- 1:04Speaker 3: I get the absolute privilege of sitting down with one
- 1:07Speaker 3: of our incredible Shees on the Money community members and
- 1:10Speaker 3: talking to them all about their journey. Now let's jump
- 1:13Speaker 3: straight into it, because this week I got a message
- 1:15Speaker 3: and it sounded exactly like this high Shees on the Money.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I'm thirty one. I work in mining recruitment and have
- 1:22Speaker 3: spent many years rebuilding my confidence with money. I've gone
- 1:26Speaker 3: from worrying about every single dollar to saving aggressively investing
- 1:30Speaker 3: and planning a dream Thaighland trip and thinking seriously about
- 1:33Speaker 3: my future. I don't have a perfect money story. I
- 1:36Speaker 3: still battle with lifestyle spending and the pressure to buy property,
- 1:40Speaker 3: but I'm learning how to build wealth while actually enjoying
- 1:43Speaker 3: my life. I'd love to share the winds, mistakes, and
- 1:46Speaker 3: mindset changes that got me here money Doris. The second
- 1:49Speaker 3: I saw that, I was like, get on my show.
- 1:51Speaker 3: This is amazing. Welcome. Yeah, it's definitely a bit of
- 1:54Speaker 3: a shift mining recruitment. Like I'm just I'm not gonna
- 1:59Speaker 3: ask any questions now, we'll get into that in a
- 2:01Speaker 3: hot second. The question I'd like to ask people right
- 2:04Speaker 3: off the bat, what grade money dost would you give
- 2:06Speaker 3: your money habits if I asked you to give them
- 2:08Speaker 3: a grade from A through to F.
- 2:09Speaker 4: I'd probably give myself a B. I think I've come
- 2:12Speaker 4: a fair way. Yeah, all right, so let's learn a
- 2:15Speaker 4: little bit more about that. Can you tell me a
- 2:18Speaker 4: little bit more about your money story and the things
- 2:20Speaker 4: that have impacted it. I grew up in a house
- 2:22Speaker 4: where money was always like talked about, but like in
- 2:26Speaker 4: a negative way, Like my dad was sort of would
- 2:30Speaker 4: use it as a bit of a source of control. Yeah,
- 2:33Speaker 4: so like he wanted my mom to stay at home
- 2:35Speaker 4: and raise the children, and he referred to money as
- 2:38Speaker 4: like his.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Money, Oh delight me, not like the families.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Yeah, which was always like I guess kind of gave
- 2:46Speaker 4: me a little bit of a sort of worry about
- 2:48Speaker 4: like finances and all that sort of stuff. I'd see
- 2:50Speaker 4: what pressure my mom was under, like not to spend
- 2:53Speaker 4: money and things like that. Yeah, and yeah, I basically
- 2:56Speaker 4: just like saw how she was discouraged from chasing her
- 2:59Speaker 4: career and pursuing opportunities that came up to give her
- 3:02Speaker 4: financial independence.
- 3:03Speaker 3: So, oh my god, that's so rough. That is so rough.
- 3:07Speaker 3: And seeing that as a child, like I'm assuming at
- 3:11Speaker 3: an age that you were like relatively formative. You don't know,
- 3:14Speaker 3: that's wrong. You just go, well, it must be his money,
- 3:16Speaker 3: that must be how this works.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, And I think it had a huge impact
- 3:21Speaker 4: on me. And like the way that I saw money
- 3:23Speaker 4: when I first started earning money for myself, I kind
- 3:26Speaker 4: of went in the opposite direction of like how my
- 3:29Speaker 4: dad is with money, Like my dad's like wouldn't want
- 3:32Speaker 4: to spend money on anything, would be very very like
- 3:34Speaker 4: strict with money. So I just sort of went out
- 3:37Speaker 4: and spent all my money on like poes and you know,
- 3:42Speaker 4: going out with my friends and things like that.
- 3:44Speaker 3: It makes sense because you didn't have freedom before and
- 3:47Speaker 3: then all of a sudden you have freedom of choice
- 3:48Speaker 3: and you're like, oh my god, I can choose anything,
- 3:50Speaker 3: and I'm going too, and like that is so common,
- 3:53Speaker 3: Like I wish I could be like, oh no, that
- 3:55Speaker 3: doesn't really happen. Like usually if we've been constricted in
- 3:58Speaker 3: literally anything, it would be money, it could be food,
- 4:01Speaker 3: it could be like our lifestyle, it could be anything.
- 4:04Speaker 3: The second we go from being like no, you're not
- 4:07Speaker 3: being restricted to you can basically do anything and make
- 4:09Speaker 3: your own choices, we do get a little bit silly,
- 4:12Speaker 3: like we do, and we don't mean it but it's
- 4:15Speaker 3: our way of kind of like making sure that we
- 4:17Speaker 3: feel like we're in control.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Yeah exactly, I jumped off the other side of the
- 4:21Speaker 4: spectrum pretty much. And yeah, basically was like that up
- 4:26Speaker 4: until very recently, to be honest, And then I started
- 4:30Speaker 4: sort of having a bit of a mindset shift because
- 4:33Speaker 4: I'm getting older now, and yeah, my relationship with money
- 4:36Speaker 4: is definitely changed a lot thanks to you as well.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Oh so sweet.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I was like getting into saving and all
- 4:44Speaker 4: that sort of stuff, and then just like obviously listen
- 4:47Speaker 4: to a lot of podcasts and spread a few books
- 4:50Speaker 4: and things, and then yeah, my mindset sort of shifted,
- 4:52Speaker 4: and I realized that like obviously, building like wealth and
- 4:56Speaker 4: all that sort of stuff is actually really important because
- 5:00Speaker 4: that's actually you've got more control over your money if
- 5:03Speaker 4: you're doing that rather than spending it all on close.
- 5:07Speaker 3: And it's totally about learning this idea of delayed versus
- 5:11Speaker 3: instant gratification, because like, when you come out of a
- 5:13Speaker 3: situation that is rather restricted, whether you understand it or not,
- 5:17Speaker 3: instant gratification is what we default to because you've had
- 5:20Speaker 3: you know this, I would say delayed gratification, but like
- 5:23Speaker 3: not in a good way, like things have always been
- 5:25Speaker 3: pushed off for you, and you're like, well, this idea
- 5:28Speaker 3: of delayed gratification doesn't really work because like people say,
- 5:30Speaker 3: you can have it later or you know, not now,
- 5:32Speaker 3: and you're like, well that never happens, Like that never
- 5:34Speaker 3: comes true. So you go to, oh, those genes of
- 5:37Speaker 3: sale right now, and I'm going to have them right now,
- 5:39Speaker 3: and that makes me feel really good and my dopamine spikes,
- 5:42Speaker 3: and girl, I get it, like I really do. And
- 5:45Speaker 3: I got myself into a pickle because I was such
- 5:48Speaker 3: an instant like gratification queen. But like, don't get me wrong,
- 5:52Speaker 3: that felt good, didn't it. Like we don't have to
- 5:54Speaker 3: look back and say, oh, oh I was so bad. Girl.
- 5:59Speaker 3: I had a good time into debt, like I really did.
- 6:02Speaker 4: I enjoyed the five passls a week.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Oh my god, me too. But like at some point
- 6:07Speaker 3: you realize, hmm, this is actually stealing from future me.
- 6:12Speaker 3: What am I going to start doing? So tell me
- 6:14Speaker 3: about that mindset shift. You started listening to podcasts and
- 6:17Speaker 3: like picking up content and focusing on your savings. But like,
- 6:20Speaker 3: what made you go I actually want to do this
- 6:23Speaker 3: because like so many people want to but then, don't
- 6:26Speaker 3: I think.
- 6:27Speaker 4: A lot of it as well? Was I changed from
- 6:30Speaker 4: being in a job where I was making it week
- 6:33Speaker 4: to week, whereas like any little bits of money that
- 6:36Speaker 4: I had spare, I was like, oh, I might as
- 6:38Speaker 4: well just spend it. Yeah, And then obviously got better
- 6:42Speaker 4: jobs and better jobs, and then sort of was like, Okay,
- 6:45Speaker 4: well I need to actually start thinking about my future,
- 6:49Speaker 4: growing a bit older as well, and then sort of
- 6:52Speaker 4: realizing that other people were further along than me, like
- 6:56Speaker 4: I was just renting with some friends, and you know,
- 6:59Speaker 4: then I sort of realized, oh, property market, how am
- 7:03Speaker 4: I ever gonna like afford a home if I don't
- 7:06Speaker 4: like start to actually really think about money and savings
- 7:10Speaker 4: and all that sort of stuff totally.
- 7:12Speaker 3: And in the I don't know if I call them
- 7:14Speaker 3: letters or emails or whatever people send me. You said
- 7:18Speaker 3: that you know, you're still battling lifestyle spending and the
- 7:20Speaker 3: pressure to buy property, and I feel like that's really
- 7:23Speaker 3: relatable for our community. And you keep saying I'm getting older.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I'm I want to like smack you down a little
- 7:28Speaker 3: bit and be like, queen, you are only thirty one,
- 7:30Speaker 3: like please, like you are so young, but it's so
- 7:35Speaker 3: hard when you get to that like thirty year old age.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I feel, especially for people in twenty twenty six, you
- 7:42Speaker 3: get to about thirty and like it's like wealth starts
- 7:46Speaker 3: to seep out of people, so instead of being relatable
- 7:48Speaker 3: and having housemates and you're all kind of in the
- 7:50Speaker 3: same ship, Like you will start to see a few
- 7:52Speaker 3: friends buy a property and you're like, hold on, I
- 7:54Speaker 3: didn't even realize you were saving. And you start to
- 7:56Speaker 3: see a few friends like spend big on a Europe
- 7:58Speaker 3: trip and you're like, hold on, and I didn't realize
- 8:00Speaker 3: you could afford that. And you kind of realize that
- 8:03Speaker 3: people have been saving and investing in the background, and
- 8:05Speaker 3: you're like feel left behind in a way, but you're not,
- 8:09Speaker 3: like you're literally where you're supposed to be. But is
- 8:12Speaker 3: that kind of how it felt for you?
- 8:14Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, I felt like I was behind a lot.
- 8:18Speaker 4: But another thing would be I'm in a long term
- 8:21Speaker 4: relationship and my partner he owns his house and has
- 8:25Speaker 4: pretty much nearly paid off his mortgage.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Okay, she knows how to date.
- 8:31Speaker 4: He's a bit older than me. But I think like
- 8:33Speaker 4: as well, like bringing it back to like my parents,
- 8:36Speaker 4: and that situation is like I still want to buy
- 8:40Speaker 4: my own property because like I'm quite adavert to be
- 8:44Speaker 4: like independent and have my own financial freedom as well.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I'm obsessed. I can't tell you how much I love
- 8:52Speaker 3: it when I meet a woman who says I'm in
- 8:55Speaker 3: a long term relationship or I've got a boyfriend, but
- 8:57Speaker 3: like I don't want him to be part of my
- 8:59Speaker 3: b get financial goals because I just want to be
- 9:02Speaker 3: set up on my own. You just know that that's
- 9:04Speaker 3: a really healthy relationship. You just know that, like you
- 9:07Speaker 3: obviously have a good level of respect for each other,
- 9:10Speaker 3: because so many people are like, oh, my boyfriend just
- 9:12Speaker 3: doesn't want me to do it without him, and that's
- 9:14Speaker 3: not a problem. Like my husband, if I had said
- 9:17Speaker 3: I want to buy my own house, he would have
- 9:19Speaker 3: been like, Victoria, I feel left behind, Like I want
- 9:21Speaker 3: to be on this journey. But like, obviously there's a
- 9:23Speaker 3: bit of a difference in your relationship where you said
- 9:25Speaker 3: your partner is like ahead of you. You're like, I
- 9:27Speaker 3: just want to catch up and I want to be
- 9:29Speaker 3: on the same page, and I just is your partner
- 9:31Speaker 3: really supportive of that?
- 9:32Speaker 4: Yeah, No, he's happy for me to do it, like
- 9:35Speaker 4: he's setting the past like just save as much as
- 9:38Speaker 4: you can and potentially in the future, like depending on
- 9:41Speaker 4: obviously what happens with the property market and stuff, like
- 9:44Speaker 4: we might eventually buy something together or I might buy
- 9:47Speaker 4: something solo. But yeah, he's very very supportive of my
- 9:51Speaker 4: saving journey. Like he doesn't make me pay rent or anything,
- 9:55Speaker 4: so it's quite helpful.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Money with Thank you, sir. Oh love to see it
- 10:00Speaker 3: all right, tell me a little bit more. You know,
- 10:02Speaker 3: you said you went from worrying about every single dollar,
- 10:06Speaker 3: and I find that when people say that, there seems
- 10:09Speaker 3: to be like a tipping point because like, given your
- 10:12Speaker 3: money story in the way you grew up, you're like,
- 10:13Speaker 3: I'm just spending week to week and like I'm just
- 10:15Speaker 3: spending what's there because it didn't feel like enough, like
- 10:18Speaker 3: or I might be incorrect, but that's the vibe was
- 10:20Speaker 3: picking up from. You know what you said. You kind
- 10:22Speaker 3: of said that you'd spent all of your money and
- 10:26Speaker 3: then there was like a little bit left. So you're like,
- 10:28Speaker 3: what's the point, Yes, at what point did you go,
- 10:31Speaker 3: actually that small amount of money has power. I should
- 10:34Speaker 3: be like saving, I should be you know, putting that
- 10:37Speaker 3: aside for later. And did it feel fruitless at the start,
- 10:40Speaker 3: or like where did this come from to have such
- 10:42Speaker 3: a big mindset shift.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Oh, I kind of hit rock bottom, well not rock bottom,
- 10:46Speaker 4: but like I just had loads of outgoings and I
- 10:51Speaker 4: wasn't managing my money well, Like I was still going
- 10:53Speaker 4: out a fair a few times a week for like
- 10:56Speaker 4: meals and things. And then like I remember like being
- 10:59Speaker 4: on the phone to like phone company and like asking
- 11:02Speaker 4: for them to defer it every couple of weeks, and
- 11:05Speaker 4: I was just like, oh, this is like I don't
- 11:07Speaker 4: want to be in this situation where I'm living week
- 11:09Speaker 4: to week and like I'm stressed about money. Like I
- 11:12Speaker 4: remember crying to one of my supervisors at the time,
- 11:15Speaker 4: like about money and like if I could get a
- 11:18Speaker 4: pay rise, and I was like, I don't want to
- 11:19Speaker 4: be asking that based off like yeah, I want to
- 11:23Speaker 4: be asking based off merit, not because I feel like
- 11:26Speaker 4: I'm in financial trouble and stressed out. And yeah, that's such.
- 11:31Speaker 3: A stressful position. And so what was the first thing
- 11:35Speaker 3: you did? You obviously consumed a whole heap of content,
- 11:38Speaker 3: but did you open a separate savings account or did
- 11:40Speaker 3: you just go, oh, I'm going to say no to
- 11:43Speaker 3: the next dinner or like what was like, I guess
- 11:45Speaker 3: the small steps that took you towards this.
- 11:50Speaker 4: I opened a completely different savings account, so I have
- 11:54Speaker 4: my main account with Commonwealth, and then I have you
- 11:57Speaker 4: Bank as my savings, and then within that, I have
- 12:01Speaker 4: eight separate accounts where.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I I, oh, my goodness, you've gone hair. I love it.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I went a little bit crazy with separate accounts.
- 12:10Speaker 4: When I transfer on payday automatically into my savings, like
- 12:14Speaker 4: it's a rent situation, so that goes straight into my savings.
- 12:18Speaker 4: I'm saving one thousand, six hundred and fortnite into my savings.
- 12:22Speaker 3: How good's that?
- 12:24Speaker 4: And then I'll put in like, you know, fifty dollars
- 12:27Speaker 4: into like presents fifty dollars into whichever account, and then
- 12:32Speaker 4: like that would just build up, like I've got an
- 12:34Speaker 4: emergency fund as well, so stop it.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Past you would be like, who is this woman? What
- 12:40Speaker 3: has she done? And why is our money all so organized?
- 12:44Speaker 3: Like what do you mean it's not in our wardrobe?
- 12:47Speaker 4: Nah? It definitely feels good as well to have like
- 12:49Speaker 4: an emergency fund and stuff.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I'm obsessed. So tell me a little bit more about you.
- 12:54Speaker 3: You mentioned that you work in mining recruitment. So what
- 12:57Speaker 3: is that job and how much do you get paid
- 12:59Speaker 3: to do it?
- 12:59Speaker 4: Yeah, work as a recruiter for mining, So I essentially
- 13:03Speaker 4: employ all like mechanical trades in the mining industry and
- 13:08Speaker 4: I get paid as a commission based job. So this
- 13:12Speaker 4: financial year to be around one hundred and.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Thirty stop it? What's your base?
- 13:17Speaker 4: Ninety five? Oh?
- 13:18Speaker 3: How good's that? That's a nice amount of comms. So
- 13:21Speaker 3: tell me are the people that you're recruiting for? I
- 13:24Speaker 3: don't know what you meant. So you said, like for
- 13:27Speaker 3: mechanical trades. Obviously I understand that, but like, does that
- 13:30Speaker 3: mean that they have to be skilled or does that
- 13:32Speaker 3: mean that you know they're going in and being trained
- 13:35Speaker 3: or like what type of people are you looking for
- 13:37Speaker 3: and how hard are they defined?
- 13:39Speaker 4: Yeah, mostly have to be trained, so four year apprenticeship.
- 13:43Speaker 4: We do have a few people like service people which
- 13:46Speaker 4: are not trained, but we don't get too many on that.
- 13:50Speaker 4: It's more the actual apprenticeship.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Yeah, no, that makes sense.
- 13:53Speaker 4: They have to have completed a four year apprenticeship and
- 13:56Speaker 4: usually a couple of years experience behind them as well.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Get them on board.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I feel like that means you're as a recruiter probably
- 14:03Speaker 3: hustling pretty hard because like my best friend was a
- 14:07Speaker 3: recruiter for ten plus years and she worked more in
- 14:09Speaker 3: professional services and she got to lean on like LinkedIn
- 14:12Speaker 3: really heavily. But when you're working in like that more
- 14:15Speaker 3: mechanical field, they're not usually setting up a really shiny,
- 14:19Speaker 3: fancy LinkedIn for a recruiter to stumble across. So am
- 14:23Speaker 3: I right in assuming like the hustle is hard.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Yeah, not many mechanics have linkedins, So no, it's definitely
- 14:30Speaker 4: a lot of seek and gold calls and things.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, wow, how cool. So now tell me what's
- 14:36Speaker 3: your big money goal. Like you said that you have
- 14:39Speaker 3: your U bank set up, it's got eight different accounts,
- 14:42Speaker 3: but like, what are you working towards a couple?
- 14:46Speaker 4: So by the end of this year, I want to
- 14:48Speaker 4: have ninety K in my savings stop my main savings account,
- 14:52Speaker 4: just because yeah, I'm looking obviously potentially property, so just
- 14:56Speaker 4: sort of want to have that set in there. And
- 14:59Speaker 4: then I'm going on a trip to Thailand with my
- 15:01Speaker 4: partner at the end of the year as well, So
- 15:04Speaker 4: three weeks away in Thailand.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Sorry, oh my good nurse, Thailand is stunning. Tell me
- 15:09Speaker 3: how did you plan that trip with your partner? Like,
- 15:11Speaker 3: how are we funding it?
- 15:13Speaker 4: Well, he's not really a saver who works in mining,
- 15:16Speaker 4: so he gets like a fair amount of money each
- 15:19Speaker 4: month when he gets paid, so he's really saved. He'll
- 15:22Speaker 4: just be like, oh, I've got the money.
- 15:25Speaker 3: It must be nice. Can you can you just introduce
- 15:28Speaker 3: him to me? Oh that sounds bad, but can you
- 15:30Speaker 3: introduce him to me? Because I want to set up
- 15:32Speaker 3: he is like money in cash flow system, because my goodness,
- 15:35Speaker 3: the amount of people that I see in like these
- 15:38Speaker 3: mining jobs, which you can probably agree with me, they
- 15:41Speaker 3: could last forever, but often people want to tap out
- 15:44Speaker 3: but they haven't set themselves up financially well enough to
- 15:47Speaker 3: exit the industry, so that they're like stuck on the
- 15:49Speaker 3: rat race of mining. Can you tell him to get
- 15:52Speaker 3: his budget life together? Please?
- 15:55Speaker 4: Yeah, he definitely overdoes it on the over eats, but no,
- 15:59Speaker 4: he puts most of his money onto the mortgage, so
- 16:01Speaker 4: he's nearly paid it off, so that is not too
- 16:03Speaker 4: bad with money.
- 16:05Speaker 3: But he's also got high cash flow, so tell me.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Obviously he's going to fund it as he is, and
- 16:10Speaker 3: you've been saving for it. How bougie is this holiday, Like,
- 16:14Speaker 3: how did you make decisions around, Oh, what's a reasonable
- 16:17Speaker 3: price to pay for a hotel? Because they've really been
- 16:20Speaker 3: adding up or I'm finding that when I'm googling holidays
- 16:22Speaker 3: to go on, they're just adding up and hotels are
- 16:25Speaker 3: so much more expensive than I like have in my
- 16:27Speaker 3: head what they should be. Is that the same for
- 16:29Speaker 3: you while planning.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Yeah, it's definitely on the price er side, just because
- 16:32Speaker 4: we are going over Christmas in years.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you've really decided to ramp it up there.
- 16:38Speaker 4: But I already have like booked to them, just not
- 16:41Speaker 4: paid for them all yet, but I did go sort
- 16:43Speaker 4: of mid range. It is going to be a little
- 16:46Speaker 4: bit expensive. But I think we're probably in the next
- 16:49Speaker 4: few years looking at having kids, so I'm like, oh, well,
- 16:52Speaker 4: you know, it's a big go hard before Yeah.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Yeah, go hard, because like I'm telling you right now,
- 16:58Speaker 3: I had a baby. Obviously I have two of them.
- 17:01Speaker 3: We traveled to Europe with my son when he was
- 17:03Speaker 3: four months old, and that was incredible, But right now
- 17:06Speaker 3: here's two and there is absolutely no chance I'm getting
- 17:09Speaker 3: on an international flight with a two year old and
- 17:11Speaker 3: I don't know how long that's gonna last. And like
- 17:13Speaker 3: it's a season. I'm not mad about it, but like, yes,
- 17:16Speaker 3: live it up right now because when they're teeny tiny,
- 17:19Speaker 3: little sweet potatoes who can't move, holidaying with them is easy.
- 17:23Speaker 3: But once they have little opinions, absolutely not, once they
- 17:26Speaker 3: can run, absolutely not. I'm telling you right now, I
- 17:29Speaker 3: do not. Yeah, I do not want to just parent
- 17:32Speaker 3: overseas like that would not be a holiday for me.
- 17:35Speaker 3: It would be wasted.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly. It's been a hard work.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Yeah exactly. So I feel like you've got your head
- 17:41Speaker 3: screwed on their money. Dos. Let's go to a really
- 17:43Speaker 3: quick break because on the flip side, I want to
- 17:46Speaker 3: ask you a little bit more about this ninety thousand
- 17:48Speaker 3: dollars in savings, because that's incredibly impressive your investments, your debts,
- 17:52Speaker 3: and your personal insurance. So don't go anywhere, all right,
- 17:58Speaker 3: money dives. Do we back ninety grand in saving? God,
- 18:03Speaker 3: that's hectic. How did you get that much money in savings?
- 18:08Speaker 3: After saying I just I wasn't very good at money
- 18:11Speaker 3: and now I'm thirty one, queen, what.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Well, I'm not quite there yet. I want to be
- 18:16Speaker 4: at ninety by the end of the year. So it's
- 18:19Speaker 4: currently at sixty.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Okay, but okay, like reframe, it's at sixty so you've
- 18:24Speaker 3: got more than ten grand in savings. Like when you said, oh,
- 18:26Speaker 3: I just I've started saving, I just fully expected you
- 18:30Speaker 3: to be like, look, bebe you know, I've just really
- 18:32Speaker 3: started and I've got my first five grand in savings,
- 18:35Speaker 3: which would also be impressive, But you blew that out
- 18:38Speaker 3: of the water. How did you change your mindset so
- 18:41Speaker 3: dramatically to have such a large sum.
- 18:44Speaker 4: I've been trying to get behind like the under consumption
- 18:47Speaker 4: videos and things on TikTok because I definitely had a
- 18:51Speaker 4: spending problem, so very fair. Yeah, that's definitely helped a lot,
- 18:54Speaker 4: trying to shift my mind from like spending all my money,
- 18:58Speaker 4: so I think that makes me thing for me is
- 19:00Speaker 4: just like not spending so much money on clothes and things.
- 19:04Speaker 3: It's kind of humbling, isn't it When you fall onto
- 19:06Speaker 3: like that side of content and you're like, hey, like
- 19:09Speaker 3: these girls might be onto something. One of my team
- 19:11Speaker 3: members Brook you might have seen her on socials. She
- 19:14Speaker 3: does a lot of content like that and I'm just obsessed.
- 19:17Speaker 3: But even in our team group chat, she'll be like
- 19:20Speaker 3: literally who she is online is who she is in
- 19:23Speaker 3: person and she'll be like, guys, this is on sale
- 19:26Speaker 3: or hey, guys, I've been thinking about this top for
- 19:28Speaker 3: a month. Should it be my like one purchase of
- 19:30Speaker 3: the month, And we're all just like so behind her.
- 19:33Speaker 3: So when you fall into that, do you find that
- 19:35Speaker 3: your friends have started embracing that type of lifestyle as
- 19:38Speaker 3: well and being like oh yeah, queen get it?
- 19:40Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 19:41Speaker 3: Definitely obsessed?
- 19:42Speaker 4: All right?
- 19:43Speaker 3: Tell me about investing. Is that something that you've dabbled in?
- 19:47Speaker 3: Is that something that you do? If not, why not?
- 19:50Speaker 4: Yeah, And I've started investing. I started with the five
- 19:53Speaker 4: dollars from you with the chacas app.
- 19:55Speaker 3: You started with the five dollars from the chasas app,
- 19:57Speaker 3: which I think some money win.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I was good and yeah, just started on there.
- 20:03Speaker 4: I think I have two and a half thousand dollars
- 20:05Speaker 4: in there now. I think I'm going to go more
- 20:07Speaker 4: aggressive on that once I get to my savings goal.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Yeah that's fair.
- 20:13Speaker 4: I can tell you what it's invested in as well.
- 20:16Speaker 3: I would love the nitty gritty. I feel like some
- 20:18Speaker 3: people are like, oh, I just have two and a
- 20:19Speaker 3: half grand invested, and I'm like, Cuen, we want to
- 20:22Speaker 3: know the nitty gritty this is anonymous. What if you.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Picked Vanguard is one of them, the Australian Vanguard, I've
- 20:28Speaker 4: got Commonwealth NDQ, and then just a random rogue one
- 20:34Speaker 4: which is h l I Insurance Company or something.
- 20:39Speaker 3: What made you pick that?
- 20:41Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 20:42Speaker 3: You were just like, this is a good idea. I
- 20:44Speaker 3: love it.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Yeah, well it was one of the first ones. And
- 20:46Speaker 4: then I just was like, I don't know why I picked.
- 20:48Speaker 3: That, but that's okay. It's just part of the journey
- 20:52Speaker 3: when it came to picking. I guess NDP and Commonwealth
- 20:55Speaker 3: with they more strategic decisions or were they also think
- 20:58Speaker 3: that you were like, oh, they feel right, I'm just
- 21:00Speaker 3: going to pop them in and see how I go.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Commonwealth, I can't really remember the thought process behind that,
- 21:05Speaker 4: but with the NDQ, whe I listened to like a
- 21:07Speaker 4: lot of information about that and stuff first and did
- 21:10Speaker 4: a bit of research on it. So same with the Vanguard.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Very cool. And once you hit your ninety grand in savings,
- 21:17Speaker 3: what do you think you'll invest more in? Are you
- 21:19Speaker 3: going to go more down like the Vanguard to ETF
- 21:21Speaker 3: route and holding that or are there going to be
- 21:23Speaker 3: more individual shares like have you thought about the strategy
- 21:26Speaker 3: behind it, not.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Too much of this stage, but I think it would
- 21:28Speaker 4: probably be a more etf focus than individual shares. Love.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Now, tell me about debt. Do you have any debt?
- 21:35Speaker 3: Have you had any debt? What is that part of
- 21:37Speaker 3: your life?
- 21:38Speaker 4: Like? Yeah, so I had a car loan, but before
- 21:41Speaker 4: my money mind shift like changed, I wasn't even like
- 21:44Speaker 4: I was paying off the bare minimum of that. And
- 21:47Speaker 4: because when I started with a car loan, I was
- 21:49Speaker 4: working in hospitality, so I think my payments were like
- 21:52Speaker 4: eighty dollars a fortnight, which wasn't great looking back at
- 21:56Speaker 4: it now, I would have paid a lot of interest
- 21:58Speaker 4: on that. I think it was at like seven percent
- 22:01Speaker 4: or something the interest, and it took me like I
- 22:05Speaker 4: think it was like six seven years to pay off.
- 22:08Speaker 4: And then obviously as soon as my mindset changed and
- 22:11Speaker 4: just went and wiped that off.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Good girl. But at the same time, like when you
- 22:16Speaker 3: went and got a personal loan or you got a
- 22:18Speaker 3: car loan, I just feel like the marketing, the way
- 22:21Speaker 3: it's positioned to you, it's not hey, money diarist, like
- 22:25Speaker 3: eighty dollars is the bare minimum. You're meant to be
- 22:27Speaker 3: paying more to get ahead. They don't say that. They say,
- 22:30Speaker 3: oh girl, it's only going to cost you eighty dollars
- 22:33Speaker 3: a fortnight, and you go, oh, I've spent more or
- 22:35Speaker 3: less that It was fine, No worries. Like, they don't
- 22:38Speaker 3: tell you what you should be doing to put yourself
- 22:40Speaker 3: in the best possible position. They tell you what you
- 22:42Speaker 3: should be doing to maximize their profit, and that once
- 22:46Speaker 3: you learn that really annoys me.
- 22:49Speaker 4: I actually wanted to do more, but they told me
- 22:52Speaker 4: because I was in a casual hospol job, they wouldn't recommend. Oh.
- 22:56Speaker 3: I was just like, okay, oh, no worries, you must
- 22:58Speaker 3: be the experts here. Don't do that. We wouldn't want
- 23:01Speaker 3: to put you out. They made you spend more because
- 23:05Speaker 3: you were in a casual hospo job. It's even arguably
- 23:08Speaker 3: more important to get rid of it sooner because you
- 23:10Speaker 3: were paying more interests.
- 23:11Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 23:12Speaker 3: I am salty at them, all right, So that's gone.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Have you got any other types of debt?
- 23:17Speaker 4: I did a UNY degree, so I've got hex. I
- 23:20Speaker 4: think that's sitting around thirty now.
- 23:23Speaker 3: And is your unique degree something that you use now
- 23:26Speaker 3: for recruitment?
- 23:27Speaker 4: No, it's not necessary to have a degree for recruitment,
- 23:31Speaker 4: but I'm sure it helped me like get positions.
- 23:33Speaker 3: But yes, one hundred what did you do at UNI Major? Yeah,
- 23:38Speaker 3: that definitely would help you in the recruitment space, like
- 23:40Speaker 3: one thousand percent. I know they looked at your resume
- 23:43Speaker 3: and they're like, oh, she's going to know what's up
- 23:44Speaker 3: and how to ask the good questions and see what's
- 23:47Speaker 3: going on. Money darist, you are thirty one and you
- 23:50Speaker 3: own a one hundred and thirty grand ish a year.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Tell me what personal insurances have you set up?
- 23:56Speaker 4: Haven't done the personal insurances yet?
- 23:59Speaker 3: Cheeky of you've listened to a lot of podcast Is
- 24:01Speaker 3: it something that is on your radar? Not on your radar? Like,
- 24:04Speaker 3: tell me a bit more about that side.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it's definitely on the agenda. I'll probably look at
- 24:09Speaker 4: doing it with my partner, so we're both I'm not
- 24:12Speaker 4: sure if he has it, but just like go through
- 24:15Speaker 4: it and have that chat. We just currently have a housemate,
- 24:19Speaker 4: so I'm kind of waiting for him to move out
- 24:21Speaker 4: before we sort of like go through like everything in
- 24:25Speaker 4: our lives because we want to buy a whole bunch.
- 24:28Speaker 4: He kind of has like a you know, bachelor's pad,
- 24:30Speaker 4: vibe in terms of like the furniture and stuff. So
- 24:33Speaker 4: I want to like work out a plan of like
- 24:36Speaker 4: what we're going to do with everything like that, and
- 24:38Speaker 4: then I'll sit down.
- 24:39Speaker 3: And just do a whole financial life cleanse, reset, and
- 24:43Speaker 3: be like, Okay, what are we as a couple doing
- 24:46Speaker 3: moving forward?
- 24:47Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly like our plan is a couple. So it's
- 24:50Speaker 4: definitely going to include the personal insurances for sure.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. All right, tell me, I feel like
- 24:56Speaker 3: you've been gas lighting yourself, like low key, You're like
- 24:59Speaker 3: a weapon. You're like, I'm just to bee. But tell
- 25:01Speaker 3: me what do you think your best money habit is,
- 25:04Speaker 3: because I feel like there's going to be a good
- 25:05Speaker 3: one here.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Yeah. It would probably be a being able to actually
- 25:09Speaker 4: be set and treat my savings like a rent type
- 25:13Speaker 4: of payment and just automative payment into my savings. So
- 25:17Speaker 4: it kind of means that I'm just left with what
- 25:19Speaker 4: I have to spend and so of not going over that,
- 25:22Speaker 4: which is good.
- 25:23Speaker 3: If we went back and we talked to pass you
- 25:26Speaker 3: and said you automate your cash, now, do you think
- 25:29Speaker 3: that she would think that was restrictive or do you
- 25:32Speaker 3: think that she would think that was crazy or like
- 25:34Speaker 3: would she say, yeah, we needed that.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know. I probably would be like, I'm
- 25:38Speaker 4: not going to be able to like be able to
- 25:40Speaker 4: live if I did that back then, So I'd probably
- 25:42Speaker 4: would have been like it would have stressed me out,
- 25:44Speaker 4: like not feeling like I have money to fall back on.
- 25:47Speaker 4: But obviously now because I do have that emergency fund,
- 25:49Speaker 4: if something does come along, then I can go into that,
- 25:52Speaker 4: not my savings.
- 25:53Speaker 3: So yes, so fair, tell me, did you prioritize your
- 25:57Speaker 3: emergency fund or your savings first, like you can all
- 26:00Speaker 3: the egg.
- 26:00Speaker 4: I started the emergency fund first, but it wasn't much
- 26:04Speaker 4: at the beginning, like it was just fifty dollars a week,
- 26:07Speaker 4: and then I was like, oh, I could probably start
- 26:09Speaker 4: a savings account as well. I just thought that emergency
- 26:12Speaker 4: fund was like it was more important to have that
- 26:14Speaker 4: to fall back on if anything happened. And then obviously
- 26:17Speaker 4: savings was the property was in the in my mind
- 26:21Speaker 4: at that point, so I was like, okay, well we
- 26:23Speaker 4: need to do that too.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent. And I feel like that sets
- 26:27Speaker 3: up really good money habits because if you are somebody
- 26:31Speaker 3: who's been I guess, living week to week and that
- 26:33Speaker 3: doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have enough money. It
- 26:36Speaker 3: just means that you've been spending it all. But if
- 26:38Speaker 3: you are in that situation, it feels restrictive to start saving.
- 26:42Speaker 3: But then it also feels good once you have an
- 26:44Speaker 3: emergency fund that you can fall back on things and
- 26:47Speaker 3: be like, oh, I actually did save for that, and
- 26:50Speaker 3: I can, you know, not go into financial distress over this.
- 26:54Speaker 3: But then it also sets up this really great money
- 26:56Speaker 3: habit that you don't dip into your savings to pay
- 26:59Speaker 3: for things. And like, now do you feel like that
- 27:02Speaker 3: money you said there was about sixty grand sitting in
- 27:04Speaker 3: your savings, do you feel like I cannot touch that,
- 27:07Speaker 3: like that is not mine to touch unless we're doing
- 27:09Speaker 3: property stuff, or do you maybe dabble a little bit?
- 27:13Speaker 4: Yeah? No, I don't actually tend to take much out
- 27:15Speaker 4: of my savings. I have done in the past if
- 27:18Speaker 4: like maybe sometimes I forget about a payment or something,
- 27:22Speaker 4: so occasionally I've taken something out of there, but it's
- 27:25Speaker 4: I'm pretty consistent with keeping it in there.
- 27:28Speaker 3: I love it. Tell me what is your worst money habit?
- 27:31Speaker 4: Definitely convincing myself that experiences don't count spending, Like I've
- 27:37Speaker 4: been pretty bad lately. There's been a couple of concerts
- 27:40Speaker 4: and festivals and things that I've sent money on, and
- 27:44Speaker 4: we're going down south to like Wineries region for my birthday,
- 27:48Speaker 4: so pay for that recently as well.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Do you know what, it sounds like you're doing pretty
- 27:52Speaker 3: well regardless. So if that's your worst money habit, like Queen,
- 27:56Speaker 3: live it up, I think that that's working quite well
- 27:58Speaker 3: for you. At the start of this episode, you said,
- 28:01Speaker 3: b I think I'm a B. I didn't used to
- 28:03Speaker 3: be a bee, you know, I've come so far, but
- 28:05Speaker 3: now I'm a bee. Queen, What does an A look
- 28:09Speaker 3: like then, because I feel like you're in such a
- 28:12Speaker 3: good position for someone who's only thirty one.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I think maybe like to get myself up to
- 28:18Speaker 4: an A. Obviously, look at the personal insurances. And also
- 28:23Speaker 4: I'm currently putting fifty dollars of my Page Fortnite into
- 28:26Speaker 4: my Super.
- 28:27Speaker 3: Oh see, that's good.
- 28:29Speaker 4: I'd like to do a little bit more than that,
- 28:31Speaker 4: So just trying to build up that super a little
- 28:34Speaker 4: bit more as well.
- 28:35Speaker 3: We didn't touch on your super before. When we look
- 28:38Speaker 3: at your super account, what's sitting in there about seventy Okay,
- 28:41Speaker 3: so you're doing quite well for your age as well,
- 28:43Speaker 3: but you really want to kind of turbocharge that and
- 28:45Speaker 3: see it grow or are you feeling behind? Like why
- 28:49Speaker 3: is contributing to SUPER important at this point?
- 28:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I just want to obviously make sure that I
- 28:54Speaker 4: am set up for retirement. I think people don't really
- 28:58Speaker 4: like realize the value that. And also this next year
- 29:02Speaker 4: I've taken on like additional work and stuff, so I
- 29:05Speaker 4: think it will be above the next tax bracket and everything.
- 29:09Speaker 4: So just want to probably when I get bonuses, put
- 29:12Speaker 4: that into my SUPER so I don't get taxed as much.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it makes me. I mean, just to give a
- 29:18Speaker 3: little bit of context because when we talk about SUPER,
- 29:20Speaker 3: I love to give contexts because so many of us go, oh,
- 29:22Speaker 3: I've only got seventy grand girl, You've got so much,
- 29:25Speaker 3: But the average balance of a thirty year old woman
- 29:28Speaker 3: in Australia is between forty four and fifty eight thousand dollars.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Has you taking some time out of the workforce, because
- 29:35Speaker 3: you know, you said before at some point my partner
- 29:37Speaker 3: and I want to have kids, and you know we're
- 29:39Speaker 3: obviously going to go on this beautiful holiday before then,
- 29:42Speaker 3: have you thought about your superannuation plan during that period
- 29:45Speaker 3: of time.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Yeah, so obviously that's the thing that concerns me coming
- 29:49Speaker 4: from like the mindset that I have, Like I'm very
- 29:52Speaker 4: much like it sounds bad, not against men or something,
- 29:55Speaker 4: but like a bit distrusting, like of like, yeah, you
- 29:58Speaker 4: know someone turning around, like if you go on maternity
- 30:01Speaker 4: leave and like, oh, one, I'm making money and you're
- 30:04Speaker 4: not really making much money type of situation. So I
- 30:08Speaker 4: think it's been really important for me to kind of
- 30:10Speaker 4: like make sure that I will be contributing to that still.
- 30:13Speaker 4: So yeah, ideally be in a position where I get
- 30:16Speaker 4: super from like my employer. But I think they're changing
- 30:20Speaker 4: that super thing at the moment, aren't they.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Yeah, there are heaps of changes coming in and that
- 30:25Speaker 3: your parental leave will have like minimum subranuation payments on it.
- 30:29Speaker 3: But it's always a really good conversation to have now,
- 30:32Speaker 3: because I don't think you and your partner are ready
- 30:35Speaker 3: for that conversation, not in a bad way, just in
- 30:37Speaker 3: a you said, look, we're going on a holiday. My
- 30:39Speaker 3: partner actually lives in a bit of a like a
- 30:41Speaker 3: man cave vibe house, Like I just don't think talking
- 30:44Speaker 3: about hey, when we have babies. Are we going to
- 30:47Speaker 3: be contributing like together to my super? That can come later,
- 30:51Speaker 3: but it's nice to have those thoughts in your head
- 30:53Speaker 3: about what that looks like, because I actually.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Talked about oh you have Yeah, yeah, I'm very like,
- 30:59Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, what's my super going to look like?
- 31:02Speaker 4: And all that sort of stuff, So we definitely have
- 31:04Speaker 4: had conversations around it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:06Speaker 3: And is he open to the idea that contributing to
- 31:09Speaker 3: your super well you're on leave would be a constructive
- 31:12Speaker 3: thing to do.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely.
- 31:14Speaker 3: I'm obsessed. And also I'm gonna like make a grand
- 31:17Speaker 3: assumption that because he's in mining, he probably has a
- 31:20Speaker 3: really nice super account himself, so it kind of makes
- 31:22Speaker 3: sense to make that more equitable money. Diarist like, I
- 31:25Speaker 3: don't want to argue with you, but I do think
- 31:27Speaker 3: that you're higher than a b I feel like you're
- 31:30Speaker 3: just looking at things and going, oh, but there's so
- 31:32Speaker 3: much to do in the future, but like, right now,
- 31:34Speaker 3: you've got all your ducks in a row. So I
- 31:36Speaker 3: would say that is a type behavior. But I also
- 31:38Speaker 3: don't want to make you go, oh, I'm an a
- 31:41Speaker 3: if that's not aligning to your values. But my Queen,
- 31:45Speaker 3: this has been so good. Like, what do you mean
- 31:47Speaker 3: You've gone from being somebody who said, you know, I
- 31:50Speaker 3: didn't really have a lot of confidence with money. I
- 31:52Speaker 3: used to worry about every single dollar and now I'm
- 31:54Speaker 3: like aggressively saving and investing and I'm going to go
- 31:57Speaker 3: on a dream holiday. And you know, my money story
- 32:00Speaker 3: isn't perfect, but you know what it is. It's constructive
- 32:02Speaker 3: and I'm learning to build wealth. Like, girl, I could
- 32:05Speaker 3: not ask for more from somebody in your position, And like,
- 32:10Speaker 3: you've got sixty grand in your savings and you're projecting
- 32:12Speaker 3: that in the next what less than six months, you're
- 32:16Speaker 3: going to add another thirty grand to that. That is
- 32:19Speaker 3: elite behavior. Like I am just so excited for you
- 32:23Speaker 3: to achieve that. Can you please message me when that happens, Like,
- 32:27Speaker 3: I'm just I'm so excited for you, and I'm just
