Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: On this episode of the Massive Agent Podcast, I'm going to get a little ranty, a little rantastic, if you will.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: We're going to talk about why having success given to you is a bad idea.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Why you want to earn it, why you want to work for it and get success rather than having it handed to you.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: The Massive Agent Podcast.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: We need generation tips and strategies to give you more leads and sell more homes.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: I love to buy houses.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: I like to sell houses.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Wait a minute.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Leads a week.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: That's better.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Oh have I got your attention now?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Here's your host, Dustin Brome.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Hey, what's going on, everybody?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Welcome to episode number 35 of the Massive Agent Podcast.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: I'm Dustin Brome, your host.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: I am a realtor in Salt Lake City, Utah with EXP Realty, the founder of Search Salt Lake and Salt Lake Insider.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: I'm also the founder of the Massive Agent Society.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Find out more about that Legen training system.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Our proprietary, that sounds so official, our exclusive proprietary Facebook ad LEAG Gen training and support system that's called the Massive Agent Society over at MassiveAgent Society.com, and only one agent per market can join.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Needless to say, all my EXP agents that uh that join my EXP team do get membership to that for free, which is super cool, free lifetime membership.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Anyways, let's get into the show.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot of there's this tone in this country, okay, and and I'm not gonna get political, but I'm gonna I'm gonna talk about the you know, just like the underlying tones of what's going on in society, in our culture, in our media, in entertainment, and everything.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: There's there's two different there's two different Americas being formed right now, okay?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And I promise I'm gonna tie this back to business very, very soon, in just a sec.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: But you'll notice there's this movement towards we want free stuff.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: We want stuff given to us.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: We want free this, free that, free the other thing.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And then there's this other kind of opposite uh opposite movement, if you will, or it's not even a movement, they're just saying, hey, wait, hey, you're you're crazy over there.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: That doesn't make sense.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: We want to work for it.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Let's have a meritocracy here.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And so what I'm seeing is there's some there's some agents out there and loan officers where they they kind of just sit back and expect that business comes to them, that it's just gonna be given to them, that it's gonna fall in their lap.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And then there's other agents that they go out and work for it.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: If they don't know how to run Facebook ads, they'll take that bull by the horns and learn it.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: They'll go buy a training course, they'll go hire a coach, they'll go join the Massive Agent Society, they'll go just Google and YouTube stuff.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I learned Facebook ads by watching YouTube videos, by reading articles, and by doing it, by spending thousands of dollars with trial and error learning it.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, and the first you know, honestly, when I look back, even though I didn't I didn't think this at the time, but when I look back at my first thr two or three years in the business, I think I was sitting back waiting for business to come to me because I was not I I was going through the motions, but I wasn't thinking, okay, what's the best way to get clients?
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Do I need to chase them or do I need to attract them?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: To me, it was all the same.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Like I didn't even understand the distinction back then.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: It was just, how do I get business?
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: How is it done?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, I have to go door knocking?
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, I have to send some postcards and some letters, direct mail?
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that there was anything else.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: But what's really unfortunate as I because I've been coaching agents for a few years now, and I've been doing some speaking and training events for agents over the last couple of years, and I'm noticing that there's this, there's like I wouldn't say it's most agents, but there's a hell of a lot of them.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: There's way too many of them that they they want they want this the silver bullet.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Like they want to know what the secret is.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: They're like, hey, what one little tactic can I use that's gonna bring me a flood of business all of a sudden?
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: What what what is it?
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Like, what's that one thing?
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: And I tell them all the time, there is no one thing.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: The one thing, if you want to take a step back and zoom out, if you will, the one thing is that you need to bust your ass doing something that's worth getting good at.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: That's the secret.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: That's the silver bullet.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: But they don't like that because it's not as simple as using, oh, let's use this one hashtag on Instagram and that's gonna rocket me to success.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Or, oh, if I just run this magical Facebook ad over here that that takes me ten minutes to learn and and no more, that I'm gonna be making three hundred grand a year.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: There's so much delusion out there.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: There's so many people that there's I think a lot of it is entitlement.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: They keep hearing about free healthcare, free college education, you know, forgiveness of my student loans, all this horse shit, and then they that fill that gets into their brain and they're like, hmm, yeah, I guess that things should be easy.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: You know, I have this entitlement, I'm entitled to to new business, I'm entitled to be a success as a real estate agent.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you what, I'll make you a little deal.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: If if that's you and you feel that that you're entitled to something in this life, in this business, I want you to double down on that.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's let's just let's keep going down that road.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: I want you to keep doing that.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Let's see how you're doing financially two or three years from now.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Let's see how that works out for you.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: And let me just fast forward for you and and just give you a little preview of what to expect.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Your starving to death is not gonna have anything to do with life being unfair or income inequality or any other horse shit.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be because you are a lazy sack of shit and didn't do the work required to be successful.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Now, I want you to understand me, there are so many different ways that you can be successful.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: There are so many different ways that you can market yourself successfully to bring in new clients and to do it long term, all right, and to to build a real lasting business.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: We've talked a lot about content marketing uh on previous episodes.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: This is not another episode on content marketing.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: It's more of a it's more of a rant on on just this thinking that that somehow it's better to just have business handed to you.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: It's better to just sit back and and have it come to you.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: All right, let me let me do this.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna humor you for a minute, and let's pretend for a second, let's let's put on our our imagination caps for a second and pretend that that actually works.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: That you can just sit back and business is gonna come to you without building a client attraction machine first.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Let's just pretend, okay?
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: If if all of a sudden business starts coming to you, awesome.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: And it just it shows up, and they're like, hey, we want to work with you.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, how'd you find me?
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I don't know, my phone just started dialing.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's say that that works.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Is that good?
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Is that a good way of running a business or building a business or building a life?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Or is it better to work for something?
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Is it better to earn something?
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Here's the difference.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: If you're just if you're just handed clients, oh, and okay, let me put this a different way.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Let's the imagination, that was fun.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: I I enjoyed that little playtime there for a minute.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: But let me put it a different way.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Let's say you are on a you're a member of a team, you're a buyer's agent, and you don't have to ever learn how to market.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: You just show up and leads are given to you, and you ha your job is to call the leads and convert them and then go show them houses and clothes.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: You can make a living.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: You can absolutely make a living, you can pay your bills, you could make a decent living, for sure.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: What happens when those leads dry up?
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: What happens when that team goes out of business, or they have to let you go as a buyer's agent because the economy shifted, and they were they were doing all listings and now there are no listings, or they were doing all buyers and now there are very few buyers.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: When the market changes, the team structure has to change.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: And all of a sudden you're out on your own and you don't have a clue how to get your own clients.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: That's a problem.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Whereas, had you just figured out how to start a blog, how to build a website, how to do some vlogging, how to effectively run Facebook ads, how to do Google AdWords, how to run ads on LinkedIn and Pinterest for God's sakes, but you no, you didn't learn any of that.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Had you just, even though it's harder and it takes longer and costs you some money and some time to get to the point where you can get a steady flow of business, don't you think then with that perspective that it's better to not have business handed to you, that it's better to actually earn it?
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: The reason being is you know how to do it.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Nobody can take away your skill set.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Nobody can take away your base of knowledge of how to get new business, of how to be a marketer and how to attract new clients.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: No one can take that away from you.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: So if you're if you're a buyer's agent on a team and you don't know how to market, if you just if the leads just pop up in your CRM and you're supposed to call them, that's cool.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: But I you're doing yourself a you're really at risk here because like I said, when the economy changes, when the market shifts, if those leads ever dry up, or more likely, they become way too expensive for your team to keep buying and you don't have them anymore, you're screwed.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: You better start learning how to get your own clients right now.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: And I'll give you a couple analogies that that I think that I think you guys will will understand and that will resonate with you.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: So if you're given something, if you're let's say you're given in a course, an online course on how to do YouTube ads or something.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's say there's a course, and one course is free, another course is a thousand dollars.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Which one is better for you?
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, and let me let me qualify that.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Which one is better as far as keeping you keeping you engaged, holding you accountable, and making sure that you actually see it through to the end and then take action on what you've learned?
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Which one's more likely to do that?
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: The free course or the thousand dollar course when the course is exactly the same?
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Obviously, it's the it's the one that you put a thousand bucks into.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Whenever you get something for free, you don't value it as much.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: That's just a fact.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: It's a sad fact, maybe, I guess whatever, but it's a fact.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Something that you get for free, you do not value psychologically the same way as something you had to work to pay for.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Something that you spend a thousand dollars on, you have a you have skin in the game.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: If you put a thousand dollars into something like that, or you hired a coach and it costs you a thousand bucks, let's say it costs you ten thousand dollars for a coach, are you more or less likely to actually do what they say what they recommend you do?
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Are you actually gonna do the homework that they recommend you do?
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Are you actually going to follow the plan they give you versus if you had a coach do it for free?
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Obviously, if you have a if you have ten thousand dollars into it, you take it seriously.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: You're gonna actually do it.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: That's a big deal.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: So when you take the time to learn a new skill, to learn how to run YouTube ads, to do Google AdWords, to do Facebook ads, to do Instagram stories, build a website, whatever it is.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: If you learn that stuff on your own, you know it.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: If somebody just tells you how to do it and you've never actually done it yourself, or maybe it's done for you, you don't have a clue how to do it.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: So that's why I do my own content.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: I do my own websites.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: I know how to do, I know how to build, not start to finish, like I've hired certain parts out of building a website, but I have some WordPress websites that I know how to edit, I know how to change things around, I know how to mess with some of the design a little bit.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: And the reason being is then I have a base of knowledge that then I can go out and hire somebody to do certain aspects of that, but I then I know if they're any good or not.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: If you don't have a clue what you're doing, if you have no expertise on SEO, on graphic design, on content creation, on any of it, you don't have a clue if the person you're hiring is good or not.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: It's always better to work for something, to learn something for yourself.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: So then if you want to hire it out later, awesome.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Then you know who's good and who's not and who you should hire or avoid.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: I think you guys know exactly what I'm talking about here, but I know this has probably stepped on some toes.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Look, it's I think, especially in society, when you hear all this crap in the in the media and in in the Hollywood and everything about just free, you know, hey, we deserve this, we deserve that, this is a right, this is a right.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Well, when that when that thinking takes over, then you start thinking you don't have to work hard for stuff.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Or you start thinking that working hard isn't worth it.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Or, you know, it's better to just like like if you need to know the answer to something, rather than asking somebody and having them telling you, why don't you research it for yourself?
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Then you'll actually contextually know.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Like you'll then you'll you'll know the answer.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: You'll know what's going on rather than just like, hey, what's the answer to this?
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Eh.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: So if any of this is hitting home, if you think that I'm that I'm picking on you, if you think that I'm uh I'm calling you out here, that's a clue then that some of this really needs to be addressed.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: You you really need to take a look in the mirror and make some changes because it's not healthy and it's not gonna serve you long term in your business to continue like phoning it in and not working to understand certain things.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: I was asked just earlier today about, you know, hey, how do I start getting traffic to my website?
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: How do I start showing up in Google's search results?
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Well, there's a lot of work that's gonna go into that.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: A lot of it.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: You're gonna have to start building a base of content, you're gonna have to start building backlinks at the same time.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: A backlink is when other websites link back to you.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: You're gonna have to start getting your content shared on social, Facebook being the big one, and LinkedIn and um, I mean, I guess Twitter, but no one really cares.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: But Pinterest, Pinterest is huge if you're a content creator because on Pinterest, people keep pinning and you actually get more and more traffic as time goes on versus Facebook where it dies, right?
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot of things that you need to learn.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: But once you do, then you know how stuff works.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Then you can take over and say, okay, cool, I'll do this piece of content now and you already know how it fits into the system.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: I'll do this piece of content, you already know how to optimize it and fit it into your system.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: But if you hired everything out, you wouldn't have a clue how to do any of that stuff.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: You wouldn't know what what content to do or how to do it or or how to do it in a way that ranks well on Google.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: You wouldn't have a clue unless you learn how to do it for yourself.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: And to be fair, the person that I'm that I'm talking about right now, they are actively doing this all themselves.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, they're they're not trying to have somebody else do it.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: They're not trying to sit back and have it done for them.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: They are taking the steps necessary to learn how to do it.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: It's just a lot of work and it takes time, but you gotta start now.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: I can't stress this enough, guys.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Look, as of this week, okay, so this came out on Thursday, the 23rd of August.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: As of the 22nd, as of August 22nd, 2018, we will have been in the longest bull run in history, the longest lasting bull market in history now.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: So every day that goes by is borrowed time, if you will.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: It's just a matter of time before the real estate market shifts.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Whether it crashes or just corrects or softens, I don't know.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: But it's definitely not going to stay this way forever.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: That is a fact, and you know it is.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: So really start getting rid of these bad habits.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Start learning, start learning, start uh experimenting.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: And here's what's cool you just take the first step in learning something, and then that once you learn, now you know a little bit more.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: And then you learn about the possibilities, and that might lead to an even better idea or a way to pivot over to the right and do this thing that you didn't even know was a possibility, but now you are, and it brings up new business opportunities and new ways of doing things.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: I promise you, if you just take the first step and try to learn it yourself and get a handle on it yourself, you're going to crush it.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: But you just have to do it long enough.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, thanks for sitting through my little uh my massive rant, if you will.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, guys.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Speaking of rants, I do I do a you know, I do an Alexa flash briefing every day.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: So every once in a while, I'll do a little rant, a little 60 to 90 second rant on my massive agent minute Alexa Flash Briefing.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: So if you have an Alexa device, if you have an Echo or an Echo Dot or an Echo Show or an Echo uh what what are the other ones?
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Or if you have Alexa in your car, like I know BMW and Ford does, you can subscribe to our Massive Agent Minute Flash Briefing.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: You could even do this on Amazon Desktop, on your laptop.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: So every day, seven days a week, I provide a tip, an idea, a strategy, insight, a little rant, a story, a joke, whatever.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Every day.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Massive Agent Minute is what it's called.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Go enable that flash briefing on your Alexa device as soon as possible, please.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: And before I sign off for the day, I know this has been a little uh definitely a shorter episode today, and I apologize, or you're welcome, it just depends on your perspective on that.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: But uh I will mention because this week was a big week for me and exp Realty, uh, we definitely had a few big players actually fill out their applications to switch over and join us, which is super exciting.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: There's there's there's something big going on here, and I'm glad that I joined when I did.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: I wish I would have done it earlier, but what can you do?

- 18:05SPEAKER_00: It's all good.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: But ultimately, you don't want to be the person who puts your head in the sand and says, I'm not open to anything else because that's dumb.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Learn what learn what's going on, and whether it's for you or not, that's up to you.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, but at least you'll know what's going on.
