- 0:00Good morning. I don't know if you realize this
- 0:06or not, but I am not Dwayne Bryant.
- 0:12So Dwayne is teaching this quarter, going through lessons
- 0:15from the Kings. However, he is going to be out
- 0:19both this Sunday and next Sunday due to doing some traveling for
- 0:25spring break, going to visit family and various other things.
- 0:29And so he asked if I would be willing to fill in for him for
- 0:33both this Sunday and next Sunday in his in his class.
- 0:39So what I'm going to endeavor to do today, especially is I'm
- 0:44going to try to get adjacent to some of the things that he's
- 0:47going to be talking about without necessarily stepping
- 0:52into his particular area. So this morning I'd like you to
- 0:56open your Bibles to First Samuel chapter 8.
- 1:01First Samuel chapter 8 is going to be our primary text that
- 1:05we're going to look at today. Of course, when you're talking
- 1:09about the kings and you're talking about all of the things
- 1:12that that are going to happen in Israel as a result of Israel
- 1:17having kings and, and Dwayne started the class by going
- 1:21through and talking about the fact that that God is truly the
- 1:26king of Israel in all of this. He is the one who is in charge.
- 1:30He is the leader who is seeking to guide and to direct the
- 1:34people of Israel in the way that they need to go.
- 1:38But first Samuel chapter 8 is really the the change of
- 1:43direction for Israel in this particular regard.
- 1:48You know, you come out of the judges and you've got a a nation
- 1:53that from the outward eye looks to be in chaos in a lot of
- 1:59different ways. How is it described in the book
- 2:02of Judges as to the way that life is amongst the children of
- 2:06Israel in those days every. Man did.
- 2:10What was right? All right?
- 2:11It is written that there there was no king in Israel in those
- 2:15days, for every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
- 2:20And you know, it doesn't take very long, reading and thinking
- 2:24and considering people's actions to realize that when man gets to
- 2:31decide everything for himself without any help whatsoever, he
- 2:39usually makes the wrong decision.
- 2:42Not always, but quite often. And these people in the days of
- 2:48the judges, you have the generational cycle that we talk
- 2:52about, but many times they're not listening to anybody.
- 2:57They're not going to anybody for advice.
- 2:59That includes God, and especially includes God.
- 3:02They're not listening to what the law says.
- 3:04They're going through and doing the things that they want to do
- 3:08without regard for anything else.
- 3:12And so you have this constant ebb and flow.
- 3:14They'll be, they'll be disobedient for a generation.
- 3:18Then God will bring up a, a conqueror against them who will
- 3:24bring them under their heel for a period of time until they
- 3:28remember who God is. And there will be a generation
- 3:31that turns back to God, and they'll be good for a little
- 3:33while. And then the whole cycle is
- 3:36going to start all over again. As you come into First Samuel,
- 3:43you're still actually in the days of the judges.
- 3:46You know, we often think it's a new book.
- 3:49It's got a new title to it. We're talking about Samuel.
- 3:52We're not talking about the judges anymore.
- 3:54But you know, if you go through the song that the kids learn on
- 3:58the list of the judges, guess who's one of the judges?
- 4:02Samuel. Samuel is going to be the last
- 4:06of the official judges as we generally look at them in
- 4:12Scripture. But Samuel is an interesting
- 4:20story. We're not going to go through
- 4:21everything that happens in Samuel's life, but as you come
- 4:26to First Samuel Chapter 8, Samuel has gotten old at this
- 4:30particular time. Now, old in this particular
- 4:33sense does not necessarily mean that he is ready to die.
- 4:39As a matter of fact, the indication is Samuel is not
- 4:45going to die for another 25 to 30 years after the events of
- 4:50First Samuel Chapter 8. However, he is old enough that
- 4:56his children are grown and he is probably what we would call late
- 5:02middle-aged. At this particular time.
- 5:04He is beyond the age where men would normally serve as a priest
- 5:13or as a particular leader among the people.
- 5:19He would have been of the age of the elders of the people, but
- 5:23not necessarily at the age of general practice, which in the
- 5:28time of Israel was the age of 50.
- 5:32So he is likely over the age of 50, but not yet at the age where
- 5:37he cannot function and he cannot do what needs to be done.
- 5:42But there's going to be some changes that take place.
- 5:45And I want us, our study, to kind of go in two different
- 5:48directions today, or two different parts.
- 5:51I want us to contrast what happens at the start of chapter
- 5:558 with Samuel and his sons with what happens a few chapters
- 5:59earlier in first Samuel chapter 2 with Eli and his sons, because
- 6:05there are some similarities, but there's also some differences in
- 6:08what takes place. And then I want us to look at
- 6:13Israel's reaction to Samuel and how God lays things out to his
- 6:22prophet and priest about what it is that's going on and how
- 6:27things are going to look as we start in first Samuel chapter 8
- 6:34verse one says now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he
- 6:37made his sons judges over Israel.
- 6:40The name of the first born was Joel in the name of the second
- 6:43Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba.
- 6:46But his sons did not walk in his ways.
- 6:49They turned aside after dishonest game, took bribes and
- 6:54perverted justice. Then all the elders of Israel
- 6:57gathered together and came to Samuel at Rhema and said to him,
- 7:01Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways.
- 7:06Now make us a king to judge us, like all the nations.
- 7:12So Samuel is now old. He is of an advanced age.
- 7:20We've followed Samuel's life over the 1st, 7 or 8 chapters of
- 7:26First Samuel from the time that he was born with Hannah in First
- 7:31Samuel chapter 1 and the things that surround his birth, the
- 7:35things that are are going to happen.
- 7:37But now his sons are of age and he is going to make his sons
- 7:44judges over Israel. Well, I thought Samuel was the
- 7:50last judge. So what's going on here?
- 8:03OK, there's the distinction. Samuel was chosen to be a judge
- 8:08by God. Now there are going to be other
- 8:12judges throughout the people and amongst the people.
- 8:15You know, when Moses was leading Israel, his father-in-law is
- 8:22going to come to him on one occasion, Jethro, because Moses
- 8:27is trying to do all of the judging.
- 8:29He's trying to do all of the decision making and all of the
- 8:34legal argumentation for everybody amongst the people of
- 8:39Israel all by himself. And you know what's happening?
- 8:43It's not working out well. You think there's a log jam in
- 8:50our court system? Try getting being the only one
- 8:53who is doing any kind of judicial work for. 6,000,000.
- 8:59People, that's exactly right. It's not going to end well.
- 9:03So what does Jethro tell Moses to do?
- 9:07You need to create a system with judges over all of these
- 9:11different areas. And they do.
- 9:16And that means that Moses is only brought in in the areas
- 9:20that he's really needed to make the determination.
- 9:25Well, there's still the same type of system in place amongst
- 9:29the people. It may not be as formally laid
- 9:33out now that the people are spread out throughout the
- 9:35region, but there are others who serve as judges.
- 9:40And the term here that is used in chapter 8, verse one, carries
- 9:45with it the idea of being a governing official.
- 9:51So Samuel is going to make his sons judges.
- 9:56They are going to be, for lack of better term, governors.
- 9:59They are going to be those who are overseers in matters of the
- 10:03law and of government for the people of Israel down in
- 10:08Beersheba. Well, what's the problem?
- 10:15OK, Just because they're judges doesn't mean they're good
- 10:19judges. The issue with these sons of
- 10:24Samuel is that they did not walk in his ways.
- 10:28They turned aside verse 3 after dishonest gain, took bribes and
- 10:34perverted justice. So these are judges who do not
- 10:41judge righteously. If you can grease the wheels a
- 10:45little bit, you can get the judgment that you were looking
- 10:48for. With Samuel's sons, they are not
- 10:54averse to being underhanded in their determinations.
- 11:01And it doesn't take very long before you get a reputation for
- 11:04those kinds of things, right? They know how to deal with it.
- 11:10Well, the elders are going to go to Samuel and they're going to
- 11:13say, listen, no offense, but your boys aren't like you, so we
- 11:22need somebody else. But it's only been a few
- 11:28chapters since we've read about another set of sons who were not
- 11:33like their father. And God came down really hard on
- 11:37Dad in this particular setting. So I want to take just a few
- 11:42moments to contrast some things between what happens in First
- 11:45Samuel chapter 2 with Eli and his sons, Hofnai Infinihas, and
- 11:51what happens here in First Samuel chapter 8.
- 11:53Because there are many people that will look at it and they'll
- 11:56say, listen, you know, we hear a lot about God being a righteous
- 12:01judge and, and, and God not giving preferential treatment of
- 12:06one person over another person. But here he really socks it to
- 12:10Eli and we don't read about anything like that when it comes
- 12:13to Samuel, what's the difference?
- 12:16Let's look at a couple of things.
- 12:19Go back to first Samuel chapter 2.
- 12:23And in verse 12 we begin to read now the sons of Eli were
- 12:30corrupt. They did not know the Lord and
- 12:34the priest. Custom with the people was that
- 12:36when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest servant
- 12:39would come with a three pronged flesh hook in his hand while the
- 12:43meat was boiling. Then he would thrust it into the
- 12:46pan or kettle or cauldron or pot, and the priest would take
- 12:50for himself all that the flesh hook brought up.
- 12:54So they did in Shiloh. To all the Israelites who came
- 12:57there also, before they burned the fat, the priest's servant
- 13:01would come and say to the man who sacrificed, give meat for
- 13:05roasting to the priest. For he will not take more boiled
- 13:09meat from you, but raw. And if the man said to him, they
- 13:13should really burn the fat first, then you may take as much
- 13:16as your heart desires. He would then answer him, No,
- 13:20but you must give it now, and if not, I'll take it by force.
- 13:24Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the
- 13:28Lord, for men abhorred the offering of the Lord.
- 13:38What are Hofnay and Finnehas doing?
- 13:40They're. Violating.
- 13:43Worship all right? They're stealing from God.
- 13:53They're stealing from God. They serve.
- 13:55The difference #1 between Samuel's sons and Eli's sons is
- 14:00the office that they hold. Eli's sons are priests.
- 14:06As priests, they are directly responsible for the worship that
- 14:11is being brought before God. Samuel's sons are not priests,
- 14:19even though their father is a priest.
- 14:22Samuel's sons are judges, therefore their responsibility
- 14:28are in areas of a civic nature before the people, not
- 14:35necessarily a worship nature before the people.
- 14:42Hofnay Infinihas are acting in such a way that they are
- 14:53destroying the sacrifices that the people are seeking to make
- 14:58to God. They are making it impossible
- 15:03for the people to actually be able to offer these sacrifices
- 15:09according to God's commandments, the way that he said to do it.
- 15:15And on top of that, do the people know that that's what
- 15:19they're doing? Yes.
- 15:22They're not ignorant of this particular command and of what
- 15:27it is that God expects in the way that God tells them to do
- 15:30it. And they're trying to do it
- 15:33right. But these two sons of Eli will
- 15:38not allow them to do it. And it gets to the point it's
- 15:45stated in First Samuel chapter 2 and in verse #17 that men
- 15:52abhorred. Another word that we might use
- 15:57in some translations is despised.
- 16:00It got to the point that the people absolutely despised going
- 16:08to offer sacrifices to God because they knew that they,
- 16:16number one, were going to be cheated and that the sacrifices
- 16:21were not going to be what God wanted them to be.
- 16:28But under the Old Testament law, guess what?
- 16:31They didn't have the freedom to just say, well, the priests
- 16:34aren't doing it right, so I'll just do it myself.
- 16:38We've already had the discussions about Saul and what
- 16:40Saul did when he offered sacrifices himself.
- 16:43Not because Samuel wouldn't do it right, because he didn't wait
- 16:46for Samuel to arrive. But they didn't have the option
- 16:53that if the priest was negligent or if the priest was, as these
- 16:58men were corrupt, to just be able to take on the mantle for
- 17:02themselves and do it the right way by themselves.
- 17:06Because by doing it themselves, they were doing it the wrong
- 17:09way. They're violating another area
- 17:11of the law. So the children of Israel in the
- 17:18days of of Eli and Hofni and Finnehas, they're they're put in
- 17:21a catch 22 situation. If they offer go to the priest
- 17:26to offer sacrifices, the priests are going to cheat them and
- 17:32their sacrifices aren't going to be what God wants them to be.
- 17:35But they can't go offer them themselves because they don't
- 17:39have the right according to the law to do it.
- 17:45So they come to a point where they despise even coming to
- 17:52offer sacrifices to God because they know that no matter what
- 17:57they do, it's not going to come out right.
- 18:06There's a big difference between putting people in the situation
- 18:09where they cannot worship God acceptably and being ones who
- 18:18are corrupt on the civil side of things where you're willing to
- 18:23take bribes in order to put a judgement in somebody else's
- 18:30camp instead of the other guys. Now, does that mean that either
- 18:34one of them was right in what they did, or acceptable in what
- 18:39they did? Nope.
- 18:42But you know, I I often hear people talk about the fact that
- 18:47sin is sin and all sin is the same.
- 18:51There is a sense in which all sin has the same effect in
- 18:55pulling us away from God, but not all sin functions the same
- 19:00way and has exactly the same consequences.
- 19:04And it never has, as far as God is concerned.
- 19:08But there's one other fundamental difference between
- 19:11what happens with Eli and his sons and what happens with
- 19:14Samuel and his sons. Where are Eli's sons doing these
- 19:23things and what would you? Call the church, but it's in.
- 19:29Them all right, so so they're at the Tabernacle as far as that
- 19:32goes. And it's not just the things
- 19:35with the sacrifices they are going to force themselves on the
- 19:44women that are outside the Tabernacle that have come for
- 19:49for worship. According to chapter 2 verses 22
- 19:52and following. They are going to do every
- 19:56conceivable thing that is against the law of God.
- 20:03But guess who's present when all of these things are happening?
- 20:10Eli. You see, it's not just the fact
- 20:14that they did them. Eli is there when all of these
- 20:20things are going on. He's in the exact same place and
- 20:25nothing ever happens to Hofnay and Finneas.
- 20:29He basically looks at them and says, now, boys, you shouldn't
- 20:32do that. But according to the law, what
- 20:38was supposed to happen to priests who acted in such a
- 20:41manner? They were supposed to be stoned.
- 20:47Were Hofni Infinity has stoned? No.
- 20:49Not only were they not stoned, they weren't even removed from
- 20:52their positions. It's allowed to continue on and
- 20:58on and on. And the high priest and the
- 21:02judge is sitting right there while it's all happening and
- 21:06does absolutely nothing about it.
- 21:10Now take that and contrast it with Samuel and his sons.
- 21:17Samuel's sons are given a location where they are going to
- 21:22be judges. Where is that?
- 21:26According to First Samuel chapter 8 and in verse 2,
- 21:32Beersheba. Where is Beersheba?
- 21:40Beersheba is considered to be as far South as you can go and
- 21:44still be in the land of Israel. It is the far southern region.
- 21:51It actually is going to be on the border with Egypt for for
- 21:55much of the existence of of Israel.
- 21:58And so it's as far South as you can get.
- 22:03Well, where is Samuel? If you go back to Chapter 7, in
- 22:13Chapter 7, verses 15 through 17, it says, but Samuel judged
- 22:19Israel all the days of his life. He went from year to year on a
- 22:23circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah and judged Israel in all
- 22:28those places. But he always returned to Rhema,
- 22:31for his home was there. There he judged Israel, and
- 22:36there he built an altar to the Lord.
- 22:39So Samuel's home is in Rhema. Rhema is in central Israel,
- 22:46almost 60 miles north of Beersheba.
- 22:55Hofnay. Infinehaz are destroying the
- 22:59ability of the people of God to worship, and they're doing it in
- 23:03the very presence of Eli, and Eli does nothing about it.
- 23:09Samuel's sons are corrupt judges.
- 23:13They do not do what is right. They do not follow after their
- 23:16father's deeds, but they are living and working in a place
- 23:24miles and miles away from Samuel.
- 23:28Now, that doesn't mean that Samuel cannot and and should not
- 23:32exert influence over his sons, but it does mean that there are
- 23:38levels that Samuel can't necessarily do from Rhema.
- 23:46There are things that he cannot function.
- 23:48You know, he can't call them up on the phone and say, hey, we
- 23:54need to have a chat. There are questions as to
- 24:03whether or not the things that happened when the elders of
- 24:07Israel come to Samuel in verse 4 are the first time that Samuel
- 24:13has heard about the things that are going on down in Beersheba.
- 24:20It's a different set of circumstances.
- 24:23They hold different offices. Their sins are just exactly
- 24:30that. They are sinful.
- 24:32The things that they are doing are wrong, but the impact that
- 24:36they have both on the people and on their relationship with their
- 24:44Father is different. Eli is going to be brought down
- 24:50by God because Eli had sin and wickedness standing right there
- 24:57in front of his face and would not do anything about it.
- 25:02And yet he's supposed to be the spiritual leader of the people,
- 25:06and he was allowing the worship of the people to be distorted
- 25:12and to become abhorrent before God, and he would not take a
- 25:17step to stop it. Samuel is seeking to do God's
- 25:30will in judging the people. He has set up his sons to be
- 25:35judges, but his sons are not good judges, and when he hears
- 25:42that the sons are not good judges, the people have a means
- 25:47of rectifying the situation. Just give us a king because a
- 25:54king will fix everything. A king will make everything
- 26:02better because then he can judge us.
- 26:05Notice the statement in chapter 8 verse 5.
- 26:08Like all the nations roundabout Cliff Evan, I don't know
- 26:13whether. You want to cover this or not,
- 26:18But I wonder why the the sharp difference between and the sun,
- 26:27you know there's more time given and so on.
- 26:32So my only thought on that is, is this.
- 26:38I draw a comparison between what happens with Nadab and Abihue in
- 26:43Leviticus chapter 10 and what happens with Ananias and
- 26:47Sapphira over in Acts chapter 5 and that comparison is this.
- 26:54Both of those events occur right after the establishment of the
- 27:00law, and God is going to set the precedent that these actions
- 27:08will not be acceptable under the law.
- 27:11And with that precedent, He is not saying everybody who does
- 27:17these things I'm going to strike dead immediately, but He's
- 27:21showing the severity of the judgment for those actions and
- 27:28that the consequences will not just be the immediate death of
- 27:31the individual, but the eternal consequences that go along with
- 27:35it. Nadab and Abihu are struck dead
- 27:40immediately for offering strange fire because not a couple of
- 27:46days earlier they had been given the orders as to what it was
- 27:50they were supposed to do and how they were supposed to do it.
- 27:55There is nothing that should have been more fresh in their
- 27:58minds than what their responsibility was and yet they
- 28:04still made the choice to do it incorrectly.
- 28:10And I say the choice because when you examine the statement,
- 28:14and I think we talked about this a couple of weeks ago, what are
- 28:19Nadab and Abihu convicted of? They offer strange fire before
- 28:28the Lord notice it. It's not strange incense, it's
- 28:34strange fire, which means they got the fire from the incorrect
- 28:40source. Within the confines of the
- 28:43Tabernacle, there is only one place that you can get fire
- 28:48sufficient to burn incense. You know where it is, The altar
- 28:53of burnt offering where God commanded them to get it.
- 28:58If you're going to offer strange fire before God at the
- 29:01Tabernacle, you literally have to walk right past the place
- 29:06where you're supposed to get it to leave the Tabernacle grounds
- 29:10to get it from somewhere else. Which means, guess what?
- 29:17You didn't do it by accident. You did it intentionally.
- 29:25This was not Nadab and Abihu made a mistake and God went off
- 29:30the Cliff in his judgement to them in order to make a point.
- 29:35They intentionally with purpose went to the wrong source to do
- 29:43something and God says we're not doing it that way.
- 29:49Well, what did Ananias and Sapphira do over in Acts Chapter
- 29:545? Lied to the holy.
- 29:56They lied, but, but it wasn't an accident.
- 30:00They, they didn't accidentally misspeak in what they said, did
- 30:04they? They saw what was being done in
- 30:10in giving honor and in recognition for those who were
- 30:14giving of the things that they had sold.
- 30:17And they wanted that same notoriety, but they didn't want
- 30:24to give everything. They wanted to keep a bit.
- 30:29Now, we've all discussed this many different times.
- 30:31Was there anything wrong with them keeping some of the
- 30:33proceeds of land that they had sold and not giving all of it to
- 30:37the apostles? No, they had every right to do
- 30:41that. They could have sold the land
- 30:42and not give it anything and it wouldn't have violated the law.
- 30:48The problem is not with what they sold or how much they gave.
- 30:53It is with the fact that they intentionally lied about what
- 30:58they did. And God says we're not going to
- 31:01do this. Actually very similar situations
- 31:08in similar settings at the very beginning of the institution of
- 31:13the law, and it was done by God in order to prove a point.
- 31:21Not to say that every time this happens this is going to be the
- 31:27consequence, or that I abhor this more than anything else
- 31:31that you could possibly do, but to make the point that God is
- 31:36serious about the commands that He gives and that His justice,
- 31:45while it may not always be swift, we'll be there.
- 31:55Hofnay Infinihas have done these things, and everybody knows that
- 32:06what they are doing is wicked. Who's supposed to step in and
- 32:15stop them? Did God have a plan in place for
- 32:19this? Sure, the high priest is
- 32:25supposed to step in and stop them according to the law, but
- 32:29what's the problem? The high priest is Dad, and
- 32:36Dad's not going to discipline his sons.
- 32:40And you know what God does? Step in and take care of the
- 32:46problem. Hofnay Infinehas in chapter 3
- 32:54are going to be killed and chapter 4 the Ark of God is
- 33:02going to be captured. Adam.
- 33:05Might be a fault for us and talk about the rich Madame Lazarus in
- 33:09Luke 16. In verse 29, Abraham says to him
- 33:16they have moles and problems to let them hear lean.
- 33:19You know, today we've got the word.
- 33:25That's right. Well.
- 33:27In verse 31 Jesus said he said to them if they hear not Moses
- 33:34and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded the one rose
- 33:38of the dead. You know, the rich man want to
- 33:41bring someone back to the dead, a miracle.
- 33:43And some people might say today, well, if I could see a miracle,
- 33:47I would believe or I would go like, you know, I, I haven't
- 33:52seen that evidence. We've got the evidence here.
- 33:55That's right. You know, there's a lot of
- 33:57people that that say, you know, well, well, if we could just see
- 34:00God just lay it on somebody and really bring justice out, that'd
- 34:06straighten a lot of people up. Well, it would straighten a few
- 34:09people up for a little while, but you know, even when God is
- 34:15the one bringing justice, if your heart's not what it's
- 34:21supposed to be, if your desire to serve God isn't what it's
- 34:25supposed to be, there's no amount of judgment that God is
- 34:29going to bring that is going to actually cause you to change
- 34:32your mind. It's proven over and over again
- 34:37in Scripture. And that goes back to the
- 34:39passage that Cliff read for us just a moment ago.
- 34:41You've got the Scriptures in front of you, but if you're not
- 34:45willing to listen to them, it doesn't matter what else
- 34:48happens. Ultimately, you're not going to
- 34:51be obedient. And even if you do the right
- 34:54things by your actions, because you know that's what's expected,
- 34:58what does God look at? Can we do the right things on
- 35:04the outside and still be just as ugly and rotten on the inside?
- 35:09Yep, sure can. That is why Christianity is
- 35:15designed as a heart first law. Does God care what we do?
- 35:23Yes. But He cares just as much and
- 35:27understands that the motivation for why we do it is going to be
- 35:32central to how we do it. If our heart isn't right, our
- 35:40actions aren't going to be worth a hill of beans.
- 35:49While there are areas where there are similarities between
- 35:55what happens with Eli and his sons and what happens with
- 35:58Samuel and his sons, there's also some very distinctive
- 36:02differences. And God treats it differently
- 36:06because of those differences. But we've got just a few minutes
- 36:12left this morning, and I want to get back into Chapter 8 to look
- 36:16at a couple of other things from this request.
- 36:18Because when you understand the background of this, there is a
- 36:26sense listen very carefully to what I'm about to say.
- 36:32There is a sense in which you can see the point that the
- 36:37elders of Israel are going to make to Samuel.
- 36:43Do you think they remember Eli and his sons?
- 36:46Somebody talking about their age, right?
- 36:52They would have been young men at the time, but they know what
- 36:56happened with Eli and his sons. And I believe what you have in
- 37:01First Samuel 8 is a sense of here we go again.
- 37:08You know, we've got the judge that God put in place, but now
- 37:11his sons are starting to be in charge.
- 37:13And here we are. These are areas where the apple
- 37:20really did fall a little bit further from the tree.
- 37:25Now, that doesn't mean that their solution is right, because
- 37:27their solution is motivated by wanting to be like the other
- 37:30nations. That's the statement of verses
- 37:344:00 and 5:00. They say, look, your ways are
- 37:38old and your sons do not walk in your ways.
- 37:41Notice they don't cast aspersions on Samuel.
- 37:46They don't say Samuel, you're not doing your job.
- 37:49Samuel, you're not really that good of a judge.
- 37:53No, they say your sons aren't like you.
- 37:58They recognize and they acknowledge the character of
- 38:02Samuel. They also don't say.
- 38:05And Samuel, you're not taking care of your job and you're not
- 38:08taking care of your sons. That's why it's many times
- 38:11thought that maybe Samuel didn't even know what was going on
- 38:14until the elders come before him.
- 38:19But your sons do not walk in your ways.
- 38:22So make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
- 38:25What's Samuel's response? He is not happy.
- 38:34Verse 6 says he is displeased when they said, give us a king
- 38:39to judge us. And so you know what Samuel
- 38:41does? Samuel goes through and he
- 38:45preaches the most fire and brimstone sermon about having a
- 38:49king that any man had ever heard, right?
- 38:54No, he goes to the one who's really in charge because Samuel
- 39:03knows it's not him. The only reason he's in this
- 39:09position is because God put him here.
- 39:13Samuel is not arrogant. Samuel is not proud.
- 39:18Samuel is humble as a servant, and the 1st place that he goes
- 39:23is to the one who's really in charge.
- 39:26And Samuel knows it and acknowledges it, and he prays to
- 39:30God, verse 6 or verse 7 rather. And the Lord says to Samuel,
- 39:37Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you, For
- 39:41they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I
- 39:45should reign over them according to all the works which they have
- 39:49done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt,
- 39:52even to this day which which they have forsaken me and served
- 39:56other gods, so they are doing to you also.
- 40:00Now therefore heed their voice. However you shall solemnly
- 40:04forewarn them and show them the behavior of the king who will
- 40:08reign over them. God tells Samuel They've not
- 40:17rejected you and they hadn't, had they?
- 40:24They acknowledge that Samuel is very good at his job, that he's
- 40:29righteous, that he's honorable, says they've not rejected you,
- 40:34they've rejected me. But let's face it, when you've
- 40:38spent your whole life trying to be there for your people and
- 40:41they say we want someone else, would it sting for you?
- 40:46Sure. It stung for Samuel.
- 40:54God says this isn't anything new.
- 40:57They've done this ever since they came out of Egypt.
- 41:02This has been hundreds of years and dozens of generations of the
- 41:08people of Israel that have wanted to be like everybody
- 41:11else. You know, in the New Testament,
- 41:18we often like to talk about the parable that Jesus gives about
- 41:24the woman who keeps coming before the magistrate because
- 41:28she's not gotten what she wants. And eventually the magistrate
- 41:33gives her what he wants, what she wants, just so that she'll
- 41:36leave him alone. You know, there's a lot of
- 41:40people that take that particular parable and they say that's the
- 41:43way we're supposed to be with God.
- 41:44We're just supposed to pester God until he gives us what we
- 41:47want. That's not the point of the
- 41:50parable. This is it's one of the few
- 41:52parables that's actually the It's not this, it's this.
- 41:58If this wicked judge will do it just to get you out of your way,
- 42:00how much more does God love you and is willing to give you what
- 42:04you want and what you need because he loves you and cares
- 42:08about you. However, this is one of those
- 42:13instances where God tells the people of Israel, I'm going to
- 42:24give you what you want and you're not going to like the
- 42:29ultimate results. You know, there are times when
- 42:34we get belligerent with God about having to have it this
- 42:38way. God is going to give us exactly
- 42:41what we asked for and it's not because it's what's best for us.
- 42:45It's to teach us a lesson about being willing to listen to him
- 42:55and to let him lead. God tells Samuel, you know what,
- 43:00Samuel, we're going to do this. But he says, I want you to
- 43:05forewarn them and show them the behavior of the king who will
- 43:11reign after them. So Samuel is going to go and
- 43:14he's going to tell all of the words of the Lord to the people,
- 43:18and he says verse 11. This will be the behavior of the
- 43:23king who will reign over you. He will take your sons and
- 43:27appoint them for his own Chariots and to be his horsemen,
- 43:30and some will run before his Chariots.
- 43:33He will appoint captains over his thousands and captains over
- 43:36his 50s, and will set some to plow his ground and reap his
- 43:40harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for
- 43:44his Chariots. He will take your daughters to
- 43:46be perfumers, cooks and bakers, and he will take the best of
- 43:49your fields, your vineyards, and your olive Groves and give them
- 43:52to his servants. He will take a tenth of your
- 43:55grain and your vintage and give it to his officers and servants.
- 43:58He will take your male servants, your female servants, your
- 44:01finest young men, your donkeys, and put them to his work.
- 44:05He will take a tenth of your sheep, and you will be his
- 44:07servants. And you will cry out in that day
- 44:10because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, and
- 44:13the Lord will not hear you in that day.
- 44:21Samuel says, Let me tell you what this King's going to do.
- 44:23This king is going to do whatever he wants.
- 44:28He's going to take your crops, He's going to take your fields.
- 44:30He's going to take your flocks. He's going to take your herds.
- 44:32He's going to take your sons. He's going to take your
- 44:34daughters, and he's going to do with them whatever he wishes.
- 44:39And you're going to come crying back to God saying the King's
- 44:43not doing what we want him to do.
- 44:44And God's going to say tough luck.
- 44:46You asked for him. And you know what's going to
- 44:51happen in Israel, just exactly what Samuel said was going to
- 44:57happen in Israel. And that's how we got Saul.
- 45:10There's a lot of pretext to the kings that are coming.
- 45:15And First Samuel chapter 8 is a fascinating discussion of how
- 45:22God will sometimes give people what they want, even though He
- 45:28knows it's not what's best for them, and they're going to have
- 45:33to learn the lessons of their own greed over the course of
- 45:39time. Thank you so much for your
- 45:41attention this morning and your participation.
