- 0:07issues. Brought to you by the
- 0:10hypnotherapist, demanded by celebrities, CEOs and even
- 0:14royalty. Adam Cox.
- 0:16These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:19world famous Harley Street. This podcast features powerful
- 0:23hypnosis, so do not listen while driving or operating machinery.
- 0:27This recording is not suitable for those with epilepsy or
- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:40Hi, it's. Adam here.
- 0:42And in this session of hypnosis, you're going to be listening to
- 0:46something designed to turn that inner critic into a much kinder,
- 0:52supportive, encouraging voice. I was working with a client that
- 0:58was very harsh on themself. But actually there was an
- 1:02unintended benefit, not to the life in general, but what feels
- 1:08like a win. And then this is called a
- 1:10secondary gain. So the pattern of this client is
- 1:13that they had very high standards, impossibly high
- 1:16standards. Let's call it perfection.
- 1:19And when they failed to meet these very high standards, then
- 1:23they would be very mean to themselves, very critical, very
- 1:27harsh, and that would make them feel bad.
- 1:29But when they felt bad, that would then give them permission
- 1:32to eat whatever they wanted. So you can see how this becomes
- 1:37a loop that is destructive in every way possible.
- 1:41But for a part that wants to crave certain foods, it gives
- 1:45permission to do that. And they couldn't do that if
- 1:48they felt great. So it had this kind of pattern.
- 1:51And what we noticed with this particular client is that when
- 1:54they're a child, certain responsibilities, they can never
- 1:57get them right. They were very harshly
- 1:59criticized by their parent. So this hypnosis session starts
- 2:03with an element of regression and a form of inner child work.
- 2:08By being the mother to themselves the way they would
- 2:11have wanted to have been, that would have been much kinder and
- 2:14encouraging and helped them much better than the criticism ever
- 2:18did. Then a form of seeing how they
- 2:21communicate with their current daughter, which is that kind
- 2:26encouraging way. And the reason for that is that
- 2:29I wanted to give them evidence that they already have this
- 2:31skill set because if they could communicate that way to their
- 2:34daughter, they could definitely communicate that way to themself
- 2:38in their own, in a dialogue. And then it's about harnessing
- 2:42that. Is there an element of what's
- 2:44called parts integration therapy or parts therapy?
- 2:48We use this metaphor of a room with a chair, and we invite that
- 2:52critical part. We elicit the positive intention
- 2:56and we see if we can meet that positive intention in a more
- 2:59elegant, resourceful, and useful way.
- 3:02And then we link that to an extra resource of kind
- 3:06encouragement, integrate those two resources and then future
- 3:10pace that so they get to test. Would it actually work in their
- 3:14reality when they do something quote UN quote wrong?
- 3:17When they mess up, are they harsh to themselves or are they
- 3:20being kind, understanding and compassionate to themselves?
- 3:24So there's a bit going on here. And of course, because it was
- 3:27for a client, some of the references about cooking as a
- 3:30child or helping their daughter, colouring in won't make sense
- 3:35for you if that wasn't your experience and you're not in
- 3:38that situation. But the essence is to train a
- 3:41critical part to be more encouraging and kind.
- 3:46So hone into that if you want to get the maximum value from this
- 3:49session. And if you like the idea of
- 3:52working with me directly, the best thing to do is to look for
- 3:57a link in the description to book a free 30 minute
- 3:59consultation call. We'll have a chat and I'll
- 4:02explain how we can work together.
- 4:05For now though, find a quiet, comfortable place where you
- 4:08won't be disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 5:11Take a deep breath in and as you breathe in, breathe in that
- 5:21wonderful feeling of calm and relaxation.
- 5:26And as you exhale, feel a sense of release as any tension,
- 5:35stress and worries just feels like it's leaving your body in
- 5:42your outward breath, enabling you to feel deeper and deeper,
- 5:52relaxed. That's it.
- 5:57Scan your body for any clues of tension, maybe around your
- 6:02forehead, your jaw, your neck, or your shoulders and just said
- 6:08the intention to release that tension.
- 6:16That's it. And breathing in.
- 6:18Relaxation and exhaling. The sensation of melting away,
- 6:24tension now breathing in and breathing out.
- 6:36And I want you to imagine what it would be like to see one of
- 6:43those big fun water slides. But imagine that this water
- 6:53slide doesn't take you into a pool.
- 6:57It takes you into the past, into your childhood.
- 7:05Imagine you're standing at the top of this slide, being able to
- 7:11slide all the way back into your past.
- 7:17And there's something about a water slide that brings out that
- 7:21inner child within that fun, playful part within you, the
- 7:29part that likes to enjoy and smile.
- 7:34And I want you to imagine sliding down that water slide,
- 7:39feeling the exhilaration, the speed, the velocity all the way
- 7:45down, twists and turns all the way down.
- 7:49But when you get to the bottom, no pool.
- 7:53I want you to imagine you are now back in your childhood home.
- 7:58And I want you to imagine how it would feel to be yourself at
- 8:05your current age, walking around that place.
- 8:11You can see everyone and everything, but you are
- 8:14invisible to them. And I want you to see yourself
- 8:21as a child and your mother at a time where food was being
- 8:28prepared. I want you to see yourself
- 8:34stirring some tomato sauce in a pan, but I want you to see that
- 8:46no matter how you stirred that sauce, it was never quite right.
- 8:56It was never good enough. Didn't matter the direction, the
- 9:04speed, how hard you concentrated, it was never good
- 9:12enough. And I want you to imagine that
- 9:18younger version of you perhaps learning two things.
- 9:26One that you couldn't quite get things right.
- 9:33You had to strive for perfection, and no matter how
- 9:37hard you strived, it was always elusive.
- 9:44And maybe the second thing you learned all the way back then
- 9:46was if you don't do something right, you should be told off.
- 9:54And in fact, you shouldn't even be attempting to do that thing
- 9:57at all, that the responsibility was taken from you.
- 10:04But now, as you see that memory, I want you to get a different
- 10:10perspective. It wasn't that you were doing
- 10:16the wrong thing, it was the way that you were being taught or
- 10:23told off wasn't the right thing. And I want you to imagine how it
- 10:30would feel to step into the body of your mother and decide that
- 10:38you're going to give you feedback in a different way, a
- 10:43way of kindness, compassion, encouragement.
- 10:50Rewind it all until you can see that young version of you
- 10:55attempting to stir the source the very first time, and you
- 11:02know it's not right. But imagine in a loving, kind,
- 11:08encouraging way, you give that feedback to that younger version
- 11:14of you as to how to improve slightly, how to make some
- 11:20progress and notice how good it feels and natural it feels for
- 11:26you to be kind to yourself and see the reaction of that younger
- 11:33version of you responding positively to that kind
- 11:40understanding, that helpful, constructive encouragement,
- 11:48guidance, support. And each time there's more
- 11:56guidance, every bit of feedback, lessons, support is always
- 12:09winnable. They can always make that tiny
- 12:13bit of progress. And I want you to see what
- 12:18impact that would have had on that young child.
- 12:24They would have taken pride in their ability to stir sauce.
- 12:30They would have felt the sense of growth, learning,
- 12:36responsibility because the game was winnable.
- 12:40They wanted to play that game. And imagine when that younger
- 12:48version of you is finished during the support finish
- 12:52stirring that sauce. Just give them wonderful praise,
- 12:57tell them they did a wonderful job so good at stirring that
- 13:02sauce, and just see their face light up with a smile and give
- 13:09them a hug. And if this feels like it would
- 13:14have been more useful for you back then to have had feedback
- 13:18in that way, let me know by nodding your head.
- 13:26I want you to get a sound that there is a inner child within
- 13:29you being healed, and that child perhaps wouldn't have had that
- 13:37critical voice within the way that you do now.
- 13:41I want you to imagine what it would be like to see a mirror
- 13:51somewhere in that childhood home, and the mirror is a portal
- 14:00to your current present home. Again, imagine yourself as a
- 14:07invisible entity. Step through the mirror and I
- 14:12want you to see another young child, this time your daughter.
- 14:19And I want you to see them colouring in maybe a picture
- 14:26that's already printed and they're trying to colour inside
- 14:29the lines. And I want you to see that every
- 14:34now and then the colours go outside of the lines.
- 14:42And I want you to feel that your instinct is that it's no big
- 14:47deal. The intention is to make a nice
- 14:51picture and if every now and then a colour goes outside of
- 14:57the lines then So what? The blip is not the trend.
- 15:05I want you to get a sands. Then your daughter is teaching
- 15:14you a valuable lesson to focus on the picture, not the colour
- 15:23outside of the lines. So breathe in and breathe out.
- 15:31That's it. And imagine a place of pure
- 15:35comfort, pure relaxation. And as you hear the sound of my
- 15:51voice, you may begin to notice things, things that aren't
- 16:01usually noticed. I want you to focus on the
- 16:06rhythm of your breath, the weight of your body supported by
- 16:12anything beneath you. Perhaps even a sense that the
- 16:17very act of listening to my words can lead to a calm and
- 16:23open state. And as your awareness settles,
- 16:33you may begin to drift and wonder how many ways you can
- 16:36relax even now. And every breath in invites a
- 16:45wonderful feeling of kindness. And every breath out releases
- 16:53harshness. And you can drift deeper now,
- 16:59deeper with every word, drifting deeper and deeper down to that
- 17:08place where change happens. And I want you to imagine before
- 17:15you quiet, peaceful room, a room not in your home, a different
- 17:24room, perhaps even a room you've never been to before, a place
- 17:31where all parts of you are welcome.
- 17:38And in this room is a chair, not a comfortable chair, but a
- 17:43functional chair, like a meeting chair.
- 17:49And seated on that chair is a part of you.
- 17:58I want you to imagine that this is your inner critic, the part
- 18:04that speaks harshly when you're late.
- 18:09You don't meet your standards. Maybe that part says things like
- 18:17you're late, you've messed things up, everything is ruined,
- 18:23you're never going to change. And maybe that part looks a
- 18:28certain way or sounds a certain way.
- 18:32Maybe they're dressed a certain way, maybe their facial
- 18:37expressional posture looks a certain way.
- 18:43And you're in the room with this part and just observe it without
- 18:48judgement. But I want you to thank this
- 18:55part not for the harsh criticism, but for the positive
- 19:04intention behind it, because I think this part wants good
- 19:12things for you, wants you to have high standards.
- 19:19So as you thank that critical part for its intention, I want
- 19:26you to see the facial expressions and the posture
- 19:29shift and change and soften this part.
- 19:34Thought you'd be angry with it, but I want you to be grateful
- 19:39for the intention. And then I want you to share
- 19:47something that if this part has the intention of high standards,
- 19:57I want you to imagine projecting all those memories.
- 20:00Then, because you failed those impossibly high standards, I
- 20:08want you to telepathically project all those times you felt
- 20:13that sense of heaviness, blackness, tightness, All those
- 20:20times you ate too much. Felt lousy about yourself?
- 20:28Project all of those experiences directly into the mind of this
- 20:31part that has been harsh with you.
- 20:40I want you to see that perhaps they had no idea that by trying
- 20:46to have the very highest of standards, they were
- 20:51inadvertently giving you permission to lower your
- 20:55standards. Maybe ask that part, what are
- 21:03they trying to do for you? Maybe they're trying to protect
- 21:09you or help you in some way, and just listen to what that part
- 21:13says. I think you already know they
- 21:23had a positive intention, just like your mother had a positive
- 21:28intention. But sometimes positive
- 21:32intentions can lead to the very opposite direction to which they
- 21:38intend. Because that voice may have
- 21:42sounded harsh, but it was never meant to punish.
- 21:48He was trying to motivate, to protect, to raise your
- 21:51standards, to help you live a better life.
- 21:58What if it didn't know how to speak kindly and encouraging?
- 22:08I want you to imagine asking that part if it's willing to
- 22:16meet the intention in a more effective way, and if that part
- 22:28is willing to keep the intention the same, but the way it
- 22:32delivers that intention in a new way.
- 22:34Let me know by nodding your head.
- 22:41That's it. And I want you to ask that part
- 22:45to use kindness, understanding, to use encouragement as the way
- 22:54to have those high standards. And I want you to find the part
- 23:01within you that is the kindest, wisest part, the part that
- 23:08naturally does those things. And when that part enters the
- 23:13room, let me know by nodding your head.
- 23:17And I want you to imagine these two parts will now work as a
- 23:21team. The part that was critical will
- 23:25keep the standards, but the way it will maintain those standards
- 23:31is through encouragement, learning, and tiny incremental
- 23:38progress. And if both parts are willing to
- 23:46work as a team to help you move forward through progress,
- 23:54improvements, refinements, let me know by nodding your head.
- 24:02And I want you to test it out. I want you to imagine it's a
- 24:06week or two from now and you know you're going to be late for
- 24:11something. But I want you to hear that
- 24:16inner dialogue is different now. Maybe instead of reprimanding
- 24:24you, telling you off, maybe that voice is supportive and
- 24:30encouraging. Don't worry, you can still do
- 24:35what you need to do or make this work.
- 24:39And next time we'll leave earlier.
- 24:42You've got this. And notice that when you feel
- 24:47encouraged, when there's perspective, when there's
- 24:51understanding. Notice how you don't feel bad
- 24:55about yourself and any cravings to binge or eat horrible food
- 25:04just isn't there. If this feels like a better
- 25:12relationship with yourself, that would take you forwards where
- 25:18the critic agrees to stop using shame to punish you and instead
- 25:25becomes this inner standard setter quality control to move
- 25:31you forward through progress rather than punishment.
- 25:36A part that still wants growth but speaks with kind,
- 25:40encouraging words. It feels like that change has
- 25:44now taken place. Let me know by nodding your
- 25:48head. And if every now and then you
- 25:55hear that harsh tonality, you can remind that part that we
- 26:01don't do that anymore. It would be an echo.
- 26:07The new part is kind and encouraging.
- 26:11It will be a coach to you, the voice you hear when things don't
- 26:17go to plan, giving you ideas for improvements, refinements, areas
- 26:25of progress. And let's try something else.
- 26:34I want you to imagine you failed at something.
- 26:39Something didn't work out the way you intended.
- 26:44Hear the words of kind encouragement, like a
- 26:51motivational speaker inside your head.
- 26:55Not shaming you and blaming you, reprimanding you, but building
- 26:59you up, getting you back on your feet, helping you to stay the
- 27:07course to that direction that you really want to get to.
- 27:14And you can always choose to feel bad about yourself, but you
- 27:17don't need that anymore. You want something that makes
- 27:22your life better. And by doing so, don't be
- 27:27surprised if you become a different example to the people
- 27:33you love the most. That you don't need to be hard,
- 27:39harsh, mean and cruel to yourself to make progress.
- 27:45You can be kind, loving, caring, compassionate and understanding
- 27:51and still make progress. Hear that new, warm, encouraging
- 27:58voice telling you that you're human.
- 28:03You're still learning. There is no failure, only
- 28:09feedback. We can learn from this, and all
- 28:15of it is true. And you feel how this response
- 28:19feels better. Instead of that darkness and
- 28:22tightness feel lighter, energized, galvanized to move
- 28:27forward. If this path forward feels more
- 28:34winnable, more motivating, more inspiring, let me know by
- 28:37nodding your head as it now dawns on you that perfection is
- 28:44the enemy of progress and you will now prioritize progress
- 28:51over perfection. The setbacks are part of your
- 28:56springboard forward. Your eye is on the progress and
- 29:03the direction that you're heading in.
- 29:11It's time to leave this place, this place deep down in your
- 29:15imagination. But you will return where your
- 29:20inner critic is now, your inner coach, encouraging, supportive,
- 29:29helping you move forward. So take a deep breath in through
- 29:33your nose and out through your nose.
- 29:39Just wiggle your fingers, wiggle your toes, connect and calibrate
- 29:43into the here and the now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to
- 29:50awaken you. Starting to count 123 waking up
- 29:58456 more alert 7-8. Open your eyes.
- 30:02Open your eyes 910 Wide awake, Wide awake.
- 30:08Wide awake. Thank you for listening to The
