- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 2: for millennials who want financial freedom. After a wooly couple
- 1:05Speaker 2: of years, we are finally back traveling, but if you're
- 1:08Speaker 2: anything like us, you're likely a little out of practice.
- 1:11Speaker 2: To help you prepare for any upcoming of aks you
- 1:14Speaker 2: have planned, today, we'll be discussing the most common money
- 1:17Speaker 2: mistakes people make when they travel, so you can spend
- 1:20Speaker 2: your hard earned coin on fun things like pinacolatas or
- 1:23Speaker 2: ugly novelty fridge magnets of the Eiffel Tower. My name
- 1:27Speaker 2: is Georgia King.
- 1:28Speaker 4: You can I attack me for the gift I brought
- 1:30Speaker 4: you back from Europe. Wow, she didn't bring that back?
- 1:33Speaker 4: And we tell you.
- 1:34Speaker 2: My name is Georgia King, and joining me as always
- 1:37Speaker 2: is Victoria Divine VICKI d you have been traveling all
- 1:41Speaker 2: over the place this year, so I'm very keen to
- 1:43Speaker 2: pick your brains as to how you actually managed to
- 1:46Speaker 2: save money whilst doing so. So let's get straight into it.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Who said I saved money while traveling?
- 1:51Speaker 2: I'm just assuming you're the face of she's on the money,
- 1:55Speaker 2: good with finance, you know what.
- 1:56Speaker 4: I am pretty good with finance, so very good at traveling,
- 2:01Speaker 4: you know. Side note, I'm also very good at traveling
- 2:03Speaker 4: with only carry on luggage. Really, I know, nobody saw
- 2:08Speaker 4: that coming because I'm so like, I don't know. I'll
- 2:10Speaker 4: just give the air of being a little bit over
- 2:12Speaker 4: the top. I get it, I get it. You guys
- 2:15Speaker 4: judged me. You judged me. That's on you, not me.
- 2:19Speaker 4: But it's funny because obviously, traveling so much, it's an
- 2:22Speaker 4: absolute privilege. I adore travel, and some of it has
- 2:26Speaker 4: been for fun, but most of it has actually been
- 2:30Speaker 4: for work, and when it comes to work, like one thing,
- 2:33Speaker 4: I really I don't like being away from home. It
- 2:36Speaker 4: really sucks. I'm away from my pets, I'm away from
- 2:38Speaker 4: my family. Like it's just funny being in a different bed.
- 2:41Speaker 4: You never have as great as a sleep. You're always a
- 2:43Speaker 4: little bit angsty. I'm always worried I forgot something. So
- 2:46Speaker 4: setting myself up to travel was really important, and that
- 2:50Speaker 4: included decanting all of my favorite products because one thing
- 2:54Speaker 4: I hate is not having access to my entire skincare routine.
- 2:58Speaker 4: I know that is really lame, but when you're traveling,
- 3:01Speaker 4: to keep things as consistent as possible, I feel really helps.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Whereas you know, having done Europe recently with a group
- 3:09Speaker 4: of girlfriends, I feel like a lot of them will like, oh, yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 4: I just brought this moisturizer for the trip because it'd
- 3:14Speaker 4: fit in my bag, and I'd be like, oh, I
- 3:15Speaker 4: get that just if it's a holiday. But if I'm
- 3:18Speaker 4: traveling for work, I just want things to be the same.
- 3:20Speaker 4: I just want my stuff. But I also don't want
- 3:22Speaker 4: to spend a lot of money on the mini versions
- 3:24Speaker 4: of stuff because like even with minis, like my favorite
- 3:27Speaker 4: skincare obviously no shame here. Also not sponsored. Go to
- 3:31Speaker 4: Skincare the bloody best. Their minis don't even come out consistently.
- 3:34Speaker 4: You have to like jump on their website and try
- 3:36Speaker 4: and hack them up when they do the party packs.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I didn't know they did little minish.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Not often often. I do some of the very like
- 3:44Speaker 4: you anyway. So for me, it's not just about money saving.
- 3:47Speaker 4: It's also about travel hacks. But I feel like that
- 3:50Speaker 4: ends up saving me money. It's all about comfort at
- 3:53Speaker 4: the end of the day when traveling.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, perfect already. V Well, with all of that said,
- 3:58Speaker 2: let's jump into the most common money mistakes that we
- 4:01Speaker 2: see people making when they are traveling. The first of
- 4:04Speaker 2: which is over using data while abroad. And I know
- 4:07Speaker 2: you have a little bit of an anecdote because you
- 4:10Speaker 2: might have done a little bit of a silly and
- 4:13Speaker 2: you might have been stung with a big bill when
- 4:15Speaker 2: you got home.
- 4:16Speaker 4: I did. I'm a bit shamed of this because they
- 4:20Speaker 4: told me, they told me a million times. I just
- 4:22Speaker 4: didn't think that they were correct. So what happened was
- 4:25Speaker 4: I'd done all my research and the phone provider I'm
- 4:28Speaker 4: with gives me five dollar roaming when I'm overseas money Win, right,
- 4:32Speaker 4: I get to use all my existing data which is
- 4:34Speaker 4: unlimited money Win, and I then get to, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 4: just use it as normal five bucks a day. What
- 4:41Speaker 4: I didn't realize is that stopover when we're flying to
- 4:43Speaker 4: London in Dubai was not covered, and so I got
- 4:46Speaker 4: this message being like, hey, you're on pay as you
- 4:50Speaker 4: go and I was like, no, I'm not. So I
- 4:51Speaker 4: jumped onto the app and my phone provider has the
- 4:54Speaker 4: app that you can just do live chat with them,
- 4:56Speaker 4: and I said, hey, like, I'm overseas at the moment,
- 4:59Speaker 4: I'm traveling to London and you know, I've just got
- 5:02Speaker 4: this message. Can you please check what plan I'm on?
- 5:04Speaker 4: Because I obviously don't want to spend too much money
- 5:06Speaker 4: and they were like, no worries, let's check. Oh yep,
- 5:09Speaker 4: you're on five dollar roaming and I was like, on
- 5:10Speaker 4: money Win, Great, no worries. I keep getting these text messages.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Should I be worried? And they're like, no, you shouldn't
- 5:15Speaker 4: be worried at all. Don't know why you're getting them,
- 5:18Speaker 4: but you're definitely on the five dollar roaming plan like great,
- 5:20Speaker 4: money whim. When I got home, I got a seven
- 5:24Speaker 4: hundred dollar bill because turns out Dubai wasn't covered and
- 5:28Speaker 4: rookie era from me. I told them I was traveling
- 5:31Speaker 4: to London. I didn't say I was currently in Dubai
- 5:34Speaker 4: in my messages. They let me out of it. Definitely
- 5:37Speaker 4: give them a buzz and have a little chat. They
- 5:38Speaker 4: were very very kind. But please avoid that. Make sure
- 5:43Speaker 4: you don't do yourself a dirty because seven hundred bucks
- 5:46Speaker 4: is a lot of money and I was almost sick
- 5:48Speaker 4: when I saw that, So make sure if you're traveling,
- 5:51Speaker 4: maybe can sider out what your roaming plan is. I mean,
- 5:54Speaker 4: for me, five bucks a day worked out. But when
- 5:56Speaker 4: we were recently in America, I know all of the
- 5:59Speaker 4: my Millennial Money team there with a different phone carrier,
- 6:02Speaker 4: so they went and got SIM cards and they put
- 6:04Speaker 4: different SIM cards in their phone so they could have
- 6:07Speaker 4: access to the internet, access to a phone for not
- 6:09Speaker 4: an exorbitant amount of money. So that was a way
- 6:12Speaker 4: they did it. Obviously, most places nowadays have Wi Fi,
- 6:15Speaker 4: so maybe choose to just travel with Wi Fi only
- 6:18Speaker 4: and download the maps that you need and download the
- 6:20Speaker 4: things to your phone so you don't have to use
- 6:23Speaker 4: roaming at all. Switch off location services and push notifications
- 6:27Speaker 4: because they actually use data, especially if you're limited. Airplane
- 6:32Speaker 4: mode also saves a whole heap of Bachery power and
- 6:35Speaker 4: turn off any automatic roaming charges, so make sure that
- 6:39Speaker 4: it's not automatic if you don't have a super slick.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Plan like I do Brilliant that kind of happens in
- 6:45Speaker 2: the background, doesn't it with some of our apps like
- 6:46Speaker 2: they do fresh.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Download the updates Like I don't want to have to
- 6:51Speaker 4: go in and manually update my apps, so I always
- 6:54Speaker 4: have it on. Just fix it when it needs fixing,
- 6:56Speaker 4: because I don't have an issue with data on my phone,
- 6:59Speaker 4: just as the plan, it's not an issue. But for
- 7:02Speaker 4: exactly you could find yourself in a little pickle if
- 7:04Speaker 4: your SIMS app and it's updating, gotcha?
- 7:07Speaker 2: If your sims app love that the next on our
- 7:09Speaker 2: list is not accounting for conversion rates? How significant can
- 7:14Speaker 2: this actually be when we're traveling and how can we
- 7:17Speaker 2: prevent getting stung?
- 7:18Speaker 4: Look, I feel like this is really relatable for so
- 7:21Speaker 4: many listeners because we've all been there. We'd all just
- 7:23Speaker 4: look at it and go, oh, that shouldn't be too much.
- 7:26Speaker 4: When we traveled to London, Holy moly, that was so expensive.
- 7:31Speaker 4: And again my privilege is absolutely showing here. I've traveled before,
- 7:36Speaker 4: not my first rodeo in London, been a few times,
- 7:39Speaker 4: and historically the conversion or the exchange rate was not
- 7:42Speaker 4: nearly as high as it currently is, So in my
- 7:45Speaker 4: head I was like, yeah, no worries, it's probably x
- 7:47Speaker 4: amount more. So I thought I was doing it correctly.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I was wrong, though, and it doesn't mean I was out,
- 7:52Speaker 4: like we did fix it, but I was shocked because
- 7:55Speaker 4: I was like, oh wait, so ten pounds there ended
- 7:58Speaker 4: up being like twenty five dollars here and I was like,
- 8:00Speaker 4: oh whoa, Like that's not what I expected. Last time
- 8:03Speaker 4: it was like basically double yeah, and it was like
- 8:06Speaker 4: slightly more when I traveled, so be on top of it.
- 8:09Speaker 4: One of the things I'm really lame. I'm basically like
- 8:12Speaker 4: your mum, George, like you know this, like you know
- 8:14Speaker 4: this about me. I carry a pencil case in my handbag.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I carry an emergency first aid kid, like I'm that guy,
- 8:20Speaker 4: just like like you know what you need a bandaid, babe,
- 8:22Speaker 4: I've got you. Do you want a breath mint? I've
- 8:25Speaker 4: also got that mini toothbrush. Don't hurry a pandole. Everything
- 8:29Speaker 4: is in my handbag. I have got you. So what
- 8:31Speaker 4: I also want you to put in your handbag is
- 8:34Speaker 4: on the back of the like post it note or something.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I just wrote down the conversions, because as much as
- 8:39Speaker 4: you have your phone, I totally get it. Whenever I
- 8:41Speaker 4: opened my wallet, I wanted it right there, so I'd
- 8:44Speaker 4: be like, one pound equals this. However, you don't just
- 8:47Speaker 4: want one for one because I don't want to do
- 8:48Speaker 4: the maths. So I always just did the most common
- 8:51Speaker 4: amounts that I thought i'd be sending, So twenty pounds
- 8:54Speaker 4: equals this, ten pounds equals this, and then I could
- 8:56Speaker 4: just double it in my head if I needed to.
- 8:59Speaker 4: So the one pound equals two pound equals So that's
- 9:02Speaker 4: not helpful. Just do like one pound and then like
- 9:04Speaker 4: ten pounds and twenty pounds and five pounds and whatever
- 9:07Speaker 4: you think that you're going to most regularly use, so
- 9:10Speaker 4: that it's just front of mind, because I think once
- 9:13Speaker 4: you get overseas into a different culture, into a different area,
- 9:16Speaker 4: kind of just slips your mind. You're like, oh, five
- 9:18Speaker 4: pounds doesn't sound that expensive, George, that's like twelve dollars fifty.
- 9:22Speaker 4: I mean, it's just so much money. The other thing
- 9:25Speaker 4: I would say is surprisingly obviously each to their own.
- 9:29Speaker 4: I don't carry cash when I travel anymore. I really
- 9:32Speaker 4: rely on you using my debit card. I think, having
- 9:36Speaker 4: traveled to places like London in France, that's fine. Obviously,
- 9:39Speaker 4: if you're going to more Third world countries that might
- 9:41Speaker 4: not be as accessible. But the one thing I would
- 9:43Speaker 4: say is do not exchange currency at the airport. They
- 9:48Speaker 4: charge a premium. Either organize it before you go. There's
- 9:51Speaker 4: lots of places around the city that do it, or
- 9:53Speaker 4: once you get to your location, then go into town
- 9:57Speaker 4: and exchange some money there, or get it out atm
- 10:01Speaker 4: It usually ends up being a little bit more cost
- 10:03Speaker 4: effective than anything.
- 10:04Speaker 2: At the airport.
- 10:05Speaker 4: They almost always have significantly higher fees. One because of
- 10:08Speaker 4: the location, they have higher rent and costs to cover,
- 10:11Speaker 4: but also they're not going to give you a hot deal.
- 10:13Speaker 4: They've got the monopoly at the airport. Do you need cash,
- 10:16Speaker 4: you're at the airport, what are you gonna do pay us? Okay, yeah, exactly.
- 10:20Speaker 4: So it's really hard and they often can just afford
- 10:22Speaker 4: to hyke up the price because they don't care. And
- 10:24Speaker 4: then I would make sure that you let your bank
- 10:27Speaker 4: know that you are traveling. The reason being is obviously
- 10:31Speaker 4: if you've only ever been in Australia and then if
- 10:33Speaker 4: a charge comes up in London, they might go ooh fraud. Yeah,
- 10:36Speaker 4: So definitely let them know that you're traveling, just so
- 10:38Speaker 4: that your car doesn't get put on hold or canceled
- 10:41Speaker 4: while you're broad because that can be a pickle in itself.
- 10:44Speaker 4: But most banks won't charge fees when you're abroad if
- 10:47Speaker 4: you let them know, so definitely give them a buzz,
- 10:50Speaker 4: see what's going on, see how it works. And I
- 10:53Speaker 4: would argue that in twenty twenty two, if your bank
- 10:55Speaker 4: does charge fees, go find a different on that you
- 10:57Speaker 4: can have for that period of time because it's on
- 10:59Speaker 4: a not worth it. One of the best ways, as
- 11:02Speaker 4: I said before, to avoid overly expensive foreign exchanges actually
- 11:06Speaker 4: just to withdraw money from a local ATM. Make sure
- 11:09Speaker 4: you're not getting scammed. Obviously, make sure there's no like
- 11:12Speaker 4: skimming devices on it. Only in a safe location, but
- 11:15Speaker 4: that's what I would be doing. Brilliant You said that
- 11:18Speaker 4: you usually just have your debit card when you're traveling VD,
- 11:22Speaker 4: So if you're at Starbucks and you're buying a VENTI
- 11:25Speaker 4: bloody caramel mochacino. Was actually buying a Venti Strawberry SI refresher,
- 11:30Speaker 4: just so you know, you you're up there ordering that
- 11:33Speaker 4: and you do you tap and go. Yeah, they all
- 11:35Speaker 4: had tap, do you know what? I was really surprised
- 11:38Speaker 4: because I had heard in America they didn't have tap.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Everywhere that we went in America recently they also had taps,
- 11:43Speaker 4: so that was really easy. There was no issue at all.
- 11:46Speaker 4: And the bank I bank with doesn't have any fees.
- 11:49Speaker 4: They just charge you the currency conversion, so there weren't
- 11:51Speaker 4: any additional fees for using her card.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Beautiful.
- 11:53Speaker 4: The thing I liked about using a debit card as
- 11:56Speaker 4: well was I knew how much money was on there,
- 11:58Speaker 4: so like I was just transfer an amount that I
- 12:00Speaker 4: was comfortable with. So I might put two hundred or
- 12:03Speaker 4: three hundred dollars on there to start with, and then
- 12:05Speaker 4: just see how I went. And all my other money
- 12:08Speaker 4: was left in my savings account or in a different account.
- 12:11Speaker 4: It meant that I didn't have that anxiety of like,
- 12:13Speaker 4: if I lose my bank card, they can take all
- 12:15Speaker 4: my money. So I just had enough on there to
- 12:17Speaker 4: you know, leave and do well. And I was just
- 12:20Speaker 4: keeping track of.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It perfect, okay, cool. Good to know I'm getting the
- 12:24Speaker 2: next one out of the way early on in the show,
- 12:27Speaker 2: because I feel like everyone listening knows that it is
- 12:29Speaker 2: coming right, and that is that the third money mistake
- 12:33Speaker 2: people make when traveling is not having a travel.
- 12:36Speaker 4: In Shaky, it was coming.
- 12:39Speaker 2: They took us through once again and what the key
- 12:41Speaker 2: dangers of not having travel insurance are and how much
- 12:44Speaker 2: money we could actually lose by not having it.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Look, well, everyone tends to think of and we did
- 12:48Speaker 4: an entire episode on travel insurance, so please go back
- 12:51Speaker 4: and listen to it, because I think I'm intelligent, like
- 12:55Speaker 4: we're just trying our best out here. But while everyone
- 12:58Speaker 4: seems to think the travel insurance is just for lost
- 13:00Speaker 4: luggage or stolen laptops, what we really need it for
- 13:04Speaker 4: is our ability to access healthcare abroad and to get
- 13:08Speaker 4: home if something really awful happens. Or this sounds bad,
- 13:11Speaker 4: but if we die and our body needs to be
- 13:13Speaker 4: returned to Australia. It's expensive, it's also morbid, but it
- 13:17Speaker 4: is true. I don't want my family to have to
- 13:19Speaker 4: pay for that if the worst thing in the entire
- 13:22Speaker 4: world happens. For that reason, I would obviously obviously encourage
- 13:27Speaker 4: people to get comprehensive travel insurance, and I really wouldn't
- 13:30Speaker 4: bother with anything less than that. Is that bad to say? Like,
- 13:33Speaker 4: I know that's entitled, and I know that you know
- 13:36Speaker 4: it's expensive, but travel in itself is a privilege. But
- 13:39Speaker 4: we really need to be putting ourselves first, and that's
- 13:41Speaker 4: really really important to me. I would forego, you know,
- 13:44Speaker 4: a more expensive hotel to make sure that I was
- 13:47Speaker 4: properly covered and safe. Obviously, don't go with the dodgy
- 13:50Speaker 4: hotel where you're going to be unsafe and you will
- 13:52Speaker 4: have to claim on your travel insurance. But you know
- 13:54Speaker 4: what I mean, if you're unconvinced. Gee, King, you don't
- 13:57Speaker 4: look unconvinced, But I'm just going to play the Devil's
- 13:59Speaker 4: out shit here. Imagine if you got into an accident
- 14:03Speaker 4: and then you had to use years and years of
- 14:05Speaker 4: your life savings which I know you have been hoarding
- 14:08Speaker 4: for a very long time for medical treatment or getting
- 14:11Speaker 4: evacuated from overseas, when you could have just paid a
- 14:13Speaker 4: few hundred dollars at the start to cover yourself. Because
- 14:17Speaker 4: this is gonna sound morbid again, because I am quite morbid.
- 14:19Speaker 4: My favorite podcast is literally called morbid to go hit
- 14:22Speaker 4: them up. I really like them. But if you die overseas,
- 14:24Speaker 4: it can cost more than twenty grand to get your
- 14:26Speaker 4: body home.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Which is crazy, which is crazy.
- 14:28Speaker 4: And if you don't die, get this, it's even more
- 14:32Speaker 4: expensive to get you home if you're in a medical emergency.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Careful.
- 14:36Speaker 4: I had a client and also we had a money
- 14:39Speaker 4: diarist ages ago. I don't know if you remember this,
- 14:42Speaker 4: but money Diarist was talking about being in a whole
- 14:45Speaker 4: heap of debt because she didn't have travel insurance. Her
- 14:48Speaker 4: partner came off of scooter in Bali and had to
- 14:51Speaker 4: be medically evacuated from Bali to Perth because that's the
- 14:54Speaker 4: closest flights more than one hundred thousand dollars.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Oh my hat Mgandhi.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Travel insurance is obviously not a waste of money. It's
- 15:02Speaker 4: just being smart. And I know that some people will say, oh,
- 15:05Speaker 4: but it is a waste of money because I never
- 15:06Speaker 4: claimed on it. Great, that's actually an investment. I want
- 15:09Speaker 4: you to have insurance as the biggest waste of money
- 15:12Speaker 4: in your entire life, because it means you're fine and
- 15:14Speaker 4: it keeps you safe.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Right, there's a little angel called pastor Mama Plant Mama.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I've spoken about her before on the podcast. She was
- 15:22Speaker 2: recently in Greece and had appendicitis or something, so she
- 15:26Speaker 2: needed emergency surgery. It was a horrible, horrible experience, but
- 15:30Speaker 2: she had travel insurance.
- 15:31Speaker 4: It was covered. It was covered.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Imagine if you didn't have it and you have to
- 15:33Speaker 2: be like, wow, I need my appendix out. That's one
- 15:36Speaker 2: option or the other option is like, I mean, you
- 15:38Speaker 2: probably do always need it out in that situation, but
- 15:41Speaker 2: you shouldn't put yourself in a position where you have
- 15:43Speaker 2: to question whether or not you should seek medical treatment, right, Yeah,
- 15:46Speaker 2: And that's what insurance undred percent. I think to take
- 15:50Speaker 2: that a step further as well, is if that happens
- 15:53Speaker 2: and you don't have travel insurance, Gee, who are you
- 15:56Speaker 2: going to ask? If you have travel insurance. You pick
- 15:59Speaker 2: up the phone and you say, hey, I'm in a pickle.
- 16:02Speaker 4: What do I do? They say, where are you? You say,
- 16:04Speaker 4: I'm in Indonesia. They go, great, this is the process.
- 16:07Speaker 4: This is a doctor you're going to This is how
- 16:08Speaker 4: it's going to work. And it's not just the insurance,
- 16:11Speaker 4: it's not just the medical cover. It's the you have
- 16:13Speaker 4: somebody that knows because they're travel insurers. They have done
- 16:18Speaker 4: this for a living. They know everyone in the area.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Doesn't matter where in the world you are, they are
- 16:22Speaker 4: going to make sure that you're well looked after. They
- 16:24Speaker 4: might organize the transport. They will literally do everything to
- 16:28Speaker 4: make sure you're okay. It's not about going all right, well, gee,
- 16:31Speaker 4: just claim it back when you get home. They are
- 16:33Speaker 4: literally there to support you as well. And to me,
- 16:36Speaker 4: that gives me a whole heap of peace of mind.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Yeah. Nice. Also on travel insurance, remembering that we only
- 16:41Speaker 2: need it when we are overseas. We don't need it
- 16:43Speaker 2: for our trip tomildurum V. You know, not for the locals. V.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Last on our list before we head to a little
- 16:49Speaker 2: break is last minute booking. So that could be our
- 16:52Speaker 2: fly it's our accommodation. Can you talk us through why
- 16:55Speaker 2: prices generally go up closer to the date of our
- 16:59Speaker 2: departure because you haven't charge desperate people.
- 17:01Speaker 4: A lot of money. I'm willing to pay a reason.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I learned that painfully when we went to America. I
- 17:08Speaker 4: have known that we were going to America for a
- 17:10Speaker 4: very long time, but dragged my feet booking flights because
- 17:13Speaker 4: I wasn't sure if I wanted to extend the trip
- 17:15Speaker 4: or not, and you know, it was really hard, but
- 17:18Speaker 4: it was much more expensive. Interestingly, Skyscanner says this is
- 17:23Speaker 4: actually decatered to quote last minute business travelers who need
- 17:26Speaker 4: to travel on short notice and are willing to pay
- 17:28Speaker 4: a premium to do so. And I mean that's certainly
- 17:31Speaker 4: the case when it comes to major cities, but kind
- 17:33Speaker 4: of rude if I want to go last minute Bali
- 17:35Speaker 4: trip with the girls, like we got that last minute
- 17:38Speaker 4: public holiday.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Yes, I wish we knew about that.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Wish we'd known about that recently, But that's okay. So
- 17:44Speaker 4: the earlier you book your flights or know that you're
- 17:47Speaker 4: in the market to book flights, the more time you're
- 17:49Speaker 4: actually going to have to stay on the lookout for
- 17:51Speaker 4: some promotional deals from airlines that might make some flights
- 17:54Speaker 4: more affordable. Obviously, if you can be flexible with your
- 17:57Speaker 4: dates or time, that is going to help you score
- 18:00Speaker 4: a deal. One hot tip that I have is always
- 18:02Speaker 4: making sure that you know when school holidays are not
- 18:05Speaker 4: only for you when you're traveling, but for the location
- 18:07Speaker 4: you're traveling too, Because, for example, I took just to
- 18:11Speaker 4: Disneyland during school holidays in America, Sily, silly girls, learn
- 18:16Speaker 4: from my mistakes, babies. But it's actually a little bit
- 18:20Speaker 4: less clear when it comes to accommodation. So obviously flight's
- 18:22Speaker 4: more expensive. But when I was reading up before this episode,
- 18:25Speaker 4: a lot of people have had the experience that they
- 18:27Speaker 4: scored cheaper deals the longer they waited. My anxiety count. Yes,
- 18:32Speaker 4: as much as I might have waited to book the flights,
- 18:34Speaker 4: I'd already booked the accommodation the second I booked to
- 18:36Speaker 4: the conference. Obviously, if you're traveling during a peak period
- 18:40Speaker 4: like summer or school holidays, things aren't going to be
- 18:42Speaker 4: as flexible, So I guess that's something to keep in mind.
- 18:44Speaker 4: G King, of course, you'll have fewer options to work
- 18:47Speaker 4: with because things might be booking out, especially if it
- 18:49Speaker 4: is a peak travel period. I was talking to a
- 18:52Speaker 4: girlfriend the other day. She was talking about coming to
- 18:54Speaker 4: Melbourne yep, and the weekend she was picking was actually
- 18:57Speaker 4: the GP weekend. Oh yeah, but we didn't know because
- 19:00Speaker 4: you don't pay attention to the GP. She's like, everything's
- 19:02Speaker 4: booked out and so expensive, and I was like, there
- 19:04Speaker 4: must be something going on, yes, so check if there's
- 19:07Speaker 4: something going on a big event, leaving it to the
- 19:10Speaker 4: last minute because you want a better deal, but then
- 19:12Speaker 4: finding out there's a big event and the place that
- 19:14Speaker 4: you're going to is actually going to shoot yourself in
- 19:16Speaker 4: the foot. You're going to end up either with real
- 19:18Speaker 4: dank dingy accommodation or paying a massive premium to go
- 19:23Speaker 4: on the holiday you had planned. So obviously, if you're keen,
- 19:26Speaker 4: do research earlier. But if you've got a hotel or
- 19:28Speaker 4: an airbnb that you're super keen on, I would absolutely
- 19:31Speaker 4: suggest booking in. Also other hot tip, sometimes paying the
- 19:36Speaker 4: little bit extra, like if you're on what if dot
- 19:38Speaker 4: com or whatever for the room that is refundable is
- 19:41Speaker 4: helpful because what you can do is call it the
- 19:43Speaker 4: hotel and be like, hey, I'm very aware that prices
- 19:45Speaker 4: have gone down, could you just switch me to the
- 19:48Speaker 4: lawer rate. But if you paid the super cheap option
- 19:50Speaker 4: at the very start, and they're like, now it's really
- 19:52Speaker 4: on repuntable. Sorry, it is what it is.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Hot tip, she's.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Slipped that one in exactly right.
- 20:00Speaker 2: We are going to take a little pause here, But
- 20:02Speaker 2: on the other side, we're going to be chatting through
- 20:04Speaker 2: our last few days to save money. When traveling, so
- 20:06Speaker 2: stick around. I will straight back into it VD. The
- 20:14Speaker 2: next most common mistake people make is not having a
- 20:17Speaker 2: plan or transport organized from the airport, so spinfl felt
- 20:22Speaker 2: that as well, can you folesh this one out for me?
- 20:25Speaker 4: Okay, So this one is something that really grinds my gears,
- 20:28Speaker 4: especially because I don't know if you've done this recently,
- 20:31Speaker 4: Georgia King, but even ubers are far more expensive from
- 20:36Speaker 4: the airport. So something that I've done recently is learn
- 20:39Speaker 4: about travel forums. So it might be on like trip
- 20:42Speaker 4: Advisor or even just other random travel forums. Look up
- 20:45Speaker 4: transport in your city and see what other people are
- 20:48Speaker 4: doing and what like the cheapest or best option is.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Because I know that we benefited when we were on
- 20:53Speaker 4: our euro trip, and I mean, jessic Ricci was not
- 20:56Speaker 4: very impressed with me because I made her walk a
- 20:58Speaker 4: bit and she is a chronic overpawer, so she had
- 21:00Speaker 4: to drag her suitcase. But one of the hot tips
- 21:03Speaker 4: that I learned on that travel forum was that this
- 21:06Speaker 4: airport that we were flying into really expensive ubers, but
- 21:09Speaker 4: if you walk to the local McDonald's and then call
- 21:12Speaker 4: an uber, it's like half the price. So I was like,
- 21:14Speaker 4: we're definitely doing that absolutely well and truly, and Jess
- 21:18Speaker 4: was like, do we have don and I was like, yes,
- 21:20Speaker 4: drag that suitcase. That was your choice that you made.
- 21:22Speaker 4: You did this to yourself, so it's really important to
- 21:25Speaker 4: do some research. Unfortunately, just like the currency exchanged chaosks
- 21:29Speaker 4: at the airport, taxis basically have a monopoly at airports,
- 21:32Speaker 4: like they get prime positions, So if you haven't organized
- 21:35Speaker 4: driver ahead of time, it's very likely that you're going
- 21:37Speaker 4: to be stung with the surcharge on the taxi or
- 21:40Speaker 4: as I said before, on the Uberville. Obviously, greater demand
- 21:43Speaker 4: equals higher price if you're going to places like Bali.
- 21:47Speaker 4: On a lot of these travel forums, they have recommendations
- 21:50Speaker 4: of specific drivers who will pick you up if you
- 21:52Speaker 4: wack them, so you just message them on WhatsApp and
- 21:55Speaker 4: you know you organize that. Obviously, safety is paramount, so
- 21:59Speaker 4: only do it if it is tried, true and tested.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Don't just book random people and hope that you're getting
- 22:04Speaker 4: a good deal, because at the end of the day,
- 22:07Speaker 4: one thing that I always do when I travel is
- 22:09Speaker 4: make sure I have good transportation to and from the
- 22:13Speaker 4: airport because you usually have the most luggage. It's the
- 22:15Speaker 4: hardest to get around, Whereas I'm very unlikely to prebook
- 22:19Speaker 4: any transportation to activities and stuff because I'm like, great,
- 22:21Speaker 4: I just have my handbag, Like I could jump on
- 22:23Speaker 4: a train, I could get in an uber, I could
- 22:25Speaker 4: get one of the scooters. Like, there's so many transportation options,
- 22:28Speaker 4: but when you have luggage, it is much much harder, Right,
- 22:31Speaker 4: That's good. Cool, And also we forget to budget for it.
- 22:35Speaker 4: We're like, okay, airfare's accommodation, all of this. You forgot
- 22:38Speaker 4: the taxi in between. That's maybe another sixty bucks that
- 22:40Speaker 4: you just didn't see coming. And what's that nice dinner out?
- 22:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a lot. Good point, it's a lot.
- 22:46Speaker 4: So if you're not in a rush, though, and have
- 22:48Speaker 4: obviously landed a safe time of night, obviously don't be
- 22:51Speaker 4: afraid to consider public transport options. Again, the group of
- 22:55Speaker 4: girls I went to Europe with when not impressed with
- 22:56Speaker 4: me when I was like, we are getting the tube
- 22:58Speaker 4: to our hotel, but I'd organized it so that it
- 23:02Speaker 4: was flawless. They were safe, they were fine, they were
- 23:04Speaker 4: a little bit tired, But I was also not spending
- 23:06Speaker 4: one hundred pounds to get from the airport to the
- 23:10Speaker 4: hotel that we were staying at. Sillytok, we don't do that.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Look into public transport options, they are almost always at
- 23:17Speaker 4: every single international airport, Yes, set Melbourne.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the bus which can take you to like
- 23:25Speaker 2: Southern Cross Basket too hot. That might be sorting out
- 23:28Speaker 2: a little train line. Look, I've heard about it.
- 23:31Speaker 4: But also can you imagine Skybus wouldn't be very happy
- 23:34Speaker 4: about that, or if I owned Skybus, I wouldn't be
- 23:36Speaker 4: very happy about anyway. That's obviously a more economical option,
- 23:39Speaker 4: and I definitely would recommend it because if it's good
- 23:42Speaker 4: enough for me, I guarantee it's good enough.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that is true. Let's move on to our next point,
- 23:46Speaker 2: which ties into our last one quite neatly, I think,
- 23:49Speaker 2: And that is a general lack of organization. So exactly
- 23:54Speaker 2: like you just said, if we don't have travel planned
- 23:57Speaker 2: from the airport or from our hotel, whatever it may be,
- 23:59Speaker 2: that can really add to how much we have to
- 24:02Speaker 2: spend when we are traveling. But also like not having
- 24:05Speaker 2: your bag organized and having your money and your passport
- 24:08Speaker 2: floating around frivolously. Also you know, not being organized enough
- 24:12Speaker 2: to make the most of services like shop back, like
- 24:14Speaker 2: things like that.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Yeah, one hundred percent. And obviously I would love to
- 24:17Speaker 4: think of myself as like the most organized disorganized person,
- 24:21Speaker 4: Like I'm disorganized ninety percent of the time, but when
- 24:24Speaker 4: it comes to the important things, like all right I
- 24:26Speaker 4: am traveling, I will be very meticulous and organized because
- 24:29Speaker 4: it lowers my anxiety, let's be honest. So I think
- 24:32Speaker 4: one thing to do is actually create a plan, because
- 24:35Speaker 4: things like overweight baggage charges are so much money, and
- 24:39Speaker 4: when you're not organized, you tend to overpack, and if
- 24:41Speaker 4: you're overpacking, you're more likely to get that. And one
- 24:44Speaker 4: thing that I always used to forget was factoring in
- 24:47Speaker 4: the fact that I'm probably going to do some shopping
- 24:49Speaker 4: while I'm overseas and want to bring back stuff. So
- 24:51Speaker 4: I might pack my bag perfectly and it all just fits,
- 24:54Speaker 4: but like what if I find a really cute top
- 24:56Speaker 4: in Spain that I want to bring home, you know,
- 24:58Speaker 4: So I think it's important to always have a little
- 25:00Speaker 4: bit of flexibility on that. So I'd always advocate making
- 25:04Speaker 4: sure that you sort yourself out with a plan before
- 25:06Speaker 4: you go, and make sure that you are you know,
- 25:09Speaker 4: being smart about it, as you said, g making use
- 25:11Speaker 4: of services like shot back again, not sponsored recommendation, just
- 25:15Speaker 4: genuinely a good recommendation. But booking accommodation and flights ahead
- 25:19Speaker 4: of time so you can avoid surg charges and surging
- 25:21Speaker 4: prices is really smart. Making sure that you are looking
- 25:25Speaker 4: up the best deal. Sometimes the best deal is actually
- 25:28Speaker 4: through a travel agent. And I know that a lot
- 25:29Speaker 4: of people are, oh, sure, that could be more expensive.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Sometimes they have access to just better deals or can
- 25:35Speaker 4: bundle things together and be like, all right, well I
- 25:38Speaker 4: can give you a discount because there's five girls traveling,
- 25:40Speaker 4: do you know what I mean? So I think it's
- 25:41Speaker 4: always worth asking. It doesn't necessarily mean you have to
- 25:44Speaker 4: book with them. And so from my perspective, making sure
- 25:48Speaker 4: that you just have appropriate travel gear is really helpful.
- 25:51Speaker 4: If you're going to do Europe and you're going to
- 25:52Speaker 4: go all the way through Spain and France and Morocco,
- 25:55Speaker 4: and you know, obviously Morocco is not Europe, it is
- 25:58Speaker 4: so Africa. And I just saying that because that's the
- 26:01Speaker 4: trip I did last time or a few years ago. Yeah,
- 26:04Speaker 4: bags with wheels not ideal. No, so many cobblestones, so
- 26:09Speaker 4: many cobblestones. So make sure that you are really taking
- 26:11Speaker 4: into consideration what type of luggage you are taking before
- 26:14Speaker 4: going to that location, because do you know what, I
- 26:17Speaker 4: would have much preferred if someone had told me just
- 26:19Speaker 4: take a backpack, like take one of those big backpacks
- 26:21Speaker 4: and you will be fine. Wouldn't have been as sexy,
- 26:24Speaker 4: would have been way more practical. Yes, So making sure
- 26:27Speaker 4: that you are booking ahead and planning ahead is not
- 26:29Speaker 4: only going to save you money, but also save you
- 26:31Speaker 4: stress while you are there. It's also obviously a great
- 26:34Speaker 4: idea to get something like a travel wallet so you
- 26:36Speaker 4: can stash your passport and your cash away and feel
- 26:39Speaker 4: really safe, especially if you're traveling so low. I feel
- 26:43Speaker 4: like if you fall asleep and your bag's on your lap,
- 26:45Speaker 4: you're just not going to feel as secure, whereas having
- 26:47Speaker 4: like a travel wallet that's actually strapped to you, with
- 26:50Speaker 4: your passport and your money in it, You're just going
- 26:52Speaker 4: to feel a little bit safer. I'd obviously also recommend
- 26:56Speaker 4: organizing transport to the airport to avoid ridiculous taxi prize. Obviously,
- 27:01Speaker 4: drivers know you don't have another choice, so they just yeah,
- 27:03Speaker 4: it is what it is. Stay stranded, my love. But
- 27:07Speaker 4: it's also super exciting, so TLDR of all of that
- 27:10Speaker 4: G is the more organized you can be, the more
- 27:12Speaker 4: planned you can be, and the more organized, the more
- 27:14Speaker 4: comparable you can make it right, the more things you
- 27:16Speaker 4: can compare and work out what activities you want to
- 27:18Speaker 4: do and what activities you don't want to do. Obviously,
- 27:21Speaker 4: I am a bit of a spreadsheet fiend, and I
- 27:24Speaker 4: have a lot of travel spreadsheets. Maybe I need to
- 27:26Speaker 4: upload them to my website or something so people can
- 27:28Speaker 4: download them. But I literally plan out everything and then
- 27:32Speaker 4: based on what I want to do. I also before
- 27:34Speaker 4: I even work out what I want to see, I
- 27:37Speaker 4: go all right, g if we're going to travel together, like,
- 27:39Speaker 4: what kind of budget do you have? We work out
- 27:41Speaker 4: what that looks like, and I go, all right, Well,
- 27:42Speaker 4: how about we have no spend days versus spend days.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Like one day we might go to a theme park
- 27:47Speaker 4: or a paid tourist attraction, but then I really force
- 27:50Speaker 4: myself for the next day to find a free activity
- 27:53Speaker 4: that we can do. So it might be going for
- 27:55Speaker 4: a walk around the gardens or going to see something
- 27:57Speaker 4: that is a free attraction or a free museum. And
- 28:00Speaker 4: I feel like balancing it out that way is like
- 28:02Speaker 4: have paid days and then non paid days. Obviously there
- 28:05Speaker 4: are things that you're gonna have to pay for like
- 28:06Speaker 4: food and transport around the time, but tourist attractions really
- 28:10Speaker 4: add up. So sometimes by going gee, it's a no
- 28:13Speaker 4: spend day, it can actually be really fun to find
- 28:15Speaker 4: the best free activity that you can do on that.
- 28:18Speaker 2: They're always the best days, honestly, right.
- 28:21Speaker 4: I feel like every time I've had a really stellar
- 28:24Speaker 4: day while traveling, it's usually been some kind of free activity.
- 28:28Speaker 4: My other free hot tip apologies are going a bit
- 28:31Speaker 4: roque here. Free walking tours.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Yes, they're so.
- 28:34Speaker 4: Free walking tours are so good. I usually do want
- 28:38Speaker 4: every new country that I go to because usually the
- 28:41Speaker 4: people running them usually if you've been on a walking
- 28:44Speaker 4: tour before, ye, yeah, so usually a little bit of
- 28:46Speaker 4: an eccentric, like it takes a special type of person
- 28:49Speaker 4: to want to run consistently a free walking tour in
- 28:52Speaker 4: the town, right, But they know so much stuff, you
- 28:55Speaker 4: get so much history. Yes, you usually tip them because
- 28:58Speaker 4: you're a nice human. You're just gonna not do anything,
- 29:00Speaker 4: or you might buy them a beer at the end.
- 29:02Speaker 4: But I genuinely feel like they put you on the
- 29:05Speaker 4: right foot great free activity while you're traveling.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Yeah, good, cor v D. I like that one. This
- 29:10Speaker 2: is a quick one here. Not sure if you'll have
- 29:12Speaker 2: a take on this, but I added it to the
- 29:14Speaker 2: list without your permission, so let's see how it goes.
- 29:17Speaker 2: So it is buying silly shit when you're on vacation. Yeah,
- 29:21Speaker 2: I feel like we've all been guilty, rue BALI get
- 29:23Speaker 2: a hair braided, We buy a fluorosa wrong. We come
- 29:26Speaker 2: home back to gloomy Melbourne, our hairs braided. We find
- 29:29Speaker 2: that we're not wearing the s wrong as much because
- 29:31Speaker 2: maybe we regret that purchase. I feel like when we travel,
- 29:35Speaker 2: we spend money on silly things that are not useful.
- 29:37Speaker 2: When we're at home, we get carried away.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Look, I would ask you that I'm pretty good at
- 29:42Speaker 4: that because I just don't like silly stuff, Like I
- 29:45Speaker 4: just think about it. When I see an item, I'm like,
- 29:47Speaker 4: I really don't want to have to store that. Okay,
- 29:49Speaker 4: I'm different when it comes to shoes. There was always, always,
- 29:51Speaker 4: always wear my wardrobe for shoes. You know what, I'll
- 29:53Speaker 4: just get a new wardrobe. She'll be right. But I
- 29:55Speaker 4: feel like putting a cap on it is quite helpful.
- 29:58Speaker 4: So going all right? Gee, Like you. Definitely you can
- 30:00Speaker 4: buy something, but what is going to be your souvenir?
- 30:02Speaker 4: You don't have to pick the four, but you might
- 30:04Speaker 4: go or I'm just going to limit myself to like
- 30:06Speaker 4: one thing or two things. I also think something else
- 30:09Speaker 4: that people get carried away with is gifts for people,
- 30:13Speaker 4: Like why do you need to take back a gift
- 30:15Speaker 4: for every single person you've ever met when you're going overseas,
- 30:18Speaker 4: like send them a postcard. Obviously it's about the thought.
- 30:22Speaker 4: So maybe just send them a postcard when you're over
- 30:24Speaker 4: there and cut your losses because not everybody needs a giant,
- 30:28Speaker 4: inflatable statue of the Eiffel Tower, Like, honestly they don't. Well,
- 30:33Speaker 4: and do you know what when people bring it back
- 30:35Speaker 4: for me, I'm like, that's so thoughtful, that's so kind.
- 30:37Speaker 4: But then I'm like, what am I going to do
- 30:39Speaker 4: it with this Eiffel Tower keyring?
- 30:41Speaker 1: Yet?
- 30:42Speaker 4: But what am I going to do with it? Am
- 30:43Speaker 4: I going to put it on my cas? Probably not?
- 30:45Speaker 4: Let's be honest, it's really annoyingly shaped. I'm not going
- 30:47Speaker 4: to use it.
- 30:48Speaker 2: It is painful. What about the yolo attitude that kind
- 30:51Speaker 2: of ties into that vee? Because I feel like when
- 30:54Speaker 2: we are away, we can have a tendency to really
- 30:57Speaker 2: treat ourselves, but that can be risky and detrimental.
- 30:59Speaker 4: To It can be really detrimental, and it can be
- 31:02Speaker 4: detrimental to the overall holiday budget, but also for who
- 31:05Speaker 4: you're coming home to, which is future you. So I
- 31:08Speaker 4: think making sure that you stick to a really clean
- 31:10Speaker 4: and clear, solid budget is a really good idea. Putting
- 31:14Speaker 4: yourself in a good financial position is literally always sexy.
- 31:17Speaker 4: But also understand yourself and your values before you go
- 31:21Speaker 4: on holiday. Are you a yollow kind of gal or
- 31:23Speaker 4: are you Georgia King and you're super frugal? Like do
- 31:26Speaker 4: you know what I mean?
- 31:26Speaker 2: Like?
- 31:27Speaker 4: Which one are you? And if you are a little
- 31:29Speaker 4: bit more yollow, build some yollow into your budget. Yeah,
- 31:32Speaker 4: make sure it's there, but then also use it at discretion.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Maybe go all right, well i'm a bit yellow. Maybe
- 31:39Speaker 4: i'll go three paid activities while we're on this trip,
- 31:42Speaker 4: and I'll do three, you know, or more free activities.
- 31:46Speaker 4: I think there's something really liberating when you go all right,
- 31:48Speaker 4: I'm just going to dig it up this way, because
- 31:50Speaker 4: instead of going and googling top ten attractions, which usually
- 31:55Speaker 4: comes up with a marketing page of the top ten
- 31:57Speaker 4: paid attractions in that location. You go all right, top
- 32:01Speaker 4: ten free activities in this location, and I promise it
- 32:04Speaker 4: is not going to make your holiday worse. In fact,
- 32:06Speaker 4: some of my best times have been having picnics in
- 32:10Speaker 4: random parks while doing our own self guided walking tour
- 32:13Speaker 4: around London. I think it's really interesting as well, because
- 32:17Speaker 4: I think a lot of people are like, oh my gosh,
- 32:18Speaker 4: did you go do this museum and this? I'm like no,
- 32:20Speaker 4: but you know what we did. We went to Marks
- 32:22Speaker 4: and Spencer and we got that really cheap five pound lunch.
- 32:25Speaker 4: We put it in our little backpacks. We hired those
- 32:28Speaker 4: lime scooters, got around the city, stopped for a random
- 32:32Speaker 4: beer in a random location at a pub that was
- 32:34Speaker 4: very London. When I found a park and had lunch,
- 32:36Speaker 4: one of my favorite days and it didn't cost much
- 32:40Speaker 4: at all. It's just about planning it, because I do
- 32:43Speaker 4: find it really hard when I travel just to wake
- 32:45Speaker 4: up and be like, oh, what do you want to
- 32:46Speaker 4: do today Georgia? Usually that ends up being a paid
- 32:49Speaker 4: activity because you just don't know what else to do, right,
- 32:51Speaker 4: and it's easy to throw money at problems.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's really true. And also I feel like there's
- 32:55Speaker 2: kind of a pressure when you're in you know, I
- 32:58Speaker 2: mean Paris is a bad example because of it. We
- 33:00Speaker 2: all want to see the Eiffel Tower, but you do
- 33:02Speaker 2: get sucked into doing those tourist attractions when it's like,
- 33:05Speaker 2: exactly as you just said, the best days are the
- 33:08Speaker 2: ones where you have no plans and you're seeing the
- 33:10Speaker 2: city for what it is and really absorbing that genuine culture.
- 33:14Speaker 2: That is a very good tip from you.
- 33:15Speaker 4: There v also gammify it. I know that sounds really lame,
- 33:19Speaker 4: but we picked one thing that was inexpensive that we
- 33:22Speaker 4: were going to search out in the city when we
- 33:24Speaker 4: were there. So example you used in Paris as was croissants.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Obviously that's not the most original idea, but literally we
- 33:32Speaker 4: had this game of being like can we find the
- 33:35Speaker 4: best croissant in Paris? So each day as we were
- 33:39Speaker 4: going around, like it's not an expensive addition, but we
- 33:42Speaker 4: were like, all right, for brunch or for lunch or
- 33:44Speaker 4: whatever we're going to do, we're gonna find croissants. And
- 33:46Speaker 4: as much as it wasn't you know, super high fine dining,
- 33:49Speaker 4: it's not what we wanted. Anyway, we were like looking
- 33:51Speaker 4: up random bakeries and running around the back streets of
- 33:54Speaker 4: Paris trying to find these bakeries that had really good
- 33:56Speaker 4: reviews and it was the best fun. But I think
- 34:00Speaker 4: finding something in a location and going do you know what,
- 34:02Speaker 4: We're going to find the best sankria, or we're going
- 34:04Speaker 4: to find the best pea, or we're going to do
- 34:06Speaker 4: I mean, find something local. And I mean that's another
- 34:08Speaker 4: foodie tip as well. Eat the local cuisine. It's going
- 34:12Speaker 4: to be far cheaper than eating something that is more international.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Tell me more about your experiences with food VD and
- 34:20Speaker 2: saving in that way, because that's obviously something that can
- 34:22Speaker 2: get out of hand. Do you have any tips with
- 34:25Speaker 2: saving when it comes to food.
- 34:26Speaker 4: I have so many food tips like food alright, alright, sorry, sorry, sorry,
- 34:31Speaker 4: So when it comes to food, obviously, don't get sucked
- 34:35Speaker 4: into buying food at the tourist traps lack. I know
- 34:39Speaker 4: that it's fun. And this is going to sound a
- 34:41Speaker 4: little bit hypocritical because Jess and I had a game
- 34:44Speaker 4: when we were it was an expensive game that we
- 34:46Speaker 4: were willing to play while we were at Disneyland, and
- 34:49Speaker 4: that was to eat as many things that were shaped
- 34:50Speaker 4: like Mickey as possible. Jess recorded every single one of
- 34:54Speaker 4: them head over to her teknock and more trippy, piky
- 34:56Speaker 4: shaped things. But that's not a good idea because ninety
- 34:59Speaker 4: percent of the stuff take like trash. I just wish
- 35:02Speaker 4: I had packed my own lunch, because then I would
- 35:04Speaker 4: have been one incomplete control of the budget side of it.
- 35:06Speaker 4: But two, I could have just picked stuff I actually
- 35:08Speaker 4: wanted to eat. So I don't actually want to eat
- 35:11Speaker 4: a hot dog. I don't want that. I don't want
- 35:13Speaker 4: to spend twelve dollars American on a hot dog at Disneyland.
- 35:17Speaker 4: I want to take my lunch. It's not that hard.
- 35:20Speaker 4: Most people carry backpacks anyway, and so from my perspective,
- 35:23Speaker 4: taking lunch is very sexy. But the other thing is,
- 35:27Speaker 4: I think this is a can entitled. Everyone's going to
- 35:30Speaker 4: have their own opinion, and I know they do because
- 35:32Speaker 4: they jumped down my throat on my Instagram when I
- 35:34Speaker 4: posted about this. Because apparently one of life's greatest luxuries
- 35:38Speaker 4: is the buffet breakfast at a hotel.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Oh, yes it is.
- 35:40Speaker 4: It is, all right, So maybe we're on the same page.
- 35:44Speaker 4: I think we should be skipping that. I don't want
- 35:45Speaker 4: to pay for breakfast at my hotel. Every time I've
- 35:49Speaker 4: ever been down to the buffet breakfast, I have two
- 35:51Speaker 4: slices of toast. I'm full. I go and get a
- 35:53Speaker 4: random plate with the tiny pancakes. Some of them are tella.
- 35:56Speaker 4: I might eat some of the fruit, but like, I'm
- 35:58Speaker 4: definitely not getting for money by any stretch of the imagination.
- 36:03Speaker 4: So what I do when I land at a specific
- 36:05Speaker 4: location one I pre check with my hotel. This is
- 36:08Speaker 4: so lame and makes me sound like such a nerd.
- 36:11Speaker 4: So true, though, I make sure that my hotel or
- 36:14Speaker 4: wherever I'm staying. I say, can you please make sure
- 36:16Speaker 4: that the mini bar is empty? Like I don't want
- 36:17Speaker 4: anything in the mini bar, not because I'm worried about
- 36:19Speaker 4: spending money, I actually want the storage space. And then
- 36:22Speaker 4: maybe you could always ask them if you want for
- 36:25Speaker 4: a microwave. Most hotels actually have microwaves.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Couple of spares out the back.
- 36:30Speaker 4: They actually do, and they will pop one in your room.
- 36:32Speaker 4: And the reason they have them is usually either people
- 36:35Speaker 4: with back problems that need to heat up heat packs
- 36:37Speaker 4: and babies that travel that need bottles heat it up
- 36:40Speaker 4: if they have formula. So it's interesting, right anyway, asking
- 36:44Speaker 4: for those things can save you a lot of money,
- 36:46Speaker 4: but I always have breakfast at the hotel. I feel
- 36:49Speaker 4: like it's a waste of money to be spending it out.
- 36:51Speaker 4: I would prefer to spend most of my money on
- 36:53Speaker 4: a nicer lunch or a nicer dinner. So when we're
- 36:56Speaker 4: in America recently, I literally went to I think we
- 36:59Speaker 4: went to Target. Do you know Target in America has
- 37:01Speaker 4: a supermarket? Attacks sure, yes, what on earth?
- 37:04Speaker 3: It is?
- 37:04Speaker 4: Elite? Like I bought so much stuff, Like I'm not
- 37:09Speaker 4: a budget tip here because I definitely bought way more
- 37:11Speaker 4: cereals than we needed. But we went to the local Target,
- 37:15Speaker 4: and I bought a whole heap of cereal. I bought
- 37:17Speaker 4: my milk, I bought a whole heap of coffee so
- 37:19Speaker 4: that I could just make my coffee and have my
- 37:21Speaker 4: cereal in the morning. And every morning just and I
- 37:23Speaker 4: just shared breakfast, not in I would love to stay
- 37:26Speaker 4: in bed, but we weren't in the same bed or
- 37:28Speaker 4: sat on the balcony and had breakfast, And to be honest,
- 37:30Speaker 4: it was a really nice way to gently start the
- 37:33Speaker 4: day and plan what we're planning on doing together without
- 37:36Speaker 4: having to race down to breakfast or whatever.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:39Speaker 4: But also it was really budget friendly. I mean a
- 37:41Speaker 4: box of cereal and a bottle of oat milk ten
- 37:43Speaker 4: out of ten.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Nice.
- 37:45Speaker 4: I know it's lame, but everywhere we've been I've been like, oh,
- 37:47Speaker 4: can we do this? Only because like I actually prefer it.
- 37:50Speaker 4: I'm angry in the morning, skies, I don't want to
- 37:52Speaker 4: be searching for breakfast. I have my mid morning croissant
- 37:55Speaker 4: to worry. I'm not going to miss out on the culture. Yes,
- 37:57Speaker 4: I definitely need to eat a solid first. It means
- 38:01Speaker 4: I'll eat less during the day, It'll be cheaper, and
- 38:03Speaker 4: I can prioritize my food budget to things that actually
- 38:06Speaker 4: matter to me.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Brilliant. Love that. But that takes us to my final
- 38:10Speaker 2: question for the day. From your perspective as a finance wizard,
- 38:16Speaker 2: would you say that it would be a good idea
- 38:19Speaker 2: to have a little bit of a buffer in our
- 38:20Speaker 2: budget for shall we say, like emergency moments? So like
- 38:24Speaker 2: when you definitely, I'm going to say yes, okay, okay,
- 38:27Speaker 2: tell me more about that. How much how much it
- 38:29Speaker 2: be in that part of our budget? Like what does
- 38:32Speaker 2: that look like?
- 38:32Speaker 4: Honestly, I'd add a good extra ten to fifteen percent
- 38:35Speaker 4: on top of your holiday budget doesn't mean you'll spend
- 38:38Speaker 4: it might go into savings account when you get home,
- 38:40Speaker 4: but you always want to feel a little bit more comfortable.
- 38:43Speaker 4: There is nothing worse than going on holiday and being like,
- 38:46Speaker 4: oh my gosh, I didn't realize that coffee would cost xyz. Yes,
- 38:49Speaker 4: can't research every single aspect of your experience. Yeah, you
- 38:53Speaker 4: can organize and prebook hotels in accommodation and all of
- 38:56Speaker 4: your transfers, and maybe you can even book like all
- 38:58Speaker 4: of the activities and tickets that you might need, but
- 39:02Speaker 4: you can't really budget appropriately for food, and who knows,
- 39:06Speaker 4: Like you might be with a friend that's like, oh,
- 39:07Speaker 4: let's stop at this little cafe. You both stop because
- 39:10Speaker 4: you're really excited and new real it's really expensive. But
- 39:13Speaker 4: you also don't want to go somewhere else because you
- 39:15Speaker 4: don't want to ruin the vibe at the moment, or
- 39:17Speaker 4: maybe you just can't be bothered finding somewhere else because
- 39:19Speaker 4: you've been walking around Paris and already done twenty three
- 39:22Speaker 4: thousand steps that day. Yes, so I feel like having
- 39:25Speaker 4: a little bit of a buffer gives you a little
- 39:28Speaker 4: bit more peace of mind and enables you to properly
- 39:30Speaker 4: enjoy your holiday. Doesn't mean we have to spend that money.
- 39:33Speaker 4: In fact, the best thing about a holiday, if you
- 39:36Speaker 4: have one, is coming home with money. If you've got it.
- 39:38Speaker 4: We love Yeah, we love that.
- 39:40Speaker 2: I think that is all we have time for today.
- 39:42Speaker 2: But the moral of the story is get organized, plan ahead,
- 39:45Speaker 2: don't buy silly florosa wrongs.
- 39:48Speaker 4: If you wrote down don't buy dumb shit, why didn't
- 39:50Speaker 4: you say that?
- 39:51Speaker 2: Because this is a PG rated popka notorial to mine.
- 39:54Speaker 2: If you lose a little bit of money along the way,
- 39:56Speaker 2: don't worry, have fun.
- 39:57Speaker 4: That was just stay reshec did sace day. And you
- 40:00Speaker 4: know what we're going to do this week. I want
- 40:01Speaker 4: to put a thread in the Facebook group about all
- 40:04Speaker 4: your hot travel tips, so head to there and share
- 40:06Speaker 4: them with me, because you can never be too prepared
- 40:08Speaker 4: for holiday. Honestly, a little bit of holiday dreamings exactly.
- 40:12Speaker 4: All right, We're done here, Georgia King, see you on Friday, guys.
