Latest / Adult Child of Dysfunction / E 356: Tammy's Takes #38: Healing Doesn't Always Start with Talking
Transcript
- 0:00hello, everybody.
- 0:00Welcome back to another episode of Tammy's Takes, where we take powerful conversations and turn them into practical strategies you can use right here, right now.
- 0:08So today's episode is about a conversation that I had with a most amazing young man, Michael Tafari, yesterday.
- 0:15And I wanna tell you, he does poetry, but today's episode really isn't about poetry.
- 0:20It's about something much bigger than that.
- 0:22It's about finally giving up your pain somewhere to go, and giving it somewhere to go.
- 0:27One of the things Michael said during our conversation that really stayed with me, not because it was so profound or dramatic, but because it was honest.
- 0:36He found healing through poetry.
- 0:38Now, maybe poetry isn't your thing.
- 0:40Maybe you've never written a poem in your life, but that's not really the important part.
- 0:44The point is expression.
- 0:46As adult children of dysfunction, so many of us learn very early on that it's not to- safe to speak up or express what we're thinking.
- 0:53We learn to stay so quiet.
- 0:55We learn to swallow our feelings.
- 0:56We learn to keep the peace, and every feeling we never expressed didn't disappear.
- 1:02It got stored in our bodies, in our nervous systems, in our relationships, sometimes even in our health.
- 1:08The opposite of suppression isn't perfection, my friends, it's expression.
- 1:12That expression might be writing, it might be journaling, it might be painting, it might be music, it might be prayer.
- 1:18It might be speaking to a trusted friend or a therapist, or it might even just be crying for the first time in so many years.
- 1:25It's not the method that matters nearly as much as the fact that you are finally allowing what's inside of you to have a voice.
- 1:32One thing I loved about today's conversation was watching someone who experienced bullying choose compassion instead of bitterness.
- 1:39That doesn't erase what happened to him, but it shows us something important about painful experiences, and that is painful experiences can actually shape us without having to define us.
- 1:49So here is today's challenge.
- 1:50Spend just 10 minutes today expressing something you've been carrying.
- 1:55Don't edit it.
- 1:56Don't judge it.
- 1:56Don't try to make it sound or look pretty.
- 1:59Just let it come out, because healing often begins the moment your pain no longer has to stay hidden.
- 2:05So if today's episode resonated with you, I'd love to help you discover what patterns your nervous system might still be holding onto.
- 2:11Book a call, either a complimentary clarity and calm call, or let's book a voice scan.
- 2:17And remember, you are not what happened to you.
- 2:21You are who you became after you decided to heal.
- 2:25Thank you so much, guys, and I will see you back next time.
- 2:28Love you all.
