- 0:04Welcome to the libido lounge where we focus on all things love, lust, and libido.
- 0:09We believe that fabulous sex is important to health as exercise and good food.
- 0:15Fabulous women.
- 0:16Welcome back to another episode of the lounge.
- 0:18Today, we're gonna talk about libido, body image, self confidence, and especially these
- 0:25concepts as we go through hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause.
- 0:31Now I feel like one of the best times to actually prepare for menopause is about ten
- 0:39years prior to this happening.
- 0:40So if you're listening and you're in your late thirties and you're still feeling like you're
- 0:46far away, which you are, it's definitely worth considering listening still because the best
- 0:52time to really prepare for this is by starting to get your body in alignment, by starting to
- 0:56make sure you're making the appropriate developments and the changes to your adrenal
- 1:01glands, because once we hit menopause, we do still make some hormones, but the ovaries are
- 1:07largely not active anymore.
- 1:09And most of the sex hormone production that happens inside the body is now fully taken over
- 1:15by the adrenal glands.
- 1:17So one reason why menopause can be so hard on so many women is because, and there's lots of
- 1:23reasons, but one reason is because there has been so much stress for so many years and the
- 1:28adrenal glands are just not working and not pumping out the correct amount of cortisol, the
- 1:33correct amount of DHEA that they should, and they're basically just they're not getting the
- 1:39signal correctly from the brain.
- 1:41So, essentially, when we go through adrenal issues, a lot of people have heard of this as
- 1:46adrenal fatigue.
- 1:47Adrenal fatigue isn't really the right word because it's not like the adrenals wake up one
- 1:51day and they're like, I'm tired.
- 1:53I should take a nap.
- 1:54I'm right?
- 1:54That's not what's happening.
- 1:56What's actually happening to the body is the brain is not telling the adrenal glands, which
- 2:00produce our stress hormones, to work correctly.
- 2:04So in situations such as menopause and perimenopause, when that brain adrenal
- 2:11connection is dysregulated, when it's falling apart, when it's not working as well, then we
- 2:16get to menopause and we want the adrenals to take some of the slack of producing estrogen
- 2:21and progesterone and testosterone, but that signal from the brain to the adrenals is
- 2:25already dysfunctional, we can dysfunctional, we can have problems.
- 2:29So the more we can fix any brain adrenal dysfunction, any low or high cortisol, low or
- 2:35high DHEA prior to perimenopause and menopause, the easier this time can be.
- 2:41So that's kind of the opening to say, hey.
- 2:43This content is for a lot of you even if you're not in the perimenopause or menopause age.
- 2:48Now, basically, menopause in many ways and perimenopause is the adult version of the
- 2:54teenage version of going through puberty.
- 2:57Right?
- 2:57In puberty as teenagers, what's essentially happening is we're getting these widespread
- 3:02change and fluctuations in our body getting used to these hormones and these hormones
- 3:07cycling in different ways.
- 3:08And so that can create a lot of different emotions.
- 3:11It can create a lot of different feelings, all natural and all normal.
- 3:15And a lot of what happens, remember, if you go back to teenage years, 13, 14, when you're
- 3:21likely getting your menses for the first time, one of the things that can happen is there can
- 3:26be this huge level of, like, extra care about body image.
- 3:30And most of us care about body image throughout our entire life, but in teenage years, that
- 3:36that tendency is to be a little bit more hard on oneself, to have lower self esteem, to have
- 3:42days where you feel great, and then other days feel like like I remember freaking out because
- 3:47back in the eighties when bangs were so big, and I would do my bangs up super huge, like,
- 3:54these ginormous bangs.
- 3:55And I remember freaking out because I was having, like, a bad bang day.
- 3:59Right?
- 3:59And my bangs were not responding to, like, the curling iron, and they were not responding to
- 4:04the hairspray.
- 4:05And I remember just, like, throwing these crying fits being like, I can't there's no way
- 4:10I can go to school with bangs like this.
- 4:13Right?
- 4:13So that's essentially, there's changes of hormones on the brain.
- 4:17And so when we go through perimenopause and menopause, it's like a redoing of that time.
- 4:22And so one of the things that can happen is just like in those teenage years with bad bangs
- 4:27or whatever it was where you might feel like you're not as in your body, you might not as
- 4:32feel as beautiful, you might compare yourselves to others more, We're at the mercy of all of
- 4:37those types of of feelings coming up again because our brain is now shifting around to
- 4:44this new hormonal landscape.
- 4:46So what do we do?
- 4:49So one, finding a support group of women that are in similar situations to normalize this, to
- 4:55talk about it, to hopefully make light of it can be really helpful.
- 4:59It is one of the reasons why I do have my libido lounge monthly membership for a low
- 5:04price fee is because it's a way that people can come and actually talk to other women that are
- 5:10in similar situations, and it really helps to feel supported and feel the nourishment and
- 5:17share ideas, share what's happening, and build each other up.
- 5:21Right?
- 5:21So whether or not it's a support group like this, making sure that you are part of a friend
- 5:26circle that is really designed to build you up during this time and help with confidence,
- 5:31people that can remind you that you're beautiful.
- 5:34Right?
- 5:35These sorts of things become especially important at this change.
- 5:38And we do see such a relationship in libido between how we feel about our body, how we feel
- 5:46about our body image, sexuality.
- 5:49So it's really easy since these feelings can be quite strong.
- 5:53It's very, very easy to feel, like, during the menopause time period to be like, well, I'm not
- 5:59comfortable with my body.
- 6:00My hormones are changing.
- 6:01My brain feels crazy, so I'm definitely not interested in libido.
- 6:04So it takes a lot of effort, not only to keep the sex drive alive oftentimes as hormones are
- 6:10changing.
- 6:11And I do recommend hormone replacement therapy.
- 6:13Go back and listen to episode 24 where I talk more about that.
- 6:17But from besides that, it's also extremely important that we are are deeply considering
- 6:24the the impact that the body image and the self confidence during this time has.
- 6:28So, like I said, hanging out with other women who can build you up, you know, really avoiding
- 6:33a lot of circles of drama as much as possible and doing nice things for yourself.
- 6:40Right?
- 6:40It's, like, definitely would encourage you to work with, you know, with hormones, to work on
- 6:46all of the root causes.
- 6:48Remember, you can find root causes of the low libido on my libido my free libido quiz.
- 6:52But I definitely encourage you to do those to work on some of the physical things, but then
- 6:56from my and and that will help with the body image thing too because these physical things
- 7:00are gonna help with weight prevention and just feeling good in one side of body.
- 7:05Remember, when we feel good internally and we have energy, typically, we reflect an outward
- 7:10image, that is oftentimes more beautiful and more fit because we're taking care of
- 7:15ourselves.
- 7:16But then beyond that, like, what other things can be done?
- 7:19So this is an area where, in some ways, I encourage you to do things like a wardrobe
- 7:25revamp.
- 7:26You know?
- 7:26If it works into your budget, hire a fashion specialist, right, that can come in to your
- 7:32closet and can help you take you know, change your look up.
- 7:35Right?
- 7:36What sort of clothes make you feel beautiful?
- 7:39Do you like, would it be helpful to have a new hairstyle?
- 7:42And, obviously, these are external things.
- 7:44We wanna consider external and internal.
- 7:46But I don't know about you, but I get a new haircut or I do something that is good for me
- 7:51externally, and that can help me feel more beautiful.
- 7:54Right?
- 7:54So the external stuff can have that internal that internal sense.
- 7:58So what sort of things what sort of activities and this is an open ended question.
- 8:04Right?
- 8:04What sort of activities help you feel more beautiful?
- 8:08What sort of activities, what sort of words help you feel more confident?
- 8:12If you're, you know, if you're feeling during this time that you're just not not as
- 8:17confident, you don't feel as beautiful, and you feel a little crazy, and you feel a little sad,
- 8:21and then you feel joyous, and everything is just, you know, this roller coaster, what sort
- 8:27of things would be helpful for your partner to say to you?
- 8:30What sort of things would be helpful for your friends to say to you?
- 8:32And the more we can really instruct people that love us and want us to help us to say, like,
- 8:38Hey.
- 8:39If I'm responding this way, this is what I need to hear.
- 8:42Can you say this to me?
- 8:44Right?
- 8:44And it might feel, like, ingenuine, but they probably feel that way anyways.
- 8:48They just didn't know that that was the right thing to say at the moment.
- 8:51So it's not in genuine.
- 8:52It's actually usually just helping people understand how to take care of us.
- 8:56So the more we can instruct others around us to say, this is how to care for me during this
- 9:03time.
- 9:03This is what I need.
- 9:04Are you able to do this if I'm feeling this way?
- 9:07It can trickle down into supporting us to feel more confident.
- 9:10So these are a lot of external things.
- 9:13And then internal, this is where I do find that a lot of the mindfulness work becomes really,
- 9:20really important.
- 9:22And there's a lot of people that do, like, affirmations.
- 9:24Affirmations, for those of you that don't know, are almost these these things that we say over
- 9:29and over to ourselves again and again.
- 9:31Right?
- 9:31So an affirmation could be, I am beautiful.
- 9:34I am confident.
- 9:35I am sexy.
- 9:35Right?
- 9:36That could be an affirmation.
- 9:37But what we see in people that do studies on, like, mindfulness changes and the way the brain
- 9:43lights up when we do certain things like affirmations is the biggest change will occur
- 9:49when we actually really feel and believe what we're saying.
- 9:52So if you feel If you say, I am sexy, I'm beautiful, but the feeling inside is, I'm fat,
- 9:58I'm getting old, it's not gonna really do much for confidence versus, like, closing one eyes.
- 10:05And even if your current state is feeling fat and old, literally faking it, almost pretending
- 10:11to be like, well, what happens if I actually feel beautiful and sexy?
- 10:15What does that feel like?
- 10:17Because here's another thing that I think can be really helpful.
- 10:20It's a great time to take up pole dancing or some sort of S Factor or sensual dance classes.
- 10:25They're all over the country.
- 10:26So So I would look up sex, sensual dance, pole dancing, s factors, a lot of great types of
- 10:32different modalities out there.
- 10:34But one of the reasons to take classes like this is because, one, pushing the body to do
- 10:39something that is developing strength can help with self confidence, can help with that
- 10:43libido, especially during this difficult time.
- 10:46Two, from taking these sorts of classes myself where people are very scantily dressed in some
- 10:52of these classes, other classes less so, but they're very scantily dressed in a lot of these
- 10:56classes, and I've been in classes with women of every shape and size, like every curve, every
- 11:04itty bitty tiny woman, every shape and size you can imagine.
- 11:09And it is very interesting to observe because in a lot of these classes, there's an observing
- 11:15role where somebody is, say, the the dancer that everybody is observing.
- 11:20And when you're in the observing role, which can sound scary if you've never done this to
- 11:25get observed, but it's actually really powerful on both sides.
- 11:29It's won by women that love and care in in the group to be witnessed by other women that are
- 11:35cheering you on, that are supporting you.
- 11:37No matter how elementary you are, it's really, really amazing for confidence.
- 11:42But secondly, as an observer, what is so amazing is being in this room of these other
- 11:47fabulous women of any different shape and size and age.
- 11:51I've seen women in their eighties out there.
- 11:53I've seen women in their early twenties.
- 11:56Right?
- 11:56So I've seen this wide range of women in these classes.
- 11:59And one thing that I have found across the board to be true is that what is sexy and what
- 12:06is beautiful is about how confident a woman is in her own body.
- 12:11And I've seen women that are very, very anxious and timid and they're awkward, and they have
- 12:18every physique that in in society these days we might say is perfect.
- 12:23And then I've seen people that have been at this other end of the spectrum that we might
- 12:26not society might not say this is like what textbook beauty is, even though I think that's
- 12:31a bunch of BS, but from a societal standard standpoint.
- 12:36Right?
- 12:37And they are just the most confident, beautiful, sexy, elegant women because they own
- 12:42their space and they're confident inside it.
- 12:44And so when we're going through these time periods and we're like, oh my gosh.
- 12:47My hormones are changing.
- 12:48Things are crazy.
- 12:49It's like being in puberty again, and the libido is faulting and and, you know, it's it's
- 12:54it can be this vicious cycle.
- 12:56Right?
- 12:56Because what we need oftentimes the most is, like, connection support.
- 13:00And then oftentimes, it's so easy to feel crazy inside just like those teenage years, and it
- 13:06can be hard on the relationship.
- 13:07So keeping that really that libido strong is really important and doing these sorts of
- 13:12classes where you're literally practicing being confident exactly how you are.
- 13:18Right?
- 13:18That's the point is practicing being confident exactly how you are can be completely
- 13:24revolutionary to this time of life.
- 13:26Right?
- 13:28So, obviously, we wanna work on all the physical root causes and the physical
- 13:31imbalances, but what we're really talking about today in this episode is how to work with the
- 13:37the mental changes that are happening because of the different levels of blood flow lighting
- 13:42up different parts of the brain, sending different signals because of the hormonal
- 13:46change.
- 13:47And if you can find if you're up for trying one of these classes, I definitely recommend
- 13:52looking for one near you.
- 13:54In addition, join a support group if and or find a group of women.
- 13:57And if you don't have a strong group of women, I would strongly encourage you, especially as
- 14:01you get to this time, like meetup groups, like hiking groups, or whatever your interest is,
- 14:07look for meetup groups or other types of activities in your area around things you like.
- 14:13Maybe it's time to take salsa dancing up.
- 14:15Right?
- 14:16So salsa dancing is less, say, provocative than pole dancing, and it'd still be pretty
- 14:21provocative.
- 14:22But that's another way of dancing and being in your body and feeling confident.
- 14:26And a lot of confidence, again, is about how we carry ourselves.
- 14:30This is why the research on even posture has been so profound because confidence is really
- 14:36hugely about how we carry ourselves, and that's the practice.
- 14:40That and working to feel confident inside and faking it.
- 14:44Like, literally closing your eyes, doing a meditation, and pretending.
- 14:50If you if you can't access it, then pretend that you are the sexiest woman, you know, on
- 14:55the planet.
- 14:56And then over time as you begin to practice that, you what will happen is you will start to
- 15:01feel sexy and sexier and sexier in your body, but it will take time and practice because
- 15:06you're going against some neuronal some some nervous system circuitry that needs to be
- 15:10repatterned.
- 15:11So I hope this is helpful.
- 15:13It's a really important topic.
- 15:15I think there's a lot of support that we can really give to women during this change, and,
- 15:20unfortunately, so much of what's talked about during this change of life is purely just
- 15:25around hormones, right, which are important, but this is a time that we're moving into this,
- 15:29like, wise crone, this wise woman part of our life where that so much wisdom has been
- 15:36collected.
- 15:36And now, like, there's so much confidence that can happen with that wisdom, but we just have
- 15:41to make it through that hormonal change and get that support.
- 15:44So you are beautiful.
- 15:46You are sexy.
- 15:47You can do this.
- 15:49Please do share this with any friends and family.
