- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud your
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to The Money, the podcast for millennials
- 1:02Speaker 2: who want financial freedom. Welcome back to another one of
- 1:06Speaker 2: our Friday Drinks episodes where we get to celebrate the community,
- 1:10Speaker 2: share our money wins and confessions, and have a cheeky
- 1:13Speaker 2: little beverage with our friends. Everyone in the audience seems
- 1:16Speaker 2: to have a beverage as well, which I think is
- 1:18Speaker 2: a ten out of ten. We're going to have a
- 1:21Speaker 2: chance to answer today some of our questions from our community.
- 1:24Speaker 2: We're going to chat a little bit about my new book.
- 1:26Speaker 2: She's On the Money and in the second half of
- 1:29Speaker 2: this episode Slash Live show, we are going to be
- 1:32Speaker 2: inviting a very special guest, my friend and also she's
- 1:37Speaker 2: On the Money community member, Sammy Rose. But before we
- 1:40Speaker 2: get there, as always, it is time to catch up
- 1:43Speaker 2: on the week that was Miss jessic RICI, how are you?
- 1:47Speaker 2: I'm really good. How are you? I'm Aura, I'm very tired.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Actually, you know what, It's that default thing of when
- 1:53Speaker 4: someone asks you how you are doing, like, oh, yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 4: I'm great, when sometimes you're not. And I am very excited,
- 1:57Speaker 4: but I am very tired.
- 1:59Speaker 2: We actually we did like a full blown meditation slash
- 2:02Speaker 2: half nap before we came today. It was like three
- 2:05Speaker 2: pm and we had to come to like do set
- 2:07Speaker 2: up and pack all of your gorgeous gift bags. And
- 2:09Speaker 2: Jess was like, let's go down to the pool. I'm
- 2:12Speaker 2: so excited, Like we're staying at this beautiful hotel. We're
- 2:15Speaker 2: in Queensland. We don't know what hot weather is, so
- 2:17Speaker 2: she wanted to experience it. And I was like laying
- 2:20Speaker 2: on the bed waiting for her to change into her swimmers,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and when she came out, she said, what are you doing?
- 2:24Speaker 2: I was like just having a little power nap and
- 2:26Speaker 2: she's like, do you think we should just have an
- 2:28Speaker 2: app instead of going to the pool. And I was like, yeah, babe,
- 2:30Speaker 2: I did a meditation and you took a nap. Okay,
- 2:34Speaker 2: So we put a meditation on. It was meant to
- 2:36Speaker 2: be twenty minutes of meditation. It was just like an app.
- 2:39Speaker 2: I'm obviously not talented enough to run that myself. And
- 2:43Speaker 2: the timer went off to be like, now it's time
- 2:45Speaker 2: to get up, and I was like, extend snooze and
- 2:48Speaker 2: justs is like, get up. So she goes and has
- 2:49Speaker 2: a shower and I'm still in bed when she comes back,
- 2:52Speaker 2: and she just wasn't that impressed with me, And I
- 2:54Speaker 2: get it. I get it. But I am well rested
- 2:56Speaker 2: and very excited for this show. Me too.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I feel like we've got to catch up. But something
- 3:01Speaker 4: else that's going on a lot, and something that we
- 3:03Speaker 4: both love talking about. And we had a few beautiful
- 3:05Speaker 4: community members backstage with us earlier and they were also
- 3:08Speaker 4: very excited to talk about.
- 3:09Speaker 2: It was wedding planning. You're in the thick of that now.
- 3:12Speaker 4: And I was going through our dms before and someone
- 3:14Speaker 4: actually said, when's the wedding den Blake coming out, and
- 3:17Speaker 4: I was like, it's coming, but it's something that we've
- 3:19Speaker 4: been having a lot of fun chatting about in the office,
- 3:21Speaker 4: and something that we're getting a lot of questions because
- 3:23Speaker 4: I guess everybody's getting married, not me, James, hint, hint.
- 3:27Speaker 2: But I'm going to tell him they listen to this
- 3:30Speaker 2: episode and just this one nothing. I'll just send him
- 3:32Speaker 2: the audio snippet. To be honest, it's much easier get
- 3:34Speaker 2: the point across, be real direct. But you're in the
- 3:37Speaker 2: thick of it right now, VD, how is it all going.
- 3:39Speaker 2: There's a reason wedding content hasn't come out yet, and
- 3:42Speaker 2: that's because I'm embarrassed of the way I've been marryingingging
- 3:45Speaker 2: my budget. It's really bad. Turns out, managing a wedding
- 3:49Speaker 2: budget is actually much harder than I had had thought
- 3:51Speaker 2: it might be. In my role as a financial advisor,
- 3:55Speaker 2: I have helped clients through this process and I'm like, oh,
- 3:57Speaker 2: it's fine, just make sure you stick to the budget.
- 4:00Speaker 2: When they're like, oh, we're a little bit over on florals,
- 4:02Speaker 2: like baby, it's time to get a new quote, like
- 4:04Speaker 2: you need to find somebody else, like sticking to the
- 4:06Speaker 2: budget's really important. And now I'm picking and I'm like, no,
- 4:10Speaker 2: we're not going with any other florist. That it's the
- 4:12Speaker 2: only one I want, honey, Like, I don't understand why
- 4:15Speaker 2: it's so hard for you to combrand. So yeah, it's
- 4:18Speaker 2: going well, thanks for asking.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Wedding content will be coming, but we want to get
- 4:23Speaker 4: it right. And obviously it turns out planning wedding takes
- 4:26Speaker 4: up a lot of time, and he's very busy, and
- 4:27Speaker 4: then you actually have to get married, then you actually
- 4:29Speaker 4: go on a honeymoon. So probably early twenty twenty threes
- 4:33Speaker 4: when that will all be coming out. We have a
- 4:35Speaker 4: whole bunch of it planned. But this is the last
- 4:37Speaker 4: show of the Torch. We talk a little bit about
- 4:39Speaker 4: twenty twenty three in general, because where.
- 4:41Speaker 2: We have so much end of the year, if we
- 4:43Speaker 2: have so much coming up, and it's not like we
- 4:45Speaker 2: didn't do enough this year, but I genuinely feel like
- 4:48Speaker 2: we didn't do enough this year, Like we've got so
- 4:50Speaker 2: much to go. Obviously we've got a whole bunch of
- 4:52Speaker 2: wedding content coming up for the men in the room, Like,
- 4:55Speaker 2: you guys are so lucky, and I know you can't
- 4:57Speaker 2: wait for your partners to ask for in agement rings. Yeah, yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 2: I'm going to be promoting that. But wedding content, what else,
- 5:05Speaker 2: jess Have we got We've got I don't know.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Our beautiful events coordinator Rochet's here, and I don't know
- 5:10Speaker 4: if I'm going to get in trouble. I'm trying to
- 5:12Speaker 4: see if I can see her. I can't see any
- 5:13Speaker 4: If she's angry, I'm not going to know. But we
- 5:16Speaker 4: are planning, the.
- 5:16Speaker 2: One running around making sure everyone's doing their job.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Yeah, and she's doing a great job of keeping us
- 5:21Speaker 4: in lines like hurting cattle. Sometimes we're just really difficult.
- 5:24Speaker 4: But we are planning at the moment for International Women's Day.
- 5:28Speaker 4: She's very exciting. If you guys remember last year, yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 4: we'll no, they did.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Because we didn't give them an event last year. Jessica,
- 5:35Speaker 2: this is our first time in Brisbane. We didn't even
- 5:37Speaker 2: mention that, which is very exciting. If yeah, everyone's like, ah,
- 5:44Speaker 2: well I get married, No one collaps I come to Brisbane.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Everyone's like whoah, Like all right, get your priorities straight.
- 5:51Speaker 4: That You'll be happy to know that Brisbane is looking
- 5:53Speaker 4: like it will be on the list. We are so
- 5:59Speaker 4: excited to be out here first time, and I mean,
- 6:01Speaker 4: if the crowd is anything like it's been so far,
- 6:03Speaker 4: I don't see how we can't come.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Turn out of ten And it's much better because it's
- 6:06Speaker 2: mainly not me talking and international Wednesday. You get actually
- 6:09Speaker 2: good guests, Like it's not just podcast content guests. Yeah, Like,
- 6:13Speaker 2: but you're not really a guest, are you? Like you
- 6:15Speaker 2: are half the show, aren't you?
- 6:18Speaker 1: Well?
- 6:18Speaker 4: I mean I guess we need get it like that,
- 6:21Speaker 4: but no, So there's that coming up. We're planning a
- 6:24Speaker 4: lot of really fun podcast content. We're working on bringing
- 6:27Speaker 4: back a show as well that a lot of people
- 6:30Speaker 4: might remember and love called The Property Playbook, which is
- 6:33Speaker 4: very fun.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Which to butt in here, Jess is obviously very excited
- 6:37Speaker 2: about because she's now the entire host of that show,
- 6:41Speaker 2: Like she has her own show. Guys, that's worthy of celebration.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Uh, you guys are really nice to me. But yeah,
- 6:49Speaker 4: as someone who is literally trying and currently failing to
- 6:52Speaker 4: buy a house, I'm very excited. We have some great
- 6:55Speaker 4: guests for that season. It is such a good show,
- 6:58Speaker 4: and we have i mean not just plug it all,
- 7:00Speaker 4: but while I'm here, why not we have a really
- 7:02Speaker 4: good Facebook group, we have an Instagram and I know
- 7:04Speaker 4: that a lot of people are on kind of the
- 7:06Speaker 4: same journey that I am right now. So if you're
- 7:09Speaker 4: having a hard time looking for a property, or if
- 7:10Speaker 4: you just bought a property, or if you're thinking about
- 7:12Speaker 4: buying a property, or.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Now you don't even like property at all, but.
- 7:15Speaker 4: You like me, that's a good one. Come and join
- 7:18Speaker 4: those groups and keep an eye out because that podcast
- 7:20Speaker 4: will be coming back and I am super tooper pumped
- 7:22Speaker 4: about it.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I'm super excited about that second half of the year.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I think we're bringing back the Business Bible, but I'm
- 7:27Speaker 2: going to make no promises on that because that's not
- 7:29Speaker 2: Just's priority. She's like, no, I don't care about that.
- 7:31Speaker 2: You work that one out. So that will be back. Obviously,
- 7:34Speaker 2: we are probably going to try and push a lot
- 7:36Speaker 2: more book content, and when it comes to International Women's Day,
- 7:40Speaker 2: I am I'm just excited for that because it's such
- 7:43Speaker 2: an engaging event. I know you guys didn't get to
- 7:46Speaker 2: enjoy it last year, but to be able to bring
- 7:48Speaker 2: it to a new state for us, like I know
- 7:51Speaker 2: that we're on a very shiny stage at the moment,
- 7:53Speaker 2: so it probably looks like we're a bigger business than
- 7:56Speaker 2: we are, but like we are a very small team.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Like in the She's on the Money team, there is
- 8:00Speaker 2: just five of us because to be honest, that's all
- 8:02Speaker 2: like an afford to have on bay Roll at this
- 8:04Speaker 2: point in time, and the idea of you know, getting
- 8:07Speaker 2: everybody up to Brisbane and doing the events like events
- 8:10Speaker 2: are you know, arguably very expensive, but like, I'm so
- 8:14Speaker 2: proud of the team to get to a point where
- 8:15Speaker 2: we're like, Okay, we're probably going to do Brisbane and
- 8:18Speaker 2: there's the possibility of Perth if we can make it
- 8:21Speaker 2: all work out like that to me is insane because
- 8:24Speaker 2: even doing events a couple of years ago was an
- 8:26Speaker 2: absolute pipe dream. And now we get to see all
- 8:29Speaker 2: of you. And as much as this podcast recording is
- 8:32Speaker 2: so fun, my favorite part is after the recording when
- 8:36Speaker 2: we get to all hang out. We're all sharing a
- 8:37Speaker 2: drink and I get to potentially sign your books if
- 8:39Speaker 2: you want me to sign your books, and all right,
- 8:43Speaker 2: we'll girl. I get to sign your books, but I
- 8:48Speaker 2: also get to like talk to you about your money
- 8:50Speaker 2: wins and confessions, so please come up and tell me them,
- 8:52Speaker 2: Like it makes my heart so insanely happy Jess. Should
- 8:56Speaker 2: we get into money wins and confessions? Let's do it,
- 8:58Speaker 2: and let's do it all right, It's time for our
- 9:00Speaker 2: budget direct money Wins and Confessions of the week, Miss
- 9:03Speaker 2: Jesse Ricci, what have you got for us?
- 9:05Speaker 4: My first win is from Kieran, who said I'd been
- 9:08Speaker 4: looking at this fancy Pat McGrath makeup palette at Sephora
- 9:11Speaker 4: for a few months and saved up. Then Sephora had
- 9:14Speaker 4: a sale, so I got twenty percent off, plus I
- 9:16Speaker 4: used the money I had in my shop back account
- 9:19Speaker 4: to buy a forty dollars Sephora voutcher, So a two
- 9:22Speaker 4: hundred and ten dollars makeup palette came down to one
- 9:24Speaker 4: hundred and twenty eight dollars, which was the exact amount
- 9:27Speaker 4: that I had in my spledge account. And I feel like,
- 9:29Speaker 4: if that's not the universe saying buy the.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Palette, I don't know what is the Pat McGrath Palette's
- 9:34Speaker 2: like nobody, nobody else is gonna care about at McGrath.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Did I say McGrath? I mean that's cute, thank you? Yeah?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Are you serious? Pat McGrath is not in our audience?
- 9:46Speaker 2: Are you're joking? What you're shitting me? I was like, Bye,
- 9:52Speaker 2: they're real expensive. Why are you at the back? What
- 9:58Speaker 2: is going on? But they're really good and they're really expensive,
- 10:02Speaker 2: so that's actually a money win anyway, someone's excited, not
- 10:06Speaker 2: just Pat mcgra alright, moving on. I was like, low key,
- 10:09Speaker 2: get get hers. Talk to her sponsorship opportunity right there.
- 10:13Speaker 2: If anyone does know, Pat mcgradats right here, Like, just
- 10:17Speaker 2: slide on into my DMS. I will accept it inzero
- 10:19Speaker 2: point two seconds. All right, I have one, not as
- 10:22Speaker 2: exciting as a makeup palette, but I feel like I've
- 10:25Speaker 2: picked this one because it was about the Gold Coast.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I don't know if anyone goes on holiday to the
- 10:29Speaker 2: Gold Coast if you live here, I feel like that's
- 10:33Speaker 2: where the tourist. Yeah, but I've got a money win
- 10:36Speaker 2: about the Gold Coast anyway. This is from OL friend Melissa.
- 10:39Speaker 2: She says, I went on holiday to the Gold Coast
- 10:41Speaker 2: and I wanted theme park passes. I checked with my
- 10:44Speaker 2: IRAC membership, and instead of paying one hundred and sixty
- 10:47Speaker 2: nine dollars per ticket, we got to pay one hundred
- 10:49Speaker 2: and forty five dollars per ticket, which meant that she
- 10:52Speaker 2: got ice cream and drinks. They're basically in her books
- 10:55Speaker 2: for free, which is an absolute money win. She also
- 10:58Speaker 2: took packed lunches.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Which meant they didn't spend any more than they had
- 11:01Speaker 4: originally budgeted. Is everybody ready for me to change your
- 11:05Speaker 4: view of Victoria Divine Forever? We obviously, yeah, I know,
- 11:09Speaker 4: becore we came up we're obviously so close to the Goldie.
- 11:12Speaker 4: I personally haven't been up here since a family holiday
- 11:15Speaker 4: like fifteen years ago. And I was still where she's
- 11:18Speaker 4: going with this because we were in really close proximity
- 11:21Speaker 4: to the theme parks. And I said, oh my gosh,
- 11:23Speaker 4: can we go to a theme park? Because that's what
- 11:25Speaker 4: you do want to work?
- 11:26Speaker 2: Jessica Ricky is a Disney adult, so that comment made
- 11:29Speaker 2: a lot of sense. And Victoria said to me, I
- 11:32Speaker 2: don't really like theme parks. And I was like, what
- 11:36Speaker 2: do you mean? You don't like who?
- 11:37Speaker 4: I don't think I've ever in my life met somebody
- 11:40Speaker 4: who said they didn't like theme parks.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Theme parks suck like they they are. I know we're
- 11:46Speaker 2: talking probably to the wrong ground here, but they are
- 11:49Speaker 2: full of small children who are screeching, people who don't
- 11:53Speaker 2: know how to walk in a straight line, and people
- 11:55Speaker 2: who walk insanely slow, overpriced cold chips that are melted,
- 12:01Speaker 2: and rides that make me nearly poop my pants. Like
- 12:04Speaker 2: I just have no interest in this. Sounds like a
- 12:08Speaker 2: great day out to me. I was like a terrible
- 12:10Speaker 2: day out. We just sidetracking this for a hot second.
- 12:13Speaker 2: We just got back from the US. We went to
- 12:15Speaker 2: fin Con, which I was so excited about. The will
- 12:19Speaker 2: I think came from the girls I went with, from
- 12:21Speaker 2: my millennium money, because no one else in this room
- 12:23Speaker 2: is excited about content like that. But I was so
- 12:27Speaker 2: excited to go, and I said to Jess, like, let's
- 12:29Speaker 2: go to FINCN She's like, one, what is Fincon? Explained it.
- 12:32Speaker 2: It's a finance content creators conference, Like so exciting. And
- 12:37Speaker 2: Jess is like, oh so we're like you know, let's
- 12:40Speaker 2: just budget this properly. So like maybe you go and
- 12:43Speaker 2: then if it's good next year, I'll go. Like she
- 12:45Speaker 2: was trying to get out of it, and I was like, oh, okay,
- 12:48Speaker 2: no worries. Well, Disney World's there. She's like, oh my gosh,
- 12:51Speaker 2: I'll look at flights. It's all good. It's all good.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I'll come. I'll come. So yeah, like you're through and
- 12:57Speaker 2: through theme part person. But I genuinely think of anything worse.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And when I have children, I will literally not tell
- 13:04Speaker 2: them that theme parks exist. Like they'll be like, oh
- 13:08Speaker 2: my god, Disney. I'll be like, yeah, they're just movies
- 13:12Speaker 2: like done done, the belief place that doesn't exist. Oh
- 13:15Speaker 2: my gosh.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Well maybe that's a future money in for you and
- 13:17Speaker 4: a life loss for your children.
- 13:19Speaker 2: You know what. I hope you're still around because you
- 13:21Speaker 2: can take them. Auntie. Jess will be the fun Auntie.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Let me tell you my next money win though it
- 13:27Speaker 4: comes from Laura, and she said money win. I've been
- 13:29Speaker 4: waiting for shot back to have an upsized cash back
- 13:32Speaker 4: with the company I'm planning on getting my wedding invitations
- 13:35Speaker 4: from more wedding content. You're welcome, she said. So today
- 13:38Speaker 4: I was checking and there was an upsized cash back
- 13:40Speaker 4: and the website was having a sale. So I got
- 13:43Speaker 4: all of my wedding stationary ordered for under one hundred dollars,
- 13:46Speaker 4: plus I got ten point five percent cash back.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Am I insane? For going one hundred dollars?
- 13:51Speaker 4: Seems like a lot of money for letter letters like
- 13:54Speaker 4: to invite people. Oh, everyone's like, girl, you've got no idea.
- 13:58Speaker 4: I can hear it in the audience. You can tell
- 14:00Speaker 4: that I'm not engaged or married.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 2: No, no, So that was another thing that I didn't
- 14:05Speaker 2: budget for properly. I thought stationary was going to be
- 14:09Speaker 2: like office works prices, like that's where you get stationary.
- 14:13Speaker 2: And I run a business, so I buy stationary. So
- 14:15Speaker 2: I clearly know what stationary costs. Right, No, no, no, no,
- 14:19Speaker 2: wedding stationary is very expensive. It's why half of my
- 14:22Speaker 2: invitations became emails. Yeah. I was like, you can have
- 14:26Speaker 2: one thing and one thing only, and it will be
- 14:28Speaker 2: the RSVP card, and it'll be in an extra small
- 14:31Speaker 2: envelope and we are done, and I will give you
- 14:34Speaker 2: a copy if you want it, like I'll print one
- 14:36Speaker 2: off my printer. But otherwise, here's this email. See that's
- 14:39Speaker 2: how your RSVP to my wedding, right, Like you got
- 14:41Speaker 2: saved a date in a mail and you're like, wow,
- 14:42Speaker 2: that's a nice email. I thought it was really good
- 14:47Speaker 2: guy environmentally friendly. Yeah, exactly, it was for the environment.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I have a money when it is from our friend Rachel,
- 14:55Speaker 2: and she says, so I've been really trying hard to
- 14:58Speaker 2: pay off my buy now, pay later services because I
- 15:01Speaker 2: know that they are so detrimental to my future financial freedom.
- 15:04Speaker 2: And I'm a bit of an impulse buyer, but I'm
- 15:07Speaker 2: really conscious with my spending now. Anyway, I finally paid
- 15:11Speaker 2: off a buy now, pay later service with a Big
- 15:13Speaker 2: four bank, and as I went to close the account
- 15:16Speaker 2: with the contact center, I was advised that I'd actually
- 15:19Speaker 2: overpaid by three hundred and six dollars. So my money
- 15:23Speaker 2: win was not only did I finally pay it all
- 15:26Speaker 2: off and close the account for good, I mistakenly also
- 15:30Speaker 2: saved or overpaid three hundred and six dollars, which is
- 15:34Speaker 2: now going straight into my savings. I love that. I
- 15:37Speaker 2: think that's a good money win.
- 15:39Speaker 4: My favorite part is when you said three hundred and
- 15:40Speaker 4: six dollars, Like a few people are like, oh, like
- 15:43Speaker 4: I really some people are enjoying that one.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Girlfriend three hundred bucks, like you're halfway to buying some
- 15:49Speaker 2: stationary for a wedding. Like that's a lot of money.
- 15:53Speaker 2: That is a lot of money. It has been great
- 15:56Speaker 2: celebrating some of your budget Direct money wins. Budget Direct
- 15:59Speaker 2: winn of can Stars Insurer of the Year Award twenty
- 16:02Speaker 2: twenty two. Budget Direct insurance self.
- 16:06Speaker 4: I should put you on the commercial just for that
- 16:08Speaker 4: finger gun, because I feel like, if anything's going to
- 16:11Speaker 4: sell insurance.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Got that on camera, because I'm going to send it
- 16:13Speaker 2: to them.
- 16:14Speaker 4: We're getting into talking all about the reason that everybody
- 16:16Speaker 4: is here, which is investing, which is very fun. If
- 16:20Speaker 4: you had said to me that I would be spending
- 16:21Speaker 4: a Saturday night in a room full of people to
- 16:23Speaker 4: talk about investing a couple of years ago, the response
- 16:26Speaker 4: you got from me is something that I can't say
- 16:28Speaker 4: on this podcast because we don't swear.
- 16:30Speaker 2: No, do you know why we don't swear. It's not
- 16:32Speaker 2: because we don't swear in person, because we definitely do.
- 16:35Speaker 2: It's actually so that we can rate our podcast as
- 16:38Speaker 2: not explicit, which means it'll like ran higher so you
- 16:43Speaker 2: can plain in the car with your children and not
- 16:45Speaker 2: bite my head off. It's really good. It's really good.
- 16:47Speaker 2: But we learned that early on, and now I sound
- 16:49Speaker 2: far more articulate than I actually am, and people like, Wow,
- 16:52Speaker 2: you're so classy, and I'm like, mmmm, that's my editor.
- 16:57Speaker 2: It makes me sound so good.
- 16:59Speaker 4: We have a few questions that were asked here, and
- 17:01Speaker 4: I know that we're pushing our time so I might
- 17:03Speaker 4: just pick the one that I think most people in
- 17:05Speaker 4: this room probably can relate to probably at some point
- 17:08Speaker 4: have wondered if they've started their investment journey, and that is,
- 17:12Speaker 4: once you have started investing, it's a very exciting step.
- 17:15Speaker 4: What is the best way to track your progress? Because
- 17:18Speaker 4: I know that for me sometimes I look at people,
- 17:21Speaker 4: you know, when we talked about money dirists, for example,
- 17:23Speaker 4: and I hear people say one of our recent dirests
- 17:25Speaker 4: was like, I have two hundred thousand dollars in super
- 17:27Speaker 4: and somebody else has a fifty thousand dollar portfolio, and
- 17:29Speaker 4: I'm like, my spaceship has some hundreds in it, and
- 17:33Speaker 4: that's okay. And it's kind of in the red right now.
- 17:36Speaker 4: And it can be hard firstly to track my personal progress,
- 17:39Speaker 4: but also I guess comparing where I'm at personally to
- 17:43Speaker 4: where people who started before me or after me, or
- 17:46Speaker 4: whatever that might look like where they are now.
- 17:48Speaker 2: So how do we track that?
- 17:50Speaker 4: I guess both ourselves but also from a handy admin
- 17:53Speaker 4: point of view as well.
- 17:55Speaker 2: So I think you hit the nail on the head
- 17:57Speaker 2: accidentally when you said track my pro Like you are
- 18:01Speaker 2: tracking your own progress, You're not looking at what your
- 18:04Speaker 2: friend did. You're not looking at what you know the
- 18:07Speaker 2: guy down the road did, or the influencer that is
- 18:09Speaker 2: selling you bitcoin on Instagram is doing. I definitely don't
- 18:13Speaker 2: look at them. Yeah, don't look at them. Don't look
- 18:14Speaker 2: at our Instagram comments either. I swear someone has a
- 18:18Speaker 2: lot of money to be paying those bots to do
- 18:20Speaker 2: what they do. Like, if you know them, let me know,
- 18:22Speaker 2: because I would love to have that type of promotion
- 18:25Speaker 2: for She's on the Money. Can you imagine like every
- 18:28Speaker 2: single post someone else did I invested with She's on
- 18:31Speaker 2: the Money. Like that would be sick. Anyway, I digress.
- 18:34Speaker 2: So it's about tracking your own progress. It's not about
- 18:38Speaker 2: tracking somebody else's. I think comparison is absolutely the thief
- 18:42Speaker 2: of all joy. But it's about actually setting clear goals
- 18:46Speaker 2: and remembering that progress is important, but it's not essential.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Sometimes life happens, and it doesn't mean that we have
- 18:55Speaker 2: to be at a certain point. And by consistently rechecking
- 18:59Speaker 2: with that goal and going does that actually still make
- 19:01Speaker 2: sense to me? Like if you were saving for your
- 19:03Speaker 2: first home and then you started listening to Shes on
- 19:05Speaker 2: the Money in the Property Playbook and you're like, wait,
- 19:07Speaker 2: I don't even want to own property, and then you're
- 19:10Speaker 2: comparing yourself to that goal in the future, Like that
- 19:12Speaker 2: makes no sense because it's no longer aligned to your values.
- 19:15Speaker 2: So I think we need to one have really clean,
- 19:18Speaker 2: clear goals Jesse. In my first book, how Wanky I
- 19:22Speaker 2: Love It. In my first book, I talked about, you know,
- 19:25Speaker 2: setting smart goals, and I summarized those down to the
- 19:28Speaker 2: SotM goals because smart was just too long for me. Also,
- 19:32Speaker 2: it was way more on brand, so we summarized it down.
- 19:35Speaker 2: But having trackable, clear, articulated goals that make sense, not
- 19:40Speaker 2: just goals that are like, oh, I'd love to save
- 19:41Speaker 2: for a house, and then I asked someone what are
- 19:44Speaker 2: you doing for that? They're like, oh, I've just got
- 19:45Speaker 2: a savings account putting my savings in there. Like how much?
- 19:48Speaker 4: When? Where?
- 19:48Speaker 2: Why? What's our goal? What's our goal date? How does
- 19:51Speaker 2: that work? How do I help you track that? Progress?
- 19:53Speaker 2: I think is really important. But it's also about not
- 19:56Speaker 2: just hoping you get to the end. It's about sell
- 20:00Speaker 2: reading the small successes and celebrating as we go along,
- 20:03Speaker 2: because small progress is progress and it's brilliant and it's beautiful.
- 20:08Speaker 2: And I think even if you're not making progress, that
- 20:11Speaker 2: is progress in itself if you're able to identify it
- 20:14Speaker 2: and say, all right, like, I'm probably not saving what
- 20:16Speaker 2: I thought I would. Let's go back to the drawing board.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Let's redo our budget and our cash flow and actually
- 20:22Speaker 2: sit down and work out what that means. Because just
- 20:25Speaker 2: because you're not meeting that goal means you're failing at it.
- 20:27Speaker 2: It just means there's something else happening that you need
- 20:29Speaker 2: to identify, and that's cool, we just need to work
- 20:31Speaker 2: it out. If it means that you're going out a
- 20:34Speaker 2: little bit too often and blowing your savings, like maybe
- 20:36Speaker 2: you want to have a chat about maybe pushing that
- 20:38Speaker 2: goal off because you really enjoy that and didn't prioritize
- 20:42Speaker 2: it enough at the start. So I think it's really
- 20:44Speaker 2: about prioritizing you and your values and your goals and
- 20:47Speaker 2: tracking only based on past you, because if you start
- 20:51Speaker 2: looking at what everybody else is going to do or
- 20:53Speaker 2: is doing, you're going to end up in a little
- 20:55Speaker 2: bit of a pickle. But you're never going to feel
- 20:57Speaker 2: good about yourself. You're never going to feel good about
- 20:59Speaker 2: your goals if you're comparing like for like, that sounds
- 21:03Speaker 2: pretty good to me.
- 21:03Speaker 5: After that we'll edit up grade.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Ah, let's go to a break because I think we
- 21:08Speaker 2: just need to cut me off here. Don't go too
- 21:10Speaker 2: far and we'll be definitely gravely drink because we're going
- 21:13Speaker 2: to be having a drink in the second half too. Hello,
- 21:22Speaker 2: my friends, we are back and I am so excited
- 21:26Speaker 2: for the Yes. Do you want to introduce who we're
- 21:30Speaker 2: going to be hanging out with for the remainder of
- 21:32Speaker 2: the evening?
- 21:33Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, yes, I feel like we're besties and
- 21:36Speaker 4: a little fun inside scoop is you might have actually
- 21:39Speaker 4: heard her on the podcast before without knowing, But tonight
- 21:41Speaker 4: we have the beautiful Sammy Rose, who is a registered counselor.
- 21:45Speaker 4: She's a way inclusive personal trainer and a body confidence
- 21:48Speaker 4: coach from Brisbane. Her main areas of specialty are in binge,
- 21:52Speaker 4: eating and body image issues, but she also provides general counseling,
- 21:56Speaker 4: helping her clients manage their stress, their anxiety, navigate life's hurdles,
- 22:01Speaker 4: aligning more with their values and living a life that
- 22:04Speaker 4: truly allows them to thrive.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Let's give a really warm welcome to Sammy Rose.
- 22:15Speaker 6: Hello, my love, Hi, I'm so excited I've done many podcasts,
- 22:19Speaker 6: but never whole stage things.
- 22:21Speaker 2: This is very got your fancy chair. I got kicked
- 22:23Speaker 2: off the fancy chair so she could have the fantasy chairs.
- 22:27Speaker 2: I tried to ask for it, but they kept saying no,
- 22:29Speaker 2: oh now I feel bad. No, that is fine. Thank
- 22:32Speaker 2: you so much for joining us for our live podcast recording.
- 22:35Speaker 2: I am so excited. I asked for permission to share
- 22:38Speaker 2: this backstage because in the very first season, has anybody
- 22:43Speaker 2: listened to the first season or real just newbies, We've
- 22:46Speaker 2: listened to the first season. So do we remember the
- 22:49Speaker 2: money diary about the influencer? Yeah, it was Sammy.
- 22:53Speaker 6: I was influencer thirty three.
- 22:56Speaker 2: It was such a good money diary. But you have
- 23:00Speaker 2: grown and changed and kicked all of these goals since then,
- 23:04Speaker 2: and we're not only going to ask about that, but
- 23:06Speaker 2: we're also going to ask about your job, your investing journey,
- 23:08Speaker 2: and each and every single thing in between that fits
- 23:11Speaker 2: within the half an hour allocated slot that I have
- 23:13Speaker 2: been given. We can talk about it after, but let's start.
- 23:18Speaker 2: I'm very excited to have you. As always, when we
- 23:20Speaker 2: have a guest on the show, we always ask them,
- 23:22Speaker 2: do you have a money win or confession you want
- 23:24Speaker 2: to share.
- 23:24Speaker 6: With us, I do, and I'm actually really excited to
- 23:27Speaker 6: tell you this one. So I have been hustling for
- 23:30Speaker 6: a really long time. I bought a house last year,
- 23:32Speaker 6: which is a money win in itself, but I've been
- 23:34Speaker 6: working really hard to get my little emergency fund up
- 23:37Speaker 6: and going because I've been wanting to invest.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Would we know the rules, You've got.
- 23:40Speaker 6: To get your emergency fund in a good place first.
- 23:43Speaker 6: And I literally hit my goal yesterday. Now yesterday, thanks,
- 23:49Speaker 6: So I'm stoked. So I'm like, what great timing for
- 23:52Speaker 6: the book because now I can get my together.
- 23:54Speaker 5: And I can actually invest.
- 23:56Speaker 2: That's so exciting yesterday and you saved that, literally share
- 24:00Speaker 2: on stage. I'm very excited. I feel like that deserves
- 24:03Speaker 2: another round of applause, because emergency funds are the best.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Now, Sami, we obviously just read out your very impressive bio,
- 24:13Speaker 4: but I wanted you to kind of take us all
- 24:14Speaker 4: through in your own words a little bit more about
- 24:17Speaker 4: what you do, because, like you said, you've changed and
- 24:19Speaker 4: grown so much since you were on the podcast, and
- 24:21Speaker 4: you've been doing some amazing things.
- 24:23Speaker 2: So tell us all about it.
- 24:25Speaker 5: Yeah, my business has changed a lot.
- 24:26Speaker 6: I've been a sole trader since twenty fifteen, so working
- 24:30Speaker 6: completely for myself, which is crazy to me. I never
- 24:33Speaker 6: even thought I would be a business owner, let alone
- 24:35Speaker 6: a successful one.
- 24:36Speaker 5: Kind of doing my own thing for so long.
- 24:38Speaker 6: But I started in personal training and online coaching, but
- 24:42Speaker 6: over the last few years, I've really changed away from
- 24:44Speaker 6: the whole like eight week challenges and all of those
- 24:47Speaker 6: things into I'm now a registered counselor. I'm focusing on
- 24:50Speaker 6: more body image, eating issues, all of those kinds of things.
- 24:53Speaker 6: So my niche has changed a lot, which means my
- 24:57Speaker 6: sort of reach in terms of clients has also changed.
- 25:00Speaker 6: But it's really grown into a business that I'm so
- 25:03Speaker 6: passionate about and I feel so fulfilled by. It's something
- 25:07Speaker 6: that is like such a personal passion to me as
- 25:09Speaker 6: well as like I just you know when you have
- 25:10Speaker 6: a job, like this is my job, Like I get
- 25:12Speaker 6: paid to do something that makes you feel, Yeah, we
- 25:16Speaker 6: get it.
- 25:17Speaker 5: It's wild. So it's such a blessing. So yeah, that's
- 25:19Speaker 5: what I do.
- 25:20Speaker 6: I kind of split my time between counseling and I
- 25:23Speaker 6: still do some health and fitness coaching, but from a
- 25:25Speaker 6: quite a different perspective.
- 25:26Speaker 5: I guess to what I used to do.
- 25:27Speaker 6: It's much more about kind of balance and enjoying things
- 25:30Speaker 6: and aligning with your values.
- 25:31Speaker 5: So yeah, that's kind of that's what I do. I
- 25:33Speaker 5: love it.
- 25:34Speaker 2: I want to change back the gears straight back to
- 25:37Speaker 2: money because I love it and I want to know.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Can you describe to us what your current relationship with
- 25:43Speaker 2: money looks like and maybe explain a little bit about
- 25:46Speaker 2: how that's changed over the last three years since you
- 25:50Speaker 2: were on our podcast.
- 25:51Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess my relationship with money is ever changing.
- 25:56Speaker 6: I am anxious by nature and by diagnosis, but for me,
- 26:01Speaker 6: I am someone who definitely I worry about the inconsistency
- 26:05Speaker 6: of running your own business in something that is not
- 26:07Speaker 6: the exact same income every single week. So I get
- 26:10Speaker 6: very worried. I have to make sure I have all
- 26:12Speaker 6: this nest eggs. So I've always been that way. I'm
- 26:14Speaker 6: the eldest of six kids as well, so I've been
- 26:17Speaker 6: raised in a home that was very thrifty, very careful
- 26:21Speaker 6: with things. You know, we had what we needed, but
- 26:23Speaker 6: we didn't always have a lot of money to spare.
- 26:25Speaker 6: So I think I still live my life in that
- 26:27Speaker 6: way a lot of the time as well. So, yeah,
- 26:29Speaker 6: running my own business is sometimes a little challenging from
- 26:32Speaker 6: that mindset perspective of feeling stable. But I do have
- 26:36Speaker 6: my income kind of split across a few different income
- 26:39Speaker 6: streams now, which is really nice. So I have one
- 26:41Speaker 6: side of my business one hat that I wear as
- 26:43Speaker 6: my counseling hat. I have some coaching clients as well,
- 26:46Speaker 6: so they're kind of fifty to fifty in terms of
- 26:49Speaker 6: the main income for me in how I split my time.
- 26:51Speaker 5: But I also have some passive income.
- 26:54Speaker 6: I have some ebooks and things through my website, do
- 26:56Speaker 6: a little bit of influencing work, but not a lot
- 26:59Speaker 6: of paid influencing work because I would rather advertise.
- 27:01Speaker 5: My own business and make more money that way.
- 27:04Speaker 6: But yeah, it's kind of nice to have a few
- 27:06Speaker 6: different little streams for me.
- 27:07Speaker 5: That just helps keep things moving forward.
- 27:09Speaker 2: I guess, how did you start with different income streams?
- 27:13Speaker 2: I feel like so many of us just have one
- 27:16Speaker 2: and then we're like two, where's two gonna come from?
- 27:19Speaker 2: And You're like, I just have so many different income streams,
- 27:21Speaker 2: Like that's not relatable content. How do we do that?
- 27:24Speaker 6: I feel like I'm one of those you know, those
- 27:25Speaker 6: jugglers on a unicycle that's like also juggling plates.
- 27:29Speaker 5: That's me at all times.
- 27:31Speaker 6: But I guess, yeah, I started with the one I
- 27:33Speaker 6: was doing the health and fitness coaching. Then I branched
- 27:35Speaker 6: out service wise, so they're still technically under the same business.
- 27:38Speaker 5: I just kind of have two different sets of clients,
- 27:41Speaker 5: I guess throughout the week.
- 27:42Speaker 6: But yeah, the passive income was something that was just
- 27:46Speaker 6: I was just following the demand I was growing in
- 27:48Speaker 6: terms of social media. I was having a lot more
- 27:50Speaker 6: client inquiries than what I could physically keep up with,
- 27:53Speaker 6: and I wanted to be able to help people and
- 27:56Speaker 6: I couldn't do all of that work one on one,
- 27:58Speaker 6: So I guess it was a a great problem to have,
- 28:01Speaker 6: and that I just wanted to find a way to
- 28:03Speaker 6: help more people and put great content out there and
- 28:06Speaker 6: really help the people that couldn't access me, either that
- 28:08Speaker 6: I didn't have the time or they didn't have the
- 28:10Speaker 6: money to invest in one and one with me. So yeah,
- 28:13Speaker 6: that just kind of naturally happened. I feel like that's
- 28:15Speaker 6: kind of my life story a lot of the time
- 28:16Speaker 6: that I just I work behind the scenes and then
- 28:19Speaker 6: good things happened to fall in my lap, and it's
- 28:21Speaker 6: such a blessing and it's such a privilege to have that,
- 28:23Speaker 6: but I don't want to give it all to a
- 28:25Speaker 6: lot because I do work my butt off for it.
- 28:27Speaker 4: How do you find navigating the health and wellness space,
- 28:31Speaker 4: because that's a space I think historically that has been
- 28:35Speaker 4: a little bit challenging and a little bit capitalized on
- 28:39Speaker 4: almost at times in a way that is maybe not
- 28:42Speaker 4: putting people first. And you know, when we were talking earlier,
- 28:45Speaker 4: you're so passionate about people and about them being looked
- 28:49Speaker 4: after and about them being provided the right tools and
- 28:52Speaker 4: the right resources, which isn't necessarily, unfortunately always the case
- 28:56Speaker 4: in that industry. What does that look like for you
- 28:59Speaker 4: in terms of, you know, navigating I guess that responsibility
- 29:03Speaker 4: that's on you alongside your own personal passion for people.
- 29:07Speaker 6: That is a great question, and that's really why I've
- 29:10Speaker 6: changed my business so much over the last few years.
- 29:12Speaker 6: Like I said, I really started out doing the whole
- 29:14Speaker 6: like eight week challenges, a lot of fat loss stuff,
- 29:17Speaker 6: and it was very, very profitable for a good period
- 29:21Speaker 6: of my business that I was making a lot of money,
- 29:24Speaker 6: and that was what I was personally into as well
- 29:26Speaker 6: at the time. But I've kind of been on my
- 29:29Speaker 6: own journey over the last few years and kind of
- 29:31Speaker 6: found my own balance and sustainable approach and really incorporated
- 29:36Speaker 6: a lot more mental health into the work that I do.
- 29:38Speaker 6: Obviously now that I've got my counseling skills as well,
- 29:42Speaker 6: so I can see where there were kind of things
- 29:45Speaker 6: that I was doing previously that I didn't really know
- 29:48Speaker 6: necessarily were problematic at the time, but that are things
- 29:51Speaker 6: that I just don't feel aligned with who I am
- 29:53Speaker 6: and kind of how I want to influence people now.
- 29:56Speaker 6: So I've really kind of redirected my business into making
- 29:59Speaker 6: sure that I'm focusing on a whole person approach and
- 30:02Speaker 6: what are people's values and what are the other things
- 30:04Speaker 6: in their life that are really important that maybe previously
- 30:08Speaker 6: they were, you know, foregoing things like going out for
- 30:10Speaker 6: dinner with friends and having a social life and all
- 30:12Speaker 6: of those things in order to chase their goals as
- 30:15Speaker 6: quickly as possible. And now it's really about, well, what
- 30:18Speaker 6: is important to you and can we find a way
- 30:20Speaker 6: to kind of juggle all of that and not just
- 30:22Speaker 6: achieve your health and fitness goals or your mindset goals
- 30:24Speaker 6: or whatever it is, but also enjoy the process and
- 30:27Speaker 6: enjoy life while you're doing that.
- 30:29Speaker 4: Yeah, amazing. Back to money, because I can see raring
- 30:32Speaker 4: to talk about investing.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Oh, we want to know more about that.
- 30:36Speaker 4: You hinted this before, but do you currently invest and
- 30:39Speaker 4: if so, how are you doing that?
- 30:41Speaker 6: I don't yet, but now I'm in a good place
- 30:44Speaker 6: where yesterday of yesterday. So I'm like cheering on the
- 30:48Speaker 6: inside because this book is like perfect timing. I'm sure
- 30:50Speaker 6: you guys are feeling the same. I'm not a huge
- 30:53Speaker 6: risk taker, so I've always been really nervous and I
- 30:55Speaker 6: was like, I just need this nest egg, I just
- 30:57Speaker 6: need this emergency fund and then I can stop and breathe.
- 31:00Speaker 6: And now I think I'll probably start with like, you know,
- 31:04Speaker 6: micro investing, maybe a little app or something just to
- 31:06Speaker 6: you know, the little round up of my coffee, just
- 31:09Speaker 6: to dip my toe in the water. But it's one
- 31:11Speaker 6: of those things that I think, like, I'm sure a
- 31:12Speaker 6: lot of you guys feel the same of it. It's
- 31:14Speaker 6: just really foreign a lot of the time, and the
- 31:17Speaker 6: overwhelming information can feel like a lot. But I think
- 31:20Speaker 6: when you start small and just kind of get comfortable
- 31:22Speaker 6: and work your way up, that tends to be the
- 31:24Speaker 6: easiest way to get into literally any kind of goal.
- 31:27Speaker 6: So at least you know I can keep following along
- 31:29Speaker 6: with your tips and hopefully get in there very soon.
- 31:31Speaker 2: I feel like you've been really good at following our tips,
- 31:34Speaker 2: Like since the last time we literally spoke on the pod.
- 31:36Speaker 2: You're like, so, yeah, I bought a house and I
- 31:38Speaker 2: have an emergency fund and I've done all this stuff,
- 31:40Speaker 2: and like that's eppy.
- 31:41Speaker 5: I told you I'm an O two follower for you.
- 31:44Speaker 2: I know, because like I literally was like, will you
- 31:46Speaker 2: be on the fifth episode of my podcast and we
- 31:48Speaker 2: don't even know if this is going to be any good,
- 31:50Speaker 2: but please be on it? And you were like, yes, Queen,
- 31:52Speaker 2: I love it, But I want to ask more about
- 31:55Speaker 2: I guess the investing side of things, and you know
- 31:58Speaker 2: your comfort levels, cause you've obviously got a best friend
- 32:01Speaker 2: who's a financial advisor and you're just going to start
- 32:03Speaker 2: with my care investing. But that's a whole other thing.
- 32:05Speaker 2: But you're in this circumstance where like, I want to
- 32:08Speaker 2: start investing, but it still feels overwhelming, Like where do
- 32:11Speaker 2: you think you're actually going to start? Like is there
- 32:14Speaker 2: a monetary value that you're like, Oh, I'm just going
- 32:16Speaker 2: to do a couple of dollars a week, or are
- 32:18Speaker 2: you going to pick a platform and dump some cash
- 32:20Speaker 2: on it? Like, have you thought about strategy when it
- 32:23Speaker 2: comes to investing.
- 32:25Speaker 6: I haven't thought about it a lot, because literally it's
- 32:28Speaker 6: been one day, give me.
- 32:29Speaker 2: A minute, it's all I think about.
- 32:32Speaker 6: I have been thinking about it, though, and I think
- 32:34Speaker 6: I probably want to kind of set myself a number goal,
- 32:37Speaker 6: maybe like a five hundred and two one thousand dollars,
- 32:39Speaker 6: because I feel like if something went wrong, that's a
- 32:42Speaker 6: money amount that I think I could afford to lose
- 32:45Speaker 6: and not die.
- 32:47Speaker 5: But you know, that's.
- 32:48Speaker 6: Probably the most that i'd probably want to jump into
- 32:51Speaker 6: straight away. So yeah, I'm not one hundred percent sure
- 32:54Speaker 6: if I want to do.
- 32:55Speaker 5: What's that bucket? Thing in the bucket?
- 32:57Speaker 6: Yes, I always bus I've been listening, I've been picking
- 33:02Speaker 6: things up along the way, but I haven't locked anything
- 33:04Speaker 6: in yet. So I think I just want to kind
- 33:06Speaker 6: of get a feel for things. Like where I get lost.
- 33:08Speaker 5: Is just how do you know what's good? You know?
- 33:10Speaker 6: How do you know what you actually choose when it
- 33:12Speaker 6: is something that you're making that choice. That's what overwhelms me,
- 33:15Speaker 6: And I'm like, what if I pick wrong anxiety.
- 33:18Speaker 5: You know, I have to really have a think about it, and.
- 33:20Speaker 6: There's so many what ifs in my head, so I think, yeah,
- 33:23Speaker 6: I just say it's a little bit, a little bit
- 33:25Speaker 6: more learning, a little bit more reading the book.
- 33:26Speaker 5: I feel like you'll tell me in the book.
- 33:28Speaker 2: I actually have a couple of book recommendations if you'd
- 33:30Speaker 2: like to.
- 33:31Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think you might help.
- 33:32Speaker 2: I can help. I want to know. So you said
- 33:34Speaker 2: that you haven't started. Have you invested historically? I feel
- 33:37Speaker 2: like you've invested in business. You've invested in a number
- 33:40Speaker 2: of things, so I want to know about that history. Yeah.
- 33:43Speaker 6: I invest in myself definitely in my business, and I
- 33:46Speaker 6: try and make sure that I am putting money aside
- 33:49Speaker 6: to like reinvest in my business in terms of planning
- 33:52Speaker 6: for future growth.
- 33:53Speaker 5: So that's really important.
- 33:54Speaker 6: I do have my super fund that you know, I
- 33:56Speaker 6: put a little bit into to make sure that that's
- 33:58Speaker 6: kind of growing in the background. But really, like the
- 34:00Speaker 6: last few years have been so focused on buy my house,
- 34:03Speaker 6: and I figure that's a pretty good investment and hopefully
- 34:06Speaker 6: that's going to make me some money in the long run.
- 34:08Speaker 6: Because I'm putting my own little tweaks on things. I
- 34:11Speaker 6: don't know if you guys have seen, I'm doing lots
- 34:12Speaker 6: of I'm a big like DIY make things look really
- 34:15Speaker 6: cute in my own house and not pay people to
- 34:18Speaker 6: do it. So I'm doing a lot of my own
- 34:20Speaker 6: little kind of esthetic renovations. Don't like I'm not knocking
- 34:23Speaker 6: out walls or anything like that.
- 34:24Speaker 5: Don't worry.
- 34:25Speaker 2: I'm very aesthetic. I was about to I just I
- 34:27Speaker 2: don't know if you guys saw me like shoot around
- 34:29Speaker 2: to jests and I was like, can we this is nice?
- 34:33Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 34:34Speaker 4: I love anyone who listens to I love a good
- 34:36Speaker 4: DIY the DIY space. What kind of projects have you tackled,
- 34:40Speaker 4: because I feel like, as we've kind of spoken about,
- 34:43Speaker 4: buying house is very expensive and something that a lot
- 34:44Speaker 4: of us want to do Getting projects done by yourself
- 34:48Speaker 4: labor makes up such a significant part of the cost
- 34:52Speaker 4: of changing a home or of renovating. If you can
- 34:55Speaker 4: do things yourself, that's a really great place to save money.
- 34:57Speaker 4: What kind of projects have you done and do you
- 34:59Speaker 4: have like a ball park on like, how much cash
- 35:01Speaker 4: you've kind of saved by doing that.
- 35:04Speaker 6: My biggest project that I've done so far is my
- 35:06Speaker 6: pool area, have a pool.
- 35:08Speaker 5: It feels very fancy.
- 35:10Speaker 6: This is a lot cheaper here compared to like Melbourne listeners,
- 35:13Speaker 6: if you listen to the podcast, it's not the same.
- 35:16Speaker 2: But his second she said at the back, she was like, yeah,
- 35:19Speaker 2: and the house has a pool. Do you want to
- 35:20Speaker 2: see my pool area? I was like, this is not relatable, babe,
- 35:23Speaker 2: like that that's a pool. She's like, oh, here's how
- 35:26Speaker 2: much I paid And I was like, what, Just do
- 35:28Speaker 2: you want to move to Korean's last? Like I could
- 35:31Speaker 2: afford I could afford way bigger house. Like at the moment,
- 35:35Speaker 2: the house I've bought is in a good area, but
- 35:38Speaker 2: when I have kids, they're definitely getting like a triple
- 35:40Speaker 2: stacker bunk bed, Like that's where you're at, and I'm
- 35:42Speaker 2: just not willing to compromise.
- 35:44Speaker 6: You'll have to move them up here at some point.
- 35:45Speaker 6: It's much more after.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Weather better, everything better, more exciting. People like what.
- 35:51Speaker 5: You're not wrong?
- 35:53Speaker 6: Yeah, So that's been my most recent project. Is Like
- 35:56Speaker 6: it was just like concrete, right, just pretty boring, Like
- 35:59Speaker 6: I'm still cute, but it was just like playing concrete
- 36:01Speaker 6: and it kept getting really dirty from like the rain
- 36:03Speaker 6: was getting ingrained in the concrete.
- 36:05Speaker 5: It was really irked me and I was like, oh,
- 36:07Speaker 5: I really want to get it tiled.
- 36:08Speaker 6: But that's so expensive and like you have to pay
- 36:11Speaker 6: so I don't know how to do that, Like that's
- 36:13Speaker 6: that's a whole thing you do though, Well, so idea,
- 36:17Speaker 6: I wired it and I got concrete paint and I
- 36:19Speaker 6: got this like stencil thing and so it's like it
- 36:22Speaker 6: looks tiled now from afar, but I actually have painted
- 36:25Speaker 6: it on in this really durable concrete paint. I put
- 36:28Speaker 6: this little like cinderblock stack that I have like cactuses.
- 36:31Speaker 5: In now and it is a whole vibe.
- 36:32Speaker 6: And the whole thing cost me maybe six hundred dollars
- 36:35Speaker 6: all up for everything, but it was so fun as
- 36:38Speaker 6: well to do it myself, to spend that time.
- 36:40Speaker 5: It's not perfect.
- 36:41Speaker 6: It's one of those like money situations if you look
- 36:43Speaker 6: too close, like the lines of the sensel are not perfect,
- 36:46Speaker 6: but it is like I'm so obsessed with it, so
- 36:49Speaker 6: little things like that cosmetic. Don't give me a power
- 36:51Speaker 6: tool that I'll pay someone to do. But if it's cute,
- 36:54Speaker 6: if it's pained, if it's just cosmetic, I like to.
- 36:56Speaker 5: Do it myself.
- 36:57Speaker 2: See that's where you and jes A Griki are very different.
- 37:00Speaker 2: She will take a power tool, she will do it.
- 37:02Speaker 4: Sometimes I shouldn't have access to the power tool, but
- 37:06Speaker 4: I'll give it a crack anyway.
- 37:07Speaker 2: It's wild. Sometimes I'll say in the office like, oh
- 37:09Speaker 2: my gosh, imagine if we had and Just is like
- 37:11Speaker 2: I could do it. And I'm like, babe, you don't
- 37:13Speaker 2: have a drop sawce. She's like I do though, Like
- 37:15Speaker 2: I do that. I'm like, where do you keep this stuff?
- 37:18Speaker 2: She's like, I'll just go home and I'll cut it up.
- 37:20Speaker 2: I'm like hell. Like she's honestly terrifying. We've been talking
- 37:24Speaker 2: wedding content in the office and I'm like, oh, I'd
- 37:27Speaker 2: really like this particular you know, you know how like
- 37:30Speaker 2: brides and like I'm going to be one. So this
- 37:32Speaker 2: sounds really hypocritical. Have those aesthetic pajamas when they like
- 37:35Speaker 2: get ready in the morning, right, they're really expensive, just
- 37:39Speaker 2: like I could make them. Like what, I'm like, Oh,
- 37:42Speaker 2: I really want this particular like style. I don't think
- 37:44Speaker 2: it exists. Just like I'll do it, like I'll get
- 37:47Speaker 2: it done. I'm like, what is this? I'm gonna let
- 37:49Speaker 2: you do it. Because weddings are really expensive, so that
- 37:52Speaker 2: can be my wedding present, just as diy labor. I
- 37:55Speaker 2: love it.
- 37:55Speaker 5: I love that though.
- 37:56Speaker 6: I think it's so satisfying to do things yourself to
- 37:59Speaker 6: take I think that's why thing that I got from
- 38:01Speaker 6: my mom. She was very very savvy. You have to
- 38:03Speaker 6: be when you have six kids, right, Like, I don't
- 38:06Speaker 6: even know how.
- 38:06Speaker 5: She pulled that off. She is like a superwoman.
- 38:09Speaker 6: But we always had, you know, at least the basics
- 38:11Speaker 6: of what we needed, and we did dancing, and we
- 38:13Speaker 6: had costumes, and you would teach us how to seq
- 38:15Speaker 6: on our own costumes, and so from the get go,
- 38:18Speaker 6: I've just I've learnt those skills over time of the
- 38:21Speaker 6: things that we can do ourselves that we're not gonna
- 38:25Speaker 6: kill anything, like obviously, like I'm not gonna do anything
- 38:29Speaker 6: really important myself that I really don't know how to do,
- 38:31Speaker 6: but to borrow her drop saw.
- 38:33Speaker 5: You can come and help me. If I ever need
- 38:35Speaker 5: a wall knock out, I know who to call.
- 38:37Speaker 6: But I just I think there's such like pleasure and
- 38:40Speaker 6: joy and like pride that comes from like creating a project,
- 38:44Speaker 6: being able to do it yourself, even if it's not perfect.
- 38:47Speaker 6: Like I look at my little pool area, and I'm
- 38:48Speaker 6: like a proud that I even have a home to
- 38:50Speaker 6: begin with. B I have a pool, Like that is
- 38:53Speaker 6: freaking sick, But like the fact that I did that
- 38:56Speaker 6: myself just feels like such a beautiful personal touch. It's
- 38:59Speaker 6: like I look at it and I'm like, I see
- 39:00Speaker 6: that labor of love. And it took me probably like
- 39:03Speaker 6: twenty to twenty five hours all up, over the course
- 39:06Speaker 6: of a couple of like month's worth of weekends. But
- 39:08Speaker 6: it just feels so good to know that I did
- 39:10Speaker 6: that myself, that I saved that money, but also like.
- 39:13Speaker 5: It was just really fun.
- 39:14Speaker 2: That makes it like absolutely okay that you're like it's
- 39:17Speaker 2: not perfect because it's mine and I love it. And
- 39:20Speaker 2: you know what you can do. You can just hand
- 39:21Speaker 2: all of the guests that come to your house to
- 39:23Speaker 2: use the pool a glass of champagne before they go
- 39:25Speaker 2: up there. Not they will not see it, honestly, it
- 39:28Speaker 2: will be fine. Plus, I'm setting myself up for success here.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Next time I go to Sammy's house, I'm going to
- 39:33Speaker 2: get a champagne. This is genius. This is genius. You
- 39:37Speaker 2: talk a lot about investing in yourself in the content
- 39:41Speaker 2: that you create, which I obviously adore, and I think
- 39:44Speaker 2: you've done a lot of especially in recent years. I
- 39:47Speaker 2: feel like watching you online, you've morphed into this person
- 39:50Speaker 2: that I'm just like. I always proud of her before,
- 39:53Speaker 2: but I now just want to be around you all
- 39:56Speaker 2: the time. Can you give us some tips, like we
- 39:59Speaker 2: want to be more, Like how do we invest more
- 40:02Speaker 2: in ourselves in a way that you know doesn't cost
- 40:05Speaker 2: thousands of dollars? Because I was talking in Melbourne about
- 40:08Speaker 2: pilates and how much I want to do more of it,
- 40:11Speaker 2: but I just can't justify how much it costs. And
- 40:14Speaker 2: I feel like sometimes influencers turn around me, like, so
- 40:17Speaker 2: the best way to invest in yourself is to do
- 40:20Speaker 2: a sixty dollars polarates class and then get a twelve
- 40:24Speaker 2: dollar green smoothie. Like it's just it's not a vibe.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Like it's just not a vibe. Like, as I said before,
- 40:30Speaker 2: I'm gonna put a free app on my phone and
- 40:32Speaker 2: have a nap, Like that's my vibe? What are you doing?
- 40:36Speaker 2: I do pilates, but straight under the bus.
- 40:43Speaker 6: I am an influencer. It is a collaboration, so I
- 40:45Speaker 6: don't pay for it.
- 40:47Speaker 2: That's a money win you should have said that. You
- 40:49Speaker 2: should have said at the start saving my emergency fund
- 40:52Speaker 2: free pilarates. Also, why haven't you hooked me up?
- 40:56Speaker 5: That is a blessing that is not big enough Gus.
- 40:58Speaker 6: It's one of my few collaborations that I take, and like,
- 41:01Speaker 6: I will accept that one because that's.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Like, you don't even have to pay me, just keep
- 41:04Speaker 2: giving me free style.
- 41:05Speaker 5: Sign me up.
- 41:06Speaker 6: No, I think like when it comes to investing in yourself, honestly,
- 41:08Speaker 6: it really is the same as when you're investing money.
- 41:11Speaker 6: It's when you think about people that are trying to
- 41:14Speaker 6: like go all out with their savings and I'm not
- 41:16Speaker 6: gonna buy any clothes and I'm not going to dinner
- 41:19Speaker 6: for the next six months so I can save as
- 41:21Speaker 6: much as possible, And it's like, yeah, cool, but how
- 41:23Speaker 6: long can you really do that for? And what do
- 41:25Speaker 6: you have to sacrifice in order to do that? Are
- 41:28Speaker 6: you going to be miserable in the process? And if
- 41:30Speaker 6: you're trying to save money in order to have a
- 41:32Speaker 6: comfortable life and be happy, well, like, why do you
- 41:34Speaker 6: want to make yourself miserable for six plus months trying
- 41:37Speaker 6: to do that and not have any kind of joy
- 41:40Speaker 6: in life? So you know, flip it, make it really small,
- 41:43Speaker 6: do it like it's micro investing.
- 41:45Speaker 5: Do it like it's a little round up.
- 41:47Speaker 6: Your coffee, and just what are some small things that
- 41:49Speaker 6: I can do that will help me look after my health,
- 41:52Speaker 6: my wellbeing, my mindset, whatever it might be that you're
- 41:55Speaker 6: trying to work towards.
- 41:56Speaker 5: But don't try to go zero to.
- 41:58Speaker 6: One hundred and change everything all at wae. Think about
- 42:01Speaker 6: what am I doing and what can I just do
- 42:03Speaker 6: ten percent better this week? Is it that I just
- 42:05Speaker 6: set a little water goal, or if I don't have
- 42:07Speaker 6: time to go to the gym five times a week,
- 42:09Speaker 6: like what is realistic for me and the budget.
- 42:12Speaker 5: Of my time that I have.
- 42:14Speaker 6: Is it better that I plan to do just you know,
- 42:16Speaker 6: two or three twenty minute workouts and be happy with
- 42:19Speaker 6: that because that's still going to get me a lot
- 42:21Speaker 6: further along. It's like saying, oh, sorry, I'm not going
- 42:23Speaker 6: to put aside ten dollars a week because that's not enough.
- 42:25Speaker 6: But that's ten dollars a week that you didn't have before.
- 42:28Speaker 6: So it's the exact same thing with your time. Figure
- 42:30Speaker 6: out what you actually have to give, what's realistic for
- 42:33Speaker 6: you to do consistently without like throwing your entire life
- 42:38Speaker 6: away in order to do it. Small sacrifices are worth it,
- 42:41Speaker 6: but big sacrifices that make you hate life.
- 42:43Speaker 5: I know about you, guys, but I don't sign myself
- 42:46Speaker 5: up for that.
- 42:47Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 42:48Speaker 4: I want to talk about the free Parlartis for a second,
- 42:50Speaker 4: because the second you said that, I could feel a
- 42:53Speaker 4: few people in the room go. And I think it's
- 42:56Speaker 4: a really interesting thing because you.
- 42:58Speaker 2: I also want free Polartis.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Not even because that you guys heard us before do
- 43:02Speaker 4: our budget direct money wins. You know that we will
- 43:05Speaker 4: work with sponsors occasionally who really align to our values
- 43:08Speaker 4: and brands that we really love.
- 43:10Speaker 2: And I want to get your thoughts.
- 43:12Speaker 4: As someone who does work in the influencing space, I
- 43:15Speaker 4: feel like there is sometimes a really big stigma around
- 43:20Speaker 4: sponsorship and around partnerships, and I think it's interesting because
- 43:24Speaker 4: it seems like for people who work in the advertising
- 43:27Speaker 4: world or people who've worked in marketing. I don't know
- 43:29Speaker 4: if anyone here has ever worked in that space before,
- 43:31Speaker 4: but I feel like sometimes we view it in a
- 43:34Speaker 4: different way to the everyday person. And I can totally
- 43:37Speaker 4: see how when you have somebody who's promoting something different
- 43:41Speaker 4: every day, or promoting conflicting things, or you know, doing
- 43:45Speaker 4: things all the time and shoving it in your face.
- 43:47Speaker 4: I can understand eye as a consumer find that frustrating
- 43:51Speaker 4: as well, but I feel like it's an interesting conversation
- 43:54Speaker 4: to have around, you know, the internalized I don't want
- 43:59Speaker 4: to say misogyny, it's not the right word, but the
- 44:01Speaker 4: internalized perception, perception exactly of women working hard and getting
- 44:07Speaker 4: that back. Basically, because if you're working with a brand
- 44:11Speaker 4: you just said you love parties and it's so good
- 44:13Speaker 4: for your mental health and it's something you're really passionate about,
- 44:16Speaker 4: why shouldn't you be working with them and producing great
- 44:19Speaker 4: content Because it takes a lot of time to do that. Like,
- 44:22Speaker 4: do you feel like there's a little bit of a
- 44:24Speaker 4: barrier or a misunderstanding sometimes around that kind of work.
- 44:28Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely.
- 44:29Speaker 6: I never introduce myself as an influencer. I don't really
- 44:32Speaker 6: consider myself one anyway, because that's like the tiniest fraction
- 44:36Speaker 6: of what I do when I'm majority of what I'm
- 44:38Speaker 6: on social media for is to advertise my business.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Influence me so much, you're an influencer by thanks?
- 44:43Speaker 5: Okay, Right, I'll take it.
- 44:45Speaker 6: But you know, I'm very picky with my collaborations because I,
- 44:49Speaker 6: like I said before, I want to spend my time
- 44:51Speaker 6: on social media talking about my business and generate, you know,
- 44:55Speaker 6: leads that will help me actually profit more than just
- 44:57Speaker 6: kind of lining someone else's pockets. And I'm not someone that,
- 45:00Speaker 6: like I just want to kind of sell anything to
- 45:02Speaker 6: anyone and not be authentic. So I'm like, I know
- 45:05Speaker 6: everyone says, oh, I only advertise things I know in love,
- 45:08Speaker 6: but I really do, Like, I'm very very picky. I
- 45:12Speaker 6: have only a small handful of like ongoing partnerships, and
- 45:16Speaker 6: when I have kind of once off collapse and things
- 45:18Speaker 6: like that, it's would I actually pay for this? And
- 45:21Speaker 6: like will I show up and do this thing or
- 45:24Speaker 6: use this product or whatever it is? And if the
- 45:25Speaker 6: answer is yes, then I'll consider it. But like the
- 45:29Speaker 6: amount of things that I say no to are like
- 45:32Speaker 6: twenty times the amount of things that I say yes too,
- 45:34Speaker 6: purely because a I don't want to spend the time
- 45:36Speaker 6: advertising other things, Like I'm not so broke that I
- 45:40Speaker 6: couldn't pay for things myself. If someone offers me, like
- 45:42Speaker 6: I don't know, some something that I don't care about
- 45:45Speaker 6: I'm like, I can pay for it myself if I
- 45:47Speaker 6: really wanted it that badly. So you know, Polarates kind
- 45:50Speaker 6: of fell into my lap. I was like, you know what,
- 45:52Speaker 6: I actually really want to do pilates. Yeah, it's really costly.
- 45:55Speaker 6: I have to actually show up and do the classes.
- 45:58Speaker 6: It's not a paid collaboration. It's like a gifted ten
- 46:00Speaker 6: pac or something. So I have to actually show up
- 46:03Speaker 6: and use the passes in order to make this mutually beneficial.
- 46:07Speaker 6: So if I'm not going to use it and I'm
- 46:08Speaker 6: not going to enjoy it, then it wouldn't be worth
- 46:10Speaker 6: it anyway. So those are the kind of partnerships that
- 46:13Speaker 6: I take on, and I, like I said, I'm really
- 46:15Speaker 6: choosy with it because I have built this really wonderful
- 46:20Speaker 6: community with my following. They do trust me, and I
- 46:23Speaker 6: do have such a great back and forth with so
- 46:26Speaker 6: many people that follow me, and I answer every single
- 46:28Speaker 6: DM that's in my inbox. And I don't want to
- 46:31Speaker 6: just be spooking things that I actually don't care about
- 46:34Speaker 6: because that just doesn't feel good to me. So I
- 46:37Speaker 6: only talk about things that I really love. And I've
- 46:39Speaker 6: always been that way. There's probably been things here and
- 46:41Speaker 6: there that In hindsight, I'm like, eh, probably could have
- 46:44Speaker 6: gone without doing that. But the last few years in particular,
- 46:47Speaker 6: I've really cut back. And if you see anything that
- 46:50Speaker 6: is like gifted, collaboration, paid sponsorship, anything like that on
- 46:53Speaker 6: my socials, it's because I would like scream from the
- 46:57Speaker 6: rooftop how much I love that brand or that they
- 46:59Speaker 6: align with my value or whatever it is.
- 47:01Speaker 2: I'm very very similar. I get the ick when I
- 47:04Speaker 2: see content that I'm like, you don't use that. I
- 47:07Speaker 2: recently just did a collaboration. This is so sick, right
- 47:10Speaker 2: with bumble, But I was like, yes, because I love
- 47:14Speaker 2: dating apps. I think this is sick. I think healthy
- 47:16Speaker 2: relationship conversations should be had. Let's talk about money and
- 47:20Speaker 2: dating like this makes sense to me. But the amount
- 47:23Speaker 2: of people that approach you and you're like, what, how
- 47:26Speaker 2: did you even get my profile? This makes no sense
- 47:29Speaker 2: for either of us. It gives me the ick, but
- 47:32Speaker 2: I think it's I think it's important to support it
- 47:35Speaker 2: as well, because you know, you hear us doing our
- 47:37Speaker 2: budget direct money wins and confessions, and at the end
- 47:40Speaker 2: of the day, that's what's paying to get my team
- 47:42Speaker 2: to you guys. That's what's putting the content on board,
- 47:46Speaker 2: Like we're not, you know, as she's on the money,
- 47:48Speaker 2: and I'm sure you're exactly the same. Like that's the
- 47:50Speaker 2: content that is keeping my entire team employed, not just employed,
- 47:55Speaker 2: but employed at wages that I'm really proud of as
- 47:58Speaker 2: a small business. And I get to look after them
- 48:02Speaker 2: and enjoy their company, but also they get to invest
- 48:05Speaker 2: in my business, Like this is so much bigger than
- 48:08Speaker 2: what I think people think it is. And do you
- 48:10Speaker 2: know what's most disappointing complete sidetrack is like you do
- 48:13Speaker 2: this content and I'll post like a picture of my
- 48:15Speaker 2: dog and it gets fifty billion likes, and then I
- 48:18Speaker 2: like post my sponsored content and like I get one like,
- 48:21Speaker 2: and I'm like, please just support my stuff, Like that's
- 48:25Speaker 2: what's paying for the dog goss.
- 48:29Speaker 6: No, You're so right, though, And I think the one
- 48:31Speaker 6: thing that makes me feel okay with doing any kind
- 48:33Speaker 6: of collaborations is that I give so much free content.
- 48:37Speaker 6: I do Instagram captions and I do stories all the time,
- 48:41Speaker 6: and I do tiktoks that take a really long time
- 48:44Speaker 6: to film, and I have a newsletter and a blog
- 48:46Speaker 6: and I have all this stuff that I give for
- 48:47Speaker 6: free and that takes time, and that takes time away
- 48:51Speaker 6: from where I could be spending that one on one
- 48:53Speaker 6: time with clients that would be paying me money. So
- 48:56Speaker 6: that's kind of how I guess like I've made peace
- 48:58Speaker 6: with that if I do you know, a collobs option
- 49:00Speaker 6: or a paid partnership here and there, that really helps
- 49:03Speaker 6: me kind of transactionally justify the time that I'm putting
- 49:06Speaker 6: into social media, which yes, helps me with lead generation anyway.
- 49:10Speaker 6: But I would probably say I do maybe eight to
- 49:13Speaker 6: ten hours a week at least specifically on social media stuff.
- 49:16Speaker 5: So doing my you know.
- 49:18Speaker 6: Infographics in canber, posting, drafting captions, replying to every single DM,
- 49:23Speaker 6: doing stories all of the time.
- 49:25Speaker 5: It's a lot of time.
- 49:26Speaker 6: And that's I'm not even an actual influencer in terms
- 49:30Speaker 6: of like that's my you know, business or a valid
- 49:33Speaker 6: in pome stream the people that do this full time,
- 49:36Speaker 6: like it's not as easy as like, look, there's a
- 49:40Speaker 6: whole thing going on at the moment.
- 49:41Speaker 5: I don't know if you guys have seen.
- 49:43Speaker 2: You're gonna getting canceled. It's gonna take a snippet from this.
- 49:46Speaker 2: Do you know how hard it is to be?
- 49:48Speaker 6: There are so far harder jobs absolutely, But I think
- 49:52Speaker 6: people have this impression that you know, influencing or being
- 49:55Speaker 6: a content creator is like easy, and it's just you
- 49:58Speaker 6: just get given all this stuff and you have to
- 49:59Speaker 6: take a quick photo like there actually.
- 50:01Speaker 5: Is a lot more time behind it.
- 50:03Speaker 6: Especially you know in accounts like ours where we are
- 50:06Speaker 6: very community based, it's not just post the photo and
- 50:09Speaker 6: leave and someone does it for you.
- 50:10Speaker 5: It's you have to create that trust.
- 50:12Speaker 6: You have to have those conversations, you do have to
- 50:14Speaker 6: reply to all of the dms, you have to be
- 50:16Speaker 6: thoughtful about your captions, and you know, for me, like
- 50:20Speaker 6: this is a way that I can reach a broader
- 50:21Speaker 6: amount of people and genuinely make a difference. And that
- 50:24Speaker 6: makes me feel really good and really proud that I
- 50:26Speaker 6: have a platform that people care what I have to say.
- 50:30Speaker 6: Like that just blows my mind that I wake up
- 50:31Speaker 6: and I post thissally little Instagram caption and like people
- 50:35Speaker 6: tell me like, oh wow, that's like blown my mind
- 50:37Speaker 6: or my life is better because of this one thing
- 50:39Speaker 6: that you said, and that like gets me so emotional.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Sometimes I find it's so interesting because if you go
- 50:45Speaker 2: back like five or six years, obviously I did not
- 50:48Speaker 2: have any kind of profile and nobody would have paid
- 50:50Speaker 2: me to make content like no chance, Like my old Instagram,
- 50:54Speaker 2: there's a reason it's blocked and deleted like it was.
- 50:56Speaker 2: It was embarrassing. I was using those like in built
- 50:58Speaker 2: filters and stuff just one out of ten will not recommend.
- 51:01Speaker 2: I was also using like smiley faces and being like
- 51:04Speaker 2: hanging out with the gals like ill Anyway, I feel
- 51:08Speaker 2: like it's real pervy because obviously most people don't experience
- 51:12Speaker 2: that side of it. It's not to say it's hard,
- 51:14Speaker 2: but Jess, this is a question for you. What does
- 51:17Speaker 2: a brand like you know, if we're doing one sponsored
- 51:19Speaker 2: Instagram prost, what's that process look like? Because I feel
- 51:22Speaker 2: like people want to know.
- 51:24Speaker 4: Oh, well, actually, I was going to say before when
- 51:26Speaker 4: you said people don't realize how much time it takes.
- 51:28Speaker 4: My full time job revolves around content like you pay
- 51:31Speaker 4: me to do that every day. I think there's a
- 51:34Speaker 4: lot involved behind the scenes that you know. Sometimes you're oh,
- 51:37Speaker 4: it's like a peach thing with some text on it,
- 51:40Speaker 4: like how much time could that actually take you?
- 51:42Speaker 2: But I mean for.
- 51:43Speaker 4: Us personally, you start conceptualizing it and you go, Okay,
- 51:47Speaker 4: what are we talking about? What's Sometimes it's responsive to
- 51:50Speaker 4: something in the media. We get a lot of people
- 51:52Speaker 4: damning us saying, can you talk about this thing that
- 51:54Speaker 4: I've seen? Can you talk about this new product? Can
- 51:56Speaker 4: you talk about the implications of these changes? And we
- 52:00Speaker 4: view that as a kind of a big part of
- 52:02Speaker 4: what we do is to educate and to help people
- 52:04Speaker 4: understand those things. So we go, okay, concept, what is it?
- 52:08Speaker 4: And then you go, how complicated is that concept? Because
- 52:12Speaker 4: the whole point is that we want people to be
- 52:14Speaker 4: able to understand things easily. Right, So then you're taking time,
- 52:18Speaker 4: I guess, breaking that concept down and making it a
- 52:20Speaker 4: bit more digestible, hopefully making it a bit fun and interesting.
- 52:24Speaker 4: So then you have this concept that's become this kind
- 52:27Speaker 4: of more simplistic version of itself. And from there you go, okay, well,
- 52:31Speaker 4: how do I represent that in a way that's visually engaging.
- 52:34Speaker 4: And that's the design and you have to put that together.
- 52:36Speaker 4: Whether it's shooting a photo which involves you know, getting
- 52:39Speaker 4: props or setting it up and doing lighting and it's
- 52:42Speaker 4: a whole thing, or it's a text post or something
- 52:45Speaker 4: that you design, and then it's graphics and text and
- 52:48Speaker 4: making sure that the contrast is right, making sure that
- 52:50Speaker 4: it's appealing and making sure that it fits in, and
- 52:53Speaker 4: there are all of these I guess, little working parts
- 52:55Speaker 4: in the background that go into it. And then once
- 52:56Speaker 4: that's done, there's the copy and it's you know, what
- 52:59Speaker 4: are the words? How are we communicating? What are we saying?
- 53:02Speaker 4: And right now I feel like I'm just spewing words
- 53:04Speaker 4: out And sometimes when I'm writing caption, that's how I feel.
- 53:06Speaker 4: So you write the caption and you go, oh my god,
- 53:08Speaker 4: no one's going to read that. So you have to
- 53:09Speaker 4: go back and you have to like edit it all
- 53:10Speaker 4: down and you take out all the extra exclamation marks
- 53:13Speaker 4: because I overuse exclamation marks. I get in trouble for it,
- 53:16Speaker 4: and so it's like pairing it back. So sometimes you
- 53:19Speaker 4: do all of this work and you go, oh shit,
- 53:20Speaker 4: like I've got to like take half of that work
- 53:22Speaker 4: out to make it digestible, to make it interesting, to
- 53:25Speaker 4: make it consumable because everybody moves so quickly. You know,
- 53:28Speaker 4: videos can be seven seconds and people go, that's too long,
- 53:32Speaker 4: But seven seconds is not a lot of time to
- 53:35Speaker 4: be able to explain this big overarching concept that we
- 53:39Speaker 4: started with and broke down and then wrote. And so
- 53:42Speaker 4: the whole time that you're doing all of these things,
- 53:43Speaker 4: you're thinking about, is this doing its job? Is this
- 53:47Speaker 4: piece of content helping somebody? Is this piece of content
- 53:50Speaker 4: making somebody feel good? Is this piece of content leaving
- 53:54Speaker 4: the world. I guess it's very dramatic, but like making
- 53:58Speaker 4: an impressional leaving my page or my follower in a
- 54:01Speaker 4: bed position than they were before they saw that piece
- 54:03Speaker 4: of content. And it's a lot of moving parts. And
- 54:06Speaker 4: I can totally see how you go, oh, someone just
- 54:08Speaker 4: like picks up a phone and goes and product. But
- 54:10Speaker 4: it's really not that simple, particularly in space is like ours,
- 54:15Speaker 4: where the passion lies in educating and helping people. And
- 54:20Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know if we've exactly got it right.
- 54:22Speaker 4: If you've ever seen our Instagram and you have feedback,
- 54:24Speaker 4: I'm all here for it.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Be kind. I am softer to cry.
- 54:29Speaker 4: But yeah, there are a lot of working parts to that,
- 54:32Speaker 4: and I guess, especially as a small business, there are
- 54:35Speaker 4: a lot of things that you have to consider about that.
- 54:37Speaker 6: Yeah, it takes a lot more time than I ever
- 54:40Speaker 6: envision and look, I would love to not have to
- 54:42Speaker 6: do it. And that's one thing that I've really kind
- 54:44Speaker 6: of over the last few years, tried to pull back
- 54:46Speaker 6: slowly and not be so content heavy and not like
- 54:50Speaker 6: feel like I have to take selfies for a living,
- 54:52Speaker 6: you know, because I don't really consider myself an influencer.
- 54:56Speaker 6: While I do that a little bit, tiny little bit,
- 54:59Speaker 6: like I'm a I'm a coach. That's what I do.
- 55:01Speaker 6: That's what I'm passionate about. Putting content out there helps
- 55:05Speaker 6: reach people that will either potentially become clients for me
- 55:08Speaker 6: or I will just help them. And I really love
- 55:11Speaker 6: the ability to do that, so I think like it's
- 55:13Speaker 6: a blessing and a curse, the whole social media thing.
- 55:16Speaker 6: I think, you know, it's been so wonderful for me.
- 55:18Speaker 6: It's helped me build a community, as you guys would know,
- 55:20Speaker 6: like even with your Facebook group and things you can,
- 55:23Speaker 6: you can connect to all these people, like I have
- 55:25Speaker 6: more interstate clients than clients in Brisbane, which is so
- 55:28Speaker 6: crazy to me that I'm like, how did these people
- 55:29Speaker 6: find me? And people from other countries And I'm like,
- 55:32Speaker 6: this is so cool that these people find me and
- 55:34Speaker 6: want to work with me, and they wouldn't they wouldn't
- 55:36Speaker 6: have seen me if it wasn't for social media. But
- 55:38Speaker 6: also sometimes it is really tiring, and sometimes I wish
- 55:41Speaker 6: I didn't have to do it, and I should probably
- 55:43Speaker 6: think about investing in things like maybe Google ads and
- 55:45Speaker 6: Facebook ads and not have to get all my.
- 55:47Speaker 5: Leads through socials.
- 55:48Speaker 6: Maybe, but for now, you know, it's one of those
- 55:50Speaker 6: things that it's a means to an end and it
- 55:52Speaker 6: helps me do what I really love and it helps
- 55:54Speaker 6: me genuinely help people. So even though the avenue is
- 55:58Speaker 6: kind of a fluffy little like hey me in my
- 56:00Speaker 6: little seven second tiktog video, like, I know that the
- 56:04Speaker 6: things that come from that and the clients that I
- 56:07Speaker 6: garner from that, that I can genuinely help one on one,
- 56:10Speaker 6: like I'm really helping them, and I just feel so
- 56:14Speaker 6: blessed that I even have the ability to do that.
- 56:16Speaker 4: I have one last question before we go, because I
- 56:18Speaker 4: can see that we're running very close to overtime.
- 56:20Speaker 5: Can chat? Yeah, we can want to.
- 56:23Speaker 2: I want to add to that, though, do not. My
- 56:24Speaker 2: favorite part about all of that stuff that you explained
- 56:27Speaker 2: was is that when you then include a client and
- 56:30Speaker 2: just sends the content to the client, they're like, no,
- 56:32Speaker 2: we don't like it, but we can't put our finger
- 56:34Speaker 2: on it. Like what what do you mean, they're like, yeah,
- 56:37Speaker 2: if you could just remake that entire video where you
- 56:39Speaker 2: baked a cake and then smashed the cake and then
- 56:42Speaker 2: like customize the whole thing to our brand. Yeah, we're
- 56:45Speaker 2: just not sure about it. And then just does another
- 56:47Speaker 2: one and then they're like, maybe just go with the
- 56:49Speaker 2: first one. Yeah, it sucks, It sucks. And then did
- 56:53Speaker 2: you have you guys seen a video on Jess's social
- 56:55Speaker 2: media it's a us net a smash room. Yea, it
- 56:58Speaker 2: was after that happened. Jess, like, I think kind to
- 57:00Speaker 2: break something else, my babe. Let's go break something all right.
- 57:03Speaker 4: The last question I have before we let you go
- 57:06Speaker 4: is you know you said you're wearing two hats to
- 57:08Speaker 4: influence the hat and a small business owner hat. And
- 57:10Speaker 4: we know that a lot of people in our community
- 57:12Speaker 4: are small business owners. I don't know if anybody out
- 57:14Speaker 4: there tonight is a small business owner, but yes, there
- 57:17Speaker 4: we go. But sometimes I think it can be hard
- 57:21Speaker 4: for small business owners. And this is something that we
- 57:22Speaker 4: struggle with as well, that level of I guess self
- 57:27Speaker 4: promotion or confidence in yourself or producing that video or
- 57:31Speaker 4: taking that photo and putting yourself out there, especially when
- 57:34Speaker 4: you're starting out and it's you logging into your other
- 57:36Speaker 4: account to comment on your own content, so it looks
- 57:38Speaker 4: like someone enjoyed it.
- 57:40Speaker 2: That doesn't exist anymore because my partner told me I
- 57:42Speaker 2: how to delete it because creepy.
- 57:45Speaker 4: But how should small businesses deal with those those feelings?
- 57:49Speaker 4: Because sometimes it can be really hard to show up
- 57:52Speaker 4: and to put something out there when you feel like
- 57:54Speaker 4: people aren't enjoying it or aren't receiving it. Is there
- 57:56Speaker 4: any last piece of advice that you can give to
- 58:00Speaker 4: people who might be going through that struggle?
- 58:03Speaker 5: That was a big question. I look.
- 58:05Speaker 6: I think any small business owners, or really anyone that
- 58:07Speaker 6: you have to put yourself out there would would know.
- 58:10Speaker 6: There's so much I guess imposter syndrome that sometimes comes
- 58:13Speaker 6: with these things that it's like, why would anyone invest
- 58:16Speaker 6: in me? Why would anyone want to work with me?
- 58:18Speaker 6: When there are so many other people doing this, and
- 58:21Speaker 6: you know, there are so many other counselors, and there
- 58:23Speaker 6: are so many other coaches out there, And I've really
- 58:25Speaker 6: tried to make sure that I am trying my very
- 58:28Speaker 6: hardest to offer something that is unique. But you know,
- 58:31Speaker 6: sometimes you can't have something perfectly unique and you are
- 58:33Speaker 6: offering something that other people do. So really try and
- 58:37Speaker 6: sit with yourself as to like, why would I want
- 58:39Speaker 6: people to invest in me or my business or my
- 58:41Speaker 6: service or my products whatever it is that you're trying
- 58:44Speaker 6: to kind of get people into, And is it something
- 58:47Speaker 6: that I'm proud of? Would I do this anyway even
- 58:50Speaker 6: if I, you know, only had five clients? And for me,
- 58:53Speaker 6: the answer is absolutely yes. This is, you know, a job,
- 58:57Speaker 6: especially now that in the last few years I've gotten
- 58:59Speaker 6: more into the accounts space and I've worked really hard
- 59:03Speaker 6: to curate the nature and the niche of my business
- 59:06Speaker 6: into body image and eating issues, which is something I
- 59:08Speaker 6: used to struggle with a lot myself. And the biggest
- 59:11Speaker 6: thing for me is that I am now the person
- 59:14Speaker 6: that I really needed five years ago that wasn't around
- 59:18Speaker 6: at the time. And that makes me so proud to
- 59:21Speaker 6: think of like me five years ago, my past self,
- 59:25Speaker 6: like I can now do that for other people, and
- 59:28Speaker 6: I know that that's like such a blessing and maybe
- 59:30Speaker 6: not totally transferable to what every single other business owners does,
- 59:33Speaker 6: but are you solving a problem that can help someone?
- 59:36Speaker 6: And if you help one person or five people, that
- 59:39Speaker 6: is still so worth it. Yes, Obviously, profitability comes into it,
- 59:42Speaker 6: and you need to support yourself. But if you're passionate
- 59:46Speaker 6: about what you do, if you believe in yourself, and
- 59:48Speaker 6: if you can back yourself and say, like I am
- 59:51Speaker 6: passionate about this, this aligns with my values. This represents
- 59:54Speaker 6: the person I want to be. Whether you succeed or
- 59:57Speaker 6: whether you fail, I think you'll still have something to
- 59:59Speaker 6: be proud of.
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: So you know, it just keeps you moving forward.
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: So for me, when I have quiet weeks or I
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: don't have a lot of clients, there are definitely lolls
- 1:00:06Speaker 6: in the year where things quite and down, I always
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: come back to this is a job that makes me
- 1:00:11Speaker 6: so proud to do what I do, and I genuinely
- 1:00:14Speaker 6: touch lives, And like.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: You know, I'm not perfect.
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: I'm not the very best counselor or you know, the
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: most experienced in the whole world, but I know that
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: what I do is really impactful. And at the end
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: of the day, I sleep while knowing like I've worked
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: my butt off for this and that I know I'm
- 1:00:29Speaker 6: doing something good in the world that just makes me
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: so happy. So like there will always be moments of doubt,
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: there will always be times that you question yourself or your.
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: Skills or your abilities or whatever it might be.
- 1:00:38Speaker 6: But if you're doing something that you really really care about,
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: it's worth failing. It's worth risking it because at least
- 1:00:46Speaker 6: you tried, and you tried with something that you really
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: care about, And isn't that like so much better than
- 1:00:50Speaker 6: just like doing a boring job that you just don't
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: give a crap about.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: I could not agree more. We have one We're girl
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: who also agrees. Sammy, I have adored talking to you
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: as always, but unfortunately I do think that that is
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: all we have time for. So a round of applause
