- 0:00Oh, God. Oh, my God.
- 0:12Real quick about
- 0:14how tall do we think this guy is?
- 0:16Oh, because it's going to grow.
- 0:17I would say that's like one point seven five inches.
- 0:20Oh, my goodness. You're a ruler.
- 0:22Yeah, but I don't want to go all the way back to my one point seven five seems good.
- 0:25All right. Something like that.
- 0:26Well, we'll call it there.
- 0:27All right. All right. Let me say that.
- 0:29I don't think that that container is going to be able to contain the stress.
- 0:32Sasquatch can anything contain the Sasquatch? No.
- 0:35I would give it four centimeters.
- 0:37Hmm. Going European.
- 0:39Now I have to get a rule.
- 0:40Yeah, now we're going to find out.
- 0:42Now we're we need the truth.
- 0:44All right. What was the measurement?
- 0:45Just a hair over two inches.
- 0:46Oh, OK.
- 0:48OK. So five point something centimeters.
- 0:51I think we both won because we didn't go over.
- 0:52Yeah. Price is right. Rules.
- 0:54We win.
- 0:55Also, I do want to warn you guys that literally I wasn't joking
- 0:58that I'm the worst person to do this because I don't know anything about movies.
- 1:01Neither do I. That's not the point. Oh, great.
- 1:02Oh, yeah. No, no. That's why we're not film critics.
- 1:05That's why we're not like finding the critically best Nicholas Cage movie.
- 1:09This is that would be too easy.
- 1:10Like we could just Google that. Right.
- 1:12And it would be.
- 1:13I think Las Vegas.
- 1:14That's what I was going to say.
- 1:15Just because that's the serious.
- 1:17Well, it's the one you got an Oscar for. Right.
- 1:18So critically, that's got to be the best.
- 1:21What was his Oscar nomination for for adaptation?
- 1:24Was it best actor, best supporting actor?
- 1:27That's a good question, actually. OK, good.
- 1:29I feel like I'm on my level because these are all the questions
- 1:31I could never answer, but you guys can play the twins.
- 1:33He played twins in that movie.
- 1:34So I think it was both two nominations. Yeah. Right.
- 1:37It should. Well, because I'm moving one like almost everything
- 1:41except for best actor.
- 1:42I thought it was nominated for writing.
- 1:45It definitely was nominated for it as well. Oh, did he?
- 1:47OK. Oh, and we can Google stuff. Oh, yeah.
- 1:51Oh, yeah, because we edit the shit out of it.
- 1:52So any time you got to look something up, maybe I should get my phone.
- 1:55So I have to Google everything. Yeah, go for it.
- 1:57OK. Not going to hurt our feelings.
- 1:59I don't bother Googling it anymore because I'm just going to lie.
- 2:02Yeah. Just do it off the dome. Make it up. Yeah.
- 2:05Yeah, absolutely. This podcast, you can do anything.
- 2:08It's you know, there's a world of freedom in not respecting your audience.
- 2:13Yeah. That just opens up.
- 2:16And I feel that way. It shows.
- 2:17So Chris Cooper got the nomination for best supporting role
- 2:21and Nick is best actor in a leading role.
- 2:23I think it should have been Donald was the better character.
- 2:27Yeah, I agree with that.
- 2:28I got shot. You seen that?
- 2:29That fucked up.
- 2:30No, I didn't even know that was a movie.
- 2:32This is a level that you're working with here.
- 2:34But what's it? Do you want to summarize it briefly?
- 2:36Just Nick Cage plays Charlie Kaufman, real life writer
- 2:39Charlie Kaufman in a movie written by Charlie Kaufman
- 2:42about him not writing a movie about plants.
- 2:47Yeah. Yeah. He's trying to adapt a book
- 2:49that doesn't have like a plot into a film.
- 2:54And he's struggling to do that because obviously there's
- 2:57challenges involved in writing something that doesn't have plot
- 3:00because it's about plants and he struggles.
- 3:03But then he's got this fictional twin brother
- 3:08who decides that he wants to get into film writing.
- 3:11And he basically starts writing like Michael Bay movies and becomes popular.
- 3:15And Charlie Kaufman just gets more neurotic about it.
- 3:18But the best like this movie, the best part about it is real life.
- 3:22Charlie Kaufman was supposed to write a book about plants
- 3:25or write a movie about plants and instead wrote this movie
- 3:29about not being able to write a movie about plants and turn that in.
- 3:32And it's got made.
- 3:33Weirdly meta. It's the same guy who made Being John Malkovich.
- 3:37Oh, yeah. So it's got that kind of level.
- 3:40Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
- 3:42OK, I'm going to watch that one next.
- 3:43Yeah. All right.
- 3:44Two and a half, two and a hair and Sasquatch going into the water.
- 3:49Start the timer.
- 3:51Boy, that was anti-climactic.
- 3:52I do the timer. It's moist.
- 3:54No, it's fine.
- 3:54OK. Also, we surprise later.
- 3:58I saw I saw Horn earlier and he was like,
- 4:02I don't listen to your podcast anymore because I hate that you didn't make
- 4:06adaptation go forward.
- 4:08I was like, dude, that was episode two. Yeah.
- 4:11Oh, you really dug in.
- 4:13We're on episode like 41 right now.
- 4:15Yeah, this is a thing we're doing.
- 4:19Give it another listen.
- 4:20I'm sorry we lost out on you, Nick.
- 4:22Yeah, I want that viewership.
- 4:24It's probably made a lot of people angry is what I'm guessing.
- 4:25Oh, absolutely. Oh, we have.
- 4:27I mean, we realize that you could see them are here.
- 4:29The majority I thought it was like you're going to do them all.
- 4:31And then we've been doing this for well over a year.
- 4:34Oh, yeah. OK.
- 4:35So I've missed the boat on that, too.
- 4:36But I'm going to go back.
- 4:37I'm going to listen to every single one.
- 4:38Don't start starting at like episode seven.
- 4:41I'd say seven, eight.
- 4:43We kind of hit a little bit of a stride
- 4:44and figure out that we're not good at reviewing movies.
- 4:50The same day we had to switch into Hayden's room.
- 4:54Peter just yelled at us.
- 4:58Yeah, I became dead that day.
- 5:00I was just I had no patience for the two movies and it was just a nonsense day.
- 5:05So did that explosion make the cut like the edit cut?
- 5:08No, no.
- 5:10But I have the raw audio for a new $15 tier.
- 5:14I'm going to hear me be a dick.
- 5:17Listen to Peter Dressus down. Yeah.
- 5:20Before we get going, I do have a couple of Christmas gifts.
- 5:23Oh, that one's for Peter.
- 5:26Thank you.
- 5:27So sweet.
- 5:28Oh, also, happy New Year.
- 5:30Happy New Year.
- 5:30Oh, yeah, it's the first.
- 5:32I didn't bring you guys any presents.
- 5:35I didn't bring you anything either,
- 5:36but you're welcome to share this coffee with me.
- 5:39It's opened and I've drank three quarters of it.
- 5:41I'd love to. OK.
- 5:43Thank you.
- 5:46Oh, I think I just tried that and it's delicious.
- 5:50Thank you. Yeah.
- 5:51I also got a a sign machine.
- 5:54So here is a shock sign.
- 6:00Here's a female side.
- 6:02Wow.
- 6:06I figure these are things that you guys can use
- 6:09ongoing in your friendships.
- 6:12End of the world, say is good.
- 6:13Oh, what are we going to do?
- 6:18I got an instant audience.
- 6:19So here's applause.
- 6:26You're going to use that one a lot, aren't you?
- 6:28Yeah. Wow.
- 6:30You shouldn't have given this to me at the beginning of the plot.
- 6:32I know now we have too much weird power.
- 6:34This isn't my problem.
- 6:35This is Peter's problem.
- 6:36Peter's going to have to edit all of this out.
- 6:38Oh, damn it, Nick.
- 6:40Oh, you know, I mean, use your sign machine for that.
- 6:43I put it on the floor already.
- 6:48Now, speaking of things you guys are tired of, welcome back to Cage
- 6:51Match, going around about way of meeting Nicholas Cage.
- 6:53I'm your host, Sean, here with my co-host Nick and Nick
- 6:57and our producer Peter. Hello.
- 6:59And we have a special guest today, Alex Guy. Hello.
- 7:04Welcome to Cage Match. Thank you.
- 7:06We take 64 Nicholas Cage movies and figure out what
- 7:09the most like Nicholas Cage movie is by as decided by us. Yeah.
- 7:15Yeah. And people on the Internet kind of think that we're OK.
- 7:18Hey, yeah, that's a good line.
- 7:20There are dozens of us.
- 7:23Yeah, that's about the right number.
- 7:25So, Alex, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself?
- 7:28Just in general.
- 7:29And then what is your relationship with Nick Cage up to this point?
- 7:35OK, I'm Alex Guy.
- 7:37I am from Seattle, which is weird.
- 7:40I'm a musician and I play violin and viola and piano.
- 7:44And I tour around a lot.
- 7:45But my secret, an ideal dream job when I was growing up
- 7:49were either being a librarian or a comedian.
- 7:52This is my first shot at doing anything funny.
- 7:55So I'm very, very excited.
- 7:57I'm expecting to fail pretty badly, but I feel like that will build characters.
- 8:00So I'm ready for that.
- 8:02And OK, let's see.
- 8:04My relationship with Nicholas Cage is, I think, more or less nonexistent.
- 8:07Like I could have picked him out of the lineup or if he walked down the street,
- 8:11especially if he was dressed as one of the characters of the very few movies
- 8:15I've seen him in, I could probably recognize him.
- 8:16But pretty much none.
- 8:19So this was kind of fun to just get to know him a little bit
- 8:22in two weird semi slapstick contexts.
- 8:26Oh, and these are good films, too. These are.
- 8:28Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 8:29I mean, Raising Arizona and Peggy Sue got married.
- 8:32People have fond memories about these films.
- 8:34Oh, yeah.
- 8:35I would love to meet the person who doesn't have fond memories of them.
- 8:38Like, well, I was just thinking about it.
- 8:40It's like, oh, what would non fond memories like who was getting like
- 8:44just beat up in the back of like a sizzler
- 8:47while Peggy Sue got married was on the TV?
- 8:49It's like, that's a terrible story.
- 8:51You don't want to remember that.
- 8:52It would be the soundtrack to Raising Arizona.
- 8:54The.
- 8:57I don't know. My sister,
- 8:59when I said we were watching this the first time, she was very like,
- 9:02that voice.
- 9:03So people are just voice people are strong.
- 9:06Oh, yeah. Nicholas Cage's voice in this film.
- 9:08So I assume we're talking about Peggy Sue got married.
- 9:10Sure. Yeah.
- 9:11Started out. Yeah.
- 9:12OK, I would say I totally agree with the voice because I again,
- 9:15I wasn't familiar with Nick Cage too much.
- 9:17But when I saw him in Raising Arizona, I was like, oh, my God,
- 9:19I like this guy so much more.
- 9:20Like he drove me crazy and Peggy Sue got married, to be quite honest.
- 9:24Just a quick summarization.
- 9:26The Peggy Sue got married Peggy Sue in the midst of
- 9:30going through a divorce, goes to her 25th anniversary,
- 9:34like high school reunion has kind of a
- 9:39a mental breakdown when Nicholas Cage, her husband shows up
- 9:44and so she faints, then goes back in time
- 9:47and to when she was a kid and enjoys all the things she didn't get to enjoy
- 9:52because she was in this relationship.
- 9:54But then in the end decides, however, to move forward.
- 9:59And maybe things change, maybe they don't change.
- 10:03And maybe she changed the past.
- 10:05But obviously not significantly.
- 10:07Oh, yeah. Was there any? OK.
- 10:08Like, so one of the things is that Nick Cage in high school wants to be a musician.
- 10:13But you know, from the beginning of the movie that he's like a failed musician.
- 10:15Yeah, essentially.
- 10:17But then did any of was any of that even any different?
- 10:20Like, do you guys remember?
- 10:21The one thing they have is the poet kid,
- 10:26not Dedric Bader, not Dedric Bader, but looks a lot like a young Dedric Bader.
- 10:29Yeah, he sure does.
- 10:31He like what's he dedicated, dedicated like in the forward or well,
- 10:35not the forward, the dedication.
- 10:37He dedicates the book to her, even though in high school,
- 10:40originally they never interacted. Right. OK.
- 10:43I think there were a lot of things that ended up getting cut out of a longer
- 10:47version of this movie.
- 10:48Like there was the woman who is at the reunion in a wheelchair.
- 10:51And it's like, oh, Barbara or whatever.
- 10:54And that was supposed to be a whole story arc and it never gets played out.
- 10:57Well, there's context.
- 10:58There's the scene where like the guy's driving
- 11:01and the girl's making out with them while they're driving.
- 11:05And that's when they see Peggy Sue with not Dedric Bader.
- 11:08And I'm like, this is this is when she gets put in the wheelchair.
- 11:11But it's it wasn't the same woman.
- 11:13Now, technically, it could have been that moment when they run her over.
- 11:19Just a little hit and a little light hit and run in the 50s between friends.
- 11:22What's the big deal?
- 11:24I think you sweep that under the rug in the 50s, usually.
- 11:26Well, if your family's wealthy in town, then just easily dismissed.
- 11:30When first thing you do when you go back in time is we've learned
- 11:32through any time travel movies, you get drunk.
- 11:35Oh, yeah. With your parents.
- 11:36Boldly. But then, yeah, the parents were all like you were drinking.
- 11:40And what's the 50s?
- 11:41Yeah, probably fine.
- 11:43Like, it wouldn't be very proper of her.
- 11:47She's a senior in high school.
- 11:48She might be 18.
- 11:48I'm pretty sure that was the drinking age at that point, wasn't it?
- 11:50What did the drinking age change?
- 11:51No, it would have been 18 at that point.
- 11:53Probably. So they probably were because they go to that bar
- 11:56or the club at one point.
- 11:58She and not Dedric Bader.
- 11:59Oh, and she gets served a drink.
- 12:01Yeah, right. Yeah.
- 12:02And they leave the trick, Bader, a whole bottle, a whole bottle.
- 12:04Yeah. Don't take it with them.
- 12:06Those idiots.
- 12:07That's very spaghetti Western.
- 12:09Because the first person, the first woman ever
- 12:13touches his throbbing thrill hammer is still in love with her ex boyfriend.
- 12:18Do you think she was his first? Probably.
- 12:20He kind of acted like he was real epic and dramatic about it.
- 12:23He was very much like, you're going to move with me to Utah and pull polygamy is legal.
- 12:27Race chickens. That's right.
- 12:29Yeah, chickens. That was a weird, weird reach.
- 12:31Weird reach, dude.
- 12:33It was a strange decision.
- 12:36I don't from a film standpoint, it's like that's a fucking curveball.
- 12:42I wasn't expecting.
- 12:43I mean, I still find it so upsetting that you're a woman in your mid 40s
- 12:48fully on board and in love with the 17 year old's poetry.
- 12:51Now hold on. I have to sleep with them.
- 12:53Let's let me. OK, wait.
- 12:55That poetry was sick.
- 12:56Yeah, that's really powerful.
- 12:59Like I could get I could get by with like, OK, it's with Nick Cage,
- 13:03because that's your ex husband.
- 13:05You did like have 20 out of years together.
- 13:08You slept with him already. That's fine.
- 13:09But now you're in love with the 17 year old poet.
- 13:12Here's a question that I've got that's going to make us think.
- 13:17Maybe not much and maybe not very deeply.
- 13:18Are you guys ready for thinking?
- 13:20I'm ready for the thing.
- 13:22So if you go back in time, say you're like 40 years old or something,
- 13:26you go back in time to like when you're 20, we'll say 20, 21.
- 13:30Twenty one's a great time to go back in time to.
- 13:33And you are at a bar and like, say you're going to hook up with somebody.
- 13:37Is it weird and creepy because mentally you're like 40?
- 13:43But like your body is 20, you went back in time.
- 13:47What what are the time travelers laws
- 13:50regarding like half your age plus seven or whatever?
- 13:54That is a great question.
- 13:55I think the laws are out the window, but it's personal preference.
- 13:59So you should answer for yourself.
- 14:00What would you do? Ask the time cops.
- 14:02Yeah.
- 14:03Fuck the time cops.
- 14:05I don't know. I got nothing for that.
- 14:06Now, I'm not going to put myself out there on this one.
- 14:08I might have a real problematic opinion on this.
- 14:10I don't know. I mean,
- 14:13like, but stuff only, I guess.
- 14:16I was going to say foot stuff only.
- 14:18Oh, yeah, that's fair.
- 14:19Two loopholes.
- 14:20It's fine. At 21, you're at a bar.
- 14:23It just in terms of like consent age, still weird.
- 14:28I think it's more a mental thing, but just the fact that they're young.
- 14:31Deirdre Fader is a consenting adult in this movie.
- 14:35Yeah, he was 18.
- 14:36Oh, yeah, that's true.
- 14:38Also, she had like she'd had such a fantasy about him for so long,
- 14:41and she had just seen him.
- 14:43No, she's just seen the picture in the union.
- 14:45Oh, and those track shorts.
- 14:46Yes. It is like startling eyes, which also he didn't do anything athletic
- 14:50in the actual. No, he's the worst runner lately.
- 14:54But I could see why.
- 14:56I mean, personally, for me, I think that if I went back, I just
- 14:59I'm not actually attracted to people in their early 20s anymore
- 15:02because I am a person in their mid 40s.
- 15:05Well, that's not why it's just sort of naturally happened.
- 15:06So I doubt I would probably go for some older person
- 15:09and they would think that they were hooking up with a young person.
- 15:12Little did they know they would be hooking up with a middle aged person
- 15:16like a honeypot situation.
- 15:17Totally. So that's probably what I would do.
- 15:20I do like this idea of sleeping with older people going back in time,
- 15:23but more in terms of like weaponizing that
- 15:26because you could start taking out people you don't like
- 15:31once they're nice and old and sleep with you by fucking them to death.
- 15:34Right. Yeah.
- 15:35Well, you've got all this like youthful energy and you can harness it
- 15:39with your like old person mentality and give them heart attacks.
- 15:44Wow. OK.
- 15:45You're trying to get the will. You're a black widow.
- 15:47The perfect crime. Wow.
- 15:48All right. This really motivates motivates me to want to build a time machine.
- 15:53So thanks for that.
- 15:54No, I really like Peggy.
- 15:55So you got married. I can't remember if I said this last time,
- 15:58but this is kind of a reverse big.
- 16:00Yeah, a little bit.
- 16:01I do like how they get over the whole like in this era of filmmaking,
- 16:05all teenagers just look 30 by just not having teenagers in this movie.
- 16:09Totally. Yeah.
- 16:10Oh, one thing that was weird, I was looking at ages of people
- 16:13and Nick Cage when he filmed this was 22, I think.
- 16:17And Helen Hunt, who plays his future daughter, was 24.
- 16:22It's like weird, but that makes sense in terms of.
- 16:25No, I mean, it's all fine, but it's just still strange.
- 16:28Just like teenager thing, because she's also playing like a 15 year old or something.
- 16:32No, she was just their first kid, wasn't she?
- 16:34She'd be because they got Peggy Sue got pregnant at 18.
- 16:38And then what reunion was it? 25th. All right.
- 16:43So that's perfect. Yeah. All right.
- 16:45How about Sophia Coppola? Let's come back to that.
- 16:47Oh, so rough teenagers are weird.
- 16:53Oh, she played the little sister.
- 16:55I totally miss that. Wow. OK.
- 16:57I have an assumption that like most of Peggy Sue's family died
- 17:00in a horrible bus crash at some point. Oh.
- 17:03Driven by Sophia. Maybe because she's just so like
- 17:07when she sees her sister, she's like so overwhelmed.
- 17:10She hasn't seen her sister in years. So I'm assuming she's dead.
- 17:13Or they're just estranged because that was the other.
- 17:15I was wondering that, too. Is she dead or is it just that they don't talk at all
- 17:18anymore? I mean, I wouldn't want to talk to that.
- 17:21Right. I mean, it's understandable.
- 17:23We talked about it a bit, but Nicholas Cage's
- 17:27vocal affectations in this film. Good God.
- 17:29It's so good. I love his voice.
- 17:32I love a Nicholas Cage voice after G Force.
- 17:36It's now I get it.
- 17:37I'm 100 percent on board with this voice.
- 17:40Yeah, that was one of the big things, Alex.
- 17:42I don't know if you knew this, but this was directed by his uncle.
- 17:46And he kind of came to set and just started talking in that voice.
- 17:51And everyone was like, fuck that, stop it.
- 17:55And then he was like, nope, not gonna.
- 17:58And the uncle tried to get him to stop and he did not.
- 18:01Yeah. Wow. So was he already famous at that point?
- 18:04No. Oh, so he's just kind of like a surly badass.
- 18:07Yeah. I mean, it's a weird flex to be like, oh, Peggy Sue.
- 18:12I mean, OK, so they had just had to live with it.
- 18:16Yeah, I could see. Here's what here's how I took it.
- 18:19I did not know that. But and it was so weird and annoying.
- 18:22But then I also thought, OK, he's trying to be an artist, right?
- 18:25He's trying to be a musician.
- 18:27He's a teenage boy and he's
- 18:31kind of a big fish in a small pond in some ways.
- 18:33And I could actually see some dorky teenage boy doing that on purpose
- 18:38to just like try it out and be different and be interesting or whatever.
- 18:41So it could kind of work in that context, maybe.
- 18:44I don't know why I'm defending it because I found it super annoying.
- 18:46I kind of read it because he commits heart to any role he plays.
- 18:51And I was like, he's supposed to be this big deal,
- 18:55but never goes on, goes on to just media awkward.
- 18:57He goes on to being a crazy Charlie, crazy Charlie.
- 19:00Right. So just like. Is he just trying to play up that
- 19:05he's actually just kind of a dorky kid, like refers to himself as Mr.
- 19:07Entertainment. Oh, when he aspect, he says like,
- 19:10do you think people still like me if I'm no longer Mr.
- 19:13Entertainment? I was like, do people like him to begin with?
- 19:15All I can think is like, people probably like you more if you stop calling yourself
- 19:19that. Right. I don't know.
- 19:20I've never stopped calling myself names like Nikki Showbiz.
- 19:25And I haven't been involved in that in forever.
- 19:30Nikki Showbiz. Yeah, that's you.
- 19:32Let's do two Z's. Two Z's.
- 19:35Oh, nice biz.
- 19:36So do we want to talk about the attempted murder in the room?
- 19:41Yeah, that scene is so weird.
- 19:42I still do not understand it.
- 19:45So it's that scene where he's sneaking into her room at night and like.
- 19:49The pillow. Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:51So first, the creepy fingers.
- 19:53Again, that had to be something he just did and they couldn't get him to stop.
- 19:56Yeah, it makes no sense in the movie.
- 19:58I'm assuming when he's lit and he sees the shadow, he's just like
- 20:02because he's always wanted to play Dracula.
- 20:04So that was him trying to do a nose for a rock tooth thing.
- 20:06For sure. Poorly.
- 20:09I think the character also like Charlie just has such a love for like
- 20:14melodrama and those.
- 20:18I'm not super well versed in the entertainment of the 50s, but
- 20:21or this was 1960, but 50s and 60s.
- 20:25I imagine that the acting was much larger in that time.
- 20:30And so he probably had a real melodramatic flair being Mr.
- 20:34Entertainment and all there.
- 20:38That's what I would have done.
- 20:39But why did he try and murder her?
- 20:41Because she slept with a homeboy.
- 20:44I mean, he just thought about it.
- 20:46Right. Like he didn't actually press the pillow on her face.
- 20:49She woke up.
- 20:50Oh, well, OK, I wasn't totally sure on that.
- 20:52If he kind of like put the pillow aside and then because she was sort of talking
- 20:55in her sleep and yeah, that was weird.
- 20:57And then he was like, let's go to the basement.
- 20:59And I was like, oh, he's actually going to kill her.
- 21:01Don't go to a second location.
- 21:03Why? She's like, OK, just walks down there with him.
- 21:06Yeah, that was that was strange.
- 21:09Were there any other attempted murders in the movie or is that just the one?
- 21:12I think that was the only one.
- 21:14And whatever happened to the lady in the wheelchair? Yeah.
- 21:17Well, you Nick looked up that the woman that Charlie cheats on Peggy Sue
- 21:22with is credited in the film, but her scene got. Oh, yeah.
- 21:25Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:28It was only his own dammit was only ever only ever in two other films.
- 21:31The actress. Yeah.
- 21:32But then she directed a few things, but not much. Yeah.
- 21:35Yeah. So she has a credited role, but her scenes were cut is what it was.
- 21:39Dang. So weird.
- 21:40That's her name still does show up in the credits. Yeah.
- 21:43Can you imagine the like director's cut or the uncut version of this movie?
- 21:47It's so many cyborgs.
- 21:48It's pretty fucking long.
- 21:50And I cannot imagine what they really would have put in there
- 21:53that would have made it better.
- 21:55I mean, this is what an hour 40 hour 40.
- 21:57Yeah, it feels like a strong.
- 21:59It does feel like it did.
- 22:01I felt like I was doing homework when I mean, I'm going to reveal my opinion.
- 22:05Wait, is it too soon?
- 22:06Oh, that's fine. No, you can say it.
- 22:07And I just like, OK, I just feel like there's no contest
- 22:10because this movie felt like doing homework.
- 22:13I was like, OK, I agreed to do this.
- 22:15I have to get through this film.
- 22:16But I was like and I didn't do I was going to like fold laundry.
- 22:19I was like, just watch the movie.
- 22:20But I just feel like, OK, so one of the things is that
- 22:25what's the name of the person who plays Peggy Sue? Kathleen Turner.
- 22:28Thank you. OK. Who I love.
- 22:30Don't look to me for names.
- 22:31That is definitely not my thing.
- 22:33Like no names. Yeah.
- 22:34Nicky showed us no names.
- 22:36I'm glad you wrote your name down.
- 22:38So I did come back to that every week.
- 22:41Well, I was just going to say that, like
- 22:43multiple things I loved about Raising Arizona.
- 22:45But the contrast for me of how Raising Arizona was so fucking funny,
- 22:49but also had a lot of emotion behind it.
- 22:51And I felt like Peggy Sue was just like kind of slapstick fake.
- 22:55Like there was no real it's sort of funny.
- 22:57But then it's also like there was nothing to grab on to of like
- 23:00actually caring about people or like empathizing.
- 23:02Whereas Raising Arizona was like everything like in a very explosive way.
- 23:05Like so I kind of was missing that in the movie for a little gray.
- 23:10But the other thing is that the way that she acts like when she's in her teenage
- 23:14body, I think she's trying to be sort of like extra exuberant
- 23:18and like really like girlish.
- 23:20But she was already acting that way from like the first moment of the film.
- 23:24And I was like, yeah, she's so like wishy washy,
- 23:27like putting the dress on and stuff in the beginning, like,
- 23:29oh, maybe I shouldn't do this.
- 23:31Oh, this is foolish. I shouldn't.
- 23:33Yeah. It could just be her deal.
- 23:34But I was also like it would have been interesting if there was like more of a switch
- 23:37when she actually went from one time to the other or something.
- 23:40Yeah, I think Charlie really fucked with her head.
- 23:44Yeah. In their marriage.
- 23:46She seems very neurotic.
- 23:47OK, so I should have more sympathy for her.
- 23:49No, you don't have to have sympathy for her.
- 23:51I don't have sympathy for her. Yeah.
- 23:53I will say, oh, my God.
- 23:54Sorry, I got to talk about her distraught face.
- 23:56I was just about to ask you about her distraught face.
- 24:01Everything's so hard.
- 24:04Oh, this is a time where I really wish that everyone could see next
- 24:08day, which very rarely one more.
- 24:12That's pretty good.
- 24:15That's very true to life, actually.
- 24:16For the patrons. Yeah, good.
- 24:19You lucky people who give us money.
- 24:21You get to see Nick's face.
- 24:24You guys don't reveal our emails or anything, right?
- 24:26Because I'm sure there's people who love this movie that currently hate me.
- 24:29Oh, no, no. OK.
- 24:30Of the 12 or however many people are listening, it's like, oh,
- 24:33it's at least 13. OK.
- 24:35There's got to be at least two who are going to track me down.
- 24:38You had seen this movie before, though, Alex, correct?
- 24:41Yeah, I think so.
- 24:42I think I saw it when I was maybe
- 24:45maybe a teenager or maybe I just saw part of it on accident at some point.
- 24:49Like, I didn't have a memory of the whole thing, but definitely
- 24:52I had images in my head, so I'm sure I saw it some.
- 24:54What is your opinion of Nicolas Cage's singing?
- 24:58Oh, I thought he sounded good.
- 25:02Am I? I could be.
- 25:03I mean, I wasn't like really listening like to listen for that,
- 25:06but I like I feel like he sounded good.
- 25:08So he does give you two different, yeah, like genres of singing in this
- 25:12between the R&B group and his like do op.
- 25:17Yeah. Men's a cappella thing.
- 25:18And his rewrite of a Beatles classic.
- 25:20Well, I mean, that he totally bombs on.
- 25:22I know. When he would change it to like,
- 25:24you change, change the yes to use.
- 25:28Yes to use.
- 25:30Yes. So his songwriting choices leave something to be desired.
- 25:32But but yeah, I mean, in the do up group, they were sort of like so so dorky.
- 25:36It was more funny.
- 25:37But like, yeah, I thought he sounded good.
- 25:40I thought he was quite good.
- 25:41Yeah. I enjoyed his voice in this.
- 25:43I enjoyed it, too.
- 25:44But I think Nicolas Cage is singing through the couple movies.
- 25:49We've seen him sing in is pretty enjoyable for somebody who's dominantly an actor.
- 25:55He's not looking to get an EGOT or anything. Right.
- 25:58Although if he did, I'd be there for it.
- 26:00Fuck, yeah. Yeah.
- 26:01100 percent. You get it all in one go.
- 26:04I do enjoy when he does when they do the quartet, the a cappella thing.
- 26:08There is a guy with a guitar on the stage who's just snapping along.
- 26:14He's just what did you say?
- 26:16Nick is like, that's just the guy who brings the guitar to a party.
- 26:18Oh, yeah. No. After that, he probably played Wonderwall.
- 26:22Here's a new hit for you kids.
- 26:24Yeah. He was on his own time travel adventure
- 26:26to make Wonderwall smash it.
- 26:29And it didn't take for years.
- 26:32He's just been trying out this guy's from the year 38, nine.
- 26:35And he he just came back in time.
- 26:38He's like, there's a decade somewhere in this world that needs Wonderwall.
- 26:45I'm the man to give it to them. Yeah.
- 26:48I love Jim Carrey in that duop, though.
- 26:50You know, he steals it for me.
- 26:52Jim Carrey as Walt is a really good role.
- 26:54So I like that weird.
- 26:56It's weird. Like all these guys are such shitheads to. Oh, yeah.
- 27:01Well, what is it that whatever Walt wants?
- 27:04Walt, yeah, whatever Walter wants Walter gets.
- 27:08And then we they like giggled after this.
- 27:09I am so at the party.
- 27:11It's like, hey, somebody turn out the lights so we can make out.
- 27:16I mean, there are definitely parts of this film
- 27:17involving the time travel aspect that I'm like, why do we need this?
- 27:21Walt grinding up pharmaceuticals.
- 27:24Not the every reunion.
- 27:26Yeah. Is it pharmaceuticals or just coke?
- 27:28Because I was pretty sure it was just coke.
- 27:30Oh, he's no. He says the best thing about being a dentist
- 27:34is the high grade pharmaceuticals.
- 27:35Yeah. I was confused by that, too, because I was thinking it was coke.
- 27:38And I was like, I don't know what that is, actually. Yeah.
- 27:41And then the grandparents and the cult.
- 27:45Yeah. And the great hats.
- 27:46Let's talk about the great hats.
- 27:47I mean, it's a lodge and every good lodge has hats.
- 27:51That's what it says to it.
- 27:52Peggy Sue, right? It's something along those lines.
- 27:55But as somebody who's been involved in lodge functions, they have hats.
- 27:59I love that their activities were like, let's teleport
- 28:03a young woman back to the future and then we'll play cards. Yeah.
- 28:07We haven't done this in like 20, 30 years.
- 28:08Let's just send her back in time or forward in time and, you know,
- 28:12then play cards.
- 28:13She disappears from kidnapping and they're like, the girl's gone.
- 28:17Get the cards.
- 28:18That's the quickest Stockholm syndrome ever, because he kidnaps her.
- 28:22They have about five minute little like argument and tussle in the greenhouse.
- 28:25Then they get down to business.
- 28:27And then you get Helen Hunt.
- 28:28Then you get Helen Hunt.
- 28:29They did get down to business in the rain. Yeah.
- 28:33It was like a greenhouse. I think they had some cover. Yeah.
- 28:35And I think they went outside of the greenhouse.
- 28:37Like, yeah, he runs after her. It was a little sloppy. Yeah.
- 28:41A little sloppy, floppy.
- 28:43Wait, but that was the first time, too.
- 28:45Yes. Remember, they were waiting till marriage.
- 28:47That's right. Now, but it wasn't her first time.
- 28:50Oh, it by Wang.
- 28:57I have the voice that was born for this.
- 28:59Yeah. Yours is perfect.
- 29:02I don't really have much else to say about this movie unless you want to get
- 29:04into a weird like time travel physics and how this they're dumb.
- 29:07But I'm not.
- 29:09I don't think Nick. I don't think Peter cares.
- 29:11Not enough. Not enough for me to edit this.
- 29:14We've already talked about age of consent laws. So.
- 29:18Although probably because it was all just a faint and then a wake up,
- 29:21it was probably just a dream.
- 29:22Like, let's be real. Like, it wasn't a real.
- 29:24There was the dedication in the.
- 29:25Bucs. That's right.
- 29:27The book. Yeah.
- 29:28But even if it is, even if she thinks it's real, she wants to go back
- 29:31to the future to be with her kids, but she's already broken up with.
- 29:35Nicholas Cage. Right.
- 29:37And they don't sleep together, which means she doesn't have kids in the future.
- 29:40I think she hadn't thought it through.
- 29:41No, I was going to say back to the future hadn't come out yet,
- 29:44so she wouldn't have known how time travel works.
- 29:46That's true. That's a good point.
- 29:48But it is also true that like they didn't go very hard
- 29:50into like making any plausible reason of how she could have ended up going back.
- 29:54She just literally fainted from stress, which if that's if it's
- 29:58as easy as that, we're all in trouble.
- 30:00Well, unless it's unique to her, she could have just a special fainting powers.
- 30:05OK, that's good.
- 30:06She's like a fainting goat.
- 30:07But instead of making a cool noise, she just goes back to when she was 18.
- 30:10Isn't this essentially what Moira McTaggart
- 30:12powers turned out to be in the new X-Men run?
- 30:15Pretty much. Yeah.
- 30:16Just dies and regains consciousness from birth again
- 30:20and gets to relive her life, make new choices.
- 30:23Whoa. That's a cool power.
- 30:26Yeah, she has a limited number of times because she knows that eventually
- 30:30there will be one that will be the end of it.
- 30:32So she tries to make things right for all mutants in those
- 30:36limited number of lifetimes.
- 30:37She has if we're a comic book podcast now, we're just going to talk about.
- 30:40She also she also retains all her memories from her all her previous lives,
- 30:44even in utero, like comes to consciousness as a fetus.
- 30:48That's a terrifying concept.
- 30:49Yeah. It has several lifetimes of memories.
- 30:52It's just sitting there. Yeah.
- 30:54Plotting, making little changes every time to see if she can.
- 30:59It's a little tiny baby.
- 31:01A little whiteboard in the uterus. Yeah.
- 31:04This this joke, this joke was for me only.
- 31:07Yeah, I'm going to I'm going to be Nick and I
- 31:10are going to be the only ones who listen to our podcasters like great call out.
- 31:14I like this. This is a conversation that could go somewhere.
- 31:16It's got legs.
- 31:18But yeah, that's all I got to say about it.
- 31:20I guess you got there.
- 31:22It's not even about that. It's about comic books.
- 31:25So my final thought is,
- 31:28OK, so I did try to write down quotes, but then I did not.
- 31:32Fine. So I am.
- 31:34It's a very Nick thing.
- 31:35I do remember laughing out loud, which I don't normally do.
- 31:38Like normally I laugh inside really hard and I look like I'm grouchy
- 31:41on the outside when I'm thinking something's funny.
- 31:43But this movie did make me laugh out loud and I do not remember why.
- 31:48Good. But I do remember the Wayne quote and that was pretty good.
- 31:51That was probably classic.
- 31:52Best like comedic scene.
- 31:54Yeah. Where she just really wants it. Yeah.
- 31:58He looks so uncomfortable in that, too.
- 32:01You mean in your course.
- 32:06Yeah. Boy, how about that commercial, though?
- 32:10Just the the crazy Charlie commercial crushing Fortune Cookies.
- 32:16It's so weird and like micro racist.
- 32:21Yeah, just like the micro aggression.
- 32:23Yeah. And the voice.
- 32:24But still, it's like he doesn't dress up.
- 32:27He just does like a weird, like I think there's a sort of Chinese voice
- 32:32crushing fortune cookies.
- 32:34I do like the connective tissue for these is that we have two furniture salespeople.
- 32:39Oh, I don't even think of that.
- 32:41Nathan, Arizona and crazy Charlie.
- 32:43Was that by design or it's the way that we set the bracket
- 32:47was based on aggregate ratings.
- 32:50And then how it all flows is just what we decide.
- 32:53So circumstantial, we usually find weird circumstantial connections.
- 32:57Yeah, there's there's a lot of like overlapping actors or themes
- 33:01or things that just kind of like, oh, interesting.
- 33:03I forgot that that is a piece of this.
- 33:05Right. OK, so furniture salesmen.
- 33:07Yes. So is that is that our segue?
- 33:10No, because we're going to go to the Venn diagram for. Oh, yeah.
- 33:15No, we're going to burn that good segue.
- 33:19Now you got to do another one. Oh, so the audience can also be mean
- 33:26with that conjunction.
- 33:27There's no laugh. There's no laugh on here, which I'm like, oh, wait,
- 33:30what are your options?
- 33:31That's because I bought it for you and your jokes.
- 33:34Hey.
- 33:37I thought it was an audience thing.
- 33:39There's applause back. It's rim shot and boo.
- 33:42Dang. Wait, what's the rim shot?
- 33:45Oh, that is the rim shot. OK, gotcha.
- 33:47Oh, yes. So on the Venn diagram of good movie, good cage, bad movie,
- 33:52bad cage, good, bad, bad, good.
- 33:54Oh, this film and Nicholas Cage's performance in it.
- 33:59Oh, man. And do I can I do gradations or is it just.
- 34:03Oh, yeah, we always it's a little bit.
- 34:05So Venn diagram, I would say for good movie, bad movie, I'd have it like
- 34:09on the bad side of the axis, but not like too far down.
- 34:12Like, it's not a terrible movie.
- 34:13And also, I know I'm just someone's crying right now that I'm saying this.
- 34:17But like I have it like a little bit down on bad movie.
- 34:21And then Nicholas Cage, I'd say same,
- 34:24like a little bit on like the bad part of the axis.
- 34:28I'm willing to say that it's a good movie because
- 34:32it's just sort of a timeless 80s sort of romp.
- 34:36It's not poorly written.
- 34:38It's kind of dicey in a lot of the acting, but it's entertaining.
- 34:43It moves well.
- 34:44I didn't have any trouble with the runtime on it.
- 34:46I didn't feel like it came out at 220.
- 34:48I it's a good hour and a half for me.
- 34:51And well, you know, it's got some good Nicholas Cage.
- 34:54He does. He does the voice that I love.
- 34:58Second favorite Nicholas Cage voice.
- 35:00Oh, yeah, you know, I enjoy it every time.
- 35:03It's a good good for me.
- 35:05I think it's a weird good for me.
- 35:06Yeah, I think I turned the corner on this movie this time.
- 35:09I think that I like the movie way more than the first time I watched it.
- 35:13The first time I was just like, what the fuck is this thing? Yeah.
- 35:16And I enjoyed it this time.
- 35:17I'm going to put it into the kind of good and a good cage.
- 35:22Yeah, same. I liked it more on rewatching.
- 35:25And I do think the there are parts where it does kind of drag a little bit,
- 35:29but I feel like the editing on this is pretty tight.
- 35:32There isn't a lot of wasted time in it, especially for a movie of this time.
- 35:36Where things kind of scenes tend to sit a little too long.
- 35:39I think this one is cut pretty well.
- 35:42I would assume so, since they cut out entire storylines.
- 35:45So and I. Sorry, Dolores.
- 35:50And I really do enjoy Nicolas Cage and this he's doing what he does best,
- 35:54which is committing to a bit.
- 35:56I put it fine movie.
- 35:59Good cage.
- 36:00And a vamp for a second.
- 36:03Wackety, schmackety do.
- 36:09So I.
- 36:10I picked it up and I was like, oh, man, this looks like a classic wine cooler.
- 36:14I bet Sean's bitch ass will enjoy this.
- 36:18No, no, I I tried to find something that I thought you'd like.
- 36:23Look at you with your thoughts and feelings.
- 36:25Yeah, you know, I go out of my way to get you a sparkling rose.
- 36:28I better get something good for Sean. I know, right?
- 36:32Oh, it's good. I'm excited.
- 36:36I've got a Rico's gift out in my car, too,
- 36:40because I keep like not having it with me when I see him.
- 36:43So now it's like, oh, I got to. What about Hayden's birthday gift?
- 36:45Oh, that's safe at home.
- 36:47What's Hayden's birthday gift?
- 36:48I'm not going to put this in the podcast.
- 36:50So a couple of years, like years ago, I bought him a bottle of bod black.
- 36:56Oh, I do remember this.
- 36:58Eventually, I'm going to expand it.
- 37:00I want to get two more bottles and then I'm going to make a shadow box
- 37:04with a little inset sections for the three bottles of bod body spray
- 37:09and like do a felt lining around the foam that holds it and everything.
- 37:13So he's got like a real classy display for bod body spray.
- 37:18I think I have I teach some private students
- 37:21and in middle school and high school, and I'm pretty sure that
- 37:25at least one of the high school boys uses I don't know if it's bod body spray,
- 37:29but it's some like probably like acts or something.
- 37:32It might be acts, but it's like a thing. Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:34Like, she's a boy. It is.
- 37:37You don't have to shower. You don't shower.
- 37:39I mean, you have to be like, let's be real.
- 37:42You still have to shower.
- 37:44But all the middle schools out there listening right now,
- 37:47you still have to shower. Trust me. Take a shower, please. Yeah.
- 37:51But no, I was just surprised that bod body spray still existed
- 37:55because I remembered it from the early 2000s or whatever.
- 37:58And it just being like that squirt spray bottle thing.
- 38:03It's still exactly the same.
- 38:05Has not changed.
- 38:06Did you use it in middle school?
- 38:07No, I did not. I knew one person who had used it.
- 38:12I had some college friends who were the Axe body spray types, but no, no, no.
- 38:15Bod users. No, I admit that the Bruce Campbell
- 38:20Oh, God, old spice commercials worked on me.
- 38:23So I bought the Ahoy body spray. Nice.
- 38:27Do you still use the old spice?
- 38:29OK, just checking.
- 38:32Yeah, what's what's your scent right now?
- 38:35Oh, natural. Nice.
- 38:37It's the best one.
- 38:38Rachel approves some doctor.
- 38:40Dr. Bronner's a big jug of that.
- 38:43My mother had to like deodorant crystal.
- 38:48I don't know. Have you seen those?
- 38:49I used to use that and it does not work.
- 38:52I was going to say that sounds fucking fake as shit.
- 38:54Does not work.
- 38:55I think the salts are supposed to rock under your butt. Right.
- 38:58It's like, OK, in theory, you rub the salts,
- 39:01like get into your pores and block the.
- 39:03Right. That's the theory.
- 39:05But it doesn't. Yeah, it doesn't really fly like that.
- 39:08I just have a weird like armpit rock. Yeah, exactly.
- 39:13What's this rock?
- 39:14Oh, that's the one I rub under my armpits.
- 39:17Pre-workout. Yeah.
- 39:18This is my post-workout rock.
- 39:21Fucking crystal shit.
- 39:23Quite Benjamin Franklin Gates update.
- 39:25He's not stealing declarations, but he is stealing my slippers.
- 39:27Yeah, I will leave the room.
- 39:28I start somewhere.
- 39:29I will leave the room for a second and both my slippers will be in his bed.
- 39:32How are his butt worms? Better. Good.
- 39:35Yeah, puppies get worms. Yeah.
- 39:37I don't know. I I was.
- 39:39That just reminded me of a story from childhood that my mom was like,
- 39:43Oh, yeah, you know, kids get worms, too.
- 39:45And like you have to like go into a dark room and shine a flashlight
- 39:48and then you can see them.
- 39:49It's like, pardon.
- 39:52That's what you could do in that dark corner. Yeah.
- 39:55Fine work. Hayden's dark corner.
- 39:58It's where we deworm our friends
- 40:01or at least just observe the worms. Yeah.
- 40:02And I'm doing it. Oh, confirmed. You got it.
- 40:06I kind of want to set up like a
- 40:09a gynecologist chair in that back area with the stirrups and everything.
- 40:12And then I can come in with
- 40:14like blacksmith tongs and like just reach in and like grab the worm.
- 40:19And one at a time. Yeah.
- 40:20One at a time. Yeah, that's the way to do it.
- 40:22Well, I don't trust myself to try to grab two. No, no.
- 40:27Get out of this one, Sean.
- 40:28Now, yeah, what's this? What's this segue into raising Arizona?
- 40:33Raising Arizona.
- 40:35A movie. Funny that you mentioned that.
- 40:38It's the next movie we're talking about.
- 40:41Where Nicolas Cage plays H.I.
- 40:43McDonough, who's falls in love with Lady Cop.
- 40:47Yeah, Edwina. Edwina. What a name.
- 40:49Oh, yeah. They try and have kids can't have kids.
- 40:52So she quits the force and they kidnap a kid.
- 40:55And this movie has just the best cast.
- 40:59It really does.
- 41:01No one is thinking about Edwina cry.
- 41:03We like my finance broke up with me.
- 41:07I find that was a big.
- 41:10Yeah, I love this movie.
- 41:12It's super stupid and funny.
- 41:14It Nicholas Cage has never been more animated than this one.
- 41:18I think it's the perfect role for him comedically.
- 41:23It kills me.
- 41:25I think just his fucking face is that he makes it so good.
- 41:29And his wild rooster hair.
- 41:31I think the thing that was the big takeaway for us,
- 41:34the for me, the first time we watched this movie was that talking to you guys
- 41:38afterwards, you were like, it's a cartoon.
- 41:40It's a cartoon movie with live action.
- 41:42It was like, oh, fuck.
- 41:44OK, now I get it.
- 41:46And watching it the second time, I was like, yeah.
- 41:48No, I mean, because, yeah, we talked about that the first time.
- 41:50It's like it took me about halfway through the movie to realize
- 41:52what I was watching.
- 41:55This is this is Looney Tunes.
- 41:56This is a cartoon like that.
- 41:59I love Gail when they leave the baby on the roof and then they realize it.
- 42:04And so you have to like they're just screaming and they turn around.
- 42:07They're just screaming all the way back.
- 42:09And I've been punching. It's just so like how many times did the baby get left?
- 42:14Like that should have been a drinking game of like every time the baby's left behind.
- 42:18Oh, not that much drinking then, I guess.
- 42:20Depends on what you're drinking.
- 42:21Yeah, one.
- 42:25Got to knock the entire bottle back.
- 42:28As soon as drinking most of a bottle of 151 in a night, I would not recommend it.
- 42:32OK, I think the only times I've drank it, I ended up pulling the shower,
- 42:36or the towel rack off of my girlfriend's bathroom wall.
- 42:39But it's because you wanted to do something with it.
- 42:41Oh, no, I just lost my balance while I was peeing.
- 42:44And I grabbed the towel rack and pulled that off.
- 42:46And then I peed on everything.
- 42:48This is a cautionary tale.
- 42:50Luckily, there were towels at hand for any children listening.
- 42:53Don't drink one. Don't drink one.
- 42:55But when the towels ones that you had already peed on are not at that point,
- 42:58they were behind me until thank until.
- 43:02I do love like he is so there's no at least like the way that I was.
- 43:08There's no point in the movie where his character is trying to be funny.
- 43:11He's like so deeply sincere and earnest
- 43:14and like just becomes like so ridiculous through that wonderful.
- 43:18Kind of like just it's just like that straight man.
- 43:20He's kind of the straight man in this.
- 43:22Like Edwina is the crazy one.
- 43:24She's also like that.
- 43:25I mean, she's never like trying to crack a joke or even slightly
- 43:28anything other than just deeply earnest.
- 43:31Well, it's a Cohen brothers.
- 43:32So it's that largely like slice of life comedy of errors type situation.
- 43:37Yeah. We're like no one realizes there in a comedy in this comedy. Right.
- 43:41Less murder in this one than like Fargo.
- 43:44Yes. That's a very murdery movie.
- 43:46I had to explain some murders.
- 43:48I do a lot.
- 43:50I do explain to someone at Christmas dinner that like the movie Fargo
- 43:53and the show Fargo aren't based on like real stories.
- 43:57They thought we.
- 43:58This is Christmas dinner.
- 43:59Come on. Yeah.
- 44:00It's like I can't really set it, but someone's like, you know, well,
- 44:03you know, these are all real murders.
- 44:04I'm like, no, they're not.
- 44:06But it says they are.
- 44:07I'm like, yeah, but they're not like the Cohen brothers have like said several
- 44:11times, like we don't know why people think this is a real story.
- 44:14Like maybe because you start your movie with based on real events.
- 44:19Which really all you need is to protect the like the living.
- 44:22All you really need for that is like there were two people once.
- 44:25Yeah. And then there was one person.
- 44:28North Dakota has seen a murder.
- 44:31So Alex, you had not seen raising Arizona.
- 44:34No, I hadn't.
- 44:35And I know I've heard about it and I think I've had the chance to see it
- 44:38and just, you know, possibly on planes or, you know, like it's.
- 44:41But I just have never thought about it.
- 44:43And I actually think I get it confused with them.
- 44:46Isn't there another like people kidnap a kid
- 44:49that has like Goldie Hawn in it?
- 44:52Yeah, baby. Oh, no, Goldie.
- 44:54Is this sound familiar at all? OK.
- 44:56So Goldie Hawn like gets amnesia.
- 44:57I think she's like a wealthy person that falls off a boat
- 44:59and she gets found by a guy who needs like a mom for a bunch of kids that he has.
- 45:04And so he like kidnaps her and she thinks that this is her.
- 45:08It's a totally different story. I'm not realizing, but that is why.
- 45:11You guys have not heard of this movie.
- 45:13I think it's called like Overboard or.
- 45:15Oh, never mind. Yeah.
- 45:17You know what I'm talking about, right?
- 45:18I know it because Joe, my girlfriend, watches it all the time. OK.
- 45:21So maybe not all the time, but she's definitely seen it.
- 45:24This is a thing, right? I'm assuming.
- 45:26So somehow I sort of like overlap those movies and thought
- 45:29because I have seen Overboard and I somehow thought, I don't know why,
- 45:33because clearly this is a completely different movie.
- 45:34I had not seen it to answer your question.
- 45:36Have you ever seen Splash? Yes. OK.
- 45:38Another is that another Amnesia movie?
- 45:40No, but it's got a mermaid and there's water involved.
- 45:43Yeah, I have seen that.
- 45:44OK, what other movies can we remember that exists?
- 45:46What other movies are there?
- 45:49But what is a movie?
- 45:53I did like love this movie so much, and I think part of it is.
- 45:57Well, I was surprised because I didn't know anything about it
- 45:59and like all the different people that showed up like John Goodman
- 46:02and like, you know, just like different characters that I was like,
- 46:04what are you doing in this movie?
- 46:05And then he's like climbing out of the mud like a weird primordial creature.
- 46:09And he's also like the most evil character in the movie,
- 46:12I feel like is kind of John Goodman or not evil, but he's like the most sinister.
- 46:16Yeah, he does sinister really well.
- 46:18He really does. And that was awesome.
- 46:20But fight in the trailer.
- 46:23The two big guys in the small space fight. Yeah.
- 46:26But I just like loved that everybody.
- 46:29Everyone had all these like not like totally sinister intentions,
- 46:33but some people did.
- 46:34But then in the end, everyone was just like totally like Gaga over the baby,
- 46:37which I thought was so funny, including especially the two dudes.
- 46:40I forgot the other guy that's
- 46:41moving for safe. Yeah.
- 46:43Like that they're just like emotionally wrecked by the baby in the end.
- 46:46And like originally they were going to turn it in for the ransom, right?
- 46:49They're like, we're keeping him forever or whatever.
- 46:51Like they just like lost it within 15 minutes.
- 46:53Yeah, probably Nathan Jr.
- 46:55is a great little baby, the best baby.
- 46:58I mean, he was the most cheerful baby I've ever seen.
- 47:00So rewatching it this time,
- 47:04their crime of passion quickly turned into like a premeditated thing
- 47:07because there's the announcement of the Arizona like quints.
- 47:13But by the time they get around to kidnapping them, they're toddlers.
- 47:15They're crawling. Oh, good point.
- 47:17That's a really important factor, right?
- 47:20Yeah, they are mobile.
- 47:22Nine months, 10 months, something like that.
- 47:25It's like you took your time.
- 47:26Yeah, they took their time, which I don't think you're supposed to think about.
- 47:29But the other thought that goes there, if it's an immediate thing, is
- 47:33Mrs. Arizona is like bottom half is just gone.
- 47:38Oh, from giving birth to five babies.
- 47:40Five babies the size of like
- 47:43those are big toddlers. Yeah, that's true. Good point.
- 47:47I mean, she walked up those stairs.
- 47:49Robotic spider legs is all she has left.
- 47:52That's probably like Darth Maul.
- 47:53Like Darth Maul. Yeah.
- 47:55Starting nerdy step so yeah. Yeah.
- 47:57God, that's that might actually be true.
- 48:00I mean, we talked about two Marvel movies.
- 48:04Well, Disney movies.
- 48:06Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider, too.
- 48:10Spirit of Vengeance.
- 48:11Yeah, those are Marvel.
- 48:12Oh, I thought you were talking about on this episode.
- 48:15No, we could talk about those if you'd like.
- 48:17Yeah, you go back to what are what are all the movies that there are.
- 48:21I mean, Ghost Rider does reference this movie in it.
- 48:24Does it when he first ghost writers out, he's going through the desert.
- 48:27Yeah, when Leonard Smalls is driving through and he shoots the
- 48:30the lizard and Ghost Rider like burns a guana.
- 48:34That's right.
- 48:35Man, let's talk about Leonard Smalls for a second.
- 48:37Yes. What a great character.
- 48:39I love just his inclusion in this because he has almost no point.
- 48:43It's like he's here as like a bounty hunter to find the babies.
- 48:49He got brought into the purpose.
- 48:51He got brought in to find the escaped convicts right first.
- 48:54Yeah. Yeah. Is that right?
- 48:56And then how did he get on the babies?
- 48:58I don't know. Easy money. Baby money.
- 49:00No, I think he was looking for the baby before he was
- 49:04before he approached Leonard or Nathan, Arizona.
- 49:08Yeah. Well, Nathan, Arizona hadn't put out the bounty yet.
- 49:12But like, hold on.
- 49:13Let's stop. Watch the movie and get this.
- 49:15Yeah, all right.
- 49:16Yeah, it doesn't have a lot to say, but sure.
- 49:20Causes a lot of trouble.
- 49:21Yeah. And going out with a grenade
- 49:25on his best is just terrific.
- 49:27I like how he's trying to like gently put both shotguns down before he goes.
- 49:30So the fingers are stuck in the trigger guards
- 49:32and he doesn't have like one hand to get the other one out.
- 49:35So he's just like, hello.
- 49:38Trying to little flippy hands to get him out.
- 49:41And I liked is it H.I. Yeah.
- 49:45He's like, quiet apology as he's watching an avid.
- 49:48I'm sorry. So cute.
- 49:51He's like a little sensitive soul.
- 49:52He really is.
- 49:54I think my favorite I know this is not the most important part of the movie,
- 49:58but the thing that made me laugh the hardest was the old man in the bank.
- 50:01He's like, which is it?
- 50:03Like, are we laying down or are we holding still?
- 50:05I think. And then when there he's like, where's the tellers?
- 50:08And they're like, we're here.
- 50:09Like, it's just the whole thing like was so badly planned.
- 50:11And he's like, OK, we're about to start this robbery.
- 50:14You know, like they just every step of that robbery was so fucking funny.
- 50:17Like, do you want us to freeze or do you want us to lay down?
- 50:20Because we lay down because if we freeze, we can lay down.
- 50:24But if we lay down, we're in motion.
- 50:26We're in motion. So good.
- 50:28I know that whole scene was like, was my favorite, I think.
- 50:31Oh, the chase scene when he like robs the.
- 50:35Oh, with the guy with the Magnum gun or whatever.
- 50:38Yeah. When he robs the store for the the diapers.
- 50:40Yeah. Diapers and everything in the cash register.
- 50:44And then that prolonged chase sequence where the cops just show up shooting.
- 50:47Yeah, that was amazing. And continue in the grocery store.
- 50:50Just like and then the the dogs are what get me in the chase.
- 50:54And it's like you've got this whole dog chase going on as well.
- 50:57And now you've just got bystanders getting chased by dogs.
- 51:01Yeah. Those dogs are having a great time.
- 51:04And what a great time.
- 51:05I just like how he's addicted to like robbing convenience stores.
- 51:10Start driving by convenience stores that aren't even on the way home.
- 51:14You all got to wait. Well, right.
- 51:17I mean, a great white jag.
- 51:18Great. Everyone's got their great white jag.
- 51:21I absolutely love this movie. It's so much fun.
- 51:25Yeah, I agree. It's a highly entertaining and engaging.
- 51:30Easy to watch.
- 51:31So for you guys on a rewatch, was there any, you know, discovery?
- 51:36Was there anything that came out of this that you missed or just found funnier or?
- 51:42You know, it's really hard to answer that question because it's been a year.
- 51:45I know, right?
- 51:47But I did enjoy it.
- 51:48I didn't I didn't feel less inclined to laugh.
- 51:53I probably enjoyed it more going back to like being in the proper headspace
- 51:58for what I was about to watch.
- 51:59Well, yeah. Last year, when you watched it, you were like half of the movie.
- 52:04You were frustrated by it.
- 52:05And then you were like, oh, wait, I understand it. OK, I get it.
- 52:08So that was a lot. Now you're just on board. Yeah.
- 52:11Yeah, I love I just imagined like an actual review and quotes
- 52:15like on the trailer that's like I was less inclined
- 52:19till wait less inclined to not laugh.
- 52:21You were not. I was not less inclined to laugh on the second viewing.
- 52:25It's like that's the full quote.
- 52:27That's a pretty good review.
- 52:28Actually, put that in fucking light.
- 52:31You can put anything I say on a marquee and it's just gold.
- 52:36It's best if it's like an audio marquee.
- 52:38So it's like his voice.
- 52:39Yeah, there's just a speaker out on the corner of a building
- 52:42and you have to hear me.
- 52:43But then it's got like subtitles because this is Washington
- 52:46and we have to have subtitles for the hearing impaired.
- 52:49Yeah. Respect that. Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:52I wish they could feel my voice the way everybody else has to hear it.
- 52:56But we can really base it up. Yeah.
- 53:00Base it up.
- 53:02I think that's actually the opposite of the problem.
- 53:05Like it just has to be some kind of piercing note
- 53:08or maybe marbles.
- 53:10Just leave marbles on a sidewalk.
- 53:12Let the deaf people walk across it and they'll understand
- 53:16the trials and tribulations that everybody else has to endure.
- 53:20Well put of my audio.
- 53:21Now we're going to put that as our tagline.
- 53:24Yeah, that'll reel them in for sure.
- 53:27Yeah. Hey, deaf people, come listen to this podcast.
- 53:30Step on these marbles.
- 53:31You get the vibe.
- 53:32Hey, actually, we probably should be providing
- 53:36a full transcription of our podcast.
- 53:39We do. What deaf people can read what I say.
- 53:42Yeah, I'm sorry, deaf people.
- 53:44I've probably said a lot of terrible things.
- 53:47Yeah, there's always a transfer.
- 53:49Oh, where do I get that?
- 53:51But and this is episode 41. You're just learning about.
- 53:53I didn't know a lot of stuff that I do that they don't know.
- 53:56We don't want to know how the sausage can I comment on the transcription?
- 53:59No, it's I mean, it's an AI generated thing that I just click a button for it.
- 54:03I don't try hard.
- 54:04All right, deaf people.
- 54:05So anything that's like horribly like abhorrent that we've said, the AI said it.
- 54:09Yeah, but everything that's really horny definitely said.
- 54:12Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 54:14We take credit for that. Yeah. Yeah.
- 54:16So good cage, good movie, bad cage, bad movie, good, bad, bad, good.
- 54:21I would say, OK, good cage.
- 54:24Oh, yeah. Good cage. Good movie is my take.
- 54:28Same. Definitely enjoyed this way more on my second time in a year and a half.
- 54:33Podcast life. Yeah.
- 54:36My real life podcast.
- 54:37Well, you could remember that wife and baby.
- 54:41Yeah, sorry.
- 54:43I love this movie. It's a lot of fun.
- 54:45It's a good movie. It's a good cage.
- 54:48It's top notch. Yeah.
- 54:50He's so charming and fun and this and I love everything about it.
- 54:55Oh, yeah. The music.
- 54:56I guess we didn't really talk too much about that, but yeah, music's great.
- 55:00I didn't even notice the music.
- 55:01I got to watch it again. Yeah.
- 55:03Watch it again. The music, I think, really, really fills it out.
- 55:06And it's all like just a random yodeling cowboy kind of sound.
- 55:11It's good. But it fits. Yeah.
- 55:14So, yeah, the big decision now.
- 55:18This is going to be a tough one. Clearly, it's super tough.
- 55:21And Alex, unfortunately, your vote doesn't matter,
- 55:23but you do get to still say it on microphone.
- 55:25Oh, oh, I get to vote.
- 55:27But just it's sort of like a honorary vote. Yeah.
- 55:30OK, it's really so the Internet knows your opinion.
- 55:33OK, which is something I deeply invested in.
- 55:36At you. Great.
- 55:38OK, and I'll just like spell out my emails.
- 55:40Feel good. Right to me.
- 55:41And we'll start a little debate.
- 55:42I would vote strongly for raising Arizona,
- 55:45but I'm not going to try to financially influence anyone else here.
- 55:50Now, that was my vote.
- 55:51I'm going to need financial influence.
- 55:53Who's going to change? I have a grease that palm.
- 55:57OK, all right. You check later.
- 55:59Excellent. We need that big Cohen money.
- 56:01Yeah, I gladly accept blank checks anytime.
- 56:06This is a raising Arizona for me, for sure.
- 56:08It's I mean, kind of a no brainer this time.
- 56:11Well, this is we're in comedy, right? Yeah.
- 56:16This is tough guy, actually.
- 56:17He's a criminal. He is a criminal.
- 56:20No, I mean, we've talked before that his comedies aren't the most comedic.
- 56:26Yeah, I don't know if the roles that he gets for comedies a lot
- 56:30in his earlier career really like highlighted his ability.
- 56:36Yeah. As well as this or say some of his
- 56:40more recent works like Renfield being an action comedy or unbearable weight.
- 56:46Wait, did you vote, Peter?
- 56:48It doesn't matter.
- 56:49You're only a little opinion.
- 56:50We don't we don't count.
- 56:52I'm only a tiebreaker.
- 56:53Wait, that's all I was going to say.
- 56:55Wait, so and has it been a controversial decision in other only rounds?
- 56:59No, two times.
- 57:00I've had to be a tiebreaker.
- 57:01No, I came I came around on Nick's reasoning for Army of One.
- 57:06No, no, I had to tiebreak another one.
- 57:08And the one you had to tiebreak was Primal versus.
- 57:11And then recently there was another one.
- 57:13What's that? I've already forgotten.
- 57:14It was in season two.
- 57:15So I don't remember.
- 57:18OK, here's a question based on all of the movies you viewed.
- 57:21If I'm going to do another Nicolas Cage movie sometime in the next two weeks,
- 57:24what would you recommend?
- 57:26I have any does not become.
- 57:28So what kind of vibe do you want?
- 57:29I think I'd go I'd be interested in a more serious Nicolas Cage vibe.
- 57:33But it doesn't have to be action, but maybe more like or could be.
- 57:37OK, well, one person gets to say pig and then two other people
- 57:40have to choose other movies.
- 57:41OK, it's a fun big pig.
- 57:43I will say there's a movie called Joe Joe that is very well done.
- 57:48OK, and it's a very thoughtful performance and it's a it's a good movie.
- 57:52OK, so pig Joe, is this all going to be one syllable movie titles?
- 57:57We'll find out. Yeah.
- 57:59Doesn't have to be the bringing out the dead.
- 58:02Oh, good call. Bringing out the dead. OK.
- 58:04That's that's the Scorsese and it's it's a very good.
- 58:07Yeah. OK, great.
- 58:08Don't watch it if you're like upset about anything.
- 58:11Like I'm good.
- 58:12Watch it. We're in a pretty neutral.
- 58:14Yeah, is it? Yeah.
- 58:15He's a is it a zombie thing?
- 58:17No, he's a paramedic.
- 58:19Oh, I think all three of those movies are kind of on 90s New York. OK.
- 58:23They could be. You could you could have a reaction to either of those movies.
- 58:26OK, if you want to see a film that he got this role
- 58:30because of Peggy's, you got married Moonstruck.
- 58:32Oh, I see Moonstruck.
- 58:34Yeah, I forgot he was in that.
- 58:35We share very outlandish like, you know, my hand.
- 58:41My wife. Yeah, share wanted him for this movie after Peggy's
- 58:45got married because she was like, we need somebody who can play crazy
- 58:48and Nicholas Cage is fucking insane. Yeah.
- 58:50They had screen tested a bunch of people and she was like, no, no, no.
- 58:53Get that guy. She's going to walk.
- 58:55They like higher than Cage. Yeah.
- 58:57OK, I'll watch that again at some point, too.
- 58:58I just I totally forgot he was in it.
- 59:01There's a whole racket on our website. Yeah.
- 59:04That fun is one of my favorite
- 59:07top level domain names.
- 59:09Why the fuck not?
- 59:10Got fun. Yeah.
- 59:12Great. Let's everybody know what we're all about.
- 59:14Yeah. Yeah.
- 59:15Dot funny. There's no question.
- 59:17No question. Gooning and that fun.
- 59:19No, we're not going.
- 59:20We're not going to say that.
- 59:22Stop. Fuck you.
- 59:26Hey, man, I'm not the one who named our podcast network.
- 59:29I blame Sean for that one.
- 59:30It was it was a different time. Yeah.
- 59:33Yeah. Different simpler.
- 59:34Like I was season one, like way back. Yeah.
- 59:39Alex does have to go soon.
- 59:41So do you have anything you want to plug or share with our audience?
- 59:44Oh, OK, I could. Yeah, it's great.
- 59:48OK, well, let's see.
- 59:49If you like experimental viola chamber pot music, then
- 59:56you could check out my band.
- 59:57It's called Led to see L.E.D. T.O.S.E.A.
- 1:00:00All those words could be spelled multiple ways.
- 1:00:01So it's great for radio.
- 1:00:03Like Sean. It's like Sean.
- 1:00:06But yeah, I play around town sometimes.
- 1:00:07And I'd love to see you at a show or you can check out my band cam.
- 1:00:11What is chamber pot music?
- 1:00:13Because I know you say chamber pot.
- 1:00:14That's what you said. That's what I heard. Oh, fuck. OK.
- 1:00:17I have a I'm kind of like I used to have a tongue ring.
- 1:00:20And I think that has forever
- 1:00:22caused me to have some weird speech impediment. OK.
- 1:00:25But what I meant to say was chamber pop music.
- 1:00:28But I'm now curious.
- 1:00:29I might try to write my next song in the style of chamber pot music,
- 1:00:33because that actually sounds awesome.
- 1:00:34Old timey poo that you throw out the window.
- 1:00:36It's like there's a lot of like kind of subtle splashing or just like,
- 1:00:39I don't know. Well, I'll see what happens with it. But yeah, I like subtle splashing.
- 1:00:45It's going to be my next album. Yeah.
- 1:00:47The subtle splashing.
- 1:00:49Well, fuck. Thank you all for listening.
- 1:00:50Thanks for being here, Alex. Thank you very much.
- 1:00:52Thank you for having me. This was so fun. Yeah.
- 1:00:54It's a good entry into the world of the podcast.
- 1:00:56So thank you. Excellent.
- 1:00:58Now you can go on to be in a good podcast.
- 1:01:00No, I don't think that's a good choice for me.
- 1:01:02Now stick with us. This is my level right here.
- 1:01:04Yeah. Stick in the chamber pot better.
- 1:01:06We are on social media at Cage,
- 1:01:11Match, Pod or Cage underscore match underscore pod.

- 1:01:26Awesome. Yeah.
- 1:01:28Hey, get that ruler out, too.
- 1:01:31Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:32Measure the Squatch.
- 1:01:34Wow. That was not as much growth as I expected.
- 1:01:37Well, it's meant to grow over 72 hours.
- 1:01:41Hey, the water is cold.
- 1:01:44Yeah, be kind, Alex.
- 1:01:45I'm sorry. I'm just calling it like I see it.
- 1:01:48It's actually smaller than when it was in.
- 1:01:52I don't think so.
- 1:01:53Get the ruler.
- 1:01:54I need the facts.
- 1:01:57It depends on if you look from the side.
- 1:01:58It looks bigger from the top. It definitely looks smaller.
- 1:02:00Yeah, straight on. It just looks like all.
- 1:02:06Bye bye.
- 1:02:10Wait, yes. Oh, it was precise.
- 1:02:12You measure.
- 1:02:15You knew it was going to be slimy.
- 1:02:17I didn't.
- 1:02:18Have you never grown one of these before?
- 1:02:21Oh, it is a little tiny bit bigger.
- 1:02:23Oh, God, it's got a weird gel around it.
- 1:02:25Wow. This is a fun experiment.
- 1:02:28Yeah, kind of.
- 1:02:30Does it say how long are you supposed to leave it in there?
- 1:02:32Three days. Oh, OK.
- 1:02:33Yeah. So this is just the beginning of it.
- 1:02:35So it's like, do you?
- 1:02:38All right.
- 1:02:39Who? Bye bye.
- 1:02:42Bye bye.
- 1:02:44Bye bye.
- 1:02:56Or if you want to be extra wrong, S.H.O.N.
- 1:03:01I do like to be extra wrong sometimes.
- 1:03:03It really helps when you have people who are touchy about the spelling of their name.
- 1:03:07Yeah.
- 1:03:08I like when someone spells it really weird and really off.
- 1:03:10Yeah. Like with a P.H.
- 1:03:14Chiffon.
- 1:03:15Chavon. What's up, Chiffon?
- 1:03:18That's all I'm going to call you now.
- 1:03:19Chiffon or cow. Yeah, Chiffon.
- 1:03:24Nipples on the batsuit dot com.
- 1:03:25Just you.
- 1:03:27You re-upped. I re-upped.
- 1:03:28I'm never getting rid of that.
- 1:03:29No, you should keep that for you.
- 1:03:30You're going to use that for anything specific or.
- 1:03:33I've owned it for over 20 years now.
- 1:03:34It's just it's just there.
- 1:03:36This sometime the iron is going to be hot.
- 1:03:37Yeah. Time to strike. Yeah.
- 1:03:39I think that moment. Batman.
- 1:03:41Passed when they had nipples on the bat suit.
- 1:03:44Yeah, they're never going to do that again.
- 1:03:46Like that was a protest site at first.
- 1:03:48Yeah. I see. Bring them back.
- 1:03:50Right. Put more nips on those suits.
- 1:03:53I require anatomically correct bat suits.
- 1:03:56Why don't you change get a site that's no nipples on the bat suit?
- 1:03:59A new protest site.
- 1:04:01There aren't enough nipples in the Batman movies.
- 1:04:03That's true. Real or otherwise.
- 1:04:05They're pretty pretty nipple free. Yeah.
- 1:04:07Disappointing.
- 1:04:09Something I hadn't thought about before, but you're absolutely right.
- 1:04:11Yeah. The Bane could have used like nine nipples.
- 1:04:15Like every time he venoms up more nipples, just pop out all over him.
- 1:04:18Like not muscles, but he nips out a dog.
- 1:04:23He's more nipple than man.
- 1:04:26You were raised in the nipples.
- 1:04:29I don't remember that quote.
- 1:04:31I'm not going to try to remember that movie.
- 1:04:33I was born from nipples. There you go.
