Speaker 2: Our diarist roading surprise shock here.
• 1:12
Speaker 3: Who would have thought our diarist wrote in and said,
• 1:15
Speaker 3: I left school at fifteen, I have no unique degree
• 1:17
Speaker 3: and I'm on my way to one. Hundred and forty
• 1:19
Speaker 3: thousand dollars at twenty. I was about to be like,
• 1:22
Speaker 3: how old is she? Like fifty friends, This one's going
• 1:24
Speaker 3: to make you feel inadequate. I came from a very
• 1:27
Speaker 3: loving and caring family where finances were never really spoken of.
• 1:30
Speaker 3: I discovered my interest for heavy diesel mechanics back in
• 1:33
Speaker 3: twenty eighteen, after deciding a year and a half of
• 1:36
Speaker 3: nursing really wasn't up my alley. Fast forward nearly four years.
• 1:39
Speaker 3: I mean, a stable, full time job, nearing the end
• 1:41
Speaker 3: of my apprenticeship and setting bigger and bigger financial goals
• 1:44
Speaker 3: for the years to come. I've always gone against the grain.
• 1:47
Speaker 3: Being a heavy diesel mechanic in a very male dominated
• 1:49
Speaker 3: industry is no easy feat. Well, this is definitely not
• 1:52
Speaker 3: your average twenty year old money story. I'm so proud
• 1:54
Speaker 3: of the path I have led for myself and my future.
• 1:57
Speaker 3: It's gonna be a good one.
• 1:58
Speaker 4: Right my gosh, money diress, welcome to the show.
• 2:00
Speaker 5: I'm here have it going.
• 2:02
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, Hi, did you just wake up one
• 2:05
Speaker 1: day and you're like, I am so sick of caring
• 2:07
  Speaker 1: for the elderly.
• 2:08
Speaker 4: I'm going to work on heavy machinery.
• 2:10
Speaker 5: So what happened pretty much how it went.
• 2:13
Speaker 4: Hey, like that's such a pivot.
• 2:15
  Speaker 1: I adore it. I love that, Like that's not a
• 2:18
Speaker 1: bad thing at all. It's just you know, you often
• 2:21
Speaker 1: see people pivot into different things and go, yeah, I
• 2:23
Speaker 1: was dabbling in these, so then I decided to do it.
• 2:25
Speaker 1: And she's like, not heavy machinery is where it at.
• 2:27
Speaker 6: Well, it's like people are so rude when they're sick.
• 2:30
Speaker 6: I'm sick of it.
• 2:31
Speaker 4: I would like to work in a really blund industry.
• 2:34
Speaker 5: This is it. I take my hat off to nurses
• 2:36
  Speaker 5: like I do.
• 2:37
Speaker 4: Yeah, very sci people.
• 2:40
Speaker 6: I did wake up one morning and I went to
• 2:43
Speaker 6: my mum and I was like, I'm just not feeling
• 2:46
  Speaker 6: it anymore.
• 2:46
Speaker 5: She was like, what do you mean. I was like,
• 2:47
Speaker 5: I'm just not feeling nursing anymore. Like I love learning
• 2:51
Speaker 5: about the body, but people are doing my head in.
• 2:53
Speaker 5: She was like, what are you going to do? And
• 2:54
Speaker 5: I was like, mechanics, Stephen, mechanics. She was like are
• 2:59
  Speaker 5: you sure?
• 3:02
Speaker 1: You were like yeah, yeah, I am, thanks though Mum,
• 3:05
  Speaker 1: I was like yeah, I.
• 3:06
Speaker 5: Was like pretty much.
• 3:07
Speaker 6: So like I did everything myself, Like I called up
• 3:10
Speaker 6: the tape I had already booked my enrolled nursing course
• 3:14
Speaker 6: at tape Yeah. And it was about a day before
• 3:17
Speaker 6: the course changing cut off.
• 3:19
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, census yeah.
• 3:21
Speaker 6: And I quickly called up and I was like, can
• 3:23
Speaker 6: I please change my top four courses to Diesel pre
• 3:27
Speaker 6: apprenticeship and I forgot the other three, but anything to
• 3:30
Speaker 6: do with mechanics pretty much.
• 3:31
Speaker 5: I was like, oh, pre apprenticeships, I say, can you
• 3:33
  Speaker 5: change it?
• 3:33
Speaker 1: And they were like, ma'am, are you sure you told
• 3:36
Speaker 1: us the right student number?
• 3:37
Speaker 5: Are you okay? Do you need counseling?
• 3:40
  Speaker 3: You don't?
• 3:41
  Speaker 4: I love that.
• 3:42
Speaker 1: Let's learn about you. Let's do those structured questions. I
• 3:45
Speaker 1: feel like we are going to talk a lot through
• 3:47
Speaker 1: this episode because I feel like our pre chat was
• 3:51
Speaker 1: very full of energy and I loved it, but I
• 3:53
Speaker 1: feel like I need to keep us on track. All right,
• 3:56
Speaker 1: money diarists, let's start. I want to know more about
• 3:59
Speaker 1: your life. I want to know what your money story
• 4:02
  Speaker 1: is like.
• 4:03
Speaker 6: Okay, so the money story starts as a basic you know,
• 4:07
Speaker 6: had lived with mom and dad and my sister. We
• 4:10
Speaker 6: had our standard four by two home, and then pretty
• 4:13
Speaker 6: much mom and dad separated when I was nine, I think,
• 4:19
Speaker 6: and Dad decided to keep the house, me, Mom, and
• 4:23
Speaker 6: my sister, we all moved out, moved into a rental,
• 4:26
Speaker 6: and it probably wasn't until then I was kind of like, ah,
• 4:30
Speaker 6: this house is quite small. And then we moved to
• 4:32
Speaker 6: another rental, and then we moved to another rental, and
• 4:35
Speaker 6: I was like, something's not right here. Like I never
• 4:37
Speaker 6: asked about money, never spoke about money.
• 4:40
Speaker 5: It was just like oblivious to everything.
• 4:42
Speaker 6: Like I always grew up with everything that I wanted,
• 4:44
Speaker 6: and it was always Mum that was like you will
• 4:48
  Speaker 6: never go without.
• 4:49
Speaker 5: Like Mom would be breaking down.
• 4:51
Speaker 6: In the corner and she would just give me everything,
• 4:54
Speaker 6: me and my sister everything, like we never went without.
• 4:57
Speaker 6: And it probably wasn't until maybe I think I fifteen
• 5:01
Speaker 6: that I got my first job and she was kind
• 5:03
Speaker 6: of like, you know what, boo, your first paycheck, spend it.
• 5:07
Speaker 5: This is all yours.
• 5:08
Speaker 6: And then it wasn't until like the second one where
• 5:09
Speaker 6: she's like, all right, with every paycheck, put like ABC
• 5:13
Speaker 6: and D away and then spend the rest. It's all
• 5:16
Speaker 6: it's your money. And then that's pretty much how it
• 5:19
Speaker 6: went on. I went to do a few other different jobs,
• 5:21
Speaker 6: did my pre apprenticeship, and then they did a few
• 5:25
Speaker 6: other ta jobs and then landed my apprenticeship.
• 5:27
  Speaker 4: How exciting.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: I feel like that would teach you a lot at
• 5:31
Speaker 1: the same time as feeling like you're kind of in
• 5:33
Speaker 1: the dark. So when you say your dad kept the house,
• 5:37
Speaker 1: did he just live there by himself and you guys
• 5:40
Speaker 1: were like bouncing between rentals or like, tell us a
• 5:43
Speaker 1: bit more about that situation.
• 5:45
Speaker 6: Yeah, Dad straight up kept the house, which even as
• 5:49
Speaker 6: like a nine year old, you're kind of like, you
• 5:51
Speaker 6: don't need that, you don't need that, Like you don't
• 5:54
Speaker 6: need I think the house was like I think it
• 5:56
Speaker 6: was a full I'm pretty sure it was a four
• 5:57
  Speaker 6: by two, and I was like, you'd like, I don't
• 6:00
Speaker 6: need that. And then Mum took us out, and like
• 6:03
Speaker 6: I said, we went to I think it was three
• 6:05
Speaker 6: different rentals before Mum bought this other unit.
• 6:09
Speaker 5: And I was kind of like, why do I have
• 6:10
Speaker 5: to keep moving house?
• 6:11
Speaker 6: And the thing is like when Dad would pick me
• 6:13
Speaker 6: up for the weekend, I would go back to our
• 6:16
Speaker 6: old family home and it would all be exactly the same,
• 6:20
Speaker 6: except all the rooms are empty and it's just me.
• 6:24
Speaker 5: And Dad, like I would.
• 6:25
Speaker 6: I think I slept over at my dad's place maybe
• 6:28
Speaker 6: three times in the whole eight years that he paid
• 6:32
  Speaker 6: child support.
• 6:33
  Speaker 4: Wow.
• 6:34
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 6:34
Speaker 6: And then it wasn't until he got a new missus,
• 6:37
Speaker 6: and then a new missus and then a new missus.
• 6:39
Speaker 6: And they would come in, they would go, they would
• 6:40
Speaker 6: come and they would go, and then yet I'm still
• 6:43
Speaker 6: moving from rental a rental with my mum.
• 6:44
Speaker 5: And I was like, this doesn't make sense.
• 6:47
Speaker 6: But I was nine years old and growing obviously, and
• 6:51
Speaker 6: I was kind of like, you notice what it is?
• 6:52
Speaker 6: Got a roof over my head, I'm with my mom.
• 6:55
Speaker 6: I still go to school, e s getting to do
• 6:56
Speaker 6: all the sports. So they want wow, lived life.
• 7:00
Speaker 1: Do you feel like that has impacted you as an
• 7:02
Speaker 1: adult in any way, like in terms of like where
• 7:05
Speaker 1: you live and how that works. Often we find that
• 7:07
Speaker 1: when we talk to people who you know, have maybe
• 7:10
Speaker 1: bounced around a bit as a kid or have been
• 7:12
Speaker 1: in that situation, they really prioritize owning their own home,
• 7:15
Speaker 1: or they really prioritize, you know, one secure location and
• 7:20
Speaker 1: don't like to move around a bit. Is do you
• 7:22
Speaker 1: reckon that's something you relate to.
• 7:24
Speaker 6: I don't think that whole aspect of it really affects me.
• 7:27
Speaker 6: I think it's more the relationship with my dad.
• 7:29
Speaker 5: Yeah, that affected me.
• 7:30
Speaker 6: It was more the kind of cut it out situation.
• 7:34
Speaker 6: I was kind of like, eh, it is what it is.
• 7:38
Speaker 6: But like my home now is my home. I don't
• 7:41
Speaker 6: see it as it. This is my secure place and
• 7:43
Speaker 6: I've got to stay here and I work hard for this.
• 7:45
Speaker 5: It's kind of like, meh, it's my home.
• 7:48
Speaker 6: My relationship with my dad is more scarred than anything else. Yeah,
• 7:53
Speaker 6: the home really home was just a roof over my
• 7:55
Speaker 6: head and a I guess a structured support place for
• 8:00
Speaker 6: my emotional breakdowns half the time.
• 8:02
Speaker 4: But feels though, feels jes relatable content for sure, Like I.
• 8:10
Speaker 6: Won't have an emotional breakdown at my mum's house, but
• 8:13
Speaker 6: I'll have one at my house.
• 8:14
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 8:14
Speaker 6: Fair, It's like my safe spot whenever I'm like, you
• 8:17
Speaker 6: know what, I've just had enough of the world. You
• 8:19
Speaker 6: can go into my bedroom or into my own bathroom
• 8:23
Speaker 6: and deal with my problems there. But yeah, the actual
• 8:25
Speaker 6: house aspect of my parents' separation, and like the moving
• 8:28
Speaker 6: house thing, it was hard, but like I've never really
• 8:31
Speaker 6: taken it further on in my life apart from my
• 8:34
Speaker 6: relationship with my dad.
• 8:36
Speaker 1: Wow, it's so interesting to ask questions like that because
• 8:38
Speaker 1: it's always so different based on who you are and
• 8:42
Speaker 1: what your experiences have been before. Money Darist, you mentioned
• 8:47
Speaker 1: you heavy diesel mechanic. I'm going to ask you the
• 8:51
Speaker 1: official question though, and you can tell us money Darist,
• 8:54
Speaker 1: What do you do for work and how much money
• 8:56
  Speaker 1: do you earn?
• 8:57
Speaker 6: I am a fourth year apprentice heavy mobile deesel mechanic,
• 9:01
Speaker 6: which is all your mining equipment, which is your dump trucks,
• 9:04
Speaker 6: your excavators, scrapers, dozers, everything that's big and weighs like
• 9:10
  Speaker 6: two hundred tons.
• 9:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, we're not talking about the little dinghy that you
• 9:13
Speaker 1: can hire from Bunnings. We're talking about the trucks that
• 9:17
Speaker 1: are the size of two story houses, right, yeap.
• 9:19
Speaker 6: The big stuff, the stuff that digs dirt makes us money,
• 9:24
Speaker 6: All that good stuff, all the stuff that is extremely
• 9:27
  Speaker 6: extremely heavy.
• 9:28
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. So how much money do you am?
• 9:31
Speaker 1: We want the nitty gritty details your fourth year apprentice?
• 9:34
Speaker 1: What does your paycheck look like.
• 9:36
Speaker 6: As a fourth year apprentice? I think I earn just
• 9:40
Speaker 6: under ninety six thousand. That is incredible teen percent super.
• 9:45
Speaker 1: Is that included in the ninety six Yeah? Oh my gosh,
• 9:49
  Speaker 1: No apprentice earns.
• 9:50
Speaker 5: That No, they don't. We are very well paid apprentice.
• 9:53
Speaker 1: My gosh, what could you expect to be paid once
• 9:56
Speaker 1: you're not an apprentice anymore?
• 9:57
Speaker 6: If I say where I am, I am expected to
• 9:59
Speaker 6: be paid about one hundred and four thousand. And that's
• 10:03
Speaker 6: part of my headline of on my way to one
• 10:06
Speaker 6: hundred and forty thousand, which is pretty much a base
• 10:08
Speaker 6: minimum for our mind sight. But if I want to
• 10:10
Speaker 6: go up north, I can go to anywhere above two
• 10:12
Speaker 6: hundred if I really want.
• 10:13
Speaker 3: Wow, gosh, And so is your current employer? Is that
• 10:18
Speaker 3: on location? Do you travel or you like fifo? Is
• 10:21
Speaker 3: it me where you live?
• 10:23
  Speaker 6: It's near where I live, so I think it's about
• 10:24
Speaker 6: a forty minute drive.
• 10:26
Speaker 5: To and from Yeah, incredible there.
• 10:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, well let's than a pink hour commune to the city. Really,
• 10:31
  Speaker 2: my gosh.
• 10:31
Speaker 5: Yes, a lot less traffic.
• 10:33
Speaker 4: Yeah, incredible, I can imagine.
• 10:35
Speaker 1: And it's so lucky that it's so close, because so
• 10:38
Speaker 1: many people who want to get into those industries often
• 10:41
Speaker 1: have to be five fo Did you know that it
• 10:44
Speaker 1: was going to be that close when you started applying
• 10:46
Speaker 1: for jobs like this or did you go all right, well,
• 10:48
Speaker 1: I'm willing to go anywhere because I feel like, that's
• 10:51
  Speaker 1: really niche.
• 10:52
Speaker 6: When I was looking for apprenticeships, I was kind of like,
• 10:55
Speaker 6: apply for anything, apply for everything. I think in the
• 10:58
Speaker 6: end I ended up applying for like, I think it
• 11:01
Speaker 6: was about twenty six or twenty seven apprenticeships, and most
• 11:05
Speaker 6: like half were FIVEFO and half were like CBD, half
• 11:09
Speaker 6: were down south kind of thing. So it was anywhere
• 11:12
Speaker 6: and anywhere, and wherever I got an apprenticeship, I was.
• 11:15
Speaker 4: Like, cool, we're sweet. And it ended up just being
• 11:18
Speaker 4: close to home. How good is that?
• 11:20
Speaker 5: It worked out perfectly?
• 11:21
Speaker 6: Actually, I had another apprenticeship for a five fox gig
• 11:26
Speaker 6: and they didn't tell me. She like sent me the paperwork.
• 11:29
Speaker 6: She was like, yeah, ABC get paid this much and.
• 11:32
Speaker 5: Apprenticeship will consist of this.
• 11:33
Speaker 6: And I was like, oh, where is it my any chance?
• 11:35
Speaker 6: And she was like, I'll send you the email and
• 11:36
Speaker 6: then once you've signed it, sent it back to me.
• 11:39
Speaker 6: And I was like, oh, this is a bit weird.
• 11:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, like that's got o strange.
• 11:42
Speaker 6: It was a FIVEFO job underground, one week on, one
• 11:45
Speaker 6: week off, and I.
• 11:46
Speaker 4: Was under ground and she wasn't going to tell you
• 11:49
  Speaker 4: until you signed.
• 11:51
Speaker 5: Yeah, I was. She didn't tell me it was underground.
• 11:53
Speaker 6: The job wasn't applied for underground, and I strictly did
• 11:55
Speaker 6: not want underground, and she sent me this paperwork and
• 11:57
  Speaker 6: I was like.
• 11:58
Speaker 4: Hi, no, said back this.
• 12:00
Speaker 6: Reply, I really don't want to work underground, so this
• 12:03
Speaker 6: opportunity is not for me.
• 12:05
Speaker 5: Please give it to someone else.
• 12:06
  Speaker 4: Like thanks.
• 12:07
Speaker 3: So you think they've disclosed that, And that is why
• 12:10
Speaker 3: friends at home, you always read your contract before you
• 12:13
  Speaker 3: sign them and.
• 12:13
Speaker 1: Ask a million in questions. There's no such thing as
• 12:16
Speaker 1: too many questions when starting a new job or duging
• 12:18
Speaker 1: on an apprenticeship. Like it's the first time you're quote
• 12:21
Speaker 1: meeting that company, so you're absolutely allowed to ask a
• 12:24
  Speaker 1: million questions.
• 12:26
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 12:26
Speaker 1: Absolutely, Money Doris, you have a very big income for
• 12:29
Speaker 1: your age. I want to know what is your big
• 12:32
  Speaker 1: money goal.
• 12:33
Speaker 6: Oh, first of all, travel, I have wanted to travel
• 12:38
Speaker 6: to America, well, both me and my partner. I have
• 12:40
Speaker 6: wanted to travel to America for three years close.
• 12:43
Speaker 1: To good luck during the pandemic or what we're calling
• 12:46
Speaker 1: the Panini here at Cheese on the money ha.
• 12:49
Speaker 5: Yeah, the Panine's really stuffed this up for us.
• 12:52
Speaker 6: Another money goal is I personally want to investment properties.
• 12:57
Speaker 6: He my partner, he wants investment poper of himself. We
• 13:00
Speaker 6: want to build a family home. Yeah, I have a
• 13:03
Speaker 6: goal of forty thousand in the share market, which I'm
• 13:05
  Speaker 6: nowhere near.
• 13:06
  Speaker 5: But it's a goal.
• 13:07
Speaker 4: So oh my gosh, how exciting that is. So I
• 13:11
Speaker 4: feel like you're really clear on those goals.
• 13:12
Speaker 1: You're like, yep, want two investment properties, want a family home,
• 13:15
Speaker 1: want forty thousand dollars in the share market.
• 13:17
Speaker 4: Like that's pretty clear for a twenty year old.
• 13:20
Speaker 1: Have you always had that level of clarity when it
• 13:23
Speaker 1: comes to goal setting and planning?
• 13:24
  Speaker 5: Definitely not.
• 13:26
Speaker 4: You're like, no, I just made all this, sat up
• 13:27
  Speaker 4: on the spot.
• 13:28
Speaker 6: I didn't really really in my goal planning until maybe
• 13:34
Speaker 6: like two years ago. I was kind of like in
• 13:36
Speaker 6: my first year, I was like, whoa, I got money,
• 13:39
Speaker 6: got a stable job, Let's just have some fun. I've
• 13:41
Speaker 6: always saved, but never really had a goal like I
• 13:44
Speaker 6: was just saving for nothing, kind of says like, oh,
• 13:47
Speaker 6: let's just put it away and just sit there. And
• 13:51
Speaker 6: it wasn't until maybe second or third year I was
• 13:53
Speaker 6: kind of like, oh, I could buy I could buy this,
• 13:56
Speaker 6: I could buy that, I can afford this, I can
• 13:58
Speaker 6: do this if I put this amount away. Because it's
• 14:00
Speaker 6: it's a salary, so I get the same pay every fortnight.
• 14:03
Speaker 6: So I'm like, I can actually plan, And I never
• 14:05
Speaker 6: had that when I did casual or contract work kind
• 14:08
  Speaker 6: of thing.
• 14:08
Speaker 5: So now it was like, ooh, I think it was
• 14:10
Speaker 5: after my first year.
• 14:11
Speaker 6: I kind of pulled my head in and was like,
• 14:12
Speaker 6: all right, you can't just keep spending all this money.
• 14:14
Speaker 1: So tell us how you're going with those goals. What's
• 14:17
Speaker 1: your home saving deposit? Looking like, what's the America Fund?
• 14:21
Speaker 4: Looking like? We want the details, my friend.
• 14:25
Speaker 6: If I'm going to be completely honest, there is no
• 14:28
Speaker 6: holiday savings. I got ten thousand dollars in the share market.
• 14:32
Speaker 4: Hey, that's a fourth of the way there. That is
• 14:35
  Speaker 4: very good.
• 14:35
  Speaker 5: It's better.
• 14:36
Speaker 6: I only started investing August of twenty twenty one, so
• 14:40
  Speaker 6: I'm pretty.
• 14:41
  Speaker 5: Happy with it.
• 14:41
  Speaker 4: That's very good.
• 14:43
Speaker 5: That's pretty much when I started listening to you, cheites
• 14:44
  Speaker 5: on the money.
• 14:45
Speaker 4: That's like a grander month. At least, look at you.
• 14:48
  Speaker 5: It's a goal. We're getting there slowly.
• 14:50
Speaker 6: All things kind of got turned upside down because I
• 14:54
  Speaker 6: bought a new No, I didn't buy a new car
• 14:55
Speaker 6: like I bought a new card to me, you, to.
• 14:57
Speaker 5: You, and it wasn't.
• 14:58
Speaker 6: In the plan that popped up, and I was like,
• 15:01
Speaker 6: you know what, this is an opportunity and we're going
• 15:03
  Speaker 6: to take it.
• 15:03
Speaker 4: And I did go work.
• 15:06
Speaker 1: I love that for you. I asked before do you
• 15:09
Speaker 1: have any investments? And you said you have ten grand
• 15:11
Speaker 1: in the share market?
• 15:12
Speaker 4: Is that all you have? And tell us about that
• 15:15
  Speaker 4: ten grand?
• 15:15
Speaker 6: I have my ten grand split up in between Concept
• 15:18
Speaker 6: Pocket and Spaceship Universe.
• 15:22
  Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure.
• 15:23
Speaker 4: I'd love to know a bit more about how you
• 15:25
  Speaker 4: made that decision.
• 15:26
Speaker 1: So you said, look, I own these things obviously in
• 15:29
Speaker 1: Concept Pocket. So for those of you who don't know
• 15:31
  Speaker 1: Concept Pocket, it's not a micro investing platform. It's a
• 15:34
Speaker 1: proper shared trading platform. But it only gives you access
• 15:37
Speaker 1: to a limited number of ETFs. So how did you
• 15:41
Speaker 1: pick those ETFs? And what was I guess your criteria?
• 15:44
Speaker 1: How did you get yourself to a point where you
• 15:46
Speaker 1: were like, I feel confident enough to pick these and
• 15:47
Speaker 1: put some money behind it, because I feel like that's
• 15:49
Speaker 1: the number one hurdle that a lot of people on
• 15:52
Speaker 1: She's on the Money feel They're like, okay, like I've
• 15:54
  Speaker 1: picked a platform, I've downloaded it. I don't know what
• 15:57
Speaker 1: to pick or do. And obviously that's not what she's
• 15:59
Speaker 1: on the money. We're never going to tell you what
• 16:01
Speaker 1: to pick because that's so personal and that would involve advice.
• 16:04
Speaker 4: But what did you do? What was your thought process?
• 16:08
Speaker 5: It all started really with the boys at work.
• 16:11
Speaker 1: See, everybody has a different strategy and if you poke enough,
• 16:14
Speaker 1: the holes come out.
• 16:17
Speaker 5: It was the boys at work. They all talk like.
• 16:19
Speaker 6: When I mean the boys at work, I don't mean
• 16:21
Speaker 6: like twenty thirty year olds, I mean like the sixty
• 16:24
Speaker 6: seven year olds that are still working and god knows why.
• 16:28
Speaker 5: They were like, do you invest in the stock market?
• 16:30
Speaker 1: And I was like, I'm a twenty year old female.
• 16:33
Speaker 1: Thanks for assuming I do though that's progressive.
• 16:36
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 16:36
  Speaker 6: I was like, no, I don't. I don't even know
• 16:38
Speaker 6: what with stock markets. Oh everyone's talking oh one cent here,
• 16:40
Speaker 6: four cents here, and I'm like, what are you talking?
• 16:43
Speaker 6: Like twenty dollars in my banking account? I'm killing the
• 16:45
Speaker 6: game kind of thing. Like I had no idea, and
• 16:47
Speaker 6: the boys always spoke about It're like, oh, get on
• 16:49
Speaker 6: concept pocket, do this, do that? And I was like, no,
• 16:52
  Speaker 6: I don't want to. And it wasn't until I randomly
• 16:54
Speaker 6: found cheese and the money one day and my im
• 16:57
Speaker 6: letting your money shameless plug or whatever for him.
• 16:59
  Speaker 5: I know.
• 17:02
Speaker 4: He never listens to our content, so you'll never know
• 17:05
  Speaker 4: that happened.
• 17:06
Speaker 5: Well, he better otherwise I'll message him personally.
• 17:08
Speaker 4: Thank you, thank you. He'll take that personally.
• 17:11
Speaker 6: I just listened to all these podcasts and the share
• 17:14
Speaker 6: market just seems so interesting and everyone's making millions in
• 17:17
Speaker 6: like thirty forty years, and I was like, all right,
• 17:21
Speaker 6: maybe I can maybe a millionaire by the time and
• 17:23
Speaker 6: retire early, like fifty.
• 17:24
Speaker 1: I don't know, on your income, you have absolutely every
• 17:28
Speaker 1: ability to do that, my friend.
• 17:30
Speaker 5: I did a heap of research.
• 17:31
Speaker 6: I found think there's like seven or eight different ETF
• 17:35
Speaker 6: groups in consext pocket.
• 17:36
Speaker 4: Yep, And it just felt right.
• 17:37
Speaker 6: And I started off with the Ossie Top two hundred
• 17:40
Speaker 6: cause that's where I felt most comfortable knowing most of
• 17:42
Speaker 6: the companies and all that and just the other three.
• 17:46
Speaker 6: Like tech is on its way up in the world,
• 17:48
Speaker 6: like we all we all know that it's especially in mining,
• 17:51
Speaker 6: like we're going to go from being des mechanics to
• 17:53
Speaker 6: sparkys in a matter of years probably.
• 17:56
Speaker 5: So I just I just did my research. I did
• 17:58
Speaker 5: my own personal research.
• 17:59
Speaker 1: I love that and thank you for sharing that, because
• 18:01
Speaker 1: I think so often people are like, where did you
• 18:04
Speaker 1: get the magical ticket to know that that was the
• 18:05
Speaker 1: EDF to buy or that was the stock that they
• 18:08
Speaker 1: should purchase, And more often than not, there's no magical answer.
• 18:11
Speaker 1: There's no website you go to that says this is
• 18:13
Speaker 1: the best one ever. It's literally you just going, oh,
• 18:16
Speaker 1: I feel pretty comfy with that and making a decision
• 18:18
Speaker 1: that way. And I just I love learning your little
• 18:22
Speaker 1: investment stories and understanding how you first got a foot
• 18:25
Speaker 1: in the market. You mentioned before you got a car.
• 18:28
Speaker 1: I have some questions. Do you have any debts?
• 18:33
  Speaker 6: I sure do I have a I think that's just
• 18:37
Speaker 6: a bit over twenty thousand at the moment, which is
• 18:40
Speaker 6: about I think about half the car.
• 18:43
Speaker 5: I paid just over half the car.
• 18:46
Speaker 6: In cash with part of my savings, because, like I said,
• 18:50
Speaker 6: this car was not planned kind of thing, and the
• 18:53
Speaker 6: car that I was saving for was going to be
• 18:55
Speaker 6: in like the sixty seventy thousand dollars range YEP. I
• 19:00
Speaker 6: saw this car pop up and it was really cheap
• 19:04
Speaker 6: for the current market. Body was in very good condition,
• 19:08
Speaker 6: and obviously being a mechanic myself. I can fix all
• 19:11
Speaker 6: the issues that it has with it.
• 19:12
  Speaker 4: I know nothing.
• 19:13
Speaker 5: I knew nothing about four years ago.
• 19:16
  Speaker 4: It's amazing.
• 19:17
Speaker 1: What investing yourself for four years in education tars It's wild.
• 19:21
Speaker 5: It's bloody insane. I'll tell you what.
• 19:23
Speaker 1: How exciting. So you've got twenty ish grand as a
• 19:26
  Speaker 1: car loan?
• 19:27
  Speaker 4: Is that right?
• 19:28
  Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah?
• 19:28
Speaker 4: And is that it?
• 19:29
Speaker 1: Do you have any hex step from when you did nursing,
• 19:32
Speaker 1: like anything else dwindling in the background?
• 19:35
Speaker 6: No, just the twenty thousand dollars car loan, which will
• 19:37
Speaker 6: be paid off before the end of the year, before.
• 19:40
Speaker 4: The end of the year. Probably, Oh my gosh.
• 19:44
Speaker 5: You'll most likely be done before the end of the year.
• 19:47
Speaker 6: Got my partner's name is under the home loan, but
• 19:51
Speaker 6: we are looking to refinance and my name is on it.
• 19:54
Speaker 6: But the home loan was four hundred and seventy five thousand,
• 19:57
Speaker 6: so we both pay half of the mortgage towards that.
• 19:59
Speaker 5: So say, I have ABC mortgage above my head.
• 20:03
Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, and like that's literally how it is.
• 20:05
Speaker 1: So how much does your mortgage end up costing you
• 20:08
Speaker 1: every month? For what was that four seventy five?
• 20:11
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 20:11
Speaker 5: I think it's just under two grand a month something
• 20:15
  Speaker 5: like that.
• 20:16
Speaker 6: Very cool, And I have no hex step because when
• 20:19
Speaker 6: I was going to TAFE, I was still in the age,
• 20:24
Speaker 6: the school age kind of thing.
• 20:26
  Speaker 5: Yeah, so all.
• 20:26
Speaker 6: My courses were insanely cheap. Mom was like, why didn't
• 20:30
Speaker 6: you go to TAFTE earlier?
• 20:31
Speaker 5: This is very cheaper. So Mum paid all of that,
• 20:36
  Speaker 5: the absolute angel.
• 20:37
Speaker 4: That she is, so oh how cool.
• 20:39
Speaker 1: Next question, a very left field question compared to debt.
• 20:43
Speaker 4: Do you shot back?
• 20:45
Speaker 5: I love shot do you.
• 20:47
Speaker 4: Actually the diversity of people on this.
• 20:51
Speaker 1: We've got people who are like me, who are like, yep,
• 20:53
Speaker 1: I love shopping online, and a diesel fitter who's like, yeah, sweet,
• 20:57
Speaker 1: Like I am definitely here for this.
• 21:00
Speaker 4: What do you buy and shot back?
• 21:00
Speaker 6: My friend I just got an email this morning saying
• 21:03
Speaker 6: your shot back has been confirmed from like two or
• 21:06
  Speaker 6: three months ago.
• 21:07
Speaker 5: So for some car.
• 21:07
Speaker 1: Parts I bought and you were like, thank god that
• 21:10
Speaker 1: came through because that was a good one.
• 21:11
Speaker 3: I feel like that's actually a really good idea because
• 21:13
Speaker 3: I'm assuming, I mean, I know literally nothing about car parts,
• 21:18
Speaker 3: but I'm assuming they're pretty expensive. If my like normal
• 21:20
Speaker 3: mechanics bill, is there anything to go by? So if
• 21:22
Speaker 3: you can get some money back on that. I imagine that
• 21:24
Speaker 3: would be looking pretty nice.
• 21:26
  Speaker 5: It's great.
• 21:26
Speaker 6: Like I just bought two filters for my car, which
• 21:28
Speaker 6: you were in addition to like the oil and fuel filters,
• 21:32
Speaker 6: and they were like eight hundred bucks.
• 21:34
Speaker 4: What for a filter?
• 21:35
Speaker 1: I can get a Britta filter at the supermarket for
• 21:38
Speaker 1: much cheaper. Let me know if you want me to
• 21:39
Speaker 1: pick one up next time I go to Kol's.
• 21:41
Speaker 6: It was like a kit, so it kind of was
• 21:43
Speaker 6: a kit and they charge just like the bracket.
• 21:45
Speaker 5: The hopes is like all up this thing.
• 21:46
Speaker 6: This whole kit, I reckon would have cost like maybe
• 21:49
Speaker 6: two hundred dollars. You bought everything individually and made shit yourself.
• 21:52
  Speaker 5: But I don't do that.
• 21:54
Speaker 4: Yeah, that side is expensive.
• 21:57
Speaker 6: I don't do mechanics at home because that's my job
• 22:00
Speaker 6: and I don't like doing it at home a lot.
• 22:02
  Speaker 4: So yeah, that's that's fair.
• 22:04
Speaker 1: So I reckon that might play into your worst money habit.
• 22:07
Speaker 1: But I'm going to ask you what your best money
• 22:09
Speaker 1: habit is. First, my friend, I.
• 22:11
Speaker 5: Don't think I can call it like a money habit.
• 22:13
Speaker 5: But with IG you have the roundup.
• 22:16
Speaker 4: Yeah, you can have a round feature.
• 22:18
Speaker 6: So say it actually like a dollar, it will round
• 22:21
Speaker 6: it up to the ear is five dollars and debit
• 22:22
Speaker 6: another four dollars to another bank account.
• 22:25
Speaker 5: Yeah, and all my round up money goes into my
• 22:27
  Speaker 5: bills account.
• 22:28
Speaker 6: So I think I got an email like early fed
• 22:31
Speaker 6: and from the start of the financial year to fare
• 22:34
Speaker 6: By saved like nine hundred and twenty seven dollars in
• 22:36
Speaker 6: round up house bills.
• 22:39
Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, how good?
• 22:40
Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I saw like this email and it was like, you,
• 22:42
Speaker 6: in like the past whatever months, you have saved nine
• 22:44
Speaker 6: hundred and twenty seven dollars in round up.
• 22:46
Speaker 5: And I was like, why none of that?
• 22:48
  Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
• 22:50
Speaker 3: It's fun to like reflect on that data, though, I
• 22:52
Speaker 3: really like it when businesses do that. Up does like
• 22:55
Speaker 3: how much you spent this year and it breaks.
• 22:56
Speaker 2: I do not like that.
• 22:58
Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I don't like get knowing what you saved
• 23:01
Speaker 3: it arguably much more encouraging than knowing what you spent.
• 23:04
Speaker 3: But I think it's really cool to be able to
• 23:06
Speaker 3: look at that and be like, oh, like it's actually
• 23:07
Speaker 3: working because you wouldn't be thinking about your round ups,
• 23:09
Speaker 3: but it's just ticking away in the background.
• 23:11
Speaker 4: It's like the Spotify roundup of the year. Yeah. This
• 23:14
Speaker 4: is what your top spending habit was?
• 23:17
Speaker 1: Really, I reckon we should do one for she's on
• 23:19
Speaker 1: the money, where we can all fill it out and
• 23:21
Speaker 1: be like, yeah, this is what I spent the most
• 23:23
Speaker 1: on this year and share it so that I don't
• 23:25
Speaker 1: feel so bad about my own situation. Jes So let's
• 23:28
Speaker 1: put that on for late November. Flipping back, what is
• 23:32
Speaker 1: your worst money habit?
• 23:34
Speaker 5: Can? I have two?
• 23:35
Speaker 1: You can have as many as you like, will be it?
• 23:37
Speaker 1: We probably want to minimize them in general.
• 23:39
Speaker 6: Well, I only have two, but the first one is
• 23:41
Speaker 6: spending way too much money on sugar free coke.
• 23:43
  Speaker 5: It's ridiculous.
• 23:45
Speaker 3: It tastes like dirt anyway. I pulled this on my Instagram.
• 23:50
Speaker 1: I don't know about my pan when there was one
• 23:53
Speaker 1: on the desk, I think, and Elisa has been very
• 23:55
Speaker 1: kind and took it away.
• 23:57
Speaker 4: You did, she took my can.
• 24:00
Speaker 6: It makes big, five hundred mil cans of it, and
• 24:02
Speaker 6: I really, oh so good.
• 24:07
Speaker 4: Well just thinks it tastes like dirt water.
• 24:09
Speaker 1: If anybody follows her on her personal Instagram, she rallies
• 24:12
Speaker 1: for this, and he's very vocal in this space.
• 24:14
Speaker 2: Team PEPSI, We're gonna get hate mail.
• 24:17
  Speaker 1: For that.
• 24:18
Speaker 5: I do like a bit of vanilla Pepsi Max as well.
• 24:22
Speaker 5: Give me a break.
• 24:22
Speaker 1: We love that vanilla pepsi Max. I didn't even know
• 24:26
  Speaker 1: they did that.
• 24:27
Speaker 5: Have a mango pepsi Max your life will be changed.
• 24:29
  Speaker 4: And mango.
• 24:31
Speaker 1: I've never even heard of these things. Where do you
• 24:35
Speaker 1: purchase such delicacies cold?
• 24:40
Speaker 3: I'm going to google mango pepsi Max after so, mango
• 24:43
  Speaker 3: pepsi Max.
• 24:44
Speaker 5: Do you have creamy soda pepsi Max?
• 24:46
  Speaker 1: No?
• 24:47
Speaker 4: I think you're making this up.
• 24:48
Speaker 6: Now there's creamy soda pepsi Max, mango and vanilla.
• 24:53
Speaker 1: No, there's absolutely not. That is not a thing that
• 24:57
Speaker 1: I'm not gonna fight with you. I'm gonna raspberry. I
• 25:01
Speaker 1: can see how that would work. That would work really well.
• 25:04
Speaker 2: What's your other worst money habit?
• 25:06
Speaker 5: It's either all or nothing?
• 25:08
Speaker 6: Like it's either you know what, girl, treat yourself, go
• 25:11
Speaker 6: spend every single bit of your money on anything you want,
• 25:14
Speaker 6: or it's you know what, everything your own into the
• 25:17
Speaker 6: stock market and then say you're poor for the next
• 25:19
  Speaker 6: two weeks.
• 25:22
Speaker 1: Balance is important. I feel like you might have a
• 25:24
Speaker 1: little bit to learn.
• 25:25
Speaker 4: But that is okay.
• 25:28
Speaker 5: Doesn't happen every paycheck?
• 25:29
Speaker 1: No, but it's good to know that about yourself as well,
• 25:32
Speaker 1: because I'm a bit all or nothing. Like if I
• 25:34
Speaker 1: decide I'm doing something, and Jess, you've worked with me
• 25:37
Speaker 1: long enough to attest to this. If I've decided we're
• 25:39
Speaker 1: doing it, we're doing it. Like it's happening that week,
• 25:42
Speaker 1: that month, whatever, that day, it's gonna like we're going
• 25:45
Speaker 1: to organize something for that. So I feel like I'm
• 25:47
Speaker 1: a bit all or nothing and then sometimes just be like,
• 25:50
Speaker 1: are we going to.
• 25:50
  Speaker 4: Do that thing?
• 25:51
Speaker 1: And I'll be like, no, not happening, Yeah, not not
• 25:53
Speaker 1: doing it. So I feel like I'm very like that.
• 25:56
Speaker 1: I'm also really impulsive. So for me, having work cked
• 26:00
Speaker 1: out my banking and cash flow and how I manage
• 26:03
Speaker 1: my money has been really important to kind of stop that.
• 26:06
Speaker 1: Have you found that you've had to do that as well.
• 26:08
Speaker 5: Like stop myself from the spending.
• 26:10
Speaker 4: Or yeah, just having a good banking structure.
• 26:12
Speaker 1: And you know you said before you had your savings account,
• 26:15
Speaker 1: your bills account and stuff.
• 26:17
Speaker 4: Is that so that you're not so naughty with money?
• 26:20
  Speaker 1: Yeah?
• 26:20
  Speaker 5: Pretty much?
• 26:21
Speaker 6: Like like I said, it doesn't like all or nothing
• 26:23
Speaker 6: thing doesn't happen every paycheck, but it's like I put
• 26:26
Speaker 6: a certain amount into savings, shares, bills, whatever, and then
• 26:30
Speaker 6: sometimes I'm like, oh shit.
• 26:32
Speaker 5: Like it's all gone. But oh, well is what it is.
• 26:35
Speaker 6: We'll get on the bandwagon next paycheck and then it
• 26:38
Speaker 6: just it just happened, like it doesn't happen again. But
• 26:39
Speaker 6: I go on the process. It happens like maybe every
• 26:42
Speaker 6: three or four months. If one random paycheck it's like bang,
• 26:45
  Speaker 6: it's gone.
• 26:45
Speaker 5: I'm like, okay, But as.
• 26:47
Speaker 3: Long as you're paying your bills, like you have a mortgage,
• 26:50
Speaker 3: I think as long as you're doing those things, you
• 26:51
Speaker 3: also can't necessarily penalize yourself from I mean, I'm not
• 26:55
Speaker 3: saying it's a great habit to spend all of your
• 26:57
Speaker 3: money by any stretch of the imagination she's on the money, No,
• 27:00
Speaker 3: But I think like, if you're saying it's only happening
• 27:03
Speaker 3: every three or four months, that's very different from you
• 27:06
Speaker 3: doing it every week and blowing it out and not
• 27:07
Speaker 3: being able to make your commitments.
• 27:09
Speaker 6: Yeah, all my bills always get paid, Like I always
• 27:11
Speaker 6: pay myself and my bills first, and then whatever money
• 27:14
Speaker 6: I have left over, I'm like, oh, my card is
• 27:17
Speaker 6: something new this week, let's just slap it on there instead.
• 27:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, it's not even that bad of money. That
• 27:24
  Speaker 2: all right.
• 27:25
Speaker 4: If we forced you to give yourself a money grade,
• 27:27
Speaker 4: what would you give yourself, my friend.
• 27:32
  Speaker 5: Maybe a C.
• 27:34
Speaker 4: Why I'm really young.
• 27:37
Speaker 5: I have so much to learn, is what it is?
• 27:41
  Speaker 5: Maybe like a a C plus. We'll go over that.
• 27:43
Speaker 1: Hey, all right, let's chat about that in a bit
• 27:46
Speaker 1: more depth straight after this break. All right, we are
• 27:50
Speaker 1: back money dives. Before we went to the break, you
• 27:52
Speaker 1: rated yourself a C plus. However, you're an accomplished apprentice,
• 27:56
Speaker 1: you have an incredibly good income, you have a mortgage.
• 27:59
Speaker 1: You said that you bought a car and you know,
• 28:02
Speaker 1: had half the savings, and now you've got a car loan,
• 28:04
Speaker 1: and you seem to be relatively good.
• 28:05
  Speaker 4: At money management.
• 28:07
Speaker 1: Talk us through where you think the C plus has
• 28:10
Speaker 1: come through, so we can understand a little bit about
• 28:13
Speaker 1: why you would grade yourself a C plus, because I
• 28:15
Speaker 1: know that there are so many people going, oh my gosh,
• 28:17
Speaker 1: if I earned what you earn, I would be in
• 28:19
Speaker 1: a because people value their quote money grade when they
• 28:23
Speaker 1: grade themselves so differently.
• 28:24
Speaker 4: So talk us through why you think you're a C plus.
• 28:27
Speaker 6: I never really have thought about my money habits in
• 28:30
Speaker 6: like an A, B, C or D way kind of thing,
• 28:34
Speaker 6: Like I don't have that grading approach to money. I
• 28:39
Speaker 6: don't think it matters that I'm now, sorry, twenty one
• 28:42
Speaker 6: years old and earn ninety six thousand, Like the cost
• 28:46
Speaker 6: of how much it earned doesn't really matter.
• 28:48
  Speaker 5: I don't know.
• 28:48
Speaker 6: I think I could put more of my money to
• 28:50
Speaker 6: good use. I think I could make more of my
• 28:53
Speaker 6: money work for me instead of me being like, cool,
• 28:55
Speaker 6: we're just gonna save it away, Like I could have put.
• 28:59
Speaker 5: More in to the stock market and I didn't.
• 29:03
Speaker 3: Hindsight's always twenty twenty, though you can always look back
• 29:06
Speaker 3: at it, like, ah, if I bought Microsoft shares fifty
• 29:09
Speaker 3: years ago, I would have been really rich.
• 29:10
Speaker 2: I'm not going to do any good now.
• 29:12
Speaker 6: Though, Yeah, I kin'd of see it as like a
• 29:16
  Speaker 6: I don't know, Like I think I've done well, like
• 29:19
Speaker 6: I paid my last car off as well, which I'm
• 29:22
Speaker 6: proud of that I did at like eighteen. I had
• 29:25
Speaker 6: my first loan ever kind of thing in my first year,
• 29:28
Speaker 6: and it was a twenty grand loan again, and I
• 29:30
Speaker 6: paid that off within my entire first year because I
• 29:33
Speaker 6: prioritized paying that debt off and I did, and then
• 29:37
Speaker 6: I invested in the stock market. Then I owned that
• 29:40
Speaker 6: car for a bit, and I doubled with a bit
• 29:42
Speaker 6: of fun, and then dabbled in the stock market, and
• 29:45
Speaker 6: then wore the stock market, and then back to saving.
• 29:48
Speaker 6: I'm just like, I'm not consistent on where I am consistent,
• 29:51
Speaker 6: Like a set amount of money goes to difflect to
• 29:54
Speaker 6: the same bank accounts, But I feel like the percentages
• 29:57
Speaker 6: of how much of my money could be more utilized
• 29:59
Speaker 6: to work for me.
• 30:00
Speaker 4: Maybe, yeah, that makes absolute sense.
• 30:03
Speaker 1: I think it's just interesting when you start to hear
• 30:06
Speaker 1: somebody going, oh, I think this could change or this
• 30:08
Speaker 1: could change, you kind of get inside their head a
• 30:10
Speaker 1: little bit and go, oh, that makes sense for them.
• 30:13
Speaker 1: Why do you think you're so comfortable, I guess at
• 30:16
Speaker 1: that income range for your age, why do you think
• 30:19
Speaker 1: you're so comfortable just being like, you know what, I'll
• 30:21
Speaker 1: wing it and I'll work it out. Is it just
• 30:23
Speaker 1: because you've got a consistently relatively large paycheck coming in
• 30:26
  Speaker 1: every month.
• 30:27
Speaker 5: I can publy Yeah, I assume so.
• 30:29
Speaker 6: I don't want to say, but like I kind of
• 30:30
Speaker 6: had that mentality towards like everything in my life, Like
• 30:34
Speaker 6: I'm just so easy going, like I don't see money
• 30:37
Speaker 6: as like the be all and the end all. I'm like, oh,
• 30:40
Speaker 6: it's here, and I utilize it like really really well.
• 30:44
Speaker 6: But I'm so cruisy with everything that goes on in
• 30:46
Speaker 6: my life that I'm like, Okay, I work hard for
• 30:49
Speaker 6: my money. I work so damn hard for my money,
• 30:52
Speaker 6: and that when it comes in, I'm like, cool, it's there.
• 30:55
Speaker 2: Cool, let's go back to work, Like yeah, I love.
• 30:57
Speaker 6: That I work hard for it and it in and
• 31:00
Speaker 6: then I'm like, oh cool, let's just let's just do life.
• 31:03
  Speaker 4: That's fair.
• 31:04
Speaker 1: That's absolutely fair. What questions have you got, Jess. I
• 31:07
Speaker 1: can see you looking at your notes.
• 31:09
Speaker 3: I was gonna say, I want to talk to you
• 31:11
Speaker 3: a little bit more about your job because I would
• 31:14
Speaker 3: imagine that your industry would be very heavily skewed male.
• 31:18
Speaker 2: What is that like.
• 31:19
Speaker 3: Did you find, particularly because you are on the younger side,
• 31:23
Speaker 3: to be going into a workforce where you said before,
• 31:26
Speaker 3: you know some of the guys are fifty sixty years old.
• 31:28
Speaker 3: Have you come up against so far any of that
• 31:31
Speaker 3: kind of she's a bit young or you know, what
• 31:34
Speaker 3: would you know? Because you get that in all industries,
• 31:36
Speaker 3: but I imagine when you're working around machinery and it's
• 31:38
Speaker 3: a bit of a blokes industry, it might be quite prevalent.
• 31:42
Speaker 3: Has that been the case.
• 31:43
Speaker 6: Yeah, I've had my fair share of men come and
• 31:47
Speaker 6: put me down. Before I got my apprenticeship, I worked
• 31:50
Speaker 6: at a different industry in like the ship building industry,
• 31:54
Speaker 6: and I was the only female out of the entire
• 31:58
Speaker 6: engineering department, out of one hundred.
• 32:01
  Speaker 5: And fifty men.
• 32:02
Speaker 6: Oh my god, I was here and I was seventeen
• 32:05
Speaker 6: years old, Like I just got my license, and I
• 32:08
Speaker 6: was this little seventeen year old walking into a massive
• 32:11
Speaker 6: shipbuilding company, and I likely I had like two blokes
• 32:15
Speaker 6: out of the whole company that were kind of like
• 32:18
Speaker 6: not my backbone. They were like, if you ever have
• 32:20
Speaker 6: an issue, come to us and we'll do ABC and D,
• 32:23
Speaker 6: and you know you just by the time I was
• 32:25
Speaker 6: like three months into the job, I knew what I
• 32:27
Speaker 6: was doing almost head down, ass up, and like people
• 32:30
Speaker 6: just come up to you and be like, you know,
• 32:32
Speaker 6: you don't belong here, like do you know what you're doing?
• 32:34
Speaker 5: Do you know how to do your job? It's just
• 32:36
  Speaker 5: the industry.
• 32:37
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's such an old school mentality that, you know,
• 32:41
  Speaker 3: it's a very because you're a woman, you couldn't possibly
• 32:44
Speaker 3: know anything about machines, not as if you've done the same,
• 32:47
Speaker 3: if not more study than something.
• 32:50
Speaker 4: With you doing it seventeen, it was probably this.
• 32:54
Speaker 6: Yeah, So that, apart from that job didn't last very
• 32:58
Speaker 6: long because it was also very terrible company.
• 33:01
Speaker 5: I did not have a good time. Just the way
• 33:04
Speaker 5: I was treated and way other even the men were treated.
• 33:06
  Speaker 5: It was terrible.
• 33:07
Speaker 4: Oh I'm so sorry. That sucks so much.
• 33:10
Speaker 5: It sucked a little bit.
• 33:11
Speaker 6: Very character building gives me the backbone that I definitely
• 33:14
Speaker 6: have today. But now my apprenticeship has been an absolute breeze.
• 33:18
Speaker 6: Like I think I started when I was seventeen, and
• 33:21
Speaker 6: like sometimes being a young female in the industry can
• 33:25
Speaker 6: be a bit like half and half and see like
• 33:28
Speaker 6: oh we got a young female apprentice, or it's like,
• 33:31
Speaker 6: oh we got a young female apprentice. Yeah, it's like
• 33:35
Speaker 6: it's either half and half kind of thing. I haven't
• 33:37
Speaker 6: had too much issue with my apprenticeship, apart from the
• 33:41
Speaker 6: odd one or two people that like to talk down
• 33:43
  Speaker 6: to you.
• 33:43
Speaker 5: But I'm like, you know what, you're gonna talk.
• 33:45
Speaker 6: Down to me, I'm going to talk down back to you,
• 33:47
Speaker 6: and I'll stand my ground and if you're rude to me, I'm.
• 33:49
  Speaker 4: Rude to you.
• 33:49
Speaker 3: So I love that you have so much conviction that
• 33:52
Speaker 3: I could not. I could never like I just someone
• 33:55
Speaker 3: would say something mean, I'd be.
• 33:56
Speaker 6: Like, oh, sorry, you should see me. I'm an angry crier,
• 34:01
Speaker 6: an angry crier. I'm an angry cry and I get
• 34:04
Speaker 6: so worked up and so angry I'll just burst out
• 34:07
Speaker 6: into tears. One of the bosses at were he just
• 34:10
Speaker 6: he rubbed me up the wrong way and I snapped.
• 34:13
Speaker 6: I snapped and I swore at him, and I walked
• 34:15
Speaker 6: out and I cried.
• 34:17
Speaker 5: One of the blokes come up to me. He was like, oh, well, well,
• 34:19
  Speaker 5: what's the matter.
• 34:20
  Speaker 6: I said a many amount of words that I won't
• 34:23
Speaker 6: repeat here, and he just started laughing at me.
• 34:25
Speaker 5: He goes, go sit down, go have a Milo or something.
• 34:28
Speaker 4: Just come for a Milo. This is so sweet. I
• 34:32
Speaker 4: need a Milo when I've had a bad day.
• 34:34
Speaker 2: That's pretty wholesome advice.
• 34:35
Speaker 6: It's either a Milo or Ness Cafe forty three blend coffee.
• 34:39
Speaker 2: Yeah, the high class coffee.
• 34:42
Speaker 1: Very very nice. That sounds like stuff cafeteria vibes.
• 34:45
Speaker 3: Does your partner work in the same industry as you?
• 34:48
Speaker 3: He sure does incredible. Did you guys meet it work
• 34:50
  Speaker 3: you shor.
• 34:51
  Speaker 4: Did so cute?
• 34:54
Speaker 5: It was like the first day, like I'd come into
• 34:56
Speaker 5: the workshop, they were like, you go work with this person.
• 34:58
Speaker 6: You work with this person, and they're like, you can
• 35:00
Speaker 6: go work with this person.
• 35:01
Speaker 5: I walked up and I got the young hot.
• 35:04
Speaker 4: Tody, I will snap you up hello.
• 35:08
Speaker 6: And then we ended up getting closer and closer and
• 35:11
Speaker 6: now he's stuck with me.
• 35:12
Speaker 2: So may you have house together?
• 35:15
Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, how good is that?
• 35:18
Speaker 5: That's really dog together?
• 35:19
Speaker 2: What kind of dog do you have?
• 35:21
Speaker 3: Which wear a cross jet ross stock?
• 35:24
Speaker 6: So it's not a terror, it's been trained very well.
• 35:28
Speaker 6: I know it's very biased of me.
• 35:29
Speaker 1: But oh I think Lucy's been trained well too. And
• 35:32
Speaker 1: then she's like rude. Sometimes I'm like, nah, that's not
• 35:35
Speaker 1: how I brought you up.
• 35:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, before we head off, do you have any advice
• 35:38
Speaker 3: for women wanting to get into an industry like yours
• 35:41
Speaker 3: that is really heavily skewed male that I may be
• 35:44
Speaker 3: worried about facing, you know, those same kind of comments
• 35:47
Speaker 3: or that same level of discrimination.
• 35:49
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's I'm not gonna lie. So it's a tough industry,
• 35:53
  Speaker 6: Like it's a. It's a very tough industry, not only
• 35:57
Speaker 6: to work with the men, but it's just a fly
• 36:00
Speaker 6: demanding job. It would be some days I come home
• 36:04
Speaker 6: from work and I am I am so sore, and
• 36:07
Speaker 6: i am so tired.
• 36:08
Speaker 5: I've got cuts and.
• 36:09
Speaker 6: Bruises all up my arm, or I've been covered in
• 36:12
Speaker 6: hydraulic oil head to toe, or I'm covered in diesel,
• 36:16
Speaker 6: like you know, sometimes I've been covered in that much
• 36:18
Speaker 6: oil that I've had to have a shower at works,
• 36:21
Speaker 6: and I can't go home in my clothes because I
• 36:23
Speaker 6: wear clothes under my overalls. I'm drenched, like I'm physically
• 36:26
Speaker 6: I'm drenched in oil.
• 36:28
Speaker 4: Oh so it's not for the faint hearted.
• 36:31
Speaker 5: It's not for the faint of heart. It's not, and
• 36:33
Speaker 5: it's not as well.
• 36:34
Speaker 6: Like people can give you snarky comments like I do
• 36:37
Speaker 6: field service by myself, and I've gone out and I've
• 36:39
Speaker 6: been with like a one of my fitters. And then
• 36:42
Speaker 6: one day I've been out by myself and I went
• 36:44
Speaker 6: up to the same bloat whose machine's broken down again.
• 36:46
Speaker 6: He goes, oh, so when's your fitter coming. I'm like,
• 36:51
Speaker 6: I am the fitter. Like, move out the way, I'll
• 36:53
Speaker 6: fix your machine, Like you have to be you have
• 36:55
Speaker 6: to be stern, you have to be like, drat me
• 36:56
Speaker 6: to fix your effing machine or what. Yeah, and then
• 36:59
Speaker 6: if not, you just walk away. If they're going to
• 37:01
Speaker 6: be rutey, I don't fix it.
• 37:02
Speaker 5: I just turn around.
• 37:03
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 37:04
Speaker 1: Ah, the confidence you've got to have to do that, though,
• 37:07
Speaker 1: I don't know if I would have that in me.
• 37:10
Speaker 6: Yeah, you can't be sensitive, Yeah, you really can't. Like
• 37:14
Speaker 6: it's just I hate to say it, like it is
• 37:15
  Speaker 6: what it is.
• 37:16
Speaker 5: It shouldn't be, but it is. But it's also so
• 37:19
  Speaker 5: much fun.
• 37:20
Speaker 6: Like you've got what it takes to be a female
• 37:23
Speaker 6: in the industry, be physically strong and mentally strong and
• 37:26
  Speaker 6: have the backbone.
• 37:28
Speaker 5: Anything's possible. Lie, it's such a rewarding industry. It's so great.
• 37:33
Speaker 4: I love that. I love that you love your job.
• 37:35
Speaker 1: And I think that that's all we can hope that
• 37:37
Speaker 1: everybody has right to find a career that they're just
• 37:40
Speaker 1: so excited about. And I mean, I'm not up for
• 37:44
Speaker 1: being covered in oil by the end of the day,
• 37:46
Speaker 1: Like I'd be like, no, thank you, But if I
• 37:49
Speaker 1: loved my job that much, I'd be like, yeah, that's fine,
• 37:51
Speaker 1: that's just part and parcel throll like, that's absolutely fine,
• 37:54
Speaker 1: because I think that so many people would say the
• 37:56
Speaker 1: same thing about finance.
• 37:57
Speaker 4: They're like absolutely not, Like that is not my forte.
• 38:01
Speaker 5: I could not do your job sitting in an office
• 38:02
  Speaker 5: all day. Ye I couldn't.
• 38:04
Speaker 6: I physically couldn't do it. I would drive myself absolutely batty.
• 38:09
  Speaker 4: Well lucky.
• 38:10
Speaker 1: We spend most of our day in the studio now, Jes.
• 38:13
Speaker 1: But thank you so so much for joining us. I
• 38:17
Speaker 1: am so grateful to hear your story and know that
• 38:19
Speaker 1: you're in our community, just bopping along doing you like
• 38:22
Speaker 1: you are such a cool human and I feel like
• 38:25
Speaker 1: the energy that you've brought to the podcast has been
• 38:27
Speaker 1: so infectious, Like Jess and I are like, yes, let's
• 38:29
Speaker 1: do it, like I love this, so thank you so
• 38:32
Speaker 1: much for joining us. But unfortunately that is all we
• 38:35
Speaker 1: have time for this Monday.
• 38:36
