- 0:01Welcome back to the Body Recomposition Revolution.
- 0:05Today's episode is just a little short snippet.
- 0:09OK, so this is a little different.
- 0:10Ladies, I'm going to forewarn you, this is not your normal
- 0:13long length episode. This episode is an excerpt from
- 0:16an audio book I was listening to during my workout today and I
- 0:20just felt. I needed to share it.
- 0:21I needed to share it. I know it's going to speak to
- 0:23you. Especially given all the
- 0:24feedback I received last week about the Goldilocks rule and
- 0:28how you can look like those people you see on Instagram if
- 0:31you just take it step by step, consistently, day by day, doing
- 0:34all the little boring tasks and tolerating the boredom.
- 0:37Embracing the boredom, staying within your range of ability.
- 0:41I heard this excerpt randomly when I was listening to an audio
- 0:44book called the seven Habits of highly effective people, right?
- 0:48And I went, Oh my gosh, that does such a nice job
- 0:51articulating a how muscle growth works and B, tenacity, grit.
- 0:56It all kind of works the same. So tune in just a couple minute
- 1:00clip. Please listen ladies.
- 1:03I was in a gym one time with a friend of mine who has a PhD in
- 1:06exercise Physiology. He was focusing on building
- 1:09strength. He asked me to spot him while he
- 1:13did some bench presses and told me at a certain point he'd asked
- 1:16me to take the weight. But don't take it until I tell
- 1:19you, he said firmly. So I watched and waited and
- 1:23prepared to take the weight. The weight went up and down, up
- 1:26and down, and I could see it begin to get harder, but he kept
- 1:30going. He would start to push it up,
- 1:32and I'd think there's no way he's going to make it, but he'd
- 1:37make it. Then he'd slowly bring it back
- 1:39down and start back up again. Up and down, up and down.
- 1:45Finally, as I looked at his face, straining with the effort,
- 1:48his blood vessels practically jumping out of his skin, I
- 1:51thought, this is going to fall and collapse his chest.
- 1:55Maybe I should take the weight. Maybe he's lost control and
- 1:58doesn't even know what he's doing.
- 2:01But he'd get it safely down. Then he'd start back up again.
- 2:04I couldn't believe it when he finally told me to take the
- 2:07weight. I said, why did you wait so
- 2:10long? Almost all of the benefit of the
- 2:13exercise comes at the very end. Steven, I'm trying to build
- 2:17strength, and that doesn't happen until the muscle fiber
- 2:21ruptures and the nerve fiber registers the pain.
- 2:26Then nature overcompensates and within 48 hours the fiber is
- 2:31made stronger. I could see his point.
- 2:34It's the same principle that works with emotional muscles as
- 2:38well, such as patience. When you exercise your patience
- 2:42beyond your past limits, the emotional fiber is broken.
- 2:47Nature overcompensates, and next time the fiber is stronger.
- 2:53Now my friend wanted to build muscular strength and he knew
- 2:56how to do it. But not all of us need to
- 2:59develop that kind of strength to be effective.
- 3:02No pain, no gain has validity in some circumstances, but it is
- 3:06not the essence of an effective exercise program.
- 3:10The essence of renewing the physical dimension is to sharpen
- 3:13the saw, to exercise our bodies on a regular basis in a way that
- 3:17will preserve and enhance our capacity to work and adapt and
- 3:21enjoy. And we need to be wise in
- 3:24developing an exercise program. There's a tendency, especially
- 3:28if you haven't been exercising at all, to overdo, and that can
- 3:33create unnecessary pain, even injury, even permanent damage.
- 3:38It's best to start slowly. Oh my gosh, right.
- 3:42Like I was listening to it because I just was.
- 3:46I like to listen to audiobooks while I work out sometimes.
- 3:48And it spoke to me on so many levels because it did a great
- 3:53job illustrating how to build strength.
- 3:55I mean, right there in a nutshell, bum.
- 3:57But also it did a really nice job explaining your tenacity,
- 4:02your mental, how will you have to build mental toughness and by
- 4:07doing hard things, that's how you build it.
- 4:11You have to experience pain in order to overcome it and become
- 4:15stronger. Where then the next time you
- 4:17perform whatever you're performing, be it a workout or
- 4:20be it an interaction with somebody or just a painful
- 4:24situation in general, you have to experience pain in order to
- 4:28get stronger and face it better the next time.
- 4:31So the next time that man that he was talking about in his
- 4:34story goes to lift that weight, it's going to be a little bit
- 4:37easier because his muscle fibers were torn.
- 4:39They rebuilt even stronger because of the pain he
- 4:42experienced last time. And I really love how he tied it
- 4:45into the emotional component. We have to go through hard
- 4:49things in order to develop tenacity, in order to develop
- 4:52grit. You have to go through hard
- 4:55things and experience pain and in order to overcome it and get
- 4:59stronger. I know it sounds cliche, but for
- 5:01some reason when I was listening to it, it was like, yes, duh.
- 5:05And I also like how he talked about starting small, like how
- 5:09people will overdo it. They will get really excited
- 5:12and, and just go way above and beyond and and then they end up
- 5:15injuring themselves or burning out.
- 5:17That is exactly what we talked about.
- 5:19I think it was last week when I said people who are successful
- 5:23no matter what it is, people who are doing the things you want to
- 5:26do and they're doing it so well and you might have envy over
- 5:29that success. They're not any different than
- 5:31you. They just take it step by step,
- 5:34day by day, consistently. They do all the little things
- 5:38consistently on repeat and they stay within that range of
- 5:41ability. They do not take it to extremes,
- 5:44which mean I said guilty many times.
- 5:46They don't take it to extremes, they take it step by step, day
- 5:50by day. I have learned this many times
- 5:53in my life the hard way. And I've learned to reproduce
- 5:55that same habit in my everyday life when it comes to a lot of
- 5:59things. But definitely my fitness and
- 6:00nutrition. I really take it step by step,
- 6:03day by day, consistently trying to get a little bit stronger, a
- 6:06little bit better every single day.
- 6:10So thank you for listening to that little excerpt.
- 6:11I know it's kind of strange, but I just, I felt the need to share
- 6:15it. I felt like it might speak to
- 6:16somebody today. Some episodes I put out receive
- 6:20a little bit more feedback and that last episode I did on You
- 6:26Can look like this too at 35, you know what you need to do to
- 6:28be successful or whatever. I had titled it and the whole
- 6:31premise was just taking it step by step.
- 6:34The Goldilocks rule, you know exactly what I was just talking
- 6:36about. That episode in particular
- 6:38received a lot of positive feedback from women who were
- 6:41like, Oh my gosh, it finally clicked with me.
- 6:43That resonates with me. Yes, I'm always looking for
- 6:46different stimulations and jumping from task to task and
- 6:48not staying with the thing, not doing all the hard things you
- 6:52need to do consistently to see actual growth.
- 6:56So thank you again for listening to that little excerpt and
- 6:59you'll be hearing from me again this week for my regular length
- 7:02episode. Talk to you soon.
