Transcript
- 0:05This is the body recomposition revolution.
- 0:08I am a former personal trainer and educator for over a decade
- 0:12who is obsessed with teaching women 35 plus how to finally
- 0:16drop fat and completely reshape their bodies through science
- 0:20backed nutrition and training protocols optimized to meet your
- 0:24body's changing hormones. Classes in session Welcome back
- 0:32ladies to the body Recomposition revolution.
- 0:35This is episode 3. Today we are addressing one of
- 0:40the most common misconceptions women and people in general have
- 0:45about lifting. Can you guess what it is?
- 0:49You guessed it, because I know you're thinking it.
- 0:51It is that lifting will make you big and bulbous and masculine or
- 0:57bulky or whatever. And I hear that the phrase if I
- 1:01had a nickel would really make me a rich woman if I had a
- 1:05nickel every time I heard somebody go on about not wanting
- 1:09to be bulky. So today we're going to debunk
- 1:10that. And if you have tuned in before,
- 1:13you know, I like to start my episodes with a learner
- 1:16objective. What are we covering today?
- 1:19What will you learn by the end of this episode?
- 1:23As I would say in my classroom listening years on, today's
- 1:26learning objective is by the end of this episode, you will be
- 1:32able to explain why lifting weights helps women 35 plus, but
- 1:37everybody burn fat, build muscle, visible muscle and
- 1:41boosts your metabolism. So again, by the end of this
- 1:44episode, you will be able to explain why lifting weights
- 1:48helps women burn fat, build muscle that you can see, and
- 1:51boost your metabolism. And at the end, I'm going to ask
- 1:54you this question. Why is strength training more
- 1:57effective than cardio alone for body recomposition after age 35?
- 2:03You're listening for why strength training is more
- 2:06effective than cardio for body recomp after 35.
- 2:09That means why it's more effective for dropping fat,
- 2:11gaining muscle. Let's start right off the bat by
- 2:15debunking the myth, the misconception, the all too
- 2:18common narrative that lifting heavy weights will make a woman
- 2:22bulky. If you are tuned in, I'm going
- 2:25to assume you're a woman, but if not, keep listening.
- 2:28This applies to everybody. I'm going to assume you are a
- 2:31woman. You are a woman that is looking
- 2:33to drop fat. You would love to have that
- 2:35lean, muscular physique. Some of you would love to have
- 2:38kind of a small dancer body, and then others would love to be on
- 2:42the other end of the spectrum and they love the bodybuilding
- 2:45physique. They love that quote, bulky
- 2:47look. And most of you fall somewhere
- 2:50in between. I am right in the middle.
- 2:52Sometimes I'm more towards the left and I like to be smaller
- 2:55and sometimes I'm more towards the right.
- 2:57And the great thing about that is it's all up to you.
- 3:00You can change your body composition, your aesthetic
- 3:05whenever the heck you want to. And what is awesome and what
- 3:08most people don't understand is that whether you want to be a
- 3:11tiny little muscular thing or on the other end of the spectrum, a
- 3:16a little bit bigger, a little bit more defined, rounded
- 3:18shoulders. If you're on the far right,
- 3:20either way, you are going to have to lift weights and drop
- 3:24fat to build your lean muscle and get that physique either
- 3:28way. And that right there is the cusp
- 3:31of it. That is what I hear from women
- 3:34over and over again. They are always saying the
- 3:35phrase, well, I just want to be small.
- 3:37I just, I just want to be tiny. Got it.
- 3:39Great. You still have to lift weights
- 3:41because what you're saying is you want less body fat and in
- 3:44order to drop your body fat and to keep it off, you have to have
- 3:48more lean muscle. You have to.
- 3:51There's no in between. Well, there actually is.
- 3:53It's called skinny fat. So if you are not lifting and
- 3:56you're starving yourself, you end up with that small but
- 3:59flabby, malnourished, unathletic.
- 4:02It's not a good look. That's not what we're shooting
- 4:05for on this podcast at all. That's what you end up with.
- 4:07And then newsflash, you can't maintain it.
- 4:09You end up gaining all that weight you ran off every day of
- 4:12the week plus more because you damaged your metabolism and the
- 4:16first thing to go was your lean muscle, which is what boosts
- 4:18your metabolism. Now I want to be very open and
- 4:21very clear that learning the difference between skinny fat
- 4:26and having a lean, strong physique was not just a switch
- 4:30that turned on for me one day. It really wasn't.
- 4:33It was a gradual realization that took me years to fully
- 4:38grasp. I have had so many points in my
- 4:41life where I have been continuously lifting, staying on
- 4:45point with my nutrition and getting enough protein.
- 4:48And then somewhere along the line I either had a kid or fell
- 4:52off the wagon nutritionally. And my instinct, my brain's
- 4:56natural response to how am I going to get this weight off is
- 5:01always. Always has been, always will be.
- 5:04It is always to eat way less than I need and start running.
- 5:09I became a certified personal trainer in college.
- 5:11I understand the science, but it is so innately ingrained into
- 5:16who I am as a woman and the messages that were sent to me as
- 5:19a child. The messages that are still
- 5:22peddled to young girls every single day.
- 5:25But it is getting better that you need to eat less, take up
- 5:28less space, do more, be tiny, do an hour of cardio every single
- 5:33day until you are a skinny fat size 0.
- 5:36So I'm sure while all of you have heard you need to lift to
- 5:40look the way you want to look, you probably are like me and
- 5:43every other woman who falls into that continuous cycle, the same
- 5:48cycle of falling off the invisible wagon that doesn't
- 5:52actually exist or, you know, just kind of falling out of your
- 5:55routine. You, you put on some weight,
- 5:57whatever. You fall into that cycle of
- 5:59crash dieting, picking up a rampant running habits, losing
- 6:05all that weight, but then gaining it back and reevaluating
- 6:09all your life choices, throwing yourself into endless research
- 6:11and how to get that look. But as I know, you know, just
- 6:16like I knew all those times I've done this cycle, I know you know
- 6:21all roads lead back to lifting weights and getting enough
- 6:25protein. I know it stinks, it feels off.
- 6:28It's but it's truth. It's science.
- 6:31If you have tuned into me before, you may have heard me
- 6:35talk about my exercise and nutritional training protocols
- 6:40for women and how I base my philosophy around Doctor Stacey
- 6:44Sims. She's an exercise physiologist,
- 6:46she specializes in Women's Health from 35 and beyond, and
- 6:51she bases all of her protocols off of research done on subjects
- 6:54who are actually women because, believe it or not, all the
- 6:58widely known published, distributed and implemented from
- 7:02very credible sources. A lot of that is done on men who
- 7:07are obese or men who are overweight because the
- 7:11scientists assumed that their body composition would respond
- 7:15to training the same way a woman's would.
- 7:17That is above the age of 35. False.
- 7:19What Doctor Stacey Sims has found, and many other people who
- 7:22are up to date with their research is that that women are
- 7:26not men. Women do not respond to exercise
- 7:30and nutrition the same way men do.
- 7:33And while we are closely aligned in our bodies responses
- 7:37throughout our entire lives, once you hit 35 and beyond, it's
- 7:42not the same. It's not the same and you need
- 7:45to train and eat a little differently.
- 7:47Not super differently. But those tiny tweaks, the tiny
- 7:51tweaks that I implemented into my own training and nutritional
- 7:54protocols made all the difference.
- 7:57And now here I am, I'm 37. I am the leanest I've ever been.
- 8:00I am the strongest I've ever been.
- 8:02I am also the smallest in terms of pants and dress sizes than
- 8:06I've ever been, that I've ever been.
- 8:08And that's because I finally started following the science
- 8:12instead of what I thought would work.
- 8:16I hired a professional, I did my own research, and then I started
- 8:20this company to help women just like you do the same thing.
- 8:25And I want to drop a little factoid on you, one that stands
- 8:27out in my mind. I always think about it.
- 8:29It's from Doctor Stacey Sims, and she stated that we lose .1%
- 8:33of our entire body's lean muscle mass every single year after age
- 8:3835. That is when you start
- 8:41experiencing muscle loss and a metabolic decline.
- 8:45OK, 35 years old is when your body will naturally shed a
- 8:49little bit of muscle every year and your metabolism will in turn
- 8:52go down. So no, it's not in your head.
- 8:54You are getting bigger and you are getting, I don't know what
- 8:58other word to use then a little bit flabbier I guess, because
- 9:02that's what I was experiencing. I was losing muscle.
- 9:05I mean, I I wasn't losing it so much because I was lifting
- 9:08weights, but I definitely wasn't putting it on to the same degree
- 9:10I was previously before I got into my mid 30s as doctor.
- 9:15Stacey Sims, the boss, says women need strength for life.
- 9:20We need it to support our hormonal changes and we need it
- 9:23for our overall health. It is imperative to have muscle
- 9:27to strength train. Now, I love all of my clients,
- 9:32all for different reasons, but I do see commonalities.
- 9:35I see commonalities in their mindsets about lifting weights
- 9:40and the comfort level of lifting weights in a gym versus at home.
- 9:45And I think it is interesting. I found this research paper kind
- 9:49of talking about the history of women and weightlifting, and it
- 9:54talks about the evolution of women's resistance training all
- 9:58the way. It dates back all the way to the
- 10:011900s. No, I don't want to nerd out on
- 10:04you. I'll try to keep this brief, but
- 10:06I just thought it was so cool to see.
- 10:09Where does this mindset come from?
- 10:11Why are we so afraid of looking bulky, and why are we so afraid
- 10:17of lifting weights? Why do we feel all these
- 10:19feelings? Well, because of societal norms
- 10:22that have honestly been imposed on us since the 1900s.
- 10:26Very briefly here. 1900s women were limited to light exercise
- 10:30because of the societal norms. During the 1950s and 60s we made
- 10:35slight progress with aerobics and calisthetics.
- 10:39Strength training pretty much remained a man thing.
- 10:43Then the 1970s and 80s came rolling around and the fitness
- 10:47boom started. Aerobics icons like Jane Fonda,
- 10:51all those people. But strength training at this
- 10:54point, it's still seen as a male pursuit.
- 10:58It is on the sidelines to women. And now we're in the 80s,
- 11:01nineteen 80s here. Shape magazine came out and I'm
- 11:06dating myself. But Shape magazine was right up
- 11:10there next to Oxygen magazine with my idol Jamie Eason.
- 11:14Shape magazine started encouraging women to embrace
- 11:16that strong toned physique. This is right when society
- 11:20started being OK with women having kind of a muscular bod, a
- 11:25muscular look. Now we're in 1990s to 2000s.
- 11:28This is when all the inclusive gyms started, the mainstream
- 11:32gyms, They had environments where women could comfortably
- 11:35engage in resistance training right alongside men.
- 11:38Woo. And now here we are in the 21st
- 11:41century and we are all about strong is beautiful.
- 11:47This movement is huge. You can feel it.
- 11:49You can see it on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, wherever.
- 11:53Finally, women are embracing it now because this shift of
- 11:59encouraging women to be on the wait floor exists now, and we
- 12:02are embracing it now. The data for women over the age
- 12:05of 45 is so limited. There's so limited.
- 12:09And the data that we do have, as I stated earlier, a lot of it
- 12:12revolves around men. And that infuriates me, but it
- 12:17also makes me so passionate about educating women in general
- 12:22on how to treat their bodies so they can have longevity, they
- 12:25can have health, they can have Wellness.
- 12:26They can be the strongest versions of themselves that they
- 12:29don't even know exist. And when you are the strongest
- 12:31version of yourself, when you are happy putting on your
- 12:34clothes in the morning, you are the best wife, you're the best
- 12:37mom, you're the best friend, you're the best sister, you're
- 12:40the best coworker, you're the best neighbor.
- 12:42You're the best you you can be when you commit to making the
- 12:46changes in your life that you need to make in order to be
- 12:50stronger, in order to be healthier, in order to like what
- 12:53you see when you look in the mirror, in order to step out of
- 12:56your sweatpants and maybe once in a while, put on some jeans
- 12:59and feel good about it. It's possible, I promise you.
- 13:02And now we're going to move on to the science behind heavy
- 13:05lifting. Why does lifting heavy?
- 13:08And that's a subjective statement, but why does lifting
- 13:10weights matter? How does it benefit women over
- 13:1535? When you lift weights, that is
- 13:19stimulating neuromuscular adaptations that leads to
- 13:25increased strength and muscle mass.
- 13:28The more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism is.
- 13:35It is vital for metabolic health.
- 13:37And as I stated in the beginning of the episode, after age 35,
- 13:41you're losing .1% of your muscle every single year from this
- 13:45point on. So if you are not strength
- 13:47training to combat that natural our body's response to shed
- 13:51muscle naturally, if you're not combating that with lifting
- 13:55weights, lifting weights that are going to be heavy enough to
- 13:58stimulate that neuromuscular adaptation, then that muscle you
- 14:02had is going away. OK.
- 14:04And the muscle you think you're getting from lifting those tiny
- 14:06little 5 LB weights around in your aerobics class or your
- 14:10whatever class, that isn't going to do anything.
- 14:13That's why a lot of you who are in those classes that they toss
- 14:16around £510.00 with, that's not focused enough to actually
- 14:20stimulate neuromuscular adaptations, That's not focused
- 14:23enough to give you real strength.
- 14:26You have to be intentional about splitting your lifting sessions
- 14:31to designate muscle groups where you are honing in on really
- 14:35challenging yourself. So I want to wrap up today's
- 14:40episode with some facts and some facts that I hope will just
- 14:44drive home the objective of understanding why lifting heavy
- 14:48is not going to make you bulky in any capacity that is more
- 14:52geared towards your nutrition and how much you're eating.
- 14:54OK. Lifting weights is just going to
- 14:56increase your lean muscle mass. You don't have enough
- 14:58testosterone to look the way you're envisioning when I say
- 15:01the word bulky. Let's start at the metabolic
- 15:04rate. So lifting heavy increases
- 15:06resting metabolic rate, which means you burn more calories
- 15:10just living your life. Strength training increases your
- 15:13resting metabolic rate by about 7 1/2%.
- 15:18That's big. So if you are strength training
- 15:21consistently, know that your metabolism is going up over 7%.
- 15:25Just by living your life sitting there on the couch doing
- 15:27absolutely nothing. Your metabolism is higher.
- 15:29You can eat more food. After the age of 35, hormonal
- 15:34changes make muscle building more important than ever.
- 15:39So after 35, your estrogen goes down.
- 15:43And when your estrogen goes down, so does your muscle mass
- 15:47and function #3 And I'm going to pray tattoo this on my forehead.
- 15:51You can't tone what isn't there. So when you say I want to look
- 15:54toned, what do you have to tone? You don't have any muscle.
- 15:58What are we going to do? Tone your bones?
- 15:59That doesn't make sense. You cannot tone what is not
- 16:03there. You have to have some muscle
- 16:06there to look toned. Muscle is what gives your body
- 16:09shape. This one kind of coincides with
- 16:12the metabolic rate, but building muscle equates to burning fat
- 16:17even when you're not working out.
- 16:20Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest compared to fat
- 16:24tissue, which helps you drop fat doing nothing again just because
- 16:28you have more of a solid base. Another factoid about why
- 16:32lifting heavy will not make you bulky, but it will in fact do
- 16:36the opposite. It reduces your belly fat more
- 16:40effectively than cardio alone. Yes, you heard me, daily weight
- 16:46training is way more effective than aerobic exercise at getting
- 16:52rid of that belly fat. The belly fat I hear everybody
- 16:56complain about, including myself.
- 16:58And the reason that is, is because when you are lifting
- 17:01heavy, that builds lean muscle, which increases your resting
- 17:07metabolism and it helps your body burn fat even more when
- 17:11you're just living your life. Now, here's another little myth
- 17:15Buster for you. As you get older, your
- 17:17metabolism is not slowing down. It's not slowing down.
- 17:21What's happening is your body is slowly releasing that lean
- 17:26muscle mass after age 35 because of hormone fluctuations.
- 17:31Your estrogen, your progesterone, that's hard for me
- 17:34to say, and your growth hormone, all of those begin to gradually
- 17:38decline after age 35. And that does three things.
- 17:43That reduces your muscle mass, which lowers your metabolic
- 17:46rate, that increases your insulin resistance, which makes
- 17:51it easier to store fat, especially around the stomach
- 17:53area, and it leads to more inflammation and cortisol
- 17:57dysregulation. And I I battle that.
- 17:59I battled that. I am still battling it actively,
- 18:03but I combat it intentionally by lifting heavy, by lifting heavy,
- 18:09and by doing my high intensity interval training instead of all
- 18:13of that steady state cardio. So as your estrogen levels
- 18:17decline, that decline impacts your strength.
- 18:21Lifting helps offset that loss in strength.
- 18:26Now I could go on and on about the benefits of lifting and how
- 18:30important it is for anybody, even outside of aestheticals for
- 18:34health, longevity, your insulin sensitivity.
- 18:37I could go on. But I want to address the
- 18:40overarching point, the objective of this lesson.
- 18:43Now if you were tuned in with your listening years on, you
- 18:46will be able to answer this question.
- 18:49Why is strength training more effective than cardio alone for
- 18:54body recomposition after 35? And what that means is that
- 18:58strength training is better for dropping fat than cardio.
- 19:02Why is that? Short pause?
- 19:05And the answer is because it builds muscle, which increases
- 19:10your metabolism, it improves your insulin sensitivity, it
- 19:14balances your hormones, and it burns more fat, especially
- 19:19around the belly, than cardio does.
- 19:21Facts, and I also really want to impress this upon you before the
- 19:26end of this episode. And that is lifting heavy is
- 19:29important for both aesthetic ends of the spectrum.
- 19:33If having a little toned tiny dancer esque body is your thing,
- 19:39great. You have to lift.
- 19:41If having a stronger, more athletic presence, maybe a bit
- 19:46heavier really developed muscles is your thing, great.
- 19:50You still have to lift heavy for both looks for both the toned
- 19:55lean look. Heavy lifting builds dense
- 19:57muscle without size, it tightens up your body, it burns fat, and
- 20:01it gives you that fit but petite shape.
- 20:04And for the more muscular physique, heavy lifting is still
- 20:08the foundation, just combined with more food.
- 20:11OK, more food, more recovery to support the muscle muscle
- 20:15growth. Either way, lifting heavy.
- 20:17Improves your muscle quality, your metabolic rate, and your
- 20:20body's definition. That toned look on both ends.
- 20:24The only variable here that is to be considered is the amount
- 20:28of food you're consuming. Right now I'm in a deficit I'm
- 20:32cutting down. I kind of want to look a little
- 20:33more lean this summer, so I'm eating less food now.
- 20:38During the winter, I upped my calories.
- 20:40I focus on muscle growth For a while.
- 20:42My shoulders were a bit more developed than I liked, so I cut
- 20:45back. I cut back on lifting shoulders
- 20:47for a bit. You, it's fun.
- 20:49There are a lot of moving pieces that are all up to you.
- 20:52Shape your body, make it look the way you want.
- 20:54You have control here, nobody else.
- 20:57You. Now, if you're interested in
- 20:59beginning a strength training regimen, you can click on my
- 21:03Instagram link in the bio. You can visit my website, which
- 21:05is also in the show notes. I have an app.
- 21:08I do programming for women of any age, but I specialize for
- 21:12women above the age of 35. But if you would like just a
- 21:16free printable that will show you a few lifts you can begin
- 21:20doing at home, I'm going to include that in the show notes
- 21:23as well because my mission is to help women understand how
- 21:28attainable those physiques that you dream of are.
- 21:31So in the show notes, I'm going to put a free workout log with
- 21:35some foundational lifts you can begin doing at home with just
- 21:38your body and some dumbbells. That's all I have for you
- 21:41ladies. Thank you for tuning in to
- 21:43another episode of The Body Recomposition Revolution.
