- 0:22Hello everyone.
- 0:23Welcome back to this week's episode of Mocktail Minutes.
- 0:26This is Bailey and this is Brianna.
- 0:28This week I am drinking a horchata what is it called?
- 0:33Horchata Latte Protein Coffee.
- 0:35Oh my gosh.
- 0:36Is that from the roasted?
- 0:37Okay.
- 0:38Yeah.
- 0:38Is it good?
- 0:39I like Ada.
- 0:40Yes.
- 0:41I think I've done this one before on here, but it, it smells like the cinnamon roll icing.
- 0:46Ooh.
- 0:47That sounds good.
- 0:49Yeah, that sounds good.
- 0:50I tried something new today.
- 0:52It's sparkling water keefer or keefer, you know, like the keefer?
- 0:57Yeah, like probiotics.
- 0:58Well, it's like in a sparkling water drink.
- 1:00It's some like local company.
- 1:02It kind of tastes like kocha.
- 1:04I got the guava.
- 1:05It's better than whatever one I did have.
- 1:06'cause I got two of'em.
- 1:07The other one that I had, I was like, I can't drink it.
- 1:09This one is okay.
- 1:10It does taste like alcohol though.
- 1:12So I feel like if you wanna trick yourself into being like, I'm drinking alcohol, although some people like that a little bit.
- 1:17I think this will be the trick, but it's by Buddha's Brew and it's sparkling Kafer.
- 1:23Keefer.
- 1:23I don't know how to say that.
- 1:24I say, everyone says it differently.
- 1:26I say ke.
- 1:28It's like quinoa.
- 1:29Yes.
- 1:31I listen to some podcasts and they'll say a word and I'm like, huh, am I saying it wrong?
- 1:36This one, I know you saying it wrong.
- 1:39I'm like, huh, am I doing that?
- 1:40Because I've been, I'm just gonna go with it.
- 1:43I've noticed that more with like semaglutide some people call it, or Yeah, semaglutide semaglutide.
- 1:50And I was like, well, I guess you could say it like that.
- 1:52Ah, semaglutide.
- 1:53Yeah.
- 1:55Whatever.
- 1:55I promise.
- 1:56I'm not an illiterate, I just have never looked at the pronunciation of things.
- 2:01Yeah.
- 2:01I'm like, so I call it keefer.
- 2:03Mm-hmm.
- 2:04But it could be a thing like caramel.
- 2:06Are you caramel or are you caramel?
- 2:08Oh, I say caramel.
- 2:10Oh, me too.
- 2:11Yeah.
- 2:11Or cran.
- 2:11Just like I say ant and not aunt.
- 2:14Oh, I say aunt.
- 2:15Mm-hmm.
- 2:16Yeah.
- 2:17I feel like there's a lot of words out there that we say differently and my power went out, so we're having some technical difficulties, but we're back and we're gonna see how this goes.
- 2:25Yeah, we're gonna keep on writing it out.
- 2:28It'll be good.
- 2:29We are talking about insulin resistance today.
- 2:33It's a very hot topic right now, and we are seeing it in so many of our patients slash clients.
- 2:41I What do.
- 2:42I do both.
- 2:43Like I see, I say clients if they're like self-pay, and I say patients if they're like insurance, which is, I don't think there's a rule for that, but that's what I do.
- 2:53I was just curious.
- 2:54Mm-hmm.
- 2:55But yeah, we're seeing a lot of people, especially those that have weight loss resistance, who are also having insulin resistance.
- 3:02It's, I mean, I haven't looked at the statistics, but I would say insulin resistance is definitely.
- 3:08Increasing.
- 3:09Oh yeah.
- 3:10I don't, and I don't even think we have good statistics because it's not something that's like regularly screened or like true tested for.
- 3:18So I mean, it's similar to like the diabetes statistics, right?
- 3:22Like we have a general like, oh, how many people have pre-diabetes, but there's so many people that are never screened for it.
- 3:28So it's like, well there's probably more but.
- 3:31For those of you, I think we've touched on it a couple of times, but we never really like dived in.
- 3:36Insulin resistance is basically your body not listening to insulin as effectively as it should be.
- 3:43And this usually happens like 10 to 15 years before you even have pre-diabetes.
- 3:46So most of the time people come to me and they're like, oh, my doctor took my fasting glucose, and like, it was totally fine.
- 3:54They just think like that's the same thing, or it was just a little bit elevated, but my A1C looks good, so it's fine.
- 4:00And I'm always like, ah, you need a fasting insulin.
- 4:03Yeah, because that measures how much insulin is floating around in your body after you've been fasting.
- 4:09So if you're fasting, there shouldn't be a lot because insulin doesn't really have a job it needs to be doing if you haven't eaten.
- 4:16Yes.
- 4:17So yeah, basically when you eat carbs, your body is breaking that down into glucose, enters the bloodstream, and that's when your pancreas releases insulin to signal to your cells to absorb that glucose.
- 4:29So when this insulin resistance is happening, cells are not responding properly and the pancreas will actually compensate by producing more insulin.
- 4:39Over time, this is what's then going to affect those blood glucose levels.
- 4:43So that's why if you look at the insulin, you can determine what's going on so much sooner.
- 4:49Yeah.
- 4:50And if you were to get like a normal fasting insulin, the ranges I think are anywhere between like 10 and 22 or two and 22 or two.
- 4:59And I've even seen like 25.
- 5:01I would say optimal, it should be under 10, like for sure.
- 5:07And I like to see it even under seven.
- 5:09So I feel like something between a four and a seven would be great.
- 5:13Anything over a seven, there's some sort of insulin resistance going on and for sure anything under or anything over a 10.
- 5:23You have insulin resistance.
- 5:25And so if you are someone who has been really struggling to lose weight or you just feel like you're tired all the time, or, I mean, I feel like I am.
- 5:33I.
- 5:34Just saying things that a lot of people have.
- 5:38But if you have a fasting insulin that's over 10, even over seven, there's some sort of insulin resistance going on, and that is gonna impact how much you are able or how easily you are able to lose weight.
- 5:50So a lot of people are thinking like, okay, well how do I, you know, how do I reverse insulin resistance?
- 5:57And I have seen a couple of things going around that's like, you can, you can like.
- 6:03You know, reverse it within weeks to a couple of months.
- 6:06And I think that's a little bit misleading.
- 6:08Like you can improve your insulin sensitivity in a couple of weeks or couple of months, but to actually reverse insulin resistance, it's gonna take like probably six to 12 months to see like a significant change depending on how much stuff you're doing and how consistent.
- 6:25Mm-hmm.
- 6:25Yeah.
- 6:26Yeah.
- 6:26So that's kind of thinking about the flexibility versus.
- 6:30If you're more focused in doing more of the things not, and again, we talk about all this all the time, like you don't have to be perfect.
- 6:36You don't have to be a hundred percent, but if you're fixing three things rather than one thing and being really consistent with those three things, you're gonna see results quicker.
- 6:45So it does take time, and of course that's always the most frustrating part, but you have to keep going because insulin resistance is really gonna cause a lot of downstream effects, especially on your metabolic health.
- 7:00So really, I guess backing up a little bit, insulin resistance.
- 7:02Like what causes it?
- 7:04Yeah.
- 7:04Sometimes like it just happens, it's genetics, it's lifestyle, it's environmental factors.
- 7:10Mm-hmm.
- 7:11But things like excess body fat, especially that visceral or abdominal fat, it's going to lead to more insulin resistance.
- 7:20So that's also something like when people are working to lose weight and they have a bunch of excess weight, it's gonna be harder to get.
- 7:28Not harder.
- 7:29What am I trying to say here?
- 7:31You're going to have higher insulin levels just because you have that excess abdominal fat.
- 7:36Yes.
- 7:36So as you lose weight, that's also going to help.
- 7:39Mm-hmm.
- 7:40Did I say that right?
- 7:41Yes.
- 7:41And I feel like that's what doctors tell you to do.
- 7:43Like for the most part, doctors aren't really touching it.
- 7:46Some of them are, and then when they do, they're like lose weight, it'll improve.
- 7:51But I feel like that's kind of frustrating because it's like, well.
- 7:55I'm having a hard time losing weight because I have insulin resistance.
- 7:57Mm-hmm.
- 7:58So it's like, but yes, if you lose some of that excess body fat, you will be more insulin resistance or more insulin sensitive just as a whole.
- 8:08Other things that cause it are physical inactivity, so being sedentary.
- 8:12High intake of refined carbs, sugars, processed foods, especially in large amounts.
- 8:18And then hormone imbalances like we, you know, like estrogen dominant estrogen dominance, or even like PCOS.
- 8:23So PCOS, one of the things that happens is you are just insulin resistant, which is why we see so many women that have PCOS are struggling with weight loss.
- 8:32And so, mm-hmm.
- 8:33And I've seen this constantly, like doctors being like.
- 8:37Metformin due to insulin resistance caused by PCOS.
- 8:40And then I'm like, oh, what's your fasting insulin?
- 8:42They're like, I don't know.
- 8:43I'm like, so they're just assuming it's happening, but you don't have anything to measure to be like, oh, this is what I was at baseline.
- 8:49Is this medication helping?
- 8:50Are these interventions helping?
- 8:52And I will say maybe aside from the PCOS, you did not get here overnight.
- 8:57You did not get insulin resistance because you stopped working out for three months and you've been eating more fast food.
- 9:04No, this is like a long time and it's a combination of a lot of these lifestyle factors.
- 9:10So that's why I tell people it's gonna take a little bit of time.
- 9:12Like you, your fasting insulin did not go up to a 15 because you just like didn't work out this summer.
- 9:19Yeah, or it's not because like.
- 9:21Easter like desserts from there?
- 9:22No, it's gonna be a combination of a bunch of different things.
- 9:26So I mean, yeah, there's a couple different causes there for it, but yeah, like did you mention stress or sleep?
- 9:32No, I didn't.
- 9:33That's another big one, which surprises a lot of people that stress affects your blood sugar.
- 9:39And now, I mean, we've been working with a lot of people using CGMs and people are literally seeing that happen.
- 9:45And it's so funny because everyone's like, you said this, but now, now I can see it.
- 9:51And I'm like, I promise I have not been lying to you like.
- 9:54It's science, it's, it's there.
- 9:55I've also seen it happen for myself, but stress causes blood sugar fluctuation.
- 10:00So stress and poor sleep can lead to insulin resistance as well.
- 10:05Mm-hmm.
- 10:06So, and it's not just to be like, oh, if your sleep sucks, you're, you're gonna be insulin resistant.
- 10:10Like, that's where we find the balance in finding, okay, what can we control at this point?
- 10:16And even speaking of like, bgs, so I've had a lot questions.
- 10:21How can I.
- 10:22Tell if I'm insulin resistant based on my CGM readings.
- 10:27Mm-hmm.
- 10:29I wouldn't say you could just like diagnose insulin resistance from a cgm, but I mean, there are some things that you could look at, like what are your spikes?
- 10:40Are you fluctuating sometimes, like if people aren't fluctuating a lot with meals, it could be.
- 10:47A sign of insulin resistance, or it could look like large glucose spikes after a meal.
- 10:53It could look like a slow return to baseline after you eat.
- 10:56It could look like just elevated fasting glucose.
- 10:59That's what I commonly see.
- 11:01Yeah.
- 11:01Or just a high average glucose.
- 11:04So, and also thinking too, I mean, when we eat carbs, you're going to have a.
- 11:11Spike.
- 11:12I mean, carbs are breaking down into sugar, but if you're eating like a quarter cup of beans, which are high in fiber, high in protein with chicken and avocado and bell peppers, like a taco bowl type thing, and you're spiking like 60, then it's probably insulin where since, because I would say that's a disproportionate spike to a smaller amount of carbs.
- 11:34Mm-hmm.
- 11:35Yeah, that's what I would say too.
- 11:37And, and like you said, kind of you're just kind of hanging out a little bit higher like.
- 11:41I'm never really dropping under one 20.
- 11:43Now that's not a perfect, you know, diagnosis.
- 11:45Like if you have a CG M I'm be, oh my gosh, I have insulin resistance.
- 11:48Like, get it tested.
- 11:50Your doctor can order it.
- 11:51You can order it online for$15.
- 11:53Like it's very accessible.
- 11:55But I would say using a CGM can help you be very strategic.
- 12:00And then if you know you have insulin resistance, I am encouraging you to wear it.
- 12:06At least a month especially for females, because your blood sugar is more susceptible to certain things at different times of the month.
- 12:14Like in your luteal phase, it's a lot more sensitive.
- 12:17Mm-hmm.
- 12:18So then you're able to see like, okay, what do I know stresses me out.
- 12:22Like, does that cup of coffee in the morning send me to one 30?
- 12:27Yeah.
- 12:27I really need to figure that out.
- 12:28You know, just staying up late.
- 12:30Make me do this the next day.
- 12:31Okay.
- 12:32I need to figure that out.
- 12:33Like, because then you have that tangible in your face like feedback where you're like, okay, I can't really BS myself anymore.
- 12:39This is what's happening.
- 12:40But then it also shows you, okay, this is what I need to be doing.
- 12:43And if you are insulin resistant or having weight loss resistance, I think it's frustrating to be like, I don't know, I feel like I'm doing all the right things.
- 12:49So when you have these key times throughout the day, it's like, okay, that's what I need to focus on because.
- 12:56Insulin resistance affects weight loss because it increases fat storage.
- 13:02And then if you already have high body fat, you are, you're becoming more insulin resistant.
- 13:07And it's like this perfect little storm and it makes it really difficult to get out of.
- 13:11So, And like we mentioned, insulin resistance is gonna affect weight loss.
- 13:16We know so many of our listeners here have questions about weight loss.
- 13:20We definitely wanted to touch on this because it's pertinent information to.
- 13:26So, yeah.
- 13:27Number one, elevated insulin is gonna promote that fat storage, like we talked about, insulin is an anabolic hormone, meaning it encourag your encourages energy storage.
- 13:37Mm-hmm.
- 13:37So when insulin is high, your body goes into that like fat storage mode.
- 13:42Of course it's gonna be hard to lose weight if you're in fat storing mode.
- 13:46Yeah.
- 13:46Other thing.
- 13:47So then, I mean, along with that, it's gonna reduce fat burning because insulin resistance prevents the body from.
- 13:55Like more efficiently assessing a accessing fat stores and it's gonna increase your hunger and cravings.
- 14:02So you're, if you're having more blood sugar spikes and crashes, this is going to lead to that like hanger type feeling.
- 14:09So we get into that cycle of overeating, undereating.
- 14:13That's what I often see where I, I mean, I really don't see a lot of times where we're overeating at every meal.
- 14:20It's more like we're undereating, undereating, overeating.
- 14:23Yeah, overeating.
- 14:23Lots of snacks.
- 14:24That's how I know what the day looks like.
- 14:26And then it's before bed when you're more resistant already as it is.
- 14:31So you're not processing those carb as wells and now you just increased them by a ton at one time.
- 14:36Exactly.
- 14:36And then you, you fall into just like that cycle.
- 14:38And so I think hearing this, you're like starting to put a couple of things together.
- 14:43Like, ooh, this affects it, this affects it, this affects it.
- 14:46This is what I'm doing.
- 14:46This is what I'm, this is what I'm doing.
- 14:48It's like, oh, okay.
- 14:49This makes sense.
- 14:50It also kind of impacts how your body builds muscle.
- 14:54So if you have some insulin resistance, you could be, you know, potentially losing lean muscle mass.
- 15:00We store sugar in the muscle, but we need our cells to be listening to insulin to let that sugar into our muscles.
- 15:09So if it's not, it's not getting there, you're not feeding your muscles.
- 15:12And then that loss of muscle mass gives you even worse blood sugar management.
- 15:19And then the other thing it does is it causes leptin resistance.
- 15:21So basically that hormone that tells your brain, like the hormone in your gut that tells your brain, oh, I'm full.
- 15:26I've, I've had enough.
- 15:27You're not able to listen that very much.
- 15:29So there's impaired satiety signaling, which means you will overeat in a sitting because you're like, oh, I don't, I don't feel full yet.
- 15:37And so, overeating, overeating, carbs, you know, you're gonna store, you're gonna store a lot of that.
- 15:43Your body's already having an easier time storing it.
- 15:46So it's just like this perfect storm, if you will.
- 15:50So, yes.
- 15:51Do we wanna kind of like drop a couple of things?
- 15:54That'll help with reversing insulin resistance.
- 15:57Yeah.
- 15:58I think just to kind of give you guys a starting point, I mean, yeah, obviously these are things that we work on with people and we, with my dietician, whoa.
- 16:08Formally metal takeover.
- 16:11We are working to kind of dive more into the blood sugar balancing pieces.
- 16:17We recently just.
- 16:18A group that used CGMs.
- 16:20And so it's been really fun to kind of use those and just overall look at different strategies that are helping different people and seeing how people's blood sugar reacts differently to different foods too.
- 16:31Mm-hmm.
- 16:32So it is something we help with.
- 16:34But overall, looking at your carb and protein balance is super important.
- 16:40And do you wanna talk more about this, like the ratio of carbs and.
- 16:45Yeah, and this is like generalized, so I feel like, you know, people, different people do better with different things, but I would say if you know, oh, I have some pretty severe insulin resistance, I would say matching your carbon protein intake at a meal, like a one-to-one ratio is very helpful.
- 17:01Now, don't do that.
- 17:02If you're having 10 grams of protein at your meal, like I'm talking, we're having 30 plus grams of protein at a meal, so I'm gonna match that 30 plus grams of carbs.
- 17:10Some people can get away with like a two to one ratio.
- 17:13I would say that's like a less severe insulin resistance.
- 17:17You're also working out, that's the thing, like you're lifting heavy so you need more of those carbs, mm-hmm.
- 17:22But using a CGM to see like, what is my carb tolerance?
- 17:25'cause like you said, I mean some people are having increases with just like 20 grams of carbs.
- 17:30That doesn't mean just take all the carbs out.
- 17:33You have to teach your body to be carb, like how to.
- 17:36Carb tolerant.
- 17:38So that's where you're choosing the really high fiber carbs.
- 17:40You're making sure you have protein at your meal, you're making sure you have a healthy fat,'cause fat is a really good, it really blunts that glucose absorption.
- 17:47So thinking like, okay, what are my carb quality?
- 17:50You know, I'm gonna be cutting out a lot of that processed food, a lot of the fast food, maybe trying to do like those whole food sources of carbs that are high in fiber.
- 18:00Mm-hmm.
- 18:00I would.
- 18:02Yeah.
- 18:02Carbs are kind of like one of the top things that really do adjust based on your workouts.
- 18:08If you have thyroid issues, if you do have insulin resistance, if you are in midlife area.
- 18:14Like there's so many different factors Yeah.
- 18:16That I adjust carbs with.
- 18:19Where protein, I would say is a little bit different because it's kind of more based on your size.
- 18:25Fiber, I mean at least 25 grams, everyone needs fat.
- 18:29Fat minimum of 60 grams.
- 18:32I think that's where carbs get a little bit tricky because there's so many factors to consider and even when we have guidelines of how people usually do best, it's not always what we need either.
- 18:44Yeah, yeah.
- 18:44We don't know.
- 18:45It depends.
- 18:45And so the different kind of carbs too, like some people do great with stuff like popcorn'cause it has a little bit of fiber in it.
- 18:53Other people.
- 18:54Horrible.
- 18:55I'm one of those people.
- 18:56Yep.
- 18:57Popcorn's not great.
- 18:58I'm not gonna be doing popcorn, especially by itself.
- 19:00Like pita chips.
- 19:02Yes.
- 19:02That's a good one.
- 19:04I'm like, I, they're healthy.
- 19:05I'm doing the healthy choice.
- 19:06Like, well, it's relevant, like the healthy is relevant, depends like what does your body need?
- 19:11And so that's why I just try to help people like, okay, really just look at your carb quality.
- 19:16The high fiber ones will be better.
- 19:18Fiber does help.
- 19:20With that natural GLP one production in the gut, so mm-hmm.
- 19:24That can help you out too.
- 19:26Yeah, we have to be looking at food quality, carp quality.
- 19:30I would say The next one is resistance training.
- 19:33That's like a non-negotiable.
- 19:34That's just it.
- 19:35Mm-hmm.
- 19:35You have to be, you have to be lifting weights because your muscle is your storage.
- 19:39Is your glucose storage.
- 19:41So you need that more.
- 19:42The more muscle you have, the more that you're really working towards building and maintaining that muscle, those little receptors, you start to build more receptors on your cell.
- 19:51So if you're having a hard time listening to insulin, the best thing that you could do is increase the amount of things listening for insulin, if that makes sense.
- 20:00So you start to use it better.
- 20:01Yeah.
- 20:01So Kara's like our queen of blood sugar on my dietician team, and she brought up just like glucose likes to have a job.
- 20:10And so I love, I kind of, I love saying that and telling people that I was like, glucose just needs a job.
- 20:15Cards aren't bad.
- 20:16Sugar isn't just like bad for you.
- 20:18I mean, no.
- 20:19Okay, that's another rabbit hole.
- 20:21But things aren't bad, but need it to do its job.
- 20:24It has a really important function in the body.
- 20:26Yeah, give it a job, give it muscles to work with and it's going to love that job.
- 20:31It doesn't love just hanging out and being there.
- 20:34No, it wants to be doing stuff.
- 20:36I love that because then it helps to like not demonize carbs.
- 20:39'cause carbs are great.
- 20:40Yeah.
- 20:40If you pull them out too much, you're gonna have the same issue.
- 20:42So I try to tell people that like, you have to find a balance.
- 20:45But building that muscle really gives glucose a job.
- 20:48There's, we can go into a rabbit hole about cardio.
- 20:51We really could.
- 20:52But I would say if you have insulin resistance, I would just really encourage walking after meals.
- 20:58Like if that's the only cardio you could do, great.
- 21:01Try to do it after meals, because then you're giving glucose a job, Mm-hmm.
- 21:06Using your muscles glucose is like, Ooh, I can go over here.
- 21:09Great.
- 21:10Two to five minutes.
- 21:12This doesn't have to be crazy.
- 21:14I would love it if you were doing five to 10 walking, doing air squats.
- 21:19Cleaning up your kitchen, doing something.
- 21:21But when you just sit there, eat, don't move, it's harder for your body to utilize those nutrients.
- 21:26And if you are already struggling, you wanna do everything that you can to give it a help to, to help it out.
- 21:32So movement after meals.
- 21:34Yeah.
- 21:34As your cardio.
- 21:35And it doesn't have to be like, oh, I have to change my clothes, get my tennis shoes, type thing.
- 21:39Like you can literally do the dishes.
- 21:41Mm-hmm.
- 21:42I mean, that will be helpful.
- 21:44You could.
- 21:45Do some air spots.
- 21:47Just something to move your body.
- 21:49And also like you don't have to walk in tennis shoes.
- 21:52I went on a walk last night in sandals.
- 21:54I mean, me too actually.
- 21:55It was kind of like a calf workout in some way because my calves were for me.
- 22:00Because you're like trying to keep them on your feet.
- 22:01Yeah, that was, I did that last night too.
- 22:03I was like, wow.
- 22:04Yeah, and then it was so windy.
- 22:06I was like resistant training with it because I was pushing Gannon the stroller, so I.
- 22:11First of all, why are you in flip floss and why are you outta breath?
- 22:14Like you do this walk all the time.
- 22:15I'm like, okay, but it's windy and I have my flip flops on and I keep pushing.
- 22:20I'm pushing 30 pounds in front of me, like, yeah, Ugh.
- 22:25Yeah, movement.
- 22:27I love it.
- 22:27And I like that you bring that up because I think that's a barrier.
- 22:29So be like, oh, I don't wanna get ready for a walk.
- 22:31I'm like, well, then don't just go.
- 22:33Don't.
- 22:34I walk, I mean, my hair's down blowing in my face.
- 22:37Yeah.
- 22:37Sometimes I have jeans and Yeah.
- 22:41I get that's not free everyone, but like you have to choose your heart.
- 22:43Either you're gonna be a little uncomfy in your jeans and get the walkin, or it'll literally take you 30 seconds to change your pants.
- 22:49Yeah.
- 22:50And I'm not saying go for 30 minutes, like just around the block.
- 22:52Okay.
- 22:53It'll be okay.
- 22:54Improved sleep and stress management.
- 22:56Those two are a non-negotiable.
- 22:59And again, you see it when you're wearing a CGM'cause it's like, oh, your movement could be perfect, your meals could be perfect.
- 23:06If your stress management is not regulated, you will have high blood sugar regardless of your meals and your movement.
- 23:12You have to really work on that cortisol and make sure it's not, you're not just riding cortisol all day long.
- 23:18And then sleep, I would say seven plus hours of sleep.
- 23:22There is some supplements that you can use.
- 23:24I don't know if we'll go into that.
- 23:25Maybe we'll do a different episode on that.
- 23:27But that's very much like, I recommend working with someone if you're like, is this a good supplement for me?
- 23:34that's what, yeah.
- 23:35I mean, I don't think we need to go in the supplements, just know that there are some supplements out there that can be helpful.
- 23:41So, Yes, work with someone and also like you have to do these other foundational pieces.
- 23:46You're not gonna out supplement your insulin resistance.
- 23:48No.
- 23:49You're not gonna out supplement.
- 23:50Yeah, exactly.
- 23:51And I think, I mean we've mentioned like berberine before, so berberine is one of'em, but like just because you take berberine doesn't mean you can eat a brownie at every meal.
- 24:00Correct.
- 24:01You still have to focus on the foundations and doesn't really.
- 24:05Yeah, I think that people think that, and I know there's a couple of companies that have like bourbon supplements with other things and they're like, take it before a meal.
- 24:14And it really lowers your glucose.
- 24:17You can wear a CG m and see for yourself that it is not significant.
- 24:21Is it better?
- 24:21Sure.
- 24:22Like it helps.
- 24:22Yeah.
- 24:23Like what?
- 24:23Two points to three points.
- 24:24Great.
- 24:24Any, anything is helpful, but I think people just think like, oh, all I need to do is take that and it'll be great.
- 24:28Problem solved.
- 24:29Yeah.
- 24:30It's not, is it helpful?
- 24:31Yes.
- 24:32But what's really helpful is doing all these little things, and I think that's why people think they need this really shiny thing.
- 24:37'cause they're like, oh, these are kind of little like me.
- 24:40But if you're really consistent, that's gonna help.
- 24:43And remember over time, like give yourself six months to a year and then see where's it at now.
- 24:49Because again, you didn't get here overnight.
- 24:51We just didn't.
- 24:52Yes.
- 24:53And as you work on these pieces, that will also equal the weight loss and a five to 10% reduction, your body weight will improve that insulin sensitivity.
- 25:02So, It's all these combinations of pieces that will work really well together to reduce that insulin resistance, help you lose weight and decrease your metabolic impact with high blood pressure, dyslipidemia issues chronic inflammation.
- 25:18Fatty liver, all of these things can be decreased when you focus on the insulin resistance side of things.
- 25:23Yeah, yeah.
- 25:24Making yourself more insulin sensitive, like am I listening to the insulin that my body is making?
- 25:31Total rabbit hole that we won't get into when I'm gonna leave it here is if you also have high triglycerides, I would really try to focus on that because that's causing a lot of inflammation.
- 25:43Making it easier to store fat, promoting that fat storage, making your body not listen to insulin.
- 25:49Everyone will say, oh, just stop eating saturated fat, I would say.
- 25:53Or you could increase your Omega-3, which then goes down the rabbit hole of why we should be decreasing Omega six.
- 25:59Yes.
- 26:00Any bottom unsaturated.
- 26:02Okay, because one thing that helps that we know is Omega-3, but you know what else helps to increase Omega-3 or that ratio is decreasing Omega six.
- 26:11So again, I'm not demonizing Omega six, but I'm just telling you it could help.
- 26:18Yes, that is it.
- 26:20And this is why we have a hard time staying on topic because it just, there's so many, there's so many holes that we can get into.
- 26:26Yeah.
- 26:26And there is nutrition is like Swiss cheese.
- 26:29I don't know.
- 26:29Yeah.
- 26:29It really is.
- 26:30And everyone is so different and there's a lot of different, like sometimes it's like a puzzle.
- 26:33It's like, okay, nothing is working just by itself in the body.
- 26:37Yeah.
- 26:38There's a lot of things going on.
- 26:39And so it's like, okay, well, like let's, it's like one of those like, you know, the little like memes where it's like the board.
- 26:46Yeah.
- 26:48Well, it's even, so the TikTok, her name's Janelle.
- 26:52Have you seen her stuff?
- 26:53I don't know.
- 26:54So she got famous like 2020 for, I mean, she was doing like bell pepper sandwiches.
- 27:00Everyone went crazy.
- 27:00She was doing the keto diet.
- 27:02Then she did macro counting, and then she's like, I think she has a cookbook or something.
- 27:07She, she sells something on TikTok.
- 27:09Yes.
- 27:09She's a wellness influencer.
- 27:11Yes, I know who you.
- 27:12So last week she came out and she's on a GLP one and people are pissed about it and so many people are making all these reels, like making fun of her and saying she's a liar.
- 27:22She hides all these things.
- 27:23And like I genuinely feel bad for her.
- 27:26Yeah.
- 27:26But I'm also like, why do you care so much about what she is doing?
- 27:31Since when is it a requirement to share every single thing you're doing because mm-hmm.
- 27:37All these wellness influencers.
- 27:39Like no one is telling the full story, and if you honestly think the GLP one is the only thing that has gave her results.
- 27:48Meanwhile, she's sharing her high protein meals now.
- 27:51Like she shares a lot.
- 27:52She does the workouts, like she's doing the things that go with the GLP one.
- 27:55Yeah, like you.
- 27:58She has shared for a long time.
- 27:59She hasn't been on a GLP one that long.
- 28:01Like you go back and you see her journey of like, she lost weight.
- 28:05She put on muscle, like she was doing the things.
- 28:08She just, I don't know if she goes into the detail of why she started using another tool, but just because somebody needs an extra tool to help them with something doesn't mean that what they're doing doesn't work.
- 28:20Does that make sense?
- 28:21And you can't expect like to eat the same and do the exact same everything as someone gonna get the same results.
- 28:27No.
- 28:27Because we're all so different.
- 28:28Yeah.
- 28:29And this is where I wanna just be like, stop comparing your journey to other people.
- 28:34Maybe if you would focus on what you are doing, you would have those results.
- 28:38Yeah.
- 28:39Well, and the other thing I see is we are always looking for an excuse.
- 28:42Like, oh, there's a reason why I am not losing weight.
- 28:45I'm broken'cause I have this.
- 28:47Yeah.
- 28:47And then so you're like, oh look like.
- 28:49They wouldn't have been able to lose weight either.
- 28:51They had to do this.
- 28:51It's like this weird thing.
- 28:52It's like just mm-hmm.
- 28:54You're not broken.
- 28:55You just need to do the things and if you need to bring on another tool, great.
- 28:58Everyone's body is so different but mm-hmm.
- 29:02Izing GLP one, it's, I was like, man, a little ignorant to think that way.
- 29:06I think now there's plenty from working with people outpatient.
- 29:10There is plenty of people on high doses of GLP ones who are not losing any weight'cause they don't do any of the other shit that we're talking about.
- 29:17A hundred percent.
- 29:19It will not just you, you have to be doing other work as well, or eventually it stops working or it just doesn't work at all.
- 29:25Like Yeah.
- 29:27I wonder where she felt the need to share that.
- 29:29I think PE people have been commenting like, oh, I think she started GLP one because people started noticing her changes, but she didn't really share anything that specifically changed.
- 29:38I don't know, but my opinion, I can always tell, like I can always tell when people are, oh, you probably started like a decent dose of a GLP one, but like to each of them.
- 29:45Mm-hmm.
- 29:46Yeah.
- 29:46And like if you're using it the correct way, I'm just like, who cares?
- 29:50Quit getting stuck in this.
- 29:51Compare.
- 29:53You don't need to know everyone's life story.
- 29:55I mean, could it have been helpful if she shared it?
- 29:58Maybe.
- 29:58But again, who cares?
- 30:01It's just her weight loss journey.
- 30:03And guess what?
- 30:03When you're following someone on social media, they're not gonna show you all the things they do.
- 30:08No.
- 30:08It's good things.
- 30:10Yeah.
- 30:11And even like you and I, I don't think we intentionally leave anything out, but like you don't know our entire lives either.
- 30:19Yeah, no.
- 30:21Nor does it really matter too.
- 30:23And I Exactly, I try to tell people Yeah.
- 30:24That's why we dunno.
- 30:26Yeah.
- 30:26Because I, I have a lot of women that are like, I.
- 30:29They're, they really are putting in the work and they have insulin resistance, or they have PCOS or they have something and they're like, man, it's just, I feel like I'm gonna be cheating if I start a low dose GLP one.
- 30:38And I'm like, that's not cheating.
- 30:39You're doing all the things metabolically.
- 30:42Your body needs a little bit of help.
- 30:43Like that has nothing to do with some other person who is completely metabolic healthy.
- 30:48And they're just deciding.
- 30:49They don't wanna clean up their diet and being like, oh, you only did it'cause of this, like.
- 30:54We're all different and it's not cheating.
- 30:56That's the other thing.
- 30:58I mean, now it's all about intention, right?
- 31:00Yeah.
- 31:00I guess you could say some people are cheating.
- 31:02Sure.
- 31:02But the, I feel like the, if you're stressed out about like, I don't wanna cheat you, you probably are not cheating.
- 31:07Mm-hmm.
- 31:08In that, how you're looking at it, you know?
- 31:09Exactly.
- 31:10It's, it's just time.
- 31:11We stop getting mad at other people.
- 31:14Focus.
- 31:14Give yourself that inward focus and decide, okay, what can I do in this moment to help myself?
- 31:22And just stop blaming outside things.
- 31:24Stop blaming the government.
- 31:25Stop blaming.
- 31:26Blaming all the things.
- 31:27You don't have money for a GLP one, or this person has more time like, yeah, because that's not gonna get stuck.
- 31:34It's really not all that stress.
- 31:37Is contributing.
- 31:40Stop blaming it on the prices of eggs.
- 31:42Like, come on man.
- 31:43Like, yeah, just do the basics.
- 31:46Be consistent.
- 31:47See what happens.
- 31:48I always tell people like, give something four to six months, and everyone's like, oh yeah, that's so long.
- 31:52Well, like four to six months goes by so fast.
- 31:54Okay.
- 31:55And how many years have you been wanting to change?
- 31:57Like you, what's the worst thing that happens?
- 31:59Do you feel better?
- 31:59Like, just see if I do these consistent things for four to six months.
- 32:04Something is gonna improve.
- 32:05Mm-hmm.
- 32:06Maybe you need longer than that.
- 32:07Most people do.
- 32:08But something is gonna improve, So if you sus, if you suspect some insulin resistance going on, I mean, you can get some lab work done, get your insulin tested, get your glucose tested, get your A1C tested, and your CRP, probably, those are good ones to start with.
- 32:25See where you're at there.
- 32:27And I would say number one, focus on.
- 32:30Fiber that's actually really helpful for blood sugar balancing focus on that movement throughout the day.
- 32:37Building muscle and that those are good places to start.
- 32:41Yeah.
- 32:42Yeah.
- 32:44Everyone.
- 32:44And then if you were like wanting to wear a CGM and wanting, know what the heck you're looking at or work with, I mean you could work with us just, you could work with someone that knows how to interpret that data and how to help you.
- 32:56'cause that can be overwhelming if you dunno what you're looking at.
- 32:59Yeah.
- 33:01So hope this was helpful and we'll be back next episode.
