- 3:02Benjamin Franklin is known for his many accomplishments, including his development of a set of virtues that he used to guide his behavior and improve himself.
- 3:12One of the virtues he identified was order, which he defined as letting everything have its own place.
- 3:20This virtue is closely related to the idea of controlled detention, as it requires the ability to focus one's attention on the task at hand, rather than allowing oneself to be distracted by other things.
- 3:36If number one set clear and specific goals.
- 3:41Set SMART goals.
- 3:42To clarify your ideas, focus your efforts and use your time and resources productively and achieve what you want at work.
- 3:52And in life.
- 3:54SMART goals is an acronym for this it's specific.
- 3:59It's measurable.
- 4:00It's attainable, it's realistic.
- 4:03And is time bound.
- 4:04That is a SMART goal.
- 4:07You can also break large tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks.
- 4:12When you break your goals down, it makes you less likely to procrastinate, which means you take action.

- 4:45But in today's world of the web, it is a tangled one.
- 4:49Indeed.

- 5:56Take regular breaks.
- 5:58It's important to give your brain a break so that it doesn't get tired and take a short walk stretch, or do something completely different.
- 6:07Especially if you hit a frustration.
- 6:10And you're likely to hit that.
- 6:12And then when you leave and get step away from it, you come back to it and it's fresh.
- 6:18Of course, you know, I'm going to say this, take a walk in nature, and this is a great reset button and a great way to keep that focus on track.
- 6:27For some inspiration.
- 6:29Let me share with you, Charles.
- 6:30Darwin's.
- 6:31Thinking I'm thinking path.
- 6:33And I I've talked about this before.
- 6:35Charles Darwin used to take a walk and he called it his thinking path and he would not focus on anything else.
- 6:42Just taking that walk.
- 6:44And some of his greatest ideas came to him when taking this walk.
- 6:49And.
- 6:51Our brains are meant to focus and our eyes are meant to focus in a forward motion and to look forward.
- 6:59Our posture is meant to look forward and walk forward and taking this break from the computer from the screen of your phone.
- 7:09I leave it all behind.
- 7:10Take a walk in nature.
- 7:12You're likely to come up with fresh and new ideas.
- 7:16So Charles Darwin did this.
- 7:18He would take a daily walk to exercise his mind and his body.
- 7:23He would do it to think and observe.
- 7:25And walking the same route each day from his house through shady woods and back along Hazel hedged lined field.
- 7:34Darwin referred to this as his thinking path.
- 7:38Where will your thinking path be?
- 7:40It will prove to be one of those good habits to get into on a regular basis and help you control your attention like a pro.
- 7:48Self-discipline it is helpful to build a strong sense of self-discipline stick to your goals and persevere through the difficulties that you will face.
- 8:00This will help you develop the habit.
- 8:02Of controlled attention over time.
- 8:06Practice mindfulness.
- 8:07Mindfulness is the state of being present and fully engaged in the current moment.
- 8:12It can be helpful to practice mindfulness, to improve focus and concentration.
- 8:18The basics of mindfulness practice are this number one set aside some time daily.
- 8:25Number two observe the present moment as it is Number three let your judgments roll by Number four return to observing the present moment as it is and number five be kind to your wandering mind.
- 8:42Reward yourself when you implement rewards to yourself when you have completed a task or a period of time focused you will find the motivation to continue the maintained focus.
- 8:58In conclusion remember that building of virtue like controlled attention takes time and practice and you will likely encounter setbacks along the way do not shame yourself just pick it up and be patient with yourself and keep working towards your goal Here are some quotes and inspiration for this week and it's also included in the virtue downloads at kathieowen.com/virtues.
