- 0:12Hello Melissa Crook here. Welcome back to the field
- 0:15podcast. Today it's time for another
- 0:17one-on-one empowerment episode with me.
- 0:20Today we are talking about the connection between our mental
- 0:24health, our emotional health, our physical health, our
- 0:27spiritual health, our financial health, our sexual health.
- 0:31All of these components of our health are connected.
- 0:37They are not separate. They all impact each other.
- 0:40They all play out over each other.
- 0:43And it's important that we understand that because this
- 0:46helps us to identify where it is we need to address some things
- 0:52in our lives. These things are clues and I'm
- 0:56very passionate about the fact that emotions and the impact of
- 1:00them are not our body failing us.
- 1:03They're our body sending us warning signals, clues, alarms
- 1:07sometimes. Pay attention.
- 1:10I need some help here. I need you to address this.
- 1:13I want us to be healthy. And so we're going to have a
- 1:16conversation today about this and how you can support yourself
- 1:21well in this and maybe unlearn and relearn some things that
- 1:25you've been told about these connections.
- 1:27Because Western medicine tends to to treat these as separate
- 1:31entities. We're starting to learn more and
- 1:33overtime the connection that exists between them.
- 1:37And then instead of just throwing these different band
- 1:40aids at these separate things, we look at how they're all
- 1:44fitting together and how they're impacting each other and get
- 1:47curious about the why and solving it instead of just
- 1:51putting a Band-Aid on symptoms. And so let's get into this
- 1:55conversation, taking care of these all these spaces in your
- 2:00life. Have you experienced this?
- 2:02And if you think you haven't, I'm going to almost promise you
- 2:06that you have. But we haven't been trained to
- 2:08think about it this way. And so we're going to talk more
- 2:11about that and what it can look like.
- 2:13Does yourself care? Incorporate the physical, the
- 2:17mental, the emotional, the spiritual, the sexual, the
- 2:21financial, because all these different things impact our
- 2:25stress levels, our ability to feel content, ability to feel
- 2:28joy, levels of anxiety, levels of contentment and peace.
- 2:33They're all impacted by this angst and relationships.
- 2:37I mean, there's all of these things move and fit together.
- 2:44There's a conversation that we have in the online course, and
- 2:49if this is an area that you're really struggling in, this is a
- 2:53great investment you can make in yourself.
- 2:56But I'm going to touch on some highlights from that today that
- 2:59are going to hopefully help you wrap your mind around this and
- 3:02identify whether you're really addressing this in a way that's
- 3:06healthy and necessary for you. But we talked about segmentation
- 3:10and that means that separating out and compartmentalizing all
- 3:14these different areas as separate entities rather than
- 3:17the collective activities in our body that they actually are.
- 3:23Segmentation may begin as self protection, but often eventually
- 3:29becomes self suppression. That is a quote from Susan
- 3:34David, who is someone that I follow that I highly recommend.
- 3:39She has a monthly newsletter on emotional agility.
- 3:42She's done a lot of work in this area and I think this quote is
- 3:46powerful and it says it all. Segmentation may begin as self
- 3:49protection, but it often eventually becomes self
- 3:54suppression. And we know if you've been
- 3:58following me at all, that suppressing emotions,
- 4:01suppressing these things that we say we don't have time for or
- 4:05we've been told are inconvenient or we don't want to bother
- 4:08someone else with, they're not going away.
- 4:11They're going to bubble up later in some other most likely
- 4:14unhealthy way. So it's really important that we
- 4:17can get connected with these things and have resources to
- 4:20help us process and move through them so they don't become an
- 4:24ongoing more serious problem. So some more from my friend
- 4:29Susan David. She's not really my friend.
- 4:31Well, she's my, she doesn't know she's my friend.
- 4:33I wish she was my friend, but she's my friend that I utilize.
- 4:36So we use that word friend in that context.
- 4:40Emotional agility from Susan David.
- 4:42When we create environments in which people feel welcome to
- 4:47share more of who they truly are, we don't just support
- 4:50well-being. We spark creativity,
- 4:54collaboration, problem solving, innovation, belonging.
- 4:59We establish the trust that is necessary for these things to
- 5:04thrive. And this is true in our homes,
- 5:06it's true in our workspaces, it's true in our social
- 5:10gatherings and faith spaces. This is really language and
- 5:17application that applies across the board in multiple areas of
- 5:20our life. More from Susan David
- 5:25Integration doesn't require a grand gesture.
- 5:29It starts with small, honest moments.
- 5:32And you've heard me talk about these small moments that add up
- 5:35before. When I'm talking about
- 5:37self-care, especially, sometimes we think we have to, you know,
- 5:40assign mass amounts of time. And in this case, we think we
- 5:43have to have these big ground gestures.
- 5:45But it's really the small, intentional, honest moments that
- 5:49add up. And for emotions, that means
- 5:52naming what you feel, showing up with curiosity, not judgement,
- 5:58making room for someone else's discomfort without rushing to
- 6:03fix it. We tend to when we want to fix
- 6:06things because we many times we have these codependent ideas
- 6:10that that it's our problem and it's our responsibility to solve
- 6:14and fix everything else in everybody else's life.
- 6:17And it also gives us a sense of value.
- 6:20And that's not healthy because our value needs to be based on
- 6:24who we are, not what we do or how we show up for other people.
- 6:28It also can come up when it's just something we're
- 6:31uncomfortable with and we just want it to go away.
- 6:34So we want to hurry up and try to fix it so we don't have to
- 6:37deal with the angst of it anymore.
- 6:40But this is not where you solve these things.
- 6:42That's some of those Band-Aid things I was talking about.
- 6:45It's that ability to make room for and sit with our own
- 6:50discomfort, others discomfort, and be reflective and allow us
- 6:56to feel it and name it and identify where do we think this
- 6:59is coming from? What do I need to help me
- 7:02resolve this, move through this? What kind of support do I need
- 7:06to help me do this? In terms of other people,
- 7:09sometimes, you know, instead of solving it, people just need us
- 7:12to sit with them. We just need to sit with
- 7:14ourselves and instead of filling our lives with a bunch of noise,
- 7:17make room to feel it. But we've grown up in a society,
- 7:21in a culture that's told us those things are uncomfortable.
- 7:24Those things are inconvenient, though.
- 7:26People don't want to hear about those things and it just ends up
- 7:31getting shoved under the rug. And that is not good for anyone.
- 7:35These things don't go away. They store in our body.
- 7:38And like I've said, they can come out and show up in some
- 7:41really unhealthy ways later on. So making that room, showing up
- 7:46with curiosity and actually naming and acknowledging what
- 7:50you're feeling without judgment, allowing it.
- 7:54Again, I don't believe in good or bad emotions.
- 7:57I some are more difficult and some are easier, but they are
- 8:02clues to let us know what's happening, what needs to be
- 8:06dealt with, what needs to be acknowledged, what needs to be
- 8:09processed. How do you view emotions?
- 8:14And I just touched on this and we're going to hit on it again
- 8:16because I think this is such an important part of being able to
- 8:20deal with this in a healthy way. Do you label and judge your
- 8:24emotions as positive or negative?
- 8:27Start by not labeling your emotions this way.
- 8:32Like I said, I'm going to say it again.
- 8:34I doubled down on this a lot because I think it's one of the
- 8:37most important steps you can take in being able to process
- 8:41your emotions in a healthy way and not allow them to stack up.
- 8:44It was pivotal in my journey and turning this corner in this
- 8:48area. Emotions are clues to what needs
- 8:51to be expressed, acknowledged, processed, and moved through.
- 8:56Instead of approaching emotions with judgement, get curious
- 9:00about them. What are they rooted in?
- 9:02Is what they are rooted in actually true?
- 9:05Or is this a thought you've been carrying around or a narrative
- 9:09that you were told when it comes down to it isn't actually true?
- 9:13And we treat our thoughts in these areas so many times as
- 9:17truth. And we have to unpack that and
- 9:20determine, is that actually true or is that just a thought that
- 9:23needs to be unlearned and and moved on from?
- 9:28Allow yourself to experience the more comfortable emotions.
- 9:32It's good for your health to feel joy.
- 9:35It's good for your health to feel contentment.
- 9:38It's good for your health to feel peace.
- 9:41It's good for your health to laugh at that funny joke at that
- 9:45comedy show. You know, I think it's really
- 9:48important to remember sometimes when it feels like, Oh my gosh,
- 9:51the world's on fire. It's not appropriate for me to
- 9:54feel joy or laugh. Yes it is.
- 9:57That is how we re feel. That is how we keep our hope
- 10:02going. That is how we find our
- 10:05resources and our energy to continue to show up every day
- 10:09authentically in the ways that we were designed to, to keep
- 10:13moving forward, to be difference makers in our world, in our
- 10:17neighborhood, in our home, in our workplace.
- 10:20So yes, these things are good for your health.
- 10:22Also. I struggled for years with
- 10:25foreboding joy, just afraid to feel a joy because I was out.
- 10:29Something out. That means something bad is
- 10:31going to happen now that life is life.
- 10:33Listen, things, good and bad things are going to happen.
- 10:36But that foreboding joy is not that there is.
- 10:38That is not an actual scientific truth that something bad's going
- 10:44to happen the next minute. Feel that joy, Allow it.
- 10:47Give yourself space for it. It's so good for us to have
- 10:51that, and we need it again. We need it for all of the
- 10:56physical health reasons, mental health reasons, emotional health
- 10:59reasons, that resource feeling, that joy feeling.
- 11:03It can be an act of resistance when you're surrounded by forces
- 11:08and powers that be that want to take you out of the fight, that
- 11:13want you to feel discouraged, that want you to quit being
- 11:16curious and asking questions. Don't let them have that.
- 11:19Don't let them steal that from you.
- 11:21So I feel really strongly about that.
- 11:24All of this, and especially that piece there, the impact of
- 11:28societal and cultural narratives.
- 11:31This has a huge impact on how free and safe we feel in
- 11:37allowing and processing and moving through and talking about
- 11:41our emotions. Society, culture, family
- 11:44systems, faith spaces all have a lot to say about what is and is
- 11:50not acceptable to feel and process.
- 11:53It is so important to realize when these narratives are
- 11:57hurting us, despite the stigmas that exist about women and
- 12:01anger. Just like all emotions, it
- 12:03requires acknowledgement, feeling, processing and moving
- 12:08through. And that's just one example of
- 12:10an emotion we've heard incorrect information and narratives
- 12:13around. If we don't allow ourselves to
- 12:16feel and move through it, then it can come out in an unhealthy
- 12:20way. Anger can be a great motivator
- 12:23for change when it's channeled in a healthy way.
- 12:26And like I said earlier, this is just one example of how societal
- 12:30narratives impact how we do or don't process emotions.
- 12:36This is a lot to cover here, and I know it's a lot in one time.
- 12:40And like I said, if you need more help and support, reach out
- 12:43to me at embracinglayers.com in that contact form.
- 12:46And let's just, you know, get together and discuss some ways
- 12:49to support you in this. But the big take away from today
- 12:52is the connection between a mental, emotional, spiritual,
- 12:56sexual, financial, physical health.
- 12:59All these systems are connected and impact each other.
- 13:02They all require our attention in order to be the healthiest
- 13:06versions of ourselves. So some ways to to put this into
- 13:10practice and start thinking about this are when you are
- 13:13feeling sensations in your body or feelings that seem to come
- 13:17out of nowhere. Acknowledge that, allow yourself
- 13:21to feel it, and try to identify what it might be rooted in.
- 13:26This can go back to exercises of writing down all that you're
- 13:29feeling, recording it on your phone and writing it in your
- 13:33notes on on a tablet, for example.
- 13:37If you have a raging headache, think about what you've been
- 13:40engaged with could be inducing that utilize the feelings wheel.
- 13:44This can be really helpful. Just just Google feelings wheel
- 13:49and I'll try to put this in the show notes as well.
- 13:51Those can that can be really helpful in naming your emotions
- 13:54because there were a lot more emotions out there than we
- 13:57realized. And it's important to name them
- 14:00accurately so we can really get to the root of them and know how
- 14:03to process them. So I, I, I will, I will find
- 14:06that and link that in the show notes.
- 14:07That feelings wheel. Is there something within that
- 14:10you can take action on to help yourself?
- 14:13Is there something that you need to talk to someone about?
- 14:17Do you need to release some anger or sadness or grief via a
- 14:21good cry or punching a pillow a few times?
- 14:25Take time to really connect the dots.
- 14:30This is such, these are such important practices.
- 14:32They have such huge impacts on our health, for ourselves and
- 14:36our relationships, our ability to show up well in all of our
- 14:39spaces, in our workspaces, in our neighborhoods and
- 14:43communities. So really be intentional about
- 14:46this. A practice that I utilized when
- 14:48I was first really struggling to get connected with this is I
- 14:52would write down my emotions every day to help me know where
- 14:57I was at. So that could be be a simple act
- 15:00that you start this week to help you start getting in touch with
- 15:04and addressing these things and unpacking some of these
- 15:07narratives that need to be unlearned and relearned.
- 15:10So I know this is a lot today. I also help it gets you thinking
- 15:14about this because this has such a huge impact on our ability to
- 15:18live well, our ability to live healthy, our ability to live
- 15:22empowered. And remember always, you are
- 15:26worthy, you are valuable, and you get to choose.
- 15:29I hope you found this supportive and helpful.
- 15:31Take good care and I'll see you next time here on the Field
- 15:35podcast.
