- 1:41Welcome to our show today, Emmett's.
- 1:44So great to have you here.
- 1:46Thank you so much for having me, Denise.
- 1:47I appreciate the introduction.
- 1:49My goodness.
- 1:50Nervous system repair.
- 1:52Ah, I think as a society, our nervous systems are.
- 1:59Shot and we don't even realize it.
- 2:02Yeah, help.
- 2:03Help us to understand what that actually can come out looking like so people can actually start to understand when we say nervous system, what is it we're talking about and how can we recognize.
- 2:16It's basically your body.
- 2:18So the mindset work, it works on the mind, but all of the, all of the information, all the fears, it's stored in the nervous system, the body.
- 2:29This is like the.
- 2:30The animal part of us that's like, that just automatically goes into trauma mode.
- 2:35That goes into fear.
- 2:36We're not consciously able to control it.
- 2:39Most of the time the body just gets scared or tenses up.
- 2:44And so many of what people call, um, or people consider to be like personality traits.
- 2:50I'm shy.
- 2:51I'm Oh yes.
- 2:52You know, confront, a lot of these things are in rather than being personality.
- 2:58Types are actually res trauma responses that people have adapted to.
- 3:03And now people just think, this is who I am.
- 3:06I'm shy, I am afraid to put myself forward.
- 3:08This is part of my personality.
- 3:10But no, it's because your nervous system is carrying all of that trauma from your childhood and it's kind of, it's holding you back so often the, the mindset blocks that people talk about.
- 3:22It's only, it's, it's not even half the bucket.
- 3:26Mm.
- 3:26It's because most of the trauma, the fear, the extreme fear of visibility that so many people, women have particularly, but people in general, women particularly, right.
- 3:36We're afraid of showing up.
- 3:38It's because we have this legacy of kind of being attacked maybe in our childhood or not being allowed to speak up.
- 3:44And also because women, we collectively have been kind of scapegoated.
- 3:49By society.
- 3:50So we're carrying the trauma of that.
- 3:52And that's often not consciously or what we're not aware of, but the body is holding it nonetheless.
- 3:58And this is where we've got to start to really, to really open ourselves up to receiving.
- 4:03'cause when the nervous system is tense, we can't receive, we're in survival mode.
- 4:09Even if we don't, even if we don't know it in our head, we feel like we're fine.
- 4:13Right.
- 4:13Where the body is in survival mode, the body is holding all that tension.
- 4:18And the way to real freedom is to open up that nervous system and to teach your nervous system that it's safe to open, that it's safe to receive, that it's safe to relax, that the world is a safe place.
- 4:30And that's pretty hard when we've been trained for 30, 40, 50 years.
- 4:36You know, we're gonna be, something terrible is gonna happen.
- 4:39We've got tense for the worst, you know, so our nervous system is holding onto all of that, even if psychologically we know better.
- 4:48And this is where, this is where so much of this work, uh, really needs to start.
- 4:52So what's, what, what does that look like?
- 4:55I mean, other than our body do we like, and our mind, our mind has such power, but we're missing what you're saying is we're missing so much because the rest of it Yeah.
- 5:07Is being held in our bodies.
- 5:08So what do we do to start moving forward?
- 5:13Well, I, I do somatic work with people, so working with opening up the body, working with breath, working with sound, working with movement of the body.
- 5:22Okay?
- 5:22Because, uh, we're not, we're not just ahead.
- 5:25We're a whole system, and this is where we start.
- 5:29You could, your brain can know things, and I've done this.
- 5:32We can be in, it's a way of avoiding, it's a trauma response as well.
- 5:36When we so get into, I know this and I know better and I've studied all about it.
- 5:40I know all the psycho psychology of why I'm like this, but yet our bodies are still stuck in that pattern and.
- 5:47Sometimes we can use that psychology stuff to kind of keep ourselves stuck.
- 5:51We wanna be in, feel like we're in control.
- 5:54And this is one powerful way to keep that sense of control of holding on for dear life.
- 5:59And, you know, the work that I do is all about opening that up and working with, I work a lot with the inner critic is what, what it's generally known as.
- 6:09And what I've realized is that this, this so-called inner critic.
- 6:13Mm-hmm.
- 6:13It's, uh.
- 6:14It's kind of a, it ticks all the box of the narcissist, but the call is coming from inside the house, and yet we're taught to take this thing to therapy, to send love to it and treat it like a wounded child.
- 6:29Yeah.
- 6:29And we've realized that's not the way, that's not the way to deal with this shaming thing.
- 6:34It's like a parasite.
- 6:35It's sucking us dry.
- 6:37And it does, if you look, go through the, the DSM, um, definition of the, of the, of a narcissist that the inner critic of so many of us, it fits that bill.
- 6:47It's grandiose, self-important.
- 6:50It knows best.
- 6:51It's got all these fantasies.
- 6:52It's special, it's high and myy.
- 6:55It's in titles.
- 6:56The only one that it doesn't tick is that it's interpersonally exploitative, because who it exploits is you right?
- 7:05Stands to its tune and that is what's we're, when we're stuck in shame, the nervous system is basically held hostage.
- 7:13And that's what this so-called inner critic.
- 7:15I call it the inner narcissist.
- 7:17That's what it does.
- 7:18It has us under house arrest and so many people don't even realize that we're there because we've all been taught since childhood.
- 7:26Shame is good for you, that you need to feel shame in order to be a good person.
- 7:30And we're carrying all that, and that means that we just kind of remain, no matter what we do.
- 7:35We're still stuck in this kind of trauma response, in this kind of shame loop that keeps us small, that keeps us from expanding into our power and reclaiming our space and really receiving what we're here to receive in this lifetime.
- 7:50Amazing.
- 7:51So when you're talking about shame.
- 7:55My brain goes to, well, I, I know what shame is.
- 7:59Do I really know what shame is?
- 8:01I'm starting to get curious.
- 8:03What do you see shame as being?
- 8:06Well, shame is that thought that it's often defined as the belief that I'm bad.
- 8:12Something wrong with me.
- 8:13Yep.
- 8:14But if we look at shame, really shame is actually, it's a, it's a, it's a lethal cocktail.
- 8:21A bunch of, bunch of self attacks, self-loathing, anger turned inwards, resentment, fear, you know, all this bunch of emotions that are basically turned against the self.
- 8:33And then from down there.
- 8:35From downstream.
- 8:36From that, you've got all these beliefs that I'm wrong, that I'm ugly, that I'm too fat, that I'm too thin, that I've got too many wrinkles, that I've got a big ass, that I've got a big nose, you know, whatever.
- 8:44Whatever those things that people say, this is the shaming voice that that really rules our life, and that tells you.
- 8:54So many women are gonna relate to this because so many women are stuck in that, you know, imposter syndrome.
- 9:00Yeah, a lot of that's pretty much everyone has that.
- 9:03And if we trace that back to, you could see that shame.
- 9:08That's shame with better pr, you know?
- 9:10But nobody wants to talk about shame because shame is a dirty four letter word.
- 9:15You know, nobody wants to, nobody wants to talk about, it's something that we should keep on the side, right?
- 9:19We're shamed of our shame.
- 9:21We don't wanna own it.
- 9:23And uh, that means we avoid the issue when we pretend it's not there and we press it.
- 9:29And, uh, I'm, my whole message is really about breaking free from this shame voice, because this shame voice is kind of an implant from culture.
- 9:38I could talk about that.
- 9:39Women have a double dose because, you know, we, we collectively as women have been scapegoated by society, you know, for, for all the sexual things, right?
- 9:50And dirty bits that nobody wants to talk about.
- 9:52It's all been dumped on women.
- 9:54So we're carrying all that and.
- 9:57So much of that is shame.
- 9:59And this shame is also when I started looking into this, I started to realize that, you know, trauma, when it passes down intergenerationally, we need the shame in order for it to stick.
- 10:10Like if you look at an animal that you know, wild animal, they don't, they might experience a trauma, but then they go and have a good shake after they've been hunted by the lion.
- 10:19They have a good shake, they shake it out.
- 10:20They're not still thinking about that 20 years later.
- 10:23So what's the difference with us humans?
- 10:26It's shame.
- 10:27Shame is the glue that keeps that inter intergenerational trauma going.
- 10:32When you take shame out of the equation.
- 10:35Mm-hmm.
- 10:35It's really, shame is like the granddaddy of, you know, it's such ati, it's not normal emotion.
- 10:40It's like the granddaddy, the worst possible thing.
- 10:43'cause it's the only so-called emotion I don't think.
- 10:45It's not even normal emotion.
- 10:47Right.
- 10:47Yeah.
- 10:48It's really.
- 10:48Personal attack on the self.
- 10:51Mm-hmm.
- 10:51And we're, we're gast every single day and told that shame is good for you.
- 10:56Even in the English language particularly, you have no shame, Denise.
- 10:59You have no shame.
- 11:00You don't have enough shame.
- 11:02Mm-hmm.
- 11:02So you're not a good person, you're not a good girl, or you have no shame.
- 11:07You, you know, it's, it's an insult that we're throwing around there and what I've realized in my work, mm-hmm.
- 11:13Shame is a, is a cultural implant.
- 11:15That's really always every 100% of the time it's about control.
- 11:21You know, if there's a child who here is making, and I want him to shut up mm-hmm.
- 11:25I shame him very quickly.
- 11:26He gets quiet, you know, and I get to feel, oh, so important.
- 11:29I'm so big.
- 11:30Look what I've done.
- 11:31It's a, it's a narcissistic hit.
- 11:34We, we, we do that because we're carrying so much shame, right?
- 11:38And we wanna get rid of it.
- 11:39So how do we get rid of it?
- 11:40The, a lot of women do this, we do this to other women.
- 11:43Mm-hmm.
- 11:43We're feeling the shame.
- 11:44We don't, it's a bit uncomfortable, so we shame that woman over there.
- 11:48Right.
- 11:49Look at her big ass, look at her wrinkles, and then suddenly we feel like, oh.
- 11:52I'm so powerful.
- 11:53Hmm.
- 11:54Look what I did to that person.
- 11:56And it relieves us temporarily.
- 11:58I was gonna say, does it?
- 12:00Yeah, it does not, it's not effective, but it gives us that, that like little ooh, but it's a narcissistic hit is what it is.
- 12:08Right.
- 12:09Because it makes us feel powerful.
- 12:11And when we do that to ourselves or other people, we are playing that shame game.
- 12:16We are passing it on, we are ensuring that it keeps going.
- 12:19Mm-hmm.
- 12:20What I've realized is that we can cut off that shame brain by shame game by working with our own inner critic, the old, the inner narcissist, right?
- 12:30Um, because the only, we only experience shame.
- 12:33Like if you tell me that I've got, or if I say to you, Denise, that you've got mm-hmm.
- 12:37That I hate your purple hair, you're gonna just think I'm a crazy woman.
- 12:41You know?
- 12:42Mm-hmm.
- 12:42You are only going to feel shame if, if you have that inner narcissist voice that says you do, or big ass or whatever.
- 12:51Whatever the shaming words are, you have to, that inner narcissist has to agree in order for you to experience shame.
- 12:57Otherwise, you're just gonna think.
- 12:59That person is crazy and see it for what it is.
- 13:01Right?
- 13:02And shame is always a projection.
- 13:04It's always a projection, okay?
- 13:06'cause we're projecting something that's uncomfortable.
- 13:09I feel something uncomfortable.
- 13:11I wanna put it on you so I don't have to feel it.
- 13:14Right?
- 13:14And that's the sneaky way that shame keeps being passed down from generation to generation.
- 13:20But we absolutely have the power to break the cycle.
- 13:23Which, which is so important, which is my next question.
- 13:28We have the power to break that cycle, not only for years to come, but for ourselves, right?
- 13:36Yeah.
- 13:37Yeah.
- 13:37So when we do that shame game, and I mean, I think of.
- 13:43You know, you, we all can think of times in our lives where women have shamed others and made themselves feel great as a result because you take it off yourself and push it to something else.
- 13:57Yeah.
- 13:58When that happens, are you actually growing it inside yourself at the same time?
- 14:06I, I, I think you're right.
- 14:08I think you are because you're, you're shaming them.
- 14:10You're putting that shame on them.
- 14:11You're creating more to be ashamed of, right?
- 14:14So it doesn't dissipate the shame.
- 14:17Yeah.
- 14:17Actually in a sense, like the empathy is down there underneath it.
- 14:20Okay.
- 14:21And this is a why, this is why I have such a big problem with the way it's shame is presented as this moral compass.
- 14:28Mm-hmm.
- 14:28And even therapists or everyone, you know, they talk about, I even had someone reach out to me on Substack recently.
- 14:34Mm-hmm.
- 14:35And they said their therapists have told them that it's good that you experience shame because you've done lots of bad things.
- 14:41So shame in our society has seen as, as long as you've, if you've done something bad.
- 14:47It's kind of like a get out of jail free card.
- 14:49If you feel shame about it, then that means you're still a good person, so everything's okay.
- 14:54So it's kind of a kind of a, yeah, it's a, it's a sneaky one interesting one.
- 15:01Mm-hmm.
- 15:01Isn't it?
- 15:02Yeah.
- 15:03Yeah.
- 15:04But the thing is shame is a really, really bad way to change someone's behavior in the media.
- 15:10Sure.
- 15:11Sure.
- 15:11Like, if I shame this child, this child is talking, I shame him.
- 15:14He shuts up for now, but, uh, he's not gonna realize why.
- 15:19He's just gonna feel bad and pass that on.
- 15:22I was on a podcast a, a, a few weeks ago.
- 15:25Yeah.
- 15:25And this woman was talking to me, she said something really good about her aunt.
- 15:30Who was, when they were children, they were out eating ice cream.
- 15:33Mm-hmm.
- 15:33And this adult came up, came up to them and said, you shouldn't be eating ice cream.
- 15:38They'll make you fat.
- 15:39And these girls were a little bit pudgy, but you know what they did?
- 15:41They could have felt so shame there.
- 15:43'cause that's what he was trying to do.
- 15:44He was projecting his.
- 15:45His own beliefs and fears onto them.
- 15:48These girls, they could have dropped their ice cream run away.
- 15:52Mm-hmm.
- 15:53So many things that could have happened to shame themselves for the rest of their lives.
- 15:56Yeah.
- 15:56But you know what they did?
- 15:57They laughed in his face and continued to eat their ice cream.
- 16:01Mm-hmm.
- 16:01And this is the power of breaking free of shame.
- 16:04Nobody can shame you unless you have that inner narcissist activated that agrees with you.
- 16:09And this is the power.
- 16:10This is what I do.
- 16:11I help people to break up with that narcissistic shame voice.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:15And this is really different from what everyone else is saying.
- 16:18Yeah.
- 16:18Everyone else out there, they're talking about getting comfortable with shame.
- 16:21Even people like Brene Brown, who I really love and respect.
- 16:25Mm-hmm.
- 16:25Um, she, all of these people are talking from inside the ca the shame cage.
- 16:30Mm-hmm.
- 16:30They're talking from, from inside a culture where shame is normalized.
- 16:34And shame is just part of what it is to be human, and we just have to cope with it and get on with our lives and accept that shame is good, is part of what it is to be human.
- 16:44I, I've really come to see that it's not that shame, you know, if you look at the story of Adam and Eve, you know, you can see that as an allegory of shame, but shame does not have any positive attributes.
- 16:57If we look at anger.
- 16:58Somebody's crossed my boundary, I get angry.
- 17:02Sure.
- 17:02That's a good thing I need to tell you to stop.
- 17:05Yeah.
- 17:05And, and don't come any further.
- 17:06This is a powerful thing.
- 17:08Sometimes anger can get outta control.
- 17:10Yes.
- 17:10Mm-hmm.
- 17:11But we need anger.
- 17:12We need anger.
- 17:13Um, you know, and so other emo all the other emotions, there's a point, there's a function to them.
- 17:20Right.
- 17:20But when we come to shame.
- 17:23There's nothing.
- 17:24Right.
- 17:24Shame does not help anyone.
- 17:27Shame is a tool of control domination.
- 17:30It's always a manipulation every single time.
- 17:33Mm-hmm.
- 17:34When I shame someone, if I shame you now.
- 17:36Mm-hmm.
- 17:37Mm-hmm.
- 17:37Um, you know, like we talked about, I'm just passing on my own shame, so Right.
- 17:43It's a, and it's a manipulation every single time because I'm trying to.
- 17:47Gaslight you into thinking that it's you rather than me that wants something, you know?
- 17:51Right, right.
- 17:52Yeah.
- 17:52So it's very, very manipulative and it's so, so normalized, absolutely everywhere.
- 17:59Mm-hmm.
- 17:59Not just amongst women everywhere, of course.
- 18:02Men as well.
- 18:03I mean, look at the hustle culture.
- 18:05Mm-hmm.
- 18:05And women are part of that as well.
- 18:06This is very shaming, right?
- 18:08Yeah.
- 18:08We're taught that if you just shame yourself enough, then you'll pull up your socks and get better.
- 18:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:14What's wrong with me?
- 18:16Yeah.
- 18:16Yeah.
- 18:17And we're, we're, we believe that this is why people have been shaming themselves for 40, 50, 60 years.
- 18:23Look, don't believe me.
- 18:24See where it's got you.
- 18:25Mm-hmm.
- 18:26Yeah.
- 18:26How has that helped?
- 18:28Yeah.
- 18:28How's that working for you?
- 18:29That shame?
- 18:29Right, right.
- 18:30Let me tell you.
- 18:32If you're trying to manifest something big in your life, shame is gonna anchor you and make sure you don't get that.
- 18:39It's, it is really massive reason why people don't manifest what they want.
- 18:43'cause they're carrying all this shame may, so a lot of the times it's unconscious shame that they're not even aware.
- 18:49Yeah.
- 18:49Shame.
- 18:50Shame is also the root of narcissism, you know?
- 18:53Mm-hmm.
- 18:53Mm-hmm.
- 18:53This is why narcissists, you know, look at Donald Trump or whatever, you know?
- 18:56Mm-hmm.
- 18:57If, if he was really, if he really was a psychopath and didn't care about other people, he gets, he gets angry when people make jokes about him because it triggers his shame.
- 19:06Mm-hmm.
- 19:06That's repressed down there.
- 19:08So he, he does, he does.
- 19:11He, he has a bunch of repressed shame, and that's what narcissism is.
- 19:14Narcissism is repressed.
- 19:15Shame gone, taken over, you know, and.
- 19:19People like Brene Brown, for example.
- 19:21She says that if you don't experience shame, that would make you a narcissist or that would make you a psychopath rather.
- 19:28Mm-hmm.
- 19:28But if we look at psychopaths carefully, not having shame is not the problem.
- 19:33The real problem is that they don't have empathy, that's the problem.
- 19:37And psychopaths don't experience empathy.
- 19:41So they can't experience shame.
- 19:43Narcissists are a different story.
- 19:44The the rest of us, um, the, the, the funny thing is when you look at the facts and the reality of how shame works with the body and the nervous system mm-hmm.
- 19:54Mm-hmm.
- 19:55When we experience shame, it actually shuts down our ability to empathize.
- 20:00So it, it kills our ability to empathize.
- 20:02Even with ourselves.
- 20:04We are like, go in for the kill and punch ourselves.
- 20:06Okay.
- 20:06We gotta, okay.
- 20:08And that's what shame does.
- 20:09It makes we lose, it kills our empathy and that's, that's, we don't need more shame, we need more empathy.
- 20:17Thank you very much.
- 20:17Right, right, right.
- 20:19That's the real problem.
- 20:20Okay.
- 20:21Okay.
- 20:22So when we know of, um, people who are doing all kinds of incredible things but are still feeling stuck after doing all the mindset work.
- 20:39What's really at the root cause?
- 20:41Is it the fact that everything, the subconscious and it's stuck in your body, like what's going on there from your perspective?
- 20:49Yeah, it's in your body.
- 20:50Your nervous system is tensing, and this is the thing, I mean, it's one, one of the reasons that like this is what visibility blocks are a shame.
- 20:59You know, people afraid to show up.
- 21:01And like even when you do show up, and I've experienced this personally along with my clients, even if you're doing all the things and showing up, shame says you're not okay.
- 21:11There's something wrong with you.
- 21:12You've gotta hide.
- 21:13So we're not showing up authentically when we're carrying shame and not pretty much.
- 21:18We all have shame.
- 21:19We've been taught shame, right?
- 21:21It's been intergenerational.
- 21:23Shame is a taught, it's not even a real option.
- 21:26Yeah.
- 21:26It's taught, it's a control mechanism.
- 21:28It's a construct that we as a society have taken on and we've been told that it's good for you and that you need shame in order to be good person.
- 21:36But as I said.
- 21:37Shame doesn't work to make people better.
- 21:39Right.
- 21:39Shame makes people worse.
- 21:41Shame makes, when you're carrying shame, you're, you're, you're telling yourself, I'm not good.
- 21:45I have to hide.
- 21:46It puts us into survival mode, right?
- 21:48So we feel like somebody says something, we wanna, yeah, we wanna hit them, we wanna kill them.
- 21:52We're feeling like, yeah, it's, it's hitting that survival part of us.
- 21:57So we feel threatened.
- 21:58It's not, that's not a place to start the changing behavior, right?
- 22:03Yeah.
- 22:03The long term.
- 22:04In the short term, it looks very impressive and this is why therapists, this is why coaches, everybody uses it.
- 22:10It's been so normalized, but it's so toxic.
- 22:13And when people experience the shame.
- 22:15They pass it on you, either it's not something that you can't digest.
- 22:19Right?
- 22:19And this is why, you know, people saying sit down and feel your shame.
- 22:22It can be very dangerous for lots of people because then people go into all those self attacking thoughts.
- 22:27Mm-hmm.
- 22:28And where does shame lead?
- 22:29At the bottom.
- 22:30At the bottom.
- 22:30Like, it's not like, it's not like sadness.
- 22:33You experience sadness and then you experience anger, you experience something else.
- 22:37Shame isn't like that.
- 22:39You, you sit down with your shame and what's underneath it.
- 22:42More shame.
- 22:43Mm-hmm.
- 22:43What's underneath that?
- 22:44More shame.
- 22:45It's a bottomless pit of shame that eventually comes to place where it says you might as well not be alive.
- 22:51Mm.
- 22:51And you know, shame has done that to me, it's made me feel that way.
- 22:55And I don't believe that people would ever, you know, take that final act if shame were not involved.
- 23:00Mm-hmm.
- 23:01We need to have shame in order to feel, there's no matter how bad things get in your life, shame needs to be there.
- 23:07To say there's no point.
- 23:08You're, you're a waste of oxygen, or whatever that voice says.
- 23:11Mm-hmm.
- 23:12And for us to actually take that, take that action.
- 23:14Right, right.
- 23:15We know shame is a, and shame is in so many, like up to genocide, like shame is essential part of the substrate there that gets passed on and, you know, not dealt with and reinforced.
- 23:28So shame is a really serious thing.
- 23:31Yeah.
- 23:31But, but we're, it's so normalized and we do it all the time.
- 23:35Right.
- 23:35We see it everywhere.
- 23:36People do it to their parents, teachers, teachers do it to their students, parents do it to their kids.
- 23:41Mm-hmm.
- 23:41It's, uh, it's happening constantly.
- 23:44It's so pervasive mm-hmm.
- 23:45That people, you know, people just see it as part of what it is to be human.
- 23:49And this is where, right.
- 23:50Yeah.
- 23:50Where I come in to tell people really, no, wait a minute.
- 23:55Yeah.
- 23:56Wait a minute.
- 23:57Reality check.
- 23:58You do not need shame.
- 24:01Yeah.
- 24:01Stop shaming yourself.
- 24:03Yeah.
- 24:03And it's like we're, we're, we're, we're hostage.
- 24:05It's like we have, um, you know, a Stockholm syndrome with shame.
- 24:09We're we as a society are addicted to it.
- 24:11We're shooting up on a shame.
- 24:12Right, right.
- 24:14Because we're thought, oh, I need shame.
- 24:15It's like we're, we're unconsciously stuck there.
- 24:19Right.
- 24:19Your body can get used to any kind of emotion.
- 24:23Shame is so pervasive with so many us.
- 24:25Right.
- 24:25And, and so hidden as well.
- 24:27You know the Exactly.
- 24:29Look at it.
- 24:30Yeah.
- 24:31So the shame is huge.
- 24:33Yeah.
- 24:33Shame is what's keeping women down in the world.
- 24:35Yeah.
- 24:35Yeah.
- 24:36And uh, this is why I work with a lot of women who are really ready to rise and move beyond their shame and move into that next level.
- 24:43Because like I said, shame is the opposite of authenticity.
- 24:46When you're carrying shame, you, shame tells you, you are not good enough as who you are.
- 24:50You have to hide.
- 24:51You have to.
- 24:51And physiologically, this is what shame does to you.
- 24:54It makes you hide.
- 24:54Right, right.
- 24:57Pull in.
- 24:57Yeah.
- 24:58I need to go into my survival space'cause I'm being attacked right now.
- 25:02Right.
- 25:03That's not, that's not where you wanna start making real changes.
- 25:06That's, that's the wrong place to start.
- 25:09We need to start by separating the behavior from the person.
- 25:13And this is how we, we, we make long-term changes.
- 25:16We don't blame the person and do ad ho attacks.
- 25:19We, we talk about the behavior.
- 25:21Mm-hmm.
- 25:21And how people expand and become more comfortable with who they are.
- 25:25Right.
- 25:25So that you can really show up in all your power and people can feel that we've gotta reclaim our shameless.
- 25:31This word shameless.
- 25:32It's an insult, you know, in our society, but we, I wanna reclaim that word.
- 25:37Mm-hmm.
- 25:37Because every single other word in the English language that ends in LES is homeless, hopeless.
- 25:42You know, it means you don't have any of that thing.
- 25:44But usually when we call someone shameless, it's an insult.
- 25:47And often those people are acting out of repressed shame.
- 25:51If you think of someone who's on mm-hmm.
- 25:52You know, alcohol or something.
- 25:53Mm-hmm.
- 25:54Shame kind, the alcohol kind.
- 25:56This is why we drink.
- 25:58For, and that's why alcohol shame is essential component for addictions as well.
- 26:02Because you know, when you drink, puts the mute button on shame for a few hours.
- 26:07Right?
- 26:08Right.
- 26:08And then the cycle spins out, you know, so I've been on, I've been on podcasts about alcoholism, an addiction.
- 26:14Mm-hmm.
- 26:14And even bulimia and what's on, what do they all have in common?
- 26:18Shame.
- 26:19Shame.
- 26:19Yeah.
- 26:19Shame is really the driver of all of these things.
- 26:22'cause it's, you know, bulimia, anorexia, you want it, it's self-attack.
- 26:26Yes, of course.
- 26:27And this is, this is the definition of shame.
- 26:29Yeah.
- 26:30Alcoholism, all kinds of addictions.
- 26:32Yeah.
- 26:32It's trying to cover up that shame and, you know, but shame is there.
- 26:36Shame is the driver, and we can cut it off.
- 26:39We can take back our power by rejecting this shame that we've been fed for thousands of years as a society.
- 26:45Right.
- 26:45You know, we need to, we don't, we don't need it.
- 26:48The only person that benefits from shame is the people pulling the strings at the top, and that's not, you take back your power, take back your right, right.
- 26:56Integrity, become who you really are.
- 26:58Stop trying to hide.
- 26:59And when you stop hiding and become who you are, that start living shamelessly, people really feel that people can respond to it because it's so freaking rare.
- 27:10Well, I was, I was just gonna say, it's probably such a rarity that people are in awe and just want to come closer to those who live Shameless, right?
- 27:20Yeah.
- 27:21Shameless is authentic.
- 27:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:24Love it.
- 27:24Shame.
- 27:24Love it.
- 27:25Shameless is authenticity.
- 27:27Reclaim, you're shameless.
- 27:28This is how you reclaim.
- 27:29Find out who you really are.
- 27:30'cause when you're carrying shame, you're hiding.
- 27:32You're like, of course good enough.
- 27:33Something's wrong with me.
- 27:34I've gotta hold up my barrier.
- 27:36And we don't even know who we are'cause we're too busy attacking ourselves all the time.
- 27:41Yeah.
- 27:41We won't know who we are'cause we're not coming through a full lens.
- 27:44That's clear.
- 27:45Yeah.
- 27:45It's, it's, it's got, you know, history piled up upon history and as a result, we can't see who we really are until we come to.
- 27:56You and get the support and the brilliance that the work that you do around everything that you do to support your clients.
- 28:05So good.
- 28:06Um, this conversation has been incredible.
- 28:09I'm sitting here going, yes, yes, I can.
- 28:11Hmm.
- 28:12This is good.
- 28:13I can see this.
- 28:14I can hear this.
- 28:15I can.
- 28:16Stand this.
- 28:17Isn't that interesting?
- 28:18I'm gonna take life through a new lens and look at where it is in my world that I am experiencing thinking about feeling shame.
- 28:30Exactly.
- 28:31And when are you shaming yourself?
- 28:32Even in little ways, drop something, I'm stupid.
- 28:35That's shaming guys for sure.
- 28:37That's shaming any kind of attack on the person.
- 28:40And watch you'll, if you go around like this homework, like go, go out tomorrow and have a look and see how often you see people shaming each other.
- 28:49Watch how you, how that voice inside your head.
- 28:52That narcissist shames you.
- 28:53Yeah.
- 28:54You pop something.
- 28:54Oh my god, you're so, I'm so stupid.
- 28:57Yeah.
- 28:57Yeah.
- 28:57That is shaming.
- 28:59And we, when we stop shaming ourselves, for most of us, when we stop shaming ourselves, we, we stop shaming other people.
- 29:05We, we only shame others to the degree that we shame ourselves.
- 29:09Love that.
- 29:10That's not, not true for, you know, narcissists and 70 psychopaths.
- 29:13Sure.
- 29:14But for most of us that are, you know, fairly sound of mind, that's the truism.
- 29:20Nice.
- 29:20Love that.
- 29:21Love that.
- 29:23Is there any, this has been golden.
- 29:26Absolutely incredible.
- 29:28Such a great conversation.
- 29:30And there's two things that I wanna say.
- 29:32One.
- 29:34Women listening thrive after 45.
- 29:37Yes, we can do this.
- 29:39Yes, there is availability to understand ourselves in a brand new way through a new shameless lens.
- 29:48Yes.
- 29:48And when we do that.
- 29:50When you do that for you, by you, because of you, everything around you will change.
- 29:55Just like Emma shared.
- 29:57You know when people who do this work and are shameless, the energy that exists as a result changes not only their world, but all those who are in contact with them.
- 30:09Near and far, absolutely.
- 30:11And right.
- 30:11So many things like people pleasing, so many things that women complain about are shame.
- 30:17Yeah.
- 30:17People pleasing, imposter syndrome, all that.
- 30:19You know how many people please other people.
- 30:22Mm-hmm.
- 30:22That's because you're not, you're not, you, you have all this shame.
- 30:25You're trying to impress someone else.
- 30:28Get rid of that narcissist.
- 30:29Break up with that narcissist.
- 30:31And I have, I have an, I have a, A system if you'd like to hear it, about how to, yes.
- 30:35Yeah.
- 30:35Break that shame attack when it strikes.
- 30:38Yeah.
- 30:38And it can, I mean, I've had shame attacks.
- 30:40Mm-hmm.
- 30:40Shame.
- 30:41When shame attack is much, it's much stronger than even a fear attack.
- 30:46'cause it's like you are like attacking you.
- 30:50That, that really going for you.
- 30:53Your body shuts down.
- 30:54You, you're, you go red, you feel the heat.
- 30:58Your body goes, you know, this is, this is what shame does to you.
- 31:02It makes you go inside your shell and also become more narcissistic.
- 31:06'cause you're just thinking about yourself.
- 31:07You're not thinking about anyone else.
- 31:09You just go inside yourself.
- 31:10So it's not good for anyone.
- 31:12It's not good for you.
- 31:13Nobody wins.
- 31:14Yeah.
- 31:15So lose lose.
- 31:16So the, the way, when, when shame strikes, this is what to do.
- 31:20Mm-hmm.
- 31:20It's called break.
- 31:21B-R-E-A-K.
- 31:23Mm-hmm.
- 31:23So the first one is, you know, recognize that voice that says you've got a you.
- 31:28I don't know that you're too old.
- 31:30Yeah.
- 31:30Recognize this isn't your voice.
- 31:32It's a spell.
- 31:33We're all collectively under this spell this trance state.
- 31:37So you catch it, you interrupt it.
- 31:39Don't overthink it.
- 31:40Just name it.
- 31:41This is the trance and really disrupts the loop instantly.
- 31:44Mm.
- 31:44And shame is a trance that we're collectively under.
- 31:48Mm-hmm.
- 31:48So you, we want to go onto the next one, which is our refuse to engage you.
- 31:54Don't I try to argue with the Trumps love.
- 31:56Do you?
- 31:57You don't argue with the Trumps.
- 31:59You don't argue with a narcissist either, right?
- 32:01That's what, that's why Dr.
- 32:03Ramini says, don't go deep.
- 32:05Don't defend.
- 32:06Don't engage, don't explain, and don't personalize.
- 32:10Just say, not today.
- 32:12Not today.
- 32:13You don't.
- 32:13You don't have to be polite to this thing.
- 32:14Mm-hmm.
- 32:15So many of us are out there trying to be polite to this voice when it's trying to kill you.
- 32:19You know?
- 32:19Yeah.
- 32:19When we're taught and told that this voice is trying to look after you, it's trying to keep you safe.
- 32:24That's a huge gaslight as well, because just like narcissists, they're, they'll punch you in the face, kick you in the balls, and then tell you, I'm trying to protect you.
- 32:34They are not trying to protect you.
- 32:35This inner right, this inner voice is not trying to protect you.
- 32:38Guess what?
- 32:39It's out for itself.
- 32:41It's out for itself.
- 32:42It's not out for you.
- 32:44So don't en don't engage.
- 32:46Not today.
- 32:47Mm-hmm.
- 32:47Not today, Satan.
- 32:48Don't, you don't need to be, don't owe it any courtesy.
- 32:51Then you wanna expose the lie.
- 32:53So he, okay.
- 32:54Mm-hmm.
- 32:55Had the shame-based programming.
- 32:57This is control.
- 32:58This is not my story.
- 33:00Mm.
- 33:00And really just speaking that disarms its power.
- 33:04Mm-hmm.
- 33:04And I talked about how shame kind of does a full body hijack.
- 33:08Right?
- 33:08So we wanna, we need to come back to the body and this is anchor in truth, anchor in your body, come back to your body, feel your breath, plant your feet, say your name the year.
- 33:20And really you could even, mm-hmm.
- 33:22Give your mind your nervous system unsafe.
- 33:25I'm sovereign.
- 33:26I'm still here.
- 33:27We're still good?
- 33:28Mm-hmm.
- 33:28So that's a, and then Kate is kick it out.
- 33:33So shake it off, stomp it out.
- 33:35The say it.
- 33:35This is not mine.
- 33:36This is inherited shame.
- 33:38Yeah.
- 33:38This is not yours to carry anymore.
- 33:41And literally shake it off your body.
- 33:44Um, this is what, you know, animals do after they've been hunted.
- 33:47Yeah.
- 33:48They survive, they actually physically shake it off and then, you know, five years later they're not sitting there.
- 33:53Oh my God.
- 33:54Yes.
- 33:55Oh me.
- 33:55Oh my God.
- 33:56I'm something.
- 33:57Animals don't do that.
- 33:58And animals that are domesticated do that because they're taking on our toxic shame.
- 34:03But we don't have to do that anymore.
- 34:05We can break the cycle for ourselves.
- 34:07And like you said, everyone, every animal, every being around you will feel that shamelessness.
- 34:13Mm-hmm.
- 34:13And that that is.
- 34:14Power.
- 34:15That is an elevating, that's an inspiring energy that is very rare in the world today.
- 34:21Love that, and such a simple, um, acronym Break.
- 34:27Thank you so much for sharing that and giving us some concrete.
- 34:32I can go do this, I can practice this.
- 34:34I can become aware and I can actually respond and take ownership and responsibility and kick the narciss system narcissist out of my inner critic brain.
- 34:47Thank you very much.
- 34:49Thank you, Emma.
- 34:50Is there anything that you would love to share before we close off today?
- 34:55Is there anything that you haven't shared?
- 34:57I know there's lots, but is there, is there one golden nugget that you wanna end with?
- 35:04You don't need shame.
- 35:06Yeah, you don't, you don't need a for anything.
- 35:09It may, it doesn't make you better.
- 35:11It makes you worse.
- 35:12There you go.
- 35:13It makes you, it makes you narcissistic, it makes you self-centered.
- 35:17It makes you unhappy.
- 35:19Stop shaming yourself and stop shaming other people.
- 35:22Break, you can break that cycle for, for yourself and for the world.
- 35:26It can start with you.
- 35:28Yeah.
- 35:28And um, I have a, I have a free gift.
- 35:32Mm-hmm.
- 35:32If I could talk about that.
- 35:33Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:34Yeah.
- 35:34So it's.
- 35:35Five signs that it's time to break up with your five signs.
- 35:39It's time to break up with your inner narcissist.
- 35:40So if you've, if you're listening to this and they, oh my God, yes.
- 35:43I do shame myself a voice.
- 35:45It does shame me a lot.
- 35:46Yeah.
- 35:47And, uh, you know, I can see how it's holding me back.
- 35:50Mm-hmm.
- 35:50This, uh.
- 35:51It's a checklist.
- 35:53You can see five signs that it's actually time to break up with that, and it's also got concrete steps beyond what we spoke about today about how to really put that in place.
- 36:03And you can find that@tinyurl.com slash.
- 36:07Not today, narc.
