Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're digging into Mike Weinberg's New Sales. Simplified. So Sophie, what made this one stand out to you?
• 0:12
Sophie: Good to be here. New Sales. Simplified. is Mike Weinberg's blunt field manual for prospecting. He says most sellers are dangerously distracted, and this book is the cure.
• 0:25
  Sam: Yeah.
• 0:26
Sam: What struck me first is how blunt he is. There's no complicated methodology. He says the industry has overcomplicated sales.
• 0:35
Sophie: Exactly. The core problem he sees is that most sellers are distracted. They manage accounts, polish decks, and live in their CRM, but they aren't prospecting for new customers.
• 0:46
  Sam: Right.
• 0:47
Sam: So he has this three-part fix called the Prospecting Trinity. The first pillar is the right mindset. The second is the right skillset. And the third is the right toolset.
• 0:59
Sophie: And mindset is the foundation. Without it, no script or software saves you. The real enemy is fear of rejection, and it shows up as procrastination and busywork.
• 1:11
Sam: I pushed back on that at first, because it sounds like blaming the salesperson. Then he flips it into an owner's mentality. You become the CEO of your own territory.
• 1:21
Sophie: That's the shift that makes it empowering. You take ownership of your results, which means you also take control. No more excuses.
• 1:30
Sam: He even tells you to get angry about it. Productive paranoia, he calls it. Be paranoid about your pipeline.
• 1:37
Sophie: Right. That's where he kills the cold calling is dead myth. People still buy from people they trust, and the phone starts that trust.
• 1:46
  Sam: Yeah.
• 1:47
Sam: He reframes cold calling as a service. If you can genuinely help someone, you're not interrupting them. You're bringing them a solution.
• 1:54
Sophie: Then he moves to the skillset. The key tool is the 30-Second Value Proposition. It answers why a prospect should give you their time.
• 2:03
Sam: It can't be a feature list. It has to be customer-centric. Instead of saying we sell cloud software, you say we help cut IT costs by 30 percent.
• 2:13
Sophie: That example makes it click. He's ruthless about not doing a demo dump. The goal of the first call is to diagnose, not pitch.
• 2:22
Sam: He gives you a pain funnel. You start broad, asking what's happening in their business. Then you drill into team impact, cost, and why now.
• 2:31
Sophie: That naturally builds urgency. The prospect starts realizing the true price of the problem while you're just asking questions.
• 2:39
Sam: Exactly. And when objections come up, he calls them buying signals. The prospect is engaged. Then he uses the Feel Felt Found technique to handle the objection without arguing.
• 2:52
Sophie: I love that one. You say, I understand how you feel. Other clients felt the same, but here's what they found. It validates, then flips it.
• 3:02
Sam: He's also big on getting the no. Never chase a phantom for three months. A clear no frees you up to find a real yes.
• 3:10
Sophie: Now the toolset. The phone is still the primary tool, which feels radical today. His voicemail script is short. It gives one business reason and mentions the follow-up email.
• 3:15
  Sam: Right.
• 3:16
Sam: Then he layers in email, LinkedIn, and even direct mail, all part of an integrated prospecting campaign. The point is to create consistent, value-focused touchpoints.
• 3:28
Sophie: The email template is gold too. It needs a short subject line, a reference to a shared connection, and a low-risk call to action like a 15-minute call.
• 3:38
Sam: That's a great way to grow without always chasing new logos. Then he gets into the pipeline, which is the most concrete part for me.
• 3:46
Sophie: He uses a pipeline grid with three columns. The top holds suspects, the middle holds prospects, and the bottom holds commitments. Most people have a leaky bucket because they never refill the top.
• 3:59
Sam: Right. He gives a weekly formula. Ten conversations lead to five prospects, which leads to a couple of closed deals a month. Now you have a daily target.
• 4:09
Sophie: That structure turns anxiety into action. He doesn't let managers off the hook. Their job is coach and commander, not cheerleader.
• 4:18
Sam: He calls for weekly pipeline reviews, asking tough questions. How many conversations did you have? Why is this stale deal still here? That accountability is the glue.
• 4:29
Sophie: Then he gives a 90-day action plan. Define your ideal customer. Craft your value proposition. Build a list of a hundred targets. Then start reaching out daily.
• 4:41
Sam: And the key word is consistency. You can't prospect for two weeks and stop. It has to become a permanent, non-negotiable part of the routine.
• 4:50
Sophie: Yeah, that's the whole message. Sales is simple, but not easy. The magic is in the daily courage to start the conversation.
• 4:59
  Sam: Yeah.
• 5:00
Sam: That's my takeaway. People hide in their CRM with a full dashboard and an empty pipeline. The fix is uncomfortable, and it starts with a phone call.
• 5:10
Sophie: And if you want more, the whole library is on 7minutebooks.com/app. That's over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language, with infographics on many of them. It's two ninety-nine a month, nine ninety-nine a year, or nineteen ninety-nine for lifetime access.
• 5:31
Sophie: The whole book boils down to one idea. Stop hiding in your CRM and start selling. We'll see you in the next one.
