Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There are new developments as investigators look into the attack
- 0:03Speaker 1: on board a fly Dubai flight to Tel Aviv that
- 0:06Speaker 1: almost led to a disaster yesterday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
- 0:10Speaker 1: Netanyahu tells Fox News the co-pilot who attacked the captain
- 0:14Speaker 1: and tried to crash the flight appears to have been radicalized.
- 0:18Speaker 2: The attacker, the co-pilot who attacked the captain is now
- 0:23Speaker 2: being interrogated. But here's what we do know. First, we
- 0:27Speaker 2: know that He underwent Islamist radical indoctrination. That appears to
- 0:34Speaker 2: be something we're gathering from the information, his personal information.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Netanyahu gave no further details. The Israeli Prime Minister is
- 0:43Speaker 1: crediting one of the passengers who forced his way into
- 0:46Speaker 1: the cockpit to subdue the attacker as the plane was
- 0:50Speaker 1: plummeting through the sky. Netanyahu says the passenger grabbed the
- 0:54Speaker 1: aircraft's control stick and pulled it up to keep the
- 0:57Speaker 1: jet flying, something he learned from a TV show. Several
- 1:00Speaker 1: other passengers are being celebrated as heroes, including the captain
- 1:04Speaker 1: who managed to unlock the door to the cockpit after
- 1:07Speaker 1: being repeatedly stabbed twice. so others could enter and help.
- 1:12Speaker 1: And the CBC's Tom Perry is in Jerusalem and he's
- 1:14Speaker 1: following the developments here. He joins us now live. So Tom,
- 1:17Speaker 1: some extraordinary acts of courage. Tell us more about what
- 1:20Speaker 1: we're learning about what happened on this flight.
- 1:24Speaker 3: We are hearing some just incredible stories coming off this
- 1:29Speaker 3: flight that must have been just so terrifying for the
- 1:32Speaker 3: people aboard. You're flying anyone who's been on a plane.
- 1:34Speaker 3: You're flying and all of a sudden the plane starts
- 1:37Speaker 3: to shudder. You hear screaming up at the front of
- 1:40Speaker 3: the cockpit. That's got to be terrifying. while just bone-chilling.
- 1:43Speaker 3: And as these people were going through it, again, they
- 1:46Speaker 3: showed these incredible acts of courage. You mentioned the captain
- 1:51Speaker 3: of the flight fighting off the co-pilot who stabbed him
- 1:54Speaker 3: and apparently tried to put the plane into the ground.
- 1:56Speaker 3: You mentioned the man, one of the people who stormed
- 2:00Speaker 3: the cockpit. His name was Yaniv Hayun. He was a plumber.
- 2:04Speaker 3: He seized control. He helped get the co-pilot, the attacker,
- 2:09Speaker 3: out of the cockpit. He seized control of the plane
- 2:13Speaker 3: from something he learned on TV, watching television shows about flight,
- 2:17Speaker 3: pulled the plane into a more controlled position. And luckily
- 2:21Speaker 3: there was a reserve team, a couple of other pilots
- 2:24Speaker 3: on board the plane who were able to take over
- 2:26Speaker 3: and land the plane in Saudi Arabia. So, again, just
- 2:30Speaker 3: some incredible stories of courage coming out of there. You
- 2:34Speaker 3: saw that at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv last night.
- 2:38Speaker 3: When we landed, actually, we saw a fly Dubai aircraft
- 2:41Speaker 3: parked on the tarmac. Not sure if that was the
- 2:45Speaker 3: plane that was brought in to bring the families home.
- 2:47Speaker 3: But you saw scenes last night of families of people
- 2:49Speaker 3: who were aboard that plane Hugging them, embracing them just
- 2:53Speaker 3: in relief, in joy that they survived this ordeal that
- 2:57Speaker 3: could have ended so much worse.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And now, Tom, we also have to be clear here
- 3:02Speaker 1: that there's so much that we don't know. So tell
- 3:04Speaker 1: us a little bit more about what's starting now. And
- 3:06Speaker 1: that's the investigation into what happened here and what exactly
- 3:10Speaker 1: they'll be looking at.
- 3:13Speaker 3: There are still so many questions about how and why
- 3:17Speaker 3: this happened. You heard Benjamin Netanyahu talking about this pilot
- 3:21Speaker 3: undergoing radicalization, but he offered no details on what that means,
- 3:26Speaker 3: when or how that might have happened. Israel's defense minister
- 3:30Speaker 3: called this a jihadist attack, but the fact is, The
- 3:34Speaker 3: investigation is really just getting underway. Benjamin Netanyahu, in an
- 3:37Speaker 3: earlier interview with Fox News, said that Saudi Arabia was investigating,
- 3:41Speaker 3: that the UAE, the United Arab Emirates was investigating, that
- 3:45Speaker 3: Israel might get involved in that investigation as well. And
- 3:49Speaker 3: I think one of the questions they'll be asking, obviously,
- 3:52Speaker 3: why did the attacker launch this attack? How did this
- 3:56Speaker 3: attacker get a weapon onto the plane? Is there, needs
- 4:00Speaker 3: to be more stringent controls about police flight crews getting
- 4:04Speaker 3: aboard a plane. So these are all answers that need
- 4:09Speaker 3: to be found. I think, though, that as we've been saying,
- 4:12Speaker 3: the one thing people do agree on at this point
- 4:14Speaker 3: is that these passengers and particularly the captain of that plane,
- 4:18Speaker 3: they acted together. They showed incredible courage under a very
- 4:22Speaker 3: stressful situation and they really averted disaster.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Tom, thank you for the latest on this. That is
- 4:28Speaker 1: the CBC's Tom Perry in Jerusalem. Well, here is the
- 4:38Speaker 1: scene in India, outside the family home of Captain Smith Machar.
- 4:42Speaker 1: As we just heard from Tom, the flying Dubai pilot
- 4:46Speaker 1: is being celebrated as a national hero. And the CBC's
- 4:49Speaker 1: senior correspondent, Susan Ormiston, is in Mumbai, speaking with his
- 4:53Speaker 1: friends and neighbours.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Well, Mumbai is really bursting with pride today. Captain Smit
- 5:01Speaker 4: Machar is an Indian national. He used to live in
- 5:04Speaker 4: this apartment building until just four years ago. His extended
- 5:07Speaker 4: family lives here. There was quite the scene outside this
- 5:11Speaker 4: apartment block with lots of media and supporters wanting to
- 5:15Speaker 4: speak to neighbors, wanting to really celebrate this man's legacy.
- 5:19Speaker 4: accomplishment as a pilot. And we spoke to one of
- 5:22Speaker 4: his neighbors, they're very close here in the apartment block,
- 5:25Speaker 4: who spoke about the character of Machar.
- 5:28Speaker 5: He's always been very jovial, very kind and very family oriented.
- 5:32Speaker 5: And the kind of bravery that he has shown speaks
- 5:35Speaker 5: volumes of his character. It's a testimony of what he's
- 5:38Speaker 5: been trained for. And sometimes flying us don't do justice
- 5:41Speaker 5: to the experience that a particular pilot may have. And
- 5:44Speaker 5: it's a very proud moment for all of us.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Many people reflecting on the mid-air near catastrophe where the
- 5:51Speaker 4: captain was fending off an apparent stabbing attack by his
- 5:56Speaker 4: co-pilot and somehow in the middle of that he managed
- 5:58Speaker 4: to unlock the cockpit door, send emergency messages and finally
- 6:03Speaker 4: some passengers and crew broke through that door and were
- 6:06Speaker 4: able to really put down the co-pilot and attend to
- 6:11Speaker 4: the injuries of the pilot. We know he is in
- 6:14Speaker 4: a hospital in Saudi Arabia reportedly in stable condition and
- 6:19Speaker 4: today the Prime Minister of India was really celebrating his
- 6:22Speaker 4: heroism saying in the face of gravest danger and despite
- 6:25Speaker 4: being seriously injured he showed immense courage and an unwavering
- 6:29Speaker 4: resolve to protect the lives of others Modi said. Israel's
- 6:33Speaker 4: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also calling him a hero saying
- 6:38Speaker 4: he managed to save 174 lives including many Israeli citizens.
- 6:45Speaker 4: We are waiting for more news about his condition as
- 6:49Speaker 4: the day goes forward. There may be an update later.
- 6:52Speaker 4: We know his wife has gone to Saudi Arabia. They
- 6:55Speaker 4: lived in the Emirates with their two children because he
- 6:59Speaker 4: was a pilot for Fly Dubai. His parents left here
- 7:03Speaker 4: early this morning. neighbor we spoke to drove them partway
- 7:07Speaker 4: to the airport said they were very emotional. I mean
- 7:10Speaker 4: imagine them sitting here all day yesterday knowing their son
- 7:14Speaker 4: was on that flight and they're very anxious to speak
- 7:16Speaker 4: to him post-surgery. We also heard from a local MLA
- 7:20Speaker 4: who of course is saying that his character reveals immense
- 7:25Speaker 4: courage and bravery and here's what he said. He saved
- 7:29Speaker 4: his name, his country's name.
- 7:31Speaker 5: He saved.
- 7:38Speaker 4: He told us that there will be a big celebration
- 7:41Speaker 4: here in Mumbai once the captain is able to travel
- 7:45Speaker 4: back here. Of course, he said it would be a
- 7:47Speaker 4: complicated affair with Many countries involved, India, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates,
- 7:54Speaker 4: and also Israel, as well as his company, Fly Dubai.
- 7:58Speaker 4: But he says it will be a grand moment, and
- 8:00Speaker 4: it's really lifted the spirits of all Indians watching this happen.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Susan Ormiston, CBC News, Mumbai.
