- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Running Injury Rehab.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The diagnosis is only part of the story.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Aidan O'Flaherty.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: When I first started writing this article,
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I found myself writing a more traditional piece on running injury rehab.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: The importance of a good subjective history,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: accurate diagnosis, load management and progressive rehab.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: All of that is key and I will touch on these things throughout the article.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: But I also wanted to write something that felt a little more reflective
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: and practical based on what working with runners has taught me.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Over the past 7-8 years of solely working with runners,
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: I feel I have gained some great insights into different training habits,
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: running cultures, beliefs and what it means to be a healthy runner.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I have been lucky enough to work with Olympic level runners from 800m all the way up
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: to the marathon.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: I also work with competitive club runners to those who are just starting out
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: and looking to run their local park run.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I wanted to share some insights that I have learned from working
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: with all these runners and experiencing different running cultures
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: and I hope you find it useful.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: The more runners I work with, the more I come back to a similar point.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Running injury rehab is rarely just about treating the painful area.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Of course, we know the diagnosis matters.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: The tissue involved matters.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Is it bone, tendon, muscle, neural?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: If we only focus on where the pain is, we often miss the bigger picture.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: What has this runner been prepared for?
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: What training have they been exposed to over time?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: What has changed in the last few weeks or months?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: How do they interpret their training plan?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Can they adapt when training is not going to plan
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: or do they feel like they must compete whatever is written
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: in their training program?
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: What is their belief around why they got injured?
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: These questions help us create the bigger picture.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: What has this runner been prepared for?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: One of the biggest things I've learned is that a runner's background matters.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: It starts with the younger athlete.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: We have a huge influence on the young athlete development
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: and I feel it is something we need to take seriously and create more awareness on.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I feel fortunate but also slightly uncomfortable at times to have treated hundreds
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: of young athletes who have done well in the sport but also many
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: who have had significant running related injuries or RRIs.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Some of these injuries come with potential long-term consequences,
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: particularly when relative energy deficiency in sport,
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: or REDS, is part of the picture.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Bone health is a good example.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: We know bone mineral density continues to develop into early adulthood,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: so adolescents and early 20s are a significantly important window.
