- 0:05Hello and welcome back to another episode.
- 0:09Today I'm joined again by Charles for episode 59.
- 0:13We are absolutely motoring through these now.
- 0:16We are. How are you doing?
- 0:17I'm, I'm very good. I'm excited to be here.
- 0:20We've got some consistency on the podcast.
- 0:22I know for the first time in a very.
- 0:23Long so the listeners and viewers will be very pleased,
- 0:25I'm sure. Indeed, the reels are going to
- 0:27come out. We're going to continue to
- 0:29cancel ourselves on your behalf, especially seeing as you guys
- 0:32are now writing in with what grinds your gears and we're just
- 0:34going to take the Flack for it. So I appreciate you for that, I
- 0:37think. But today, we've got 2 further
- 0:40topics to talk about. We're going to dive straight in
- 0:44Harder fun. Terrible.
- 0:46So good. We're going to talk about the
- 0:48Enhanced Games because this has been extremely controversial in
- 0:51the fitness space for the last couple of weeks and we think
- 0:54that means it's a good thing for us to weigh in on for sure.
- 0:56For those that aren't aware, you can look this up on YouTube.
- 1:00The Enhanced Games put out a video where an Aussie swimmer,
- 1:03James Magnuson, you got it, decided to take on the challenge
- 1:07of breaking the 50m freestyle swimming record, which was 20.91
- 1:13seconds. And he decided to do that in a
- 1:16bet, essentially, that he could do it within six months of
- 1:19training if he was on all the gear that he had access to.
- 1:22And he wanted 1,000,000 Aussie dollars for doing that.
- 1:26And the Enhanced Games were like, yeah, we backed this.
- 1:28We'll make a documentary out of it.
- 1:29And so I would thoroughly recommend going and watching
- 1:32that. What was your opinion of what
- 1:35they made as a documentary on it?
- 1:37I've got so much to talk about and I'm, I'm glad this came up
- 1:40and I think there's so many controversy or controversial
- 1:45points that we can discuss. But just the first thing that
- 1:49jumped out at me watching this documentary was how good shape
- 1:53that guy got in. And like, that guy was in
- 1:55incredible shape. So for reference with the
- 1:58beginning of the video, for those that haven't seen it or
- 2:00for a reminder that those that have, there was a podcast that
- 2:03was going on in Australia and one of them happened to be
- 2:05friends with James. The swimmer called him up and
- 2:09said do you reckon you could break the world record if you
- 2:11were on gear? And he was like, yeah.
- 2:13Now he had been out of swimming at this point competitively for
- 2:16seven years. He was a former Olympian and
- 2:19quite successful swimmer. So he took it on and within that
- 2:22six months they put him on. Well, we don't know.
- 2:25This is something we're going to talk about.
- 2:27They put him on a bunch of stuff.
- 2:29He was able to then train twice a day without feeling the
- 2:31fatigue of training, he was saying.
- 2:33Yeah, he said something like he'd train twice a day for 30
- 2:37days straight. Yeah, like swimming and then
- 2:39land training or in the gym basically.
- 2:41And just felt fine. And in the end, he almost, I
- 2:44mean, I don't think he's become a meme, but he very nearly
- 2:46became a meme because he was wearing that speed suit, which
- 2:49really was quite tight in areas, and his lats just made him look
- 2:53like a tortoise shell. Yeah.
- 2:55Yeah, he's looked gigantic. Looked like an absolute weapon.
- 2:58But he's like a big dude anyway. And then but it's it's
- 3:00interesting because obviously if you watch the documentary, he's
- 3:03was saying how actually that extra muscle mass became
- 3:07detrimental to his performance in the pool.
- 3:10Big time and you can kind of see that when he when he's getting
- 3:12ready. So there's this big build up you
- 3:14kind of see him going through his training.
- 3:16He's with an elite swimming coach.
- 3:17They give him pretty much everything he could possibly
- 3:19need to achieve this. And then they get him into the
- 3:21pool. And just before he gets in the
- 3:23pool, you can just see this absolute behemoth of a man who's
- 3:26about to go and tear the water apart.
- 3:30And if I'm being completely honest, and I'm sure James is
- 3:32listening to this, it was a little bit disappointing at the
- 3:35time that he was actually putting down because again, we
- 3:37said the world record is 20.91 seconds, which is what he was
- 3:40aiming to be. And I think his first attempt
- 3:43was like 20 point 21.3. Or I think it was slower, it was
- 3:47like 23. 23 something, so he was like a lot off.
- 3:51So they went again and he wasn't that much faster and then it was
- 3:55all quite underwhelming. But then, but then what we
- 4:00didn't know at the time really was that they drafted in this
- 4:03guy Christian Christians is from a Greek heritage who's also
- 4:09former competitive swimmer had I think it's like.
- 4:12Greek. Hungarian.
- 4:14Yeah, I think so. His his surname, I don't want to
- 4:17embarrass myself by pronouncing it, but Charles told me that it
- 4:19was golomive. That's the only time I'm going
- 4:24to say it. Thank you, Charles.
- 4:25We'll we'll refer to him as Christian.
- 4:26We'll just refer to him as Christian.
- 4:29He then got in the pool and he had been doing, I think at that
- 4:32point some like 3 or 6, three, six weeks of the same program
- 4:35and they just brought him in and they just decided to show this.
- 4:38It felt like on the documentary that he was going to have a
- 4:40crack at it to sort of see his bed, but.
- 4:42Like he'd been swimming up until much more recently.
- 4:44I think he was at the Paris Olympics and could come like
- 4:47fifth in the final for. 53 he was he was clearly an elite
- 4:50swimmer, but slightly less out of touch with it and a bit
- 4:53younger. And he got in the pool to
- 4:55benchmark himself for when his test came along at the end of
- 4:58his 12 week program and just broke the world record.
- 5:01Just straight away beat it by .02 of a second.
- 5:06But for the fact that obviously his benchmark was like.
- 5:08Yeah, it was 2/10, wasn't it? Wow.
- 5:10OK, this is this is serious. And all of a sudden there was
- 5:13this like gravity of actually, yeah, clearly this enhanced
- 5:15stuff works because at first, I mean, I was there debating,
- 5:19well, this guy has done 12 weeks of gear, was an elite swimmer,
- 5:23has clearly got the athleticism at some point in his genes to do
- 5:27this and didn't even get close. Yeah, I think there's a few
- 5:29things you want to touch on because I think when you watch
- 5:31that documentary and you read about the enhanced games, what
- 5:34they're trying to demonstrate is that they can take anyone from
- 5:39any age essentially. And that's that's like the real
- 5:43shock factor when like a 33 year old or a 31 year old can still
- 5:46break world records, whereas maybe you might associate world
- 5:49record-breaking with someone slightly younger.
- 5:52We look at younger swimmers coming into the Olympics and
- 5:54breaking world records. So there's obviously that factor
- 5:57of why maybe James didn't break the world record after having
- 6:02done all of this immense training and like all of this
- 6:04doping essentially, or performance enhancing drugs.
- 6:07The other thing, if you rewind all the way back to the start,
- 6:11when they're talking on the podcast, they phone James up and
- 6:13they're like, do you reckon you can just take a collegiate level
- 6:16swimmer or someone who's a good swimmer and put them on this
- 6:20program and get a world record? And he was categorically, no,
- 6:24you like you need to have at least some experience in high
- 6:28level performance in the sport. You need like skill acquisition,
- 6:32you need experience racing. And then the other thing like
- 6:34you need to have mental fortitude and resilience to the
- 6:38level and volume of training that you're doing.
- 6:39So for me, it's it's mental because you're taking an elite
- 6:44level swimmer anyway. It's not like you're taking me
- 6:47and you're filling me for the drugs, throwing me in the pool
- 6:49and I can do a world record. So I'm kind of like, these guys
- 6:53are elite anyway, obviously. So I mean, there's lots of
- 6:56layers to it, but it's like for me just, yeah, there's there's
- 7:02some a lot of skepticism around it and like cynicism, which kind
- 7:07of filters into unenhanced sport as well.
- 7:09This guy was doping and only broke the world record by 2/10.
- 7:13Well, let me just Fast forward to the end of the documentary.
- 7:17If you are planning, if you're planning on watching this, then
- 7:19press the skip ahead button for like 30 seconds because I'm
- 7:23going to tell you what happens at the end of the documentary.
- 7:24This is your final chance. 321. OK, So what happens at the end
- 7:28of the documentary is we finish the training block and he gets
- 7:32back in the pool and he's actually slower.
- 7:35So he ends up, I think it was a few technique things that he was
- 7:39doing wrong. But when he was trying to get to
- 7:41the line and was he was reaching for it, he wasn't continuing to
- 7:44paddle through the line. And he ended up getting within
- 7:46about 2/10 of it again. But not not 2/10.
- 7:49Sorry. Two.
- 7:50Yeah, 2/10, obviously it was like 21.1 is the closest he got
- 7:55to it, but he didn't break it again and it just wasn't his
- 7:58day. They tried again the next day,
- 7:59still not his day. And that's kind of where it
- 8:02finished, which is a bit disappointing.
- 8:03But it kind of rounds off to the fact that it is very dependent
- 8:10on how you are on a specific time in your training.
- 8:13And again, kind of points, the fact that you have to be elite
- 8:17to even get there. And even if you are doing all of
- 8:21these different things and you're doing all of this elite
- 8:23training for a period of time, it's not guaranteed that you're
- 8:25going to beat a world record that is at the pinnacle of the
- 8:28sport. But then this is something you
- 8:29want to talk about without completely offending the entire
- 8:34elite athletic community. But it does make you question.
- 8:38Yeah, it has to like, and I, I go, I go, my mood switches and
- 8:42my opinion changes pretty frequently.
- 8:44But I'm definitely cynical and definitely sceptical with elite
- 8:48level sport. And you, you flick through the
- 8:51because actually there's there were two, the two different
- 8:53world records. There's the Super suit world
- 8:56record when it was legal to swim in these kind of like, I don't
- 9:00know, neoprene suits, They then got banned.
- 9:03And then there's obviously the JAMA world record where you're
- 9:05just swimming in basically trunks.
- 9:09But yeah, so it's hard to overlook the fact.
- 9:13And, and again, I appreciate that at the elite level of the
- 9:15sport, there's such fine margins when you're breaking world
- 9:20records, like 110th, 2/10 is in, in theory, not long, not a big
- 9:26amount of time, but actually to shave that time off is huge.
- 9:29And it takes a lot of effort to do that.
- 9:31I appreciate that at the top level of sports, like it's much
- 9:34easier to go from, if we use a running example, go from like 30
- 9:37minutes and a 5K down to 20 minutes.
- 9:40It's easier to shave off 10 minutes than it is to go from
- 9:43like, I don't know, 16 minutes down to like 1550, like to take
- 9:49off those 10 seconds. It's easier to, so as you get
- 9:52closer and closer to the elite level, it's, it's harder to
- 9:54shave that time off. But you scroll through the
- 9:56comments of that documentary and you're looking at people saying,
- 9:59well, it just makes it even more impressive the fact that these
- 10:02unenhanced Olympians are setting such fast world records.
- 10:06I'm like, there's no way. There's no way they're not on
- 10:09something that's helping improve their recovery time, their
- 10:14tolerance to training and whatever.
- 10:17Like there's there's in my mind, there is no way.
- 10:19And it takes me back to there's a documentary on Netflix which
- 10:24was looking into the serious doping issues that athletics had
- 10:29in the 90s and the 19 thousands. And I remember there was one guy
- 10:33who has become extremely famous for and has it's cost him a lot
- 10:37of money. And I think he's done jail time
- 10:39over it as well with the fact that he was helping elite
- 10:42athletes get hooked up with the right sort of drugs that they
- 10:45needed. But he has made it abundantly
- 10:49clear. And his underlying message was
- 10:50even now, if you think they're getting better with the drug
- 10:53protocols, that's because they are still so far behind.
- 10:57Sure. Like, there are so many
- 10:58different methods that athletes have.
- 11:00And the science is evolving so quickly.
- 11:02I mean, we're looking, if we literally look at like
- 11:04technology, how everything's got AI now, I reckon that 90% of
- 11:08people could probably go and speak to ChatGPT about how, what
- 11:12could a new form of drug look like and how could I beat the
- 11:15system? And you'd get a pretty good
- 11:18response. And I'm not saying it would
- 11:19guarantee to work on both ends in that you're going to get away
- 11:22with it and it's going to boost your performance.
- 11:23But more and more people are getting more and more access to
- 11:26the knowledge that they need to be able to build these things.
- 11:29And it's getting more and more difficult.
- 11:30So from my side, I actually think positively the enhanced
- 11:36games as a sort of an organization because, and that
- 11:41this also comes from where I'm like, I want to see the true
- 11:44potential of the human body. And I do understand and I
- 11:48completely agree with as well on a personal level being natural.
- 11:51I think that that is the beauty in sport is knowing that you're
- 11:54going up against someone with the same sort of tool set.
- 11:57The only thing that sets you apart is the genes.
- 11:59However, I think it's so cool to see really where the limits were
- 12:06of the human body physically sort of with it.
- 12:09And I know that kind of is contradictory.
- 12:12In the I think, I think I, I felt that as well.
- 12:14It's like it's it's exciting to see these absolute specimens,
- 12:18which they they truly are. They're specimens unenhanced
- 12:21anyway. They're like 6 foot 7 like in
- 12:23amazing shape, obviously have the predisposition towards being
- 12:28good at swimming. What that looks like, whether
- 12:30it's torso length, leg length, arm length, like they have all
- 12:33of it to be good at swimming. And then just it's cool to see
- 12:36them be elevated even more by this enhancement.
- 12:40But I think going back to your point where it's like the doping
- 12:44and and performance enhancing drugs, they're so far in front
- 12:47of actual organizations that try to test and keep sport clean.
- 12:52I think this is just going to contribute towards that.
- 12:55It can go in two directions potentially.
- 12:57It could help people understand how to do it properly and
- 13:02medically safely, which is like a big thing about this
- 13:04documentary. And all of these, all these two
- 13:06swimmers have like a massive team around them that are
- 13:09monitoring all of their health markers, whether it's bloods,
- 13:12whether it's like the size of that internal organs, all of
- 13:15that kind of thing. You have a full run of testing
- 13:18every day throughout the whole program.
- 13:19Yeah, Yeah. And so it's not like they're
- 13:21just being sent away when a specialist that tells them what
- 13:23to inject and when they are supervised.
- 13:27So it's like obviously that's being funded for the documentary
- 13:31from the enhanced games. But if there's this potential to
- 13:34have an enhanced games, you're going to need to be able to fund
- 13:38that yourself. And if you can't fund it
- 13:41yourself or you can't fund it to the level where you have all of
- 13:45that medical supervision, does that start to cross and blur the
- 13:49lines between, OK, this is actually really amazing and cool
- 13:52what we can achieve through performance enhancing drugs
- 13:56verse actually this is medically not safe.
- 13:58And there's so many potential issues, ethical issues evolved
- 14:03in in that just because of the the money that you need to back
- 14:06the the actual taking of the drugs, which is kind of like
- 14:09where my viewpoint is, it's like, I want to keep sport
- 14:14clean. Not that it is anyway, but I
- 14:17think this just completely blurs the lines between the two
- 14:21because you're never going to be able to have, OK, all the
- 14:24enhanced athletes go to this and all the non enhanced athletes go
- 14:27to this. And it's just like, does it take
- 14:29away from the prestige of going to the Olympics, for example,
- 14:34because you watch the Olympics on TV and you go, oh, that
- 14:37person ran 98 in 100 meters. I'm going to watch the enhanced
- 14:41game because this, this person ran 8 seconds in 100.
- 14:44It's like starts to ruin the prestige of of the Olympics and
- 14:48all of that. So I I don't know.
- 14:50Because here's here's a question off that, like in 10 years time,
- 14:56let's say the enhanced games is up and running.
- 14:58It is not an equivalent of the Olympics on scale, but it is as
- 15:01far as a competition goes. It's got the number of athletes,
- 15:04it's got the the different events.
- 15:06You can sit there and watch it. You have two things going on at
- 15:12the same time. You do have someone who is
- 15:15likely to run the 100 metres in 80 seconds.
- 15:17You also then have the Olympics, where someone's hoping that they
- 15:20get close to Usain Bolt's world record.
- 15:22Yeah, they're on the same time. Which one are you going to
- 15:26watch? For me, I'm watching the
- 15:30Olympics like, and, and, and again, it comes back to this,
- 15:35are you negatively influencing younger generations aspiring to
- 15:41the sport that they're training for?
- 15:43Because they look at, I've got enhanced games over here and
- 15:48then I've got the Olympics over here.
- 15:49Firstly, if the enhanced games offering you $1,000,000 for
- 15:53winning the Olympics, what are you getting?
- 15:55A gold medal? That's not money, that's not
- 15:58funding. Obviously I understand the
- 16:00prestige behind winning Olympic gold medal and all of that
- 16:03stuff. And I, I, I truly think that
- 16:05that's more valuable than $1,000,000 whatever.
- 16:08But in terms of actually being able to live off, you want the
- 16:12cash. So firstly you've got that and
- 16:14then yeah, I don't know. Secondly, it's just like, is it
- 16:18leading people astray from potentially what's right?
- 16:22What's I, I don't know. There's there's so many like.
- 16:24Ethical like another question and I'm not trying, I'm
- 16:26genuinely you and I ask you this question, but I'm not trying to
- 16:29cancel you because I will answer as well.
- 16:32The enhanced games no longer exist.
- 16:34OK, So on these two channels, you have the men's 100m final
- 16:39and on the other channel you have the women's 100m final.
- 16:41Yeah, which one you're watching? I honestly and like, I'm not
- 16:47trying to do this to like sit on the fence.
- 16:49It depends who's in the field for me truly.
- 16:52Like there's some really exciting men in the 100m final,
- 16:57There's some really exciting women in the 100m final.
- 16:59I think at the moment I'm watching the women's because
- 17:02it's just like it's slightly more competitive.
- 17:06There's a few different kind of rivalries that are brewing
- 17:10within the sport of short spring on track, but that's that goes
- 17:15the same for pretty much any sport.
- 17:17Like I flick on the CrossFit Games, I always prefer to watch
- 17:20the women's field just because it's typically slightly, just
- 17:25because it's it's typically the depth of field is a little bit
- 17:27better and it's a bit more competitive and fun to watch
- 17:31where often the men's is a little bit more one sided.
- 17:33But yeah, truly, it depends on who's in the field.
- 17:36And that's very similar to what I was going to say because I I
- 17:38want to watch the better race and across the Olympics.
- 17:41The thing that's beautiful about it with all the heat is you
- 17:43really start to get an understanding of who's good
- 17:45where. Whereas I don't watch the
- 17:47Diamond League every week. So I don't know if he's a good
- 17:49sprinter all the time. If there was, for example,
- 17:53though both races it's been keyed on is almost a dead cert
- 17:58that in both races someone's going to break the world record
- 18:01from discipline. I honestly would probably watch
- 18:05the men's because it is the fastest 100 meter time.
- 18:07Sure, yeah, yeah, unless, unless the women's time was supposed to
- 18:10be broken by like half a second something ridiculous.
- 18:14And I would watch that because it's the fastest time ever.
- 18:15And then I agree with you, I would much rather watch the like
- 18:19a competitive race, a competitive race where athletes
- 18:22fighting race aren't enhanced. However, the reason I said 10
- 18:27years down the line is because I think I would be like that for
- 18:30the next 5 years. Yeah.
- 18:32But then if it continues to happen where it's a world record
- 18:35that's not even getting danced around, Yeah, Then how quickly
- 18:40does my boredom in watching these races turn to?
- 18:44I want to see this thing get broken every single time I watch
- 18:46it and that's what my but. Does that not then get boring
- 18:51because it takes away from the novelty of when it happens like
- 18:53we see that? In High rocks, every week a new
- 18:56world record gets broken if some fall.
- 18:57Which is something we need to talk about.
- 18:59Yeah. But it's like, for example,
- 19:00what's this? This world record stood for 15
- 19:03years, I think they said in the documentary.
- 19:04And like a big part of that reason was because they banned
- 19:07the neoprene suits. So it's like, in essence, it's
- 19:10like that world record will always have an asterisk next to
- 19:13it. Obviously they had some
- 19:14similarities in the enhanced games because the guys wore
- 19:17neoprene suits, so they had that metric kind of consistent
- 19:22between the two. But yeah, it's stood for 15
- 19:24years. So I can understand why people
- 19:26are getting frustrated and they want to see it broken.
- 19:28But if every time you see someone run a race or swim a
- 19:32race or whatever, it doesn't matter, the world record gets
- 19:34broken. It's just like the novelty of
- 19:36that definitely wears off for me.
- 19:38I think it the point, and it's weird because that's almost
- 19:41against the point, is the enhanced games is to find out
- 19:44what the actual human limit is while being human.
- 19:48Even if that means taking supplements, you are still, I
- 19:51mean 100% flesh at that point. And I I do think the whole
- 19:56target of their games is to to find that maximal world record,
- 20:00but it would be. For me, really cool to see it
- 20:03continuously get broken until that point.
- 20:05And then like you said, there's the excitement about the fact
- 20:07that this thing might not get broken ever.
- 20:09When you watch it, you're like amazing.
- 20:10And that's really like when I think about Usain Bolt's 100M
- 20:14world record, I remember watching it live.
- 20:16I mean, like I've just witnessed history because I genuinely
- 20:19don't know if I'll ever get to see that be broken again.
- 20:21And that was really cool. But now it's been, it's probably
- 20:26been like nearly 16 years since that.
- 20:28How long that was that 2008 or was it?
- 20:32Two Beijing Olympics. Or Beijing SO 2008.
- 20:34I don't know if he broke it then after that he might have broken
- 20:38it 200 in Berlin World Champs or something.
- 20:40Yeah, I can't remember. So I think he broke it in I
- 20:42think maybe like 2010, let's say.
- 20:44Yeah, then it's actually mental. Yeah, so it's been 15 years.
- 20:47I'm kind of ready to see it get broke.
- 20:49Yeah, like Usain Bolt is incredible.
- 20:51But again, it's just like it brings me back to the scepticism
- 20:54around it. Why is no one getting close?
- 20:56Like, it's been a long time. So it's like it's obviously, you
- 21:00look at Usain Bolt and you look at his, again, genetic
- 21:03predisposition. He's a freak compared to every
- 21:06other short sprinter. The guy's tall and and slim.
- 21:09And it's just like, that's not how you would generally define a
- 21:12sprinter. And that's again why he was so
- 21:15good at running the 200 meters. And I think people, athletes and
- 21:19people would try and defend Usain Bolt from what yours, what
- 21:22you could be seen to be suggesting by saying, well, he's
- 21:26a freak athlete. And there are different, like
- 21:29there are people that are just built different.
- 21:30Yeah, Yeah. And I agree with that.
- 21:32I went to school with someone called Daniel Gallagher, who So
- 21:35let's. Assume he's listening.
- 21:36For sure he's listening. Hi, Dan.
- 21:38He when we were playing football in PE and when he was playing
- 21:42football for the school against other schools, was just on a
- 21:46different level. Like saw the game differently,
- 21:48saw all 11 of the opposition where they were at all times.
- 21:52Didn't he's be looking at the ball to have the ball in his
- 21:53feet and just scored a ridiculous summer of goals even
- 21:55though he's playing from central midfield.
- 21:59His brothers also very good at football professional careers.
- 22:02He then was quite clearly going to be one of the best
- 22:05footballers in the in the UK. He now plays for Dorking
- 22:09Wanderers. So he was different, a different
- 22:13level of athlete and there are other athletes that have gone on
- 22:15to be professional in rugby from my school.
- 22:17But he is. And like, I'm not saying Dorking
- 22:19Wanderers are bad by any means, but.
- 22:22They're not the Premier League, they're not the Premier.
- 22:24League, they're not Champions League, not at all.
- 22:26The interesting thing as well is you take him and you look at his
- 22:32younger brother and I would have thought his younger brothers are
- 22:35very similar level to him. His younger brother you might
- 22:38recognise more as Connor Gallagher, who is now in the
- 22:42England squad and he's a very good footballer and he's well
- 22:45renowned for it. But again, he's not the best in
- 22:49the world, he's not winning. Balandor's right.
- 22:51Balandor's right now. So it's really, really difficult
- 22:53because I at first would have been like, well, yeah, Usain
- 22:55Bolt is just a different athlete.
- 22:57There's not been an athlete like him.
- 22:58He's miles ahead of the competition.
- 23:00But when you're at that level where you're in the top 1%, it's
- 23:03so, so hard to be that, that much better.
- 23:06Yeah, Yeah, everyone else and we're talking.
- 23:08That's why it's so surprising. Nearly like 100 meter races.
- 23:12If I turned on the TV right now, it wouldn't be surprising to see
- 23:15the winner at some track in the middle of nowhere run it in like
- 23:1910 point O1, which is nearly half a second start.
- 23:22And then also, you watch races, pretty much every race since
- 23:26Usain Bolt stopped running. It's not like there's one guy
- 23:30right out in front. Like remember back.
- 23:32It's iconic to Beijing. I think that's probably when he
- 23:35set the the world record where he's like, he obviously always
- 23:38started a little bit slower, but through like the middle of the
- 23:41race towards the back end, he's pulling away, he's pulling away.
- 23:44He's he's looking round him, he's pointing.
- 23:46He's like there's no one even in touching distance.
- 23:49You watch the races now, everyone's with intents like
- 23:52super, super close. Everyone's diving for the line.
- 23:55Even when you watch Noah Lyles run against some of the top
- 23:57Americans at the moment, like they're all very, very close.
- 24:01It's like, how is there someone? That's what, Yeah, I don't know.
- 24:05And. Again, if, if you're struggling
- 24:07to think about the fact that, like, half a second doesn't
- 24:09sound very long, but just look at the photos of when he set the
- 24:11world record, how far ahead he was.
- 24:13There's no one in frame. Doesn't.
- 24:15Yeah. And like, yeah, there are famous
- 24:16photos of no one in frame. And then you actually look a
- 24:18little deeper and he's running with his shoelace United.
- 24:20Yeah. Like the guy was looking around
- 24:22like. Yeah.
- 24:22Pumping his chest and he actually, yeah.
- 24:24Amazing. And one of the things that I
- 24:26think everybody will agree with and potentially you saying
- 24:29himself is like how fast could he have actually gone?
- 24:31Yeah, and really put it down and tried to put the perfect race
- 24:33together. I do think there was, it was
- 24:37either the Commonwealth Games, which I don't think he could
- 24:39have been involved in. So maybe it was a world champs.
- 24:41The following year or two years after he set the world record in
- 24:44Barcelona, he rocked up and said I'm going to break my record,
- 24:46I'm going to, I'm going to put down the fastest time ever
- 24:49before started and got kicked out.
- 24:50Yeah. And I was so gutted, yeah,
- 24:52because I really, really wanted to see this thing happen.
- 24:55And that's something that we won't get to see.
- 24:58And again, is something that maybe the enhanced, I mean the
- 25:00enhanced game should be tapping him up right now.
- 25:02Yeah, Hey, get back on track. Yeah, that would be.
- 25:04Wouldn't that be amazing to watch?
- 25:07My question yeah, if you could pick three events for the
- 25:11enhanced games to cover now, what would they?
- 25:15Are we going like renowned Olympic sports?
- 25:17Not necessarily. But three specific events, so
- 25:21not like a sport, an event. I'm just, I'm a lover of middle
- 25:26distance, so I'd say 1500 meters.
- 25:29So if you go, hey, Jakobinga Britson or Josh Kerr, what are
- 25:32you saying? We're going to sort you out.
- 25:34Like how fast they could run would be wild.
- 25:38So I'd say 1500 meters. I can't say an Olympic
- 25:42weightlifting event because they're all on so much gear
- 25:45anyway. Like I'm honestly, I'm sure the
- 25:47more I talk about it, I'm sure everyone is, it's just a good
- 25:51way to make myself feel better about why I'm so bad at
- 25:53everything. Everyone's doping, so 1500
- 25:56meters. I'd love to see the marathon as
- 25:59well. I was going to say.
- 26:00A man would be really cool. And then something like what
- 26:05about rowing? Like imagine the the enhancement
- 26:08you could get from from rowing. But I mean, swimming is like an
- 26:12obvious choice. And maybe like any sort of
- 26:14cycling event, track cycling is obviously again like that's a,
- 26:17that's a tricky subject to talk about.
- 26:19I was thinking cycling as well, but then I'm thinking Olympic
- 26:23distance triathlon. That'd be cool, I want to see
- 26:25it. Across all three, I want to see
- 26:27the level of improvement. Sure.
- 26:29It's kind of like me getting three in one there.
- 26:30Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I would, I would want to do
- 26:33the 100 meters, the 100 meter Sprint, Yeah, I would want to do
- 26:37the marathon for definite and then I would probably pick
- 26:39something like the triathlon. But I would I would quite like a
- 26:42strength. But it's like, it's interesting
- 26:44to see what the I know, I'd love to know what you're actually
- 26:49putting into the body because it's like it's all cloak and
- 26:52dagger. They're all very open about, Oh,
- 26:54it's very medically safe and we're doing all of these things.
- 26:56No idea. But what it and and I think
- 26:57that's tactical because they don't want to promote it to make
- 27:00it like more accessible. But how are you going to change
- 27:04the person's stack between running a marathon verse, I
- 27:08don't know, shopper or like javelin, because you don't want
- 27:12to see a top marathon runner. Well, actually this would be
- 27:15sick. Imagine a top marathon runner
- 27:16like 110 KG. I mean like rice up to yeah
- 27:21would be unreal. Well, one thing that I would
- 27:24like to know more about as well because this didn't necessarily
- 27:27get discussed and I feel like it would change.
- 27:29And I feel like me saying this, I don't know if you thought
- 27:31about this, but you also find this quite interesting.
- 27:34I would want to know based on what they're giving them.
- 27:37And again, don't necessarily need to know exactly what, but
- 27:40if they come up with any new ways of training that they're
- 27:44able to because of this. And if that new discovery in
- 27:48training actually can cascade into undoped athletes and
- 27:54natural athletes. Does that mean that we could
- 27:57actually be pushing the bounds of the natural athletes because
- 28:00we've discovered a new methodology that wouldn't have
- 28:02been possible to really or would have been thought safe enough to
- 28:05try because it could have been seen as too stressful for the?
- 28:08Body, yeah, I think it's just like with any enhancement, it's
- 28:12just your ability to tolerate more volume.
- 28:14And I use the example of Olympic like weightlifting because it's
- 28:17it's so prolific. And these guys are going into
- 28:19the gym in the morning and they're doing heavy front squats
- 28:22and heavy cleans. And then in the afternoon
- 28:25they're going back and they're doing heavy back squats and
- 28:27heavy snatching or something, something similar like that.
- 28:29And it's just like your joints and your tendons and you're just
- 28:32general muscle and overall fatigue.
- 28:34You can't tolerate that if you're not on something.
- 28:37But what I'm not taking away from is all of these people
- 28:41ability to go and train hard. And I like to use Lance
- 28:46Armstrong as an example here because obviously it's very well
- 28:48documented. And obviously at the time pretty
- 28:51much everyone in the pro peloton was doing something in some
- 28:54capacity. I think it's safe to to to claim
- 28:57that. But why was he the best one?
- 29:00Maybe he had the genetic predisposition.
- 29:02He'd been training in triathlon and swimming since he was very,
- 29:04very young. So he had that kind of aerobic
- 29:07base already. But the guy just trained harder
- 29:10than everyone. Maybe his, his experience with
- 29:13cancer as well had something like nothing's going to be as
- 29:17hard as dealing and getting over cancer.
- 29:19So this training thing, this is fine.
- 29:21I'm going to push myself really hard.
- 29:22I can't say that for sure, but there might be something in that
- 29:24psychologically. But why was he the best?
- 29:27Because he was freaking ruthless and he trained hard.
- 29:30And it's the same with everyone. It's like these enhanced
- 29:33swimmers, Christian James, like they still had to train twice a
- 29:37day for however long they're still pushing themselves in the
- 29:40gym. And in the in the documentary,
- 29:42he's he's saying he's like, I've never been more dialed into
- 29:45actual training. Every single stroke in the pool,
- 29:48every lift in the gym, recovery, nutrition, It was just all on
- 29:51point. And obviously it was handed to
- 29:53him on a plate, but like the guys still did the work.
- 29:56So you can't take away from that.
- 29:58And I'm not saying that it's an easy ride and you just inject
- 30:00yourself with loads of chemicals and you become Superman.
- 30:04You inject yourself with all the chemicals and then you have to
- 30:07train even harder than you normally would and you have the
- 30:09ability to push yourself harder. So that that for me is like the,
- 30:13the combination of science and the technological advancement is
- 30:18what is kind of exciting around it.
- 30:21I'm just scared that it blurs the lines and it it promotes
- 30:25something that could be done poorly and could then dilute the
- 30:31I don't know, like the actual non enhanced games.
- 30:34I think one thing that is my concern with it is that it does
- 30:38like you said, if you're, if you know that that on the line and I
- 30:41don't know if this is going to be consistent in going forward.
- 30:43But if there's $1,000,000 on the line and like you said to some
- 30:47people, an Olympic medal, gold to bronze might not be worth
- 30:52that to them at the time. Does that then take away those
- 30:56athletes that have been possibly pretending they aren't taking
- 30:59gear to go to that because they can walk straight in?
- 31:03They know that there are a level where they could probably do
- 31:05something if they were given access to even more funding and
- 31:07even more of whatever they need. Does it pull them away from the
- 31:13Olympics and clean up the Olympics and clean up the
- 31:16Olympics in a way that ends up being really detrimental to the
- 31:19because all the world records are no one's?
- 31:21You just have someone who fills their spot, they go well.
- 31:24Oh, this guy who's doping, he's left the field.
- 31:26There's another space for me. I'm going to dope even more.
- 31:29And I know when the Olympic. Is what if we actually do
- 31:32discover through this that no one's really getting within 10%
- 31:35of those world record times and do we have to reset?
- 31:38Oops. Yeah, everything's got an
- 31:39asterisk next to it. Yeah.
- 31:41I mean, there's the potential for that for sure, isn't there?
- 31:44It's, I mean, it's it's interesting.
- 31:45It's like worth considering. That topic, by the way, great
- 31:49topic, enjoy talking about it. That came from a listener
- 31:52suggestion. Yeah.
- 31:52So guys, if you've enjoyed that topic and you've got other
- 31:55things that you think we should be talking about, then do let us
- 31:57know because we will more than happy to talk about it.
- 32:00And we both really enjoyed going away and doing a bit of looking
- 32:02into the the actual records. I'd for sure like and that
- 32:06swimming is not something that I had any real prior knowledge to
- 32:10other than maybe watching the Olympics and knowing some of the
- 32:13top level swimmers and some of the records.
- 32:14But like it is very interesting and and having a little bit more
- 32:17of a deep dive into the way they train and how they train
- 32:20swimmers, a psycho. And like there was some, there
- 32:23was like some top swimmers at school and at university.
- 32:25But these like same level as rowing.
- 32:28These guys are waking up at the crack of dawn to swim in the
- 32:30morning and then go back to the pool in the evening.
- 32:33And then sometimes they're doing land training or gym training in
- 32:35the same day and, and your training is literally staring at
- 32:39the bottom of a pool like it's, it's impressive to have that
- 32:42level of commitment to that sport.
- 32:43Another, another thing to plug as well, earlier on in the
- 32:46podcast where pretty much every episode, in fact every episode
- 32:49was a guest episode. I had a guy called Cairo who
- 32:51came on who was brilliant because he's openly on gear.
- 32:56I was zoom and bodybuilder openly on gear and we basically
- 33:00just have a chat about it. I'm I'm very neutral in that.
- 33:03If you want to take it and you know the risks, you do you.
- 33:07I have no opinion on whether or not I think that's a mistake or
- 33:09not. And for him, he made it very
- 33:10clear that he could be going out at weekends smashing all kinds
- 33:13of drugs that he doesn't know where they come from.
- 33:15But instead he's trying to do something that actually does
- 33:17benefit his life because he wants to do it professionally.
- 33:21And it was a really interesting conversation.
- 33:22He gives a little bit more details about how he trains as
- 33:24well, because it's another thing he highlights a bit.
- 33:26Like you said with Art Armstrong is just because he's on gear
- 33:30doesn't mean he has to train any.
- 33:31That's hard. Yeah, for sure.
- 33:32For his physique to change as much as it does on that he's
- 33:35still having doing the work. And don't get me wrong, you
- 33:37might have more physiological bang for your buck with your
- 33:40sessions, but you can't just like work half as hard and
- 33:43continue to grow so. For me, I'm just like, I'm
- 33:45concerned about the long term health benefits because there's
- 33:48like there's not all that much research behind that or evidence
- 33:52based like what, what if there's lots of what ifs?
- 33:55And obviously if you having, you're going to have to have
- 33:58your blood tested at least monthly and have some body scans
- 34:02and just like be on top of your medical side of the, the
- 34:06enhanced performance enhancing drugs.
- 34:08So that for me is like a little bit on the on the fence, but I'm
- 34:12like, if you want to do it again, I'm not going to judge
- 34:15you for doing that. That's your choice.
- 34:16I wouldn't do it, but you can, but just don't pretend you're
- 34:20not doing it. And that that's where like the,
- 34:23the, the moral debate for me lies.
- 34:25You want to compete in clean sport, but you're not clean.
- 34:28That's that's like crossing the line.
- 34:30And obviously it's like when you're in that bubble, I can't
- 34:33say that I've ever been in that bubble.
- 34:34But if you're at the top of the sport and everyone around you
- 34:36doing it and it's the way you make money, it's very hard to.
- 34:40And I think if you tell yourself the lie again and again and
- 34:43again, everyone's doing a little bit of this, a little bit of
- 34:45that, or this isn't bad because everyone's like, it's hard to
- 34:50see where black and white is because there's, there is no
- 34:52black and white. It's just grey right in the
- 34:54middle. But I, I then, I then had
- 34:56another thought, just both of the guys that were in the
- 34:59documentary, they'd both been to the Olympics like multiple
- 35:02times. Both of them had won Olympic
- 35:04medals. So for them, their career was
- 35:07done. They were entering retirement.
- 35:08They've done that. Part of it they've had the best
- 35:10of. Both.
- 35:10So it's yeah, exactly. So they've got nothing to lose.
- 35:13Ask someone who's on the fence of, hey, are you going to the
- 35:16Olympics this year with Team GB or are you going to the enhanced
- 35:19Games? That's a.
- 35:21That's a freaking hard question to answer.
- 35:23I think this is also like it's a it's a buffer for retirement,
- 35:28which some of them need. Yeah.
- 35:29And yeah, exactly. Jack, who's a listener, did
- 35:31weigh in on this. We put this up on the story for
- 35:33anyone's opinions. Jack came in and said, look, if
- 35:36you're not harming anyone else and you're not pushing for other
- 35:38people to do it, yeah, it's controlled in a Safeway and you
- 35:41have no intention of lying to people about it.
- 35:43Crack on. Sums up really nicely.
- 35:45I mean, that's really yeah, yeah.
- 35:46Should get him to Co host. We're gonna, we're gonna move on
- 35:51to the most enjoyable, I've been told the most enjoyable part of
- 35:55the podcast, which is the Grind My Gears section.
- 35:58So those of you that haven't heard of this before, me and
- 36:02Charles are generically pretty angry and get frustrated by
- 36:05things I think I'm. Poorly influencing you.
- 36:08I think no, what you're doing is you're just giving me an outlet,
- 36:10which I clearly needed. But last week we actually got a
- 36:13lot of you guys to write in with yours and that was quite fun to
- 36:16go through. So if you've ever got one, do
- 36:18write in. I actually put that up on the
- 36:19story today and we have had someone write in with theirs.
- 36:23Do you want to start with yours? And then we'll move on to theirs
- 36:25and mine. How many of you brought with you
- 36:27this week? I I every week I tell you I've
- 36:30got more. I don't want to show you my list
- 36:32protein cereals because we we spoke about like the the higher
- 36:37protein alternatives. I don't want to go down that
- 36:39route. Protein cereal, just every
- 36:43single one tastes horrible. And if you pretend to like it,
- 36:46pretend to like it, you are lying to yourself and you're
- 36:49lying to everyone else. Protein cereal is just trash.
- 36:52It tastes horrible. Just buy the nice Frosties, or
- 36:55the Crave or the Weetos or the Shreddies.
- 36:57I don't care. Just buy the normal cereal.
- 37:00Don't fall foul to the marketing of protein cereal.
- 37:04I agree but disagree. No, no, no.
- 37:07OK, so I think all of the protein cereal brands that try
- 37:12and put whey or like pretty much every piece of their cereal is
- 37:18designed to be protein cereal as in like we're talking about the
- 37:21ones that it's like balls or like chunks and of this like
- 37:24wafery thing. Disgusting.
- 37:27So dry. I just, it just tastes so bad I
- 37:30can't. Explain people their recipes.
- 37:32They're like, put milk in it, warm the milk up with the.
- 37:35Milk, you're just can't bring it in.
- 37:36Sugar like what are you? Doing just don't have it,
- 37:41however. Oh no.
- 37:42Here's a little secret, and I'm not saying it's healthy because
- 37:45it's still very full of sugar, same as most cereal, but ALDI
- 37:51used to do it. You love ALDI?
- 37:53Little nicked it. Oh, ALDI no longer makes it, and
- 37:56Little still makes it. They do a high protein fruit
- 38:00granola. And if we're talking macros, OK,
- 38:0527 grams of protein per 100 grams.
- 38:07OK. So it's actually pretty good.
- 38:09It is per cup. It genuinely tastes really good.
- 38:13But I'm also just. It is it like it's not going to
- 38:16be better than if you just had some like protein normal.
- 38:19Granola. It's not going to fill you up as
- 38:20long you could have normal granola.
- 38:22However, if you did want to get a protein cereal because you're
- 38:26obsessed with telling people you like having protein for
- 38:28breakfast, get that protein granola.
- 38:30I'm a fan of Sultanas raisins, so I drop a cup of those.
- 38:32And when I say a couple, I mean about a bag full on top.
- 38:35Yeah, it's amazing. Yeah, I'm, I'm this is it like
- 38:38it's an irrational grind my gears for me.
- 38:40Like if you eat it and you like it, whatever, it's just, it
- 38:43tastes bad. I I do.
- 38:45It's a bit like if you like coriander, you don't like
- 38:47coriander. But I'm just and I'm not having
- 38:49a dig at any protein cereal companies but I've tried a few
- 38:52and they all taste just like. I'd say that most of it just
- 38:56tastes not natural as well, so it tastes surreal and it I
- 39:03wouldn't also say that the flavour is quite leak, I would
- 39:05say that it's pretty bang average.
- 39:08That's almost like we rehearse this and that he's, he's
- 39:11responsible for all of that. Well I was just my adjectives
- 39:14and vocabulary is excellent and definitely not primed.
- 39:19I agree. For a first run of my gears.
- 39:22I think that's actually relatively tame completely.
- 39:24I don't think many people will argue against you unless they've
- 39:27got discount codes in their bio. The the one that we've had
- 39:33written in, and I'm so on board with this one.
- 39:36By the way, we've had a thing. It's Jasmine.
- 39:39Based on your Instagram name. That's what I'm going with.
- 39:42Qui Jazz. That's what it was Jazz said.
- 39:45It really pisses me off when people get off the tube and
- 39:49don't have their card ready to pay at the gate, especially when
- 39:52it's busy. I love this.
- 39:53So for context, for those that don't live in London, we've got
- 39:57the tapping system. A lot of people do it with their
- 39:59phones, but people will be like texting when they're walking to
- 40:02the the gate that they need to open and they'll be like 8
- 40:05people behind them. And then they'll like finish
- 40:07their text before they go to the card and just don't seem to care
- 40:12that their people. I don't know where you thought
- 40:14you were going, where you thought you didn't need your
- 40:15card at this particular point, but I could have told you 3 days
- 40:19ago that this specific point in your journey, you need your card
- 40:22ready. And you're not so frustrating,
- 40:25isn't it? Yeah, man.
- 40:26I think also just any poor etiquette around barrier
- 40:31systems. Just have some considerates.
- 40:34That's not a word. Consideration.
- 40:37That's considerate. For everybody else rather than
- 40:41just you, like you know when you go on a on an actual train and
- 40:45you have the QR code that you have to scan from train line,
- 40:48why is that so confusing for people?
- 40:51Pull it up, scan it, go through. There's people trying to like
- 40:55scan the QR code where you do your contactless payment and
- 40:58just like what you, what you thinking is going to happen or
- 41:01like at the airport where you scan your boarding pass.
- 41:04You know you're going to have to do that.
- 41:06Oh. Man, quick, quick thing because
- 41:10I need to get back to what the original grammar gears was, but
- 41:12people thinking that it's funny to print an oversized boarding
- 41:16pass for static. It was funny, and now it's just
- 41:19don't. Do that just.
- 41:20You're in the way. Going back to.
- 41:23That was a side gear glider going back to the original
- 41:26though it it made me think about something else that I don't know
- 41:29if I've mentioned before but used to be on my grind my gears
- 41:31nose page I'm sure, but I couldn't see it there.
- 41:34When you go to a supermarket with self checkout.
- 41:38Not that people aren't ready to pay, they just stood at the
- 41:41front of the queue, not looking at the tails.
- 41:44I'm stood here, I can see thrilled. 3 tills available and
- 41:48you're stood there looking at the one person who was in front
- 41:51of you, waiting for them to be done.
- 41:53Why are you taking half? An hour No, I get it as well.
- 41:56These these are like such little things that just.
- 41:58Daily annoy me. They do annoy and The thing is I
- 42:02will stare at that person. I'm just like, you're causing me
- 42:05inconvenience for the sake of just not being on it.
- 42:08I reckon there's a like 10. I think it's gone down to 10
- 42:10seconds. I would say that could also be
- 42:12generous. 10 seconds before I tell them where 1 is.
- 42:15Or you just walk around and go to it.
- 42:17Oh, I don't know if I've gone there.
- 42:18Yet I'd rather do that and talk to them.
- 42:22I think this says a lot more about us.
- 42:23I think everyone else is just chilled.
- 42:25Do you know what's Britain? I'm not chilled in that
- 42:26situation. I'm like in and out.
- 42:28I want to give in my. Eyes to something there because
- 42:31being in Britain you could walk past someone and go straight to
- 42:33the tail when there's only one available.
- 42:35Oh, yeah, and they won't. They won't say anything.
- 42:36Yeah, I would never say anything.
- 42:38No. Neither would I have had it.
- 42:39I respect. That's a really good, that's a
- 42:41good time, but. It's just also this is what was
- 42:43on my gramma gears but I was like it's not really relevant
- 42:45but now this is relevant. People who just walk 3 wide on
- 42:49the pavement or like walk slowly or or like stop.
- 42:54I'm like, walk on the pavement as if you're driving a car.
- 42:58If you need to stop, look, go to the side.
- 43:00Also just. Generally pick a side.
- 43:03Or do yeah or yeah, you'd be what people.
- 43:06Are in the middle. And I'm passionate and here's.
- 43:08Another here's another thing that spins off from this Wow,
- 43:11this is a real Ave. around my gears.
- 43:13We like going down a road and spotting things virtually.
- 43:16When people see you on a run and rather than them moving out of
- 43:21the way, assume that you're going to go around them because
- 43:23you're the one that's being a little bit more active on
- 43:25mobile. In actual fact, I'm a freight
- 43:28train that finds a really different change direction.
- 43:30If you step out or are in the middle of the pavement.
- 43:33I need you to move if possible. I'm not going to expect that
- 43:37from you because that I'd. I've had it a lot of times where
- 43:39I've like shimmied and then they've gone the same way and
- 43:42then we've shimmied back and they've gone the same way and
- 43:44you're like you're I'm running straight into you now as I.
- 43:47Say I would rather run through you and apologize.
- 43:50Is that classic thing of like, do, do and apologize?
- 43:52I'd rather run through you and apologize and tear my ACL trying
- 43:55to get around you. For sure slow myself.
- 43:58Yeah, I'm just. Like once an accident, 1's not.
- 44:00Just have some consideration for other people and some spatial
- 44:04awareness. I'm going to get off the topic
- 44:07of this road and I'm going to talk about my grind, my gears.
- 44:10My grind my gears. This week is a gimmick.
- 44:14Excellent. At least I'm deciding it's a
- 44:16gimmick and I'm going to show you and the lovely watchers.
- 44:19Sorry listeners, you should get on YouTube what I've got.
- 44:23I just got a glimpse of it so this is a good.
- 44:26One, this is a good one. So this excellent is known as
- 44:29the Omeus or Omeus headband. So for those of you that aren't
- 44:35aware, with the redevelopment of hybrid fitness and running, we
- 44:39are seeing all of the crazy stuff come back with fashion.
- 44:44Back in the 80s and 90s when running was popular, we saw the
- 44:47shell suits, we saw the sweat suits, everything sweat band,
- 44:52all of this. It's back.
- 44:53We have sweat bands and the ominous headband.
- 44:57I'm going to get her picture up here.
- 44:59I actually didn't know what this did.
- 45:01Neither did I, I went and looked at it today because I really
- 45:04wanted to know. So for those that are watching,
- 45:06you can see it. I'm going to try and move the
- 45:08iPad a little bit closer. I could help but.
- 45:11There we Oh God, a sign has come up that's going to grind my
- 45:14gears. This is so hard.
- 45:17This is a grind my gear. This is this is an ick actually.
- 45:21So basically what we've got for those that aren't listening and
- 45:24are doing. Well, let me have a look as
- 45:25well. So it's essentially A headband,
- 45:27but on the front of the headband are what looks like metal
- 45:30bristles that come off the front and specifically just across the
- 45:34forehead. Oh my God.
- 45:36Now he's just that reaction is completely raw because what
- 45:39Charles has done is he's zoomed out and he's seen the price of
- 45:42this thing, this headband is $204.00 for a sweatband, 204
- 45:50dollars. Oh no, If you don't want the
- 45:52cooling pieces, it's $25. It is $25 if.
- 45:55You don't want the moment she's wearing.
- 45:56That and what that means though is that the cooling pieces which
- 45:59you insert into the this well for those that seen it, it's
- 46:03like little squares of these metal bristles that you put in.
- 46:06That means that those are valued at $175 and you need and.
- 46:10It makes this explicitly clear in the description.
- 46:13Every product needs 20 to work if you don't have all 20, but it
- 46:18doesn't work. This is terrible.
- 46:20That's the face of it. I'm trying to describe it now
- 46:22let's actually talk about it. They claim that these bristles
- 46:28or these metal packs that you add on for cooling.
- 46:31What they do is they aid your skin in being able to transfer
- 46:36the heat more efficiently by providing a larger surface area
- 46:39for the heat transfer to the sort of greater elements.
- 46:46I don't even know where to fucking start this one this is.
- 46:48I've actually seen some top level that Marathon is wearing
- 46:50though it's as well, not just boxes.
- 46:52I've seen. Surely you're only wearing,
- 46:54you're only wearing that if it's a sponsor.
- 46:56You're getting paid to wear that.
- 46:57I don't even know if I have sponsored if I could wear this.
- 47:01I wouldn't get sponsored by them in the first place.
- 47:02No, I mean that. No, that is, that is terrible 2.
- 47:06$104. It looks like like a washing up
- 47:11scrubbing brush. It really does.
- 47:13And this is, I mean, we've got, we do have pictures of athletes
- 47:17wearing. Is that the iron cowboy?
- 47:18James Lawrence? I know, maybe I just made that
- 47:21up. I couldn't tell.
- 47:21I wouldn't want to claim who it is because I'm obviously I don't
- 47:25think much of them if they're wearing on.
- 47:28I'm joking. I don't think that decides how
- 47:29good you are as an athlete. You're just doing smart things
- 47:31with your sponsorship. But if you aren't doing smart
- 47:33things with sponsorships and you're prepared to pay $204.00,
- 47:36please no. One for that, check the reviews.
- 47:38Do let us know. And what we'll do is we'll sign
- 47:41up and we'll do a Patreon where you can send that money instead,
- 47:43and we'll do a lot more with it. They'll make you one of those.
- 47:47You'll make me. One, yeah, half the price.
- 47:49You can get one of the scourers. I'm going to do that next
- 47:52Skyrox. Maybe we should.
- 47:53Yeah, we'll just run with Scourers on our forehead because
- 47:55apparently, do you know what I would say that Scourers got a
- 47:57greater surface area than any of those Bristol things, but that
- 48:01really. Has been.
- 48:02That's a good one. Yeah, for sure.
- 48:04What could be worse? I just noticed this while I'm on
- 48:07the page. There are 11 reviews and the
- 48:10average review is 4 1/2 stars. I wonder what they've marked it
- 48:14down for? It was a hot summer in the
- 48:17Northeast and I had two full marathons to train for.
- 48:20This little headband changed my life.
- 48:23I was able to maintain my target paces in the heat and run in
- 48:26days that were way too hot. I also used it when travelling
- 48:29in Puerto Rico and it helped me keep going there for 10 miles in
- 48:31the tropical heat, where other times I've had to tap out after
- 48:34only 6. It doesn't do quite as well in
- 48:37extremely high humidity as it does more in temperature heat.
- 48:42The cooling sensation goes away after a few minutes, but it
- 48:46keeps cooling you. It's like a heat sink for your
- 48:48head. Absolute magic.
- 48:49So placebo. There we go.
- 48:51It stops working out for a few minutes but he was able to use
- 48:54it for 2 miles. If you can afford to frequent
- 48:56when he goes to Puerto Rico. Game changer.
- 48:58Thank you, Kristen. So might have been gone.
- 49:02I shouldn't have assumed, but yeah, it's no everyone gets me
- 49:07off. Everyone's going to agree with
- 49:09us on that one. Show me the science.
- 49:11Sorry, we don't need the science, Timothy has said so
- 49:14cool. Literally great from Timothy.
- 49:17Absolutely unbelievable. Right, let's move on.
- 49:20Let's move on The next the next topic actually ties in and I'm
- 49:24going to make it tie in the first topic.
- 49:27How seriously should you be taking your sport?
- 49:31For some people, I would say taking certain drugs to get
- 49:36slightly faster at something like Hyrox, it probably isn't
- 49:40worth the risks in terms of healthcare.
- 49:43It might increase your enjoyment because of the perceived level
- 49:47that you are at in comparison to other athletes.
- 49:49But I would say for example, that could be a bit far.
- 49:55But then this ties into how serious you should actually be
- 49:58taking your sport in general. Because if you look at what we
- 50:02do, you're a coach. I work in filming people doing
- 50:05sport. We both have an enjoyment for
- 50:08actually doing the sport ourselves and the training.
- 50:11I would say there's a large amount of times in my life where
- 50:14I've probably gone a little bit too far.
- 50:15I've spent too long training for what I actually needed as a
- 50:18benefit, but also was sacrificing things that I
- 50:20probably shouldn't have sacrificed considering I'm not
- 50:22pro athlete. Where is that line for you?
- 50:26So tough, I feel a bit seen. I think there's the one thing
- 50:31for me, and I'll talk from personal experience first.
- 50:34I think the one thing for me is like it's fun to feel like
- 50:38you're a professional athlete. And that's something that I've
- 50:41always aspired to be since I was tiny little, like I've wanted to
- 50:44do something professionally in sport.
- 50:46And I probably will say this about you as well.
- 50:48You probably experienced the same thing.
- 50:50You're like, I want to do professional sport because why?
- 50:52It's sick. It's a great lifestyle and it's
- 50:55like a probably a massive blessing and an honor to
- 50:59represent your country for whatever sport or do whatever.
- 51:02Obviously I'm not on that level. So what I can do behind the
- 51:05scenes is train and act like an athlete in as much as I can.
- 51:10And I think I did that a lot when I was younger, kind of live
- 51:13this lifestyle of being an athlete and everything aligns to
- 51:16that one goal. But yeah, as I've matured, I've
- 51:19kind of got over the facts and I appreciate now that it's never
- 51:21going to happen. But what I wouldn't, And now
- 51:25talking about everyone else, I wouldn't want to take that away
- 51:28from anyone else because in reality, it's just a hobby,
- 51:30isn't it? And you can take your hobby as
- 51:32seriously or unseriously as you like.
- 51:34Something like playing golf, I take that very seriously.
- 51:37I'm not particularly good at it, but it's like I want to take
- 51:39that really seriously. And when I go and play, I want
- 51:41to play well, I want to improve. I want to get good equipment.
- 51:45I want to spend time or invest in in myself to to get better
- 51:49weather. That's with lesson.
- 51:49And you don't have to be a professional to take it
- 51:51seriously, right? But yeah, I think where it maybe
- 51:56crosses the line is just like your emotions attached to
- 51:59performance, right? And again, I'll be a hypocrite
- 52:01to say that I don't get emotional when I don't perform
- 52:04at the level that I want. But yeah, I wouldn't want to
- 52:07take it away from anyone else. If you want to take your sport
- 52:10really seriously and buy the cooling headband, then you go
- 52:14and do it. All right, You go.
- 52:16And maybe that's the line. Once you once you buy that
- 52:19headband, you've crossed the line because.
- 52:20There's actually there's multiple sides to this where I
- 52:24agree. I think as long as it makes you
- 52:27happy. Do you know what?
- 52:28I'm going to apply gambling methodology to this.
- 52:30When the fun stops, stop. But like up until then, if
- 52:33you're enjoying, sorry it's not damaging your life.
- 52:35I think whatever you could be doing and other people.
- 52:37Around you, right? Yeah, I think it's a good thing
- 52:39to do. And I think with anything, and I
- 52:42don't know if this is because there seems to be a slightly
- 52:46different neurology for those that do like participate in
- 52:50sport to certain levels. But if I get the bug for a
- 52:54sport, I want to know everything about it.
- 52:57I want to get all the best stuff.
- 52:58And I think that is an issue when some sports are quite
- 53:02expensive. When you talk about golf, I want
- 53:03good clubs when I go and play paddle.
- 53:07I'm not I'm bad at paddle, but paddle I I assume it is just
- 53:12cool the paddle that you. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:14That is expensive. So expensive.
- 53:16However, give me 3 weeks of playing with a bad racket and
- 53:20I'm going to tell you I need a better racket.
- 53:21Do you know what's interesting? Actually I was going to bring
- 53:24this up anyway. You kind of like made the segue
- 53:27is segue. Sure.
- 53:29Isn't that what's a great sport, the thing you stand on?
- 53:31That's not what I want to talk about.
- 53:34So I was reading actually and it's about golf, but I don't
- 53:37want to make this about golf, but buying better equipment when
- 53:41you are worse at something is actually more benefit than when
- 53:44you're very good and having the good equipment.
- 53:45You know what I mean? Because like the the gap
- 53:47between, So it's like if you have a better golf ball, you
- 53:51have a proby one or proby 1X. Like the the technology within
- 53:54that ball is actually going to benefit you more as a worse
- 53:57player. You just have more to lose
- 54:00because you're probably losing that ball in the woods or lake.
- 54:02Just the same with like tennis rackets, golf clubs.
- 54:04You can tell how good you are at something like golf because if
- 54:08you go and ask about getting a lesson and you or you ask
- 54:10someone, are my clubs good for me?
- 54:12If they go, yeah, they're really forgiving.
- 54:14You're shit to golf because the clubs have been designed to make
- 54:17sure that you're. You've like gravity shaft.
- 54:21Cavity back your your terrible ability is being helped as much
- 54:24as possible. However, like you said, if you
- 54:27if someone came over and they were like, oh, you could
- 54:29probably do a sniffer shaft. All of this now we're actually
- 54:32talking about the fact that you're all better at gold.
- 54:34Most there are things that could help you, but it's not going to
- 54:37help you as much as like you said, all of that forgiveness is
- 54:40going to help a person. That's not very good.
- 54:43But again, this goes into another Ave. which is the
- 54:49standards within a sport. Because if we take it, if we
- 54:54take an example of walking into a public gym, if someone is not
- 54:57squatting to death, I'm past the point now where I, I'm really, I
- 55:01don't really care. You're coming here, you're
- 55:03moving. Depending on how you look,
- 55:06whatever you're doing, what you want to do, I'm going to assume
- 55:09that you know that you're not hitting arse grass and you're
- 55:12fine with that. Also, even if you don't, you
- 55:14don't care. Yeah.
- 55:15And like, you're not, you're not competing.
- 55:17I'm not going to turn this into. You're not like competition.
- 55:19Yeah, yeah. Go lower, however, you take the
- 55:25same person and they go to powerlifting me.
- 55:27Yeah, all of a sudden I've got a problem with it.
- 55:29Yeah, And I'm not a powerlifter. If you're not going below 90 on
- 55:32your squaw, or you're not doing the pause for the amount of time
- 55:34and you're not listening to the control properly.
- 55:37Or also put it in the context of high rocks.
- 55:40If that person then goes to race at high rocks, maybe I'm not in
- 55:43the same category or you're not the same times or whatever.
- 55:47They're not really a competition.
- 55:48Because in reality, in high rocks, you're racing the clock.
- 55:51Unless you're at the top of the sport and you're the elite 15.
- 55:53That's the only real time we're racing other people.
- 55:56You lose track in your wave as well.
- 55:58Who's in your way? You're not racing, it's you're
- 56:00racing the clock. But if you have a standard, it
- 56:03needs to be standardized and like it needs to be upheld.
- 56:07And I understand and I don't. Again, I don't want to make this
- 56:09about high rocks. I understand the sports in its
- 56:11infancy. I understand the judges at the
- 56:14Warble station are all volunteers.
- 56:17I understand because I've been in this situation as well.
- 56:19In CrossFit competitions, it's very difficult to tell someone
- 56:22that they're doing it wrong, especially at the end of the
- 56:25race. They're tired and you go no Rep
- 56:28and, and I understand that's why they're starting to introduce
- 56:30the technology for hitting the target.
- 56:32That's great, but it doesn't then help if you're not hitting
- 56:35depth. So then they have that weird box
- 56:38thing and whatever. So I come at this from from two
- 56:40different angles. One again, I'm not racing them.
- 56:43It's me against the clock. My time's going to stand either
- 56:46way. Whatever their time is.
- 56:48If they don't hit depth, whatever, I don't care.
- 56:52But from the other point of view, from the coaching
- 56:54perspective and like the standards and understanding the
- 56:57movement mechanics and why you would squat, it's just like,
- 57:01there's no point in having a standard if it's not going to be
- 57:03upheld. So yeah, but I I get that this
- 57:07was actually going to be one of my grind my gears, not so much
- 57:10the standard thing, but you should see my inbox.
- 57:13And I think it's because I come from a CrossFit background where
- 57:17like the standards are like a whole other thing.
- 57:20We need to talk about that as well.
- 57:21But the volume of messages I get of people sending me reels of
- 57:27high rocks, races of people not hitting depth, and I'm like,
- 57:30guys, just stop. I've seen them or I've seen them
- 57:33before. You don't need to keep sending
- 57:34this to me. So I have like a really thanks.
- 57:40I, I don't have like a solid concrete opinion on this because
- 57:45there are events like other races, other things that you can
- 57:50get involved in as well as high rocks that are policed while
- 57:54you're there. And there are standards that are
- 57:56in the rule book and they're not necessarily upheld throughout,
- 57:59dependent on the individual and fundamentally.
- 58:04Sometimes I get it. That defeats the point, yeah.
- 58:07But if for example, we have, and if we look at Cardiff right,
- 58:13there was an amazing 80 year old man who completed the race and
- 58:20he did it in some like 2 1/2 hours, might have been just
- 58:23slightly longer than that, but just unbelievable that 80 he was
- 58:25there like happy doing all of you got through it all.
- 58:30If I'm the Warble judge and he comes in as 8 year old, he's not
- 58:34breaking a world record, he's not going to win any money.
- 58:37He's doing this for himself. If he is getting not quite below
- 58:41depth, but he's able to do it with this 6K ball and he's done
- 58:45all these other sessions beforehand.
- 58:46I don't care. Yeah.
- 58:48Unless. And I say to him, do you know
- 58:50what I, I might do? I might be like just get a
- 58:52little bit lower for me. And if he turns around and he's
- 58:54like, OK, yeah. And he seems keen to be yeah,
- 58:56then I'll, I'll push him on it, Yeah.
- 58:58But if he's not and he's absolutely knackered, I don't
- 59:02care like you. Do you enjoy the event get
- 59:04through? Because the other thing, like
- 59:06you said, they're volunteers. I don't want to ruin someone's
- 59:09day and someone's race by being an asshole.
- 59:12That's where a head judge comes in.
- 59:14But also, I do understand that I don't think it's fair that I
- 59:19don't no Rep someone when the person next to me is getting is
- 59:23giving out no reps if I'm a judge and their person then ends
- 59:28up losing said race against the clock versus the person that I
- 59:32was judging who ends up overtaking them on the warbles
- 59:34because they were better or on the burpees, whatever.
- 59:37And it's the same with things like Tough Mudder where you have
- 59:42these assault courses and they're supposed to be a
- 59:43penalty. Don't do them.
- 59:45But sometimes you just get let through.
- 59:47And I do think that there almost needs to be an understanding of
- 59:52when standards are enforced. And I mean, if anyone from,
- 59:56like, high rocks in the administration wants another way
- 1:00:00of getting more money, here you go.
- 1:00:02What I think could work well in a sport like this is if you
- 1:00:05wanted to, say, have a qualifying time or have a
- 1:00:09verified time, you pay an extra £10 per athlete.
- 1:00:13And a judge is on every station and they stick with you for the
- 1:00:17entire station. And those judges are paid.
- 1:00:20Yeah. You are.
- 1:00:21You are essentially paying a set of judges to make sure you're
- 1:00:24holding the standards throughout.
- 1:00:25You get through and it's a verified time.
- 1:00:29Then if you appear on social media and you're not in debt,
- 1:00:31you deserve to, to be told. And to be fair, the judges
- 1:00:35should have been doing their job at the time.
- 1:00:37But if you're not a verified time, then whatever.
- 1:00:40And so if I went onto my phone and someone has just broken a
- 1:00:42world record over in Berlin and they've set a 47 minutes dead on
- 1:00:47a men's open. You want to go and see?
- 1:00:48Yeah, it's on Verified. Yeah, and cool.
- 1:00:51But you're not a verified yeah record.
- 1:00:52Yeah, I think that's how I would approach.
- 1:00:54It sure. But you still have the issue
- 1:00:57with things like high rocks and all of these other races which
- 1:00:59are outdoors where it's, it's not like a standardised course,
- 1:01:01like each course has its own thing.
- 1:01:03So it's also quite difficult and that's a whole different topic
- 1:01:06in itself. But I do think there needs to be
- 1:01:09an understanding within amateur sports in general of when it's
- 1:01:14OK to be that critical. It's interesting, isn't it?
- 1:01:18Because this does like roll in from what we're just talking
- 1:01:20about. It's like the people who are
- 1:01:22getting upset, are you just taking it a bit too seriously?
- 1:01:25Because if you take a step back and just rationalize everything,
- 1:01:29is this person who's not doing the movement standards
- 1:01:32correctly, maybe their feet aren't in line when they burp in
- 1:01:35a high rocks race or whatever it happens to be, or they're not
- 1:01:37doing warbles to depth or whatever.
- 1:01:40Are you getting upset about that?
- 1:01:42For what reason? Like maybe they got faster time
- 1:01:46and now you're upset. And I can understand why that
- 1:01:48would be frustrating for you, but it doesn't affect anything.
- 1:01:51It's not like you're on a worldwide leaderboard.
- 1:01:52It's not like you're making prize, Might you?
- 1:01:54You haven't lost the sponsorship deal.
- 1:01:56So I can understand why it's it should be far more standardized
- 1:02:01and policed at the top of the sport where if I'm seeing and,
- 1:02:04and actually you do see this, some people like borderline
- 1:02:08depth squatting, I would call that person out because they're
- 1:02:12one of the best, They have the fastest times, but actually
- 1:02:15you're not doing the movement correctly.
- 1:02:16Maybe that's why you've got your fastest time.
- 1:02:18So for the top of the sport, for sure for amateur level, it
- 1:02:22should be standardized. But I understand that there's a
- 1:02:24lot of moving parts for high rocks currently.
- 1:02:28So yeah, if if we take this back to, I know some of the people
- 1:02:31who listen like CrossFit backgrounds and whatever and,
- 1:02:33and train CrossFit. The thing that frustrates me
- 1:02:36most with the movement standards within the sport of CrossFit
- 1:02:39less so than being upheld, but they're constantly changing.
- 1:02:44So it's like the standard is never standardized.
- 1:02:46So I can do a qualifier for one competition.
- 1:02:49And typically the way that CrossFit comps work, you do an
- 1:02:51online qualifier, you film it, you send it in, it gets watched
- 1:02:55by a judging team and they verify it, whatever, get put on
- 1:02:58the leaderboard. But I can do one competition
- 1:03:00where the standards for, let's say, a burpee box jump over is
- 1:03:05very different from another competition for the standards of
- 1:03:08exactly the same movement. So it's like, just make it
- 1:03:11consistent. Get rid of anything that causes
- 1:03:13any doubt. It's like hand positions and
- 1:03:16head positions on handstand push ups or it just like just make it
- 1:03:20the same for everything like remove all doubt and that way
- 1:03:23you have no clashing of heads and everyone knows the standards
- 1:03:26and it is what it is. One other sort of perspective to
- 1:03:31take on this is when you are at such an amateur level that the
- 1:03:35refereeing or the umpiring of your sport is done on a
- 1:03:38volunteer basis. So I'm thinking back to when I
- 1:03:42was playing cricket younger or even like when I was playing
- 1:03:47other schools in sports and our PE teachers had to be around.
- 1:03:50How OK is it for me to get annoyed at that person because
- 1:03:53they are, if they are volunteering, giving up some
- 1:03:55time that's. Creating the issue I think as
- 1:03:58well. Yeah, but like if I I was a
- 1:04:00bowler, if I clear cut got someone LBW to the point where
- 1:04:06the batsman started walking off and the umpire saying I don't
- 1:04:09think that was or you're just contesting it because they
- 1:04:12weren't sure. I want to be annoyed because I
- 1:04:15have done everything I needed to to do my job and then whatever.
- 1:04:18And you're not experienced enough or weren't paying
- 1:04:20attention enough, but I'm not paying you.
- 1:04:25Yeah, you are there and you're doing a Gen. probably a decent
- 1:04:29enough job the rest of the time. Yeah, it's so hard, isn't it?
- 1:04:33It's so difficult. It makes my skin crawl when I
- 1:04:35see people shouting at judges, whatever comp you're doing or
- 1:04:40ref. That's that's actually one of
- 1:04:42the main reasons why I stopped watching football is just I hate
- 1:04:45the way that football is professional football is like
- 1:04:47role models to so many millions of kids turn around and start
- 1:04:51screaming profanities of the ref.
- 1:04:53And like compare that to rugby, which I watch a lot of.
- 1:04:58One person speaks to the ref and it's the captain.
- 1:05:01And if you want to talk to the ref, you go through the captain
- 1:05:03and the captain walks over. He calls the ref Sir, it's like
- 1:05:07you don't back chat to the ref and if you do instant yellow and
- 1:05:10you see like the difference between getting yellow carded in
- 1:05:12a rugby game, the player already knows that they've done
- 1:05:15something wrong. They literally accept it.
- 1:05:17They're probably already walking off yellow card football yellow
- 1:05:20card. I'm going to shout at the ref.
- 1:05:22What he what's he going to do? He's going to upgrade it to a
- 1:05:24red. I don't understand the shouting
- 1:05:27and just like the theatrics around rolling around on the
- 1:05:29floor. I just.
- 1:05:30Want one step further than rugby as well?
- 1:05:32One of my favorite things when I was playing American football
- 1:05:36and in American sports, they're they're hot on this is, yeah,
- 1:05:41talking to the referee. So in rugby, you might get away
- 1:05:43with saying one or two things or not speaking at the ref.
- 1:05:45You might just be like, oh, boys, this ref's a joke, right?
- 1:05:48You might get a warning, you might get nothing for it if the
- 1:05:50refs are being alright. 5 meters or something.
- 1:05:53But in in American football, you could be like, the refs are
- 1:05:55fucking blind, whatever. Cool.
- 1:05:57Your whole team has gone back 10 yards instantly do it again.
- 1:06:01Your whole team's gone back another 10 yards, do it again.
- 1:06:04And and now you might be coming off the pitch.
- 1:06:06Your coach has probably already pulled you off because you just
- 1:06:08did detriment to the team. And I remember, I mean, we
- 1:06:11played some games where we played pretty well on paper.
- 1:06:14We'd sit down and our coach would be like, yeah, we lost 90
- 1:06:16yards to penalties because XY and Z wouldn't sharp.
- 1:06:20We can't be doing it. And The thing is, well, you can
- 1:06:22get penalized when you're not on the field.
- 1:06:24So if there were if there was a referee who decided that
- 1:06:28something was a fair catch from their team when there was all
- 1:06:33sorts of stuff that they did before this catch.
- 1:06:35And you were like, surely you saw him do the sideline cool.
- 1:06:39Your whole team's gone back 15 yards.
- 1:06:41You and you didn't you weren't even on the field.
- 1:06:43And I think that's brilliant. Yeah.
- 1:06:46It just, it honestly cuts the bullshit out of the small very
- 1:06:50quickly when it gets going. And in a in a big game where you
- 1:06:52have a back and forth, like it's cringe to call it a game of
- 1:06:56inches, but you can lose your team the game.
- 1:06:59But just poor discipline, yeah, for sure.
- 1:07:02And yeah, and. But I'm like, it's so easy to
- 1:07:04sit here and say that now because like the amount of times
- 1:07:08that I've said something to the ref was like muttered something
- 1:07:11under my breath and got in trouble for it just because like
- 1:07:13being inherently competitive, it's so frustrating in the
- 1:07:16moment and you can't rationalize it.
- 1:07:19Whereas actually in the grand scheme of things, it's not that
- 1:07:21deep. And you're just like the poor
- 1:07:23ref I've just screamed at. It was like just a normal guy
- 1:07:25who who's doing us a favour by reffing.
- 1:07:28But yeah, it's what it is. But yeah, just if you take
- 1:07:31anything away from this, it's like don't scream at your poor
- 1:07:33judge. They're doing their best.
- 1:07:35And if they're if they're calling a no Rep, it's taking
- 1:07:37you more time to spin round, scream at them to argue the
- 1:07:41point rather than just doing another Rep.
- 1:07:44Yeah, and and you're probably not going to run for this years
- 1:07:46down the line. I'm trying to think of an
- 1:07:47example where I've been penalized.
- 1:07:48I can't think of one, but I know that I was getting annoyed by
- 1:07:51things. Same, same current.
- 1:07:54OK. Maybe if I'm the worst guy, but
- 1:07:56I'm aware. And I I almost forgot we we need
- 1:08:00to do the rocks. We're getting carried.
- 1:08:02Away for those that didn't watch the last episode we did name as
- 1:08:08many as you can. It was it was good fun actually.
- 1:08:11One thing I need to pick up on if anyone's come here from the
- 1:08:13TikTok video where Charles successfully named 12 Formula
- 1:08:18One. You said you're really happy
- 1:08:20about our performance. Yeah.
- 1:08:21TikTok thought you were a joke. Really.
- 1:08:24TikTok was disappointed we didn't start at 40 odd names.
- 1:08:27I'm so glad I don't have TikTok. And I, I was, I, I'd reply to
- 1:08:30one of them like if it's quite impressive if you can name 40
- 1:08:33people in 60 seconds without repeating yourself, let alone
- 1:08:36drivers champs keep their warriors get.
- 1:08:38In front of the camera, get under the.
- 1:08:39Pressure exactly. Like what?
- 1:08:42How am I supposed to name 40 world drivers champions?
- 1:08:44Someone was just like, why wouldn't you just name all the
- 1:08:45world drivers champions? Well, because I can't just think
- 1:08:48of them like that, even though I'm a big fan of the sport.
- 1:08:50Yeah, anyway, it doesn't work like that.
- 1:08:52Anyway, I've used that guy. Oh.
- 1:08:56Behind the scenes stuff, I think it was on like 2 1/2 thousand.
- 1:08:59There you go, There you go. Follow on on.
- 1:09:02TikTok. So what we're doing this time,
- 1:09:05well, you're bringing it technically this time.
- 1:09:07What are we doing that's different?
- 1:09:0921 questions this time. So the aim being that you guys
- 1:09:13are listening is can see if you can beat us to the answer.
- 1:09:17Are you going to start off asking questions or are you
- 1:09:19going to start off with a thing I have?
- 1:09:23Something I have the something you have, and you're going to
- 1:09:25ask the 21 questions and see if you can get the thing within
- 1:09:29that time. I think I can get it in one
- 1:09:30question. I don't think you can.
- 1:09:34OK, you ready? If you can, it's just going to
- 1:09:38be so bad if you get this in one question that podcasts have
- 1:09:41done. Cool, it's give me £1,000,000.
- 1:09:44No. That means I'm so getting this.
- 1:09:46OK, You ready? Yeah, let's go.
- 1:09:48Is it a Bosu ball? It's so funny that I thought
- 1:09:53about doing that itself. For sure I was going to do that.
- 1:09:56I was like, no, no, it's not. That was very good, though.
- 1:10:00OK, that was a good guess. Is it alive?
- 1:10:03Yes. Wait, you're both so ball counts
- 1:10:07questions. You've got to you're honestly.
- 1:10:09So it is alive. Is it an animal?
- 1:10:14Yes. That was a hell of a pause.
- 1:10:19Is it something else as well as an animal?
- 1:10:22No. OK, Does it have 4 legs?
- 1:10:27No, Have two legs. Yeah, I'm going to ask this can
- 1:10:31count as a question, but are you being annoying?
- 1:10:33Because it does have two legs, but it's also got more legs.
- 1:10:36So has it got like, I don't know.
- 1:10:37I was going to say, has it got three legs?
- 1:10:40Technicalities. That's technicality.
- 1:10:41So it's got 2 legs. I think also I was being
- 1:10:46annoying with the animal one as well.
- 1:10:49OK, Is it a person? Yes.
- 1:10:50Oh OK, glad we cleared that up. I've lost count.
- 1:10:55OK. So next question I'm going to go
- 1:10:57with is, so they are alive, are they a famous athlete?
- 1:11:05Yes. Do they do a sport where running
- 1:11:09is involved? Yes.
- 1:11:13I think we're on like 8 or 9. Yeah, yeah, I'm losing count.
- 1:11:16OK, we'll say. We'll say I'm on 9.
- 1:11:18OK. That was very fair of you.
- 1:11:21Are they a champion at their sport?
- 1:11:24Yes. Currently.
- 1:11:29Yeah. So that's 11 or male.
- 1:11:34Ori lives forever. Are they male?
- 1:11:36No. What the PC of thing of me would
- 1:11:43be to ask if they're female or what do they identify as?
- 1:11:47But I'm going to I can't speak on their behalf.
- 1:11:48I'm going to take, I'm going to take the fact that they're not
- 1:11:51male. I'm going to ask, does she they
- 1:11:57play tennis? Yes, how have you gone for that
- 1:12:03man? Is it Serena?
- 1:12:05Williams It isn't. Is it Venus Williams No, that's
- 1:12:08those are waste questions. I wasn't even pouncing but we're
- 1:12:12on like 12 something now. No, we're on way more now.
- 1:12:15We're on like 14 all right. You're just like, I'm going to
- 1:12:21now name every female tennis player that I know.
- 1:12:23I want to do that, yeah. But my my knowledge of tennis
- 1:12:27recently in the last few years has been really bad.
- 1:12:29So. This.
- 1:12:30This hasn't been good. Did she win Roland Garros?
- 1:12:36No. Has she?
- 1:12:39Has she won a major this year? No.
- 1:12:41OK, is she English? Yes.
- 1:12:46Oh shit. Because I really shouldn't I?
- 1:12:50Well, again, technicalities. Technicalities on If you're
- 1:12:53English, she her. She plays under the nationality
- 1:12:57of Great Britain. Oh, I wish, I wish you hadn't
- 1:13:02done this because I'm really, really struggling for oh.
- 1:13:05You're going to kid yourself as well.
- 1:13:07I know, I think, I think I know who it is.
- 1:13:09I've genuinely forgotten her name.
- 1:13:14But the remaining questions? I don't even know what question
- 1:13:17we're on SO. Let's say 16.
- 1:13:19OK, five questions left. Does her name begin with L?
- 1:13:26No. Cool.
- 1:13:30Out of all the questions you could have asked you just no,
- 1:13:34OK, I'm not. There needs to be.
- 1:13:35Like yes or no questions I can't ask you.
- 1:13:38For like, yeah, well, I'm not going to give you anything.
- 1:13:43Everyone's screaming at home. I know it.
- 1:13:45You know, they know it. I know it.
- 1:13:47I just don't know it at the same time because I'm trying to.
- 1:13:53I all I know at this point is I'm going for a name of the
- 1:13:55person that I can see in my head and her name has just so it is
- 1:14:01so far out of my head. At the same time is is really
- 1:14:04really annoying. It's her first name.
- 1:14:13Speaking with an E, yes I feel like it's not Oh no I see.
- 1:14:26This is really annoying because I also don't want to take so
- 1:14:28long that people just tune off the podcast.
- 1:14:30Especially because everyone at home listening knows exactly who
- 1:14:33I'm talking about. Yeah, I kind of want to give up
- 1:14:40because. No, you've got to take more
- 1:14:41questions. I know.
- 1:14:44You can't give up. It's not I.
- 1:14:49Don't think it's Emma. It's Emma.
- 1:14:54Is it Emma? What kind of question?
- 1:14:57Yes, first name is Emma. Great.
- 1:14:59I'm 50% of the way. I've got Emma and for some
- 1:15:03reason I can. You just, you should have just
- 1:15:05been like, Oh my God, it's Emma. Yeah.
- 1:15:07And then just. Confidently just been.
- 1:15:09Like, you know Emma. You know Emma.
- 1:15:12Everyone knows Emma but me right now.
- 1:15:13Come on. Just her second name.
- 1:15:21We give it out. I've got 1.
- 1:15:25Why have you got that in your head?
- 1:15:26I don't know, I'm an absolute failure and I sincerely
- 1:15:33apologize to everyone listening. I kind of just want to put you
- 1:15:41out of your misery. I really kind of want you to,
- 1:15:43because I know that I think her surname isn't.
- 1:15:47It doesn't begin with L. It doesn't begin with Li.
- 1:15:49Don't think it's like classically British, which is
- 1:15:50what's throwing me off and making it really hard for me to
- 1:15:53remember. You would be correct just.
- 1:16:00Put me out of my misery. Radicani, fuck's sake, because
- 1:16:03you asked so few actual questions, you just spent the
- 1:16:05time like trying to remember this person's name.
- 1:16:08I was getting and do you know what?
- 1:16:09Do you know what makes no sense? I was getting her surname
- 1:16:12confused with a famous actor's surname.
- 1:16:15And she's been in some big films.
- 1:16:17And I, I something like radical kind of came into my head and I
- 1:16:20was like, no, that's the actor. You'd be gutted.
- 1:16:24But I also now can't remember. The actress's name?
- 1:16:27Fine. OK, well that was disastrous.
- 1:16:30Sorry for everyone, but it's now your turn.
- 1:16:34I'm excited and hopefully I can do a better job.
- 1:16:37I've got two things I want to pick between, and based on that,
- 1:16:40I kind of want to pick the harder one.
- 1:16:42So I have to put you out of your misery.
- 1:16:44But that would also make the episodes.
- 1:16:45Started longer. Everyone's like, go for the
- 1:16:48easier one. Yeah, I'll let this episode be
- 1:16:50done. OK, I'm going to go for the
- 1:16:52easier 1 and I'm going to say I've got it.
- 1:16:57OK, so now you can start asking questions.
- 1:17:01Is it an animal? No.
- 1:17:12Do you have one? No.
- 1:17:17You can own it though. Yes.
- 1:17:22Do I have one? No.
- 1:17:25Would I be embarrassed if I had one?
- 1:17:27No. Oh, Is it made out of metal?
- 1:17:37Yes. Is it hard to obtain?
- 1:17:44Yes. Can you buy it?
- 1:17:45No, You earn it. Yes.
- 1:17:55It's not just metal. Doesn't it has other materials?
- 1:17:59Yes, 10 questions so far. Does it come in a variety of
- 1:18:05metals? Yes.
- 1:18:07Are the metals precious? Yeah.
- 1:18:12The the metals come in different colours, Yes.
- 1:18:16Is it a medal? Yes, but you want a specific
- 1:18:21title medal. Is it 1 because you got that?
- 1:18:23Is it an Olympic medal? Yes.
- 1:18:27What more do you want from me? It's the Olympic gold medal.
- 1:18:30No. Oh, so it's it's this.
- 1:18:33OK. What?
- 1:18:34What's that? That's 1616.
- 1:18:37So we've got an Olympic medal. And you want more detail than
- 1:18:40that? Yeah.
- 1:18:43Is the medal associated with a specific sport?
- 1:18:45No. Is the medal associated to a
- 1:18:51specific Olympics? No.
- 1:18:58Right. You've thrown me now.
- 1:19:00I was, I was, I was, I was banking like just being a medal.
- 1:19:03And you're like, yeah, Oh my God, you got it.
- 1:19:04I'm taking. A bit of a Dick, yeah.
- 1:19:06You have basically gone. You have basically.
- 1:19:08So I've got an Olympic medal that's not specific to a sport.
- 1:19:14Is it a specific position? Yes, OK, you're 19.
- 1:19:20Oh, so. And it's already not a gold
- 1:19:23medal? No.
- 1:19:24Is it an Olympic silver medal? Yeah.
- 1:19:26Come on. I was hoping through your shoe
- 1:19:30measures you'd go gold. Is it Olympic gold medal?
- 1:19:32I go no and that would throw you so far off you would go away
- 1:19:34from it. Damn you actually got to medal
- 1:19:37within like 9 questions. Yeah, I was quite pleased with
- 1:19:39that. That was annoying because.
- 1:19:41After like 2-3 questions I was like, I have no idea what this
- 1:19:43could be. Yeah, objects are way harder
- 1:19:46than people because there's just so many.
- 1:19:49Way easier by the looks of. It no, but I'm very good at the
- 1:19:52game. I can let you go again if you
- 1:19:55want. I can let you do the hard no.
- 1:19:57I've got. I had I had the best one in my
- 1:19:59head if we were going to do another one.
- 1:20:02Go on, let me do one more. Let me redeem myself, and by
- 1:20:06that I mean further embarrass myself.
- 1:20:08OK, I'm so excited for this one. Is it alive?
- 1:20:11No, OK. Do I own it?
- 1:20:15No, you're just going to steal my questions.
- 1:20:18Yeah, because they're good question.
- 1:20:20You got it in. You got it in like 9?
- 1:20:23OK, I don't own it. Can I buy it?
- 1:20:27For sure, yes. Can I hold it in my hand?
- 1:20:32Yeah. Do I use it if I own it?
- 1:20:41Yeah, I do. OK.
- 1:20:44Would you look at it and go? That's cool.
- 1:20:49No. Would I want to own it?
- 1:20:54No, I wouldn't want to own it. That's seven, OK.
- 1:21:03Would I keep it on the floor? Yeah, that's such a niche
- 1:21:11question. I'm just.
- 1:21:12Starting to think you've gone with Bosie ball again.
- 1:21:17I wouldn't keep it on the floor. No, you would.
- 1:21:19Oh, I would, Yeah. OK.
- 1:21:21Well, I mean like if you're going to put it somewhere, you'd
- 1:21:24probably just put it on the floor.
- 1:21:27OK, would I use it daily? Yeah, you'll understand when you
- 1:21:36find out why these are. OK, Does it make a noise?
- 1:21:40No. Well.
- 1:21:43Is it? Is it fragile?
- 1:21:44No. I want to rewind to the make a
- 1:21:48noise thing. OK, because like you don't have
- 1:21:52it for it to make a noise, but when it functions like most
- 1:21:56things, it makes a noise. OK.
- 1:22:00You know, like if I used my phone, the tapping.
- 1:22:03OK, is this sport related? Yeah, OK.
- 1:22:10I've lost count again. I think that's 16.
- 1:22:13Really. Yeah.
- 1:22:14Wow, OK. Could be wrong, maybe it was 11
- 1:22:18I've I've lost the the finger thing.
- 1:22:19OK, let's just say it's 16 I. Lost the finger thing.
- 1:22:24The ability to count. I can't multitask.
- 1:22:27So, OK, you just put it on the floor.
- 1:22:30It kind of makes noise when it's doing its thing.
- 1:22:33You you when you use it, it will make a noise.
- 1:22:36I feel like I've made that way more complicated than it needs
- 1:22:38to be. When you use it makes a noise,
- 1:22:39whatever. Everything makes a noise when
- 1:22:41you use it, pretty much. Can I wear it?
- 1:22:43For sure. Oh.
- 1:22:46When it's not on the floor. Is it a pair of shoes?
- 1:22:50No. But you just put it on the
- 1:22:56floor. Yeah, I just say it's so logical
- 1:23:00to me, knowing what it is. Where?
- 1:23:03Else would I put it? That has thrown me off so much.
- 1:23:12Oh, shame. It's not shoe.
- 1:23:14OK, I didn't ask such a wasteful question.
- 1:23:19As I say, it doesn't go on your feet.
- 1:23:21Have legs? Does it have legs?
- 1:23:24Neither of those are questions. No, you can't ask them.
- 1:23:27Don't ask the feet one. I can wear it, it just goes on
- 1:23:30the floor. Don't.
- 1:23:32Don't fixate on the floor. It makes a.
- 1:23:34No, don't. Don't fixate on the floor all
- 1:23:37the noise. Thing.
- 1:23:37OK, well, it's hard not to. They're quite defining
- 1:23:40characters. I can hold they were bad
- 1:23:42questions. I can.
- 1:23:44You have a great question. I can hold it, but I'd leave it
- 1:23:49on the floor instead. What's going on?
- 1:23:51I can wear it. You don't have to use it 100% of
- 1:23:55the time. So when you're not using it, I'm
- 1:23:57going to put it on the floor. Maybe you don't.
- 1:24:02Maybe you don't keep I'm jaws on the floor.
- 1:24:05Things that I don't own that are like within this and not that I
- 1:24:08own a lot of things, but like, oh, oh, OK, I put stuff in it.
- 1:24:15Is it a rock sack? Yeah.
- 1:24:16Is it a built for athletes bag? Damn straight.
- 1:24:19I'm never only one of those. OK, we got there just for those
- 1:24:23that are wondering where that brain wave came from.
- 1:24:25I just looked about a meter to the left of the camera and my
- 1:24:29rock sacks there on the floor, which it's actually not.
- 1:24:32It's on a work. It's on a toolbox.
- 1:24:36That's what it's on. Well, OK.
- 1:24:38Oh, sorry. So I.
- 1:24:39Keep it on a toolbox. I think I got, yeah.
- 1:24:42Is that what threw? That's what threw you.
- 1:24:43Yeah, 100%. Shame.
- 1:24:46OK, I got there within 21 questions, so I've completely
- 1:24:48redeemed myself. Emma, I'm so sorry.
- 1:24:51I know you're a regular listener.
- 1:24:53We'll rearrange the guest podcast.
- 1:24:55I'll do some more research. And yeah, well, I've embarrassed
- 1:25:00myself, which means that the podcast has done its job.
- 1:25:04And I think we've actually spoken about some cool stuff
- 1:25:06there. So you guys, if you want to send
- 1:25:08in some more topics, like I said, it's always appreciated.
- 1:25:10I think we can talk about everything, so we will be.
- 1:25:15For a long amount of. Time and if things have been
- 1:25:17pissing you off and it's and it's not us, then do let us know
- 1:25:20and we'll include it in the episode.
- 1:25:22Even if it is US. Even if it is US and we'll
- 1:25:24include it. I mean, someone sent a great
- 1:25:26message about Charles in the last podcast.
- 1:25:29The way that he was holding the microphone.
- 1:25:30He's been so hot on it. This time was the claw grip.
- 1:25:33Do you want to demonstrate the claw?
- 1:25:34No, no. I.
- 1:25:35Don't want to further embarrass monster.
- 1:25:36I can't do anything. I'm I'm scrutinized.
- 1:25:38You could go back to the, you could just go back to the last
- 1:25:40episode and have a look. But but yeah, like always get in
- 1:25:43touch. It's, it's great to hear from
- 1:25:45you guys. We want to grow this thing and
- 1:25:46we're looking for ways of doing that.
- 1:25:47So if you've got suggestions on that or you'd actually just like
- 1:25:50to be involved and we should do a live 1 where you guys can get
- 1:25:53directly involved interactively, then let us know because that's
- 1:25:56something that we would love to do as well.
- 1:25:59But that has been another episode, which means that the
- 1:26:01next episode's going to be episode 60.
- 1:26:03That's wild, isn't it? That is wild.
- 1:26:04Yeah, look how far we've come. Thank you very much for all of
- 1:26:08your support to date and ongoing support as well.
- 1:26:12Charles, have you got anything to leave the people with?
- 1:26:15I don't think so. Thanks for listening.
- 1:26:17Thank you very much for listening and we will see you
- 1:26:19all in the next episode.
