Transcript
- 0:00Oh God. Oh my God.
- 0:13Nick, I think you have the better face for Ron Perlman.
- 0:16Yeah, I do have a large head.
- 0:17Well, also, you can do better faces than me.
- 0:19I figured I could just do cage.
- 0:21That's not a hard face.
- 0:23Yeah, exactly.
- 0:25Welcome to a special episode of Cage Match,
- 0:27Colin Aron, about way of meeting Nicholas Cage,
- 0:29Aron de Bout.
- 0:30Aron de Bout.
- 0:31Aron de Bout.
- 0:32Way of meeting Nicholas Cage.
- 0:34I am Sean here with Nick.
- 0:36I'm Nick and Peter, producer Peter.
- 0:39Hi.
- 0:40And we are doing a quick little episode
- 0:43about Nicholas Cage's new movie, The Retirement Plan,
- 0:46which did come out a couple of weeks ago.
- 0:48But I was in Portland.
- 0:50Yeah. And you were in Florida.
- 0:51It had a really weird release situation
- 0:54where it was supposed to come out like a month earlier
- 0:56and then didn't. Yeah, I got punted out
- 1:00for the next month. Confusing reasons.
- 1:03I who knows what happened.
- 1:04I'll never understand what happened
- 1:05with the release of that movie.
- 1:06Yeah. And then it came out.
- 1:07And did you see it opening night or opening day?
- 1:09Yeah, I caught a matinee of it on opening day.
- 1:12Croud of theater packed.
- 1:13All by myself, which was great for taking notes and laughing.
- 1:18But not great for box office numbers.
- 1:21Yeah. And I saw it with one person.
- 1:23So, yeah, I saw it with two people there.
- 1:27But that was Nick and Josie. Yeah.
- 1:29It's it's kind of a shame, I feel like.
- 1:31I don't know if it was just a lack of marketing or something, but.
- 1:35I mean, it's got no marketing,
- 1:36but it got a theatrical release.
- 1:39Like they put some clout behind it.
- 1:41I mean, we have no this movie was coming out
- 1:43if we didn't do this podcast.
- 1:45No. All right, then.
- 1:47Which is too bad, because honestly,
- 1:49the premise of it is pretty funny.
- 1:50Yeah, there's this couple who are trying to get out of like shitty gang life.
- 1:57Like the husband's a driver for a mobster.
- 2:00So he steals a thing and the hard drive.
- 2:03Yeah, hard drive. It's a flash drive.
- 2:05And or a desk.
- 2:07So he steals a thing, a hard drive.
- 2:10And in the process gets caught.
- 2:13The wife ends up getting the hard drive
- 2:16and their daughter out to her father's house,
- 2:19which happens to be Nicholas Cage, villains pursue Nicholas Cage rebuffs.
- 2:24And it becomes like this big action comedy.
- 2:28Lots of just like humorous encounters with bad guys
- 2:33such as Jackie Earl Haley and Ron Perlman.
- 2:36Jackie Earl Haley in his most mumbly role since Rorschach.
- 2:41Yeah, I enjoyed his just like very hot temper in this movie.
- 2:46He was on edge the whole time, but also just like the shaved head
- 2:51and the goatee with his sweet like crime jacket and club shirt.
- 2:56Oh, my God.
- 2:57Can we put this in the upper echelons of crime jackets like this?
- 2:59This is one of the best crime jackets I've ever seen.
- 3:01Like the alligator like jacket.
- 3:03Yeah, it was resplendent.
- 3:05Great performance by Jackie Earl Haley.
- 3:07Ron Perlman, just the dopey.
- 3:10That's Bobo.
- 3:11Yeah.
- 3:12Terrific.
- 3:13I enjoyed him a lot.
- 3:14His posture in this movie just made me feel like it was some kind of cartoon
- 3:19the whole time. How big is Ron Perlman?
- 3:22I don't know.
- 3:22How boy-sized.
- 3:23Oh, OK.
- 3:24That's a measurement I know.
- 3:27I did say this when you were watching it last night, though.
- 3:30Ron Perlman looks so much weirder when he's not covered in prosthetic makeup.
- 3:36He looks more like more of a muppet.
- 3:38Yeah, he's an odd shape of person.
- 3:41He's an odd cut of man.
- 3:42Yeah.
- 3:43So I've just found three different heights and weights for him, and I don't
- 3:46think that any of them can possibly be accurate.
- 3:48Oh, he's on the Donald Trump scale.
- 3:49Yeah, he's anywhere from 511 to 611 and anywhere from, I don't know,
- 3:53183 pounds to question mark.
- 3:56183 seems light.
- 3:58It seems light.
- 3:59That's my weight.
- 4:00My weight.
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:02So like Debbie putting on the short side, 30 pounds on me and I'm not Ron Perlman-esque.
- 4:09So wait, I mean, that's mostly head though.
- 4:11You got a maximum.
- 4:12That's my height and your weight.
- 4:15That's not right.
- 4:16No, that chance.
- 4:17No.
- 4:18Who else was in the cast?
- 4:21Oh, Ernie Hudson, Ashley, something, something.
- 4:23Ashley Green from like the Twilight series plays Ashley.
- 4:27Yeah, Ashley Ashley.
- 4:29She was the weakest performance.
- 4:30Do you think they just gave her character the same name as her because she kept
- 4:33getting confused?
- 4:34Who am I?
- 4:36Her character also had the least like meaningful screen time.
- 4:40Even Hector had better screen time moments or Christopher.
- 4:44Which one was Christopher?
- 4:45Christopher was the like final top tier backstabbing dude.
- 4:51OK, the dude that comes in at the end and like they give him the thing.
- 4:55Oh, sure.
- 4:56This movie has about too, too many put betrayals in it.
- 4:59Yeah, the chain of betrayal.
- 5:01Yeah.
- 5:01Everybody's like hooked on to somebody else.
- 5:03But not in a compelling way, like Burn after reading her clue, where like the
- 5:09absurdity of how many people are stabbing each other in the back is interesting.
- 5:13No, this is just like presented very business as normal.
- 5:16Yeah, it's a CIA thing.
- 5:18Yeah, I really did like the and organized crime.
- 5:21Like kid performances are usually pretty fucking mid overall.
- 5:25But Talia Campbell as Sarah, I thought did a really good job.
- 5:28Yeah, I liked her football shirt.
- 5:30Just football.
- 5:32Do you like football?
- 5:33I like football.
- 5:34I want to be a quarterback.
- 5:35I wanted her to say I want to be a football.
- 5:37I love some of those lines.
- 5:40I love football.
- 5:42I want to be football.
- 5:43Her interactions with Ron Perlman are fucking great.
- 5:45You've got to admit that they are.
- 5:47Ron Perlman is a gem in this movie.
- 5:50Watching Nick Cage get to just full on tackle like body.
- 5:53Ron Perlman was a lot of fun to watch.
- 5:55Like, oh, one of you probably broke a hip there.
- 5:58Yeah, this is so old.
- 6:00Still so much better than like an Expendables movie, though.
- 6:03Yes. Yeah.
- 6:05I don't think we got to the like actual premise because I kept
- 6:07interrupting of Nick Cage being a retired assassin.
- 6:10Right. That's kind of like the key key part of the entire thing.
- 6:13They said he's able to kill motherfuckers real real well.
- 6:17As long as the camera is shaking and not focusing on the action.
- 6:20Don't worry about that.
- 6:22You know, I've honestly seen worse fight scenes from younger people recently.
- 6:28No, it's true.
- 6:29People also die real easy in this movie.
- 6:31I loved in the boat scene, the boat fight with Ernie Hudson,
- 6:35just like how many bodies fall in the water.
- 6:38Oh, yeah, there were 10 bad guys.
- 6:39Yeah. 10 bad guys go down in that fight.
- 6:41Oh, what was it in the hallway when they're like trying to get into the room?
- 6:45You just have the wide range of like varying goons.
- 6:49My favorite goon is definitely goon who can't put his arms down.
- 6:53Because he's so so yoked.
- 6:55Just so fucking beefed out.
- 6:58He's just standing there like, oh.
- 7:00He like to turn his head.
- 7:02He kind of does the Michael Keaton Batman where he just turns his whole body
- 7:04because his neck is just one big muscle.
- 7:06Yep. As we all know, a strong boys.
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:12Little buff boys over here.
- 7:15OK, so what did you think of Cage's performance overall, though?
- 7:18I thought it was a lot of fun.
- 7:19I mean, it's goofy.
- 7:21It's super lighthearted.
- 7:22I did love when his granddaughter keeps asking him why he has two names.
- 7:28His response is, I'll tell you over a beer some day.
- 7:30The charitable way of reading that is when you're older,
- 7:32but he probably means tomorrow.
- 7:34Yeah, he was going to give her a beer for sure.
- 7:35And then in the next scene when they're having breakfast,
- 7:38she admonishes him for offering a child a beer.
- 7:41Yeah, he wanted to tell the story.
- 7:43He's a lot of fun on those.
- 7:44He's he's wacky.
- 7:46He's got the Gary look too.
- 7:48Right. He's got the Gary look.
- 7:49He's just a Cayman Island beach bum retired from the CIA.
- 7:54And it the movie doesn't give us a whole lot of like
- 7:59plot. I mean, the but it's enjoyed granddaughter's kind of the exposition machine.
- 8:03She keeps it all like moving forward.
- 8:05Yeah. I mean, I agree with Sean that I think there's a little too many like
- 8:08Chris Cross, double cross, double, double cross, which is if it's a double,
- 8:13double cross, it's just not across.
- 8:15Yeah, two double like two double crosses.
- 8:17It's an uncross. Yeah.
- 8:18That's like two negative positive.
- 8:21And parallel lines.
- 8:22Which are not crossed at all.
- 8:23No, not even sort of crossed.
- 8:24And they never will be.
- 8:25No, it could have done with just the one double the one mole.
- 8:30You know, and actually, I think like Hector's character,
- 8:32there's no real big reason for that other than the set piece,
- 8:35the big fucking mansion to have a shootout.
- 8:38Because she's supposed to be Jack Earl Haley's boss, but Jack
- 8:41kills her. It gets messy at the end.
- 8:44Jack Earl Haley didn't kill her.
- 8:46Yeah, he shoots her.
- 8:47He shoots her in the head.
- 8:48And then he gets shot by Christopher, right?
- 8:50Yeah. And then he gets shot.
- 8:52Yeah. And then he gets shot by that. Like the whole thing was too muddy
- 8:56at the end, even with two re like two watches.
- 8:59It's like, oh, also spoilers.
- 9:02I mean, whatever. Spoiler.
- 9:03I watch. You know what?
- 9:03If you wanted to if you wanted to know what the plot of this movie is,
- 9:06you would have gone and seen it, you fucks.
- 9:07Yeah, which no one did.
- 9:09It was a great movie, though.
- 9:10It was a lot of fun.
- 9:11I do want to point out, I haven't seen Ernie Hudson in a while.
- 9:15And him and Nick Cage are supposed to play like old army buddies.
- 9:17You assume around the same age.
- 9:19Ernie Hudson's 19 years older than Nicholas Cage.
- 9:22And looks a lot better than Nicholas Cage.
- 9:24Ernie Hudson looks good.
- 9:25Well, they had an age up Nick Cage, and I'm sure they died.
- 9:29Ernie Hudson's hair a little darker.
- 9:32But we got to see the band from Nicholas Cage's wig when he's
- 9:36coming out of the water.
- 9:37You can see his wig band.
- 9:40And also, there's a lot of shooting into and out of water in this.
- 9:43And I've watched enough myth, myth busters now.
- 9:45That's not how that works.
- 9:46It's not the best way to have a gunfight.
- 9:49Yeah. I mean, the whole thing, it's like it's fun.
- 9:51It's popcorn like you have a good time watching it.
- 9:53It's explosions, it's gunfights.
- 9:55Every motherfucker gets killed.
- 9:56The guy who gets a flare flare gun to the mouth.
- 9:59Oh, yeah. No.
- 10:00And there's lots of like entertainment.
- 10:01It's very comical. Yeah.
- 10:03That's the thing. It's a comedic action movie.
- 10:06Nick Cage hiding with his daughter and Ron Perlman,
- 10:09who is kidnapped, the granddaughter being in like the like hotel rooms next to each other.
- 10:13Yeah, it's classic.
- 10:14Oh, they're out on the balcony right now and switch.
- 10:17Yeah. New phone call.
- 10:18You also notice that no one ever pays the cab drivers in this movie.
- 10:21They just get out of the cab.
- 10:22That's how it works in Cayman Islands.
- 10:24I don't know. It's directly tied to your Cayman Island checking account.
- 10:28Yeah.
- 10:29Oh, that actually makes a lot more sense.
- 10:31I don't think that is.
- 10:33I was confused because I didn't.
- 10:35This is on me.
- 10:36I didn't expect the Cayman Islands to have taxi technology
- 10:40that included vans with self closing doors.
- 10:43Because every time somebody got out of a taxi,
- 10:46the taxi would just start backing away.
- 10:48And I'd be like, nobody shut that door.
- 10:50And then at one point I see self shutting door.
- 10:53And like, many vans have come a long way.
- 10:55Yeah, it's true.
- 10:56Even the Cayman Islands have self shutting taxi doors.
- 11:00Now, see what you have to do is you drive really fast and you slam on the brakes.
- 11:03Oh, OK. Slides the door shut.
- 11:05I've never owned a minivan.
- 11:06So this is I can tell.
- 11:08Well, OK, so overall, what do you guys think?
- 11:09Venn diagram.
- 11:10I think this is good cage, good movie.
- 11:12I mean, I think it's mid across, but it's a lot of fun.
- 11:15It's good for what it is.
- 11:16It's exactly what I was hoping.
- 11:18It is not my least favorite film of his this year.
- 11:20It's a late summer fun movie because he needed something to carry us over
- 11:25from one film to another.
- 11:27He's only putting out five films this year.
- 11:28I know, right?
- 11:29Six films, six films, six films, right?
- 11:31We've watched four already.
- 11:33That's right.
- 11:33Well, I keep forgetting Butcher's Crossing.
- 11:35Yeah, that is coming out this year, right?
- 11:36October 24th.
- 11:38And then dream scenario.
- 11:39What is that early November?
- 11:40November, or 10th or something.
- 11:42So good year for cage.
- 11:43Well, I mean, not monetarily, but good for putting out.
- 11:47Good news number. I mean, he got paid.
- 11:48He got paid for these roles and he had some pretty well budgeted movies
- 11:53like Renfield. I feel like that got a lot of love.
- 11:56I still maintain that sympathy for the devil is an excellent film.
- 11:59It's a really good movie.
- 12:00I don't think enough people got a chance to see it.
- 12:03It's a real power year.
- 12:04And I saw somebody complaining online recently about how they thought
- 12:09the dark days of Nicholas Cage doing shitty movies was over.
- 12:13I was real close to just coming back with like, motherfuckers,
- 12:16putting out six movies this year.
- 12:18How high are your expectations when somebody puts out six movies in a year?
- 12:22Literally every other month of the year
- 12:25could have a Nicholas Cage film release.
- 12:28Well, and then starring film.
- 12:29Yeah. And what is the expectation of him?
- 12:31He's not going to be a romantic comedy lead at this point.
- 12:34It's like he is of an age that he has to play a different kind of character.
- 12:38Like he's set into his own new bubble.
- 12:41Yeah, like from 2024, he's had some really good movies.
- 12:44A lot of like Art House and like Dark Horse movies.
- 12:47If you're getting a theatrically released Nicholas Cage movie
- 12:51expected to be like the studios know Nicholas Cage draws X amount of star appeal.
- 12:58I look to his independent movies, I think more for his best performances.
- 13:03Well, he would say the same thing, too.
- 13:05I mean, he he's going to put something different on those.
- 13:08And the reason he's doing them for I'm certain less money than he is worth
- 13:12is because he gives a shit about it.
- 13:13He thinks the script is good or the character is interesting.
- 13:16Or, you know, you you're going to get something more out of it
- 13:19because a person gives a shit more than a paycheck.
- 13:21Yeah. And I mean, we're looking at he looks drastically different.
- 13:25All six of these films. Definitely.
- 13:27There is a transition from like he's not just playing.
- 13:31He's not just Nick Cage in all these films.
- 13:33Less thoughts or go watch it. It's fun.
- 13:35You go watch it. Yeah. If you can.
- 13:37Retirement plan or watch it when it comes on streaming.
- 13:39But give it some love. I'm glad it exists. Me too.
- 13:42Oh, super final spoiler. What happened to the husband?
- 13:45Nobody knows. They probably killed Jeremy.
- 13:48Jackie Earl. Haley did it.
- 13:50All right. Cool. Thanks.
- 13:52Yeah. Thanks for listening, everybody. Yeah.

- 14:29These are beautiful football stats.
- 14:30You can understand what that means.
- 14:32Yeah, well, it's going to be the rookie football photo, like shirtless in our drawers.
- 14:36Or we're supposed to bring drawers today. No.
- 14:39My first car was a minivan.
- 14:41Nice. Did you get laid in it? No.
- 14:43Disappointing. Even I got laid in a minivan.
- 14:48Was it mine?
- 14:49Was it mine? Yes.
