- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hi there, and welcome to the Impact Ready podcast.
- 0:25I don't know if in your life you've ever had the experience
- 0:28of somebody helping you out in some way, showing up for you big
- 0:32time in sort of an unexpected way, doing some sort of act of
- 0:37kindness that came out of the blue.
- 0:40If you've ever had an experience like that, that is the kind of
- 0:43story that I'm looking for in my new project.
- 0:45It's called Proof of Light and it's basically a collection of
- 0:49stories like that from people like you about moments when
- 0:52someone made a difference in their life.
- 0:54It could be really small or it could be a big act of kindness.
- 0:57It could be the life changing kind of act of light, somebody
- 1:02showing up at the right time, or just something that reminded you
- 1:06of the good in people. Regardless, I'm starting to
- 1:10collect those stories under this project name Proof of Light so
- 1:14that I can start sharing them because when you start looking
- 1:16for the light, you begin to see more of it.
- 1:18And you also start to realize how even the smallest actions
- 1:22that we do in this world can create really powerful ripple
- 1:26effects. And honestly, I think we need to
- 1:28see more of that. So if you have a story like
- 1:30that, send it to me, send me your proof of light.
- 1:33You can send me that story through my website.
- 1:36You can use the link on my Instagram page.
- 1:38It's basically a form that you can fill out really simply.
- 1:43It's in my bio or you can e-mail me directly at
- 1:47steph@stephsaffer.com. And I will be sharing these
- 1:50stories here on the podcast. I will be putting them on social
- 1:54media channels. They're all anonymous.
- 1:56You are welcome to attach your name if you would like, but for
- 2:00the most part these will be anonymous stories and the
- 2:02purpose is simply to start shifting what we notice and
- 2:06remembering how much impact a single person or moment can have
- 2:10in our lives. Getting on to the episode here.
- 2:14In this episode we're going to talk about the power of the mind
- 2:19and our thoughts. I also want to talk about the
- 2:22necessity to consciously and intentionally create change and
- 2:26bring in new experiences for the the purpose of strengthening the
- 2:31mind. But there's this statistic that
- 2:33I think about all the time. It gets thrown out in self
- 2:36development quite a bit. And it's that we have 60, maybe
- 2:4070,000 thoughts a day. 70,000 thoughts a day is a big stat in
- 2:45self development. And the idea is that most of
- 2:49those thoughts are the same thoughts that we had the day
- 2:52before. Something like 85 to 90% is the
- 2:57number that gets thrown around. And I've heard this put out
- 2:59there quite a bit by, you know, some of the people that I really
- 3:02respect, people like Joe Dispenza.
- 3:05I think there's actually a lot to that.
- 3:07I've done a deep dive on the numbers on this because I was
- 3:10curious if this was proven to be true or if this was based on
- 3:14individual studies. And the reality is that I
- 3:17haven't been able to find one specific study that corroborates
- 3:20those numbers. The number of thoughts that we
- 3:22have in a day can range from 40 to 60,000 in some studies and
- 3:26then 4 to 8000 in other studies. But the criteria is all
- 3:30different for everything. And so I don't have a clear
- 3:33context of which studies most accurate and what number is most
- 3:38accurate. But all that to say, we're
- 3:40having thousands of thoughts a day.
- 3:42I know that that makes sense to us.
- 3:45And again, I haven't been able to corroborate how many of those
- 3:48thoughts repeat each day, whether it's 85 or 90%, whether
- 3:51it's 50%, I haven't been able to find the clear number on that.
- 3:55But, but regardless, what researchers have been able to
- 3:57show is that we have thousands of thoughts per day.
- 4:01And we can assume based on our knowledge of the subconscious
- 4:03mind, that the majority of our thoughts are similar to the days
- 4:07before because our brain likes to categorize things in systems
- 4:11and patterns. It likes to automate things, so
- 4:13it's more efficient by nature. Many of our thoughts are going
- 4:16to be similar to the days before and even the years before.
- 4:21And this is really important because a lot of people feel
- 4:23like they can't change, especially when it comes to the
- 4:27coaching world. One of the things that people
- 4:29say the most to me is, well, that person's just the way they
- 4:33are, or I'm wired this way, or I'm not sure that I can create a
- 4:37change in my life. And I want to show why that
- 4:40couldn't be further from the truth.
- 4:43What those people are probably experiencing is the sameness of
- 4:49the thoughts that they're having over and over again.
- 4:51Your brain is built for efficiency.
- 4:52It wants to conserve energy, so it runs patterns.
- 4:55It has the same interpretations and the same reactions, the same
- 4:58internal dialogue. We like efficiency in our brain
- 5:02so that we don't have to use too much energy.
- 5:05And so we automate things and we put things on loop, which is I
- 5:08think another reason why people feel they can't change is
- 5:10because they're lacking this awareness.
- 5:12They don't understand that the brain is built to create systems
- 5:16and to run in loops and patterns.
- 5:19And if we aren't intentionally choosing something different, it
- 5:23will just automatically run those programs.
- 5:26Another idea that I want to address that is really pretty
- 5:29common, and it's this understanding that the majority
- 5:32of how our brain operates and functions is run by the
- 5:36subconscious. And that by the time we get into
- 5:39our 20s and our early 30s, most of our behaviors and beliefs and
- 5:42emotional responses are kind of running on autopilot because
- 5:45they've become part of the subconscious operating system.
- 5:49This idea gets into people's heads and they start to think,
- 5:54well, if I'm not conscious of these things, then I can't ever
- 5:57change them, which means I can't ever change.
- 6:01And it gives people this false belief that therapy or coaching
- 6:05or any type of self development is sort of a futile task.
- 6:09Just because the majority of things that are happening in our
- 6:12brain are operated by the subconscious and running on
- 6:15autopilot, it does not mean that these beliefs or patterns are
- 6:20fixed by any means. It means they're deeply
- 6:23conditioned, but it doesn't mean that they're fixed.
- 6:26A huge portion of what you do everyday is automatic.
- 6:29Yes. Your reactions, your habits, the
- 6:32way you interpret situations, the thoughts that show up
- 6:36without you choosing them. That's all true.
- 6:39And a lot of those patterns didn't start last week or even
- 6:42last year. They started early when your
- 6:44brain is wiring rapidly in childhood.
- 6:48We've talked about how beliefs and stories are formed primarily
- 6:52from the ages of 6 or 7 to 15. Well, here you go again.
- 6:56You're forming beliefs about who you are, how the world works,
- 7:00what's safe, what's possible. And that's all part of our
- 7:05subconscious mind. But it doesn't mean that you
- 7:08can't create change or create shifts in your ways of thinking.
- 7:12It just means that the ways that we live our life reinforce a lot
- 7:17of these patterns. And that's kind of what we're
- 7:20dealing with when we do the same things everyday, when we think a
- 7:25lot of the same things, when the stories that we have about our
- 7:27life go uninterrupted for years and years.
- 7:30Those patterns will get reinforced through repetition,
- 7:33through our lived experiences in relationships or schooling or,
- 7:38you know, how we were raised as children, through just the
- 7:41environments that we stay in. All of that stuff reinforces
- 7:45patterns so that by the time we reach adulthood, we're not
- 7:50really starting fresh each day with our thinking.
- 7:53We're running programs. And there's nothing wrong with
- 7:56that. There's nothing wrong with you
- 7:59because your brain is doing exactly what it was designed to
- 8:02do is to conserve energy, to be efficient, and to be running
- 8:08programs. But here's the catch.
- 8:11If you keep running the same mental and emotional programs
- 8:16and patterns, what's going to happen?
- 8:18You're going to keep creating the same experiences, the same
- 8:23results and the same life. And I've experienced this
- 8:27personally in my own life. If you keep running the same
- 8:32programs and patterns, you're going to keep creating the same
- 8:35experiences in the same life. Nothing changes unless something
- 8:39interrupts the pattern. There was a client one time who
- 8:45was asking me about coaching. And this was somebody a long
- 8:50time ago who was just saying, oh, I'm not really ready.
- 8:53I'm not, you know, I'm not sure that I'm in the right place to
- 8:56be devoting time and energy to this.
- 8:58And I said, I totally get it. I just want you to be able to
- 9:03avoid living out the same six months over and over again.
- 9:08And he stopped and he said, how did you know?
- 9:10I've been feeling that way. How did you know that?
- 9:13I've been feeling like I've been living the same six months over
- 9:16and over again for the past five years.
- 9:18I keep wanting something to change.
- 9:20I keep hoping that it does and trying to do things to create
- 9:23it, and nothing ever does. And I was like, that is exactly
- 9:28what people face. That's where those subconscious
- 9:31programs and patterns start stepping in and creating the
- 9:35same experience, the same results, the same life.
- 9:39And that's also where coaching and self development and
- 9:41intentional growth come in. It's so awesome because when
- 9:46you're in a place where you're open minded and where you are
- 9:50expecting to challenge the beliefs that you have a place
- 9:54like coaching, it just it provides a scenario where you're
- 9:58introducing new information to people and they are curious
- 10:01about it. They're ready to accept it.
- 10:03Most coaching clients want this. They're here, they're looking
- 10:07for a change, and so they're operating under this new belief
- 10:10that something will shift. They're open hearted, they're
- 10:13open minded, and it sets the stage for that evolution to
- 10:17occur. Coaching is not the only way you
- 10:20can do this. Anything novel will create that
- 10:22same scenario. You know the experience of when
- 10:25you're traveling. Say you're on a trip to Europe
- 10:28and it seems like the trip lasted forever.
- 10:31You were there for seven days, but you can remember every
- 10:33moment of every single day. You remember what the food
- 10:36tasted like and where you were every part of the day and what
- 10:40things smelled like. Whereas in your day-to-day life,
- 10:44you can barely remember what you did yesterday, let alone 2 days
- 10:47ago, or who you talked to or what you ate.
- 10:50Because it all just kind of runs together.
- 10:53That's because of this concept of novelty.
- 10:56It forces presence when you are creating new thoughts and new
- 11:00neural pathways. Like when you're traveling to a
- 11:02new place, your brain is being asked to take in and process
- 11:06information that it maybe wasn't exposed to before.
- 11:10Especially when you're in a country with foreign food or a
- 11:13foreign language that you don't necessarily speak.
- 11:16That is so much novelty. And this is a beautiful
- 11:20experience for the brain because it puts its neuroplasticity to
- 11:24the test, meaning it has the brain flexing the muscles, so to
- 11:30speak, of building new neural pathways and new ways to
- 11:33classify memories and information.
- 11:36And that's why you remember all of it.
- 11:37That's why it lives so vividly in your brain now.
- 11:42The same thing can happen to a lesser degree, anytime you do
- 11:45something new or novel. Just learning new information is
- 11:49going to ask your brain to start processing and creating new
- 11:53neural pathways in a different way.
- 11:56And I find this especially true with mindset.
- 11:58We always talk about perspective, the way that we see
- 12:01the world, and we also talk about stories, the inner critic,
- 12:05voices in our head, the saboteurs, or even just the
- 12:08stories that we tell about who we are, where we live, or our
- 12:12life circumstances. Until we ask the brain to shift
- 12:15or change, it will continue to repeat the same patterns and
- 12:19thoughts on loop for years and years.
- 12:23With mindset work introducing new ideas, new perspectives, new
- 12:28beliefs or stories, your brain has the ability to shift and
- 12:32create new ways of thinking. It's just what we said earlier.
- 12:35The brain might be deeply conditioned, but it is not
- 12:37fixed. We always have the ability to
- 12:40change. I think we forget that
- 12:42sometimes. One of the things clients will
- 12:45say to me often is something along the lines of God, I didn't
- 12:49realize how simple this was, or man, this is so simple.
- 12:53How did I not think of this before?
- 12:55Or I feel so silly. This seems so obvious.
- 12:59I have people say that all the time because it really isn't
- 13:02rocket science. It's just new and it's asking
- 13:05your brain to break the pattern, break the loop and think
- 13:10differently. It's a perfect example of how
- 13:13without new stimulus, we'll just go along thinking, saying,
- 13:16feeling the same things over and over again, just like we did the
- 13:19day before. It's why I love to think about
- 13:23new ways to stimulate the brain. Learning something new, going to
- 13:27a new place, taking a different route, playing a different
- 13:30sport, learning a language, or honestly just having some good
- 13:34old fashioned great conversation with people that aren't
- 13:38necessarily the same people you talk to everyday are your oldest
- 13:41friends. Essentially, if you don't
- 13:45introduce something new, new inputs, new thoughts, new
- 13:49environments, new ways of thinking, your brain will
- 13:51default to what it already knows Now.
- 13:54We couldn't have a conversation about beliefs and thoughts
- 13:57looping and thinking without acknowledging that little area
- 14:00of the brain called the reticular activating system.
- 14:03It's that area that filters information.
- 14:05Remember, there are thousands of pieces of information coming at
- 14:08you every second. And it's the brain's job to
- 14:11filter out what's most important for survival and well-being.
- 14:15And of course, it has a system for that.
- 14:16But often our brain filter is based on old beliefs and values
- 14:20that we associate with our self concept, our sense of identity.
- 14:25And in really simple terms, the research shows that your brain
- 14:28filters reality to match what you expect.
- 14:31Whether this is the same old feelings or thoughts, everyday
- 14:34familiar patterns, predictable outcomes, whatever it might be,
- 14:38your brain filters reality to match what you expect.
- 14:41So again, here's the importance of having exposure to new
- 14:44experiences. The moment you introduce
- 14:47novelty, something shifts you createspace and you get to
- 14:51disrupt the the thinking loop. You give yourself a chance to
- 14:54act differently and ultimately become someone different.
- 14:58And that's what my coaching clients are always exclaiming
- 15:01about. That's the sentiment behind man.
- 15:03I can't believe how simple this stuff really is.
- 15:06And that's really what Impact Ready is all about.
- 15:08It's not waiting for life to change, but instead you're
- 15:11deciding on purpose to change the way that you show up within
- 15:15your life. It's all about bringing
- 15:17awareness to what's been running in the background for so many
- 15:20years, sometimes decades, and then choosing consciously what
- 15:25stays and what goes. So even though I don't know the
- 15:28exact number, whether it's 10,000 or 70,000 thoughts per
- 15:31day, the point remains the same for me in this episode.
- 15:35In order to be sure that we're not repeating our same reality
- 15:39every single day based on our same thoughts and feelings and
- 15:42perspectives, we must intentionally introduce change
- 15:46and novel new experiences. We have to choose growth.
- 15:50I really believe that that's a big part of being able to create
- 15:53a life by our own design and not just fall into a life that's not
- 15:57even of our own choosing. So I hope this spurred on some
- 16:00thoughts for you and I hope that you have an incredible week.
- 16:03I appreciate you being here. Send me your proof of light
- 16:06stories and thank you for being ready to impact.
- 16:10Thanks for listening to Impact Ready.
- 16:12I hope today's episode inspired you to own your impact and
- 16:15recognize that you are powerful. By elevating our energy and
- 16:19awareness, we can create exponential change in this life.
- 16:23If you enjoyed today's insights, share them with a friend and
- 16:25subscribe to the show for more. I truly appreciate you.
- 16:28Thanks again for being here.
