- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. Hey guys, it's John from talk About That.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I'm excited today to bring to you, guys some of
- 0:16Speaker 2: our favorite past clips from holiday episodes of the podcast.
- 0:19Speaker 2: So sit back and enjoy it with your family. We
- 0:22Speaker 2: wish you a merry Christmas and obviously, as always, first
- 0:25Speaker 2: a word from our actual sponsors.
- 0:36Speaker 1: We can talk about a lot. We've talked a lot
- 0:38Speaker 1: about what our favorite Christmas Carol is? What is your
- 0:41Speaker 1: lead favorite Christmas Carol? I think I've taken a flat
- 0:44Speaker 1: from this before.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm not a big little drummer boy fan.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We've talked about that, maybe that it's a little But
- 0:52Speaker 1: then you said that I'm a poor boy too. I
- 0:55Speaker 1: do you like that? Youat? I like that line? Yeah,
- 0:58Speaker 1: because I am. Well that's in that song, so by
- 1:01Speaker 1: proxy you like that song. By the transitive property of drumming,
- 1:05Speaker 1: you like that song. Well, I didn't get to tell
- 1:07Speaker 1: you what my Lea's favorite Christmas song was. Oh, I
- 1:09Speaker 1: thought you already said it. No, that's true.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I wasn't.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, are you just say what you say? And then
- 1:13Speaker 1: your move? I was like that topic exhausted itself. I
- 1:18Speaker 1: think everything's been said. Yah, my least favorite and I
- 1:21Speaker 1: was gonna play it, but you said we'll get muted
- 1:23Speaker 1: if we play the song clip. Yeah, we will get
- 1:25Speaker 1: taken down. Yep. But I heard it again the other
- 1:28Speaker 1: day and I was like, how did this ever become
- 1:31Speaker 1: a hit? Like, evidently it was a hit. I know
- 1:33Speaker 1: what this song is? No, you don't. Can I say
- 1:35Speaker 1: what I think it is? What is it? What do
- 1:36Speaker 1: you think it is? Christmas Shoes? No, because that's also
- 1:39Speaker 1: bugs me. No, but the sentimentality songs don't bug me.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It's when you take a version of a popular song
- 1:45Speaker 1: and you put your spin on it and you ruin
- 1:48Speaker 1: it the way that this person did. It's Barbaris Streisand's
- 1:52Speaker 1: version of jingle Bells. Have you heard it? No, it's
- 1:55Speaker 1: one where she goes jingle bells, jingle bell jingle all
- 1:57Speaker 1: the way old what fund indes do, run in r
- 1:59Speaker 1: sip and say jing jingle. But it's crazy. Oh, it gets.
- 2:03Speaker 1: It's like a spoken word. It get, but it gets
- 2:05Speaker 1: progressively where you jingle jingle, jang jung jing. It gets
- 2:08Speaker 1: so crazy. It is like it's like it's a panic
- 2:12Speaker 1: attack set to music. Trumpets are coming in. I want
- 2:16Speaker 1: to I'll play for you off air and you will
- 2:18Speaker 1: be just it's it'll floor you. It's a it's two
- 2:21Speaker 1: minutes long.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I'm just craziness, just like they just just jumbled everything
- 2:25Speaker 2: in that was possible.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's so offbeat and weird and jazzy.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I was in a restaurant yesterday with my wife and
- 2:32Speaker 2: they had a they had a weird Christmas playlist.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it sounded like that.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Like it was like like, if I hear Christmas music,
- 2:39Speaker 2: I want it to be either inspirational like E said,
- 2:43Speaker 2: Christmas shoes that's the other one, that it's an email
- 2:47Speaker 2: forward manipulative yeah right, or I want it to be
- 2:51Speaker 2: like festive, well done. But you know it brings you
- 2:54Speaker 2: that because I really do believe that Christmas songs fall
- 2:56Speaker 2: into probably only like five categories.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Five well, I mean like.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Pop songs if you really listen to it in Christmas,
- 3:04Speaker 2: there are themes that get rewritten in every single pop song.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and it is that.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I don't want anything for Christmas except you, okay, like
- 3:14Speaker 2: Santa just needs to wrap you under the tree.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I don't need any presents, okay. And the truth is
- 3:20Speaker 1: this is all a farce, Like if you just how
- 3:23Speaker 1: many categories have you said so far, that's two okay,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and so it's like.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Three spiritual, religious, fine in the mistletoe, Yeah, like I
- 3:33Speaker 2: want to be in the Misslete. Four I don't want
- 3:36Speaker 2: to go out tonight. It's it's the introvert Christmas song. Yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 2: we don't want to go anywhere, like Dave.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Barnes is a song like that.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Obviously there's the cold outside, don't leave my house write
- 3:46Speaker 2: all these songs. Yeah, I don't want to leave. I
- 3:48Speaker 2: just want to stay here and dance and do whatever
- 3:50Speaker 2: with you. That's all I want for Christmas. But it
- 3:52Speaker 2: goes back to that idea. But it's that I don't
- 3:54Speaker 2: but it's very much though, let's not leave. The weather's bad. Yeah,
- 3:57Speaker 2: maybe someone is anyway. And then yeah, the fifth is
- 4:01Speaker 2: like religious sort of idea, our time we all come together.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I've got a sixth category, right. It is the ones
- 4:07Speaker 1: that kind of like make Sannah a creepy you know,
- 4:13Speaker 1: like attractive character, hurry down the chimney tonight. But it's
- 4:17Speaker 1: like what are you You know what I'm saying, Like
- 4:18Speaker 1: it's like Santa Baby, I've been a really good girl,
- 4:21Speaker 1: Like come on, we're better than what are you doing? Yeah? Stop? Yeah,
- 4:25Speaker 1: the dude. He's a saint. He's like fifteen hundred years old. Yes, Yeah,
- 4:30Speaker 1: he's a saint. And he's married. Yes, he's got missus Claus.
- 4:34Speaker 1: What are you doing? Yeah, I mean there's that raw
- 4:37Speaker 1: good looks that he carries. Yes, we all have had
- 4:40Speaker 1: our moments of weakness, and you see a picture of
- 4:42Speaker 1: Saint Nick and you're like, Okay, he has a rugged
- 4:45Speaker 1: handsomeness to him.
- 4:46Speaker 2: He's been doing sit ups. I don't think anyone's ever since. No, No,
- 4:50Speaker 2: I just I think we and you should write a
- 4:52Speaker 2: Christmas song.
- 4:53Speaker 1: We need to incorporate all six categories. Yes, and then
- 4:57Speaker 1: it's guaranteed to be a hit. Yeah, it's full proof.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I mean it really would.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I'm really impressed with the people who keep writing around
- 5:04Speaker 2: those themes and find a way to say it differently.
- 5:07Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. What's saying with any love song? Really,
- 5:09Speaker 1: it's like you're you're desperate for this person. How do
- 5:13Speaker 1: you say it in a different way than a million
- 5:14Speaker 1: people already have?
- 5:15Speaker 2: Right, No, that's you know, there may be another category,
- 5:18Speaker 2: by the way, Okay, it's the I just want to
- 5:23Speaker 2: I need to get to you for Christmas.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Right, it's the I know I can't get home for Christmas, which, yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Tory Kelly, by the way, her Christmas album, Yeah, unbelievable.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You know, a great vocal. But she has a song
- 5:35Speaker 2: called twenty fifth. It's that, you know, the only thing
- 5:41Speaker 2: that's on my list is to hold you on the
- 5:42Speaker 2: twenty fifth. Okay, you know, take that, take the mid
- 5:45Speaker 2: not fly, no more solid nights. You'll be by my side.
- 5:47Speaker 2: So it's bringing in those Christmas the Christmas imagery, but
- 5:51Speaker 2: the truth is all I really want. But if you
- 5:53Speaker 2: just show up and people expect presents, you're like, look,
- 5:56Speaker 2: I thought we were singing the song all I wanted,
- 5:58Speaker 2: all you wanted was yeah, I wanted that in a
- 6:01Speaker 2: diamond or whatever, right, yeah, a PlayStation.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Or the here's one. It's uh, you know, I'll be
- 6:09Speaker 1: home for Christmas. You can count on me. Then he
- 6:12Speaker 1: has demands, have please have snow mistletoe presence under the tree. Yeah,
- 6:18Speaker 1: he didn't do any of that. He's got demands. He's like,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I'll be home, but you better do this. Yeah. Then
- 6:21Speaker 1: he wraps up the song by saying, if only in
- 6:24Speaker 1: my dreams, You're like, whoa, whoa, whoa, buddy, we did
- 6:28Speaker 1: all this work. We got all this stuff together for
- 6:31Speaker 1: you kidding, checked your stupid boxes. I actually thought of
- 6:35Speaker 1: this the other day. You're like, well, look, it's a
- 6:37Speaker 1: dream that I could even flights are maybe it's cold
- 6:41Speaker 1: outside listen. I thought the same thing of the day.
- 6:44Speaker 1: There's a lot you're asking them to do. This is like,
- 6:47Speaker 1: this is the s keyest family member. Yeah, this is
- 6:51Speaker 1: what it's like to have kids. When your kids say, look,
- 6:53Speaker 1: i'm gonna bee. You know that's coming for y'all, where
- 6:56Speaker 1: you know your mood, your entire world is gonna wrapped
- 7:00Speaker 1: up in whether or not Sadie comes home for Christmas
- 7:03Speaker 1: very soon, and you're gonna you're gonna be like she
- 7:07Speaker 1: called today. You're gonna be it's gonna be heartbreaking. You
- 7:11Speaker 1: don't do this to me. I think. I think about
- 7:14Speaker 1: it like I gotta go see the folks. I know
- 7:17Speaker 1: how long do I have to stay before it's enough?
- 7:19Speaker 1: Already Dad does that weird thing, the same stories. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: just we gotta eat ham. I don't know. And then
- 7:28Speaker 1: she's gonna be like I got I'm gonna go hang
- 7:30Speaker 1: out with my friends. You're gonna be like, you're gonna
- 7:31Speaker 1: leave so soon. I've been here for six hours. You're
- 7:33Speaker 1: gonna be heartbroken. It's never gonna be enough. Yeah, anyway,
- 7:38Speaker 1: that's coming for you. Thank you, good bye. Hey.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I did get invited to an interesting party the other day. Yeah,
- 7:43Speaker 2: they called it. It was in the neighborhood. They called
- 7:45Speaker 2: it a progressive Christmas party. Okay, So I showed up.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I was like, I'm not sure about this. I thought,
- 7:51Speaker 2: are we all just gonna vote Democrats? What's the deal?
- 7:54Speaker 2: It wasn't that at all.
- 7:55Speaker 1: That's where you go from place to place, right.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yeah, So if you guys hear about this, it's okay
- 7:59Speaker 2: to go because it's not really what you think.
- 8:02Speaker 1: No, yeah, it's different.
- 8:04Speaker 2: So, uh today our quote it is Christmas comes from
- 8:13Speaker 2: John Leo, and John Leo says, I thought for Christmas,
- 8:17Speaker 2: I mean I had a bunch of history stuff I
- 8:18Speaker 2: wanted to say and all that, but I mean I
- 8:20Speaker 2: could just see everyone's eyes closing over because it's Christmas time.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Joey, it talk about that.
- 8:25Speaker 2: He says this, and I thought this was key for
- 8:27Speaker 2: maybe for you to reflect upon and back to your
- 8:29Speaker 2: theme of me and parenting. The principal advantage of the
- 8:34Speaker 2: non parental lifestyle is that on Christmas Eve. You need
- 8:37Speaker 2: not be struck dumb by the three most terrifying words
- 8:40Speaker 2: that the government allows to be printed on any product,
- 8:43Speaker 2: which is, I don't know, some assembly required. Oh right, yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 2: this is a real thing.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Like I can tell you this just canna say batteries
- 8:54Speaker 1: not included.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Maybe, Oh, that's another one one, some assembly required. I
- 8:58Speaker 2: can remember when he said he was a little and
- 9:00Speaker 2: you put her to bed.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Because you can't all night putting. It's hours at least.
- 9:04Speaker 1: The little cam screws and all the the thing I
- 9:07Speaker 1: remember the most wood dowels and glue, a drop of
- 9:09Speaker 1: glue and a wood dowel, the plastic kitchen. The kids
- 9:14Speaker 1: like the little kitchens.
- 9:15Speaker 2: And I'm telling you, it's like it's all in the things.
- 9:19Speaker 1: You have to break it out of. It's little.
- 9:22Speaker 2: It's in a yeah, what do you call a template, basically,
- 9:25Speaker 2: and you have to break it or a mold to
- 9:27Speaker 2: break it out of the stems.
- 9:29Speaker 1: You'd think that'd be easy, Johnny was not. Your hands
- 9:33Speaker 1: were nubs, bloody nubs by Christmas morning. And then Christmas
- 9:36Speaker 1: that's the other thing.
- 9:37Speaker 2: You go to the grandparents and the kids open up
- 9:39Speaker 2: all this stuff and it all requires assembly.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Yeah, and so now they'd an assembly because the grandparents
- 9:44Speaker 1: didn't assembly it. So they're just like, good live, Yeah,
- 9:46Speaker 1: it's exactly what it is. Yeah.
- 9:48Speaker 2: So you're sitting there and the kids are all getting
- 9:50Speaker 2: restless because it takes an hour to get their present together.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Did they get Sadie stuff that they knew you wouldn't
- 9:55Speaker 1: approve of? Did they do that trick? Ever?
- 9:57Speaker 2: They didn't, but Uncle Greg did. Laar's brother. One time
- 10:02Speaker 2: he bought her a live goldfish in a bag. I'm
- 10:05Speaker 2: not even sure it was Christmas. He did it and
- 10:07Speaker 2: he looked at me like, yeah, I'm doing this.
- 10:09Speaker 1: That's great, And I was like, you go get a
- 10:11Speaker 1: whole bunch of stuff we had to go buy.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yes. On the way home, she named the fish Harry.
- 10:16Speaker 2: She was real little right, And then Harry obviously Harry
- 10:21Speaker 2: didn't make it not even home.
- 10:24Speaker 1: No, he made it home.
- 10:24Speaker 2: But we were in the tank and after I spend
- 10:26Speaker 2: one hundred dollars and we knew this wasn't gonna last.
- 10:29Speaker 1: But we couldn't tell her. What do you mean you
- 10:31Speaker 1: couldn't tell her? She still thinks Harry's alive.
- 10:33Speaker 2: No not, but we kept no, we kept the ruse
- 10:37Speaker 2: going a while, so I think he was like Harry
- 10:39Speaker 2: number five before we finally were like.
- 10:42Speaker 1: You kept moving another fish in. Yeah, like she jig
- 10:44Speaker 1: is up? Is she finding out now on the air? No,
- 10:47Speaker 1: she knows.
- 10:47Speaker 2: We finally like, look, Harry went to fish Heaven or whatever,
- 10:51Speaker 2: which ironically is down the toilet. But yeah, it's okay.
- 10:54Speaker 2: It's a different portal to get there than we're normally
- 10:57Speaker 2: used to. Yeah, but yeah, And I was like, I'm
- 10:59Speaker 2: not putting any more fish. And I told my brother
- 11:01Speaker 2: in law. I was like, look, I'm just gonna buy your.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Kids a fish. He's like, that's cool. I'll just let
- 11:05Speaker 1: him die. I don't care. I mean, he was like
- 11:07Speaker 1: hardcore about it. I was like, oh, yeah, well, I
- 11:10Speaker 1: can't play that game if you're not going to play back.
- 11:12Speaker 1: So if you flush a fish and it goes to
- 11:14Speaker 1: it feels like hell. You know what I'm saying, that's
- 11:16Speaker 1: how fish go to hell. Well you can't say that, Listen.
- 11:21Speaker 1: My fish was all dogs go to heaven, all fish
- 11:24Speaker 1: go to hell? That fish listen, Why are you assiming
- 11:26Speaker 1: my fish was good?
- 11:27Speaker 2: But maybe you're saying you're sending it back out into
- 11:29Speaker 2: where it came from into the ocean, because all the
- 11:32Speaker 2: pipes eventually look Johnny, like all roads lead to Rome,
- 11:36Speaker 2: all toilet pipes lead to the ocean, and.
- 11:38Speaker 1: That's that's heaven. For I was a match. Have you
- 11:41Speaker 1: ever seen finding nemo? It seemed like heaven. I mean,
- 11:45Speaker 1: it's better than my little tank and her room pipe
- 11:48Speaker 1: that goes up that you could be like, here's where
- 11:50Speaker 1: Harry goes and he goes into like a tube system
- 11:52Speaker 1: and he just flies over into the yard and the
- 11:57Speaker 1: dog eats him. Yes, yeah, that's fish heaven. Yeah, you
- 12:01Speaker 1: I don't want your dogs. You bought five fish to
- 12:05Speaker 1: completely deceive your daughter. Yeah, that's amazing. That's that's Christmas.
- 12:10Speaker 1: That's parenting right there, Johnny. What is Christmas if it's
- 12:14Speaker 1: not about the space of time between these fish? Like
- 12:18Speaker 1: how long were the life spans of these fish?
- 12:20Speaker 2: They might last a couple of weeks something I kept
- 12:23Speaker 2: it going a while, man, Funny, I mean, what was
- 12:27Speaker 2: I supposed to do?
- 12:28Speaker 1: I don't know. There was always something.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I think she was potty training me with a time,
- 12:31Speaker 2: like there was always some reason not to add insult
- 12:34Speaker 2: to injury. We're already in a in a moment of
- 12:36Speaker 2: change for her it's difficult, you know, and you say
- 12:38Speaker 2: what you want to say.
- 12:39Speaker 1: It's a big deal to kids.
- 12:42Speaker 2: So it's like my uncle, sorry, her uncle set her
- 12:45Speaker 2: up with this living creature now knowing that the joke
- 12:49Speaker 2: would be that I would have to do this.
- 12:51Speaker 1: That's well, there's always the joke about the drum set
- 12:53Speaker 1: or the keyboard, right, you know, something that's loud and noisy. Yeah,
- 12:58Speaker 1: but some people want that for their kid. They want
- 13:00Speaker 1: their kid to be musical because you can teach your
- 13:02Speaker 1: kid all kinds of creative things if they But drums
- 13:04Speaker 1: are a lot. Yeah, drums.
- 13:07Speaker 2: It might work for kids today because they can put
- 13:09Speaker 2: headphones on and play.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Along to something electronic ones.
- 13:12Speaker 2: But well even then if you can still hear, but
- 13:14Speaker 2: at least they're playing to something. Yeah, but a drum
- 13:17Speaker 2: is generally not played by it myself what I'm.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Saying, except the case a little drummer boy, which well,
- 13:23Speaker 1: we don't know that there weren't.
- 13:25Speaker 2: You know, we know that the Oxen Lamb kept time,
- 13:29Speaker 2: but it doesn't indicate they used instruments.
- 13:31Speaker 1: They may were just using a metronome if that was
- 13:34Speaker 1: one of our doctrines like that, the oxen Lamb kept
- 13:37Speaker 1: time we have all this other stuff. It's like totally
- 13:40Speaker 1: normal and normal ish. And then we get to and
- 13:43Speaker 1: of course we know that the oxen lamb kept perfect.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Time, right, and I can just I just see a
- 13:48Speaker 2: little hoof like just moving up and down, like hey.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And we know that no crying he makes.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's bad theology. Yeah, I mean he's gonna cry
- 13:56Speaker 2: with a drum set. Yes, I mean Mary would have cried. Yeah,
- 14:00Speaker 2: they didn't say no crying she made, That's true. She
- 14:03Speaker 2: was highly and Joseph, what kind of dad lets a
- 14:05Speaker 2: kid come do this? Like, hey, I remember you in
- 14:09Speaker 2: the hospital. I was very protective, like, no, if somebody
- 14:12Speaker 2: come to wake everybody up, like hey, is this necessary?
- 14:14Speaker 1: No?
- 14:15Speaker 4: And the doctor's like I'm the doctor, Yeah it's necessary.
- 14:38Speaker 1: John. This week, eighteen forty three, Charles dickens classic Christmas tale,
- 14:45Speaker 1: A Christmas Carol is published. Miser Ebenezer Scrooge is visited
- 14:50Speaker 1: by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley
- 14:54Speaker 1: and the spirits of Christmas past, present, and yet to come.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Dickens wrote the tale. I want you to guess how
- 15:01Speaker 1: long it took him to write it. Yeah, six weeks?
- 15:09Speaker 1: Are you serious? That's your guess. Yeah, it took six weeks,
- 15:14Speaker 1: is that right? Yeah? There you go. This is like
- 15:16Speaker 1: you go, I think I could write something about that
- 15:18Speaker 1: classic like that. I think it would take me about
- 15:20Speaker 1: six weeks. Weeks. Well, I was thinking I was gonna
- 15:23Speaker 1: say forty five days, but forty forty two days. Forty
- 15:27Speaker 1: two days. If I was as brilliant as Charles Dickens,
- 15:30Speaker 1: I think this was one of the ones he was like,
- 15:33Speaker 1: I think I've read about this before. I need what
- 15:34Speaker 1: we need to do more research. But I believe I
- 15:36Speaker 1: remember this being one of the books that he was
- 15:38Speaker 1: just like trying to just spit out something. Really there
- 15:41Speaker 1: was a Christmas and it's just the most popular well
- 15:44Speaker 1: I mean happened some yeah, yeah, and Oliver Twist was
- 15:47Speaker 1: an Oliver twist Dickens. I mean yeah, but I think
- 15:49Speaker 1: it was just most like, here's a Christmas thing, and
- 15:51Speaker 1: I was like, now it's going on to be a
- 15:53Speaker 1: which you just never know, man, you never know. I
- 15:56Speaker 1: hope that that happens with something that we do. Yeah.
- 15:58Speaker 2: We were just trying to wear accidentally right, Yeah. I
- 16:01Speaker 2: like that I'm accidentally a failure all the time. I
- 16:03Speaker 2: would love to accidently be a success, that'd be great.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Yeah, you're like a Forrest Gump, but for failure. Yeah yeah,
- 16:12Speaker 1: like you're not super smart and you stumble around, but
- 16:15Speaker 1: then you fall to the ground. You don't stumble into
- 16:20Speaker 1: like great scenarios. It's just like, oh, John fell into
- 16:23Speaker 1: the waiting pool again, right, it seemed like he should
- 16:26Speaker 1: have succeeded when he was so close and then he
- 16:30Speaker 1: shot himself in the foot again. I know.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Actually wrote in an introduction like I was talking about
- 16:35Speaker 2: how I try to do too many things right, that
- 16:38Speaker 2: things that shouldn't all work together, but they end up
- 16:40Speaker 2: maybe working together. It's like I'm like Forrest Gump minus
- 16:43Speaker 2: the people skills.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, you don't but you'll get there. I
- 16:47Speaker 1: have every confidence in them. I appreciate that. Are you
- 16:49Speaker 1: a fan of Christmas, Carol? I think it's the Yeah,
- 16:52Speaker 1: it's just it's not all the great lessons and all
- 16:54Speaker 1: the things. Yeah ghosts, yeah, which I mean, come on, yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 1: I uh. I remember. It is odd too that like
- 17:04Speaker 1: he wakes up and he realizes like it hasn't come,
- 17:07Speaker 1: you know, it hasn't come, right, there's still a chance
- 17:10Speaker 1: to and so there's that hopefulness there. I like that.
- 17:14Speaker 2: You know, Yeah, I like it too. But you know
- 17:19Speaker 2: what I watched the other night. That's that's similar. It's
- 17:21Speaker 2: the modern It's it reverses a little bit. It's a
- 17:24Speaker 2: wonderful life.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Oh sure, have you watched the colorized version?
- 17:27Speaker 2: No, Okay, I didn't realize I had one, And I
- 17:30Speaker 2: actually had a second. I was doing some some chores
- 17:33Speaker 2: and stuff and had it on in the background because
- 17:35Speaker 2: also the.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Colors version, it's like it's a bit much. It's like, whoa,
- 17:37Speaker 1: That's what I thought too, you know, there's a little
- 17:39Speaker 1: too green. Like the Andy grip of the show.
- 17:41Speaker 2: When they went to color it was like not great, right,
- 17:44Speaker 2: something that wasn't great about it.
- 17:45Speaker 1: But this one I thought it was so much better.
- 17:47Speaker 1: It's one of the first times I felt that it
- 17:48Speaker 1: was so much better. It's a new, souped up version
- 17:50Speaker 1: of the colorization. Probably it's just.
- 17:52Speaker 2: The algorithm knows from the tint of the black and
- 17:55Speaker 2: white what that color actually wash, and it looks very
- 17:58Speaker 2: I mean, it actually is what the color was.
- 18:00Speaker 1: They're not recoloring it.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's like it was just so much richer
- 18:05Speaker 2: to me because there's a lot happening in it, and
- 18:06Speaker 2: I cried at the end of the movie Alarm in
- 18:08Speaker 2: front of me.
- 18:08Speaker 1: But I I she's not a fan of It's a
- 18:10Speaker 1: wonderful life. I fall apart at these Christmas commercials. Yeah,
- 18:14Speaker 1: we need to talk about in the next episode because
- 18:16Speaker 1: it's a lot. And Curry goes, why do you watch these?
- 18:19Speaker 1: Because I'll go find them. You know, the same ones
- 18:22Speaker 1: get repurposed every year on Twitter and stuff. You'll see
- 18:25Speaker 1: and I go, and she goes, why are you watching this?
- 18:27Speaker 1: And I'll look over and I'll look over at her
- 18:29Speaker 1: and I'm like just welling up, and she's like, jez,
- 18:33Speaker 1: she cries too, but you know, oh laarer cress stuff
- 18:35Speaker 1: all the time. Yeah, but this is not I was like,
- 18:37Speaker 1: she doesn't like that movie.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I was like, you, you can't say this is not
- 18:41Speaker 2: a great movie, Like, oh no, the rest of the
- 18:43Speaker 2: world is spoken on this, right. You can say you
- 18:45Speaker 2: don't agree with the rest of the world, but you
- 18:47Speaker 2: can't say that it's not good.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Right, come on now? Anyway, Yeah, you know I like
- 18:52Speaker 1: Scrooged a lot. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's nineteen eighty eight,
- 18:57Speaker 1: I think it was. Anyway, Yeah, we'd have to look
- 18:59Speaker 1: at her Centifi cards to find out if I was
- 19:01Speaker 1: right about that, But since it's a dumb game, you failed. Yeah,
- 19:04Speaker 1: I did tell you it was GI. What is your
- 19:10Speaker 1: big holiday do you have? Like you talked about the
- 19:12Speaker 1: Adam Christmas Adam, but do you have holiday traditions? Do
- 19:15Speaker 1: you eat a certain meal like other than the normal?
- 19:20Speaker 1: You know, that's what's sad.
- 19:21Speaker 2: So we used to go to my grandfather's on Christmas Adom,
- 19:25Speaker 2: which yes, we would call Christmas Eve or some twenty third.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Does that person feel a little bit ripped off that
- 19:30Speaker 1: they don't get the actual holiday? Do you ever have that?
- 19:32Speaker 1: Because like, we're going to go home this year on
- 19:34Speaker 1: the twenty sixth, and but part of that's because that's
- 19:38Speaker 1: just when family can get together on curse side of
- 19:40Speaker 1: the family. Yeah, And so we told the other family like, hey,
- 19:43Speaker 1: we're just going to come in that one day on
- 19:44Speaker 1: the twenty sixth if that works for you. And my
- 19:45Speaker 1: brother was like, yeah, that's great. But I wonder if
- 19:48Speaker 1: deep down he's like, that's not real, that's not real.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Day after Christmas.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think that my family seemed to give
- 19:54Speaker 2: in to that reality of guys, these are all equal
- 19:57Speaker 2: twenty four hour days, Like you know, we can celebrate
- 20:00Speaker 2: whatever we want on any of them.
- 20:02Speaker 1: It's always Christmas in my heart. That's right, That's what
- 20:04Speaker 1: I tell people, you know, like a liar.
- 20:09Speaker 2: We'll go to Uh we'll go to cross Fall on
- 20:11Speaker 2: Christmas Day. So we'll travel Christmas Day and see her
- 20:15Speaker 2: parents and stay there for the night and uh, yeah,
- 20:18Speaker 2: it'll be fun.
- 20:19Speaker 1: We and tomorrow's the Christmas Eve service here. Yeah, so
- 20:22Speaker 1: that'll candlelight some communion. We'll open presence tomorrow. So we
- 20:25Speaker 1: do it on Christmas Eve at the Communion service. You're
- 20:28Speaker 1: like this at this point. Before we take communion, John
- 20:31Speaker 1: and his family would like to exchange gifts. Everyone age
- 20:35Speaker 1: watching the kids cry. Yeah, we're gonna do Johnny's old jokes.
- 20:47Speaker 1: We call a joke about that, a Christmas themed joke
- 20:56Speaker 1: about that. Oh, I like it, John, I got a
- 20:57Speaker 1: few for you. I asked my wife what she one
- 21:00Speaker 1: for Christmas. She told me nothing would make her happier
- 21:02Speaker 1: than a diamond nicklace. So I bought her nothing. I
- 21:08Speaker 1: like it, John, what do you use to drain the
- 21:11Speaker 1: water from your Brussels sprouts at Christmas? I don't know.
- 21:16Speaker 1: An advent Colander. I thought you would like that because
- 21:22Speaker 1: it's a word. Okay. Just before Christmas, an honest politician,
- 21:25Speaker 1: a generous lawyer in Santa Claus all gone into the
- 21:27Speaker 1: elevator at the Ritz Hotel. As lyft traveled from the
- 21:32Speaker 1: fifth floor down to the ground level one by one,
- 21:35Speaker 1: they noticed a fifty dollars bill lying on the lift's floor.
- 21:37Speaker 1: This is can tell it's a British joke as a're
- 21:39Speaker 1: calling it the lift instead of the elevator. Yeah. Also,
- 21:41Speaker 1: I think I know where this is going. Which one
- 21:43Speaker 1: picked up the money and handed it at reception Santa
- 21:46Speaker 1: of course, because the other two don't actually exist. That's
- 21:48Speaker 1: what it was coming. It was coming.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Finally, I didn't know how they're gonna Yeah, but the
- 21:53Speaker 2: other twos couldn't exist.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Jim asked his friend Tony whether he had bought his
- 21:57Speaker 1: wife anything for Christmas. Yes, the answer came from Tony,
- 22:00Speaker 1: who was a bit of a chauvinist. I bought her
- 22:02Speaker 1: a belt and a bag. It was very kind of you,
- 22:05Speaker 1: Jim add it. I hope she appreciated the thought. Tony
- 22:07Speaker 1: smiled as he replied, so did I Hopefully the vacuum
- 22:09Speaker 1: cleaner will work better. Now. That's kind of an older
- 22:12Speaker 1: joke because vacuum cleaners don't have bags now they're just
- 22:15Speaker 1: all canisters, and what a jerk they're bag free. I
- 22:18Speaker 1: don't like those. Huh did you who knew those were
- 22:21Speaker 1: awful to replace? If you remember the bag era of vacuum, yo,
- 22:25Speaker 1: I don't like that. You didn't like it, didn't like
- 22:27Speaker 1: how it felt. I don't want to I vacuum more.
- 22:30Speaker 1: It's not John, Why does it have to be? It's
- 22:33Speaker 1: a why do you hate women? I think That's what
- 22:35Speaker 1: I'm trying to get to. That joke was mine. I
- 22:37Speaker 1: meant to say I wrote, and I didn't Jim and Tony.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Jim and Tony are chauveness. I don't like their attitudes,
- 22:43Speaker 1: not at all. John. Let's wrap up the show. Normally
- 22:46Speaker 1: do this Week in History only do kind of a
- 22:48Speaker 1: this weekend Christmas history combined with some Christmas traditions from
- 22:51Speaker 1: around the world. We'll call it this Week in Christmas History.
- 22:57Speaker 1: All Right, here we go. That was super awkward to
- 23:08Speaker 1: get there. We'll find it, John. This week in nineteen fourteen.
- 23:12Speaker 1: You may know this, but British and German soldiers held
- 23:15Speaker 1: a Christmas truce during World War One. They held an
- 23:19Speaker 1: unofficial ceasefire on Christmas Day, they sang carols, played soccer,
- 23:22Speaker 1: and for one brief moment remembered they were human beings
- 23:25Speaker 1: rather than enemies. Then they went right back to shooting
- 23:28Speaker 1: at each other. Classic holiday spirit. The original Santa Claus. Also,
- 23:34Speaker 1: I wanted to give it this part that the original
- 23:35Speaker 1: Santa Claus was Saint Nicholas, a fourth century Christmas, a
- 23:39Speaker 1: Christian bishop brother who gave his inheritance to the poor.
- 23:43Speaker 1: He didn't wear the red suit that's associated with Santa today. John,
- 23:46Speaker 1: You know where the red suit came from, right, Because
- 23:49Speaker 1: in many earlier depictions of Santa Claus, he was green
- 23:52Speaker 1: and blue and many different colors, the Coca Cola red
- 23:56Speaker 1: and white. They wanted it some tie in, So a
- 23:59Speaker 1: lot of our visions of Santa Claus now we're kind
- 24:01Speaker 1: of but yeah, but they stopped shooting each other. Hey,
- 24:04Speaker 1: I like that. Yeah, the truth. I think we should
- 24:06Speaker 1: call off our bitter blood feud just for well, if
- 24:09Speaker 1: you just give me the diamonds, John. In nineteen sixty five,
- 24:14Speaker 1: the first song ever broadcast from space happened, and it
- 24:18Speaker 1: was jingle bells Aboard Astronauts Aboard the Gemini six brought
- 24:22Speaker 1: holiday cheer to the cosmos. Wow, they broadcast jingle bells
- 24:26Speaker 1: at the first ever as the first ever song from place,
- 24:28Speaker 1: making it clear that even in the vastness of the universe,
- 24:30Speaker 1: catchy tunes still get stuck in your head. That's what
- 24:34Speaker 1: that's And I wanted to end with some Christmas traditions
- 24:37Speaker 1: because I think it's interesting. We kind of think of ourselves.
- 24:40Speaker 1: It's like, we do Christmas the right way, but there's
- 24:42Speaker 1: so many different ways that people say. But and then
- 24:43Speaker 1: some traditions from other parts of the world that we've
- 24:45Speaker 1: adapted and adopted, and I think it's okay to note
- 24:49Speaker 1: those things. For instance, I read about one This isn't
- 24:51Speaker 1: in my notes, but I read about one Saturnalia. It's
- 24:54Speaker 1: a tradition and I think it's Nordic countries. But that's
- 24:57Speaker 1: where we get gift giving, Like we started giving gifts
- 24:59Speaker 1: because they exchanged and sometimes they even exchange roles, including
- 25:03Speaker 1: in culture, slaves and masters would exchange roles for the day,
- 25:07Speaker 1: what like trading places or something. Wow, they would, and
- 25:10Speaker 1: then they'd go back. They'd be like, ah, serving again
- 25:13Speaker 1: and they would come on. Now that's yeah, yeah, and
- 25:16Speaker 1: that weird, But that's where the gift geting comes from
- 25:18Speaker 1: that tradition that we still do in Western culture. Here's
- 25:22Speaker 1: one people in Japan. Do you know how they celebrate Christmas.
- 25:25Speaker 1: One of the things that give me a food thing
- 25:27Speaker 1: that you think that people in Japan celebrate Christmas, They
- 25:29Speaker 1: celebrate Christmas with KFC. In Japan, Christmas means fried Chicken.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Kentucky Fried Chicken has become the default Christmas dinner thanks
- 25:38Speaker 1: to a successful nineteen seventies marketing campaign. So this is
- 25:41Speaker 1: like it just got in there and they can. Yeah,
- 25:45Speaker 1: so families place their orders weeks ahead because nothing says
- 25:48Speaker 1: holiday spirit quite like a bucket of original recipe. It
- 25:51Speaker 1: is pretty terrific. Yeah, I mean I think that's actually
- 25:53Speaker 1: a good one. Yeah, And I've heard that about like
- 25:56Speaker 1: Jewish culture. There's a lot of people like they go
- 25:58Speaker 1: to the in New York City especially, you always hear about,
- 26:01Speaker 1: let's go to the Chinese restaurant because they're open. A
- 26:06Speaker 1: lot of Alosknica for Jewish like, they'll go, let's go
- 26:10Speaker 1: out for Chinese food because it's like they know it's
- 26:12Speaker 1: going to be open because most of the other restaurants
- 26:15Speaker 1: are close.
- 26:15Speaker 2: For I did see by the way we went to
- 26:16Speaker 2: the Chinese buffet of the Day that they said that'd
- 26:18Speaker 2: be open on Christmas Day.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, they know what's up. John and Venezuela. People
- 26:23Speaker 1: go to Christmas Mass on roller skates. Karaka's Venezuela is
- 26:27Speaker 1: customary for people to roller skate to church for the
- 26:31Speaker 1: mesa a d i Guendaldo or early morning Mass. I'm
- 26:35Speaker 1: sure I've butchered that. During the week leading up to Christmas.
- 26:39Speaker 1: This unique tradition is so popular that roads are often
- 26:41Speaker 1: closed to accommodate the skaters. I think we should do.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I think that'd be amazing. Can you imagine you do
- 26:47Speaker 1: your Christmas Eve service tomorrow? Yeah, people show up looking
- 26:50Speaker 1: like Sonic Drive in bell hops or whatever, you know,
- 26:54Speaker 1: the whole whatever that is car hops. It'd be hard
- 26:57Speaker 1: to skate here. There's a little cobblestone aut roads and yeah,
- 27:01Speaker 1: any kind of roller blades. Yeah, I wonder they're doing
- 27:04Speaker 1: that down there. Look, huh, they got skates. I think
- 27:09Speaker 1: roller skating should come back, like it kind of died
- 27:11Speaker 1: off when we were kids. It was like that was
- 27:12Speaker 1: the last gasp of skating rinks.
- 27:14Speaker 2: You're still like the always one in every trying to
- 27:18Speaker 2: hang on.
- 27:19Speaker 1: There's still rollers skating rinks in these some of these
- 27:21Speaker 1: small towns. They're trying to hang on. What if we
- 27:23Speaker 1: do a theme not you know, and they're just like, man,
- 27:26Speaker 1: it's but you go in and you can tell like
- 27:28Speaker 1: it's not been replaced or buff. The floors are just
- 27:30Speaker 1: it's not great. But I mean that was the thing
- 27:33Speaker 1: to do, you know, our parents, and I think we
- 27:36Speaker 1: just got the skating and showbiz pizza. Wasn't it something
- 27:40Speaker 1: all skate? Remember the all skate couple skate? Well, the
- 27:44Speaker 1: couple skating, you're by yourself. You're like, great, they're gonna play.
- 27:46Speaker 1: I'm all of that, and you're sitting on the side
- 27:51Speaker 1: like when is it? And then they go all skate,
- 27:54Speaker 1: they play journey, don't stop believing. You run out there
- 27:56Speaker 1: and then you fall down.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I think I remember skating with a girl and holding
- 27:59Speaker 2: her hand and just praying I didn't fall.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I remember I forgot. I forgot. You were popular. So
- 28:05Speaker 1: you had a couple, you have you were in a couple,
- 28:08Speaker 1: and I'm staying on a couple.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I think I just I think some girl was willing
- 28:11Speaker 2: to skate with me during a couple skate. I think
- 28:14Speaker 2: it was as a kid man, there's.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Always that one kid too that like when they have that.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I remember, I remember these skate nights where there be
- 28:21Speaker 1: one kid who could really do it. He could really
- 28:24Speaker 1: know how to use his skatesbacker he knew used his
- 28:25Speaker 1: little stoppers. Slow down whenever I use that stop right?
- 28:28Speaker 1: You just it's not great. No, that's not great at all. John.
- 28:33Speaker 1: In Germany, people uh how to pickle in the Christmas tree.
- 28:40Speaker 1: This feels made up by the way I looked it up,
- 28:42Speaker 1: because I was like, this feels like something aides come
- 28:45Speaker 1: from Germany. Isn't it like Otan and Bonn? Isn't that
- 28:47Speaker 1: like a isn't that Germany? Sure? But but now a
- 28:50Speaker 1: German tradition originally known as oh boy wine, gotch girka.
- 28:56Speaker 1: This practice maybe that's where we get the word girkin.
- 28:59Speaker 1: It's go girka at the end of it. This practice,
- 29:03Speaker 1: it has been become popular in America as well. This
- 29:07Speaker 1: not anywhere I know of, but in this I'm gonna
- 29:09Speaker 1: start doing it. Listen, you gotta go home with this tonight.
- 29:11Speaker 1: In this festive custom, families hide a pickle or a
- 29:14Speaker 1: pickle shaped ornament. I guess to make it less weird
- 29:17Speaker 1: and vinegree and smelly on the tree, and the first
- 29:21Speaker 1: child to find it on the Christmas morning. On Christmas
- 29:24Speaker 1: Morning receives an extra gift or is said to have
- 29:26Speaker 1: good luck for the coming I want the gift. I
- 29:28Speaker 1: would be like luck for you. They're holding a wet pickle.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Good luck. It's a bit of weird tradition, but hey,
- 29:39Speaker 1: who doesn't like a bonus prize for finding a random pickle? Listen? Hey,
- 29:44Speaker 1: normally you find a random Listen if you find a
- 29:46Speaker 1: random pickle anywhere else, please don't. That's not good luck.
- 29:49Speaker 1: That's like a fellow phone that's in the couch cushion.
- 29:51Speaker 1: What's that's not the wine? Gotch and Girka, John and
- 29:57Speaker 1: Ukraine families that are in their Christmas trees with spider
- 30:00Speaker 1: webs instead of traditional decorations. This custom comes from a
- 30:03Speaker 1: folk tale, but a poor widow who couldn't afford decorations,
- 30:05Speaker 1: and on Christmas morning her children found their tree covered
- 30:08Speaker 1: and beautiful webs spun by sympathetic spiders. I think that's
- 30:11Speaker 1: a wonderful story. That could be a movie. Wonderful. That's
- 30:14Speaker 1: like a Pixar Yeah, I mean, it's almost like old
- 30:17Speaker 1: Charlotte's Web.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Only would it not be terrified to spiders is to
- 30:20Speaker 2: watch Charlotte Charlotte's Web.
- 30:21Speaker 1: This is believed to bring good luck for the coming
- 30:23Speaker 1: year as well. It's a lot of luck. We're going. Yeah,
- 30:26Speaker 1: it's almost like the people who don't want to take
- 30:29Speaker 1: down their Halloween decorations are like, look, I'm celebrating, Like
- 30:31Speaker 1: Ukrainian people like, no, you just need to it's time. Yeah, yeah, John,
- 30:36Speaker 1: do you know that the average Christmas tree takes about
- 30:39Speaker 1: fifteen years to grow? I didn't know that. Huh so
- 30:42Speaker 1: this is a we need. You got to really want
- 30:44Speaker 1: to get into this best. You don't do live trees, right, No, No,
- 30:48Speaker 1: I haven't put up a tree in years. We don't
- 30:49Speaker 1: have kids. It's hard to a tree at all. We're humbugs.
- 30:51Speaker 1: We're just with a words. I'm sorry, I'm a grinch.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I have one of those. It's like three pieces goes together,
- 30:56Speaker 1: lights up on its own. Come on, no, I need
- 30:57Speaker 1: to maybe i'd be less bummed. I'm sorry, I'm a bummers.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I shouldn't even I should have said yes. We had the
- 31:02Speaker 1: whole houses lit walkings all across the Okay, John, the
- 31:08Speaker 1: first state to officially recognize Christmas in eighteen thirty six.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Was who Okay, eighteen thirty six first date. Well, that's
- 31:15Speaker 2: gonna be hard.
- 31:15Speaker 1: You'd think that I'll do it at once, but I
- 31:17Speaker 1: guess somebody had to start it off. Really, this is
- 31:19Speaker 1: it New England or in the South. It's in the South.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Then I'm gonna say Louisiana Alabama. Oh wow, so Alabama
- 31:27Speaker 1: you got the Christmas spirit. You caught it early.
- 31:30Speaker 2: And just saying all these traditions that we think again
- 31:32Speaker 2: goes back to the Santa Claus and the red suit.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Like we see this as like timeless, but that was
- 31:38Speaker 2: eighteen thirty six.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Eighteen thirty six, I mean not timeless, not timeless. It's
- 31:42Speaker 1: only been you know, a couple hundred years.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and I mean that the things like again the
- 31:47Speaker 2: Santa Claus and all this stuff.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Right, I wonder what that celebration looked like for real,
- 31:51Speaker 1: probably roller skates there.
- 31:53Speaker 2: You should watch again, as always say food, the Built
- 31:55Speaker 2: America is fascinating stuff on what Christmas and.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Handy cane turkeys and stuff like that. Yeah, we talked
- 32:02Speaker 1: about the frozen turkeys before me Thanksgiving, all these frozen
- 32:05Speaker 1: turkeys we had to get rid of they talked about,
- 32:09Speaker 1: oh what they called fruitcake. Yeah, like this keeps forever, right, Yeah,
- 32:16Speaker 1: that's why my parents like to get Did your mom
- 32:18Speaker 1: like to get fruitcake?
- 32:20Speaker 2: No, no, we didn't, yelling my dad loved to get
- 32:21Speaker 2: a fruitcake from the dollar store.
- 32:23Speaker 1: What you passed it on? Right at the point of
- 32:25Speaker 1: it that you can just like I can mail this
- 32:27Speaker 1: now to anton Sylvia. I think he just ate someone.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Oh he enjoyed it. It's too chewy, it's it's gummies
- 32:33Speaker 1: in it.
- 32:33Speaker 2: It's a bunch of candy fruit fruitcakes a deceptive Yeah,
- 32:38Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, right, Yeah, because it's not
- 32:41Speaker 2: that at all.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Gaffigan's famous bit about fruitcake is like it because because
- 32:46Speaker 1: he has a whole thing about cake, he does ten
- 32:48Speaker 1: minutes on cake, but then he goes what happened to fruitcake?
- 32:50Speaker 1: He goes fruit good cake, great, fruitcake, nasty crap, Like
- 32:54Speaker 1: he doesn't understand how you combined a good and a
- 32:57Speaker 1: great and got awful John. Finally, Icelandic folklore includes a
- 33:03Speaker 1: giant cat called the Yule cat. This sounds like I'm
- 33:07Speaker 1: making it out. It does. It prowls during Christmas time.
- 33:12Speaker 1: It is said to eat those who do not receive
- 33:14Speaker 1: new clothes for Christmas, encouraging everyone to buy new garments
- 33:18Speaker 1: before the holiday. What this is? This is just a
- 33:21Speaker 1: commercial ploy. It feels like it's also kind of targeted
- 33:24Speaker 1: at poor people, Like, oh, seems like that's an old
- 33:27Speaker 1: sweater and then you just get clawed to death by
- 33:30Speaker 1: a cat. Yeah, this yule cat must have been big too,
- 33:34Speaker 1: if it could eat people.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Yule Cat, I need a more creative name. Yeah, what
- 33:40Speaker 2: would you call the yule cat?
- 33:44Speaker 1: Scratchy Christmas kitty? Yeah, it's not I don't know. That's
- 33:47Speaker 1: a that's a tough one. That just feels like it's yeah,
- 33:50Speaker 1: you're you're it's don't single me out. I have a
- 33:53Speaker 1: lot of the same clothes that I've had for many Christmases.
- 33:55Speaker 1: I will say that. Yeah, no, I know, I don't.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I'm not, I don't. I don't about you and.
- 34:00Speaker 2: I having closed years, is that no one would recognize
- 34:03Speaker 2: him because they're all very nondescript like that.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Yeah, if I wear a new sweater, if you're like, well,
- 34:06Speaker 1: look who got in it? Like people are gonna know this,
- 34:08Speaker 1: it's very oh so you were a color right? Very well?
- 34:12Speaker 1: Now I know I didn't want to do that.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's always like that, like that friend that thinks
- 34:17Speaker 2: that acts like you never call him back, and then
- 34:19Speaker 2: when you call him back, they're like, well look whould
- 34:21Speaker 2: have shouted.
- 34:21Speaker 1: I'll just go hey, don't make me regret it. Yeah,
- 34:23Speaker 1: because I don't have to do it. Next time, you say, like,
- 34:26Speaker 1: that's great calling you back, Stop punishing. John loves his family, everybody. Wow,
- 34:32Speaker 1: I felt like that felt like that came that came
- 34:34Speaker 1: out in nowhere, Jenny, you are that John had that
- 34:36Speaker 1: one loaded up the old pet dispenser of rage. Listen,
- 34:40Speaker 1: he just pulls his neck back and out pops the anger.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Is this season Christmas?
- 34:47Speaker 2: So we started Elf last night, Okay, just start not
- 34:50Speaker 2: the movie, No, no, we started making an Elf?
- 34:53Speaker 1: No yes, the movie?
- 34:54Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, well say he had finals Man last week
- 34:57Speaker 2: and it was a lot.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Did you guys do Elf on the shelf? Which you
- 35:00Speaker 1: you never did? Did you feel little bit ripped off? Though?
- 35:02Speaker 2: She remembers one being She said, I remember you put
- 35:04Speaker 2: it there was an ELF's shelf, like in this house
- 35:06Speaker 2: plant And the next morning I got up and it
- 35:08Speaker 2: was still there.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Oh right, Like I knew this was well that Elvis
- 35:12Speaker 1: didn't move, Johnny. I don't know why I didn't. It
- 35:14Speaker 1: just it just because for some reason for us, your
- 35:17Speaker 1: elf was lazy. He's like, look, I'm just gonna hang
- 35:20Speaker 1: out on this plant. The rent is good. It was
- 35:26Speaker 1: not getting a Christmas tree. I mean, he's looking for
- 35:27Speaker 1: the pickle. Who knows that's true. He was elf on
- 35:30Speaker 1: the shelf was looking for the pickle and the vicus.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. It was a yeah, it was. You know,
- 35:38Speaker 1: there's there's a Jewish thing that's mensho on a bench
- 35:41Speaker 1: that they somebody came up with where it's like it's
- 35:43Speaker 1: a little little hoonica figurine. But instead of the elf
- 35:46Speaker 1: on the shelf, which I like it, he's a man
- 35:48Speaker 1: on a bench. Yeah.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Come on, man, did you get any Advent calendars from?
- 35:53Speaker 1: You? Do this right? You collect them right? The cheese,
- 35:55Speaker 1: the chocolates, what do you get? I don't do it much.
- 35:57Speaker 1: You don't do it.
- 35:58Speaker 2: But I know that the Wardens and the Hollands, like
- 36:01Speaker 2: every year they do whatever they have out there, and
- 36:04Speaker 2: they'll do it every Yeah.
- 36:05Speaker 1: But yeah, cheese or is it thirty days? I mean,
- 36:08Speaker 1: how long is the Advent? It's twenty five?
- 36:09Speaker 2: Twenty five well, the advent counter is usually twenty five days,
- 36:13Speaker 2: but Advent is for Sundays. Okay, So Advent is actually
- 36:17Speaker 2: about because we look at this up the other day,
- 36:20Speaker 2: someone's asking.
- 36:20Speaker 1: It's about it.
- 36:21Speaker 2: It's based upon the cycles of the moon, and so
- 36:24Speaker 2: the first Sunday of the Advent has to do with
- 36:26Speaker 2: when a certain moon has appeared.
- 36:29Speaker 1: So yeah, it's really interesting. Yeah. Well, I mean, I
- 36:33Speaker 1: eat some chocolate today. Does that I'm eating. I'm celebrating
- 36:37Speaker 1: in my heart, I'm eating a lot. I need I
- 36:40Speaker 1: need to go back. That's the holiday times. Self shaming
- 36:44Speaker 1: can come there in New Year's Absolutely, that's what you
- 36:46Speaker 1: want it. Mm hm you're saying old langsyne, you don't
- 36:48Speaker 1: know what it means. And then you go, I got
- 36:50Speaker 1: to pull myself together.
- 36:51Speaker 2: I just my dog start barking, stop barking outside. That's
- 36:54Speaker 2: not one for Christmas.
- 36:55Speaker 1: You know.
- 36:56Speaker 2: My new trick right now to get them in uh huh,
- 36:58Speaker 2: because I can go there A stop a a's come here.
- 37:01Speaker 1: So then you go as treat.
- 37:02Speaker 2: He knows treat, But he won't come right now if
- 37:04Speaker 2: he really wants to bark, because he knows he's gonna
- 37:06Speaker 2: get treat eventually.
- 37:07Speaker 1: No, matter how much he bark. Yeah, so now I
- 37:09Speaker 1: take out.
- 37:09Speaker 2: The little oyster crackers is one of the treats we
- 37:11Speaker 2: give him, and I start eating it really lout my
- 37:15Speaker 2: mouth open. I chew real loud, John, I mean, here's that.
- 37:18Speaker 2: He'll turn around like, wait, you're eating my treat, and he'll.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Come this is embarrassing. I can't help it. It works.
- 37:23Speaker 1: You're chomping on a oyster cracker to get my dog
- 37:27Speaker 1: making a big show of it. Yeah, Like, I look
- 37:29Speaker 1: what your how many oyster crackers are you eating to day? John,
- 37:33Speaker 1: I've gained seventy five pounds.
- 37:37Speaker 2: I didn't say it's a low carbon trick, but it
- 37:39Speaker 2: usually does the trick.
- 37:40Speaker 1: So, man, you got it. The things we do for
- 37:43Speaker 1: our dogs.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Yeah, if he could be a good boy for Christmas, Johnny,
- 37:47Speaker 2: then that that would be all that I want.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, Daisy doesn't have Toby anymore. We had
- 37:52Speaker 1: to put Toby to sleep, and so now Daisy just
- 37:55Speaker 1: goes out. She goes to the steps and she won't
- 37:56Speaker 1: go down, and we have to go go pee, go pee.
- 38:00Speaker 1: She'd be likely she'd have to pee. We finally get
- 38:03Speaker 1: out of the art after like coaxing out of the art.
- 38:05Speaker 1: She peas for like two minutes. You were going to
- 38:07Speaker 1: hold that. She was want to come back in, and
- 38:10Speaker 1: then she goes, she goes words my treat and I go,
- 38:12Speaker 1: I gave it to John. John. John's crunching on it
- 38:16Speaker 1: right now, and you should have thought about that before
- 38:19Speaker 1: you held your pin. That's right. I don't know, John. Well,
- 38:24Speaker 1: I didn't get you a gift this year, and I
- 38:25Speaker 1: apologized I didn't get you. I was afraid I was
- 38:27Speaker 1: going to come in and you were going to have
- 38:28Speaker 1: to display sent a text message. I thought, IM trying
- 38:34Speaker 1: to remember do we give each other gifts? Well, then
- 38:36Speaker 1: you give me like a I don't know, Top Golf
- 38:39Speaker 1: or something last year gift card. I don't think maybe
- 38:42Speaker 1: that was birthday. I think I want to save you
- 38:44Speaker 1: a tennessee. Uh. I want to say you got me
- 38:46Speaker 1: a Top Golf gift card and literally, uh, we never
- 38:50Speaker 1: went no, we my it was in my wallet and
- 38:53Speaker 1: I just carried it in my wallet and then my
- 38:56Speaker 1: wallet got washed in that Top Golf gift card. It's
- 39:00Speaker 1: like one of the flimsy kind of thing and it
- 39:01Speaker 1: just disintegrated. I went to Top Golf with the staff
- 39:05Speaker 1: last week for a Christmas party. Yeah, and it was
- 39:08Speaker 1: I was awful. I haven't. I haven't swung a club
- 39:10Speaker 1: at a minute. It's cold. You can blame the cold.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Now there's big heaters and we had a big spread
- 39:14Speaker 1: of food. The way that the atmosphere reacts to the ball,
- 39:17Speaker 1: and it's a lot of fun. I handsome, decent shit.
- 39:19Speaker 1: I still hit my nine iron generally, So that's it though.
- 39:23Speaker 1: That's all I can't. Yeah, we need to go together.
- 39:26Speaker 1: We just well, we need to do when I do gifts.
- 39:27Speaker 1: We just need to find a time to keep the
- 39:30Speaker 1: spirit of the season and go swing a golf club.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Let's wing golf clubs together. That'll be fun. Let's make
- 39:35Speaker 1: it happen. Make it happen, anyone else you should make

- 39:55Speaker 1: it's not too dry. Get the gravy is very important
- 39:58Speaker 1: to the holiday meals. I've noticed these are dry. These
- 40:01Speaker 1: are dry meats we serve. Yeah, and we go, oh
- 40:05Speaker 1: the gravy, you go. Yeah, just from a bygone era.
- 40:08Speaker 1: They now we need our meats to Yeah, I need

- 40:41Speaker 2: Hey guys, I'm john This is Johnny. Welcome to a
- 40:44Speaker 2: special Christmas edition. I'll talk about that.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll put a little Kirk Franklin on that.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Johnny insisted on Mariah Carey opening up the show.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Kurt Franklin was like the apostle Paul of choir directors.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Then you think because he would anticipate question, Yes he would,
- 41:01Speaker 1: and yes he would. He would anticipate. He knew the
- 41:04Speaker 1: next line. Tell them about you want Yeah, yeah, it's
- 41:07Speaker 1: kind of cheating because he already knew it. He knew
- 41:09Speaker 1: because he had written the song. He wrote the song
- 41:10Speaker 1: many times.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Well, so, yeah, this is our Christmas edition and it's
- 41:15Speaker 2: gonna be a little shorter show for those of you.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Who are right now to get right back to your family. Yeah,
- 41:20Speaker 1: you're right now. You just left function. Uncle sal already
- 41:27Speaker 1: told you you're going to hell for that ear ring.
- 41:29Speaker 1: You got your tattoo, goodness or a tattoo of an
- 41:32Speaker 1: ear ring. That's that's the double. That's when you know
- 41:35Speaker 1: you're in trouble. You know.
- 41:37Speaker 2: In the endorsement book, I wrote about the fact that
- 41:40Speaker 2: you know, scientists are still studying how they could put
- 41:42Speaker 2: because if you haven't opened a lot of Barbie boxes
- 41:44Speaker 2: in your life, probably are a lot of little kids toys,
- 41:47Speaker 2: you know, a few in the amount of little twisty.
- 41:50Speaker 1: Ties and little all everything just right.
- 41:53Speaker 2: It really is unbelievable, And I really do believe it's
- 41:55Speaker 2: almost like some government, like a Chinese government, conspiracy to
- 41:59Speaker 2: undermine the mental health of Americans, because I mean, yous.
- 42:02Speaker 1: It got to be the Chinese government because there are
- 42:04Speaker 1: political rivals. Well, no, because most of the things I'm
- 42:07Speaker 1: opening came from China. Oh, I said, they've done it
- 42:09Speaker 1: to us, right, And they're also making money off of
- 42:12Speaker 1: watching an Americans squiring with our big fat sausage fingers.
- 42:15Speaker 1: This will make them very unhappy. So I don't know.
- 42:17Speaker 2: I don't know if they're out to get us or not.
- 42:19Speaker 2: I'm just saying I didn't say it's a fool proof
- 42:21Speaker 2: no conspiracy.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Well, I think it's okay to say China's probably out
- 42:24Speaker 1: to get us at this point. Maybe I don't know.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Maybe I don't know. They make a lot of money
- 42:28Speaker 1: off of us. They do, so it's in their best
- 42:30Speaker 1: interest to keep us around, maybe right.
- 42:32Speaker 2: But to keep us frustrated with all the little toys.
- 42:34Speaker 2: I mean, seriously, I'm thinking to myself, how how worried
- 42:37Speaker 2: are you that people are going to steal this Barbie doll? Like, really,
- 42:40Speaker 2: was it that big of a deal. I would rather
- 42:42Speaker 2: have somebody Sometimes. I want to be less secure, Johnny.
- 42:45Speaker 2: I just I just want to be less What.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Was the thing a while back with China? There were
- 42:49Speaker 1: some toys that were plastic and they were coated in something,
- 42:53Speaker 1: and then kids were putting them in their mouths, and
- 42:55Speaker 1: somehow it was the same net effect of taking MDMA.
- 43:00Speaker 1: There was like some chemical compound and then like there
- 43:03Speaker 1: was some unsafe conditions at a Chinese manufacturing plant. They were like, yeah,
- 43:07Speaker 1: this is basically hallucinogens if your kid puts this little whatever,
- 43:11Speaker 1: these toy beads or whatever in their mouth. Like okay,
- 43:13Speaker 1: So I had to like stop. It was a few
- 43:15Speaker 1: years ago.
- 43:16Speaker 2: And listeners, we're bringing you great stories like this for
- 43:19Speaker 2: Christmas edition.
- 43:20Speaker 1: We wanted your hot beat Christmas stories like this, China's
- 43:25Speaker 1: poisoning our children holiday.
- 43:28Speaker 2: So this is before Christmas when we're recording this, but
- 43:30Speaker 2: it will come out.
- 43:32Speaker 1: By the way, I say happy Holidays because I mean
- 43:35Speaker 1: there are several holia. There's Christmas and New Year's. I
- 43:38Speaker 1: don't find it political to say happy holidays because I mean,
- 43:41Speaker 1: haven't married Christmas in a happy New Year?
- 43:43Speaker 2: When did you first discover that you were against the
- 43:45Speaker 2: god of the war on Christmas? No? I mean I again,
- 43:49Speaker 2: and I always make the point that holiday from its
- 43:52Speaker 2: etymology means holyday.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Etymology meaning the history of bugs right where year to go? Yeah?
- 44:05Speaker 2: Yeah, but there's something about being inside with the fire
- 44:08Speaker 2: and you know, with the Christmas tree and the Christmas
- 44:11Speaker 2: tree on fire, Have.
- 44:12Speaker 1: You watched Christmas Vacation yet? There's a few movies have
- 44:14Speaker 1: to watch every year. Yeah, no, I've not watched it
- 44:16Speaker 1: this year, you say.
- 44:18Speaker 2: And I've watched Elf already, I think twice. ELF's great,
- 44:21Speaker 2: and we've watched some of Chris. I just fast forward
- 44:23Speaker 2: through a few things on Christmas Vacation.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Do you know where to go? Do you know? Of course? Yeah,
- 44:27Speaker 1: the pool scene and all that stuff. I can't remember. Oh,
- 44:30Speaker 1: that's regular vacation, the pool scene with Christy Brinkley. No,
- 44:34Speaker 1: there's a pool scene in Christmas Vacas. Oh is there? Yes,
- 44:37Speaker 1: I don't.
- 44:37Speaker 2: I don't want to describe it much here in the detail,
- 44:40Speaker 2: but it's similar.
- 44:41Speaker 1: I'll put it that way. Pull up the clip and
- 44:42Speaker 1: we'll play it over the air too, and get shut down.
- 44:44Speaker 2: But he's, you know, and we're watching a TV version,
- 44:47Speaker 2: so like a lot of the cussing gets you know,
- 44:49Speaker 2: she could tell that they've they've overdubbed something.
- 44:51Speaker 1: You know, replaced things with fudge and think you're a
- 44:54Speaker 1: hot dog. Wait a minute, I don't think he said
- 44:56Speaker 1: one of the most hot dog. It's one of the
- 44:58Speaker 1: most epic rants. Thank me, no, thank you, You're like,
- 45:01Speaker 1: wait a minute. I don't think that's a gangster movie.
- 45:04Speaker 1: I don't think he said think me.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Whenever he gets to the Jelly of the Month club
- 45:07Speaker 2: and he opens up the envelope and he goes off,
- 45:09Speaker 2: you know, I want I want Frank Shirley right here
- 45:12Speaker 2: so I can tell him what And then he just goes.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, I mean it's a I'm assuming he
- 45:17Speaker 1: memorized that. It looks like he's not, you know, came
- 45:20Speaker 1: it came from deep within, it did, that was in
- 45:22Speaker 1: its soul. It quite the quite have you read the
- 45:26Speaker 1: study though, that says people, when you say curse words,
- 45:28Speaker 1: it actually does reduce your pain. I think MythBusters did
- 45:31Speaker 1: it one time where they were they had their hand
- 45:33Speaker 1: in ice. What are they hooked up to some sort
- 45:36Speaker 1: of yeah and it uh dope. I mean like they
- 45:40Speaker 1: figured out how it diminished the pain. But they did
- 45:42Speaker 1: one where they just said whatever, and then they had
- 45:45Speaker 1: another one where they said, like expleotits and just like
- 45:48Speaker 1: they bleeped it. It was network television means USA, but
- 45:52Speaker 1: they just bleeped it. But they said their pain level
- 45:55Speaker 1: did go down wow, you know, like fifty percent. I
- 45:59Speaker 1: guess again, this seems like this seems like this seems
- 46:02Speaker 1: like I'm making I'm pro cursing. I'm just saying, Look,
- 46:05Speaker 1: it seems like difficult data to quantify to me. I
- 46:07Speaker 1: don't know they figured out how to do it.
- 46:09Speaker 2: They were worried about the variables and controls and the takeaways.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Johnny, I need my research to be you stub your
- 46:16Speaker 1: you stub your toe in the middle of the night,
- 46:18Speaker 1: and you drop whatever word. You know, I don't know.
- 46:23Speaker 1: They're just signs, they're science that backs up that that
- 46:26Speaker 1: is like a release. I don't know, Johnny, because I
- 46:30Speaker 1: know you mean it, say gollie g or what what
- 46:33Speaker 1: are you? No?
- 46:35Speaker 2: I do think that there are other expletives that aren't
- 46:38Speaker 2: on that list. And I do think that in that
- 46:41Speaker 2: particular way, swearing and curse words are are funny because
- 46:45Speaker 2: they're so cultural.
- 46:46Speaker 1: You know. Yeah, so if you say crap, is that
- 46:48Speaker 1: it's something else? I mean, I know, if you feel
- 46:50Speaker 1: better about yeah, feeling that's just as bad or whatever,
- 46:52Speaker 1: And it definitely would be considered just about if you
- 46:54Speaker 1: look it up. I mean, you're saying the same.
- 46:55Speaker 2: My mom will listen to this, And here's the deal.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Like growing up, you don't say freaking like that, because
- 47:00Speaker 2: you're just you might as well just say it, you know,
- 47:01Speaker 2: and so but if you would have just said it,
- 47:04Speaker 2: you would have gotten more trouble for sure, you know.
- 47:06Speaker 1: So that whole you might as well just say a thing.
- 47:09Speaker 1: I don't think that was true, No, because kids don't
- 47:12Speaker 1: try that.
- 47:13Speaker 2: Like if your parents say you all say, they don't
- 47:15Speaker 2: mean that.
- 47:16Speaker 1: It is lesser to them. What it's like. Heck is
- 47:19Speaker 1: for people that don't believe in Gosh. That's the whole
- 47:21Speaker 1: Thing's go straight to Heck. If you don't, you don't
- 47:27Speaker 1: believe in Gosh.
