- 0:00SPEAKER_00: How open and transparent should you be at work as a manager to really get the best from your team?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: When does being open with team members go from building trust, relationships and teamwork to being detrimental to your credibility, standing and authority?
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: If you play it safe and rarely reveal much about yourself, or your thoughts and opinions about what is happening within the company, or provide honest feedback, you don't build trust, you don't demonstrate open, honest communication, and you rarely get better performance from your team overall.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Go too far and reveal too much, and your team could easily lose respect for you, your credibility and authority take a serious knock, and your bosses are likely to be pretty unhappy with you too.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Not a great recipe for a long and successful career in management.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Get the right level of openness and transparency, and you start building trust, motivation, relationships and teamwork within days.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Within months, you can have a great team delivering impressive results while still being a really fun place to work.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: On top of this, you'll be trusted and respected by your bosses.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Getting to a good balance between revealing too much and too little is, unfortunately, not a formula.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: A few examples.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: The more decision-making and solution building your team members do, the more open you need to be to a point.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: The higher the team performance that you're aiming for, the more open you should be to a point.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The more change, uncertainty, and job insecurity, the more open you should be with your team to a point.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: To help you get the right level of openness and transparency for your situation and team, that increase the level of teamwork and team performance we are covering.

- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And sixth, a willingness to proactively help team members.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: If team members are not open and transparent with, for example, you know what they're working on, what they are struggling with, when they have good ideas and when they don't agree with a solution or when they appreciate other team members for the work they've helped them do, then how are they going to build trusting relationships, communicate, coordinate, collaborate and work towards common goals?

- 3:23SPEAKER_00: A team working together and playing to each person's strengths will, in my experience, easily outperform a group of individuals working alongside each other.

- 4:00SPEAKER_00: So, second, when leading and creating good teamwork, let's talk about demonstrating authenticity, what to share and what not to share.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Being authentic is necessary to build connections, trust and relationships with your team members.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: The better your connections and relationships with your team, the more they will share with you.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: The quicker you'll be able to get support and help, the easier they will be to influence and direct.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: In short, the easier it will be to lead them successfully.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: The more trust you build, the more psychologically safe your team will feel, which will in turn encourage and enable them to perform.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Being authentic when managing others is balancing, creating connections and enabling team members to relate to you with maintaining your credibility and authority as a manager.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Being authentic is not sharing everything.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Being authentic is sharing relevant and considered parts of yourself.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: We all have different personas, you know, our work persona, our out with friends persona, with our partner persona, etc.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Being authentic as a leader or manager is an extension of these personas.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Choose what you are happy to share and share it honestly.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Part of being authentic is also revealing some weaknesses, fears and insecurities.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Be careful what you reveal.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Being human is expected and helps you create solid relationships with team members.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Being overly insecure, needy or unprofessional is not okay.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: For example, you could reveal your minor weaknesses and keep the major ones more hidden or their impact on doing your job well downplayed.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Show you're aware of your strengths and weaknesses.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Always remember what you give the team on a self-management level should clearly outweigh what you need from the team.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Another important action is to admit some of your mistakes.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Again, what you do right must easily outweigh what you do wrong.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Thirdly, a key factor in leading and creating great teamwork is how open and transparent you make your feedback.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Firstly, as a leader or manager, you must give a lot of feedback to your team members if you want to create a high-performing team.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Team members must know and understand what they're doing really well so they can do more of it.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: They also need to know what they're not doing so well and how they can improve it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: It is your job to make sure that they are really clear where they stand, good or bad.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Being open and honest with your feedback is telling it how it is, without sugarcoating it or watering down your message.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Offsetting this is not triggering their emotions or making them feel under attack.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: High emotions mean they will not take in what you're saying and you risk damaging trust and your relationship with them.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: The more diplomatic and considerate you are combined with high levels of trust that you are trying to help them means the more direct, honest and to the point your feedback can be without triggering a fight or flight emotional response.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Make your feedback as detailed and structured as sensible.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Be honest and be direct while also being diplomatic and considerate.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: The very best feedback helps individuals be better and get better at what they do.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Fourth, to lead well and create great teamwork.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Here are seven questions to ask to be open and transparent with the right communications.

- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Open honest communication is essential for creating great teamwork, which in turn improves team performance.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Secondly, the more company context you can provide your team, the more likely team members will make decisions that get the team and business closer to goals faster.

- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Here are seven questions to help you filter the information you share, which are firstly, does sharing this hurt mine or my boss's credibility and authority?
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Secondly, does sharing this hurt the company or the leadership team?
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Thirdly, will sharing this motivate my team and help them understand the bigger picture?
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Fourth, will sharing this promote dialogue and debate that will create understanding and ownership?
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Fifth, how effectively will sharing this remove unhelpful speculation or fear in the team?
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Sixth, is the information confidential or sensitive and therefore should not be shared?
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: And seventh, will sharing this information put down another person in the company?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: In short, do your best to share information openly and transparently when it will help your team.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: When the information does not help your team, don't share it.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Also remember that as a manager you are representing the business to your team.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Don't share information that damages the business.

- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Both help increase team performance.

- 9:53SPEAKER_00: So in summary, leading and managing others is a difficult and complex job.
