- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello.
- 0:01Speaker 2: My name is Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud Order
- 0:05Speaker 2: Order Kerney Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before we
- 0:08Speaker 2: get started on She's on the Money podcast, I would
- 0:11Speaker 2: like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land of
- 0:14Speaker 2: which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country, acknowledging
- 0:18Speaker 2: the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming through
- 0:23Speaker 2: as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing and
- 0:27Speaker 2: the storytelling of you to make a difference for today
- 0:31Speaker 2: and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 4: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money podcasts and
- 1:00Speaker 1: millennials who want financial freedom. Welcome back to another one
- 1:04Speaker 1: of our money diaries where I get the absolute privilege
- 1:07Speaker 1: of talking to one of our beautiful She's on the
- 1:09Speaker 1: Money community members all about their money story. Now, let's
- 1:13Speaker 1: jump straight into it, because this week I got a
- 1:15Speaker 1: message and it sounded exactly like this, Dear She's on
- 1:19Speaker 1: the Money team. My mum was the breadwinner. This made
- 1:22Speaker 1: me want to be as strong and independent as her.
- 1:25Speaker 1: This hasn't been easy. I've gone from making poor financial
- 1:29Speaker 1: decisions in my early twenties and falling victim to lifestyle
- 1:32Speaker 1: creep to finally feeling somewhat in control. I've made a
- 1:36Speaker 1: conscious choice not to have children, which has caused questions
- 1:39Speaker 1: and comments both positive and negative. I've overcome the stereotypes
- 1:44Speaker 1: of being in a male dominated industry, and I've concentrated
- 1:47Speaker 1: on my career for over a decade to get to
- 1:50Speaker 1: where I am now. With no degree, I made six
- 1:53Speaker 1: figures and I'm on my way to owning a million
- 1:56Speaker 1: dollar business with the hope to retire in my fifties.
- 2:00Speaker 1: That She's on the Money podcast and Facebook group has
- 2:02Speaker 1: helped me so much by changing my mindset about all
- 2:05Speaker 1: things money. I'm hoping I can give motivation to someone
- 2:08Speaker 1: else who might be feeling the same way about being
- 2:10Speaker 1: an independent, childless boss Money Doris, I'm so excited to
- 2:15Speaker 1: this episode.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Oh me too, Me too. I'm glad to be here.
- 2:18Speaker 1: How good, Oh my gosh. I cannot wait to dive
- 2:21Speaker 1: into it, but in the perviviest way possible. Before we
- 2:24Speaker 1: get there, can you give me an idea of what
- 2:26Speaker 1: you think your money habits are If I asked you
- 2:28Speaker 1: to give them a grade from A through to F I.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Think at this point in time, i'd probably give myself
- 2:33Speaker 3: a B minus.
- 2:34Speaker 1: All right, well, let's learn a little bit more about
- 2:37Speaker 1: that money, Daris. Let's dive straight in. Can you tell
- 2:40Speaker 1: me a bit more about your money story.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. So, as I said in my intro,
- 2:46Speaker 3: Mum was the breadwinner, so she always had the full
- 2:49Speaker 3: time job, never anything too big and fancy or I guess,
- 2:53Speaker 3: but Dad just did odd jobs and it was a
- 2:55Speaker 3: bit of a laborer, so he kind of had spells
- 2:58Speaker 3: where he wasn't working. So we were comfortable, but we
- 3:01Speaker 3: weren't wealthy or anything like that. We never went without
- 3:06Speaker 3: or had any problems that way, but I definitely noticed,
- 3:10Speaker 3: probably it was like eleven or twelve, the struggle that
- 3:13Speaker 3: was about when there was like a drought coming in.
- 3:16Speaker 3: There wasn't as much work around, so we definitely had
- 3:20Speaker 3: like a little bit of a dip in what we
- 3:22Speaker 3: could do and all of those types of things. Mum
- 3:26Speaker 3: was really good because she pushed us to go out
- 3:28Speaker 3: and get jobs when we were younger, Me and my siblings,
- 3:31Speaker 3: we did work in like factories and stuff like that
- 3:33Speaker 3: during the school holidays and you know, as like you know, thirteen,
- 3:37Speaker 3: fourteen year old, she'd get all this money and then
- 3:40Speaker 3: spend it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yep. Great, I feel like I can resonate with that
- 3:44Speaker 1: part of it.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yeah, that started really really early, to be honest. So
- 3:48Speaker 3: obviously I like to spend money when I was younger,
- 3:50Speaker 3: and that didn't stop as I was getting older. And
- 3:54Speaker 3: then as I started, you know, finishing high school, working
- 3:57Speaker 3: started working full time, and as I started building in
- 4:01Speaker 3: my career, I just obviously started earning more and more
- 4:04Speaker 3: and more and more, and I absolutely got stuck with
- 4:07Speaker 3: lifestyle creep that one hundred percent. I'll put my hand
- 4:10Speaker 3: up for that one.
- 4:11Speaker 1: It's so easy, though, you just like slip into it.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And I feel like if I explain that concept to
- 4:17Speaker 1: people who haven't really spoken about their money story before,
- 4:20Speaker 1: they're like, yeah, okay, whatever, Like inflation, things get more
- 4:24Speaker 1: expensive over time, and I'm like, oh no, it's not
- 4:26Speaker 1: just inflation getting us, it's us getting us.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely, And so I was one of those people
- 4:33Speaker 3: that quite a few years ago, I did get stuck
- 4:35Speaker 3: in a bit of bad debt, and I had credit
- 4:37Speaker 3: cards and whatnot because it was kind of so open
- 4:41Speaker 3: and available. But I did learn that that was terrible
- 4:44Speaker 3: and I've got a bit of anxiety with not having
- 4:46Speaker 3: any money and whatnot. So I got myself out of that,
- 4:48Speaker 3: so that was fine, And to be honest, it wasn't
- 4:51Speaker 3: until I found the podcast that I really realized, God,
- 4:54Speaker 3: I'm not doing a good job here and I really
- 4:57Speaker 3: need to change what I'm doing. And I have so
- 5:01Speaker 3: much open to me and it's silly that I'm just
- 5:03Speaker 3: wasting it all away. So I kind of concentrated on,
- 5:07Speaker 3: you know, looking at my super and you know, making
- 5:10Speaker 3: a bit of a budget and kind of understanding what
- 5:12Speaker 3: I was doing there. But one thing that really got
- 5:14Speaker 3: me was actually having a discussion with some friends and
- 5:18Speaker 3: we're very open. You know, I've got some really good
- 5:20Speaker 3: friends that have businesses and whatnot, and having them to
- 5:24Speaker 3: bounce off and kind of, you know, realize that if
- 5:28Speaker 3: I want to be as successful as I want to be,
- 5:30Speaker 3: I really need to change my habits and my lifestyle
- 5:34Speaker 3: a little little bit.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I love that, So tell me a bit more about
- 5:37Speaker 1: this changing my lifestyle a little bit. Because you dropped
- 5:41Speaker 1: in your letter in you currently own six figures and
- 5:44Speaker 1: you're on your way to owning a multimillion dollar business, Like,
- 5:47Speaker 1: where is that coming? Into your money story because we
- 5:50Speaker 1: need to know.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so obviously I have a very good job. I
- 5:54Speaker 3: adore my job, I love what I do, and I
- 5:57Speaker 3: have been very fortunate to work with some great people
- 6:00Speaker 3: and get myself into a spot where I have the
- 6:03Speaker 3: ability to purchase into a business. And that's where that
- 6:07Speaker 3: six figures comes from. It's a huge undertaking and it
- 6:11Speaker 3: is something that's been going on for the last couple
- 6:12Speaker 3: of years, which has probably given me like the biggest
- 6:16Speaker 3: smack to kind of say, I really need to be
- 6:19Speaker 3: better with my money because this is a huge commitment
- 6:21Speaker 3: to take on. I love that.
- 6:23Speaker 1: So tell me a bit more about this business. How
- 6:25Speaker 1: do you get yourself in a position where you're earning
- 6:27Speaker 1: great money and you also have been given that opportunity,
- 6:29Speaker 1: because that's not an opportunity we all get, like so
- 6:32Speaker 1: many of us get really good jobs and it's never
- 6:34Speaker 1: on the table to buy into a business, Like how
- 6:36Speaker 1: does that eventuate?
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yeah, So, in the industry that I'm in, it basically
- 6:41Speaker 3: is people own their own small business within a business.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Basically is kind of the easiest way to work it out.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Is it a bit like a franchise without being a franchise.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So there's like one main owner and then you get
- 6:54Speaker 1: to own like a subsidiary.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Maybe No, So it's more like you own your business
- 6:58Speaker 3: and you're under an umbrella of and kels. So I
- 7:02Speaker 3: guess I'm trying to think of if there's something similar
- 7:05Speaker 3: like probably like let's say a mortgage broke it. They
- 7:07Speaker 3: might work for a certain company, but they actually own
- 7:11Speaker 3: their client base.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Yes, okay, So this is where you might be like
- 7:15Speaker 1: self employed but work for someone.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Correct, And is the benefit to you, like in that circumstance,
- 7:21Speaker 1: is the benefit to you that you get like the
- 7:23Speaker 1: brand and the exposure and you don't have to think
- 7:25Speaker 1: about that stuff. But you get to then and the
- 7:27Speaker 1: hell you know, and the admin help. Yeah, and then
- 7:29Speaker 1: you get to kind of like own your clients and
- 7:31Speaker 1: own your quote business.
- 7:33Speaker 3: That's it.
- 7:33Speaker 1: That's kind of cool, isn't it. Yeah?
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yeah, so's it's pretty full on when you look at it,
- 7:38Speaker 3: to be honest, But it doesn't come up very easily
- 7:42Speaker 3: and often for people, I'd say, you know, because it
- 7:44Speaker 3: basically comes around when people look to retire.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, And that's.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Kind of where it's come up for me. I worked
- 7:51Speaker 3: with an absolutely wonderful person who has recently retired, and
- 7:56Speaker 3: his basically plan for me is that, like, I just
- 7:59Speaker 3: look after the business at the moment and eventually I'll
- 8:03Speaker 3: buy it.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Okay, cool. I love that. So let's segue into the
- 8:07Speaker 1: next question. I need to know the pervy details. What
- 8:10Speaker 1: do you do exactly for work? And how much money
- 8:12Speaker 1: do you currently earn?
- 8:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'm an insurance broker.
- 8:16Speaker 1: That's why you knew about mortgage broking. I was like,
- 8:19Speaker 1: what is she talking about? Like and then you went
- 8:21Speaker 1: into mortgage broking. I'm like, that makes a lot of
- 8:23Speaker 1: sense to me because I own a mortgage breaking business.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But how does she know?
- 8:28Speaker 3: Okay? I was like, how do I say it without
- 8:29Speaker 3: giving it away too quickly?
- 8:31Speaker 1: I love that, Thank you for trying to keep the
- 8:33Speaker 1: illusion going.
- 8:35Speaker 3: And I earn just over one hundred and fifty thousand okay, nice,
- 8:40Speaker 3: and plus I get an annual bonus.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Okay, So tell me how that one fifty is made
- 8:45Speaker 1: up of. Is that like commissions and a base or
- 8:48Speaker 1: is that like just a set amount? And like, tell
- 8:51Speaker 1: me about this bonus. I need to know all of
- 8:53Speaker 1: the deeds.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Yeah. So basically that is just a pure salary. That's
- 8:57Speaker 3: just my salary. I don't get any commissions or or
- 9:00Speaker 3: anything like that at this stage. I'm purely just an employee.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I would be an employee for one hundred and fifty
- 9:05Speaker 1: thousand dollars, so yeah, yeah, sure, good deal.
- 9:08Speaker 3: And the bonus is basically my boss. Now she gives
- 9:13Speaker 3: me ten percent of our growth.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Oh okay, that's exciting. Does that really motivate you to
- 9:20Speaker 1: keep bringing on new clients and grow the business?
- 9:22Speaker 3: Absolutely? And to be honest, that's the reason why we've
- 9:25Speaker 3: done it this way for them, it was the best
- 9:28Speaker 3: idea to one keep me on, keep me motivated, and
- 9:33Speaker 3: make me want to, you know, bring more people in. Basically, Oh,
- 9:36Speaker 3: I love this.
- 9:37Speaker 1: That is actually such a motivating way to kind of
- 9:39Speaker 1: like build it without I feel like in this industry
- 9:43Speaker 1: sometimes it can be seen as bad to get commissions,
- 9:45Speaker 1: and I mean that's definitely a stereotype that doesn't exist anymore.
- 9:49Speaker 1: A lot of people think it's bad, but at the
- 9:52Speaker 1: end of the day, it's now set fee across the
- 9:54Speaker 1: industry and there's no real additional commissions like they used
- 9:58Speaker 1: to be. I mean, it used to be the wild,
- 10:00Speaker 1: wild West. Like you've probably been in this as long
- 10:03Speaker 1: as I've been in financial advice and mortgage broking, and
- 10:06Speaker 1: you hear all the stories of what all the conferences
- 10:09Speaker 1: and stuff used to be like, and you're like, oh,
- 10:11Speaker 1: my lord, that is not what life is like now.
- 10:13Speaker 1: We're like so vanilla. But I find it super interesting
- 10:17Speaker 1: to ask people in this industry about I guess what
- 10:20Speaker 1: they're working towards, talking about what we're working towards. What
- 10:24Speaker 1: are your big money goals? What are you currently working towards?
- 10:27Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I am hoping to buy a house soon hopefully.
- 10:31Speaker 3: And then the other big money goal is I need
- 10:33Speaker 3: to put money away because buying into a business is
- 10:37Speaker 3: quite a large expense and there will be a very
- 10:40Speaker 3: large loan attached to that.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Yeah. I was going to say, are you going to
- 10:44Speaker 1: save up for that? Or are you going to get
- 10:45Speaker 1: a business loan?
- 10:46Speaker 5: Like?
- 10:46Speaker 1: Have you looked into what servicing for that might look like?
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah? Luckily, we've actually had quite a few people around
- 10:52Speaker 3: us do similar, So I've got quite a few people
- 10:55Speaker 3: to bounce things off of and chat two and get
- 10:58Speaker 3: their opinions on how it will and all that type
- 11:00Speaker 3: of stuff. It'll be like a small chunk here and
- 11:04Speaker 3: there to start with, and.
- 11:06Speaker 1: That's the nicest way to do it. You don't have
- 11:08Speaker 1: to go whole hog and like get the biggest loan.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Ever.
- 11:12Speaker 1: How good, that's so exciting. All right, let's go to
- 11:15Speaker 1: a really quick break on the flip side. I want
- 11:17Speaker 1: to talk to you about your best and worst money habits.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I'm super pervy on those because I know that you've
- 11:22Speaker 1: changed them since joining the She's on the money community.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And I want to know a bit more about the
- 11:26Speaker 1: debt that you got yourself into when you're a little
- 11:28Speaker 1: bit earlier and didn't make as great a money decisions.
- 11:31Speaker 1: So guys, don't go anywhere. All right, money divest We
- 11:37Speaker 1: are back, And first thing off the bat, I want
- 11:39Speaker 1: to know for me, business is the biggest investment, Like,
- 11:43Speaker 1: that's where most of my money goes. Do you currently
- 11:46Speaker 1: invest If so, what in? If not, what's the plan
- 11:49Speaker 1: and how does that work for you?
- 11:51Speaker 3: Yeah? I do a little bit. So I have just
- 11:54Speaker 3: a small amount in some ETFs, so that's obviously from
- 11:58Speaker 3: listening to you, and I'll just decided to jump in
- 12:01Speaker 3: there a little bit. But I did put that on
- 12:03Speaker 3: hold from putting more in just so I could save
- 12:06Speaker 3: money for the house and do all of that type
- 12:07Speaker 3: of thing. Yeah, and then I've got my super which
- 12:10Speaker 3: is at about one hundred and twenty five thousand.
- 12:13Speaker 1: How exciting. Tell me a bit more about this investing
- 12:16Speaker 1: journey when you started, How did you pick a platform?
- 12:19Speaker 1: How did you pick the ETFs that you wanted to
- 12:21Speaker 1: invest in?
- 12:22Speaker 3: I did look at you know, spaceship and things like that,
- 12:25Speaker 3: but I decided to just use the comm sec.
- 12:29Speaker 1: YEP, perfect app feel safe right, Yeah.
- 12:32Speaker 3: And it was quite easy and there wasn't a million
- 12:36Speaker 3: choices and things to look at. It was kind of a.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Concept pocket yeah yeah, yeah, so like the one that
- 12:40Speaker 1: you got a little bit of a condensed list of
- 12:42Speaker 1: ets Yeah, okay, I love that for someone who has
- 12:45Speaker 1: analysis paralysis.
- 12:47Speaker 3: M hmmm. So it was good to just like kind
- 12:49Speaker 3: of have a read and understand a little bit as
- 12:52Speaker 3: to what they were offering and what that actually looked like,
- 12:55Speaker 3: to just like, you know, put my toes in the
- 12:57Speaker 3: water and see how it went. Yeah.
- 12:58Speaker 1: No, I love that. That's exactly how I feel like
- 13:01Speaker 1: most people start investing. And I've heard really good things
- 13:04Speaker 1: about Contact Pocket because it does have that condensed list.
- 13:06Speaker 1: You're like, okay, now I'm not looking at hundreds of them,
- 13:09Speaker 1: I like have ten, let's go from there. So that's
- 13:12Speaker 1: super exciting. Debt do you currently have any and if not,
- 13:17Speaker 1: can you tell me a bit more about your debt
- 13:19Speaker 1: story when you got yourself into a little bit of
- 13:22Speaker 1: a lifestyle creep conundrum.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Of course, Yes, I do have a car loan. Actually
- 13:28Speaker 3: was listening to one of the earlier episodes and someone
- 13:31Speaker 3: was talking about having a car loan with a balloon yeah,
- 13:34Speaker 3: and that really resonated with me because that seems terrifying,
- 13:38Speaker 3: you know, getting to the end of a loan cycle
- 13:39Speaker 3: and then having to pay a lump sum. But I
- 13:42Speaker 3: actually got my car on a balloon payment scheme. But
- 13:47Speaker 3: I spoke with the financial guy at the car yard
- 13:51Speaker 3: and I'm actually just paying extra to get it.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Paid off quicker and like not have to have Yeah.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. And basically they had like a deal going
- 14:00Speaker 3: on and the rate was so much cheaper if you
- 14:03Speaker 3: took the balloon option. Yeah.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Isn't it crazy how much they kind of incentivize you
- 14:09Speaker 1: to stay in.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Debt, Yeah exactly. But he was so good and he
- 14:13Speaker 3: just said, if you pay this much per fortnite, whatever
- 14:16Speaker 3: it is, you'll have it paid off before that date.
- 14:18Speaker 3: And you'd be all good and you won't have anything
- 14:20Speaker 3: to pay. So that was I thought, fantastic advice.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Yeah, like we're all going to go with a lower
- 14:26Speaker 1: interest rate?
- 14:27Speaker 3: Yes, please exactly. Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Does that make you feel I mean we're in the
- 14:31Speaker 1: middle of cost of living crisis? Does that also make
- 14:33Speaker 1: you feel a little bit more secure knowing that if
- 14:36Speaker 1: things hit the fan, you could lower how much you're
- 14:38Speaker 1: paying on your car and still be okay? Or is
- 14:41Speaker 1: that something that you haven't really thought of?
- 14:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess it does. While I'm in the last
- 14:45Speaker 3: like little leg of you know, saving money for a house,
- 14:49Speaker 3: it is actually quite good because I have dropped that
- 14:52Speaker 3: payment slightly just to add those extra couple of dollars
- 14:55Speaker 3: into the savings account.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it's given you a bit more flexibility.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Because I look at the you know, what's O and
- 15:00Speaker 3: blah blah blah, work out the calculation, and I'm already
- 15:02Speaker 3: way ahead than what I actually need to be. So yes,
- 15:05Speaker 3: it is. It's a nice piece of mind for sure.
- 15:07Speaker 1: And how much is your car loan right now? And
- 15:09Speaker 1: what did you take out?
- 15:11Speaker 3: So it was forty eight thousand and I've got twenty
- 15:17Speaker 3: five thousand left on it. Yeah, so I think it
- 15:21Speaker 3: should be paid off in about eighteen months.
- 15:23Speaker 1: How cool? Can I ask what type of car does
- 15:25Speaker 1: a forty eight thousand dollar loan get you?
- 15:27Speaker 3: Well? I did also have a trade in.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Oh, you're about to tell me a bougie option which
- 15:33Speaker 1: she's a fancy girl.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I actually yeah, I drive, are you?
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 15:38Speaker 3: Cool?
- 15:39Speaker 1: You don't take me as a yute gurlie.
- 15:40Speaker 3: But I love this well, to be honest, it all
- 15:43Speaker 3: fits in with my work, so I do a lot
- 15:46Speaker 3: of long driving and country and stuff like. That's so fair.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Okay, So the type of insurance broking you're in is
- 15:53Speaker 1: not like life insurance for people in the CBD. No,
- 15:57Speaker 1: it's more maybe like agricultural and farming. Is that right?
- 16:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I have a lot of that. I also specialize
- 16:04Speaker 3: in hard to place Ah cool, yeah, so big like manufacturing,
- 16:09Speaker 3: you know, basically anything that can hurt people or yeah
- 16:12Speaker 3: yeah yeah and in a bad way.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Oh that would be so interesting to do. Do you
- 16:16Speaker 1: love it in addition to it being a really good career?
- 16:18Speaker 4: Oh?
- 16:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I say to people it's stressful quite
- 16:23Speaker 3: a lot. Yea, it will be, but I absolutely love it.
- 16:25Speaker 3: I don't know what it is and whether I'm just
- 16:27Speaker 3: a weird person that likes things like that.
- 16:28Speaker 1: But ye, no you're not. I get it. I get
- 16:30Speaker 1: it all right, Tell me a bit more. You've obviously
- 16:33Speaker 1: changed your money habits more recently. What's your best money habit.
- 16:37Speaker 3: My best money habit would probably have to be that
- 16:39Speaker 3: if I decide on something, I am pretty good at
- 16:44Speaker 3: getting it done. So if I sat down one day
- 16:47Speaker 3: and said I need to change, I need to stop
- 16:50Speaker 3: spending and save a bit more, I will do it.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Like if I put a goal, then I'll cut corners
- 16:55Speaker 3: and do what I need to do to make sure
- 16:57Speaker 3: I get there. So that's probably my best one.
- 16:59Speaker 1: That's actually a fantastic habit. Like doing what I said
- 17:03Speaker 1: I was going to do is something I am not
- 17:05Speaker 1: that great at. I'm always like, oh, I'll be better
- 17:07Speaker 1: at X, or I'll be better at Y at some
- 17:10Speaker 1: point in the future, and then I don't do it.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Like if that was my money habit, I'd be so
- 17:14Speaker 1: proud of myself.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I mean, once I get to the end,
- 17:18Speaker 3: I am, and to be honest, I'm not perfect, so.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I do sometimes no one is come on.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Starter on these things, but it definitely is something that
- 17:26Speaker 3: I am. I'm glad that I can do if I
- 17:28Speaker 3: need to.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I love that. Can we flip the narrative? What are
- 17:31Speaker 1: you not so good at? What's your worst money habit?
- 17:33Speaker 3: I'm just a spendy gal ah girl.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Same what do we spendy on?
- 17:37Speaker 3: Though I'm an absolute yes man. I will say yes
- 17:41Speaker 3: to absolutely anything, so if that's a dinner, a night out,
- 17:45Speaker 3: an activity, I'm one of those people like I recharge
- 17:49Speaker 3: with others. So I'm always out about doing things. And
- 17:52Speaker 3: you know, even if you just go out for breakfast,
- 17:54Speaker 3: it's an expensive thing these days to go out for breakfast.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Why is it so expensive? My husband and I went
- 18:01Speaker 1: out on the weekend and he had like this fancy
- 18:04Speaker 1: eggs benedict thing that looked really good. I'm so basic.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I always get two poached eggs on toast, like I
- 18:09Speaker 1: can't be changed. Two coffees. It was like sixty dollars.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Be for real, be for real, Like, do you remember
- 18:17Speaker 1: back in the day it used to be like fifteen
- 18:18Speaker 1: dollars for breakfast and maybe a coffee will push it
- 18:20Speaker 1: close to twenty, but.
- 18:21Speaker 3: It wasn't exactly. And that's you add that and then
- 18:24Speaker 3: you kind of go all right, Well, I'm also going
- 18:26Speaker 3: out for dinner that night, or you know, going out
- 18:28Speaker 3: with the girls for drinks or whatever it might be.
- 18:30Speaker 3: That's usually my kryptonite. I don't don't like to say no.
- 18:36Speaker 1: It adds up, hey, Like I just I can't get
- 18:39Speaker 1: over it. And like I'm very privileged in that I'm
- 18:42Speaker 1: still able to afford to do that, Like we put
- 18:45Speaker 1: it into our budget and we make it happen, and
- 18:48Speaker 1: that's something that we really value. But it's so tough
- 18:52Speaker 1: at the moment because I look at that and I
- 18:53Speaker 1: go historically for me, I don't know about you, dinner
- 18:57Speaker 1: and breakfast, like they used to be two different price points.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Like breakfast used to be like the hey, girlfriend, let's
- 19:03Speaker 1: go out for brecky because it's like cheaper and you know,
- 19:05Speaker 1: we can go for a walk after and like it's
- 19:07Speaker 1: not the expensive option. And now I feel like I'm
- 19:10Speaker 1: spending exactly what I would at brunch on dinner like
- 19:15Speaker 1: before real I can't deal with that. That's not fair.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think that probably leads on to my
- 19:20Speaker 3: second worst habit is that I don't know where all
- 19:22Speaker 3: my money goes. So I have like it's set up
- 19:25Speaker 3: that I know that you know, when I get paid,
- 19:28Speaker 3: all my money goes to my bills and this and
- 19:30Speaker 3: this and this, and they all sit in their own accounts.
- 19:32Speaker 3: But then I just have, you know, my spending money,
- 19:36Speaker 3: and then I look at that and it just and
- 19:38Speaker 3: I don't know where it goes in the end.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Why do you think that is?
- 19:41Speaker 3: I I've just never been a person to keep track
- 19:44Speaker 3: of it. I've not ever been that person that hasn't
- 19:48Speaker 3: been able to pay something or have got to that
- 19:50Speaker 3: point where I've.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Had an issue forced into it.
- 19:53Speaker 3: And that's probably what's come from having this higher income,
- 19:56Speaker 3: is that I kind of sit there and I probably
- 19:58Speaker 3: give myself too much money to play with and I
- 20:01Speaker 3: don't need to see where it's all going or see
- 20:05Speaker 3: what's happening with it. Albeit I did just change that,
- 20:10Speaker 3: made a decision on Sunday that I do need to
- 20:13Speaker 3: cut down on my spending et cetera, et cetera, because
- 20:16Speaker 3: I'm getting so close to the buying the house situation
- 20:18Speaker 3: that I really need. Yeah, that's exciting, pull that down.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Yeah, And I feel like the second you get the house,
- 20:24Speaker 1: the spending just increases. And even if you have a
- 20:26Speaker 1: fully furnished house right now, like you will always find
- 20:29Speaker 1: things that you need to purchase in this new house
- 20:31Speaker 1: above and beyond all of the actual property costs. You're like,
- 20:34Speaker 1: oh my gosh, well, actually there's a spare corner here.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I need a side table. You might be buying it
- 20:38Speaker 1: on Marketplace, but that's still money going out the door.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Like it is wild how that compounds. I'm going to
- 20:44Speaker 1: help you out. I'm going to gift to you our
- 20:46Speaker 1: money Masterclass so that you can kind of get on
- 20:48Speaker 1: top of it, mainly because I'm really proud of it,
- 20:51Speaker 1: like I just want everyone to have it. And I
- 20:53Speaker 1: think that that'll give you really good insight into where
- 20:55Speaker 1: your money is going. And I think the best thing
- 20:58Speaker 1: is that it's all automated, so it's like really low effort.
- 21:01Speaker 1: So put all your income in, put what you're spending
- 21:04Speaker 1: in there, and it will spit out like what bank
- 21:06Speaker 1: accounts things need to go to, and like the percentages
- 21:09Speaker 1: you're spending on, which you don't need to adhere to percentages.
- 21:13Speaker 1: If you know me well enough, you know that I
- 21:15Speaker 1: don't like budgeting on percentages, but I do love knowing
- 21:18Speaker 1: what percentage of my income's going to rent or what
- 21:20Speaker 1: percentage of my income. Am I able to save, not
- 21:24Speaker 1: so that I can benchmarket against other people. I just
- 21:26Speaker 1: like being comfy with my own numbers.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Absolutely, we will love numbers.
- 21:30Speaker 1: So we will set you up with that. But what
- 21:32Speaker 1: I'm hearing right now is that you're pretty money savvy,
- 21:35Speaker 1: and I mean you're clearly being offered an epic opportunity,
- 21:39Speaker 1: like the fact that you'll be able to own a
- 21:41Speaker 1: million dollar business and potentially retire in your fifties, like
- 21:45Speaker 1: that is elite. One thing we didn't get onto that
- 21:48Speaker 1: you mentioned in your money story, because you know, like
- 21:51Speaker 1: we're here to talk about money, but this is more
- 21:53Speaker 1: of a personal thing, you said. I've made the conscious
- 21:56Speaker 1: choice to not have children, which has caused questions and
- 21:59Speaker 1: comments both positive and negative. I'd love to touch on
- 22:02Speaker 1: this because I feel like it's such a fickle space,
- 22:05Speaker 1: like and I honestly, and I do apologises. I forgot
- 22:08Speaker 1: to ask about it because it's not important to me
- 22:10Speaker 1: whether you have kids or not, but I feel like
- 22:12Speaker 1: it is really important to a lot of other people.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Often they'll go, oh, what's your name, Oh what do
- 22:16Speaker 1: you do for work? Oh do you have kids? Like
- 22:18Speaker 1: it's the next question, So tell me about that. Decision
- 22:22Speaker 1: and how hard it was to make, or like how
- 22:25Speaker 1: that's impacted your life.
- 22:26Speaker 3: To be honest, it's probably been a decision that I
- 22:30Speaker 3: made a long, long time ago, you know, it's it's
- 22:32Speaker 3: not been in the last a few years or whatever
- 22:35Speaker 3: that might be. And I've been pretty steadfast in it.
- 22:38Speaker 3: You know, when you just know something it's.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Not for you, it's not for me.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, And you know, don't get me wrong, Like,
- 22:43Speaker 3: I love my niece and I've got you know, there's
- 22:46Speaker 3: lots of people around me with babies and I love them,
- 22:49Speaker 3: but it's just not my future. I just don't see it.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I love that for you, like I just love that
- 22:54Speaker 1: you've made the decision and it works for you. Although
- 22:57Speaker 1: as this isn't on you, I just think it's really
- 23:00Speaker 1: frustrating when I'm having a conversation like this, and when
- 23:03Speaker 1: anyone's having a conversation like this, you're probably going to
- 23:06Speaker 1: agree with me here, and you know, you say, oh,
- 23:08Speaker 1: I just don't want to have kids. Often we feel
- 23:11Speaker 1: the need to then justify it and go, oh, but
- 23:13Speaker 1: I do love my nieces, and I do love my nephews,
- 23:15Speaker 1: and I really love all the other kids in my life. Like,
- 23:17Speaker 1: of course you do, Like there are other humans in
- 23:19Speaker 1: your life, like, oh, it's like my friends who are like,
- 23:22Speaker 1: oh yeah, I just don't like men, like I like
- 23:25Speaker 1: seeing women. But it doesn't mean I hate men. It
- 23:28Speaker 1: doesn't mean like we don't have to justify it. You
- 23:30Speaker 1: don't have to have kids, you don't need to do this.
- 23:32Speaker 1: You've made this conscious decision and it's in your best interests.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And I just think it's so wild that we automatically
- 23:38Speaker 1: default to feeling the need to justify our own decisions
- 23:42Speaker 1: as though we owe somebody else an explanation. And I'm
- 23:45Speaker 1: not meaning to call you out on that, but I'm
- 23:47Speaker 1: more saying, like, we all do it, and I just
- 23:50Speaker 1: look at it and go, babe, like, of course you do.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Like you've seem like a really kind, nice human and
- 23:56Speaker 1: just because you're choosing not to have children doesn't mean
- 23:58Speaker 1: you don't like them.
- 24:00Speaker 3: No, And I mean, this will, this will probably you know,
- 24:03Speaker 3: hit you a little bit. But for me, I did
- 24:07Speaker 3: make the conscious decision to tell my employer that I
- 24:12Speaker 3: wasn't going to be doing that, and in all honesty,
- 24:15Speaker 3: I think that is one of the main reasons why
- 24:18Speaker 3: I was able to get where I am.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Oh my god, that's so pervy and that pisces me off.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Yeah, because there wasn't that you know, weird thought process
- 24:29Speaker 3: that oh, she'll just go off and have kids at
- 24:32Speaker 3: some stage, so you know, we better not put too much,
- 24:34Speaker 3: you know, on them and blah blah blah blah blah, whereas.
- 24:37Speaker 1: You've just been really clear with them. Like, by the way,
- 24:39Speaker 1: this isn't for me.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Because I feel like I shouldn't have to. But at
- 24:43Speaker 3: the same time, I feel like if I didn't, then
- 24:46Speaker 3: I could have looked a bit different, if that makes sense.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Isn't it sad that that's the case, Like, I'm so
- 24:51Speaker 1: glad that you've used that to your own advantage, and
- 24:55Speaker 1: I think that women should be using every opportunity like
- 24:58Speaker 1: this to their advantage. Like, yeah, it sucks. No, I
- 25:02Speaker 1: don't want to be in this position and be put
- 25:03Speaker 1: behind because of that choice. But also we use what
- 25:07Speaker 1: we've got to use and make it work for us, right,
- 25:09Speaker 1: like get it? Yeah, And I mean, let's be honest,
- 25:12Speaker 1: if ever you decided to change your mind and had
- 25:14Speaker 1: a kid, you could be like, oh my gosh, miracle baby,
- 25:18Speaker 1: Like who saw this coming? Yeah, Oh this is meant
- 25:22Speaker 1: to be the stars are aligned and it's none of
- 25:25Speaker 1: their bloody business.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Exactly, But I guess that's probably you know, as I
- 25:29Speaker 3: mentioned in my story, you know, it is a very
- 25:32Speaker 3: male dominated industry because the way we service our clients.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Having that, you know, say, nine to twelve months off
- 25:41Speaker 3: after you've had a baby, is extremely hard to handle
- 25:46Speaker 3: from our kind of position, if that makes sense.
- 25:49Speaker 1: No, I get it as someone in finance, the way
- 25:51Speaker 1: people side eye me because I have had a baby,
- 25:54Speaker 1: and even the way people have side eyed me because
- 25:56Speaker 1: I say, oh, yeah, no, no, no, I dropped Harvey off
- 25:58Speaker 1: to daycare so it could come into recording. They're like,
- 26:01Speaker 1: Victoria is five months old, and I'm like, yep, because
- 26:03Speaker 1: like I have a career and a life, and like
- 26:05Speaker 1: this is what I've chosen. And just because I'm parenting
- 26:07Speaker 1: different to you doesn't make me a less apparent. And
- 26:10Speaker 1: I just feel like I'm probably in a situation like
- 26:12Speaker 1: you where I'm immediately defending my decisions even though I
- 26:16Speaker 1: know they're the right ones for me and my family.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Like be for real, Yeah it is. It's frustrating when
- 26:21Speaker 3: you do you have to kind of defend it in
- 26:23Speaker 3: some way. Yet if I didn't have a career or something,
- 26:27Speaker 3: someone would be judging me for that, Like, you know,
- 26:29Speaker 3: it's a never ending cycle.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Not everything is for everybody. You don't want a career, Slay,
- 26:36Speaker 1: I'm glad you know that you don't want a career.
- 26:38Speaker 1: You don't want to work, and you want to be
- 26:39Speaker 1: a stay at home mum. Like I hope that that
- 26:42Speaker 1: is the most fulfilling job you ever have, because that's
- 26:44Speaker 1: all you've ever wanted. Like, I don't care what you do,
- 26:48Speaker 1: as long as you have the tools and the resources
- 26:50Speaker 1: to make educated decisions about your life. And it is
- 26:54Speaker 1: a choice, not something you're forced into. I could not
- 26:57Speaker 1: care less.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely be.
- 27:00Speaker 1: For real Anyway, I'm glad that I asked you about
- 27:02Speaker 1: that because they feel like there are a lot of
- 27:04Speaker 1: people who would be going or how she do that?
- 27:07Speaker 1: Like what are the negative comments that people are making?
- 27:10Speaker 1: Because you mentioned here that there are like positive and negative,
- 27:13Speaker 1: and I feel like a lot of the positive are
- 27:15Speaker 1: going to be like, oh, you can focus on your career,
- 27:17Speaker 1: and oh my gosh, I'm glad you're doing the right
- 27:19Speaker 1: thing for you and get it. But like, are people
- 27:21Speaker 1: really that brazen that they're so negative?
- 27:23Speaker 3: Still? Yeah, people can be, And I guess that was
- 27:26Speaker 3: the reason why I wanted to put it in the story,
- 27:28Speaker 3: was because there are probably a lot of people out
- 27:30Speaker 3: there who do feel this way, and to be honest
- 27:33Speaker 3: to my mom a long time to understand that that
- 27:35Speaker 3: was kind of where I was going. But I'm like,
- 27:37Speaker 3: I've got siblings, I've got cousins. It's fine, babies around
- 27:40Speaker 3: and be right. But the negative comments that come out
- 27:42Speaker 3: of it always the same.
- 27:44Speaker 1: You'll change your mind, Why would I change my mind?
- 27:47Speaker 3: Always the same, And I'm like, okay, cool, maybe I do.
- 27:50Speaker 3: But it's always said with that malice of you know,
- 27:54Speaker 3: with that kind of thought process, like you're just being selfish.
- 27:58Speaker 3: You know you're not bring it out of this world,
- 28:00Speaker 3: so you're being selfish or you know this isn't what
- 28:02Speaker 3: you're meant to do, or how could you do that? Is?
- 28:05Speaker 3: It is really odd how.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Pressed someone else gets about your personal situation.
- 28:12Speaker 3: And unfortunately it's always usually comes from women.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Yes, I've noticed that. I find it wild when people
- 28:18Speaker 1: think that the decision to not have kids is selfish,
- 28:21Speaker 1: when it's probably one of the most selfless things you
- 28:23Speaker 1: can do, Like I've put me first. We are already
- 28:26Speaker 1: in a world that is arguably overpopulated. Who knows where
- 28:29Speaker 1: the world is going. It was a conundrum that I
- 28:31Speaker 1: had when my husband and I were choosing to have kids.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I was like, is this a world that we want
- 28:36Speaker 1: to bring a child into? Like is this what we
- 28:38Speaker 1: want to do? And if we are, we have to
- 28:41Speaker 1: commit fully to that, Like I don't want to be
- 28:43Speaker 1: a half parent, I don't want to be a parent.
- 28:44Speaker 1: That then decides, oh, this probably wasn't for me, Like
- 28:47Speaker 1: I wanted to be boots and all in and I am,
- 28:50Speaker 1: and I'm so glad because that's aligned to my values.
- 28:52Speaker 1: But like, I think, having become a parent, it's made
- 28:56Speaker 1: me realize now that the decision to not be a pair,
- 29:00Speaker 1: if you were even erring on the side of caution,
- 29:03Speaker 1: is a really powerful one because it's not for the weak.
- 29:07Speaker 1: It is not for the week.
- 29:08Speaker 3: No, not with all, not with all the h oh
- 29:11Speaker 3: really you know you get from people. It's actually it
- 29:14Speaker 3: gets a bit tiring at that time. So usually I
- 29:16Speaker 3: just don't say anything. I just say no, I don't
- 29:18Speaker 3: have kids.
- 29:18Speaker 1: You just look back at them and be like, oh,
- 29:20Speaker 1: and you chose to have kids with those genetics, like
- 29:22Speaker 1: be for real, all right, I want to know. Now
- 29:26Speaker 1: we've had a really good chat, and I feel like
- 29:28Speaker 1: you are one of these people that just knows themselves
- 29:30Speaker 1: and I love that, Like you know where you're going,
- 29:32Speaker 1: you know what you want out of life, Like you
- 29:34Speaker 1: graded yourself a BS, but you have a really good
- 29:37Speaker 1: grasp on what your money story was, and you're earning
- 29:40Speaker 1: great money. And you know, the one thing that you
- 29:43Speaker 1: did say was, oh, you know, I'm a bit of
- 29:44Speaker 1: a yes man. I'm a spendy goal but also my
- 29:48Speaker 1: second worst habit is that I don't know where my
- 29:50Speaker 1: money goes. And like that's so easily fixable. What would
- 29:53Speaker 1: it take to get you to an A plus?
- 29:55Speaker 3: To be honest, probably just being more aware of where
- 29:59Speaker 3: my money goes and what I'm actually spending on to
- 30:01Speaker 3: see if it's just you know, things that I can change,
- 30:05Speaker 3: you know, whether I you know, don't get a coffee
- 30:08Speaker 3: every day and I just I can make them at home.
- 30:10Speaker 3: I don't need I don't need a morning coffee every day.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Things like that. But to be honest, I think I
- 30:15Speaker 3: really need to probably speak to like a financial advisor
- 30:19Speaker 3: or something like that, just for the future planning.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I've got one for you, I will set you
- 30:25Speaker 1: up off air. I feel like that's a really good idea,
- 30:28Speaker 1: especially because you have such clarity in your career and
- 30:31Speaker 1: what you're doing, and like, let's be honest, the biggest
- 30:34Speaker 1: financial burden these kids. You already know you're not going
- 30:36Speaker 1: to have that. Okay, well, how are we making ourselves wealthy?
- 30:40Speaker 3: Yeah? And that's and that's it, because I do look
- 30:42Speaker 3: at it and I say, you know, I do have
- 30:43Speaker 3: quite a high income. I should be doing more with it,
- 30:46Speaker 3: if that makes sense, or whether that's investing, whether that's
- 30:49Speaker 3: putting it in my super or whatnot. I've obviously had
- 30:52Speaker 3: the savings for a house being the main priority, but
- 30:55Speaker 3: once that's done, I really need to probably branch out
- 30:58Speaker 3: and think about it a bit more.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I love that. All right, Well, it doesn't seem like
- 31:03Speaker 1: you're that far off an A plus money Dorris. I
- 31:05Speaker 1: have loved this conversation. I feel like it's been an
- 31:08Speaker 1: empowering chat. I hope that everyone listening is kind of like, yeah,
- 31:12Speaker 1: I love this for you, and they kind of see
- 31:14Speaker 1: that choice to not have children slightly differently, and maybe
- 31:18Speaker 1: if everyone in the Shees on the Money community goes,
- 31:21Speaker 1: you know what we're gonna actively never have a thing
- 31:23Speaker 1: to say about anybody who chooses not to have children,
- 31:26Speaker 1: because you also don't know if it's a choice. Like
- 31:29Speaker 1: I have a few girlfriends who have the hand has
- 31:33Speaker 1: kind of been forced because of fertility issues, and now
- 31:35Speaker 1: they will say, yeah, yeah, we're choosing a child free
- 31:38Speaker 1: life and it's a choice, but it wasn't really a choice,
- 31:42Speaker 1: and I feel like that's none of your damn business.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely, and that's the the hardest part. But do
- 31:48Speaker 3: we need to stop having that when you're having kids
- 31:50Speaker 3: conversation because it is it can be really triggering.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Get in the bin, all right, Well money, Doris, Thank
- 31:55Speaker 1: you so much. It has been an absolute pleasure, and
- 31:58Speaker 1: I know that our community is going to eat this
- 32:00Speaker 1: one up, so I really appreciate your willingness to share.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Thank you so much. Appreciate it.
