: was like rail thin. They're all rail fin. There's no
- 15:24Speaker 3: fat representation, but I mean nothing's perfect. But like she
- 15:30Speaker 3: was constantly eating. And I don't really remember that getting.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I mean it could be wrong. I haven't done like
- 15:38Speaker 3: a complete rewatch, but like that wasn't like a big deal.
- 15:42Speaker 3: It was just like she just was hungry, so she
- 15:45Speaker 3: just ate and it was like, yeah, she eats a
- 15:48Speaker 3: lot what she does, and like she just was a
- 15:51Speaker 3: huge klutz and it was all fine. It was like
- 15:55Speaker 3: that's who she is, and it's kind of adorable.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Her superhero mentor is her own talking cat, and that
- 16:08Speaker 2: cat's never telling her that she's doing a bad The
- 16:11Speaker 2: cat's never telling her that she's doing a great job.
- 16:13Speaker 2: But the cat is also never telling her like superheroes
- 16:16Speaker 2: actually have to make good grades and they don't shop,
- 16:19Speaker 2: like we have to do something else I have well,
- 16:23Speaker 2: and the.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Cat's like the cat is like disappointed. She's always like
- 16:27Speaker 3: are you kidding me? And like but also like maybe
- 16:31Speaker 3: next time.
- 16:34Speaker 2: And I started to think of like parallels. I was like, no,
- 16:37Speaker 2: I have seen those before. We do like to give
- 16:40Speaker 2: the television of the nineties and os like no grace
- 16:44Speaker 2: at all when it comes to female representation. And I
- 16:47Speaker 2: was like, but we have had this track before where
- 16:50Speaker 2: it's like women are feminine and cute and girly and
- 16:53Speaker 2: then they're also fighting monsters in crime and we have
- 16:57Speaker 2: it like Josie and the Pussycats and jem and mine
- 17:01Speaker 2: was the brain of the teenage Witch.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Recently I got sucked into a cartoon that as a
- 17:08Speaker 2: full grown adult in my upper twenties, I was waking
- 17:11Speaker 2: up on Saturday to watch the Tangled cartoon because it's
- 17:14Speaker 2: so cute. And then it was called like Star for
- 17:20Speaker 2: Star against the Forces of Evil in the World or something,
- 17:24Speaker 2: and again it was a big sailor Moon type deal
- 17:27Speaker 2: where it's like she's just a girl who's in a
- 17:30Speaker 2: comic book and she's all feminine and girly and cutesy,
- 17:33Speaker 2: but she's fighting prime the entire time. And it was
- 17:35Speaker 2: the funny shit I had ever seen. And I used
- 17:38Speaker 2: to wake up early on Saturdays to catch it on Disney.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Oh that's dedication as an adult, I can know early
- 17:45Speaker 3: to watch something. Yeah, I mean I liked that, Like
- 17:50Speaker 3: it was very much like she wasn't it was repetitive
- 17:54Speaker 3: because it was always like she's the worst, she can't
- 17:57Speaker 3: do anything right, but she always say the day at
- 18:01Speaker 3: the end, she somehow pulls it out, like you know,
- 18:05Speaker 3: she she's all powerful because she's like the reincarnation of
- 18:08Speaker 3: the Moon Princess. And I do think part of it
- 18:13Speaker 3: was like my session with the Moon too. I was like, oh,
- 18:16Speaker 3: it's like, you know, pull it all aspects in there,
- 18:20Speaker 3: and they all have like it's like all of the
- 18:22Speaker 3: Sailor Scouts have a color and they all have like
- 18:26Speaker 3: one is like it's probably the Spice girls, Like one
- 18:29Speaker 3: is very sporty and one is very smart, and one
- 18:33Speaker 3: is kind of flirty. And Sailor Moon's the leader of
- 18:38Speaker 3: the gang because there has to be a leader and
- 18:40Speaker 3: the girl. I was watching one of the movies that's
- 18:46Speaker 3: on Netflix right now and last night, and like their
- 18:51Speaker 3: powers are so funny, Like one of them, Sailor Neptune,
- 18:56Speaker 3: plays a violin and that's the manifestation of her power,
- 19:01Speaker 3: and it just cracked me up so much. I was like,
- 19:05Speaker 3: I love this, this is so great, and I forgot.
- 19:11Speaker 3: I mean, I remember the like gender fluidity of it all,
- 19:15Speaker 3: but like as a kid, obviously a lot of that
- 19:18Speaker 3: went over my head. But now I look at it
- 19:21Speaker 3: and I'm like, wow, there's a lot of this in here.
- 19:27Speaker 2: There is. And also it was just refreshing to actually
- 19:32Speaker 2: reflect back on the cartoons that I had watched growing
- 19:35Speaker 2: up and going like, oh, no, things that I enjoyed.
- 19:39Speaker 2: I actually think that it's actually twenty twenty five, in
- 19:42Speaker 2: these past five issuars that have a drought on girlhood television. Now,
- 19:48Speaker 2: I did say a TikTok that was like, you're actually raw,
- 19:50Speaker 2: and you're just no longer the target our audience for
- 19:53Speaker 2: girlhood television. So you don't know it, but like my
- 19:57Speaker 2: premor movie is like now and then and then you
- 20:00Speaker 2: like bring in Sailor Moon and Sabrina the Teenage Witch
- 20:05Speaker 2: and all of these shows that sure there were men around,
- 20:10Speaker 2: and there was even like cute flirtations at love interest
- 20:16Speaker 2: and love triangles and things like that, but they were
- 20:18Speaker 2: like heading up the show, and it was it was
- 20:22Speaker 2: so nice to see that, like the reason why a
- 20:24Speaker 2: lot of my personality is like no, screw you, femininity
- 20:30Speaker 2: and glitter pens and all of it is very cool.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Is because I grew up in the Lisa Frank era
- 20:37Speaker 2: of it all, where all of that was on TV
- 20:39Speaker 2: because they had to sell us stuff.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Shout out to that rainbow whale and the ocean just
- 20:47Speaker 3: doing flips.
- 20:49Speaker 2: The leopard. We all remember that leopard.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Oh I love it. I loved it all. Still do.
- 20:55Speaker 2: You can still find it? And I'm like, I'm about
- 20:57Speaker 2: to spend too much funny.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I know, and she's still well, she's still doing like
- 21:02Speaker 3: brand deals, I think, and like kind of have a
- 21:04Speaker 3: research us.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Yes, And I wish that girls nowadays and I get
- 21:11Speaker 2: that they're starting to find our old media and they're like,
- 21:15Speaker 2: this is the first time I'm watching One Tree Hill.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Well it's an inside joke, I'll finally get or whatever.
- 21:22Speaker 2: And they're thanks to streaming, they're starting to find it.
- 21:25Speaker 2: But I do think that because of stream streaming, we've
- 21:28Speaker 2: had such a lazy approach to female media that I'm like,
- 21:33Speaker 2: where's the sailor Moon of today? Except for now? I
- 21:36Speaker 2: know because it's K pop Demon Hunters, Yes, I know.
- 21:41Speaker 3: So I watched it to get ready for this, and
- 21:43Speaker 3: I know it was like number it was on my
- 21:45Speaker 3: list already because it was number one. Everybody's been talking
- 21:48Speaker 3: about it and yes, oh my gosh, it was so
- 21:52Speaker 3: good and the songs. I was like, this is where
- 21:56Speaker 3: it is, and Saytherman didn't have like it did have
- 21:59Speaker 3: to have music in it, and it had great intro songs,
- 22:03Speaker 3: great every now and then you'd have like a singing
- 22:06Speaker 3: aspect to it. But this was like it wasn't a
- 22:11Speaker 3: musical like Kate Pops even Hunters is. But yeah, I
- 22:15Speaker 3: loved it. I was like, this is why this is
- 22:18Speaker 3: number one, and truly it is part of the revolution.
- 22:21Speaker 3: I was.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I went downstairs to make myself some lunch and it
- 22:25Speaker 2: was one of those nice days where like all of
- 22:26Speaker 2: the windows are open because there's an actual breeze that's
- 22:29Speaker 2: not just human air, like humid air being blown. Yeah,
- 22:33Speaker 2: it was part of Fossball as the album. It was
- 22:36Speaker 2: that one nice week we had in September, you know,
- 22:39Speaker 2: the one I do. I was, I know, and I
- 22:42Speaker 2: was like micro Wily be my lunch or whatever, and
- 22:44Speaker 2: all of a sudden, I just started singing one of
- 22:47Speaker 2: the K pop demon Hunter songs that I didn't even
- 22:50Speaker 2: know that I knew, and I was like but and
- 22:54Speaker 2: I was like, how come this got into my head?
- 22:57Speaker 2: And then I was like, rooster kind of sounds like
- 23:01Speaker 2: the K Pop Demon Hunters today. Why is that? Because
- 23:03Speaker 2: we have a rooster that lives a couple houses down
- 23:07Speaker 2: yards down. I don't know, I just hear him every day.
- 23:12Speaker 2: And I finally walked over to the window that like
- 23:15Speaker 2: is above my kitchen sink and I got to listening
- 23:18Speaker 2: and it was and they can't be school aged because
- 23:22Speaker 2: it was in the middle of the week, in the
- 23:23Speaker 2: middle of an afternoon, so these kids should be at school.
- 23:27Speaker 2: It's so a gaggle of three and four year olds,
- 23:31Speaker 2: like pre k year olds are just giving the concert
- 23:36Speaker 2: of their life to the K Pop Demon Hunters.
- 23:40Speaker 4: And it was so sweet and like I am a
- 23:44Speaker 4: woman who has to like think about misogyny all the
- 23:47Speaker 4: time and what we're doing to women at all times.
- 23:51Speaker 2: And I was just like, oh, the girls are gonna
- 23:53Speaker 2: be okay.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Yes, yes, Oh, I love that. That sounds so precious.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It was, and I couldn't, like, you know, you could
- 24:02Speaker 2: barely hear them. They're like three houses down. I've never
- 24:05Speaker 2: even seen these girls. My best friend was like, get
- 24:07Speaker 2: out of your house and go run and join them.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Just be a thirty year old frolicking into their yard
- 24:14Speaker 2: going soda pop, You're a best soda pop.
- 24:19Speaker 3: I was like, I buy, yeah, you definitely want to
- 24:21Speaker 3: get arrested.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Yeah, because I remember that the joy of being into
- 24:26Speaker 2: things like Sailor Moon and K pop, Demon Hunters and
- 24:29Speaker 2: the Spice Girls is you got to pick your persona
- 24:32Speaker 2: and make it your whole personality.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, And like I think that's part of like
- 24:37Speaker 3: what people As an adult now I can just like
- 24:41Speaker 3: I think of all the years I wasted not doing
- 24:44Speaker 3: that and being like I'm too cool for that when
- 24:47Speaker 3: it's like no, you just lean into stuff you like
- 24:50Speaker 3: and just have fun and enjoy it. And now it's
- 24:53Speaker 3: cool to like go to comic cons and like to
- 24:57Speaker 3: lean into the fandom and it meant that you like,
- 25:00Speaker 3: you know, and just like I don't know, it's you
- 25:03Speaker 3: spent so many years trying to like be cool, you
- 25:09Speaker 3: know what I mean. But I don't think I'm particulating
- 25:11Speaker 3: this quite that well. But like it's so annoying that
- 25:15Speaker 3: like when you realize, like, no, why am I pretending
- 25:18Speaker 3: I don't like the things that I liked fit in?
- 25:21Speaker 2: That's so stupid And maybe it's just something that I
- 25:26Speaker 2: start asking people, you know, we're having a fun party
- 25:28Speaker 2: or a dinner or whatever. And then I'm like, hey,
- 25:30Speaker 2: do you remember the last time that you stopped like playing?
- 25:34Speaker 2: Like the barbies got put away? Like you just woke
- 25:37Speaker 2: up one day and you were a thirteen year old
- 25:40Speaker 2: girl and you had no idea where your American girl
- 25:43Speaker 2: doll was, Like you stopped playing? Do you like was
- 25:47Speaker 2: it traumatic? Did someone tell us that we had to
- 25:50Speaker 2: grow up? I used to play Spice Girls in my
- 25:53Speaker 2: grandma's yard for the people driving on the street. I
- 25:57Speaker 2: was posh spice. My sister was babys because she was
- 26:00Speaker 2: the youngest, the neighbor kid. I was gott you gotta
- 26:05Speaker 2: do what you gotta do. I was posh because if
- 26:07Speaker 2: you can't be Jerry but you still have an attitude like,
- 26:10Speaker 2: but I'm the main bitch in every scenario that I've
- 26:13Speaker 2: ever encountered, then you have to be posh.
- 26:15Speaker 3: I wanted to be Jerry so bad, but I wasn't
- 26:18Speaker 3: a redhead. And you know, what can you do? Right?
- 26:21Speaker 2: You do? What can you do? I was like, I
- 26:24Speaker 2: don't want to be patchy. All she does is we're black,
- 26:26Speaker 2: and now I have to go dig out a black outfit.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I don't wear that, like and for Sailor Moon, I'm
- 26:34Speaker 2: pretty sure I was Sailor Mars. She's like the sassy,
- 26:36Speaker 2: angry one, right. Yeah, she was mad all all the
- 26:40Speaker 2: time time, and I was like, I see her and
- 26:43Speaker 2: she is me.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Yeah, she tries to. I think in like one of
- 26:46Speaker 3: the first seasons, she literally tries to like have a
- 26:50Speaker 3: revolt and like be Sailor Moon. She's like, actually, I
- 26:53Speaker 3: think I should be the leader boiler. It doesn't work out.
- 27:01Speaker 2: That's very me coded. Yeah, I would just be like,
- 27:04Speaker 2: why am I not in charge? Uh?
- 27:08Speaker 3: Like, why are we following this meatball head? For the
- 27:12Speaker 3: ones that know?
- 27:14Speaker 2: And then I think that, and then I think that
- 27:17Speaker 2: Sailor Moon immediately also transfers into u beene an astrology
- 27:22Speaker 2: girly like I was like, I should look up what
- 27:24Speaker 2: planet is in my mom like where what house my
- 27:27Speaker 2: Mars is in? And and what sign?
- 27:31Speaker 3: Yeah, oh for sure, I think it all played into
- 27:33Speaker 3: like I was obsessed with the moon with the crescent moon,
- 27:36Speaker 3: and then I love this show that's all about the
- 27:38Speaker 3: reincarnation of a moon princess and her boyfriend.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Who we didn't not see. We never saw his face
- 27:46Speaker 2: for like episodes.
- 27:48Speaker 3: China and like, and then when he comes around, it's
- 27:52Speaker 3: like he's there, but not really. And I was thinking
- 27:56Speaker 3: about it too, Like I loved that, Like a lot
- 27:57Speaker 3: of the villains are also women, so it's it's really
- 28:01Speaker 3: a show about women. I mean, I mean there's some
- 28:03Speaker 3: guys here and there, but it's it's like it's you,
- 28:08Speaker 3: I mean, Sailor Moon and her friends and then eventually
- 28:13Speaker 3: her daughter who gets to play her little sister because
- 28:17Speaker 3: she comes from the future. It's so I love the
- 28:22Speaker 3: bonkardness of the show, how it's just so nonsensical and
- 28:27Speaker 3: you just roll with it. It's so fun.
- 28:29Speaker 4: Yes.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Also, have you ever looked up the voice actor for
- 28:34Speaker 2: what's his name? Tuxedo Mask, the Mask, Mexedo Tuxedo Mask. Yes,
- 28:40Speaker 2: I haven't, No, Okay. The only reason I know who
- 28:44Speaker 2: he is is because he's on critical role in Campaign
- 28:47Speaker 2: three and is one of their guest stars. His name
- 28:49Speaker 2: is Robbie Damon. You'll know Robbie Damon because I also
- 28:53Speaker 2: always refer to him as Robbie with the good hair.
- 28:57Speaker 2: He's got good hair. He looks like a pirate and
- 29:02Speaker 2: he looks like he could be on the Pirates of
- 29:05Speaker 2: the Caribbean, but could also be Eugene from and from Tangled.
- 29:12Speaker 2: And the only reason I know he's the masked tuxedo
- 29:16Speaker 2: in one of the uh reboots of a Sailor Moon
- 29:21Speaker 2: is because they listed whatever. I'm looking up to see
- 29:24Speaker 2: what coms he's doing. I'm like, do I get to
- 29:28Speaker 2: meet Robbie Robbie Damon? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, I'm like a pirate,
- 29:36Speaker 2: doesn't he it's spelled like diamond but you do say it. No,
- 29:40Speaker 2: it's spelled like Damon and diamonds.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Is that right.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I don't know Robbie call In. We didn't get to
- 29:47Speaker 2: meet last year at gen Con. But yeah, and he's
- 29:53Speaker 2: got great hair. Yes, yes, I need everyone to know
- 30:00Speaker 2: that he has such good hair. And I don't know
- 30:05Speaker 2: which iteration of tuxedo mask he was, but he was him.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Okay, Well there's so And that's the thing, there's so
- 30:15Speaker 3: many iterations. I was trying to go back and like
- 30:20Speaker 3: like get his timeline of like the different the shows,
- 30:24Speaker 3: and I got contused very quickly. I was like, oh
- 30:26Speaker 3: my goodness, this is gonna take some scholarship work to
- 30:30Speaker 3: figure to figure this out.
- 30:32Speaker 2: But I would I felt like I had imposter syndrome
- 30:36Speaker 2: picking what I should rewatch because I was like, should
- 30:40Speaker 2: I watch the American dubbed version? Should I try to
- 30:43Speaker 2: find it in its original form and put English subtitles on?
- 30:50Speaker 2: Because I know that the actual Japanese anime is queer
- 30:54Speaker 2: and gender fluid and whatnot, and they took that all
- 30:56Speaker 2: out of the American version.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Well, you can't really find what we really watched originally.
- 31:05Speaker 3: You can't really find that anymore. I think it's really
- 31:08Speaker 3: not unless you like find some kind of like illegal
- 31:12Speaker 3: you know, someone reported this on their VHS back in
- 31:15Speaker 3: the day. Children google what a VHS player? It's because
- 31:21Speaker 3: it yeah, because.
- 31:23Speaker 4: You know it.
- 31:24Speaker 3: I think it was edited so much it's kind of
- 31:27Speaker 3: offensive at this point, you know, but we didn't know
- 31:31Speaker 3: back then. So I don't think you can actually find
- 31:34Speaker 3: that version anymore. I think I think you can only
- 31:38Speaker 3: really find you know, you can find a dubbed version,
- 31:41Speaker 3: but it's more true to the original. It's just genuinely dubbed,
- 31:46Speaker 3: of like, but still the original and the gender fluidity
- 31:49Speaker 3: and all that's the imagery and all that's still there.
- 31:52Speaker 2: I think, now, well that's good, I do. I think
- 31:56Speaker 2: it's so funny that in twenty twenty five, in the
- 31:59Speaker 2: high of fascism, people, I can't believe that this is
- 32:04Speaker 2: what's happening now. And I'm like America has also always
- 32:08Speaker 2: censored the media from other countries, like if it was
- 32:14Speaker 2: very queer or like for Okay, our neighbors in Canada.
- 32:18Speaker 2: And my favorite show, Degrassi America when it air at
- 32:23Speaker 2: the episode where Manny has an abortion, I watched it
- 32:27Speaker 2: at three am so I would complete my Degrassi knowledge medication.
- 32:33Speaker 2: I love Degrassi and I don't sleep, but everything about
- 32:37Speaker 2: the rest of Degrassi, because I do believe that there
- 32:40Speaker 2: are certain television shows where one episode dictates what we'll
- 32:44Speaker 2: do for the rest of our lives, like at One
- 32:46Speaker 2: Tree Hill, it's the episode in season three with the
- 32:49Speaker 2: school shooting. In Degrassi, I think it's Manny's abortion because
- 32:53Speaker 2: everything about Krag and Manny makes sense from that point forward.
- 33:01Speaker 3: That's that's deep.
- 33:03Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 33:04Speaker 3: I didn't watch Degrassy, so I know everyone loves it
- 33:07Speaker 3: though he's watched it. Yeah, I don't know. It's so
- 33:11Speaker 3: interesting to see, like because I didn't know at the
- 33:14Speaker 3: time how edited it was, and I still loved it.
- 33:17Speaker 3: You know, because it was just so different than any
- 33:20Speaker 3: other cartoon I had ever seen, but and then coming
- 33:25Speaker 3: back to it as an adult and being like this
- 33:28Speaker 3: is different than what I saw before. And I truly
- 33:32Speaker 3: remember like how they changed the names of like yeah,
- 33:36Speaker 3: because I guess they didn't think Americans could deal with
- 33:39Speaker 3: Japanese names, Like I don't know, it's weird to think
- 33:43Speaker 3: about now, Like how you know that just wouldn't happen.
- 33:47Speaker 3: I don't think now at all.
- 33:48Speaker 2: But like I don't think that we ever talked very
- 33:52Speaker 2: openly about how like insular American culture actually very is,
- 33:58Speaker 2: and we're always just like being told like, oh, don't
- 34:02Speaker 2: look into the history of other places and barely look
- 34:06Speaker 2: into the history of where you're living, you know, like
- 34:09Speaker 2: it's no big deal, And it's very much the same
- 34:11Speaker 2: thing where I think overseas, because they're all intermingled, and
- 34:17Speaker 2: it's like, you know, the United States is so big,
- 34:20Speaker 2: and like Indiana has a different culture than New York,
- 34:23Speaker 2: who has a different culture than la We stayed pretty insular,
- 34:28Speaker 2: but in Europe you can drive to a different country
- 34:32Speaker 2: and like get to Asia easier, and get to a
- 34:35Speaker 2: whole new continent and stuff, and just have a better
- 34:38Speaker 2: grasp of what it means to be a citizen of
- 34:41Speaker 2: the world and not just like a citizen of your country.
- 34:44Speaker 2: And I think that comes through the most when Americans.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Because you said that you thought it was funny that
- 34:50Speaker 2: America wouldn't be able to handle the Japanese name. I
- 34:54Speaker 2: know that people would have been like, I can't say
- 34:56Speaker 2: any of.
- 34:56Speaker 3: This I get, but it's so funny. It's like I
- 35:00Speaker 3: do think there's like it doesn't pan out though, because
- 35:06Speaker 3: when we get a taste of like anime is so
- 35:09Speaker 3: popular now though, and it's like all those years of
- 35:13Speaker 3: like I mean truly wasted potential earnings because people love
- 35:20Speaker 3: anime and people love manga and they just didn't give
- 35:25Speaker 3: it a chance, I think. And like, I mean it's
- 35:27Speaker 3: like scandy, you are, like, we eat that up here now.
- 35:31Speaker 3: And I think part of it is is because we
- 35:33Speaker 3: love like it's part of seeing a different like atmosphere
- 35:37Speaker 3: and different culture. It's not just you know, it's not
- 35:40Speaker 3: just a mystery. You have mysteries here sat in America,
- 35:43Speaker 3: you know. So yeah, I mean, I don't know, it's
- 35:46Speaker 3: it's interesting because we are very insular. I do agree
- 35:49Speaker 3: with that, but like when we get a taste of
- 35:51Speaker 3: something else, we love it, but then it doesn't. We
- 35:57Speaker 3: don't have the follow through. You know, I don't know
- 36:00Speaker 3: because we don't have to follow.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Through because like my geeky white ass, I love sushi,
- 36:07Speaker 2: fuck me up with some bobo tea. I love a
- 36:09Speaker 2: bobo tea. But I know that if I went to
- 36:12Speaker 2: real Japan, and I've never been, if I went to
- 36:15Speaker 2: like sushi and a bobo tea place, I'd have to
- 36:18Speaker 2: look at someone to help me and be like, excuse me,
- 36:20Speaker 2: I'm a dumb American. Where's my California Role. I don't
- 36:27Speaker 2: only eat the California Roll, but it's very comforting for
- 36:30Speaker 2: me to have it, just because I order something I
- 36:33Speaker 2: don't like, like comforting. Where's my mocha Java lata bobo tea?
- 36:43Speaker 2: Do you have that one? You just have brown sugar? Okay?
- 36:47Speaker 2: And like I love ramen. I love ramen, but I'm
- 36:51Speaker 2: also and it's the same where like America is so
- 36:55Speaker 2: excited for Singo Demayo because it gives us a reason
- 36:58Speaker 2: to drink tequila and forget about anything we've ever done
- 37:01Speaker 2: to another culture or country. And it's like, I know,
- 37:07Speaker 2: I as an adult, you start to realize, like what's
- 37:10Speaker 2: the difference between Americanized Mexican food and then authentic Mexican food.
- 37:16Speaker 2: And I love a Mexican restaurant that will sit, that
- 37:20Speaker 2: will put it right on the menu, like this is
- 37:22Speaker 2: your traditional street taco.
- 37:25Speaker 3: We will make it the white people way, Like, thank you,
- 37:30Speaker 3: thank you for accommodating me. I appreciate it.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Yeah, And I'm like, thank you so much, because I
- 37:34Speaker 2: do actually only eat food if there's cheese on it.
- 37:43Speaker 3: I do. I do have the palette of a five
- 37:46Speaker 3: year old.
- 37:46Speaker 2: I do. And I wrote that joke into my sacom.
- 37:49Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, I know that you have the
- 37:51Speaker 2: palette of your average third grader, and I think that
- 37:56Speaker 2: like anime. I think. Okay, So I just watched Girls
- 38:00Speaker 2: the first time because if you're going to be a
- 38:02Speaker 2: woman who's also writing television, people bring up Girls to
- 38:06Speaker 2: you a lot.
- 38:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and if you haven't watched it, because I only
- 38:11Speaker 2: watched the first season on DVD and then never picked
- 38:14Speaker 2: it up again HBO subscription for years. Never went back
- 38:19Speaker 2: to Girls for like literally no reason. And I watched
- 38:22Speaker 2: it start to finish and I was like, actually, this
- 38:23Speaker 2: show is pretty strong. From the moment it starts to
- 38:26Speaker 2: the moment it ends, it stays pretty true to itself.
- 38:29Speaker 2: All of these characters acted in ways that I expected
- 38:33Speaker 2: them to act for all six seasons. Yeah, but Shoshana
- 38:37Speaker 2: gets to go to Japan. Yeah, which meant that Amily
- 38:42Speaker 2: actually got to see Japan or HBO's version of it.
- 38:48Speaker 2: And it made me think of Phu Shane and Kawhi
- 38:52Speaker 2: stuff and all of that stuff that's starting to like,
- 38:55Speaker 2: you know, integrate into our players or whatever. We have
- 38:59Speaker 2: now limited to Charmine, Charlie's whatever it would be. And
- 39:03Speaker 2: I was like, oh my gosh, what, Like I guess
- 39:07Speaker 2: Lisa Frank was our touch point on like how do
- 39:10Speaker 2: I express myself and be the girliest, most obnoxious feminine
- 39:16Speaker 2: goddess I could ever be? Because that's what I think
- 39:18Speaker 2: of when I think of things like Sailor Moon and
- 39:21Speaker 2: Josie and the Pussycats and Gem They were women and
- 39:24Speaker 2: they were just unapologetically expressive in their womanhood.
- 39:29Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't know. I think it's it's interesting because
- 39:33Speaker 3: you did have like a I don't know, you had
- 39:36Speaker 3: male energy though as well, because we had the what
- 39:42Speaker 3: was it, not Sailor Neptune, but Saylor Uranus. She was
- 39:48Speaker 3: her partner, her cousin. If you watch the early early
- 39:57Speaker 3: Knots version edited, uh, you know she was the of
- 40:04Speaker 3: the more butch partner in that in that relationship. But yeah,
- 40:10Speaker 3: I don't know it was I just felt like it
- 40:12Speaker 3: was her girls. It was definitely a show for girls,
- 40:15Speaker 3: I think, absolutely yeah, But it wasn't like, I don't know,
- 40:20Speaker 3: it's hot girls to be strong though. It wasn't like
- 40:23Speaker 3: you could be really girly, but you were. You were
- 40:26Speaker 3: there to fight evil, you had to save the world.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Like you weren't trying to go to college, you weren't
- 40:34Speaker 3: trying to create dinner. I don't think she ever does
- 40:37Speaker 3: any chores or like she doesn't basically or point yeah,
- 40:43Speaker 3: I don't think she does anything except basically fight evil,
- 40:48Speaker 3: hang out with her friends and eat and eat and
- 40:52Speaker 3: failed tests some field tests.
- 40:54Speaker 2: She's my icon.
- 40:56Speaker 3: I know what a hero like, and like I hang
- 40:59Speaker 3: out with her friend who maybe was a little too off.
- 41:05Speaker 2: And I think my biggest chip on the shoulders is
- 41:08Speaker 2: like if you're if you grew up as a millennial
- 41:12Speaker 2: and you remembered what it was like to be like
- 41:14Speaker 2: a female athlete or a female comedian or anything like
- 41:19Speaker 2: in a male centered role. The first point of advice
- 41:23Speaker 2: you'd ever heard was, now, don't be too much of
- 41:25Speaker 2: a girl about it, Like, yeah, you can't do a
- 41:30Speaker 2: stand up in a dress. I like, you can't. They'll
- 41:35Speaker 2: have you, they will respect you. And I think it
- 41:40Speaker 2: is so important for us to have like because I
- 41:45Speaker 2: also think of like Marvel superheroes because like it was
- 41:48Speaker 2: the Marvel movies and then we get one every day,
- 41:51Speaker 2: and even except for maybe X Men, because x Men
- 41:56Speaker 2: has such a large cast of people. When I think
- 41:59Speaker 2: of like Black Widow and Wanda Maximo and like, you know,
- 42:04Speaker 2: the only time I really saw them do anything truly
- 42:08Speaker 2: like real feminine and weird with Wonder Woman over at
- 42:11Speaker 2: DC is when we went to nineteen eighty four and
- 42:14Speaker 2: everyone hated that movie but me, she gets to wear hairspray.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Yeah, everyone hated that movie.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Everyone hated that movie. Everyone told me I was big wrong.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Everyone loves to tell me that I'm big ron about
- 42:31Speaker 2: thora Radnarak and Love and Thunder, And I was like,
- 42:35Speaker 2: these are the best of Marvel movies. Because I don't
- 42:41Speaker 2: know if people understand this, but like comics are silly, yeah,
- 42:46Speaker 2: manga a lot of them are kind of silly, like
- 42:48Speaker 2: it was supposed to be silly and fun.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the thing, is like the over the top
- 42:55Speaker 3: miss is the point, Like I love that about manga
- 42:58Speaker 3: and anime. Is like, you don't missed the point because
- 43:01Speaker 3: they're so over the top. You the expressions are, you know,
- 43:06Speaker 3: they're very clear. You're not wondering if this person is
- 43:09Speaker 3: mad or sad or happy. It's very obvious.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Yes, literal, like rainfall comes out of their eyes when
- 43:18Speaker 2: they're sad. That's my favorite part. But the facial expressions
- 43:20Speaker 2: are my favorite parts. And I feel like and this
- 43:23Speaker 2: could be because of my mom. My mom hates Camp.
- 43:27Speaker 2: She cannot watch the American version of The Traders because
- 43:32Speaker 2: Alan Coming's outfits just too much for her. She's like,
- 43:36Speaker 2: why does what what a incorrect? I told her she's
- 43:41Speaker 2: big ron. I was like, stop talking about my king
- 43:43Speaker 2: like that. She's like one time I was watching and
- 43:46Speaker 2: he wore moss and I was like, that was my
- 43:48Speaker 2: favorite outfit.
- 43:49Speaker 3: Did she see the matching dog outfits?
- 43:52Speaker 2: Yeah? I know, And she's like, why does he act
- 43:54Speaker 2: that way the entire time? And I was like, Camp.
- 43:58Speaker 3: Guys is having fun.
- 44:01Speaker 2: And like I have all of these memories of loving
- 44:04Speaker 2: Broadway and musicals and stuff. And then I realized my
- 44:06Speaker 2: mom only ever took me to Mama Mia and then
- 44:09Speaker 2: immediately stopped and I went and saw Wicked and everything
- 44:12Speaker 2: else with other people.
- 44:15Speaker 3: I was like, Mama Mia, this is not theater.
- 44:19Speaker 2: He loves Mama Mia. But Mama Mayda doesn't really have
- 44:21Speaker 2: that much camp. It's just a lady who who has
- 44:24Speaker 2: a couple of suspects on who could be her baby daddy?
- 44:27Speaker 2: Tell sorry, yeah, just tell with the music of Abba
- 44:33Speaker 2: and But so, I don't know if when I was
- 44:37Speaker 2: a kid, every time I saw something that was like
- 44:39Speaker 2: very dramatic and over the top and campy, there was
- 44:42Speaker 2: a part of me that went, eh, like I'm too
- 44:44Speaker 2: serious in a cap record for this, I'm too smart
- 44:47Speaker 2: because like again, my sister and I have only just
- 44:51Speaker 2: clopped in because I was like Emily, mom hates allan
- 44:56Speaker 2: coming and I don't know how to handle it. And
- 44:58Speaker 2: she's like, well she hates yeah, like she she wouldn't
- 45:02Speaker 2: like anything that we do.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Now, that's so interesting. Yeah, I always wonder if people
- 45:09Speaker 3: like that they just don't get it, you know, they
- 45:11Speaker 3: just it's just not which is fine, you know, everything's
- 45:14Speaker 3: not for everybody, but yeah, I was. I think it's
- 45:18Speaker 3: interesting because like I think, I think manga and like anime,
- 45:23Speaker 3: they're just I mean they're not off on some of
- 45:26Speaker 3: some of it's very serious, but like it's it's so entertaining,
- 45:31Speaker 3: you know, and I think it can be really interesting
- 45:34Speaker 3: and I don't know, it's just different. It just hits
- 45:37Speaker 3: different than American cartoons.
- 45:40Speaker 2: And there is in Sailor Moon especially, there is such
- 45:44Speaker 2: a through line of like friendship. Like at the end
- 45:48Speaker 2: of the day, maybe Sailor Mars has a month where
- 45:54Speaker 2: she's having a little bit of a pmd D spell.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Maybe I'm projecting, and she tries to be Sailor Moon.
- 46:01Speaker 3: Well, she like tries to get like the others to
- 46:05Speaker 3: like agree with her that like maybe I should be
- 46:07Speaker 3: a leader, not sailor mute, and obviously I'm better and
- 46:10Speaker 3: like everything in her, don't you guys agree? And but
- 46:15Speaker 3: eventually like there's you know, of course, like a big
- 46:18Speaker 3: bad comes around and they have a battle and she's like,
- 46:21Speaker 3: you know what, she is the chosen one, I guess.
- 46:25Speaker 2: You know, and we always wrong. Yeah, I know.
- 46:29Speaker 3: It's interesting because like there's this like there's this element
- 46:32Speaker 3: of like, essentially Sailor Moone is the chosen one, So
- 46:37Speaker 3: there's like there's that aspect to it. It's not necessarily
- 46:41Speaker 3: anything she does, it's just who she is and you
- 46:45Speaker 3: can't escape that.
- 46:46Speaker 2: Just like Buffy Summers. We did not ask to be
- 46:49Speaker 2: the chosen one. Yeah, when when women are like too
- 46:54Speaker 2: like uh, they feel like they can't talk to me
- 46:58Speaker 2: about anything. But because my only hot take is like,
- 47:01Speaker 2: well that's because of patriarchy, I'm like, I didn't ask
- 47:04Speaker 2: for this role. This role found me. I asked, I
- 47:09Speaker 2: just see it, that's all, And she asked me the
- 47:13Speaker 2: chosen one. She was surprised when that cat came up to.
- 47:16Speaker 3: Her and literally started talking.
- 47:18Speaker 2: I just started talking, Sabrina spell spelling, Sabrina spell. Then
- 47:24Speaker 2: Sabrina Spelban woke up one day, was sixteen years old,
- 47:28Speaker 2: and they were like, you're a witch.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Which I honestly dream about my dream.
- 47:33Speaker 2: I kept waiting, and it turn out I am the witch.
- 47:37Speaker 2: It just doesn't look like it looked on Team Witch
- 47:40Speaker 2: like I don't. I can't make anyone wrap and I
- 47:42Speaker 2: find that very infuriating.
- 47:44Speaker 3: And if I ever find a cat with the little
- 47:47Speaker 3: cresset man on its forehead. You'll never see me again.
- 47:50Speaker 3: I'll tell you that right now. And can we just
- 47:53Speaker 3: talk about how like this transformation seems like they're nail
- 47:58Speaker 3: polished and then all of a sudd and you're just
- 48:00Speaker 3: like you're in this new outfit and it's so cute
- 48:04Speaker 3: and like you got a tiara slash headband like little
- 48:08Speaker 3: hair clips. I mean, come on, come on.
- 48:11Speaker 2: I just revisited one of our Taylor Swift themed episodes
- 48:15Speaker 2: about the Tortured Poet's Department, and it was about the
- 48:18Speaker 2: song Peter and I was talking about how like Wendy
- 48:22Speaker 2: wasn't having a great time in never Land and she
- 48:25Speaker 2: didn't really ask to be swept away to never never Land.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Peter Pant just kind of made that choice for everybody.
- 48:30Speaker 2: And then he was like, raise all of my kids,
- 48:33Speaker 2: all of these random kids I've collected and also didn't
- 48:36Speaker 2: ask if they wanted to come to my island. They're lost. Yeah. Yeah,
- 48:42Speaker 2: And I had kind of been like and it was
- 48:44Speaker 2: like yeah, because like that's the thing, Like there is
- 48:47Speaker 2: like a lot of pain and nuance to girlhood and
- 48:50Speaker 2: a lot of things happened to us. So when we
- 48:52Speaker 2: have these like pockets of like parttoon Glittery Joy when
- 48:56Speaker 2: you're like they even made sure to include her nail, Paul.
- 49:01Speaker 2: That's all I want, I know.
- 49:04Speaker 3: And it's like they all have like I loved that.
- 49:07Speaker 3: I mean, I keep referencing back to those Spice girls.
- 49:10Speaker 3: I think that's cosaps what I identified them with, because
- 49:12Speaker 3: they all had like they all had their own roles.
- 49:15Speaker 3: Like again, like Saylor Mercury was a smart one and
- 49:19Speaker 3: she played chess. Got a whole episode around how she
- 49:22Speaker 3: was so good at chess, and she was, but she
- 49:25Speaker 3: also was like her element was like water and say
- 49:30Speaker 3: their mars her element was fire. Like it's just you know,
- 49:35Speaker 3: like they really had a whole lore behind all of them,
- 49:38Speaker 3: I which, you know, I love that, you know, they
- 49:40Speaker 3: got like a backstory.
- 49:41Speaker 2: And I think everyone should explore their girlhood lore because
- 49:47Speaker 2: I do think that we are set up as women
- 49:49Speaker 2: to experience friendship in some sort of like hierarchy like
- 49:54Speaker 2: that where it's like one of you is the chosen one.
- 49:56Speaker 2: I still remember her name, who mine was? Yeahn't me? Yeah,
- 50:01Speaker 2: my best friend and I still talk about our chosen
- 50:03Speaker 2: one and how we love to reconnect with her. Oh
- 50:07Speaker 2: we're like, where's our chosen one, and then you have
- 50:09Speaker 2: like the smart one, and that's usually where I fit in.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Sometimes I'm the funny one, but usually my best friend
- 50:16Speaker 2: would take, oh, we're about equally as smart and funny,
- 50:20Speaker 2: so we would just flip flop between the two of those.
- 50:22Speaker 2: You know, you have your weird one. She's like a
- 50:26Speaker 2: poet and she wears black all the time. And were
- 50:29Speaker 2: you the weird one? I just said that, which which,
- 50:33Speaker 2: uh where did you fall in the hierarchy?
- 50:38Speaker 3: I fell into the smart one. I didn't. I didn't
- 50:40Speaker 3: get into poetry, so college.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Sad like, well, I didn't get into witchcraft until I
- 50:47Speaker 2: was an adult, and I was like, this is hard
- 50:50Speaker 2: and I have to start meditating. It's never too late,
- 50:54Speaker 2: as they say, But like I do think that, like
- 50:56Speaker 2: every friend group has like a Stevie Nicks, a Barbie
- 50:59Speaker 2: Doll and right, yeah, like from the Black Lagoon.
- 51:04Speaker 1: I know.
- 51:05Speaker 3: It's like you fight against like that. It's like we're
- 51:07Speaker 3: not a stereotype. And then like you're like.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Maybe we are stereotized, but what if we like literally
- 51:13Speaker 2: celebrated it, Because what if that's what community is supposed
- 51:17Speaker 2: to be, that we're all just filling in the niches
- 51:20Speaker 2: and pockets that our chosen one can't, and our chosen
- 51:24Speaker 2: one is also filling in pockets and needs for us.
- 51:28Speaker 2: I'm like, what if we just made cool women are
- 51:31Speaker 2: higher power? Again, Like we're eleven year old.
- 51:34Speaker 3: But let me ask you this, how would you react
- 51:38Speaker 3: if your daughter from the future, who is annoying as hell,
- 51:43Speaker 3: owed up when you were like sixteen ish. Yeah, and
- 51:49Speaker 3: constantly fought you for attention of your current boyfriend who
- 51:55Speaker 3: is her future father.
- 51:57Speaker 2: No, that's gross. Someone has to explain that.
- 51:59Speaker 3: Webs the weirdest life.
- 52:01Speaker 2: But also is it. I've never seen the Back to
- 52:03Speaker 2: the Future movies because I famously refuse to see any
- 52:09Speaker 2: quote unquote dad movie. So if a father has told
- 52:11Speaker 2: me that he likes it, and it could be anyone's father,
- 52:15Speaker 2: I'm like you and I'll never watch it. I just
- 52:18Speaker 2: watched Jos for the first time two weeks ago.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Josh is like a great movie that I know.
- 52:24Speaker 2: And I'm like, here, I am thinking it's just a
- 52:26Speaker 2: dead movie. No, it's a great and it's a great
- 52:29Speaker 2: me and it makes so many points about capitalists.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Yep, yep.
- 52:35Speaker 2: So I see you, Spielberg, I see you knowing things.
- 52:41Speaker 2: But yeah, I was like a dad movie. No, isn't
- 52:43Speaker 2: that the plot of Back to the Future. Doesn't he
- 52:45Speaker 2: go back in time and bang his mom? I think
- 52:49Speaker 2: they kiss? D kiss?
- 52:51Speaker 3: I think they kiss. Yeah, sorry if I got that
- 52:53Speaker 3: wrong listeners, But I'm sure I haven't watched it in
- 52:57Speaker 3: a very long time, but I do think they kiss.
- 53:00Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure the Simpsons made me believe that he
- 53:02Speaker 2: went back in time and became his own father, and
- 53:05Speaker 2: like what does that mean?
- 53:07Speaker 3: I just remember like as a kid when I watched it,
- 53:10Speaker 3: I was like I didn't think about it, and that
- 53:13Speaker 3: was an adult I think. I'm like, man, I want
- 53:17Speaker 3: to write a TV show that is that bonkers, that
- 53:20Speaker 3: has that and get away with it because I just
- 53:22Speaker 3: love that. That is just so stupid and so funny
- 53:26Speaker 3: on so many different levels. And like she had I
- 53:30Speaker 3: do remember, like because she like her daughter comes from
- 53:33Speaker 3: the thirtieth century, which is like what is the timeline here?
- 53:38Speaker 3: Guys the.
- 53:46Speaker 2: What?
- 53:48Speaker 3: And like it's so it's just bonkers, and like it's
- 53:53Speaker 3: like you figure out she's she's her daughter, but she
- 53:58Speaker 3: obviously has a crush on her father, which you're like, Okay,
- 54:02Speaker 3: there's a collegy going on there, but Also, you.
- 54:06Speaker 2: Know who else has a storyline like this is my
- 54:10Speaker 2: niche interest Charmed, Like the boys come back as adults
- 54:15Speaker 2: and they're like, you have to defeat the evil or
- 54:17Speaker 2: else we're bad people in the future.
- 54:20Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. I loved Charmed.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Everyone wanted to be Terminator. I would be so annoyed
- 54:27Speaker 2: if my daughter showed up and I'm sixteen years old.
- 54:31Speaker 2: I haven't even really slept with her dad yet. I
- 54:34Speaker 2: don't you haven't really slept with their dad. There's no
- 54:37Speaker 2: MTV's team Mom. I'm not getting like a reality TV
- 54:40Speaker 2: deal out of this, and you just continuously bother me.
- 54:44Speaker 2: And I'm like, I didn't know that I wanted kids,
- 54:46Speaker 2: but I guess that changed. Yeah. I am very into
- 54:53Speaker 2: time travel. I love when we play with timelines and
- 54:57Speaker 2: all of that. But then I do think that's the
- 54:59Speaker 2: reaper passions of like you bothering your family members. That's annoying.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Well, and like there's no it never gets a dressed
- 55:09Speaker 3: like because I guess it doesn't matter, but like, you know,
- 55:11Speaker 3: what's the number one rule is like you can't mess
- 55:14Speaker 3: with things.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Right, right the butterfly effect.
- 55:17Speaker 3: Or yeah right, And it's like I go straight to
- 55:22Speaker 3: my mom and dad.
- 55:24Speaker 2: I think the millennials are way sold on the Butterfly
- 55:26Speaker 2: effect because of that stupid movie with Ashton picture like
- 55:28Speaker 2: we loved it too much or something I.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Did like that movie.
- 55:32Speaker 2: I will be fair, but we're like Final Destination and
- 55:36Speaker 2: the Butterfly effect shaped us in innumerable ways.
- 55:42Speaker 3: Truly. I know now we all think we're like scientists.
- 55:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I love fake movie science science playing. Maybe I
- 55:49Speaker 2: should write a sci fi because people keep trying to
- 55:51Speaker 2: tell me that the Meg movies are the are bad movies,
- 55:54Speaker 2: and I'm like, that's my favorite franchise. You're shitting on,
- 55:57Speaker 2: leave it alone. I think I'm gonna get keep watching
- 56:01Speaker 2: My Sailor Moon. I think I am now open to
- 56:05Speaker 2: other anime recommendations, maybe because there's true like Gray's and
- 56:09Speaker 2: had Me is coming back next week, but that or
- 56:12Speaker 2: in like two weeks. That literally just means that Shanda
- 56:15Speaker 2: will give me four episodes and then be like it's Christmas,
- 56:17Speaker 2: I gotta go. It'll be like Christmas.
- 56:21Speaker 3: Often she's got checks to cash, She's given enough.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Okay, Shana is somehow on a worse schedule than weekly
- 56:31Speaker 2: cable and streaming combined, where she's just like here are
- 56:34Speaker 2: your three episodes and I'll see you in three months.
- 56:39Speaker 3: So she's got Bridgerton seasons to write. Okay, she's busy,
- 56:44Speaker 3: and I'm like, someone put my only comfort.
- 56:47Speaker 2: Showback on the fucking TV. So I know what other
- 56:51Speaker 2: anime I'm gonna watch. It's gonna be the Arcane series
- 56:54Speaker 2: because so many women have come to me be like
- 56:57Speaker 2: you have to watch Arcane on Netflix, and I was like,
- 56:59Speaker 2: it's a dad.
- 57:00Speaker 3: I feel like just because a man tells you to
- 57:03Speaker 3: watch something doesn't mean that because I will, I will second.
- 57:09Speaker 2: That it is good.
- 57:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's based on video games, which I'm not
- 57:13Speaker 3: a gamer, so don't know how it stacks up. But
- 57:16Speaker 3: I like the anime.
- 57:18Speaker 2: It does only take one woman for me to be like.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, no, it's really good. I really enjoyed it.
- 57:24Speaker 5: I actually wish there's only two seasons. I wish there
- 57:27Speaker 5: was more. But honestly telling me that just because a
- 57:30Speaker 5: man said it was good means that it's bad is
- 57:32Speaker 5: actually what this podcast goes against. Everything like that, everything
- 57:35Speaker 5: that this podcast it's against, I know.
- 57:38Speaker 3: I said, like I was saying it and I was like, well,
- 57:40Speaker 3: it's going to make her math.
- 57:42Speaker 2: You're like that's our brand for her. That is not
- 57:44Speaker 2: her Instagram bio. That's not her log line.
- 57:47Speaker 3: That's like, I'm just canceling myself.
- 57:51Speaker 2: She's going to cut that in a weird way. Is
- 57:54Speaker 2: there any other We talked about female friendship and the
- 57:57Speaker 2: importance of making sure that we to feel feminine, and
- 58:02Speaker 2: I just don't feel like we celebrate femininity as much
- 58:05Speaker 2: as we could be.
- 58:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:06Speaker 3: I mean, I think that I liked the show so
- 58:09Speaker 3: much because the focus was I mean, it was just
- 58:12Speaker 3: cute and fun and the style of it was great,
- 58:16Speaker 3: but and it was really about her and her friends
- 58:20Speaker 3: and okay, but in the moon, but I also just
- 58:27Speaker 3: I don't know, and even the again, like even the
- 58:29Speaker 3: villains were women. It was just like, this is about
- 58:32Speaker 3: ladies to the front. You know. I do want to
- 58:35Speaker 3: send you this. These are called the Sailor Starlights, and
- 58:39Speaker 3: I just want you to look at them and tell
- 58:42Speaker 3: me what you think about the male representation that you're seeing,
- 58:45Speaker 3: because these are dudes everyone.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Because this is an audio medium, I will be look,
- 58:51Speaker 2: they're gorgeous. See. So I don't know if through behind
- 58:57Speaker 2: the banes you have gotten a chance to get to
- 59:00Speaker 2: know literally Lindsey She has also come back come onto
- 59:04Speaker 2: the show to talk about female friendships and misogyny uh
- 59:10Speaker 2: effect on female friendships. And she did ask me. She
- 59:13Speaker 2: was like, if you had to, what type of boyfriend
- 59:19Speaker 2: are you okay with hanging out with as a taggle
- 59:22Speaker 2: on to your friend. And my go to answer is
- 59:25Speaker 2: always a silent one. But these boys they do that.
- 59:32Speaker 2: You see him pronounce. You said that they were men.
- 59:34Speaker 3: Yeah, they're men. They are, yeah everyone.
- 59:38Speaker 2: They're wearing like leather bikinis. Yeah, they like thigh high boots,
- 59:44Speaker 2: thy high boots with heels. They are a rue Paul's
- 59:48Speaker 2: drag race dream.
- 59:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:51Speaker 2: And that's their I mean, that's their transformation outfits. And
- 59:53Speaker 2: that's their transformation outfits. They have long, luscious, flowing hair,
- 59:58Speaker 2: just like Robbie with the good hair diamond. And that
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: is my requisite, Like, should a man come upon me,
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: he has to have good hair so I can call
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: him whatever. Like in the Strangers Thing show, I was
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: okay with Billy because he had good hair, so I'd
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: call him Billy with good hair. My sister would be like,
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: he's a bad man. I'm like, bad, He's got great hair,
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: but yeah, I see, And so this is what I
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: told Lindsay that if if I must be in the
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: company of men, I have to be in the company
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: of men who play outside of the confines of gender.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: So like, they're okay about talking about my Lisa Frank
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: of your They they own their own set of glitter pens, guyliner.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: I'm really into Thank you so much, David Bowie and
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: Tim Curry. You know, I grew up on Legend and Labyrim,
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: so I love guyeliner, nail polish. You know they love Charmed.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: I'm like, yes, okay, yeah, because I was in like
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: an and I won't go into it because I went
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: into it in the Lindsay episode. But I was in
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: an improv class where like, there were a couple of
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: men who could who simply could not play and be
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: in a scene with me because I would focus on
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: the feminine and it won't even be on purpose to
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: make a point. It's literally the only thing that I
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: know how to do. And improv you have to think
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: of everything on the fly. So I'm gonna talk about
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: my cat, and I'm going to talk about the dangers
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: of online dating. I don't know, and they and they
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: would literally just change the topic and that's the number
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: one rule of improv. If I say something, you have
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: to yess and me, you don't get to change the
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: topic on me, right, I would get stubborn and a
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: cert my femininity and the like, and then it would
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: just fall apart from there. And then there was a
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: gentleman who would just start a scene and kind of
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: took a good gander of where we were all at
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: as performers, and then pulay on our level. And he'd
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: be like, mamly only like speaking to women, gays, they's girls,
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: gays and things only, and I will give her that opportunity.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: And I loved him. I loved playing with him because
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: you never I don't like to feel like I have
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: to beg you to find common interest in my thing,
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: just because my thing is the powder Puff Girls.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Shout out to the powder.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Puff Girls and like you're like, you know, the power
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Buff Girls. I love football. I don't like anything about
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: football ever, but I will at least nod alone while
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: about it. And I will make fun of the bears.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: That's the one thing I know how to do. I
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: be like hon them bears. Don't even tell me. I
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: already know they're doing bad. But like, it's that for me,
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: It said, there's something and I see women do it too,
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: especially as like trad wifery and Pickneys are coming back
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: straw where it's like our natural inclination is to shy
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: away from anything that girls like. Like we were taught
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: to that pink stout a cool color and that boys
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: can't like paint. And you know, a lot of Pickney
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: tradwives threw a fit when Target stopped color coding the
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: aisles for toys, and they were like, how well, I said,
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: my husband to buy Christmas presents for the children. If
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: he doesn't have blue for boys and pink for girls,
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: that's the only thing he knows about them.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: I just the way we expect nothing from daughters. I mean,
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: I just cannot.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: I can't. I can't, I just can't. So we had
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: to have a fit about blue and paint in the
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: way that like even sometimes like and I know I
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: did it as a kid because when I was a kid,
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: all I wanted to do was to not be, you know,
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: the chosen one. Now, I'd love to be the chosen one,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: but not all I wanted to be was the chosen one?
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? I wanted the best hair. She
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: had the best hair. She has the best hair, you know,
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: and I don't have good hair, Like I have some
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: massage it every day to try and like.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: Her hair with the like which that style is now
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: back with the little you know, the spaceball bones and
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: like like how long it was like looking I'm like,
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: good God, can you imagine the upkeep?
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: But like I do think like I do remember that
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: there was such a like there's this performance part to
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: girlhood mmm, where you have to love all of the
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: things that you love, will also be ready to make
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: fun of them in a moment's notice, because you also
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: need to fit in with the group within whatever your
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: role is for the hierarchy.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, it's like it's kind of like you have
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: to like die to yourself a little bit on the inside,
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: and it's it's like the way to get free of
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: that is really hard, and sometimes you can't until you're
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: until girlhood's long, long over, and it's kind of hard
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: because like I look back now, like, uh, I feel
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: like that's part of why, like as adults we buy
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: toys like our our childhood toys again, like I collect
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: the land before time. Oh yeah, I mean don Blue
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: shout out to shout out to Don Blue. I kind
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: of love the man. Well, I mean he's problematic. Nobody
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: tell me, because I really love a lot of his films.
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: I don't know if he was a bad guy and relie.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: Like you always rub them at risk on the internet,
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: Like I know, like.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: I don't know if he was a bad guy in
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: real life. I haven't done the research, don't. I really
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: don't want to know because I love so many of
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: his films.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Not ten minutes ago, I was like, I'm in love
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: with Jason Stadium, and I know it's like how he actually.
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: It's like you never know. No one is saying you
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: just don't know, but like I collect the like old
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: toys and stuff like that from them to see like
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: on emay and stuff allo for them, and it's like,
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: you know, just serve no purpose, but's just making me
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: happy when I see them. And it's just funny because
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: it's like as a kid, I love those films so
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: much and it's just some way to like connect back
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: with like your childhood and I still watch them sometimes now,
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: but like it's it's it's weird because like if you
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: had asked me as a kid, if I liked them.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: There was definitely a time frame after a certain age
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: where I would definitely except like, oh not anymore. No,
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: I don't, I don't like them anymore. There was never
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: a point in my life where I didn't love the
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: ram before time. There's never in my life where I
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: wouldn't have died for little Foot.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: Oh yeah, my. And maybe that's why we don't have
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: a clear cut on like when Girlhood left us, because
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: it's always depth to buy a thousand cuts. It's all
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: ye small betrayals that you make to yourself and Lisa
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Fray and land before timing, your Barbie dolls and all
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: of it. My big thing to collect now is stickers.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: I'm covered in stickers at all times because I junk
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: journal now. So now I'm like, oh, but I make
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: a thing.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: Oh I love that. I love stickers. I like the
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: Happy Planners and like their little sticker sets. I love
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: getting them on sale. I like Michael's or Apparents.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: And I always tell people that they'll know that I
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: the moment that it clicks in my head, that I
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: only quote unquote made it, and that I get to
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: just be like a rich, eccentric old lady, which is
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: my only dream, and it's because my house, you know
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: those Christmas villages like Grandma's put out for Christmas. Yes,
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: I want to do something similar, but with fairy garden stuff,
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: because fairy garden stuff is all just like tiny little
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: bathrooms and living rooms and cars and stuff, but for fairies,
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: and you're supposed to put them outside, but I'm never outside,
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: so I just want to. I just want little vignettes
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: fairies on all of my shelf and services. Mm hmm, yeah, yeah,
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: I love that. Yeah, and I if I see a unicorne,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: I buy an unicorn. I don't know, I know, it's.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: Like what age should you realize your money was yours
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: and you could use it to buy things you liked?
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: You know. I recently stopped hearing that my squash mellows
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: could be visible in my tech talks because I'm like, oh,
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: no one's making fun of her own women for having
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: squish milos. They can actually be in my tiktoks, that's okay,
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: along with my Ezama lotionit. I've also stopped iiding that
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: from my pants. Yeah, yeah, like sorry, I have ezema.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: I don't know, it's always in the shot because I
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: always already have it.
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm an adult. I don't tell you.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: I don't know next to mysh mellow, I know.
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: It's just funny because it's like why don't we like pretend?
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know, but like at some point
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: in my life, for probably I had fifteen is years,
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: like I definitely would have been like, yeah, I used
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: to like Sailor Mud or yeah, I used to like
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: Living before Time. But now I'm like, no, I probably
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: loved it. I always loved it. I wish I wish
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: I spent more time with it.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Honestly, Yeah, I want to Sailor Moon coloring book. Now,
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: give me some stickers my junk journal. Where is the
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: licensed merch where?
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: Oh, there's plenty of merch. Don't don't worry. There's u'sahana merch.
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: Like and that's another thing like I'm really thankful for,
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: like it's had a resurgence because like again back in
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: the day, like it was not there, like when I
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: was a kid, Like you could barely find anything.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that my little fairy garden vignettes on
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: all of my surfaces is very polypocket of me. I
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: just be grown up pollypockets.
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: I was gonna say like you could buy like old
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: vintage polypockets, but that actually would cost you a small fortune.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: Okay, we should do our closing ceremony or else I
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: will just continuously yell ip at you to be like,
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: did you play with my little pony? I think I
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: can get back into it. Do they still make my
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: little poundhouse or what a poundhouse? Puppies?
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: Pound puppies?
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't. I don't know. Are there my little
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: pet shop? Do we still got that? I could get
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: back into it. I have nephews now. I feel like
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: last year for Christmas, I wasn't gonna get my nephew
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: anything because kids get a lot for Christmas. And he
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: was not too yet, so I was like, he's never
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: gonna remember that. I am some. And then they came
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: out with the Britney Spears Fisher Price little people, and
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: I was like, well, he has to know who Britney is.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: And now I can teach with the costume figurines and
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: I when I presented it to him, I was like,
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: this is your Christmas present. He went and then he
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: like literally banged it on the table until I was like,
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: I can open it up. And then we watched all
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: the music videos because I was babysitting that day and
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: no one could tell me not to. I was like,
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: this is toxic, this is oops, I get it again,
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: Oh my babe. On our show, we have a tradition
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: where we ask our listeners to walk away with a
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: life lesson about the topic that we chose, and then
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: we manifest for a better future. What do you think
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: is the biggest lesson we can take away from sailor mood?
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: Stick with your friends and lean in to all the
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: things that you love. Don't worry about failing the test.
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: It'll be fine. You got bigger fish to fry, like
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: saving the world or the galaxy, whichever, whichever comes. First
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: time travel is not that big of a deal. Don't
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: worry about it.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: Don't worry about It's not going to.
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: Mess anything up. It's fine. Who cares, Yeah, it's fine,
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: don't even don't even think about it. But yeah, I
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: think the biggest thing is like, friendship is the biggest Yeah,
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: the show is like, stick with your friends and everything
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: will work out.
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: I need to know if female friendship is something that's
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: still happening in cartoons that are being marketed to kids now.
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: I also don't know how we market cartoons to kids
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: now because of streaming. My nephew loves dinosaurs and we
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: typed in dinosaurs on Netflix, and all of the Netflix
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: original cartoons with dinosaurs revolve around farting, and we're just
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: the weirdest animation I've ever seen. So I was like,
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: turn it off. I can't do it.
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't. That's a good question. I don't have
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: like young children in my life. I don't know.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: I don't know. What would you like to manifest and
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: hope for our general energy collective?
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: I would love to see more, not necessarily shows the
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: like Sailor Man, because I mean, they'll never be another
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: Sailor Man, right, am?
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: I right?
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: But I'd love to see more, you know, more female
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: driven shows. I loved it, I mean, the most creative
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: by a woman, most prime. But I'd love to see
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: more shows where the focus isn't on just then it's
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: okay to have it to be about women and their friendship.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: You don't have to have a man in the picture necessarily,
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: It's okay, but it's not the focus. I did like
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: that about the series, and I like that the villains
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: were often women because the villains, I mean, first of
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: all the villain's outfits always on point.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: I love hot villainous women.
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: The villains were so cool and often have like a
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: pretty good backstory for not always having a lot of time.
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: So great female villains and that show as well, and
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: I think we need more great female villains as well.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: We do. Yeah, I think like I just want a
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: second the you know, I really hope there is. I
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: always liking it too. There was never a movie like
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: Now and Then for the generations that followed me. And
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: I think that that's like a real big upset because
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: I see a lot of younger women and young kids
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: in general just not have interests. I'm like, hey, like
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: you got a boy band you love or anything? And
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: and no. And my sister teaches high school and she
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: often says she's like, I don't know, I don't think
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: they like anything. And I think that, like I and
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: I just feel like the things like in Sync versus Backstreet.
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: That was that was your life.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: That was your life.
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: It was a debate every day.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: Weren't you a Christina or Britney, which sadly don't don't
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: even be ridiculous, like which spice girl are you? I
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: feel like those were all are like equalizers. And it
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: was all that we brought to school every day. We
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: brought to school with every day lenny of girlhood items
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: we could check off to talk about with our girlfriends.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: And I desperately hope that at some point little girls
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: stop destroying sphor us because they've never been taught to
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: read a Dear America book or whatever, and they and
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: they start like making friendship bracelets again and tying stream
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: into Chevron's and deciding which K pop demon hunter they are,
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: and that there is like the upper middle school movies
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: like Now and Then, And I mean, I was told
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: that Mermaids is not a movie I should have watched
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: them middle school, but it is one that I did,
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: and I'm fine, Yeah, I think that I as well.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: It was not TV.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: That's not my fault, that's comin.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: And I think that is the fall of these younger
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: generations is these younger generations have never been left alone
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: on a Wednesday evening with just a remote and no
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: idea what's on the TV. I watched The Color Purple
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: when I was eight years old, sick from school, and
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: I was like, I love the color purple. Turned it
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: on and didn't turn away from it.
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: It's true. I know there's so much like unsupervised television
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: that we got as kids that you know, it changed us.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: It was so possess.
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: It gave us character, that's for sure, gave us have
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: to talk about, that's for sure. I mean I do
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: think about that, like I think of like Turner classic
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: movies like that channel, like I said, which again probably
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: shouldn't have been watching that at seven, but you know,
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: I mean it was on TV. What was I supposed
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: to do?
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: My grandma used to watch The Nanny and the Brady
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Bunch of me. I just really feel like they're like,
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: we did a disservice to these kids because they're not
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: watching Nick at Night.
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, nickod Night. Oh yeah, I know, and
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: like not understanding that. I didn't understand it night actually
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: wasn't for children, like those shows were not made for children.
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: But I was watched but it was on Nickelodeon at night,
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: so it's obviously for children. No, that's not.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: Actually, why was I watching Mad About You in real time?
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Like I who knows how old I was when Mad
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: About You was on cable?
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: Make it nic Jeff Persons.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: Sotoria, thank you so much for being here today and
