- 0:00Hello and welcome, Soul Tribe, my family.
- 0:06Thank you so much for tuning in to Peace and the Pod.
- 0:10I'm Loretta. And for those that are returning
- 0:13listeners, thank you so much for returning and joining us today.
- 0:17And for any new listeners, welcome and thank you for being
- 0:20here. Hey, hey, Soul Tribe, welcome
- 0:25back to Peace and the Pod. So lately I've been focusing on
- 0:31balancing my chakras, specifically my heart chakra,
- 0:36and just kind of opening it up a little bit so I can feel a
- 0:42little more balanced and grounded from the love the heart
- 0:49perspective. So I'm going to share a little
- 0:52bit about my personal life, a little more about my personal
- 0:57life. And most of you, because you
- 1:03don't know me personally and as a close friend, don't know that
- 1:08I lived in Puerto Rico for 8 1/2 years prior to me moving to
- 1:15where I am now. And I had a wonderful time
- 1:19there. It was great.
- 1:22I did eventually move because of my military job and me wanting
- 1:26career progression and and just seeking more in my career and I
- 1:33wanted to be a little closer to my family.
- 1:36So when I first moved to Puerto Rico, I didn't know anyone.
- 1:47I didn't know a single soul on that island.
- 1:51And it was scary. I think I was in my mid 20s.
- 2:00I was probably like 2324, but I didn't know anyone there.
- 2:08I, I, I, it was a little scary and, but I was more curious of
- 2:17how things were there. I'm a very curious minded
- 2:24individual and I get very intrigued by other cultures,
- 2:29languages, food places. And I just wanted to go and see.
- 2:36So I, I, I mean, at that time I was in another relationship and
- 2:42I'll go into a little more detail about that pretty soon.
- 2:47And I moved there initially because that person had gotten
- 2:53the job there. So I was like, OK, I'll transfer
- 2:57from the Houston Air Guard to the Puerto Rican Air Guard.
- 3:04And I did. So I ended up getting there
- 3:06first and I didn't know my landlord because everyone that I
- 3:14I had spoken to were all via e-mail at the time, a little
- 3:18phone but not I've never seen what they look like.
- 3:23So when I get I got there, my landlord knew that I didn't have
- 3:28any furniture with me. So because I didn't have any
- 3:32furniture and the apartment which was extremely small, it
- 3:37was like so small that I had to step outside to like clear my
- 3:45mind that like it was, it was a tiny place.
- 3:48It was cute. I loved it though.
- 3:50I had some fun at that apartment, but it was just super
- 3:54small. But it was unfurnished.
- 3:56All I had was an air mattress in one suitcase with my military
- 4:00uniforms and a couple shorts, dresses and you know, tank tops,
- 4:07beach stuff. So I didn't have a lot with me,
- 4:11but I planned on buying furniture and stuff when I got
- 4:14there. So anyways, when I I finally
- 4:18arrived and this was December 2006, I want to say.
- 4:24So I had showed up during the festive times and I once again,
- 4:29I don't, I didn't know the culture back then.
- 4:32So I get there and my landlord was like, well, you don't have
- 4:37any furniture. There's no bed down there
- 4:39because the apartment was, it was like a three level house,
- 4:42but the apartment was on the the bottom level.
- 4:45And she was like, since you don't have any furniture, why
- 4:51don't you stay in my daughter's room up here with me.
- 4:55And that way you're not spending the holidays by yourself.
- 4:59And once you get a bed and some furniture, then then move
- 5:05downstairs. But I was, I mean, I didn't know
- 5:09her. So I was a little hesitant.
- 5:11But then I'm like, well, she's right.
- 5:12I am here by myself. I don't know anyone.
- 5:15It would be kind of sad to spend Christmas by myself.
- 5:19I was excited to be there. But then like hearing someone
- 5:22say, oh, you're going to spend the holidays alone.
- 5:24It was just like, yeah, she's she's right.
- 5:26So I agreed to stay in her daughter's room.
- 5:28And her daughter was a flight attendant for one of the
- 5:34airlines, so she was almost never there.
- 5:37So I ended up spending the holidays with her.
- 5:40And on the island, once Thanksgiving starts, you're
- 5:47pretty much in holiday season all the way until mid January
- 5:57because not only do they celebrate Thanksgiving and
- 6:02Christmas, they celebrate 3 Kings and that is January 6th.
- 6:09So imagine how long all the festivities, the partying and
- 6:16and eating and and and hanging out is going on during that time
- 6:19frame. Which I didn't know.
- 6:21So I did get my transfer and all of that completed and, and did
- 6:26my enlistment when I got to the island.
- 6:30But I just didn't know that things would not like really
- 6:34nothing was going to happen. So there was some days, some
- 6:37annual training days that I needed to make up and I couldn't
- 6:41do any of that stuff because all of the holidays were happening.
- 6:43So anyways, I was staying with my landlord from mid-december
- 6:52all the way to mid January. And during that time frame, you
- 6:57know, she was like a mom to me. She was super friendly.
- 7:00She taught me a lot of recipes and showed me how to make the
- 7:04dishes, allowed me to help her make the dishes and gave me some
- 7:08like tips on cooking because at that time I wasn't really like
- 7:11cooking cooking. I was still like learning how to
- 7:13cook. So I learned a lot staying with
- 7:18her, but I just felt like a little a little overwhelmed by
- 7:24the hospitality from her because that woman did not know me but
- 7:29yet opened her doors for me. And it was just like a beautiful
- 7:35feeling. And you know, they say Southern
- 7:37hospitality is it, but I'm from Texas and I have never in my
- 7:42entire life living in Texas felt that kind of hospitality.
- 7:45I'll be honest with you, never felt that kind of hospitality.
- 7:49So anyways, eventually I do go ahead and tell her like, hey,
- 7:53I'm just going to go ahead and go downstairs after a couple
- 7:57months and I went ahead and and went downstairs, but she knew I
- 8:02didn't have ATV. She had cable already like with
- 8:06included with the apartment, but she knew I didn't have ATV.
- 8:09So she brought her daughter's TV down so that I could at least
- 8:13watch TV while I was there, but just super, super generous, kind
- 8:22and warm hearted individual. And I would never forget that.
- 8:26That was like my first experience on the island and it,
- 8:32it actually let me feel that everything was going to be OK
- 8:37while I was there. So anyways, Fast forward and
- 8:43eventually the person that I was with makes it to the island and
- 8:48we had a bad falling out. Like bad.
- 8:51And he's not Puerto Rican, but we had a bad falling out.
- 8:58The relationship ended. It was pretty traumatic.
- 9:05I was working on the air base at the time and we had like a, a
- 9:14very long training that was going on that was crossing over
- 9:18through the weekend. And I ended up not being able to
- 9:21finish the training because of the situation that happened.
- 9:25And I talked to some supervisors and, and eventually, you know,
- 9:35got an understanding of me not attending for a while.
- 9:38So eventually I get all that that cleared up and I, I
- 9:42returned back to work. And keep in mind I'm new to the
- 9:48unit, so I don't know anyone there.
- 9:52I'm not really sure how they would behave to me toward me
- 9:56because I'm an outsider, but I went in open minded.
- 10:01I, you know, I, I took the chance to go to another place
- 10:05that I've never been before that where I knew, I didn't know
- 10:07anyone and I wanted to know more people.
- 10:12I wanted to expand my circle. So I was very open to meeting
- 10:19all these new people and, and, and seeing who could be a
- 10:23potential friend or not. So anyways, I was a little quiet
- 10:31because I'm a very observant person.
- 10:34So while I was there at work, I was just more kind of quiet
- 10:37just, you know, they tell me to work on something or do this, do
- 10:41that without I would just take care of it and I would just be
- 10:43pretty much in my little cubicle area.
- 10:46But I was very quiet because I like to kind of get a feel and
- 10:49see how people are before I just start like trying to be all
- 10:52friendly because you know, not everybody you could trust.
- 10:56So anyways, I I there was some 2 younger females a few years
- 11:02younger than me that started being friendly.
- 11:05So I was so I became friends with them and I wasn't really
- 11:11going out or doing anything because I didn't know where to
- 11:14go and what to do. But I was a little quiet because
- 11:20of after the incident that had happened.
- 11:23I didn't know like if the person that I had spoke to, like shared
- 11:28all of that with everybody and I didn't know like what they were
- 11:35thinking. So I was a little standoffish
- 11:37when I did return back to work. And then my now bestie, Vicki,
- 11:46love you, girl. She was the first person to
- 11:49reach out to me after that happened.
- 11:52And she basically was just like, hey, I know you don't like know
- 11:56anybody here. You probably don't have like a
- 11:59lot of friends yet. But if you're wanting to like,
- 12:03take your mind off of everything and, you know, go get a drink or
- 12:06something, we could go hang out. And I'm like, all right.
- 12:10And the crazy thing is she never asked me about what happened.
- 12:16She just pretty much was like, hey, you're here alone, you need
- 12:22a friend and I'm going to be there for you.
- 12:27So we did and we ended up hanging out, me, her and the the
- 12:31other lady. And, and that's how the
- 12:35friendship really started developing between Vicki and I.
- 12:39And eventually I did tell her what happened.
- 12:43Not that night, but sometime down the line, I did a guy go
- 12:47into detail and tell her everything that happened and how
- 12:50like everything was kind of drawn out and I, you know, still
- 12:54had some things to work out and whatever.
- 12:56But I, I, I saw her different from most of the people that I
- 13:02experienced because most people, when you go through something,
- 13:04most people just want to know what you went through.
- 13:07They don't, they don't really care about you and how you feel
- 13:11and, and what's going on with you.
- 13:12It's more like the, the gossip, the drama, like the, the juicy
- 13:16details. No one like it's very rare that
- 13:19you find people who actually care about you and how you're
- 13:22pulling through in certain situations.
- 13:24So to have someone that had no idea who I was, didn't, didn't
- 13:28know anything about my background or anything, just,
- 13:32you know, make herself available so that I don't feel lonely on
- 13:37the island. And I, I will never forget that
- 13:43moment when she, she invited me out.
- 13:47You know, I get a little emotional about talk when I talk
- 13:51about that because I mean it, it touches my heart.
- 13:58There are not a lot of good people that would do something
- 14:02like that. But my time in Puerto Rico has
- 14:07been just an amazing experience. And this was all within the
- 14:13first six months or so of me moving there, that I'm already
- 14:17experiencing this kind of love and, and kindness and
- 14:20hospitality from individuals. And I was just blown away of how
- 14:27carrying people are there. And I did eventually start
- 14:35making some more friends as I was starting to learn people and
- 14:40starting to learn a little bit more about the language and, and
- 14:43the culture and, and places that too frequent.
- 14:48Once I started getting out a little bit more and exploring
- 14:53the different areas on base to know the different sections,
- 15:01groups and, and personnel, that's when I was able to, to
- 15:06build even more friendships. But, and it wasn't all just on
- 15:11base. On base I did, I mean, I, I had
- 15:14a few different roles that I, I worked in.
- 15:19So of course I met people in each of those squadrons, but it
- 15:27was, I don't know, the bonds that I built with the people
- 15:34that I know on that island is I don't know if there's even
- 15:43enough words to describe the friendship, the level of love
- 15:48and and kindness that's there. Now we'll say this, they are not
- 15:56kind driving there. There is a bit of aggression,
- 16:02but if they see that, see you and know you, they'll let you
- 16:05in, they'll let you over. But other than that, besides the
- 16:12driving side of things, I think there are beautiful people there
- 16:17inside and out that are absolutely the most kind,
- 16:23generous and loving folks that I've ever experienced.
- 16:26And the level of hospitality is just really hard to put into
- 16:30words because it, it almost takes your breath away of how
- 16:36generous and kind those individuals are.
- 16:41So I've made a lot of long lasting friendships.
- 16:45I, I truly consider Puerto Rico to be family and home.
- 16:52I loved living there. And if it wasn't for my job and
- 16:59me wanting to progress and learn more, do more, see more, I would
- 17:08not have left. I mean, and I did want to get
- 17:12closer to my family because I, it did cost quite a bit to fly
- 17:18in and out several times a year to go spend time with my family.
- 17:22So I wanted to just kind of cut costs and, and find a better
- 17:29position somewhere. I just kind of felt like I
- 17:32outgrew, like I outgrew my positions and there was nowhere
- 17:37else for me to level up. And that was the reason I left.
- 17:40And it was hard leaving there because I, I love that place.
- 17:45I love the people, I love the food, the culture, I love the
- 17:49beaches, I love everything about the island.
- 17:52And I am sad that I'm not there anymore.
- 17:54But I know that I had to move on because that's just part of the
- 18:01journey. But I just wanted to share that
- 18:10if you have not experienced Puerto Rico, you are truly,
- 18:16truly missing out on an amazing opportunity to meet some of the
- 18:21most loving, caring, kind, and no one can compare hospitality
- 18:31individuals that I've ever experienced in my entire life.
- 18:38They're very accepting of anyone who comes to visit and they make
- 18:43you feel like you're home, they make you feel like you're
- 18:47family. And it is just a beautiful,
- 18:50beautiful feeling when you experience that.
- 18:57And I honestly, I have not been anywhere else that that that
- 18:59hasn't given me that type of feeling.
- 19:03But yeah, I just wanted to share a little bit about me and about
- 19:09love and the feeling of feeling loved and expressing love.
- 19:19And I feel like Puerto Rico. They're #1 go check out the
- 19:27island. Experience the beautiful people,
- 19:30beautiful beaches, beautiful culture.
- 19:36Thanks to everyone on the island who made me feel like family and
- 19:41I will always consider Puerto Rico home.
