- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for September 21, 2026 Surviving the season Knowing when
- 0:06to adapt in marriage Our doctor recently prescribed a milkshake for my wife. Really?
- 0:12Her ongoing medical issues have caused an unhealthy level of weight loss.
- 0:16He prescribed a drug to help her be better able to eat and said to go get the
- 0:20most calorie bang for her buck that she could.
- 0:22I said, a milkshake? He said, exactly.
- 0:25Clearly this is not normal medical advice. It was what was best under the circumstances.
- 0:31We are working to get her the calories she needs in a better way.
- 0:34But for the moment, the doctor was more concerned with calories than nutrition.
- 0:38Sometimes what is normally best practice is not the way to go under the circumstances.
- 0:43This is true for all aspects of life, including our marriages.
- 0:47If Lori decided to live on milkshakes, that would be a problem.
- 0:50When the medical issue is resolved, she needs to return to getting good nutrition.
- 0:55What we are doing now is unusual and only a good choice because of the circumstances.
- 0:59There will be times in your marriage when you can't do what would normally be
- 1:02best There will be times when what is normally expected would be harmful,
- 1:07The trick to dealing with these is twofold First, you have to see the unusual
- 1:11circumstances, what they mean, and how to adapt Second, you have to see when
- 1:15the circumstances have passed So you can return to something more appropriate for most of the time,
- 1:20Some open discussion will help you do this well,
- 1:23My wife has not done any housework for several weeks.
- 1:26That is right, and I'd stop her if she tried. But when this is all over,
- 1:30it would be wrong for her to leave me doing everything.
- 1:33That's not who she is, but new habits form, and she will need to be intentional
- 1:36to return to her old habits.
- 1:38Think about your marriage. Is there an unusual circumstance in your marriage
- 1:42that would benefit from doing something that would normally not be a good idea?
- 1:46Did this happen in the past, but you didn't get back or all the way back to
- 1:49normal when the circumstance passed? I'll give some examples the rest of the
- 1:53week, but I wanted you all to think about your marriage first.
- 1:56This is Paul, and accommodating is doing marriage well.
