- 0:14The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 0:17According to Saint John, at that time Jesus went forth with his
- 0:23disciples over the brook sedren, where there was a garden, into
- 0:29which he entered with his disciples.
- 0:32And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place, because
- 0:37Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples.
- 0:42Judas therefore, having received a band of soldiers and servants
- 0:46from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with
- 0:51lanterns and torches, and weapons.
- 0:56Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon
- 0:59him, went forth and said to them, Whom seek ye?
- 1:04They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth.
- 1:08Jesus saith to them, I am He. And Judas also, who betrayed
- 1:13him, stood with them. As soon, therefore, as He had
- 1:17said to them, I am He, they went backward and fell to the ground
- 1:23again. Therefore He asked them, Whom
- 1:25seek ye? And they said, Jesus of
- 1:29Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you
- 1:33that I am He. If therefore you seek Me, let
- 1:37these go their way, that the word might be fulfilled which He
- 1:41said of them whom thou hast given me.
- 1:45I have not lost anyone. Then Simon Peter, having a
- 1:50sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest, and
- 1:55cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was
- 1:59Malchus. Jesus therefore said to Peter,
- 2:04Put up thy sword into the scabbard, the chalice which my
- 2:08father has given me, Shall I not drink it?
- 2:12Then the band and the tribune and the servants of the Jews
- 2:15took Jesus and bound him, and they led him away to Anna's
- 2:19first, for he was the father-in-law to Caiaphas, who
- 2:24was the high priest of that year.
- 2:27Now Caiaphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews
- 2:33that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
- 2:37And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple, and
- 2:42that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with
- 2:45Jesus into the court of the high priest.
- 2:50But Peter stood at the door without.
- 2:53The other disciple, Therefore, who was known to the high
- 2:56priest, went out and spoke to the portress, and brought in
- 3:00Peter the maid. Therefore that was portress says
- 3:04to Peter, Are not thou also one of this man's disciples?
- 3:10He says, I am not. Now the servants and ministers
- 3:15stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold and warm
- 3:20themselves, and with them was Peter also standing and warming
- 3:25himself. The high priest therefore asked
- 3:28Jesus of his disciples and of his doctrine.
- 3:33Jesus answered him. I have spoken openly to the
- 3:35world. I have always taught in the
- 3:38synagogue and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort, and
- 3:42in secret I have spoken nothing. Why ask this?
- 3:46Thou me ask them who have heard would have spoken unto them.
- 3:51Behold, they know what things I have said.
- 3:53And when he had said these things, one of the servants
- 3:58standing by gave Jesus a blow, saying, Answerst thou the high
- 4:02priest? So Jesus answered him, If I have
- 4:07spoken evil, give testimony of the evil.
- 4:11But if well, why strikest thou me?
- 4:15And Anna sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest, and
- 4:19Simon Peter was standing and warming himself.
- 4:23They said therefore to him, Art not thou also one of his
- 4:27disciples? He denied it and said, I am not
- 4:32one of the servants of the high priest, a kinsman to him whose
- 4:37ear Peter cut off, saith to him, Did I not see thee in the garden
- 4:44with him again? Therefore Peter denied, and
- 4:48immediately the cock crew. Then they led Jesus from
- 4:52Caiaphas to the governor's hall, and it was morning, and they
- 4:56went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but
- 5:01that they might eat. The pash pilot therefore went
- 5:06out to them and said, What accusation bring you against
- 5:09this man? They answered and said to him,
- 5:13If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up
- 5:17to thee. Pilate therefore said to them,
- 5:21Take him you, and judge him according to your law.
- 5:25The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put
- 5:29any man to death, that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled,
- 5:34which he said, signifying what death he should die.
- 5:38Pilate therefore went into the hall again and called Jesus, and
- 5:42said to him, Art thou the king of the Jews?
- 5:46Jesus answered, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others
- 5:51told it thee of me? Pilate answered, Am IA Jew thine
- 5:57own nation, and the chief priests have delivered thee up
- 6:01to me. What hast thou done?
- 6:05Jesus answered, My Kingdom is not of this world.
- 6:09If my Kingdom were of this world, my servants would
- 6:12certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews.
- 6:17But now my Kingdom is not from Hence Pilate therefore said to
- 6:21him, Art thou a Kingdom? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that
- 6:27I am a king. For this was I born, and for
- 6:30this came I into the world, that I should give testimony of the
- 6:34truth. Everyone that is of the truth
- 6:37hears my voice. Pilate saith to him, What is
- 6:42truth? And when he had said this, he
- 6:44went out again to the Jews, and saith to them, I find no cause
- 6:49in him. But you have a custom that I
- 6:52should release 1 unto you at the pash.
- 6:55Will you therefore that I release unto you the king of the
- 6:58Jews? Then cried they all again,
- 7:02saying, Not this man, but Barabbas.
- 7:06Now Barabbas was a robber. Then therefore Pilate took Jesus
- 7:11and scourged him. And the soldiers, platting a
- 7:14crown of thorns, put it upon his head.
- 7:18And they put on him a purple garment.
- 7:21And they came to him, and said, Hail King of the Jews, And they
- 7:25gave him blows. Pilate therefore went forth
- 7:29again, and saith to them, Behold, I bring him forth unto
- 7:33you, that you may know that I find no cause in him.
- 7:38Jesus therefore came forth bearing the crown of thorns in
- 7:41the purple garment, and he sayeth to them, Behold the man.
- 7:48When the chief priests therefore, and the servants had
- 7:50seen him, they cried out, saying, Crucify Him, Crucify
- 7:55Him. I let sayeth to them, Take him
- 7:59you, and crucify Him, for I find no cause in him.
- 8:04The Jews answered him, We have a law, and according the law he
- 8:09ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
- 8:14When Pilate therefore had heard this saying, he feared the more,
- 8:18and he entered into the hall again, And he said to Jesus,
- 8:23Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
- 8:28Pilate therefore saith to him, Speakest thou not to me?
- 8:34Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and I
- 8:38have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou shouldst
- 8:43not have any power against me, unless it were given thee from
- 8:47above. Therefore he that hath delivered
- 8:51me to thee hath the greater sin. And from henceforth Pilate
- 8:56sought to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying,
- 9:01If thou released this man, thou art not Caesar's friend, for
- 9:06whosoever maketh him a king speaketh against Caesar.
- 9:11Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus forth
- 9:15and sat down in the judgment seat, in the place that is
- 9:18called Lithostrotos, and in Hebrew gabasa.
- 9:25And it was the Paraschiv of the Pash about the 6th hour.
- 9:30And he says to the Jews, Behold your King.
- 9:33But they cried out Away with him, away with him, crucify him.
- 9:39Pilate says to them, Shall I crucify your king?
- 9:43The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
- 9:47Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified.
- 9:52They took Jesus and led Him forth, And bearing his cross he
- 9:56went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew
- 10:01Golgotha, where they crucified him, and with him two others,
- 10:07one on each side, and Jesus in the midst.
- 10:11And Pilate wrote a title also, and he put it upon the cross,
- 10:16and the writing was Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.
- 10:22This title, therefore, many of the Jews did read, because the
- 10:27place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city, and it was
- 10:33written in Hebrew and Greek, and in Latin.
- 10:37Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, right, not
- 10:41the king of the Jews, but that he said, I am the king of the
- 10:46Jews. Pilate answered, What I have
- 10:49written, I have written. The soldiers, therefore, when
- 10:53they had crucified him, took his garments, and they made four
- 10:58parts to every soldier apart, and also his coat.
- 11:04Now the coat was, without seeing, woven from the top
- 11:08throughout. They said then one to another,
- 11:12let us not cut it, but let us cast lots for it.
- 11:16Whose it shall be, that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
- 11:20which says, They have parted my garments among them, and upon my
- 11:25vesture they have cast lots. And the soldiers indeed did
- 11:30these things. Now there stood by the cross of
- 11:34Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of
- 11:39Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore had seen
- 11:44his mother and the disciples standing whom He loved, he said
- 11:50to his mother, Woman, Behold thy Son.
- 11:55After that he saith to the disciple, Behold thy mother.
- 12:01And from that hour the disciple took her to his own.
- 12:05Afterwards Jesus, knowing that all things were now
- 12:08accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, I
- 12:13thirst. Now there was a vessel set there
- 12:17full of vinegar, and they putting a sponge full of vinegar
- 12:21about Bishop, put it to his mouth.
- 12:25Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said, It is
- 12:30consummated, and bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.
- 12:49Then the Jews, because it was the Paris, give that the bodies
- 12:54might not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, for that was
- 12:58a great Sabbath day. He sought Pilate, that their
- 13:02legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
- 13:07The soldiers therefore came, and they broke the legs of the 1st
- 13:12and of the other that was crucified with Him.
- 13:15But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that He was
- 13:18already dead, they did not break his legs, but one of the
- 13:23soldiers with the spear opened his side, and immediately there
- 13:27came out blood and water. And he that saw it hath given
- 13:32testimony, and His testimony is true.
- 13:35And He knoweth that He saith true, that you also may believe.
- 13:42For these things were done, that the Scripture might be
- 13:45fulfilled. You shall not break a bone of
- 13:48Him. And again another Scripture
- 13:51says, They shall look on Him whom they pierced.
- 13:56And after these things Joseph of Arimathea, because he was a
- 14:01disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought
- 14:06Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus.
- 14:10And Pilate gave leave. He came therefore, and took away
- 14:13the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus also came, he who
- 14:18at the first came to Jesus by night, bringing a mixture of
- 14:23myrrh and aloes, about an 100 LB weight.
- 14:29They took, therefore the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen
- 14:33cloth with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
- 14:39Now there was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and
- 14:44in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein no man yet had been
- 14:48laid. Therefore, because of the
- 14:51paraschiva of the Jews, they laid Jesus, because the sub
- 14:56occur was nigh at hand.
