- 1:18Speaker 4: kicked Beck out of the studio because she had COVID. Yes,
- 1:23Speaker 4: and by kicked out, I meant I didn't let her
- 1:25Speaker 4: in in the first place.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Yes, that was they please, I love you, but stay away.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Beck was literally like, oh, hey, I've got COVID And
- 1:32Speaker 4: I know that sounds fake because COVID, you know, kinda
- 1:36Speaker 4: doesn't exist anymore. And I'm like it does you come

- 1:41Speaker 4: broke tips. It's a Mey Marie exactly. And if you've

- 2:22Speaker 4: definitely not pre recorded, mister Sagrici. Yes, we love hearing

- 2:42Speaker 4: the Money on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or honestly where a
- 2:45Speaker 4: you tune in or our dms. This week's review comes
- 2:49Speaker 4: from our friend Casey Louise Hi Casey, and she says,
- 2:53Speaker 4: I started listening only six months ago.
- 2:56Speaker 3: The other day I had a surprise two hundred and
- 2:58Speaker 3: fifty dollars subscription to go through.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Not only did I have the emergency funds to pull from,
- 3:05Speaker 4: but I was also confident enough to push for a
- 3:08Speaker 4: refund and had the subscription refunded anyway. As an ADHD galie,
- 3:14Speaker 4: this is genuinely the first time in my life I
- 3:16Speaker 4: didn't panic in an unexpected bill and was confident enough
- 3:20Speaker 4: to ask for a refund.
- 3:22Speaker 5: I'm so proud of you, Casey, get it.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Queen.
- 3:25Speaker 5: That's a big, unexpected charge.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I am insatiable.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I love this.
- 3:29Speaker 6: Get the money back, and also welcome to the community.
- 3:31Speaker 6: I always six months in, but it still feels fresh.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Your past probation, Your past probation. Wait, maybe we passed probation.
- 3:38Speaker 4: That's probably better way to look at it. Yeah, yeah,
- 3:40Speaker 4: thank god, I was stressed. Still trying. I'm still trying
- 3:44Speaker 4: now for a little frivolity. If you could ask us anything,
- 3:48Speaker 4: what would it be? Every week we ask you, our
- 3:51Speaker 4: very clever community, for questions of the weekend.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Honestly, up until this point, you have never disappointed.
- 3:56Speaker 4: This week's question comes from tany If you had an
- 4:00Speaker 4: extra hour in the day, how would you spend your time?
- 4:03Speaker 5: Oh this is so fun.
- 4:05Speaker 6: I like the practical part of me wants to say
- 4:08Speaker 6: something productive, but I think I would just read like
- 4:12Speaker 6: that's my honest answer.
- 4:14Speaker 3: We are actually really cool. Yeah, we are so cool.
- 4:17Speaker 3: I don't know what you're expecting us to answer with
- 4:20Speaker 3: an extra time in.
- 4:21Speaker 6: Bed with the cats and like a little yummy snack
- 4:25Speaker 6: or maybe my hot girl walk because I am finding
- 4:27Speaker 6: now that the light goes way earlier. If daylight savings
- 4:31Speaker 6: being over, it's really hard to get the evening hot
- 4:33Speaker 6: girl walking.
- 4:34Speaker 4: I'm not getting my hot girl walk in either. But
- 4:36Speaker 4: I'm not sure if that's because I have two under
- 4:38Speaker 4: two or not.
- 4:39Speaker 5: I fear it maybe that.
- 4:40Speaker 4: No, it's definitely because I'm just not trying hard enough.
- 4:43Speaker 4: As for the internet my hour, I'm going to do
- 4:46Speaker 4: a scrolly scroll in bed.
- 4:48Speaker 5: A little bit of maths time.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Well, at the moment, I feel like the whole day
- 4:52Speaker 4: like I've got work and I've got life, and you
- 4:55Speaker 4: get toddlers to bed, and then by the time the
- 4:58Speaker 4: bedtime routine and dinner and buff and every everything is
- 5:00Speaker 4: done as kind of like eight pm, and it feels
- 5:03Speaker 4: like a decompression time. So Steve and I kind of
- 5:05Speaker 4: like look at each other but like don't say anything,
- 5:07Speaker 4: and we sit on the couch and we scroll on
- 5:08Speaker 4: our phones, and then all of a sudden, it's like
- 5:11Speaker 4: ten pm and we're like, oh, we should go to bed,
- 5:13Speaker 4: And like, if you know anything about me, you know
- 5:16Speaker 4: that I have a very specific bedtime routine.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Just no, I've been present for this routine once or twice,
- 5:23Speaker 5: Like I have to have.
- 5:24Speaker 4: A shower, I have to like obviously wash my makeup off.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I have like a fifty million step toothcare routine that
- 5:31Speaker 4: I do. I do my skin care, I braid my hair,
- 5:34Speaker 4: I have a cup of tea which jess Is made
- 5:36Speaker 4: for me a number of times, Thank you Jessica. And
- 5:39Speaker 4: by the time I'm in bed, it's like ten thirty eleven. Yeah,
- 5:42Speaker 4: can I just peg that back because I would love
- 5:45Speaker 4: to get back in bed by ten by ten after
- 5:48Speaker 4: doing my stupid routine and just scrolly scrolling instead of
- 5:52Speaker 4: feeling like I have to go straight to sleep because
- 5:55Speaker 4: I am using that hour still, but then I'm not
- 5:58Speaker 4: getting as much sleep.
- 5:59Speaker 5: Yes, and that's a big one for parents, I know,
- 6:01Speaker 5: but I.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Feel guilty the whole time. I'm like, I should be sleeping.
- 6:04Speaker 4: I should be sleeping. I want guilt free scroll time.
- 6:06Speaker 6: What does it say about the state of the world
- 6:08Speaker 6: that both of us just want like relaxing quiet time.
- 6:13Speaker 4: I don't know, but I don't want to dive too
- 6:15Speaker 4: deep into it. And I mean, we all have the
- 6:18Speaker 4: same twenty four hours in the days beyond, say, right,
- 6:20Speaker 4: so if anyone can do it, she can do it,
- 6:22Speaker 4: and then we can do it.
- 6:24Speaker 5: We can try we can certainly try.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Do you reckon? She scrolls on my phone?
- 6:27Speaker 6: Surely if I was a celebrity, i'd be scared to
- 6:30Speaker 6: look at my phone. I actually think they don't scroll
- 6:32Speaker 6: because I'd be too afraid that i'd see something awful
- 6:34Speaker 6: about me.
- 6:35Speaker 4: You know, how popular do you have to get before
- 6:37Speaker 4: you don't touch your phone because I'm an.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Addict, Jess, Yeah, I don't know.
- 6:42Speaker 5: That's a good question, Like.
- 6:44Speaker 4: And how many hours a day do I spend with
- 6:46Speaker 4: my phone in reaching proximity?
- 6:48Speaker 6: If you ever want to feel attacked, look at the
- 6:50Speaker 6: thing that tells you how many time you've picked your
- 6:52Speaker 6: phone up in a day.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't know that was a thing.
- 6:55Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 6:55Speaker 6: If it's just the app that I use to block
- 6:58Speaker 6: my I'm trying to reduce my screen time every I
- 7:00Speaker 6: just bought a brick. Yeah, oh, I use Opal the app.
- 7:03Speaker 6: It's really good, but it'll tell you how many times
- 7:05Speaker 6: you've picked your phone up. Oh, and it is not
- 7:08Speaker 6: nice since it's very scary, like just the reflex even
- 7:12Speaker 6: if you don't do anything with it, the reflex of
- 7:14Speaker 6: like picking your phone up, working at it mind boggling.
- 7:17Speaker 4: What would be on stage do if you guys have
- 7:20Speaker 4: a burning question for us, please slip into our DMS
- 7:23Speaker 4: and your musings might just get you featured in next
- 7:26Speaker 4: week's episode. The more niche, the better. Really, I feel
- 7:29Speaker 4: like you guys learn a lot about us. Yeah, from
- 7:32Speaker 4: very niche questions. It's just a greechi. Yes, what money wins?
- 7:36Speaker 4: Can you share with us? From the community.
- 7:38Speaker 6: I've got some goodies for you this week. The Facebook
- 7:40Speaker 6: group's been popping off. The first one I have is
- 7:43Speaker 6: from Allen who said money when we need a dog food,
- 7:46Speaker 6: so jumped on shop back and pet stock had their
- 7:48Speaker 6: upsized eighteen percent cash back. Going got the dog food
- 7:52Speaker 6: free shipping because it was over twenty five dollars. Bag
- 7:55Speaker 6: of dog food arrives yesterday. They've accidentally sent us the
- 7:57Speaker 6: wrong food, so I've paid two dollars, I'll get eighteen
- 8:01Speaker 6: per cent back and the value of the bag that
- 8:03Speaker 6: she got was actually one hundred and forty dollars.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Why is pet food so expensive?
- 8:07Speaker 1: Though?
- 8:08Speaker 6: Crazy as someone who has to buy the fancy one
- 8:10Speaker 6: for medical reasons, not a fan, but Alan did do
- 8:13Speaker 6: as all good community members should do and provide it
- 8:15Speaker 6: as her pet.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Tax photo exactly. And if you're not paying pet tax.
- 8:18Speaker 4: You're not paying real tax.
- 8:20Speaker 6: It's a really, really cute puppy photo. I highly recommend
- 8:23Speaker 6: everybody goes and looks. Next, I've got a money in
- 8:25Speaker 6: from Sophie who said I realized I had enough points
- 8:27Speaker 6: with Telstra just from paying my monthly bill to get
- 8:29Speaker 6: a fifty dollars gift card Toolies. My husband had enough
- 8:32Speaker 6: points to do the same, So it's one hundred dollars
- 8:34Speaker 6: that's going in our.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Sayings this week money win.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Everyone was talking about Telstra point lately. It's making me
- 8:39Speaker 5: want to switch to Telstrap.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Telstra hit us up, but also maybe don't, because like
- 8:44Speaker 4: your plans are really expensive, so your customers do deserve points. Yeah.
- 8:48Speaker 6: Actually, that's probably a good way to look at it,
- 8:49Speaker 6: isn't it. Next, I've got a money in from Taylor,
- 8:51Speaker 6: who said I was looking for sleep suits my son.
- 8:53Speaker 6: I almost bought a branch new one for sixty nine dollars.
- 8:56Speaker 5: I'm so sorry. That's incredibly expensive.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Don't ergo be running me broke.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Wow, I didn't realize the cost that much.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Thought why I only buy them on sale and on
- 9:05Speaker 3: the iconic.
- 9:07Speaker 5: Yeah, and then you can get really good cash back
- 9:08Speaker 5: on the iconic.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:10Speaker 6: Well, Taylor checked marketplace. She got eleven suits for twenty
- 9:15Speaker 6: five dollars. She was almost eight hundred dollars worth if
- 9:18Speaker 6: she brought a brand new What.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Do you need eleven?
- 9:19Speaker 1: Like?
- 9:20Speaker 4: No judgment, queen, Like, that's an elite money win. What
- 9:23Speaker 4: do you need eleven suits for? And am I the
- 9:26Speaker 4: outlier here where Harvey just has like four like one
- 9:31Speaker 4: with arms, one without arms, a warm one with arms,
- 9:35Speaker 4: a warm one without arms. That's it, that's we've called it.
- 9:37Speaker 4: I'm not judging because I fear.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Eleven Hobney, are you in the wash?
- 9:41Speaker 4: Oh?
- 9:42Speaker 5: This is the thing.
- 9:42Speaker 6: Maybe like babies go through stuff so quick. Maybe she's
- 9:44Speaker 6: not keeping up with the laundry, which I totally get
- 9:47Speaker 6: new mum and all that.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I don't come to my house and look in my look.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Yeah, the piless like a desert, not barren. It's piles
- 9:56Speaker 4: and piles and you might get lost.
- 9:57Speaker 6: Oh god, well I'm having a baby do that to you.
- 10:00Speaker 6: I think you're all just doing your best, and that's okay.
- 10:02Speaker 6: Maybe the sleepsuits will help. Next, I've got a money
- 10:04Speaker 6: in from Marissa, who said she claimed four hundred dollars
- 10:06Speaker 6: in private health rebates.
- 10:08Speaker 3: For her Polartes classes. Money Weed didn't know.
- 10:10Speaker 6: It's covered under her policy, so she claimed heaps of
- 10:12Speaker 6: classes from the past eighteen months.
- 10:14Speaker 3: But it was so worth it.
- 10:16Speaker 4: I'm going to have to check my private health insurance
- 10:18Speaker 4: because I haven't been doing my polarates classes.
- 10:21Speaker 3: But that might be even more motivation to get back.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Cute Marissa.
- 10:24Speaker 6: I'm going to need to know where you're going, what
- 10:25Speaker 6: you're doing, what your policy is, because that sounds lovely.
- 10:29Speaker 6: And then last of this week, I've got money in
- 10:30Speaker 6: from Cindy who said I've recently helped my friend with
- 10:33Speaker 6: superannuation to make it not this scary monster that they
- 10:36Speaker 6: stick their head in the sandover and don't understand, and
- 10:39Speaker 6: turned it into something she can see and get into.
- 10:41Speaker 6: We've changed from growth to high growth because she's got
- 10:44Speaker 6: plenty of time, and now we're both feeling more positive
- 10:46Speaker 6: about it.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Stop it so sweet.
- 10:48Speaker 4: See, if you're in the community, even if the tips
- 10:51Speaker 4: and tricks aren't going to benefit you directly, they benefit
- 10:55Speaker 4: the community.
- 10:56Speaker 6: They're spreading the good word that I always say, the
- 10:58Speaker 6: disciples going out there and spreading the word.
- 11:00Speaker 5: If she's on the money and financial literacy.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Someone the other day said that we are the Jehovah's
- 11:05Speaker 4: Witnesses of finance, and I was like, I'm gonna take it.
- 11:10Speaker 4: I will knock on your door and try and spend
- 11:12Speaker 4: the word. I will knock on your door and be like, hey,
- 11:15Speaker 4: so can I tell you about theranuation? Hello, give me
- 11:18Speaker 4: your address.
- 11:19Speaker 5: My name is Elder Victoria.
- 11:20Speaker 3: That's not Jehovah's Witnesses. That's Mormons.
- 11:22Speaker 5: That's true.
- 11:23Speaker 3: We are just a religious cult.
- 11:25Speaker 5: The cold is culting and I'm honestly not mad about it.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I'm not either.
- 11:28Speaker 6: And then, lastly, I have my own little money win,
- 11:30Speaker 6: so I want to share you know that I do
- 11:32Speaker 6: love a little reselling of my clothes, the stuff around
- 11:35Speaker 6: my house, anything to get an extra dollar.
- 11:38Speaker 5: I do know that.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Definitely, I would argue that you're an Ebae addict.
- 11:42Speaker 6: Well, funny you say that, because it is now free
- 11:45Speaker 6: to sell on eBay, they remove actual money win. EBA's
- 11:48Speaker 6: removing the cellar fees for every day Australians make it
- 11:50Speaker 6: easier than ever to turn the items you love but
- 11:53Speaker 6: no longer need into cash and then keep every single
- 11:56Speaker 6: dollar while you do.
- 11:57Speaker 4: That's actually such a money win because I feel like
- 12:00Speaker 4: there's always been like a few barriers to entry that
- 12:02Speaker 4: have stopped me. I'm like, oh, I can't be bothered. Ye,
- 12:04Speaker 4: Like it'll be a few dollars. What if it doesn't sell,
- 12:06Speaker 4: Like it's never been bad, but now it's free. Yeah,
- 12:09Speaker 4: I'm sorry, I'm going to be using that platform over
- 12:12Speaker 4: everything else.
- 12:13Speaker 6: Time to clear everything out. It's just for today Australian.
- 12:15Speaker 6: So if you do have an eBay.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Store, now that's not for you.
- 12:18Speaker 3: You running a business.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Yeah, so any everyday person who's selling under twenty five
- 12:23Speaker 6: thousand dollars annually, which.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Or who's selling that stuff on eBay if they're not
- 12:27Speaker 3: running a business.
- 12:28Speaker 6: Must be very nice and so yeah, we'll pop all
- 12:31Speaker 6: the details in the caption for you. But I think
- 12:32Speaker 6: it's just a really good opportunity. We always say, cycle
- 12:36Speaker 6: things in, cycle things out, and while you can keep
- 12:38Speaker 6: as much money as you can, I think it's a
- 12:40Speaker 6: great time to do so. And we're really excited because
- 12:42Speaker 6: eBay are sponsoring this episode.
- 12:44Speaker 5: So thank you eBay. I love you guys.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Money win.
- 12:46Speaker 4: But also, like the plumber with a leaky tap, I
- 12:50Speaker 4: need to go and upload so much of my staff
- 12:53Speaker 4: because just get rid of it. But Also, it's going
- 12:56Speaker 4: to go out of fashion in like three years. Why
- 12:58Speaker 4: do I keep holding on to stuff? I don't give
- 13:00Speaker 4: it a new life.
- 13:01Speaker 5: I'll come over. I'll help you get it all listed.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Now.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Beck isn't here because she did us a dirty and
- 13:08Speaker 4: got COVID. But I'm gonna channel my best Beck energy.
- 13:12Speaker 4: So think of me as your cooler, hipper, way more
- 13:15Speaker 4: fun sister, and I'm going to give you some breake tips.
- 13:17Speaker 5: I'm ready.
- 13:18Speaker 4: This one comes from Sharon and she says this might
- 13:21Speaker 4: be a little bit niche, but I've decided that I'm
- 13:24Speaker 4: not allowed to spend any money before midday.
- 13:27Speaker 5: That's fun. I like it, she said.
- 13:30Speaker 4: I realized most of my impulse spending was random coffee,
- 13:33Speaker 4: snacks or online shopping as I get going in the
- 13:36Speaker 4: morning at work, if I still want it after lunch,
- 13:38Speaker 4: I can get it, but honestly, I usually forget and
- 13:41Speaker 4: I haven't bought coffee in a week.
- 13:42Speaker 3: That's good.
- 13:43Speaker 6: I feel like I would need to flip it because
- 13:44Speaker 6: I'm like a late night doom scroller shopping type of person.
- 13:47Speaker 6: So it's like, if I want to buy something, it's
- 13:48Speaker 6: got to be done by midday. Well, no purchases after
- 13:51Speaker 6: mentally get that.
- 13:52Speaker 4: And my best friend Harriet, who doesn't listen to the
- 13:55Speaker 4: show because she says my voice is really annoying. Best
- 13:57Speaker 4: friend energy she has just she's not online shopping at
- 14:02Speaker 4: all except for on one day.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Per month like a bonanza.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Yes, And she's like, I've.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Been doing too much online shopping, Like every second day
- 14:09Speaker 4: I was getting like an iconic purchase or like, you know,
- 14:12Speaker 4: something that I wanted. So I've been banking all my
- 14:14Speaker 4: purchases and then I can only buy them the day
- 14:18Speaker 4: after my salary comes in, if I still want it,
- 14:22Speaker 4: And she's like, and half the time, I don't want
- 14:23Speaker 4: it anymore. It's very close because she's like had to
- 14:26Speaker 4: wait for so long that she's like, oh, what did
- 14:27Speaker 4: I even want those pants for?
- 14:30Speaker 6: I do feel i'd have you know when you get
- 14:31Speaker 6: pain and you're like, I'm so rich. I feel like
- 14:34Speaker 6: i'd have that energy. I always need to do it,
- 14:36Speaker 6: like the day before my salary comes in. So it's like, well,
- 14:38Speaker 6: you've got what you've got, and if you've waited the
- 14:40Speaker 6: whole month, then you can have it if you can
- 14:42Speaker 6: still afford it.
- 14:43Speaker 4: I think that she's using it as a I didn't
- 14:46Speaker 4: realize it added up so much. Actually, I'm going to
- 14:50Speaker 4: order all the stuff I want online just today. But
- 14:53Speaker 4: I actually don't want any of this anymore because I realized.
- 14:56Speaker 3: It adds up a lot.
- 14:57Speaker 5: That's very clever from her.
- 14:58Speaker 4: The next one I've got is from Emma, and she says,
- 15:01Speaker 4: I put all of my subscriptions onto one specific account,
- 15:05Speaker 4: and then I transfer that exact amount that I need
- 15:08Speaker 4: every single month. If a random subscription tries to come
- 15:11Speaker 4: out that I forgot about, it actually just declines. It's
- 15:14Speaker 4: accidentally saved me so much money.
- 15:17Speaker 6: I do this accidentally because you know, I don't keep
- 15:19Speaker 6: money in my six million bank accounts.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't keep.
- 15:22Speaker 6: Money in the one attached my card because I have
- 15:24Speaker 6: a bad habit of losing my card. So it's like
- 15:26Speaker 6: if I ever lost it and someone tried to use it,
- 15:27Speaker 6: jokes on you. There's literally zero dollars in there. So
- 15:30Speaker 6: if subscriptions autodebit like, yeah, I have to remember to
- 15:34Speaker 6: transfer the money. It does sometimes buy me in the
- 15:36Speaker 6: ass because sometimes they come out and I'm like, oop,
- 15:38Speaker 6: there's no money there. But it does also help me
- 15:41Speaker 6: when random things come out.
- 15:42Speaker 3: That's very fair. And now I've got one, and it's
- 15:45Speaker 3: from me.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Because Beck always brings one, I'm bringing one, and it's
- 15:48Speaker 4: kind of vibing off the same put twenty four hours
- 15:51Speaker 4: between you and your spending rule that I have. So
- 15:56Speaker 4: I have started using my notesap as like a cooling
- 15:59Speaker 4: off zone. So it's kind of like a cooling off cart.
- 16:03Speaker 4: I will like take screenshots and put them into a
- 16:06Speaker 4: notes app that I tell myself I'm coming back to
- 16:10Speaker 4: and instead of buying something straight away, the link lives there,
- 16:14Speaker 4: but it's got to live there for forty eight hours.
- 16:16Speaker 4: So I've done this for a very long time, twenty
- 16:19Speaker 4: four hours between you and your spending. But now it's
- 16:21Speaker 4: forty eight hours and half the time I'm like, why
- 16:26Speaker 4: did I like this? And then the other half of
- 16:28Speaker 4: the time I forget to check my notes app because
- 16:30Speaker 4: I have ADHD and out of sight, out of mind,
- 16:32Speaker 4: and so that's been fantastic for my bank account.
- 16:34Speaker 5: That's a double wind for you.
- 16:36Speaker 3: I feel like it's really good.
- 16:37Speaker 4: So I guess my tip is get ADHD and you'll
- 16:41Speaker 4: just forget, and I mean you'll.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Also impulse spend a lot more. We are welcome, yes, but.
- 16:46Speaker 6: I like that we're increasing for twenty four forty eight.
- 16:49Speaker 6: Maybe that's like the next level up.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, we're growing. This is personal growth. I don't
- 16:53Speaker 4: know if I'll stick to it, but for now let's try.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Do you want more of our broke tips and money
- 16:58Speaker 4: wins basically on tap? I would be joining ow She's

- 17:22Speaker 5: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 17:24Speaker 5: money dilemma.

- 17:43Speaker 7: just find yourself on the show.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Now, let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Hi.
- 17:51Speaker 2: First of all, just wanted to say I love the show.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I'm a religious three day a week listener. I've got
- 17:56Speaker 2: a bit of a money dilemma for you. It's more
- 17:59Speaker 2: career related. So I'm twenty six and have spent the
- 18:02Speaker 2: past like five years moving jobs a lot to try
- 18:04Speaker 2: and find the right fit. And I think the industry
- 18:07Speaker 2: and the job that I've finally found my place in
- 18:09Speaker 2: and feel really, you know, fulfilled in. It is really
- 18:12Speaker 2: fun and exciting. However, my salary is quite low and
- 18:16Speaker 2: the room for growth seems quite limited. For context, my
- 18:19Speaker 2: job is part of a team with strict salary plus
- 18:21Speaker 2: commission structure, so asking for rises off the table. I've
- 18:24Speaker 2: been at my job now for almost a year and
- 18:26Speaker 2: a half, but I'm really stressed about my salary, getting
- 18:28Speaker 2: me to the places I want to be and paying
- 18:30Speaker 2: for things in the next five to ten years like
- 18:33Speaker 2: planning maternity leave and weddings and everything like that. So
- 18:37Speaker 2: my dilemma is, do you stay in a job you
- 18:39Speaker 2: love and are finally happy, but sacrifice your money goals?
- 18:43Speaker 2: Or do you leave and try yet again in another
- 18:45Speaker 2: role or industry with more pay Any guidance or help
- 18:48Speaker 2: would be really appreciated.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Thank you, Jess. What are you doing?
- 18:51Speaker 6: It's the age old question, isn't it. Only you can
- 18:54Speaker 6: answer this, and you need to assess what is important
- 18:57Speaker 6: to you in terms of your life. Life plan sounds
- 19:01Speaker 6: very dramatic, but if I'm being honest me, especially when
- 19:04Speaker 6: I was younger, I prioritize money. Like I'm going to
- 19:08Speaker 6: be so real with you. I was like, girls got
- 19:10Speaker 6: to eat costs of living crisis. I am a big picture,
- 19:14Speaker 6: long term catastrophe size.
- 19:16Speaker 3: She's the money, so long, so unhappy, absolutely hating.
- 19:20Speaker 6: Being Yeah, but like when I was younger, I worked
- 19:22Speaker 6: in jobs where I was not happy and I but
- 19:25Speaker 6: like I was paid well and then ultimately led me
- 19:27Speaker 6: to a job where I am happy and I am
- 19:29Speaker 6: paid well and it.
- 19:30Speaker 5: All worked out.
- 19:31Speaker 3: I got to say that I'm literally her boss.
- 19:33Speaker 5: She's anty right there.
- 19:35Speaker 6: But it's you know, it's one of those things where
- 19:37Speaker 6: I think for some people, like if Beck we're here,
- 19:39Speaker 6: I have no doubt that she would be giving the
- 19:42Speaker 6: complete opposite answer to me, and Beck would be saying,
- 19:44Speaker 6: your happiness is the most important thing you need to
- 19:47Speaker 6: enjoy your life.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Da da da.
- 19:48Speaker 6: I agree, And it's just I agree that Beck would
- 19:50Speaker 6: say that, Yeah, I think it's just two different people
- 19:53Speaker 6: with two different perspectives. And for me, I've always very
- 19:56Speaker 6: much been of the train of thought that I'm happy
- 19:59Speaker 6: to sacrifice almost anything, short term pain, long term gains,
- 20:02Speaker 6: you know what, I mean to set myself up to
- 20:04Speaker 6: have the life that I want to live. But I
- 20:06Speaker 6: also fully acknowledge that that way of living is not
- 20:09Speaker 6: for everybody, and there are some people who would not
- 20:12Speaker 6: be able to I don't want to say cope, but
- 20:15Speaker 6: like they would find it challenging to be somewhere that
- 20:18Speaker 6: they weren't happy, and that would really really detrimentally impact
- 20:21Speaker 6: them because they might not be able to compartmentalize it
- 20:23Speaker 6: or whatever that looks like for you. And so I
- 20:25Speaker 6: think that you need to assess, particularly because you said
- 20:29Speaker 6: there's not long term growth. It sounds like from what
- 20:32Speaker 6: you're telling us, it's stagnant. If it was, oh, like
- 20:35Speaker 6: right now, it's not great, but there's opportunity to grow,
- 20:38Speaker 6: my answer might be different. But if it's never going
- 20:41Speaker 6: to change, you need to, I guess, decide, like, can
- 20:44Speaker 6: you comfortably live within your means or achieve the goals
- 20:47Speaker 6: that you want to achieve? With the salary growth that
- 20:50Speaker 6: you have projected.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:52Speaker 6: The only other thing I would say is you said
- 20:54Speaker 6: that like comms are involved, and so i'd be interested
- 20:56Speaker 6: to know what that looks like. Can you hustle harder
- 20:59Speaker 6: to inc is your commission? Yeah, but that's so dependent
- 21:02Speaker 6: on industry, that's so dependent on business structure. Like I
- 21:04Speaker 6: don't really have enough information to I feel like give
- 21:07Speaker 6: you a helpful answer there. But generally in commission based roles,
- 21:11Speaker 6: it can be what you put in is what you
- 21:12Speaker 6: get out. But I also know that that's not trure
- 21:14Speaker 6: one hundred percent of the time.
- 21:16Speaker 4: I'm on your side, jest, that's exactly what I think.
- 21:19Speaker 4: But then I also still think it's worth a conversation.
- 21:22Speaker 4: I know you're saying, oh, it's not up for debate,
- 21:25Speaker 4: but when was the last time that base salary was reviewed?
- 21:29Speaker 3: Like the point is that a base salary.
- 21:31Speaker 4: That was set in two thousand and nine and no
- 21:32Speaker 4: one's questioned it since then, and it's actually not reflective
- 21:36Speaker 4: of the costs associated with today or what is fair
- 21:41Speaker 4: and reasonable. And then I would also do I don't
- 21:44Speaker 4: know if it's like budgeting or projections, but I'd sit
- 21:46Speaker 4: down and work out Okay, with these comms, the hustle
- 21:50Speaker 4: is real. What can I reasonably expect to make this
- 21:54Speaker 4: here from comms? What could I reasonably expect if I did,
- 21:57Speaker 4: you know, a couple more hours or changed a few things.
- 22:00Speaker 4: Because the benefit of being in a commissions based role
- 22:04Speaker 4: is like I won't say the world is your oyster,
- 22:07Speaker 4: but it is scalable. Like you could just do your
- 22:09Speaker 4: thirty eight hours a week and be like, oh, that's it,
- 22:12Speaker 4: But like what if you sprinkled in another fifteen or
- 22:16Speaker 4: twenty minutes each day? Would that get you more comms?
- 22:19Speaker 4: And does that change the lifestyle that you have? And
- 22:22Speaker 4: I'm not saying you need to work a ridiculous amount,
- 22:25Speaker 4: but what would those little tweaks look like so that
- 22:27Speaker 4: the role really did work for you?
- 22:29Speaker 3: Not the opposite.
- 22:31Speaker 4: And I do think that happiness in a role fantastic.
- 22:35Speaker 4: I love that for you, But is that your overall life?
- 22:38Speaker 4: Happiness is having a good job worth maybe not being
- 22:43Speaker 4: happy in every other aspect of your life. Most people
- 22:46Speaker 4: only spend thirty eight to forty hours a week in
- 22:48Speaker 4: a job, and yes, it feels like the whole week,
- 22:51Speaker 4: but what does your lifestyle look like outside of that?
- 22:54Speaker 3: Is it sustainable.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Is it something that you are proud of, because I
- 22:58Speaker 4: promise that job is going to get rid old real quick.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Even if you love it and you love the people,
- 23:03Speaker 4: If the rest of your life is being compromised, you're
- 23:06Speaker 4: soon going to become I would say, a little bit
- 23:08Speaker 4: resentful of that situation.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a big one. You have to have money
- 23:13Speaker 5: to live, like, that's the thing.
- 23:14Speaker 6: And that's what I personally find really hard to reconcile
- 23:17Speaker 6: is it doesn't feel like it's going to get any
- 23:19Speaker 6: cheaper to exist in this world. And so it's Yeah,
- 23:23Speaker 6: your happiness is so important, and I don't want you
- 23:25Speaker 6: to think that I'm saying, like, suck it up, be unhappy,
- 23:28Speaker 6: da da da da.
- 23:28Speaker 5: Yeah, just to earn more money.
- 23:30Speaker 6: Like having a job where you are happy, we love
- 23:32Speaker 6: the people, we love the work is so valuable and
- 23:35Speaker 6: I don't want to discredit that. But it is also
- 23:39Speaker 6: exactly as you're saying, like, if you're going to be
- 23:41Speaker 6: really stressed because you can't pay your bills or you
- 23:43Speaker 6: can't achieve the goals you want to do, like that,
- 23:45Speaker 6: I think also will eventually.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Take a toll on you.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Yeah, And like coming from somebody who is a boss.
- 23:52Speaker 4: If my team we're feeling like that, talk to me.
- 23:55Speaker 4: I do actually want to have those conversations because I
- 23:58Speaker 4: mean a similar position and where I am a small business,
- 24:02Speaker 4: so I am acutely aware that there are some career caps,
- 24:06Speaker 4: like Jess is not going to be able to take over.
- 24:09Speaker 4: She's on the money and earn six billion dollars a year.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Somewhere else she might. But let's have these conversations because
- 24:16Speaker 4: if they're a good staff member, if you are a
- 24:18Speaker 4: really valuable part of that team, I promise your boss
- 24:20Speaker 4: is going to be like, oh, what can I do?
- 24:21Speaker 4: What can I do to make you like this more
- 24:23Speaker 4: so that you stay because good staff is so hard
- 24:26Speaker 4: to come by.
- 24:27Speaker 5: Yeah, and there might be other perks other than the
- 24:28Speaker 5: salary that they can provide you.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Exactly everything I think is negotiable.
- 24:34Speaker 4: All right, Well, let's get into this week's DMS because
- 24:37Speaker 4: it's something many of us have faced in our career,
- 24:41Speaker 4: the moment where you realize, maybe I should have asked
- 24:44Speaker 4: for that raise a little bit sooner.
- 24:46Speaker 5: Is this our last person in five years?
- 24:48Speaker 4: Yes?
- 24:49Speaker 3: So this person said, V belize help me.
- 24:52Speaker 4: I think I've been underpaid and now I don't know
- 24:55Speaker 4: if I've left it too late to fix it. I
- 24:58Speaker 4: recently found out that a new higher in my team
- 25:01Speaker 4: is basically doing the same role as me, but with
- 25:03Speaker 4: less experience. He's earning about twenty five thousand dollars more.
- 25:07Speaker 5: That's a lot of money.
- 25:08Speaker 4: I've been here for three years. I've had great performance reviews.
- 25:11Speaker 4: I've never caused an issue, and now I feel embarrassed,
- 25:16Speaker 4: like I've been taking advantage of for not speaking up sooner.
- 25:20Speaker 4: I want to ask for a pay rise, but I'm
- 25:21Speaker 4: worried that they're going to say no, or worse that
- 25:24Speaker 4: I should have raised it earlier. Did I mess this up?
- 25:27Speaker 4: Or can I still fix it? Oh?
- 25:29Speaker 6: You should not feel embarrassed. I think this is kind
- 25:32Speaker 6: of common. This happened to my boyfriend.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Actually, he you thought you were about to say this
- 25:37Speaker 3: happened to me, and I was like, girl, not in
- 25:38Speaker 3: my business.
- 25:39Speaker 6: This happened to my boyfriend. He's a video so it's
- 25:41Speaker 6: like the longer a video. I think a lot of
- 25:44Speaker 6: those kinds of roles, the more.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Money you are, yep, and because you get more senior.
- 25:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 25:48Speaker 6: And I think he've been there a couple of years
- 25:50Speaker 6: and he found out that the new hires that have
- 25:52Speaker 6: been brought in were earning more than him and more
- 25:54Speaker 6: than like his counterparts as well. I think that as
- 25:58Speaker 6: much as we would all love to live in a
- 26:00Speaker 6: world where businesses are all doing the right thing and
- 26:03Speaker 6: they're all making sure that there's pay parity for everybody
- 26:06Speaker 6: and that you know, everyone doing the equivalent job is
- 26:09Speaker 6: doing the equivalent job, it's I think we talk about
- 26:11Speaker 6: how loyalty is not always rewarded. You know, people who
- 26:14Speaker 6: job hop statistically earn more, and it's because in the
- 26:18Speaker 6: job market, to attract new people and to attract good people,
- 26:21Speaker 6: I think as well, companies do have to offer more money,
- 26:24Speaker 6: or offer more perk, or offer whatever.
- 26:26Speaker 5: But that doesn't mean that most of the.
- 26:28Speaker 6: Time they're turning around to the people who've been there
- 26:29Speaker 6: for a long time or working hard or doing whatever
- 26:31Speaker 6: and say, oh, well, Sam, I know that you're earning
- 26:34Speaker 6: fifty thousand, we just hired someone who's going to do
- 26:37Speaker 6: the same thing as you. We're going to pay them
- 26:38Speaker 6: seventy thousand, even though you've been here three years.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Disgusting.
- 26:41Speaker 6: Most businesses don't do that, like it's just the sad reality,
- 26:45Speaker 6: and so I think you shouldn't be embarrassed because I'm
- 26:48Speaker 6: sure this is happening. It's happened to my partner, I'm
- 26:50Speaker 6: sure it's happened to many many other people as well.
- 26:53Speaker 6: I think that you should absolutely have a conversation about it.
- 26:56Speaker 6: This is why laws came into effect that prevent pay
- 26:58Speaker 6: secrecy clauses, because you have a right to know what
- 27:01Speaker 6: other people are earning, and you have a right to
- 27:04Speaker 6: like then have a conversation based off of that. I
- 27:06Speaker 6: think you have very solid grounds to go to your
- 27:10Speaker 6: employer and say, hey, it's not about what you pay them,
- 27:14Speaker 6: it's about what I deserve. Because if you're saying someone
- 27:17Speaker 6: coming in with less experience than me is worth fat.
- 27:19Speaker 3: It's not about them. You just valued the role lot more.
- 27:22Speaker 3: I'm doing that role.
- 27:23Speaker 6: Yeah, It's like, logically it makes sense for you to
- 27:26Speaker 6: then be asking to I think overstep it a little bit,
- 27:29Speaker 6: but at the very least be matched.
- 27:31Speaker 3: I think that's mortifying.
- 27:33Speaker 5: Yeah, it's embarrassing for the employer.
- 27:35Speaker 4: Yeah, Like it actually frustrates me, and like I love
- 27:40Speaker 4: this for you. I love that you're asking.
- 27:42Speaker 3: It makes me so mad that you ended this with
- 27:46Speaker 3: did I mess up? Can I fix this?
- 27:49Speaker 4: No? Your employer is the one that messed up. Your
- 27:52Speaker 4: employer is the one that, like, should be fixing this.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Your employer is the one that should be embarrassed, one
- 27:57Speaker 4: that they've been caught out, but two that they did
- 27:59Speaker 4: that in the first place. I genuinely would be mortified
- 28:03Speaker 4: if someone came to me and said, I'm doing the
- 28:04Speaker 4: same role as somebody else and I'm being paid.
- 28:08Speaker 5: Less by twenty five thousand dollars.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Yeah, we're not talking about a little amount of money.
- 28:13Speaker 4: We're talking about a lot of money. Yeah, Like, sorry,
- 28:16Speaker 4: do you not value me? Come on, I want to
- 28:19Speaker 4: see your answer to that, do you not value me?
- 28:22Speaker 4: Because that's real gross. But I feel like, no, it's
- 28:25Speaker 4: not too late. I would be asking for it. But
- 28:28Speaker 4: I wouldn't be as you said, Jess. I wouldn't be
- 28:31Speaker 4: making it about the person, not like, oh, Jess came
- 28:33Speaker 4: into the business and we had a chat, and she's
- 28:35Speaker 4: earning more and I think I should be earning more.
- 28:38Speaker 4: I think it would be sitting down and being like,
- 28:40Speaker 4: I've come across some information I'm currently doing. Let's call
- 28:43Speaker 4: it admints system, just because that's a good example. I'm
- 28:47Speaker 4: currently working in the capacity as an admin assistant and
- 28:50Speaker 4: I looked at this job that you put on seek
- 28:52Speaker 4: and I tick all the boxes, like I'm doing everything
- 28:56Speaker 4: in that job that you are seeking. As you know,
- 28:58Speaker 4: I've been here for more than three years, and you
- 29:01Speaker 4: and I would probably argue that I'm doing more than
- 29:04Speaker 4: my job because I've picked up some things along the
- 29:06Speaker 4: way and I actually have a lot of experience, so
- 29:09Speaker 4: like it takes me a lot less time to do
- 29:11Speaker 4: the job because I actually have that deep understanding of
- 29:14Speaker 4: you and the business, like I just know where everything
- 29:17Speaker 4: lives already, right, So pretty productive.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Do we agree on that? Yes, we agree on that. Great?
- 29:22Speaker 4: So why is that role more expensive? Tell me why
- 29:26Speaker 4: does that role pay more than twenty five thousand dollars?
- 29:29Speaker 4: Can I apply for that one instead? Because I would
- 29:33Speaker 4: actually prefer to have that job than the one I've
- 29:37Speaker 4: got because I think you've got lower expectations in that one.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Is that not right?
- 29:40Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 29:42Speaker 3: Is there like a training period?
- 29:43Speaker 4: Maybe I could do that for six months and have
- 29:45Speaker 4: a probation period and I can sit back after hours,
- 29:48Speaker 4: like I just I would be so salty. I do
- 29:52Speaker 4: not think it's too late. I would absolutely be going
- 29:55Speaker 4: back to your boss. I don't know if you would
- 29:57Speaker 4: be able to go about asking for like backpay.
- 30:02Speaker 5: But lucky and they feel really on the spot. Maybe
- 30:04Speaker 5: they will.
- 30:05Speaker 3: I mean, but as I always say, what's the worst
- 30:09Speaker 3: thing that could happen?
- 30:10Speaker 5: So true, don't get exactly.
- 30:13Speaker 4: And I had a friend slide into my DMS the
- 30:15Speaker 4: other day. Just like when I say friend, I mean
- 30:17Speaker 4: she's on the money community, remember, And this is so
- 30:20Speaker 4: funny because she's a client services manager for a mortgage
- 30:24Speaker 4: broking business.
- 30:25Speaker 3: And I know a lot about this.
- 30:27Speaker 4: She doesn't work for me, she's in a different state,
- 30:29Speaker 4: and I wasn't hiring at the time, but I would
- 30:31Speaker 4: have snapped her up if I could. And she said, VI,
- 30:34Speaker 4: I just I need to ask my boss for all
- 30:36Speaker 4: bosses probably hate me. I'm so sorry in advance, I
- 30:39Speaker 4: need to ask my boss for a raise because you know,
- 30:41Speaker 4: we're not doing this, this and this right. And she's
- 30:44Speaker 4: really pushing back on my flexible work hours and all
- 30:46Speaker 4: of this like stuff.
- 30:47Speaker 3: And I was like, why why are you working for
- 30:50Speaker 3: this person?
- 30:50Speaker 5: Again?
- 30:51Speaker 3: She was like, I don't know, Like the job market's
- 30:54Speaker 3: really hard at the moment.
- 30:55Speaker 4: And I was like, oh, totally, I totally see that,
- 30:58Speaker 4: but like you're in a job right now that is
- 31:00Speaker 4: very secure, and they're clearly quite reliant on you.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Have you been shopping? Have you gone to see what's
- 31:06Speaker 3: out there? Anyway?
- 31:08Speaker 4: Took one week new job, better pay, better hours, part time,
- 31:11Speaker 4: Ah snaps to her. Yeah, but what's the worst thing
- 31:15Speaker 4: that could happen? You go shopping and you didn't see
- 31:17Speaker 4: a job that you liked. Okay, well you've staying.
- 31:18Speaker 3: The one you're in.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Not a big deal.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Go shopping and you found something nicer to wear. Oh
- 31:23Speaker 3: that's so weird. It was free.
- 31:27Speaker 5: She didn't cost me anything anyway, what everybody else say?
- 31:30Speaker 3: They were obviously not impressed.
- 31:32Speaker 4: So first question we asked was would you feel comfortable
- 31:35Speaker 4: bringing this up with your boss or would it feel
- 31:37Speaker 4: too awkward? Seventy percent of you props to you, said
- 31:40Speaker 4: I am very comfortable having this conversation. Thirty percent of
- 31:44Speaker 4: you said no, way to awkward. Next question we asked
- 31:47Speaker 4: was do you think loyalty to a company actually pays
- 31:50Speaker 4: off anymore? Only ten percent of you said yes.
- 31:53Speaker 5: I'm very happy with that answer.
- 31:55Speaker 3: It's really sad. Yeah.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Then we said, be honest, would you say something or
- 32:00Speaker 4: just quietly start job hunting? And fifty six percent of
- 32:03Speaker 4: you said, you would say something, but then forty four
- 32:05Speaker 4: percent of you are silently job hunting. We then said
- 32:08Speaker 4: what is your two cents and same page as US queens.
- 32:12Speaker 4: So many of you said, just say something. If they
- 32:14Speaker 4: don't match it, then you can go shopping for a
- 32:16Speaker 4: new job. Next person said, talk to your boss, but
- 32:18Speaker 4: don't frame it because somebody else is paid more. But
- 32:21Speaker 4: rather you know what you're worth. Another person said, when
- 32:25Speaker 4: asking for a pay rise, you shouldn't mention the other
- 32:27Speaker 4: person's salary. Maybe they negotiate it.
- 32:30Speaker 5: I don't think whether or they negotiate it is relevant.
- 32:33Speaker 4: I agree. That's why I read it out on you.
- 32:36Speaker 4: I can walk just to like a ball and I
- 32:39Speaker 4: just know sheally yeah. Other people said I'd just say something,
- 32:44Speaker 4: and I'd also job hunt. Another person said, make a
- 32:49Speaker 4: case for a pay rise and then just start looking
- 32:51Speaker 4: somewhere else as a backup. A lot of people said
- 32:55Speaker 4: and like this was like a collective. Lot of people said,
- 32:57Speaker 4: like look into discrimination because they should be matching, like
- 33:01Speaker 4: for like roles.
- 33:02Speaker 6: Okay.
- 33:02Speaker 4: Another person said, stop job hunting because then you might
- 33:06Speaker 4: have something you can use this leverage.
- 33:09Speaker 5: That's also a very good point.
- 33:10Speaker 3: And then I will read one more.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Someone said, do both quietly, job hunt, have the conversation,
- 33:15Speaker 4: hope for the best, book.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Plan for the worst.
- 33:17Speaker 5: That's my kind of person. I think I love this.
- 33:20Speaker 3: I feel like that's a really great place to leave it.
- 33:22Speaker 4: There's I guess hope yet, my friends, And unfortunately no
- 33:26Speaker 4: more hope for this episode because it's actually finished. So
- 33:30Speaker 4: thank you for joining us this Friday drink, so for
- 33:32Speaker 4: being part of our community. Whether you are on your
