Transcript
- 0:00So interviewing, what questions should you be asking if you're an agent?
- 0:05And then also, if you're a team leader, what questions sh- should
- 0:08you be asking an agent to see if they're a good fit for your team?
- 0:12Nobody in real estate is gonna tell you the real stuff.
- 0:15So we will.
- 0:16We're gonna talk about all the stuff that nobody posts about.
- 0:19But everybody needs to hear.
- 0:22We've been in this industry long enough to know what works.
- 0:25And long enough to know what doesn't.
- 0:27I'm Pam.
- 0:28And I'm Mackenzie.
- 0:29And this is Real Talk, Real Agents.
- 0:31And this is Real Talk, Real Agents.
- 0:31If you're a real estate agent that is so tired of the fake it 'til you
- 0:35make it energy, this is your show.
- 0:38We are two agents who are still in it every single day, and we are
- 0:41not coaching from the sidelines.
- 0:43We are in the trenches with you.
- 0:45No filters and no fluff.
- 0:47All right, Real Talk starts right now.
- 0:49Da, da, da, da, da.
- 0:54Absolutely.
- 0:54I cannot wait to dive into this topic, especially if you're one, even
- 0:59just interviewing a team, but also a brokerage and/or a firm, right?
- 1:02Yeah.
- 1:03You know, I think this industry is so interesting 'cause I think, um,
- 1:09you know, it's if you have a pulse, um, you dress kind of cute Uh, you
- 1:14look like you're okay Mm-hmm Then we, then just, you just get hired, right?
- 1:18Right.
- 1:18We see that all the time, without the intentional interview process
- 1:23and what that, what that really looks like on both sides, right?
- 1:26Well, it's an interesting topic for us, as we have been playing around with how
- 1:31we want to get in front of different agents for our team and for our brokerage,
- 1:36what feels most authen- authentic to us, what are we maybe not doing because it's
- 1:40uncomfortable, but we can get better at.
- 1:43And so I love this conversation a little bit for us, 'cause we've
- 1:45learned some stuff throughout.
- 1:47Yeah.
- 1:47So we are hiring to our team, we are hiring to our independent brokerage for
- 1:51independent agents, and we went down the route of some targeted Facebook ads.
- 1:58Yeah, we did.
- 1:59For sure.
- 1:59Yeah.
- 2:00Mm-hmm.
- 2:00And so what questions did we have kind of as filter questions for
- 2:06that ad for them to then, you know, click, give us their information
- 2:09so that we can reach out to them.
- 2:10So we even had to be really intentional about- The whole
- 2:12process … that whole process.
- 2:14Yeah.
- 2:14So maybe we'll share some of those questions, because we tweaked them
- 2:17through the six months that we kind of did some ads and kind of what
- 2:20that process looked like for us.
- 2:22Yeah.
- 2:22I mean, I think just generally speaking, if you're a team leader and you want
- 2:26those questions or perhaps some good interview questions too, we're gonna
- 2:29have some downloads, uh, where we can send to you that will, um, you know,
- 2:34provide some of the insight that we've, we've learned in this journey of agent
- 2:38attraction and interviews and then bring, bringing people onto the team too.
- 2:42Yeah.
- 2:42So they didn't have a prior relationship to them.
- 2:44We were trying to be very specific, intentional about the questions
- 2:47that we asked, you know, how many years have you been in the business?
- 2:50What has been your volume?
- 2:51Not count, but volume in the last 12 months.
- 2:55You know, what is it that you're looking for to be different?
- 2:58Yeah, and I'm forgetting the other two, and that's why we'll have a PDF to you.
- 3:02Well, I know one was, are you coachable or not?
- 3:04Mm. You know, sometimes people don't have that self-awareness about it, but it is
- 3:07an interesting question to see, like, what the response is on that, and if that's not
- 3:12something that they feel like they need some, some coaching and accountability- Mm
- 3:15as well.
- 3:16So we would get those answers, and so for somebody that we had no idea
- 3:19who they were, it was great talking points to then get on a call with them
- 3:23and just have them dive deeper into the answers that they shared with us.
- 3:28'Cause I think you've talked about before that we actually learn the
- 3:31most when they're talking and by the questions that they're asking.
- 3:34100%. Like, we have learned through our process too, where before, like, I would
- 3:40interview them or you would interview them first, and then we would flip, but now we
- 3:44try to do it together so there's someone that's always in that observation role.
- 3:50Um, because you pick up so, you know, you miss things sometimes
- 3:53when you're in the conversation.
- 3:55And someone else kind of watching can pick up on body language or just eye
- 3:59diversions, just all these things, right, that are just a part of communication.
- 4:04But it also helps you think of some good follow-up questions because
- 4:07you're, you're not in the heat of it, you're just kind of watching too.
- 4:10So that has been a change to our process, is to do a, a Zoom- Mm-hmm
- 4:15or Google Meet or whatever, just to, to do that together.
- 4:19And then we can, if we need a follow-up question or follow-up call to kind of go
- 4:24over some logistics, we can do that too.
- 4:25So we, we've almost slowed it down so you have a little bit more
- 4:30intentionality on this person, and you also are not just in the moment,
- 4:35like, get excited about someone.
- 4:36You're like, "Oh, let's just bring them on," you know, and it's like, "Mm, no.
- 4:39Was that a good fit truly?" Mm-hmm.
- 4:42And we are finding that we might ask different questions to a newer
- 4:47agent in the industry versus a more experienced agent, and also
- 4:51the questions that they ask us.
- 4:53So I think it'll be fun for us to share with a newer agent maybe
- 4:57what questions to not lead with when you're interviewing at- Okay
- 5:01a brokerage or a team, just to give-- People just, you
- 5:03don't know what you don't know.
- 5:05Well, that's the hard part.
- 5:06I think when it is a newer agent, commonly they're like, "I don't even
- 5:09know what to ask." So you feel like, in a way, you almost wanna lead them
- 5:14as like, "Well, these are the things you should be asking," because we
- 5:17wanna make sure it's a good fit, right?
- 5:19I remember when I first got licensed, I didn't know how this worked.
- 5:22I mean, I came from corporate America where you would go through
- 5:25three rounds of recruitment and, you know, all these questions with
- 5:29different rooms of management.
- 5:31And so when you got a job, like, you really went through a process.
- 5:34Mm-hmm.
- 5:35You feel like you were really vetted.
- 5:36And then I came to real estate, and I had, like, a five-minute conversation with
- 5:40this firm, a five-minute conversation with this firm, and they were all like, "Please
- 5:43come." I was like, "Am I Am I that good?
- 5:49Or am I just breathing and they're like, "Fantastic, we'll hire you."
- 5:53Mm-hmm.
- 5:54And so I think it sets up the expectation probably pretty poorly for newer
- 6:00agents, like right from the get-go.
- 6:02So they don't know what to ask.
- 6:04Mm-hmm.
- 6:04They don't know how Keller Williams is different than Howard Hanna or Berkshire.
- 6:10They just, they don't know.
- 6:12They don't know the questions to ask.
- 6:13And so they commonly can find themselves maybe later with a firm that's just
- 6:18not 100% a good fit for them, and then they are not producing and they're not
- 6:23making money, and then, you know, we're in this whole failure trap- Mm-hmm
- 6:27for a lot of newer agents.
- 6:29But then you get a somewhat experienced agent and they usually come to the
- 6:33table with, they know now a little through fire- Right … of what was
- 6:38not working and why you're different.
- 6:40But still there could be some misses on the questions they ask as well.
- 6:45For sure.
- 6:45So a new agent, if you're listening to this, I think two things that I learned,
- 6:49'cause I had it, I was blessed to have it, was what kind of training and
- 6:53education are you gonna get after they hire you, and who is your point person?
- 6:57So because just like with most things, when you go to a class to learn something,
- 7:01to get certified, we got-- We all went to real estate school, and then you get
- 7:05your first transaction, you're like, "Oh my gosh, I don't know anything." Right?
- 7:09Um, they taught me how to set a deal, a real estate deal, but they didn't teach
- 7:13me how to, like, run a transaction- Yeah
- 7:15right from beginning to end.
- 7:16And so for a newer agent, it's what type of resources do you have?
- 7:20What's the training look like and are, you know, how quickly can
- 7:23you help me get into production?
- 7:25Yes.
- 7:26I think that one's probably the most important thing is, 'cause every
- 7:32firm, every team is probably a little bit different on that too, right?
- 7:36Um, I think the adage when I first started, it was like, "Well,
- 7:39here's a phone, um, here's a phone book, here's your, you know,
- 7:45your contacts or your database.
- 7:47Um, good luck.
- 7:49You know, let us know when you get under contract and we'll help
- 7:51you with that." And you're like, "Huh?" Uh, okay, uh, what do I say?
- 7:57How do I say, how do I get people in my life that want to
- 8:00transact, that want to buy or sell?
- 8:02And there was, at the time, not a lot of guidance there.
- 8:07And so, but you don't, you just think, I think as a new agent,
- 8:11this company is just gonna give me people, or just gonna give me leads.
- 8:15Well, and, and I don't know that every company says they're gonna
- 8:18give you leads, but I think that they also, it's a sales pitch.
- 8:21Yeah.
- 8:21You know?
- 8:21So the other, um, is that they obviously want you, but you get to then decide,
- 8:26new agent or not, you get to decide if you're interviewing them just as
- 8:30much as they're interviewing you.
- 8:31Hopefully more so.
- 8:32Right.
- 8:33And so there is that whole, so that's why the question, okay, great, I joined
- 8:37your firm, I joined your team, now what?
- 8:40You know, you're in front of me now, you've been courting me for the last
- 8:42month, two weeks, whatever it is, so now that I'm here, what does that look like?
- 8:46I have bills to pay.
- 8:48So an experienced agent knows a little bit more.
- 8:50Mm-hmm.
- 8:50'Cause they feel like they did buy the sales pitch.
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:53And now they're like, "What the hell?"
- 8:54Like, "I'm broke." Yeah, I'm broke.
- 8:56Was it broke, bored, and Dang it.
- 8:59Burnt out.
- 9:00Burned out.
- 9:01Burn out, that was it.
- 9:02Yeah.
- 9:02Yeah.
- 9:02But that can happen to you pretty quickly.
- 9:04Mm-hmm.
- 9:04So you learn that as a, as an experienced agent.
- 9:07But the new ones, the ones that we typically get are the
- 9:10question is, what's your split?
- 9:11Mm-hmm.
- 9:13What's your split?
- 9:13It's always the number one, and I was just laughing with that where I was like,
- 9:17you know, 100% of zero is still zero.
- 9:21Mm-hmm.
- 9:21So you can get the greatest split in the entire world, but what
- 9:23does that really mean ultimately?
- 9:25Mm-hmm.
- 9:26Usually, when I get that question, and I understand, like you wanna
- 9:29know what you're gonna make.
- 9:30It, it's not that it's a awful question, but if that, that's the first question
- 9:35out of your mouth or, like really early in the conversation, I'm usually like,
- 9:40uh, how mu- You've been listening this long and you still haven't subscribed?
- 9:46Uh, we see you.
- 9:48Wanna do us a solid?
- 9:49Please share this episode with an agent that really needs to hear it.
- 9:53And that's a perfect example of the questions that the agent asks
- 9:56tells us so much about the agent.
- 9:57Yes.
- 9:58So now they're leading with, what am I not making, versus how can you help me grow?
- 10:03Because if an agent's growing on our team, an agent's growing at our
- 10:06brokerage, they're not leading with how much they're investing, right?
- 10:10It's an investment.
- 10:11We're gonna invest in you, so therefore, this is an investment back
- 10:14to the team, back to the brokerage.
- 10:16Here's what we can, we will provide for you.
- 10:19Here's what we will do.
- 10:20This is how we will get you from 5 million to 10 million.
- 10:23And a lot of it's… And I have learned to, to also, yes, here's the blueprint.
- 10:29Yes, we will, we will create the community, but it's also what
- 10:32are you going to do differently.
- 10:33100%, girl.
- 10:34That tells me- … what are you gonna do for me?
- 10:37Right.
- 10:37It's that question.
- 10:38Mm-hmm.
- 10:39Which I don't love that energy.
- 10:41No, 'cause it will always be, that's the reason that you didn't get the
- 10:48transaction, you're not making the money, you're having a slow month, right?
- 10:52Yeah.
- 10:52It's going to always be our- Somebody else's- … it's
- 10:54that victim mindset … fault.
- 10:54It's, right.
- 10:56And so- At, when an agent comes and wants to know, an experienced agent, you know,
- 11:03the first question, they're just like, "Oh, I just feel unsettled. I feel bored.
- 11:06I feel like I need to change." Mm-hmm.
- 11:08You're really good at asking the question, "Well, what would be different?
- 11:11What is it where you are now that you don't like or that
- 11:14you think you're missing?
- 11:16How will that be d-," because you're the same person- Yeah … in
- 11:19this room versus another room.
- 11:21Yeah.
- 11:21So what will the leadership do, and what will the different room
- 11:24do for you to get you to where you think that you want to be?
- 11:27Sure.
- 11:28What is it you think that you maybe need to change, grow,
- 11:30and develop about yourself?
- 11:32Mm-hmm.
- 11:32And if they don't think anything… We interviewed an agent yesterday,
- 11:35and they're just like, "Yeah, I'm, I'm good." Like, there, we could,
- 11:37there was no co- there was not a comfortable bone in his body.
- 11:40Would you agree with that?
- 11:41100%. Mm-hmm.
- 11:42It was everybody else's reasons why he has not had a single
- 11:45transaction and no prospects.
- 11:48And we're like, "All right.
- 11:49Well, you know, how are you gr- trying to grow your business?"
- 11:51"Open houses, they're terrible.
- 11:53They don't work." And I was like, "Hmm.
- 11:55Okay." Mm-hmm.
- 11:56Um, "I don't want Zillow leads 'cause they're terrible, too," but
- 12:00saying that he wants hot buyer leads.
- 12:02And I'm like, that is Zillow leads.
- 12:05I mean, I hate to say it.
- 12:06They're not great.
- 12:07I mean, I understand there's, there's some negatives to them, but if that's
- 12:10what you're asking for, you've had them and you didn't like that either.
- 12:13Do you have a sphere?
- 12:14Do you have some people that you know?
- 12:16Nope.
- 12:17And, uh, it was like, I mean, I don't know if we can help you.
- 12:22But I mean, he l- uh, thank goodness he was honest and he was upfront.
- 12:27I did appreciate that, and I think we were equally honest.
- 12:30It was like at the, it, after 10 minutes we were like, "I just don't
- 12:34think we're the right fit." Mm-hmm.
- 12:35"I think we're not what you're looking for, and you're not really
- 12:38what we're looking for either."
- 12:40So I'm so glad that you brought that up because as, I don't ever want to interview
- 12:44somebody and it not be a fit or just, you know, get whatever kind of feeling.
- 12:48But it felt so good that you and I have gotten so clear on who we can help.
- 12:54Yeah.
- 12:55Support.
- 12:55I don't help.
- 12:56Uh, people can help themselves.
- 12:57They don't need us to help them.
- 12:58So I, I guess align-wise.
- 12:59Mm-hmm.
- 12:59I'm trying to find the right word there, but it just… We saved everybody
- 13:03a lot of time, effort, and energy.
- 13:05Oh, yeah.
- 13:06We blocked an hour, we got 45 minutes back, you know, just from
- 13:09like, we gave him suggestions.
- 13:11The other thing too that I love is we have made such great friends
- 13:15and colleagues in the industry, and so we know every team's different.
- 13:18There's not one size fits all.
- 13:19So I feel really good about being able to say, "Hey, have you interviewed with
- 13:22this team, or have you spoken to this? This is, what you're saying, I believe
- 13:27this is what this team can offer." Right.
- 13:28"And we cannot." And just because again, no, I know it doesn't feel good me to have
- 13:33an agent on a team and them not succeed.
- 13:35Right.
- 13:35No.
- 13:35I'm not the scared one.
- 13:36I don't want to do that either.
- 13:37There's just a lot of wasted time, and it's stressful.
- 13:39Yeah, it is.
- 13:40And so I do love that, you know, we've gotten super clear and aligned
- 13:45on what, who we know that we can, can align support with and, and help grow.
- 13:50100%. I, I, I did, it did feel good, and I think a past version of us as
- 13:57individuals, maybe when we first started, and maybe you're a team leader and
- 14:01you're just looking for bodies, right?
- 14:02In your mind.
- 14:03Mm-hmm.
- 14:04Like, I hate to say it that way, but you're overworked, you wanna build a
- 14:07team, and so you meet someone, they seem to be pretty nice, and so you
- 14:12just naturally you guys come together.
- 14:14Now sometimes beautifully that works.
- 14:17But I would say Please spend some time, I think, on really getting super clear
- 14:23on what qualities it is that that person needs to have to work with you, what
- 14:28you're looking for, um, vice versa.
- 14:32Because the moment you know that super clear, then you can better identify is
- 14:37this gonna work or are we just gonna waste some time and is this gonna be
- 14:41a train wreck, and potentially we're not gonna like each other afterwards?
- 14:44'Cause that's painful, too.
- 14:45Mm-hmm.
- 14:46So I would say slow down.
- 14:47Ask, ask really good questions.
- 14:49Don't just go into this just easy.
- 14:51Well, that was a little bit of a, a trap that I was feeling that I had inun-
- 14:55unintentionally maybe put myself in as I'm… We have both roles of recruiting-
- 15:00Yeah … and sales training, and wanting to in- always increasing your numbers
- 15:06does not, and production numbers, doesn't necessarily mean more agents.
- 15:10Mm-hmm.
- 15:10It means making sure you're also putting time into the agents that have aligned.
- 15:13Let's hope, right?
- 15:13Yeah.
- 15:13But it can be hard to make sure that you are equally putting in time to an
- 15:18agent, to new agents onto the team, and the agents who've already aligned with
- 15:21us, and making sure that you're helping them with their production number- Right
- 15:23and making sure you're helping them get to where they need to be.
- 15:27And so that was a little bit of this trap.
- 15:29And so g- that's kind of why I start asking the question.
- 15:32The first way we tried to share was to add so less organic.
- 15:36Mm-hmm.
- 15:36Right?
- 15:37And when I look back at who's on our team, it's 100% organic.
- 15:42100%.
- 15:43Even the independent agents that have joined us- Yeah … just joined
- 15:47the firm and not the team, right?
- 15:48'Cause that's an option with us now.
- 15:50Right.
- 15:50They have been people that we've known or people that we've
- 15:53known through someone else.
- 15:55Mm-hmm.
- 15:55And have some sort of… But just like prospecting, when we tell
- 15:59clients, excuse me, agents to make calls, there's more people that
- 16:02you don't know than you do know.
- 16:03Correct.
- 16:04So our… We did wanna get ourselves out there.
- 16:06As hard as it was for us to see these ads out there, we wanted to try it.
- 16:11Mm-hmm.
- 16:12Two things came to my mind for me is, number one, I need to get
- 16:14better at having, asking better questions to somebody I don't know.
- 16:17Right.
- 16:18I lean so heavily on the relationship part- Right
- 16:20which is a, a pro for me and the relationship I've already built, but
- 16:24when I… When somebody doesn't know me, and I'm going into a c- you're
- 16:28much better at, um, a cold interview.
- 16:30You just, you have a little bit more of a skill set there to interview, right?
- 16:34And so that was something great feedback for myself to say,
- 16:37"Okay, this agent could be great.
- 16:39Let's just don't, you know-" Yeah … d- don't be afraid to ask the right questions
- 16:43or don't feel like because they don't know you that they won't see the value
- 16:46in still joining your team, right?
- 16:48'Cause there's that relationship's not there.
- 16:50And then having the relationships that we do have in the organic and how many
- 16:54agents that are on our team from other agents who have referred them too, and
- 16:58leaning into that because those agents want to work with agents like them Great.
- 17:04And so I just wanna talk about that a little bit.
- 17:06I'm sitting here laughing because, you know, our agents are trying
- 17:10to sometimes work with cold leads.
- 17:12Yeah.
- 17:12And then sometimes they're working with referrals or sphere, right?
- 17:16Mm-hmm.
- 17:17And so what we're both saying is we would prefer to work with sphere- Yeah.
- 17:21and referrals, which is not a lie.
- 17:24Um, but there's a different skill set between the two.
- 17:28100%. So it is the trying to learn a better skill set for people
- 17:33that we don't know, and we have to ask the same of our agents.
- 17:36That if you're getting leads, you have to get better at having
- 17:40conversations with, um, with, with cold.
- 17:42It just is so funny.
- 17:43Well, that's a- I was like, I was like, "Well, isn't that
- 17:45interesting?" Well, yeah.
- 17:46We're both-- we're selling just different, uh, different things.
- 17:49And getting better at asking better questions- Yeah … just like we talk
- 17:52to agents when there's somebody and just, "Well, why do you…" Instead
- 17:55of going into, well, vomiting about how amazing our brokerage is and our
- 17:59team is, what are you looking for?
- 18:01Because I learned very quickly I'm never gonna assume why
- 18:04somebody's leaving a team.
- 18:05It could be for-- It's not always about the money.
- 18:08No.
- 18:09And people tend to lead with money, so we tend to put that, that
- 18:13expectation on that conversation.
- 18:15And so I'm always very curious how long I can get into a conversation
- 18:20before splits are brought up.
- 18:22Yeah.
- 18:22It's like a little mental game.
- 18:23It's like a little game, yeah.
- 18:24A little game.
- 18:24So if, if you and I talk about Capital Coast, just know the-- I don't know.
- 18:28I'm, I need to go back and see- I was gonna say … how long it takes.
- 18:31I don't know what the, what my, uh, the record is, but I think
- 18:34one wouldn't even bring it up.
- 18:36And afterwards I was just like, "Hey, do you wanna know what the splits are?" But-
- 18:39Yeah … loved that about that person.
- 18:42Well, yeah, 'cause I think they're leaning on, is this a good
- 18:45cultural fit, you know, for us?
- 18:47And maybe we can talk about the different categories of questions that we have.
- 18:50Mm-hmm.
- 18:51Uh, 'cause I think one is, like, around transaction, one is around, uh, a-
- 18:56another set is around, like, mindset.
- 18:59You know, how do you handle the ups and downs in this career?
- 19:02'Cause it is mimey.
- 19:04Ooh.
- 19:05And then the cultural piece, which is really important to us.
- 19:08Like, you have to fit in this.
- 19:10If you're gonna be a cancer or a negative, then it's-- you could be a top producer,
- 19:16and you're just not gonna be the right fit for us because of those things.
- 19:19So we, we do have sets of, of questions that really focus on several buckets.
- 19:26Yes, and like Pam said, if you would love to know what those different questions
- 19:29are in the different buckets, you know, shoot us a message and we'll be happy
- 19:32to send over that PDF to you and break it down- Yeah … you know, into the
- 19:35different, into different categories.
- 19:37Y- yes, the, the sales part is huge, but the mindset and the character of
- 19:42a person Is I sometimes I think more.
- 19:46Oh, yeah.
- 19:47You know, um, we have an agent on our team who is newer.
- 19:51Um, he's really having to do a lot of work around, like, mindset to stay positive.
- 19:57Mm-hmm.
- 19:57Um, just 'cause of some external factors and some pressure
- 20:00there that I think he feels.
- 20:02And if he did not have the, uh, fortitude to stick through some of those
- 20:07things, he's making her calls, he's making expires, he's making dispos-
- 20:11Mm-hmm … and cold leads there, too.
- 20:13So I think we did a lot of work and conversations with him
- 20:17before to kind of learn who, w- what he was made of in a way.
- 20:23And so even though, um, you know, just getting things ramped up maybe it's,
- 20:29it's taken some work, he's, he has the right, he has the right attitude.
- 20:33Gotcha.
- 20:34And now I think it's just working on skill.
- 20:36Mm-hmm.
- 20:36You know?
- 20:38All right, so to wrap this up a little bit, if you were gonna be interviewing
- 20:42at a brokerage or a firm, not that you're going anywhere since you do
- 20:44own- … this independent firm, so if you go, then I guess we all go.
- 20:49I mean, Lord knows I have interviewed at almost all of them
- 20:51at, at one point in my career.
- 20:53Mm-hmm.
- 20:53Right.
- 20:54So what, I guess, question, is there one question that would impress you
- 20:59being interviewed and/or being the interviewee, um, at, at a brokerage that
- 21:03would be most important to you for your business and, and what you would need?
- 21:06So I think you just said it, business.
- 21:09Mm-hmm.
- 21:09So one firm, probably the one that more recently had my attention, was at this
- 21:15point in my career, it was not about leads, it was not about a new training
- 21:20class or some AI or any shit like that.
- 21:23It was, I wanna sit and look at your business- And help you plan and
- 21:30support you on how, how to grow that deeper and more robust, and bring
- 21:37in resources to help you do that.
- 21:39Mm-hmm.
- 21:40Like, it was not just, I don't know, it was fuller.
- 21:43Mm-hmm.
- 21:43It was a, you know, I mean- Yeah … it was a, it was a much deeper conversation,
- 21:48and it was literally around business.
- 21:50I don't need to make you, I don't need you to make me feel a certain way.
- 21:53I don't need a lot of gifts.
- 21:55I want you to help me build a profitable business.
- 21:59Mm-hmm.
- 22:00And this person was wanting to be a partner in that, and that impressed
- 22:05me because that was, that was a deeper conversation than what I've had.
- 22:09Mm-hmm.
- 22:09What about you?
- 22:11Who am I going to be around and learn from?
- 22:14Mm-hmm.
- 22:15So I think a great question if somebody shares with me that I'm being
- 22:20interviewed and/or a question that I'd like to try to get off into a
- 22:23conversation is, this is who you'll be around, because we don't always wanna
- 22:27be the smartest person in the room.
- 22:29Yeah.
- 22:29And if you do, then you're not a fit for us.
- 22:30Yeah.
- 22:31Because we all… So I wanna know how am I gonna elevate my business?
- 22:36How am I gonna elevate my skills, my conversation?
- 22:39Who, who am I gonna be around?
- 22:40Yeah.
- 22:41You know, is it, are there top producers?
- 22:44You know, what is the, what is the culture of that part of the team in- Mm-hmm
- 22:48or the brokerage so that I can get better?
- 22:52I love that piece, and I think that's an important one for us to continue to
- 22:56try to, um, interview for- Mm-hmm … is are you the type of person that feels
- 23:01like you've got special sauce and you're just gonna keep it to yourself?
- 23:04Mm-hmm.
- 23:05Or do you want to share in the hopes of knowing that if I share here,
- 23:09then, then I'll learn something down the road, knowing that none of us are
- 23:15doing anything particularly special.
- 23:16Mm-hmm.
- 23:16We're just doing the work.
- 23:18Uh, but I love that, um, I don't know, I just, I love that culture piece, and
- 23:22I think we've been fortunate who we've brought along so far wants to share that.
- 23:27Absolutely.
- 23:29All right.
- 23:30I love that.
- 23:30For newer and experienced agents, and if you like some of the questions that
- 23:33we've been asking and, I don't know, you're curious about Capital Coast,
- 23:36you, uh, live here on the Triangle, we would love to talk to you, and also
- 23:39the Coast, actually, I should say.
- 23:41Not just the Triangle.
- 23:42Sorry, Pam.
- 23:43I know.
- 23:43We need some coastal agents, so- We do need some coastal agents … reach out.
- 23:48All right, Pam, are you ready?
- 23:49I'm gonna do rapid fire off of my brain.
- 23:52I don't have anything written.
- 23:52LOL.
- 23:53Yeah.
- 23:54Here we go.
- 23:54I'm gonna rapid fire from our conversation, what is the, the
- 23:59worst question an agent can ask you in an interview Um,
- 24:03what are you gonna do for me?
- 24:05Mm. Ew.
- 24:07Right?
- 24:08Yeah.
- 24:09Yeah.
- 24:09Mm. It splits or just whatever, but, you know, really it's the, the whole
- 24:13intention of not, not team, not reciprocity, not we're in this together,
- 24:18it's, yeah, what are you gonna do for me?
- 24:21Mm-hmm.
- 24:22Um, mine's very similar.
- 24:23It's just, you know, what are the splits?
- 24:25Yeah.
- 24:25Yeah.
- 24:25Right?
- 24:26That would be the number one question.
- 24:27All right.
- 24:28Second rapid fire coming out of my brain immediately, what is your biggest
- 24:33pet peeve when you're interviewing something like via Zoom or Google Meet?
- 24:38Well, the first thing that came to mind is yesterday, uh, we had a-
- 24:42Damn it, I'm gonna use that one.
- 24:44I know.
- 24:44I believe, I hope he doesn't listen to this podcast.
- 24:47We have, we had our cameras on because typically when you say you're doing a
- 24:52Google Meet, we- Or interview … we are expecting camera, right?
- 24:56Mm-hmm.
- 24:56And this mofo does not even turn his camera on, and I just
- 25:02thought it's kinda rude, right?
- 25:05Right.
- 25:06So he, he accidentally turned it off for a hot second, so- I could see why, yeah
- 25:10yeah.
- 25:11Mm-hmm.
- 25:11I mean, but if you don't show me enough respect to show up dressed and ready, it
- 25:16just, it tells you a lot about the person.
- 25:18Yeah, 'cause it's nothing to do with what you look like.
- 25:18Like, that's not, it just, but I think it's a level of respect.
- 25:21Yes.
- 25:21And taking time to present yourself and however you wanna present
- 25:24yourself, whatever that looks like.
- 25:26Not for nothing, I'm gonna say, how do you feel about that on team meetings
- 25:29when people don't have their cameras on?
- 25:30Oh my gosh.
- 25:32I, I don't love it.
- 25:33I, I hate to call it out 'cause the people I really, really love.
- 25:36So But sometimes how you show up really matters, right?
- 25:41It just, it does.
- 25:42So- I don't love it I don't love it either because it's hard to
- 25:45interact with people that you're not sure are really there, right?
- 25:49Mm-hmm.
- 25:50So anyway.
- 25:51Yeah.
- 25:51Well, okay.
- 25:53Um, the third rapid-fire question is, what is the number one quality that you
- 26:03get fired up for in a good way with an experienced agent when they wanna talk
- 26:06to us about the firm or the brokerage?
- 26:09Mm. So I think you saw this very recently, Carla.
- 26:16I did.
- 26:16I saw, I felt it, all the things.
- 26:20So I think what fired me up about her is you could tell, like, she has
- 26:25drive, um, in such a positive way.
- 26:29Mm. Like, it wasn't, like, a toxic, uh, competitiveness, which I've felt that
- 26:33before from other people, but, um… And it's not like she has anything to prove.
- 26:39She just, she loves to work, and she was ju- she just has drive and
- 26:44determination and, like, a subtle confidence about her, um, that I
- 26:49was just like, "Hell yeah, girl.
- 26:51Let's go." Like, I was super excited about her immediately.
- 26:55Oh, I'm pretty sure, 'cause we were doing the Zoom call together obviously,
- 26:58and I think you texted me initially.
- 27:00I, I do.
- 27:00I, I think within the first f- I-- You usually tell pretty quick.
- 27:03I was like, "Gotta get her.
- 27:05She's awesome." Yeah, she, she was like, "Yes." I was like, "Um, yeah."
- 27:11I do rem- And the drive with, but still coachable.
- 27:14Oh, yeah.
- 27:15100%. Mm-hmm.
- 27:16Like, s- so g- She didn't come off like she knew everything- Mm, yeah … at all.
- 27:18Yeah.
- 27:19I, I just love that.
- 27:20She was coachable.
- 27:20Loved that.
- 27:20You were-- Mm-hmm.
- 27:22Absolutely.
- 27:23And so I don't really have one.
- 27:24I have to ask you a question, right?
- 27:26So the question was, what…
- 27:26Do you know what I do?
- 27:28I, I then I go to the other end where you can tell that true team player.
- 27:32Yeah.
- 27:32Right?
- 27:33So I do, I love that about somebody when they're here working in the community.
- 27:37I don't know.
- 27:38It's a, it's a big thing for me.
- 27:39Yeah.
- 27:39Right?
- 27:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:40All right.
- 27:41My last rapid-fire- Doing great with these, pal
- 27:45question.
- 27:45I, I literally, I, I just don't even know what I'm coming-
- 27:51Oh, we are super impressed … coming from right now.
- 27:51Two, two menopausal women coming up with questions on the fly, y'all.
- 27:54This is, I mean, this is next level stuff.
- 27:56All right.
- 27:57And the last question, if we are, rapid-fire question
- 28:01is… She's already forgot.
- 28:04Yep.
- 28:05I think that all of my- She's just- … genius is gone, and that's, we're
- 28:10gonna end right there- Oh, my God!
- 28:10… at three and four.
- 28:24Put me on the spot.
- 28:24I'm having a hot flash.
- 28:25What happens?
- 28:25Okay, I have no more rapid fire questions.
- 28:25Okay, that was good though.
- 28:25You're proud of me?
- 28:25Like, there- there's nothing, I have nothing right here.
- 28:26Um.
- 28:26She even I was like, "What the fuck?" She comes out with answers.
- 28:29That was awesome.
- 28:29So I like this, I like this, um, I like this top- I like all of our topics.
- 28:34This is a good topic, right, for people.
- 28:35Yeah.
- 28:36All right.
- 28:37Okay.
- 28:38So, um, Pam, I'd love to vibe check this week, right?
- 28:43We're gonna talk about our vibe check for what's going on this week, and how
- 28:45you're feeling, and- What's your vibe?
- 28:48What is my vibe?
- 28:49My vibe is that … I don't know.
- 28:53I had, I had this, I had a word for it, but you go for it.
- 28:57All right.
- 28:57It's safe to say.
- 28:58My vibe for this week is that I just need people to get out of their heads.
- 29:08Yeah.
- 29:09And I can't make anybody get out of their head, right?
- 29:14But what is it about that?
- 29:15Like, like for reals.
- 29:18We care I mean, we talk about this is a great environment that we have, and
- 29:22we have a great environment, right?
- 29:23But I would also be disingenuous if I do not say that we are trying
- 29:27to have somebody join a team and tell them that this is a safe
- 29:30place, and they are bringing years of baggage and years of comparison
- 29:34and years of the imposter syndrome.
- 29:35We're just saying, "Hey, you've only known us for six months, but put
- 29:38yourself out there and role play and do a listing presentation in front
- 29:41of people that you really don't know, and we're not gonna judge you."
- 29:45I know, but I mean, as a society, I mean, I'm not just saying this about
- 29:48our people, I just… as a group, it's just, it's paralyzing to think-
- 29:53Yeah … how much overprocessing that we do instead of just- Mm-hmm … and
- 29:57making it very difficult mentally.
- 29:59Mm. When I say this all the time, on role play, you're literally
- 30:03having a conversation with someone.
- 30:05Mm-hmm.
- 30:05Like, don't be a weirdo.
- 30:06Just ask, like, how would you converse with somebody?
- 30:08Like- Right … she usually uses the word weirdo.
- 30:12I didn't ask any questions.
- 30:14Yeah, and it's just right.
- 30:14I think I'm, my vibe is just the tire.
- 30:16Like, I don't, there's just nothing else to say.
- 30:18You just do it.
- 30:18Like- You're either gonna do it or you're not.
- 30:19Right.
- 30:20So today was literally, and this is not- I want it for you so much that
- 30:23just, it just, all of the sudden you do it … and I'm not, I'm getting better
- 30:27at leader, just saying to somebody, looking them in the eye and saying,
- 30:30"It's your turn to role play," and be silent and be uncomfortable, and don't
- 30:35rescue them, and don't manage them.
- 30:37And they did all the things, probably used all the curse words in their
- 30:42brain about me, but you know what?
- 30:44They started and they did it, right?
- 30:47And how did they feel afterwards?
- 30:48'Cause I know you made the phone call afterwards.
- 30:52Amaz- amazing.
- 30:53Proud of themselves.
- 30:53Proud.
- 30:54Right.
- 30:55They, yes.
- 30:56Already went to, "I should have done this."
- 30:57I'm like, "Well, we're not, that's not why I'm calling." Yeah.
- 31:00I'm just, you did it.
- 31:01You did it.
- 31:02That, that's it.
- 31:03You did it.
- 31:03That's all that we asked for yourself, that you did it.
- 31:07And the world continued to spin.
- 31:09We didn't die.
- 31:11They vomited a little bit.
- 31:13A little bit in their mouth.
- 31:15I felt bad about that.
- 31:17Hey, you know.
- 31:18That's my vibe.
- 31:18I'm just like, I, being kind and not nice, and you, this is what
- 31:24you tell me you want, and I might drive you completely scream.
- 31:27I would say that that's a higher form of love than just-
- 31:32Yeah … than just encouraging.
- 31:34Mm-hmm.
- 31:34You pushed them out of the nest a little bit.
- 31:36I do.
- 31:36And I, and I encourage, and I'm working on that, like, what that fine line is.
- 31:40Mm. And you know, you'll remind me too.
- 31:41It's hard.
- 31:42Mm, 'cause I'll say to you, like, you know what a good… This is
- 31:46not, making this, um, question and in this vibe about me a little bit.
- 31:49But sorry.
- 31:52Um, the encouraging and… Shit, I forgot again.
- 31:59I use so much brain power- I know.
- 32:01Look … to try to auto flag to come up- That's happening
- 32:04with questions that my brain's like, "Sorry, there's no more computing
- 32:07happening." I'll think of it randomly like I did on the other, at the team meeting.
- 32:10I'm like, "Oh, Nicole, I have a shout-out." My God,
- 32:14I can't believe I did that.
- 32:15I vibe checked you Um, vibe check for me is the whole finding motivation when
- 32:23you don't feel the motivation sometimes.
- 32:26It was interesting coming back from vacation.
- 32:29That first week, I felt like I was on fire just because there
- 32:32was a lot of just regular to-dos.
- 32:34It was interesting.
- 32:35It hit me the following week when I was like, "Ooh Okay.
- 32:39Now I got past the fires, now I gotta get back into the routine-
- 32:44Mm-hmm … of the hunt, and what is my day, what do I want it to look
- 32:49like, where do I wanna spend my time.
- 32:51And so it was interesting, just a little bit of a shift of, all right, girl, now
- 32:56you're not on vacation, let's get going.
- 32:59It's been interesting having a conversation with my, my coach, which
- 33:02I shared on the past podcast too, of feeling like you're a little scattered
- 33:07all over the place, and he's been like, "Well, you gotta find your clarity
- 33:10on where you wanna spend your time."
- 33:12I think I'm in this weird place of I've been so client-focused for the
- 33:16last few years, and so I'm silently trying to shift away from, not less
- 33:21clients, but I'm still doing the work, but doing it in a different way.
- 33:26Mm-hmm.
- 33:27And so I have two competing to-do lists.
- 33:30I have follow-up over here- Mm-hmm … and then I've got projects for over here.
- 33:35And so those are not in alignment.
- 33:37So I think my body is like, "Hey, girl. Are you on the left side?
- 33:42Are you on the right side?" Mm-hmm.
- 33:45And so being intentional and thinking through priorities and where I do
- 33:49wanna put my focus and, and face.
- 33:53And that has been, it's been interesting.
- 33:56So that's been my vibe check.
- 33:58I've kinda- Left or right Right, yeah.
- 34:02All right.
- 34:02Sounds good.
- 34:04All right, Pam, tool of the week.
- 34:08Um, this one I think is gonna be, sound very basic, not even like a
- 34:12tool, but you and I, neither one of us could literally survive.
- 34:18I, I mean, I don't even know.
- 34:19No.
- 34:20It makes me, I'm like sweating thinking about not having it.
- 34:24We're talking about calendars.
- 34:26But it is kind of interesting.
- 34:27I don't wanna come across like we're better than somebody else, because I
- 34:30have been in that spot where you're like, "Well, I'm a paper person." So you walk
- 34:34around with like a paper calendar, and then you screw it up 'cause you don't
- 34:37have it with you and you're not digital.
- 34:39Um, but I do think so many people are operating, they're missing things.
- 34:44Um, they're just not diligent about putting, having a digital
- 34:50calendar in their phones.
- 34:52Y- yes.
- 34:53I- there's just… You hear if it's on the calendar, it does not exist.
- 34:58Yeah.
- 34:58And, and it's not even for appointments.
- 35:00It's, it's when I ask you, "What are you doing this week?"
- 35:03Or, you know, "What did you work on in your business?" They can't answer me.
- 35:08Yeah.
- 35:09'Cause it's not written down.
- 35:11And then they write it down, then maybe they don't do it.
- 35:13That's probably- … a whole 'nother podcast.
- 35:15But, and it's just, I mean, the moment somebody says, "Can you do X?
- 35:20Will you do X?" I am either on my phone or on my computer saying, "What can I do?"
- 35:24You and I have pre-blocked- things on our calendar Yes So like if,
- 35:28because our calendars are so full all the time, so if we do have, we've
- 35:32pre-blocked sections of the week, of the days when we're gonna interview.
- 35:35So we try to keep that open, so then if I meet with somebody and I'm like, "Well,
- 35:38let me see," we try to keep that open, and then we reserve the time for each other.
- 35:40Yeah, each other's afternoons we block two hours.
- 35:42Correct.
- 35:42We block some time.
- 35:43So a tool that if you just think you're gonna remember, and I don't
- 35:48care if you're 25 or if you're 65, definitely at 55 we're not remembering
- 35:51shit, but um Some, and if it's gotta start with the paper, then start with
- 35:56the paper and just keep it around me.
- 35:57I used to, what was that?
- 35:59The Franklin- Oh, your Franklin Covey.
- 36:02Yes.
- 36:02I'm totally dating myself, but like when I graduated college- Franklin Plan it
- 36:04was … I mean, I was just like- It's like fancy … it was just like all thick
- 36:07and you had all your things in there and you turn it around and you have special.
- 36:10It's so fancy.
- 36:11Anyway, I have graduated from that and now have my computer and my phone.
- 36:15But, um, please, please just block just stuff.
- 36:20If I could, a plug for Google Calendars.
- 36:23I'm sure there's other ones that do this, but Google, we, we run the whole
- 36:26business off of Google anyway, but I love that you can have different calendars.
- 36:32So like- Mm-hmm.
- 36:33I do love that … I think for some people, especially when you're new
- 36:35and you're not exactly sure how to spend your time, and their real
- 36:38estate can just get out of control.
- 36:41But to be proactive, like I usually can run like an ideal work schedule calendar.
- 36:47So, you know, it's got everything on there.
- 36:51It's got prospecting time, project time, interview blocks, all of those things.
- 36:57Working out and personal time.
- 36:58Yes, social media posts.
- 37:00Mm-hmm.
- 37:00All of those things that you're trying to accomplish every day.
- 37:03So it's like my ideal, like if, if I could create and just had total control of my
- 37:08time, that's what that would look like.
- 37:09So it can run, and then your calendar that you're actually
- 37:13doing can run alongside of it.
- 37:15You just have different color blocks.
- 37:17So the thing that we hear commonly, "Well, I can't go to that because
- 37:22I've got an inspection." Well, probably that inspection should
- 37:25not have been a surprise to you.
- 37:26You know what days of the week and you know what times that you
- 37:29should have your inspections.
- 37:30Mm-hmm.
- 37:31Because people want to not do the things that they need to do, which is calling
- 37:35and, you know, connecting with clients and- Mm-hmm … prospecting, right?
- 37:40So yeah, I mean, it's super simple.
- 37:42Run an ideal work schedule, then have your schedule and there should be
- 37:45some alignment there too if you're just intentional with your business.
- 37:49And then really quickly, so for people who do have a schedule
- 37:53and do have their calendar, you know what I've been playing with?
- 37:55What's that?
- 37:55Kinda cool.
- 37:57So Claude Cowork, you can attach them to your Drive, your Google
- 38:02Calendar, and your Google email.
- 38:05And in a Google Drive, I have my three lanes that I want, of
- 38:08my goals that I wanna focus on.
- 38:10And so I'll say, "Go to my calendar," if I'm time blocking, um, "and also use
- 38:16the three lanes that I'm working on for quarter three, and create a schedule
- 38:21on the calendar for this week." And it takes all the information and puts when
- 38:25I should be working on what and when- Love it … to make sure that I hit all
- 38:29of my goals for my personal sales, for recruiting, and for production goals for
- 38:35the team, and it makes sure that it's bri- breaking down And I also put in there
- 38:41that I'm a morning person I was just gonna say, I know you've taken that test- Mm-hmm
- 38:44of like when your ideal, um, time is or- And then, uh, I'm a morning person,
- 38:47and so the things that are gonna t-take more energy, which I guess,
- 38:51you know, that's everything right now.
- 38:55Especially if she works from 6:00 to 12:00.
- 38:57Correct.
- 38:58And then I take a nap at 12:00 too.
- 39:00With my eyes open.
- 39:01But anyway, but yes, and so it's been really neat just to make, going back
- 39:05to, because we were doing so much, I wanna make sure that the end of the week
- 39:08I'm tired, but it's a good tired- Yeah
- 39:10that I feel accomplished, and it's been really fun to do.
- 39:13So if you're somebody who's already working on it, play around with them.
- 39:16Don't be afraid to let- Love that … Claude be part of your Google
- 39:18world, because it's been fun to see.
- 39:20And you don't have to do it, but it was just been- Yeah … great to ask
- 39:22it what to do and what to work on.
- 39:24So everything I'm working on, that's telling me to do, so I'm
- 39:26gonna see how I feel and what I've accomplished at the end of the week.
- 39:28Love it.
- 39:29That's cool.
- 39:30Yeah.
- 39:30All right.
- 39:31Well, thank you so much for joining us for Real Talk Real Agents, and this
- 39:35episode being one of the questions that we like to receive and that we like to
- 39:40share during an interview, whether you're a new agent or an experienced agent.
- 39:44So what's one thing you want an agent, if they're maybe thinking of making a
- 39:47change- Yeah … so do you want someone to take away from this episode about
- 39:52interviewing a team or a brokerage?
- 39:54Yeah, I think just don't go into it asking really basic questions.
- 39:58Like, really do a deeper dive into- Yeah … what do you need
- 40:02in order to go to the next level?
- 40:04And then if you, when you get clear on what those things are, then be
- 40:08intentional with your interviews to see if you can find the right fit that's
- 40:11gonna help you get where you wanna go based on what you feel like you need.
- 40:14Yeah.
- 40:15So that's internal, and that should be different for everybody.
- 40:18Um, but again, we do have some, some great questions I think we've
- 40:22seen over the years, whether you're the interviewer or the interviewee.
- 40:27So if you have any curiosity on those, just let us know.
- 40:29We'd be, we'd be happy to send those, uh, those videos to you.
- 40:31Yeah.
- 40:33And my last takeaway is go to a team meeting.
- 40:36Go to a training.
- 40:37Oh, yeah.
- 40:38That's a good tip.
- 40:38Right?
- 40:39Uh, just- Feel it … feel it.
- 40:41Because we might think you're a fit for us, but we might not be
- 40:45a fit for you, and that's at any.
- 40:46So that would be my takeaway to that.
- 40:49So if you like what Pam and I have to say, which I don't know how you wouldn't, and
- 40:53I don't know how you couldn't have already liked or subscribed to this- Right?
- 40:56I mean, it's silly.
- 40:57But I'm gonna ask you one more time to like and/or subscribe,
- 40:59and we will be back for our next Real Talk Real Agents episode.
- 41:03Bye.
- 41:04Bye.
