- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for March 15, 2026 When venting becomes a problem How constant
- 0:06complaining hurts your spouse A bonus post today As I wrote about criticism,
- 0:11I realized there was a side issue that needed to be addressed Do you complain
- 0:15to your spouse about things over which they have no control?
- 0:17It could be politics, work, or how people drive Can you guess which of those I do?
- 0:23Sharing frustration with someone we share life with is natural In small doses,
- 0:27it's not an issue But when it becomes a constant stream, it's a problem.
- 0:31I speak here out of my own guilt.
- 0:34My wife let me know, more than once, that she was tired of me always complaining.
- 0:39And there's a vicious cycle at work. When I complain about something to her,
- 0:42I want a response. If she is silent, that pushes me to keep complaining.
- 0:47What's weird here is I don't think of myself as all that negative.
- 0:50But when I look at my wife's complaints about my complaints, I see she is right.
- 0:54For me, I believe this is a learned behavior.
- 0:57My mother complained about everything and everyone, and I picked up the habit.
- 1:01I suspect at a young age, it was an attempt to make her like me.
- 1:04The other thing is, I talk a lot.
- 1:07Most of what goes on between my ears spills out of my mouth.
- 1:11And when what is happening between my ears is critical, then that is what comes out.
- 1:15Understanding why I do this doesn't make it acceptable. But looking at it honestly
- 1:19has pushed me to change in two ways.
- 1:21First, I work to complain less
- 1:23to my wife. And second, I am trying to change what goes on in my head.
- 1:27Is this a negative dynamic in your marriage? If your spouse has ever told you,
- 1:32even once, that you complained too much, believe them.
- 1:35This is Paul, and apparently Endo's complaining is not doing marriage well.
