  Lived in the Catalina Foothills area of the city.

  Happens to be the mother of Savannah Guthrie who here in the

  United States is famous in her own right.

  She currently is a Co host of one of the morning shows on the
• 1:57
  national network's NB CS Today show.

  I am sure. I mean, we would be naive to

  think that if it weren't for Savannah Guthrie being the
• 2:06
  famous person that she is, we probably wouldn't know about
• 2:09
  this case. But I'm grateful for it.

  We want to keep eyeballs on the case.

  We want to keep talking about this case.

  And while the mainstream media seems to be forgetting about
• 2:22
  Nancy Guthrie, or at least are moving on to other other things.

  And I can't blame him for it, right?

  We live in a news cycle and there are a lot of things
• 2:32
  happening in the world that are super important that that that
• 2:36
  we need to be informed on. But those of us in true crime
• 2:41
  where this is our passion, this is where we put our attention.

  We don't want to forget this. We want to help bring this woman
• 2:50
  home, hopefully alive. She's 84, she has heart
• 2:55
  problems, she has a pacemaker, she needs life saving
• 2:59
  medication. But we still hope.

  We still hope, sometimes beyond hope, that it's possible that
• 3:09
  she could come home. And you know, who was it that

  reminded me here on the channel of somebody in the live chat?

  OK, So what are we talking about today?

  There has been some pretty darn terrific reporting and I have to

  say it is within the YouTube community and I have put links

  Now I know Brian Ninton is also a reporter for News Nation.

  I get it. But the style of, of reporting

  that he's doing is definitely new media and he's doing

  They're on the ground. Well, Brian is on the ground and

  he's talking with neighbors, he's knocking on doors.

  He's he's doing all the things a good reporter should do.

  We're going to get to that. But first, I want to talk a

  little bit about this notion that there were mistakes made in
• 5:00
  the investigation. Now, we're not naive people here
• 5:03
  on this channel, right? We are, we are informed people
• 5:07
  on this channel. There are going to be problems
• 5:11
  in every investigation. There are going to be mistakes
• 5:13
  in every investigation. Why?
• 5:16
  Because every investigation is done by a human being, each one
• 5:21
  of those men and women who are doing it are going to act in a
• 5:24
  human way, which means they're going to make mistakes.
• 5:27
  The other thing that we are not naive to is that the sheriff,
• 5:32
  Sheriff Chris Nanos, is a politician.
• 5:37
  That means that the incentive structure around him is slightly
• 5:42
  different than any other law enforcement officer.
• 5:46
  Now, I'm not saying that Sheriff Nanos does not want to be a good
• 5:49
  law enforcement officer or is not a good law enforcement
• 5:53
  officer. All I'm saying is by virtue of
• 5:56
  the fact that he is an elected official, he is first a
• 5:59
  politician and second, law enforcement.
• 6:03
  Now, don't worry, this is a politics free show.
• 6:06
  I, I, we keep it, keep it straight down the middle here.
• 6:10
  I, I just want to set up, set ourselves up so that we
• 6:14
  understand where, you know, what's happening.
• 6:18
  In this case, what is happening is Sheriff Nanos has more than a
• 6:24
  few detractors of his job. Why?
• 6:28
  Because he's a politician, right?
• 6:30
  And there are people that want his job, which means they want
• 6:34
  him to fail, or at least appear to be a, a failure, at least to
• 6:37
  be a, a, a worse option than they would be.
• 6:42
  And so we're going into this with our eyes wide open.
• 6:47
  We are going to be, or we're going to be watching 2 clips
• 6:52
  from the interview room. I think in total it's like 4

  But Sergeant Aaron Cross, he is my understanding is he is a

  deputy in the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

  He is also the president of the Sheriff's Association, which is
• 7:24
  basically a union, right. And he has been sued by Nanos.

  He has sued Nanos. There has been there have been
• 7:34
  allegations of retaliation there, there's there's been all
• 7:40
  sorts. So this isn't a guy who is all
• 7:43
  hunky Dory and friendly with Chris Nanos.
• 7:46
  So it's not surprising that he would have some some criticisms
• 7:52
  of the sheriff, especially if he wants the sheriff's job, which
• 7:55
  it appears that he does. Having said that, though, that
• 8:00
  also doesn't mean that he's not right.
• 8:04
  He he still may be right. I just want us to, I want us to
• 8:10
  go into this once again, eyes wide open.

  Our most senior homicide detective had three years in
• 11:56
  homicide and I don't believe any of them had been through
• 12:01
  homicide trial. I spoke with a retired, very
• 12:05
  experienced homicide detective from our agency and they told me
• 12:09
  that you can't even really call yourself a homicide detective
• 12:12
  until you've been through trial. Thrilled.
• 12:15
  Yeah, Chris, you, you probably agree with that, that until
• 12:18
  you've been just raked over the coals because this detective
• 12:21
  told me you you don't know what you don't know.
• 12:24
  It isn't until you've gone through that, that Crucible of,
• 12:28
  of trial that you start to simultaneously, they described
• 12:32
  when you, when you get to a scene, a homicide scene, you're
• 12:36
  simultaneously trying to catch the bad guy, but you're also
• 12:39
  trying to prepare the case for trial because it would be a
• 12:44
  tragic for them to go to trial and slip through your grasp
• 12:48
  because you mishandled something and you didn't do your job on
• 12:52
  the scene. So and and it's important for
• 12:56
  people to understand that it is not the detective's fault they
• 13:00
  didn't ask for this. You know, like everybody else.
• 13:04
  Yes. And if this was done
• 13:05
  appropriately, you would be bringing in new blood to then be
• 13:09
  taught and mentored by the senior deputies or detectives in
• 13:12
  the in those units. And that's how you maintain that
• 13:14
  continuity because eventually the the, the old hats are going
• 13:18
  to retire. We all know.
• 13:20
  And so in a well functioning agency, you have fresh blood
• 13:25
  coming in being taught by the senior guys and then that cycle
• 13:28
  just continues. But unfortunately, for whatever
• 13:32
  reason, I cannot explain it, they got it in their heads that
• 13:37
  they just need to create openings for for new people.
• 13:41
  And so they just arbitrarily transferred out the senior
• 13:44
  people, brought in fresh people without any mentorship.
• 13:48
  And that's just, it's just not a way to run an agency.
• 13:51
  And it's been heartbreaking for all of us to see this happen
• 13:56
  over the past five years or so. So if the lead detective, elite
• 14:01
  homicide detective has three years on the job, may or may not
• 14:04
  have been to trial and grilled on the stand, what does that
• 14:09
  mean for the Nancy Guthrie case? If if you've got somebody not
• 14:14
  not their fault, but limited experience.
• 14:20
  Yeah. And and the case was actually
• 14:23
  assigned to A2 year, not even the most senior or experienced
• 14:26
  detective in homicide. It was given to a guy with about
• 14:29
  two years homicide time and and it, it was concerning,
• 14:36
  particularly because we have experienced homicide detectives
• 14:39
  scattered throughout the agency. And in any, you know, just in
• 14:44
  our opinion, any wealth functioning agency with a good
• 14:46
  leadership would realize the problem.
• 14:49
  See, the solution is to grab these people, bring them back
• 14:53
  in, assign it to the most experienced detective because
• 14:56
  this is one of the most high profile, high profile cases our
• 14:59
  agency has ever had. All right.
• 15:01
  And that's, that's where it ends.
• 15:04
  So his what, what he's saying is that Sheriff Chris Nanos in
• 15:11
  organizing his, his Sheriff's Department, which is a big
• 15:15
  department and, and one with law enforcement powers.
• 15:18
  You guys know that I'm coming to you from Pennsylvania where the
• 15:21
  sheriff's have mostly been stripped of their, of their law
• 15:25
  enforcement powers. They do very limited things out
• 15:29
  out there. And actually where I'm from in
• 15:32
  Northern California, the sheriffs are play a very
• 15:36
  important role in law enforcement and they are imbued
• 15:41
  with powers as you know, as up to and including the power of
• 15:47
  taking a person's life. We don't think about this very
• 15:50
  often in law enforcement, right? This is something when I was,
• 15:55
  when I was working toward going to the Nevada Highway Patrol
• 15:58
  Academy, this is way back in the day.
• 15:59
  I was accepted in the Academy and ended up deciding not to go.
• 16:03
  But part of that, that whole vetting process that took like a
• 16:07
  year was we want to make sure that we're getting the right
• 16:12
  people because you have the power up to and including
• 16:16
  staking someone's freedom and taking someone's life, right?
• 16:19
  So you have to run this agency with just so much integrity and
• 16:25
  you have to run it safely, right?
• 16:31
  Sergeant Cross here his his criticism of Sheriff Nanos is
• 16:35
  that they're they arbitrarily, in his words, took the deputies
• 16:44
  with the most homicide experience out of homicide.
• 16:48
  And, and even the ones that, and this is actually very important
• 16:54
  because the the part he was talking about seeing it through
• 16:58
  trial. You can tell when you sit in a
• 17:02
  trial and you guys watch them on court TV here on YouTube all the
• 17:05
  time, right? But my experience in watching
• 17:09
  trials is mostly sitting in the gallery watching trials, right,
• 17:12
  Which comes with it. I mean, it is so much better
• 17:15
  because you can, you can look at the you can look at the jury and
• 17:22
  you can see what the jury is. Well, what you, you can try to
• 17:25
  read what the jury is thinking you, you can tell a young
• 17:31
  officer or a young expert, young meaning inexperienced, they
• 17:36
  haven't been through this a lot before versus one who has been
• 17:39
  through the gauntlet multiple times, right.
• 17:42
  Somebody who has a prepared testimony in Venango County here
• 17:46
  in western Pennsylvania, there used to be a medical examiner.
• 17:51
  Well, he was a, he worked in the coroner's office.
• 17:53
  He was a forensic pathologist. He worked in the coroner's
• 17:55
  office in Erie County and he, he testified in like 15 counties.
• 18:01
  He, he was the contracted forensic pathologist for
• 18:05
  unexplained deaths. And man, when he got on the
• 18:08
  stand, it was so, so not, not rehearsed, just so prepared that
• 18:15
  he could, he could tell the jury exactly what he means in ways
• 18:19
  that they would understand it. And he's, he's talking about
• 18:22
  very complex medical issues here, right?
• 18:25
  And then sometimes you'll get a homicide detective up there that
• 18:29
  is just like feels like this might be their first time in
• 18:33
  front of a jury. They're nervous, they're
• 18:34
  sweating. They don't have the microphone
• 18:36
  pulled up to them. They're not making eye contact
• 18:38
  with the jury. They're not explaining things
• 18:40
  well. And it's not their fault.
• 18:42
  It's that they're inexperienced. And they've got to go through it
• 18:44
  several times before they are good at communicating to a jury.
• 18:50
  And Sergeant Cross here is saying nobody like that, nobody
• 18:55
  with experience is working this case right now.
• 18:58
  The person who is assigned this case is a 2 year homicide
• 19:01
  detective. If, if that's true, I think that
• 19:05
  that is a problem and that could explain the mistakes that we saw
• 19:10
  from the beginning. Leaving the crime scene, leaving
• 19:14
  it open, letting an Amazon delivery guy walk up to the
• 19:18
  front door, letting people like Brian Etten, his producer, go up
• 19:21
  to the front door and take a picture of that blood spatter.
• 19:24
  Right. Opening, closing, opening,
• 19:27
  closing, opening, closing the scene.
• 19:30
  Those are mistakes that that I think are more likely to happen
• 19:36
  when we've got somebody running the the case that just isn't
• 19:41
  very experienced has not gone through that gauntlet multiple
• 19:44
  times. Now having said that, from the
• 19:48
  reporter side of me, the reporter side of me, I love the
• 19:54
  inexperienced guys because they'll talk to me.
• 19:59
  Sometimes they'll be, they'll try to throw their weight around
• 20:02
  a little bit, but they'll usually come and talk to me, the
• 20:05
  people that that. Have been burned by reporters in
• 20:10
  the past. They won't right.
• 20:12
  So but from a desire to get Nancy Guthrie home, we want the
• 20:17
  grizzled old detectives that have seen have been around the
• 20:22
  block a few times. So I think that's I think it's
• 20:25
  valid. It's a valid criticism if it's
• 20:28
  true. So far, we only hear it from
• 20:32
  him. Let's see.
• 20:36
  What are you asking me, Gavin? Why did you decide not to go?

  Scotch's mom? Why did I decide not to go to
• 20:45
  Tucson? Is that what you're asking?

  If that is what you're asking, it's because I have a day job.

  I can't just pick up and go to Tucson.

  I would love to be on the ground doing the work that Bryan Newton

  is doing. I feel like I've got the same

  journalistic ethics and integrity that Bryan Newton has.

  There are other Youtubers on the ground out there that I really
• 21:08
  not, I'm dubious of is how I describe it, the, the work that
• 21:12
  they're doing. But I, I would love to do that
• 21:16
  if, if I made enough money on YouTube to do this full time, I,
• 21:21
  I would be on the ground in places like this.

  I would be in Tucson, I would be in Park City, I would be, I
• 21:27
  would be down in South Carolina, I would be down in Mississippi.

  I would be everywhere. That's, that's what I would love

  I watched the entire thing last night to try to catch Sergeant

  Cross whenever he's on. He's great.

  Yeah, I so far I've been pretty impressed with, with Sergeant

  Cross for sure. OK, let's go to clip #2 from the

  interview room again, guys, if you, if you do not subscribe to

  I want to make sure that I, I think I did the right one.

  Let's just get her going here. We go, what do you see are maybe
• 22:23
  the top couple of mistakes that were made that you think could
• 22:31
  potentially impact this investigation?
• 22:35
  I, I think just from my perspective, and it's actually
• 22:40
  shared by a lot of the members and deputies and detectives is,
• 22:43
  is how the scene was handled the first night as what reliably
• 22:47
  told by people in the know that the there was a rush from
• 22:52
  command to turn that scene back over quickly for for reasons
• 22:57
  that are unclear. And I think that that was a
• 23:00
  mistake. I understand wanting to give
• 23:04
  back a home if there are other people living there and you want
• 23:11
  to, you don't want to put them out on the street.
• 23:14
  But in this case, no one else was living there.
• 23:17
  There was absolutely no reason to turn it back over.
• 23:21
  And when you go into a weird crime scene like this, you don't
• 23:24
  know what you're looking for often times until the
• 23:28
  investigation unfolds further. And then you say, oh, we need to
• 23:31
  go back and look at that again. And I think it would have been
• 23:36
  beneficial to just keep the house secure and locked down for
• 23:40
  as long as we needed. There was no rush to this.
• 23:43
  And you and and Chris, you can probably speak to this again
• 23:46
  better than I can. You get one shot at a pristine
• 23:49
  crime scene and you want to make sure that you handle it
• 23:52
  appropriately because you don't know what's going to cause you
• 23:55
  issues in the investigation or potentially in the in the in the
• 23:58
  trial. And I think it would have been
• 24:00
  best practice to in this case, this unique case to keep it
• 24:06
  secured, post security on it, keep a crime scene law going and
• 24:11
  keep everyone out unless it's investigators and the public can
• 24:16
  see this. They saw us give up the scene
• 24:19
  and then repeatedly go back out there again, that that
• 24:23
  undermines public trust and it doesn't make us look good.
• 24:27
  But again, I want to emphasize to to the listening audience
• 24:30
  that that was that was not the investigator's decision.
• 24:33
  That was all command. So According to him, that all
• 24:37
  came from Sheriff Nanos, right? That releasing the scene get it
• 24:43
  back to me. That goes to the what I was
• 24:50
  talking about before the incentive structure, right?
• 24:52
  That Sheriff Nanos is first and foremost a politician and wants
• 24:58
  to look good and wants, wants his his voters to feel safe and
• 25:04
  wants, you know, his, I don't know the, the, the neighborhood
• 25:09
  cleared out, you know, as quickly as possible to make
• 25:12
  everybody feel fine that they're doing their or something.
• 25:15
  I don't know what what made him release that scene so quickly.
• 25:21
  Now. If I remember correctly, he said
• 25:24
  that they released the scene because that's what his
• 25:26
  investigators wanted to do, Detective, And I'm sorry,
• 25:29
  Sergeant Cross here is saying that that is not the case, that
• 25:33
  it came from leadership coming down.
• 25:36
  I don't know necessarily who to believe here.
• 25:40
  I'm skeptical on both of those now and I'm not.
• 25:43
  I'm not saying that Mister Cross or Sergeant Cross is.
• 25:51
  What I'm saying is that there are incentives working on
• 25:55
  Sergeant Cross in the same way that there are incentives
• 25:58
  working on Sheriff Nanos. These are two people that don't
• 26:01
  like each other, that don't get along, that have been in legal
• 26:04
  battles with one another. Sergeant Cross represents the
• 26:09
  Deputies Association. He was elected the president.
• 26:12
  So yeah, they're very different incentive structures.
• 26:14
  But is he wrong? I, I don't know.
• 26:18
  I just don't know. But it, I mean, he's probably
• 26:24
  right about the whole public trust part of things because it
• 26:29
  does look like the Marx Brothers over there, the scene being
• 26:34
  closed off and opened and closed off.
• 26:36
  And I mean, it just looks like something that would be
• 26:40
  performed out by the Marx Brothers.
• 26:42
  It is a joke. And yeah, I'm sure that has that
• 26:48
  has made it so that the trust and the the public trust has has
• 26:54
  faltered, has waned. Now, Jen Coffendaffer when she
• 26:59
  was on with me last week, she thinks that it if it hasn't
• 27:04
  already been turned over primarily to the FBI, it should
• 27:09
  be, I think. And I agree with that.
• 27:11
  I I don't think that the that the Pima County sheriff's should
• 27:15
  be the lead agency on this one anymore.

  I just, I just don't. Let's see what your comments or
• 27:23
  your thoughts are on that. Let's see.

  Well then they left and. They were in her house.

  They were in her house for like 20 minutes and talking to her

  and she was asking questions and they were kind of vague and the

  guy didn't really speak and he kind of creeped her out.

  So they left and my niece called and said Are you sure they were

  the FBI 'cause we all had discussed about copycat crimes,

  people posing as police officers, things like that.

  So she called the 1800 FBI number and it was busy or just

  said they were busy. So she called 911 and within 15

  minutes, 10 minutes, there were seven police cars. 4 FBI agents

  said it wasn't the FBI. She was terrified.

  They swabbed her, fingerprinted the entire house.

  They swabbed her mouth. They swabbed her mouth for DNA.

  In my faith tradition, we are asked when we are young to serve

  as missionaries and we do so for either 18 months or two years.

  know, that was the minimum age to qualify for it.

  Now it's 18 years old. I went to Argentina and as a

  missionary, I, I went out to proclaim the gospel of Jesus

  Christ. That's what I did.
