- 0:00Speaker 1: She's on the Money.
- 0:02Speaker 2: She's on the Money.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:26Speaker 3: for Millennials who Want Financial Freedom. Twenty twenty one wasn't
- 0:31Speaker 3: quite the relief we all expected. It's been another long
- 0:35Speaker 3: and difficult year, and while there are probably some moments
- 0:38Speaker 3: we'd rather forget, in today's episode, we want to take
- 0:41Speaker 3: a look back at what we've all achieved and learned.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Plus we want to talk about goal setting as we
- 0:47Speaker 3: move into twenty twenty two. Hey, yeah, my name is
- 0:52Speaker 3: Georgia King, and joining me for our very first deep
- 0:55Speaker 3: dive of twenty twenty two is Victoria fine Fee.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Hello Georgia King.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Well, good to see you looking very fresh in early go.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Thank you. It's the active weear, isn't it. It's definitely
- 1:11Speaker 1: the active where That is the one thing I am
- 1:13Speaker 1: taking into twenty twenty two, and that is my love
- 1:15Speaker 1: for wearing activewear to every Okay.
- 1:17Speaker 4: The active words coming, I love it.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Tell me about your twenty twenty one It did have
- 1:24Speaker 3: like garbage fire energy carried over from twenty twenty.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Please be honest.
- 1:27Speaker 1: We thought we were done in twenty twenty with the
- 1:30Speaker 1: hear of the garbage fire. Yet here we are talking
- 1:33Speaker 1: about twenty twenty one in the same vein, but in
- 1:36Speaker 1: saying that we always like to see the positive in everything,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and twenty twenty one was a gorgeous year. I mean,
- 1:42Speaker 1: I wrote a book, Let's just be a little bit
- 1:45Speaker 1: self promotional for what second? That was pretty cool, and
- 1:49Speaker 1: the She's on the money community literally doubled, Like can
- 1:53Speaker 1: you believe that? That's why we started twenty twenty one
- 1:56Speaker 1: with half the amount of community members that we have today,
- 1:59Speaker 1: and that that type of growth, Guys, that's big, like
- 2:02Speaker 1: fifty percent return, Like we like those numbers, We really
- 2:07Speaker 1: like those numbers. But honestly, I could not be more
- 2:09Speaker 1: grateful for the community. And then obviously, to talk about
- 2:13Speaker 1: my personal life for a hot second, gee I got engaged,
- 2:16Speaker 1: she got.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Planning her wedding.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I'm planning a wedding. So I have
- 2:21Speaker 1: lots of things that I need to set goals for
- 2:23Speaker 1: and budgets for in twenty twenty two, because, to be honest,
- 2:26Speaker 1: setting budgets it's feeling a little bit overwhelming. Because George
- 2:30Speaker 1: in very very exciting news. We've booked in a wedding.
- 2:35Speaker 4: It's going to happen this Yeah, it's going to happen
- 2:37Speaker 4: in twenty twenty two.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And I'm literally so excited. And I've never felt more
- 2:42Speaker 1: sick because I'm starting to get quotes back for how
- 2:46Speaker 1: much wedding stuff costs. And I'm telling you right now,
- 2:49Speaker 1: this ame it. This ain't it?
- 2:51Speaker 3: Girl, girl girl, But it's so exciting. You've had a mass.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Honestly, it's so excited. I feel like I have had
- 2:56Speaker 1: a massive year, and getting engaged was honestly the I
- 3:00Speaker 1: on the cake that I feel like we really needed.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Like we had had a flat year, Like you know,
- 3:05Speaker 1: there was so many things that we didn't get to celebrate,
- 3:08Speaker 1: Like we didn't get to celebrate the book launch, and
- 3:11Speaker 1: you know, obviously online we definitely shouted about it and
- 3:14Speaker 1: got to celebrate it, but it's just not the same
- 3:16Speaker 1: as being able to talk to people in person. So
- 3:19Speaker 1: I just feel like twenty twenty two for us and
- 3:21Speaker 1: for Shees On the Money is going to be a
- 3:23Speaker 1: very in person year. Like I want to do so
- 3:26Speaker 1: many events. I want to do live podcasts. I just
- 3:29Speaker 1: want to get out there. I want to meet our community.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I want to hug them. I don't care. I'm not COVID.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I want to share stories and just you know, know
- 3:37Speaker 1: more about you guys. So it'll be a very special year.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I am hoping. Yay.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Oh that's exciting.
- 3:43Speaker 1: But gre last year it was a bit of a
- 3:46Speaker 1: dumpster fire. I get it. We thought that twenty twenty
- 3:49Speaker 1: was a dumpster fire year. It was not. It was
- 3:51Speaker 1: also twenty twenty one. But you were saying before, you
- 3:55Speaker 1: were like, oh it was pretty flat year. Girl. No,
- 3:59Speaker 1: you graduate, you have another degree under your belt. Who
- 4:02Speaker 1: is she?
- 4:03Speaker 4: Two degrees?
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:05Speaker 3: I guess that's exciting, isn't it the old master being done?
- 4:08Speaker 1: And that's exciting. That's literally an achievement that is worthy
- 4:14Speaker 1: of celebration, Like that is so cool, Like you're a master?
- 4:18Speaker 4: Who is she?
- 4:19Speaker 3: A master of a dying industry that I'll never be
- 4:21Speaker 3: employed in? But that's okay, we push on and we sorry.
- 4:25Speaker 1: What was that industry?
- 4:27Speaker 4: Journalism?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Technically is this journalism? Let's call it.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Small like creative writing present, but you know it's in
- 4:34Speaker 3: the media, so it counts. All right, let's go with that.
- 4:37Speaker 3: We'll stay positive, all right, Right.
- 4:39Speaker 4: That counts.
- 4:39Speaker 3: That counts. She counts, No, it has. It has been
- 4:44Speaker 3: a really another quite difficult year, I guess but we made.
- 4:49Speaker 4: It to the end. We're at a fresh year.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I'm feeling quite rejuvenated, which I love after a big
- 4:54Speaker 3: festive period. But the I wanted to ask you about
- 4:58Speaker 3: the importance of looking back on the year that was,
- 5:02Speaker 3: if it even is important, because you know, it can
- 5:05Speaker 3: be quite intimidating to look back at the last year,
- 5:08Speaker 3: in the last two years and think, gee, what have
- 5:10Speaker 3: I actually learned? But would you say it still is
- 5:13Speaker 3: quite important to do that to help inform what we'll
- 5:15Speaker 3: be doing moving forward.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Of course, if we don't know where we've been and
- 5:18Speaker 1: we don't honor the journey that we've been on, how
- 5:21Speaker 1: are we going to see the value in the journeys
- 5:24Speaker 1: that we're going on in the future. That sounds really fluffy,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and I don't mean it to be, but to be
- 5:28Speaker 1: really genuine, like you can't have the sunshine without a
- 5:31Speaker 1: little rain, Like you actually have to have gone through
- 5:35Speaker 1: some levels of negativity or some level of hardship to
- 5:38Speaker 1: really appreciate what we have in the hearing now. And
- 5:41Speaker 1: I know that that sounds super cliche, but in a way,
- 5:45Speaker 1: I'm grateful that as a community we've gone through such
- 5:48Speaker 1: hardship and I know that coming out the other side
- 5:51Speaker 1: is going to look very different to very different people.
- 5:54Speaker 1: But to have gone through everything that we've gone through
- 5:57Speaker 1: to now coming out in twenty twenty two and hopefully
- 6:01Speaker 1: we're not going to go into any other lockdowns, and
- 6:03Speaker 1: you know, we're being promised that, but who knows. Anything
- 6:06Speaker 1: could happen. But it's just it's very cool to think
- 6:09Speaker 1: that we've gone through so many things, we've survived, and
- 6:13Speaker 1: we get to go above and beyond for the next
- 6:16Speaker 1: year and really honor the journey that we've been on
- 6:18Speaker 1: and go, you know what we missed out, but what
- 6:20Speaker 1: are we going to do this year? And some of
- 6:22Speaker 1: us are going to be like, oh my gosh, yes,
- 6:23Speaker 1: Victoria twenty twenty one was so challenging, but I've never
- 6:26Speaker 1: saved more in my life. Or some people are going
- 6:29Speaker 1: to turn around and be like, look, VI, it was
- 6:30Speaker 1: so hard. I literally struggled financially. I'm still looking for
- 6:34Speaker 1: a job. But oh my gosh, how lucky am I
- 6:38Speaker 1: to still be around and have a good community and
- 6:40Speaker 1: be surrounded by friends and family. I just feel like
- 6:43Speaker 1: there's lots of different stories that are going to continue
- 6:46Speaker 1: to come out over the next twelve months. And lots
- 6:49Speaker 1: of flourishing stories from twenty twenty two, seeing people go
- 6:53Speaker 1: from strength to strength, and I just think that we
- 6:56Speaker 1: really do need to learn from the year that was
- 6:59Speaker 1: so we can have the best year yet totally. I
- 7:02Speaker 1: think it also really makes you appreciate the smaller things.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And the other thing I wanted to add was just
- 7:07Speaker 1: how special it is that we've.
- 7:09Speaker 4: All kind of gone through this.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Hideous time really all together, Like, as She's on the
- 7:14Speaker 3: Money community, we've all been through such a big, weird time,
- 7:19Speaker 3: and you know, I feel like She's on the Money
- 7:21Speaker 3: has been such a big part of this time in
- 7:23Speaker 3: my life, for sure.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I hope so, Like you're literally the co host of
- 7:27Speaker 1: the shows, so that would make sense. But I agree,
- 7:31Speaker 1: like having experienced it online and through the Facebook group
- 7:35Speaker 1: and through our Instagram dms. Knowing that we have been
- 7:38Speaker 1: part of your journey, even just like a small part,
- 7:40Speaker 1: even if we're just on in the car on the
- 7:42Speaker 1: way to work and we get to hang out with you, like,
- 7:44Speaker 1: that's just to us so special to think that you
- 7:48Speaker 1: guys choose to have us in your ears, and us
- 7:50Speaker 1: in your cars, and us in your bathrooms and us
- 7:52Speaker 1: everywhere that you are listening to us. It's just it's
- 7:55Speaker 1: very cool because obviously there are lots of podcasts out there,
- 7:58Speaker 1: there is lots of content being produce, and we're not
- 8:00Speaker 1: the only content out It's just very cool that you
- 8:03Speaker 1: choose us, and we're very grateful for it. So hopefully
- 8:05Speaker 1: we can give you another solid year of content that
- 8:07Speaker 1: you absolutely adore and devour.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Well said, V, No, you're right, it is such a privilege.
- 8:13Speaker 3: We did talk about this on Friday's episode and we
- 8:17Speaker 3: touched on it a little bit just before. But what's
- 8:20Speaker 3: in store for She's on the Money this year? V.
- 8:22Speaker 3: We're still sticking to three episodes a week. What's in
- 8:25Speaker 3: Star sucked in Georgia.
- 8:27Speaker 1: King and it still will be doing three episodes a week, which,
- 8:31Speaker 1: to be honest, as a team, we absolutely adore. We
- 8:34Speaker 1: have our Monday Money diaries, we have our Deep Dive,
- 8:37Speaker 1: which is this episode with our best friend Georgia King,
- 8:41Speaker 1: and then we get to wrap the week with jessic
- 8:43Speaker 1: Ricci on a Friday, and it is just I really
- 8:46Speaker 1: like that vibe, and I really like that we get
- 8:47Speaker 1: to see you multiple times a week now instead of
- 8:50Speaker 1: just every Wednesday. But so that'll continue. No changes there
- 8:55Speaker 1: we'll have live events, which is going to be really fun.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm trying to coordinate a few at the moment. If
- 8:59Speaker 1: you live to our episode on Friday, you would know
- 9:02Speaker 1: that I am currently in the works of planning an
- 9:05Speaker 1: International Women's Day event.
- 9:07Speaker 4: La la.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Yeah. But it's one of those things where it's like, Okay,
- 9:11Speaker 1: it's International Women's Day, but how do we make that
- 9:13Speaker 1: super diverse and how do we make sure that we
- 9:16Speaker 1: celebrate the She's on the Money community in that because
- 9:18Speaker 1: she's on the money is not about women. And I
- 9:21Speaker 1: know that a lot of people are going to be like, wait, what, Victoria,
- 9:24Speaker 1: It's actually about just financial literacy and the sheet and
- 9:26Speaker 1: she's on the money. That is me. I am the
- 9:29Speaker 1: sheet and she's on the money because I am incredibly
- 9:31Speaker 1: self centered. But we embrace everybody in every person in
- 9:35Speaker 1: our community, and I just want to make sure that
- 9:37Speaker 1: an International Women's Day event that we pull together is
- 9:40Speaker 1: not just celebrating women. Obviously, there is a lot to
- 9:44Speaker 1: do when it comes to the gender pay gap, and
- 9:46Speaker 1: there is a lot to do when it comes to women,
- 9:48Speaker 1: but there are so many more minority groups that need
- 9:52Speaker 1: recognition that I'm hoping over the next twelve months, we
- 9:55Speaker 1: can really celebrate those days as well, so it won't
- 9:59Speaker 1: eat just that. G. Also spoiler which if you listen
- 10:03Speaker 1: to the Friday episode is not a spoiler. There's a
- 10:06Speaker 1: new book coming, which, Oh my gosh, there will be
- 10:09Speaker 1: a new book coming, and I'm genuinely so excited. And
- 10:13Speaker 1: We're obviously going to keep up three episodes and the
- 10:16Speaker 1: other podcast are going to continue on as well, So
- 10:19Speaker 1: the Business Bible and the Property Playbook are going nowhere.
- 10:22Speaker 1: But the other exciting thing G is and you might
- 10:26Speaker 1: not have noticed this because you're only here recording, but
- 10:29Speaker 1: for everybody listening, you would have heard the pre roll
- 10:32Speaker 1: ad and you'll also hear the mid role ad, and
- 10:35Speaker 1: that is something that we are genuinely so grateful to have,
- 10:39Speaker 1: Like imagine people sponsoring our show, Like genuinely, I'm so
- 10:43Speaker 1: grateful for it. But for those og she's on the
- 10:46Speaker 1: money listeners, you would have picked up it was shot back,
- 10:49Speaker 1: do you know, g This is now the third year
- 10:53Speaker 1: that we have had our friends from Shopback celebrate with
- 10:56Speaker 1: us the first episode of.
- 10:58Speaker 4: The year, Get from the teen.
- 11:02Speaker 1: My gosh, Emily, if you're listening, I adore you. Emily
- 11:05Speaker 1: is my contact at Shopback and she is delightful. But
- 11:09Speaker 1: oh my gosh, you guys have not only embraced Shopback
- 11:13Speaker 1: but allowed them to absolutely flourish. And I could not
- 11:17Speaker 1: be more proud of that partnership and the fact that
- 11:19Speaker 1: one we've kept her for three years, Like there are
- 11:22Speaker 1: relationships I haven't even managed to keep alive for three years,
- 11:25Speaker 1: like Hella to partnership, like girl, what but the fact
- 11:28Speaker 1: that they have been in our community for that long?
- 11:31Speaker 1: But also gee, the fact that we've been doing podcasts
- 11:34Speaker 1: for that long?
- 11:35Speaker 4: But what, It's bizarre, girl, this podcast.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Has existed since twenty nineteen.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Like what how old were you in twenty nineteen? Can't
- 11:43Speaker 3: remember twenty fifth? My remember?
- 11:46Speaker 4: Okay?
- 11:46Speaker 1: I think I was twenty six when I started the
- 11:48Speaker 1: Facebook group, twenty seven when I started the podcast, and
- 11:52Speaker 1: then I got old and now I'm in my thirties
- 11:55Speaker 1: and I'm old and wise and that's very helpful.
- 11:58Speaker 3: You need to stop achieving so much, my friend, Yeah,
- 12:01Speaker 3: age beach impressive.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Let's move on.
- 12:06Speaker 3: I'm so excited this so like it's gonna be a
- 12:08Speaker 3: good year.
- 12:08Speaker 4: I've got it. I've got a good feeling.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I've got a good feeling as I want to tempt fate.
- 12:12Speaker 1: But you know, no, don't do that. Remember the time
- 12:15Speaker 1: you called twenty twenty a dumpster fire, and then twenty
- 12:17Speaker 1: twenty one was like, haha, saw that raise you a million?
- 12:22Speaker 4: Exactly? I'm gonna pour guess all over that dumpster.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Let's true, though, Let's let's talk a little bit about
- 12:30Speaker 3: twenty twenty two. Let's leave twenty twenty one behind and
- 12:33Speaker 3: chat a little bit about our goals now.
- 12:36Speaker 4: We will be.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Talking later in the show about the best ways of
- 12:39Speaker 3: setting your own goals and tools to kind of keeping
- 12:42Speaker 3: you accountable. But I want to know what your big
- 12:46Speaker 3: goals are.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Do we have to do mine first? Can't we do
- 12:48Speaker 1: yours first? I mean we can, Oh, I just I
- 12:52Speaker 1: don't like going first when it comes to goal setting.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Yeah, but you're a big dog.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Yeah I know, I know, all right? So this year,
- 12:59Speaker 1: what am I going?
- 13:00Speaker 2: All right?
- 13:00Speaker 1: So first things first, I have made the goal that
- 13:04Speaker 1: I want to embrace happiness more. I'm obviously quite a
- 13:07Speaker 1: happy person to begin with, but I just feel like
- 13:11Speaker 1: I don't appreciate it, Like I want to have a
- 13:14Speaker 1: better level of gratitude than I already do, and I
- 13:16Speaker 1: feel like I'm one of those people like George, you
- 13:19Speaker 1: know me very well personally, I would say by now,
- 13:22Speaker 1: and I'm always like, I'm so grateful for X, Y
- 13:24Speaker 1: and Z. But I just really want to embrace happiness
- 13:27Speaker 1: and gratitude a little bit more than I already am,
- 13:30Speaker 1: because I just know how that impacts me personally when
- 13:33Speaker 1: I am embracing that. Yeah, And I mean that's not
- 13:36Speaker 1: really a measurable thing, it's just something you want to
- 13:38Speaker 1: be more conscious of. The second thing I am doing
- 13:42Speaker 1: when it comes to I guess big goals. We won't
- 13:44Speaker 1: talk about my fluffy stuff, but I am currently doing
- 13:48Speaker 1: two really big things, and I feel kind of guilty
- 13:52Speaker 1: if I'm being honest talking about these, because it's not
- 13:55Speaker 1: often that people get to achieve these things in the
- 13:58Speaker 1: same year. I do want to preface this with I
- 14:01Speaker 1: have been saving for a very long time for this,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and as you guys know, in twenty twenty, Steve and
- 14:06Speaker 1: I purchased our very first home, which was so exciting,
- 14:10Speaker 1: but we haven't been able to afford to renovate it yet.
- 14:13Speaker 1: So hopefully over the next few months we'll be in
- 14:16Speaker 1: a position where we can finally get a new kitchen
- 14:19Speaker 1: because we have George, as you know, an incredibly dysfunctional
- 14:23Speaker 1: current kitchen that honestly should have got the boot a
- 14:27Speaker 1: very long time ago. So hopefully we can go through
- 14:29Speaker 1: that process and in the same year getting married, which
- 14:35Speaker 1: was a very big undertaking. But as I've said, we
- 14:38Speaker 1: have been saving for a while for both of those things,
- 14:41Speaker 1: and finally they're coming up. But the thing that makes
- 14:44Speaker 1: me feel a little bit guilty is seeing how much
- 14:47Speaker 1: money is going to go out of our accounts this year.
- 14:50Speaker 1: It honestly gives me anxiety, Like, I know we've saved
- 14:52Speaker 1: for it, I know that was the plan. I'm like, oh,
- 14:54Speaker 1: I know, what was the plan, But do we really
- 14:56Speaker 1: want to do that? Because now it's there, is there
- 14:58Speaker 1: not something better we could spend it on. It just
- 15:00Speaker 1: gives me a lot of anxiety. But that is okay,
- 15:03Speaker 1: and it's important to talk through. But the kitchen is
- 15:06Speaker 1: a very big goal, and also the wedding is a
- 15:09Speaker 1: massive goal. So it will be Yeah, it'll be interesting.
- 15:13Speaker 1: And as I said at the start of this episode,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I'm very surprised at how much things cost for weddings,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and over the last month or so that Steve and
- 15:20Speaker 1: I have been planning this wedding. It definitely has been
- 15:23Speaker 1: a journey of values and really understanding what his values
- 15:27Speaker 1: are versus mine and what he's prioritizing and what I'm prioritizing.
- 15:31Speaker 1: And you know, I didn't know how much dresses were,
- 15:34Speaker 1: and so going through that process of me going, do
- 15:36Speaker 1: you know what, I think I'm going to purchase a
- 15:38Speaker 1: secondhand dress because I just don't like for me, that's
- 15:41Speaker 1: not my value. I just don't want to spend money
- 15:44Speaker 1: on something in that realm. And I'm not saying that that's,
- 15:48Speaker 1: you know, the right thing to do, but for me,
- 15:50Speaker 1: that's where I'm prioritizing our funds. And I think that
- 15:54Speaker 1: you know, over time, I'm hoping to share more of
- 15:56Speaker 1: that with you guys, But you know, it is actually
- 15:59Speaker 1: quite a stressful process, and so having goals written down,
- 16:03Speaker 1: it'll be really cool to be able to achieve those
- 16:05Speaker 1: two things. But I don't want you to think that
- 16:08Speaker 1: those two things were only thought about in twenty twenty two.
- 16:11Speaker 1: We've been saving for this kitchen since twenty twenty.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Yeah, she's not just filthy rich no.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Like I mean, guys, I would like that, but maybe
- 16:20Speaker 1: one day, maybe one day, George, what are your big goals.
- 16:24Speaker 1: What are you going to achieve in the next twelve months?
- 16:27Speaker 3: Okay, so first I'll start out a little bit cushy,
- 16:30Speaker 3: little bit mushy as you do. So, I feel like
- 16:34Speaker 3: my one of my main personal goals is to continue
- 16:37Speaker 3: to be really kind to myself. I feel like over
- 16:41Speaker 3: the last two years it's been a real battle of
- 16:44Speaker 3: like that little negative voice in my head kind of
- 16:47Speaker 3: putting me down all the time and being like, you're
- 16:49Speaker 3: not where you should be, and then this other voice
- 16:51Speaker 3: is like, cis relax, it's a pandemic. You're doing a
- 16:56Speaker 3: great jobs existing, you know. So I feel like that's
- 17:00Speaker 3: one of the big ones.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I feel like there's so much pressure on
- 17:03Speaker 1: us to not just exist well, but to somehow perform.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Like that's not what life's about. Life should be about
- 17:11Speaker 1: love and sharing it and you know, being surrounded by
- 17:14Speaker 1: beautiful people, not beautiful things. And I guess I'm just
- 17:17Speaker 1: a little bit fluffy when it comes to things like that.
- 17:20Speaker 1: But if I have learned anything over the last twelve months,
- 17:22Speaker 1: it's definitely money provides a level of financial freedom, but
- 17:26Speaker 1: it is not the be all end all, especially when
- 17:28Speaker 1: we were all in isolation and couldn't see our friends
- 17:31Speaker 1: and family, Like, let's get our priorities right. But you
- 17:34Speaker 1: are absolutely correct, George. I feel like, as an outsider
- 17:37Speaker 1: and also a friend, you have put a lot of
- 17:39Speaker 1: pressure on yourself over the last twelve months, and I'm
- 17:41Speaker 1: glad that you are realizing that and planning to change it. Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Yeah, so well I'll keep on working on that. And
- 17:49Speaker 3: then from a financial perspective, I am going to start
- 17:54Speaker 3: having conversations. So what this means does.
- 17:57Speaker 1: That mean a lot of conversation? So those ones not
- 18:02Speaker 1: good in it?
- 18:02Speaker 3: So I want to start investing, So that means going
- 18:08Speaker 3: to a financial advisor and having I know, a girl,
- 18:13Speaker 3: but like, yeah, sitting down with you and start like
- 18:15Speaker 3: creating a plan and figuring out what I'm going to
- 18:17Speaker 3: do and what I'm comfortable with and getting that sorted.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Obviously having access to you is an immense privilege, but
- 18:25Speaker 3: that is that's one of my goals. And then also
- 18:29Speaker 3: speaking to like a broker or again someone like Amy
- 18:31Speaker 3: and chatting about next steps in terms of entering the
- 18:35Speaker 3: property market at some stage this year just kind of
- 18:39Speaker 3: it'll be cool to.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Start understanding what the expectation exactly and understanding what that means,
- 18:45Speaker 1: and I know that one of the things that has
- 18:47Speaker 1: been really powerful for our community, and that we're actually
- 18:51Speaker 1: relaunching this year, which is so exciting. Gee, is the
- 18:54Speaker 1: hour of power that's coming bad Duke. Yes, I'm not
- 18:58Speaker 1: running it though full disclosure is not me, but isn't
- 19:01Speaker 1: just Acci No, it's not just a Grecchi. It is
- 19:04Speaker 1: actually my friend Kate from Inspire, and she has spent
- 19:08Speaker 1: a very long time with me training up in how
- 19:11Speaker 1: I did it and what's going on. So Kate and
- 19:14Speaker 1: Nikki are going to run though, So they're joining that
- 19:17Speaker 1: She's on the Money team in twenty twenty two, which
- 19:19Speaker 1: I'm genuinely so excited about. But the reason I'm excited
- 19:23Speaker 1: about that is because so many times I have spoken
- 19:26Speaker 1: to people in the She's on the Money community and
- 19:28Speaker 1: they're like, Oh, I really want to buy property, but
- 19:30Speaker 1: I'm like five years away, and you're like, Oh, I
- 19:32Speaker 1: really want you to talk to a broker, But a
- 19:34Speaker 1: broker isn't going to want to talk to you because
- 19:37Speaker 1: you're so far away, and they're not going to give
- 19:39Speaker 1: you the time or the energy to go, Oh, I'll
- 19:42Speaker 1: sit with you g for an hour and make a
- 19:44Speaker 1: plan because they're like, I'm not going to make any
- 19:46Speaker 1: money from this. So we've relaunched the Hour of Power
- 19:49Speaker 1: so you can sit down with a mortgage broker and
- 19:52Speaker 1: talk about buying your first property, or get a savings
- 19:54Speaker 1: plan in place so that you can achieve that and
- 19:57Speaker 1: really understand what your options are. Or if you want
- 20:00Speaker 1: a refinance, you can book a refinance Hour of Power,
- 20:03Speaker 1: or if you're in debt, you can book a get
- 20:05Speaker 1: out of Debt Hour of Power and sit down with
- 20:07Speaker 1: someone and go all right, this is what this looks like.
- 20:10Speaker 1: This is how I get out of debt and get
- 20:12Speaker 1: all the tips and tricks that you need personally to
- 20:14Speaker 1: get out of that situation. So I'm just so excited
- 20:18Speaker 1: for that. But do you know what, George, you can
- 20:20Speaker 1: be a guinea pig. You're going to get set up
- 20:22Speaker 1: with Kate. You're going to do an Hour of Power
- 20:25Speaker 1: and then you know what, we're going to talk about
- 20:27Speaker 1: what you got out of that on the pod.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Yes, I'll report back to the team, let you know
- 20:31Speaker 3: how it goes.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you're going to be the guinea pig and everybody's
- 20:36Speaker 1: going to know how it went. So, Kate, I hope
- 20:38Speaker 1: you perform well, it's going to be like the mystery shopper,
- 20:41Speaker 1: but like everyone knows who you are.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, Okay, enough about us, be I feel like
- 20:46Speaker 3: we have gone on about ourselves. Hopefully people are interested.
- 20:49Speaker 3: If you're not, so sorry you're not. I hope you
- 20:51Speaker 3: learned that you can actually skip in thirty second increments
- 20:54Speaker 3: on your Apple apps, so you don't feel like you
- 20:57Speaker 3: actually had to listen to us. That's on nebabe. But
- 21:00Speaker 3: we wanted to share some inspiration from the community, as
- 21:04Speaker 3: you guys had so many incredible goals last year which
- 21:07Speaker 3: you absolutely smashed, and we also thought maybe for anyone
- 21:11Speaker 3: setting some goals as they move into the new year,
- 21:14Speaker 3: that this could be kind of a good a good
- 21:16Speaker 3: way of stealing some goals. This is inspire if you're
- 21:19Speaker 3: a bit stumped for what to set yourself. These are
- 21:22Speaker 3: some really good idea.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Literally the worst having to sit down someone's like, oh
- 21:26Speaker 1: my gosh, write a goal list. And I'm a very
- 21:28Speaker 1: big advocate of not just writing a goals list because
- 21:32Speaker 1: it's the new year, like.
- 21:33Speaker 4: It's a great time.
- 21:34Speaker 1: It feels like a fresh page, like it is a
- 21:36Speaker 1: good time to set goals. But you shouldn't be limited.
- 21:39Speaker 1: You shouldn't have to wait till next year to set
- 21:41Speaker 1: a goal. If you think of one in February, in March,
- 21:43Speaker 1: in November, chuck it on the list, start working towards
- 21:46Speaker 1: it now. But George, run us through. What has the
- 21:50Speaker 1: community achieved?
- 21:51Speaker 4: Okay?
- 21:52Speaker 3: So our first goal achieved is from Katie. So her
- 21:56Speaker 3: money goal has been in existence since twenty fourteen, and
- 21:59Speaker 3: that was to get out of credit card debt. So
- 22:03Speaker 3: she still has a little bit of debt hanging over
- 22:05Speaker 3: her head with family due to changing jobs and houses.
- 22:08Speaker 3: But she wiped out her personal loan in September, which
- 22:12Speaker 3: was the accumulation of her credit card debts.
- 22:15Speaker 4: So maybe that is massive.
- 22:18Speaker 1: That's years and years of hard work finally paying off. Congratulations.
- 22:23Speaker 3: The next one here is from talia Va. So her
- 22:26Speaker 3: money goal was to purchase a motorbike outright from check out.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Had a badass I don't know, have two k in
- 22:33Speaker 3: an emergency fund amazing even more batter save ten k
- 22:38Speaker 3: for a US trip in twenty twenty three and start investing.
- 22:43Speaker 3: And she has big ticks against all of those goals.
- 22:45Speaker 3: She nailed all of them.
- 22:47Speaker 1: What George, She already has ten grand saved through trip.
- 22:51Speaker 1: That's not even this year, it's next year.
- 22:54Speaker 3: I thought you were going to say that's not even
- 22:55Speaker 3: going to happen because of coaching.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Good No, But like she said in twenty twenty three,
- 23:01Speaker 1: not twenty twenty.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Two, plaistick.
- 23:02Speaker 1: We love that from Talia, I will love you and
- 23:05Speaker 1: she started in their sting and then she says, for
- 23:08Speaker 1: my twenty twenty two goal, she's going to increase her
- 23:11Speaker 1: emergency fund to five grand, find a new job, and
- 23:14Speaker 1: have twenty grand saved for that trip.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Who is she?
- 23:17Speaker 1: Love this the big goals and she's Rhia. Check you out.
- 23:23Speaker 3: The next goal here is from Jen V. So her
- 23:25Speaker 3: twenty twenty one money goal was to save enough to
- 23:28Speaker 3: cover her mortgage for her nine month maternity leave.
- 23:32Speaker 1: That's a smart money goal, it is.
- 23:34Speaker 3: It's very smart, and she managed to do it even
- 23:37Speaker 3: though their little girl arrived two months early.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Early to the party.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Yeah gosh, I.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Hope she's all healthy and happy. But oh my gosh,
- 23:48Speaker 1: imagine achieving that goal, because that's a mean feat. Like
- 23:51Speaker 1: that's a lot of money to save, like nine months
- 23:53Speaker 1: worth of repayments, Hugh, and she did it with enough
- 23:57Speaker 1: time to still have a premie baby. Check you out.
- 24:00Speaker 4: I'm so proud of everyone.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Gosh, and I really love babies.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Oh don't we all toll you should have one?
- 24:06Speaker 3: Thank you?
- 24:06Speaker 1: No, no, no, no is my baby. Yes, we will
- 24:11Speaker 1: think about that. In twenty twenty eight.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Mel was our next little goal setter and achiever.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Here hi now.
- 24:19Speaker 3: So her goal was to save up three months worth
- 24:22Speaker 3: of her wages for emergencies, increase her mortgage repayments, so
- 24:26Speaker 3: she's paying triple the minimum repayment if you don't mind,
- 24:30Speaker 3: and to pay off eleven thousand dollars in debt, which
- 24:33Speaker 3: she did.
- 24:33Speaker 4: She didn't all all of that.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Oh my god, that makes me feel like, oh, that's unrealistic, Mel,
- 24:42Speaker 1: But check you out.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Mel has done it. What a little chance, Peeling.
- 24:47Speaker 1: You're a legend.
- 24:49Speaker 4: You're a legend. She absolutely is a legend. V and Amy.
- 24:55Speaker 3: She is our next one on the list, and she
- 24:57Speaker 3: is also a legend. Her goal was to save twenty
- 24:59Speaker 3: thousand dollars this year, which she reached last week.
- 25:04Speaker 4: How good's that?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 25:05Speaker 3: She also she also said she learned a lot of
- 25:08Speaker 3: things along the way thanks to She's on the money
- 25:10Speaker 3: and she's hoping to purchase her first home this year.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Oh my god, I love you, Amy. That is so special.
- 25:17Speaker 1: But oh my gosh, twenty grand in one year?
- 25:19Speaker 2: What we need?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Well, she said, get to twenty thousand dollars. So maybe
- 25:23Speaker 1: it took her longer than a year, but that's true.
- 25:26Speaker 1: She got me to twenty grand. I'm very impressed.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Our last one here, Ve, is from the lovely Gabrielle,
- 25:32Speaker 3: whose theme this year was to level up in all capitals.
- 25:36Speaker 3: So her first goal was to change her career direction
- 25:39Speaker 3: and get a pay rise while she was at it.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Bo yep, she got the new job, yes, queen in
- 25:45Speaker 3: a new industry with a thirty five thousand dollar increasing mace.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Wait she's now earning one queen, Yes, capped commissions.
- 25:55Speaker 1: So roll, Sorry rude to not share with us what
- 25:58Speaker 1: you do as a job. Okay, Gabriel, Gabriel, We're coming
- 26:03Speaker 1: for you.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Another one of her big goals was to move in
- 26:06Speaker 3: with her partner, which she did.
- 26:08Speaker 4: We love.
- 26:09Speaker 1: That's a very special time in your life.
- 26:12Speaker 4: Yeah for sure.
- 26:13Speaker 3: And her theme this year V is double or nothing
- 26:16Speaker 3: again in all capitals.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Oh, she has a I love that she has a theme. Gee,
- 26:21Speaker 1: have you ever thought about having a theme for your goals?
- 26:24Speaker 4: Absolutely not. My theme is just like push on.
- 26:26Speaker 3: No. I didn't think say yes, okay, how about you?
- 26:30Speaker 1: No? But is this lame? I have like a word
- 26:32Speaker 1: of the year tune.
- 26:33Speaker 4: What's your word this year?
- 26:34Speaker 1: Gratitude?
- 26:35Speaker 4: Okay?
- 26:35Speaker 3: Good?
- 26:36Speaker 1: Like remember how I said I want to embrace more happiness.
- 26:38Speaker 1: I've just picked gratitude as the actual word. And I
- 26:41Speaker 1: just feel like that's a thing. Like I have a
- 26:43Speaker 1: group of friends and we all choose a word for
- 26:46Speaker 1: the year, and I just feel like that's really special
- 26:49Speaker 1: and quite cool, and it's like the theme of the year.
- 26:52Speaker 1: I wouldn't say it's the theme of my goals, but
- 26:55Speaker 1: like it's definitely the theme of the year. Like that's
- 26:57Speaker 1: the thing I want to embrace more over three hundred
- 27:00Speaker 1: and sixty five days. And that's pretty cool. But tell
- 27:03Speaker 1: me what's she doing with her double or nothing year?
- 27:06Speaker 4: Okay?
- 27:06Speaker 3: So number one is she's going to renovate her house
- 27:09Speaker 3: part as already scheduled for later on in this month.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Number two is to buy a second house, and number
- 27:16Speaker 3: three is to double her income through commissions.
- 27:19Speaker 1: What unrelatable content?
- 27:22Speaker 4: Most content?
- 27:23Speaker 3: But I'm happy for Gabrielle she's doing it.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I'm really happy with that as well, and I think
- 27:28Speaker 1: it's actually a really good lesson in if you want
- 27:31Speaker 1: to achieve it, you just need to put your head
- 27:33Speaker 1: down and get it done. Like I'm a very big
- 27:38Speaker 1: believer that everybody has the capacity to change their money story.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Everybody has the capacity to achieve a goal. As long
- 27:45Speaker 1: as we surround ourselves with like minded people, She's on
- 27:48Speaker 1: the money, and we actually create plans for these goals,
- 27:53Speaker 1: everything is achievable. Like at the end of the day,
- 27:55Speaker 1: some of these have been epic, But I also want
- 27:59Speaker 1: to recognize before we jump into a quick break and
- 28:01Speaker 1: I know we'll get to it a little bit later,
- 28:03Speaker 1: but if you're listening to these and you're like, oh
- 28:05Speaker 1: my god, I have achieved nothing in comparison, like my friend,
- 28:09Speaker 1: that does not matter. The achievements of others does not
- 28:13Speaker 1: mean that your achievements are any less or any different
- 28:17Speaker 1: or not worthy. At the end of the day, a
- 28:19Speaker 1: rising tide lifts all ships. And the better you do, George,
- 28:23Speaker 1: the better all women do, the better everybody does. And
- 28:26Speaker 1: I just want to really embrace that energy going into
- 28:30Speaker 1: twenty twenty two. It's not about comparison. It's not about
- 28:33Speaker 1: what you do versus what I do, Like, I am
- 28:36Speaker 1: stoked for Gabrielle, Like, oh my god, you have increased
- 28:40Speaker 1: your base salary by thirty five grand. That's quite literally
- 28:44Speaker 1: the salary of somebody else in the she's on the
- 28:46Speaker 1: money community. That's not a bad thing. But I think
- 28:48Speaker 1: we should all be in awe of each other's achievements
- 28:51Speaker 1: and know if she can do it, I can do it.
- 28:54Speaker 4: For sure.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Let's go to a break. But I don't want anybody
- 28:57Speaker 1: to feel like their goals, whether they had smaller goals
- 29:01Speaker 1: or maybe you didn't manage to achieve your goals, That
- 29:04Speaker 1: doesn't make you anything less, That doesn't change anything, That
- 29:08Speaker 1: doesn't mean that you don't have the potential. Just smash
- 29:10Speaker 1: it out of the park this year.
- 29:12Speaker 3: Okay, V Let's now move into our goal setting section
- 29:17Speaker 3: of the show. There are a few rules that we've
- 29:20Speaker 3: kind of established over the journey which we wanted to
- 29:23Speaker 3: remind everyone of today when it comes to setting goals,
- 29:27Speaker 3: like little tips and tricks that make it easier to
- 29:30Speaker 3: stick to them. If that makes sense. Genius Genie reminder,
- 29:34Speaker 3: our first tip is to set achievable goal spee. How
- 29:38Speaker 3: does this work?
- 29:39Speaker 1: Honestly, it is so easy to get completely disheartened and
- 29:43Speaker 1: feel like a dumpster fire if we set a goal
- 29:47Speaker 1: that we aren't able to achieve. So setting small goals
- 29:50Speaker 1: that lead to a larger goal is absolutely preferable. And
- 29:54Speaker 1: the way to do that is to actually work backwards.
- 29:56Speaker 1: So if you want to save one hundred dollars in
- 29:58Speaker 1: ten months, we'd work back and go, Okay, what does
- 30:01Speaker 1: that mean for every single month? Ten dollars a month? Okay,
- 30:05Speaker 1: no problems. Can I feasibly find that in my budget
- 30:08Speaker 1: to save? If the answer is no, we know that
- 30:11Speaker 1: in ten months time we're going to be really disheartened
- 30:14Speaker 1: with our goal because we're not going to achieve it
- 30:17Speaker 1: because at a base level, that was never going to happen.
- 30:21Speaker 1: So I think it's really important to set smaller goals
- 30:23Speaker 1: that lead to a larger goal. Then just set this
- 30:26Speaker 1: massive goal and start working towards it. It's also so
- 30:29Speaker 1: hard in this day and age saving up for a house,
- 30:32Speaker 1: which I know is the goal of a lot of
- 30:34Speaker 1: people in our community, that can take years. And if
- 30:37Speaker 1: you don't set those smaller, realistic goals, you're going to
- 30:41Speaker 1: find yourself falling off the bandwagon or feeling disheartened or
- 30:44Speaker 1: feeling like it's never going to happen. And who wants
- 30:47Speaker 1: to set a goal that's five years away with no
- 30:50Speaker 1: ability to celebrate along the way. So we really need
- 30:53Speaker 1: to break them down into bite sized pieces that make
- 30:56Speaker 1: a lot of sense. And at the end of the day,
- 30:58Speaker 1: setting more realistic and achievable goals is going to land
- 31:02Speaker 1: us in exactly the spot we want to land in.
- 31:05Speaker 3: And I feel like often when you don't meet a goal,
- 31:09Speaker 3: you do feel really useless, as you said, and sometimes
- 31:11Speaker 3: that can kind of propel you to maybe impulse spend
- 31:15Speaker 3: or do a little bit of retail therapy that lets.
- 31:18Speaker 4: You in a worse position.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Anyway, it honestly feels like trash like. And I'm not
- 31:22Speaker 1: saying that because I don't know what it's like. I've
- 31:25Speaker 1: been there, Like I've been in debt before, and I've had,
- 31:29Speaker 1: you know, a personal loan lauding over my head. And
- 31:32Speaker 1: I remember so many times I set the goal and
- 31:34Speaker 1: I would say, I'm going to get.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Out of that.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Okay, Victoria, with what plan were you going to get
- 31:41Speaker 1: out of that? How were you going to do that?
- 31:43Speaker 1: Like maybe one morning on a Saturday, I woke up
- 31:46Speaker 1: super motivated and I would be like, do you know
- 31:48Speaker 1: what I'm done with that? I'm going to smash it down.
- 31:51Speaker 1: But I never gave myself the grace of creating that plan,
- 31:55Speaker 1: so that when I didn't have that same level of motivation,
- 31:57Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I can't be bothered working it out,
- 32:00Speaker 1: or like maybe this month I won't transfer an additional
- 32:03Speaker 1: loan repayment or whatever it was. So I didn't achieve
- 32:07Speaker 1: that as quickly as I could have had I been like, Okay,
- 32:11Speaker 1: I found my level of motivation. This is how much
- 32:13Speaker 1: I owe, how quickly can I repay it back? What
- 32:16Speaker 1: money do I have that I could contribute to it?
- 32:19Speaker 1: And then automating it is really helpful as well. So
- 32:21Speaker 1: if the plan is to get out of debt, and
- 32:24Speaker 1: you've worked out your budget and cash flow so you
- 32:26Speaker 1: can afford another fifty bucks a month onto a debt repayment,
- 32:30Speaker 1: automate it, put it on direct debit, so it happens.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Because as much as it's upsetting, and I don't mean
- 32:36Speaker 1: like deeply I'm so depressed upsetting, I more mean we
- 32:40Speaker 1: aren't always going to hold the same level of motivation
- 32:43Speaker 1: for things or the same goals. It's going to depend
- 32:45Speaker 1: on our mood and what's going on around us. But
- 32:48Speaker 1: if that is deeply a goal of yours, create a
- 32:51Speaker 1: plan that is full proof, make sure it is automated,
- 32:54Speaker 1: set up those direct debts, get your stuff in order
- 32:57Speaker 1: when you do have that high level of motivation so
- 33:00Speaker 1: it can carry you when you're not feelings on top
- 33:03Speaker 1: of it.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Brilliant, which I feel like this kind of leads to
- 33:06Speaker 3: our next rule, writing the goals down. I feel like
- 33:10Speaker 3: that's a really good way of staying on top of things.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Be exactly. Writing down on goals really clarifies them and
- 33:16Speaker 1: allows us to visualize things. So why not stick them
- 33:19Speaker 1: on the fridge or in your wardrobe if you want
- 33:21Speaker 1: to save another thousand dollars? We literally have our savings
- 33:24Speaker 1: hacks that you can print out their very aesthetic and
- 33:27Speaker 1: stick them on your fridge so that you can cross
- 33:30Speaker 1: them off and stay motivated. Things that our front of
- 33:33Speaker 1: mind are far more likely to be achieved. The other
- 33:37Speaker 1: part is what's actually happening on a neurological level. Now
- 33:40Speaker 1: I'm paraphrasing a super interesting article from Forbes here, but basically,
- 33:44Speaker 1: when we write down our goals, we're encoding them, which
- 33:48Speaker 1: is a biological process where whatever we are perceiving actually
- 33:52Speaker 1: travels to the hippocampus, which is in our brain and
- 33:55Speaker 1: is analyzed, and from there our brain sorts out what
- 33:58Speaker 1: will be stored in our long term memory and what
- 34:00Speaker 1: won't be. When we write things down, it is more
- 34:03Speaker 1: likely that that thing is going to end up in
- 34:05Speaker 1: our long term memory, and things that are really our
- 34:07Speaker 1: long term memories, they stick and they happen. Are you're
- 34:10Speaker 1: a scientist, No, I'm not, but I did study psychology
- 34:14Speaker 1: and that's why I know where the hippocampus is located
- 34:17Speaker 1: to Georgia.
- 34:19Speaker 3: That's really cool to know because everyone always says that
- 34:21Speaker 3: like writing it down sticks fluffy.
- 34:25Speaker 1: No, it's literally science, and science is sick. It's also
- 34:29Speaker 1: great to have something to refer back to if we
- 34:32Speaker 1: lose track or need to recall what our goals are.
- 34:35Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, it helps us
- 34:37Speaker 1: keep accountable. If we're writing it down, it is just
- 34:39Speaker 1: more likely to happen. Believe me, it's science.
- 34:43Speaker 4: I love it. Doctor v Our next step.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Can you imagine maybe I should go back to UNI
- 34:48Speaker 1: again and like not become a real doctor because I
- 34:51Speaker 1: don't really like the side of blood. But like, maybe
- 34:54Speaker 1: get a PhD or something, so everybody has to in
- 34:57Speaker 1: the future refer to me as doctor Devine.
- 34:59Speaker 4: I have the money, doctor money, duck cash dock. That's
- 35:02Speaker 4: like a doctor divine.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Does not sound to define work in money, Yeah, it doesn't.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Kind of go work in money. It sounds like I
- 35:08Speaker 1: work in another industry. Maybe I should just change industries
- 35:12Speaker 1: a you, I wouldn't say no, got to go where
- 35:15Speaker 1: the money is.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Okay, the next little goal, the next goal. I'm flustered,
- 35:21Speaker 3: look out, red am. The next step is to check
- 35:25Speaker 3: in with our goals and adjust them as needed throughout
- 35:28Speaker 3: the year.
- 35:28Speaker 1: I think that's a really good suggestion that you have made.
- 35:31Speaker 1: G And the reason I think it's a good suggestion
- 35:33Speaker 1: is what we want today might be what we want tomorrow.
- 35:37Speaker 1: I guarantee the goals I set last year might not
- 35:41Speaker 1: all fit into the values that I hold this year.
- 35:44Speaker 1: So it is always a really good idea to check
- 35:46Speaker 1: in and see if one we're on track with achieving
- 35:48Speaker 1: our goals, or if we need to modify either our
- 35:50Speaker 1: behaviors or our goals to see if we're going to
- 35:53Speaker 1: still achieve them. But on the flip side of that,
- 35:55Speaker 1: what if you're crushing it and you need to make
- 35:57Speaker 1: your goals harder, then you definitely should make them harder
- 36:01Speaker 1: and change them so that we can achieve more and
- 36:03Speaker 1: be the best version of us. I definitely recommend checking
- 36:06Speaker 1: in at least once a month, or or once every
- 36:09Speaker 1: second month, depending on the size of your goal. But
- 36:12Speaker 1: from my perspective, it is really important to not just
- 36:14Speaker 1: check in and be like, am I progressing? Yes? Great?
- 36:18Speaker 1: Is this still of value to me? Is really important?
- 36:22Speaker 1: And I've spoken to people historically, and I know that
- 36:25Speaker 1: there are a lot of you in our community who
- 36:27Speaker 1: have messaged me or talked to me or even my
- 36:29Speaker 1: clients who have been like the yes, So I've spent
- 36:32Speaker 1: the last four years saving for a househ and I
- 36:35Speaker 1: don't want to buy a house anymore. That is fine. Great,
- 36:40Speaker 1: We've been working towards a goal. We have an asset
- 36:43Speaker 1: that we have been saving up for. Any goal is
- 36:46Speaker 1: not a waste of time just because you change the
- 36:50Speaker 1: parameters of what that might look like. And don't feel
- 36:53Speaker 1: disheartened if you're like, oh my god, I've been working
- 36:55Speaker 1: towards this massive goal and now it's not going to happen.
- 36:59Speaker 1: That's fine. Learned a lot along the way, we've changed
- 37:02Speaker 1: our values and that's okay. But the same thing goes
- 37:05Speaker 1: for careers. And I know that this is not what
- 37:07Speaker 1: we were talking about, but maybe your goal is this
- 37:10Speaker 1: year to change careers or get a different job. The time,
- 37:14Speaker 1: energy and effort that you have put into your current
- 37:17Speaker 1: career to date or current job to date, or current
- 37:20Speaker 1: UNI degree to date, it's never lost. Even if you're
- 37:23Speaker 1: not going to work in that industry, you have learned
- 37:26Speaker 1: a lot, Like look at what I have done. I
- 37:28Speaker 1: have gone from being in psychology and now I'm in finance,
- 37:31Speaker 1: and there is no way that I would say that
- 37:34Speaker 1: that was a waste of my time. It has absolutely
- 37:36Speaker 1: gotten me to where I am today. So even if
- 37:39Speaker 1: you're going from medicine to being a journalist or going
- 37:43Speaker 1: from being George a journalist to being something completely different,
- 37:47Speaker 1: it doesn't matter. I think we really need to drop
- 37:49Speaker 1: this idea of oh but I've worked there for ten years,
- 37:53Speaker 1: so maybe I should just stay, or oh but I
- 37:56Speaker 1: did that degree and it would be a waste if
- 37:59Speaker 1: I didn't work in that area. Like no, follow your heart,
- 38:02Speaker 1: follow the things that you love, and I promise the
- 38:05Speaker 1: money and the joy will follow.
- 38:07Speaker 4: I'm welling up over here.
- 38:09Speaker 1: No you're not.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Yes I am. That was stunning from you.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Oh thanks Ja.
- 38:15Speaker 3: Our last little rule here is my personal favorite.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Oh what is it?
- 38:20Speaker 3: It's to celebrate our wins along the way.
- 38:23Speaker 1: And share them with the shaes on the money community
- 38:25Speaker 1: because I literally read every single one of them exactly.
- 38:27Speaker 3: So why is this so important? Like why is acknowledging
- 38:31Speaker 3: our success so pivotal?
- 38:33Speaker 1: Okay, so I'm going to be a little bit fluffy again.
- 38:36Speaker 1: And I was watching a video the other day on Instagram,
- 38:39Speaker 1: because that's what my life is really, It's either scrolling
- 38:43Speaker 1: through my Instagram feed or scrolling through my TikTok feed,
- 38:46Speaker 1: let's be real. But this video came up and it
- 38:49Speaker 1: said if somebody else was as critical of me as
- 38:52Speaker 1: I am of me, I wouldn't want to spend an
- 38:54Speaker 1: hour with them. And I think it's really important to
- 38:57Speaker 1: take that energy and go, you know what, that's true.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I want to be celebrated. You deserve to be celebrated.
- 39:04Speaker 1: It doesn't matter what you do or who you are, like,
- 39:07Speaker 1: you deserve love and you deserve respect, and you need
- 39:10Speaker 1: to start by giving that to yourselves. And you need
- 39:13Speaker 1: to be treating yourself with self worth along the way
- 39:16Speaker 1: and actually making sure that all this time, energy and
- 39:20Speaker 1: effort and the hard work you're putting in is not
- 39:22Speaker 1: only rewarding but really respected, and that actually starts with you.
- 39:27Speaker 1: And it's a really good motivator as well. Just stay inspired,
- 39:31Speaker 1: Like celebrate the small things. I don't care what it
- 39:33Speaker 1: is or how you celebrate. Obviously, please please please don't
- 39:36Speaker 1: go overboard and jeopardize all your hard work. Like there's
- 39:39Speaker 1: treat yourself and then there's absolutely ruined yourself. These two
- 39:42Speaker 1: things are very different. But one thing that I've got
- 39:45Speaker 1: a girlfriend, right, and she adores chocolate, Like honestly, she
- 39:49Speaker 1: could eat chocolate till the cows come home. But she
- 39:53Speaker 1: buys these real bougie chocolates from Hakes in the city,
- 39:58Speaker 1: oh oh, and she puts little like post it notes
- 40:01Speaker 1: on them and sticks them in the fridge. And whenever
- 40:04Speaker 1: she achieves something, she goes and gets the chocolate that
- 40:07Speaker 1: has the post it note on it to celebrate. She
- 40:10Speaker 1: doesn't drink. I would probably do it with champagne or something,
- 40:13Speaker 1: but like she does chocolate, but like labeling the chocolate
- 40:17Speaker 1: and it says if I achieve X, like this is
- 40:19Speaker 1: the celebration, and she's just so cute, and I just
- 40:22Speaker 1: feel like, work out a way that you want to
- 40:25Speaker 1: celebrate and think about it. Is it a small thing
- 40:27Speaker 1: like a chocolate or is it a bigger thing like
- 40:29Speaker 1: maybe going out for dinner or popping a bottle of champagne.
- 40:33Speaker 1: It honestly doesn't matter, but it's actually really sweet to
- 40:37Speaker 1: put yourself in a position where that's definitely going to happen.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Because I think that one thing that I'm really good at,
- 40:43Speaker 1: and I know that a lot of people in our
- 40:44Speaker 1: community are going to resonate with this, is that we
- 40:47Speaker 1: don't celebrate our wins enough. But often that is a
- 40:51Speaker 1: product of us not planning to celebrate our wins. So
- 40:54Speaker 1: whether that is buying the chocolate and putting it in
- 40:56Speaker 1: the fridge before that wind happens so that you know
- 40:59Speaker 1: it's there and you get it when you achieve that,
- 41:01Speaker 1: or it's I know I'm going to achieve my savings
- 41:04Speaker 1: goal and I really want to go out for dinner
- 41:06Speaker 1: with my friend George. Book it in in advance and
- 41:09Speaker 1: say George, let's go out for dinner. I'm going to
- 41:12Speaker 1: achieve this goal next month. Can we celebrate it? I
- 41:15Speaker 1: promise your friends and family will be so excited to
- 41:19Speaker 1: celebrate those goals with you. Write them down, but please
- 41:23Speaker 1: make sure if you do anything in twenty twenty two.
- 41:26Speaker 1: One it's make sure you have an emergency fund, get
- 41:29Speaker 1: that thing in place. But two, please celebrate your achievements
- 41:33Speaker 1: like you are so worth it and I honestly want
- 41:36Speaker 1: to see you win it everything.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Yes, Okay, So to summarize, I guess the four keys
- 41:41Speaker 3: to goal setting are writing them down, making them achievable,
- 41:45Speaker 3: checking in regularly, and finally acknowledging your own success. They're
- 41:50Speaker 3: pretty Four is like a good number, that's the feeling.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Four is the new three therategic number we love.
- 41:56Speaker 3: Okay, So before we do head off fee, we were
- 41:59Speaker 3: talking before the show about how we wanted to touch
- 42:02Speaker 3: on comparison and how everyone over the last two years
- 42:05Speaker 3: has had such a different experience. You know, there's states
- 42:08Speaker 3: that have not been affected by the pandemic at all. Really,
- 42:11Speaker 3: there's others that have been. You know, they've spent a
- 42:14Speaker 3: lot of time in lockdown, and maybe we're all at
- 42:16Speaker 3: different places financially, gills. How do we not succumb to
- 42:21Speaker 3: that kind of toxic, sludgy feeling of comparison, if we
- 42:26Speaker 3: are seeing our contemporaries kicking goals.
- 42:28Speaker 4: That we wish we maybe were.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Honestly, please please, please, please have the self worth to
- 42:34Speaker 1: know that you are good enough and your efforts are
- 42:37Speaker 1: never going to betray you. Like everybody has had such
- 42:41Speaker 1: differing experiences over the last two years. Some of you
- 42:44Speaker 1: have lost your jobs, some of you have had to
- 42:47Speaker 1: remortgage your houses. Some of you have lost your houses,
- 42:50Speaker 1: some have lost loved ones, some have taken massive pay cuts,
- 42:53Speaker 1: some of them battling with their mental health. I know
- 42:56Speaker 1: some people who have been battling with not just mental
- 42:59Speaker 1: health but physical health and very serious illnesses during this
- 43:02Speaker 1: period of time, who haven't been able to even have
- 43:06Speaker 1: family in the hospital with them while they go through
- 43:08Speaker 1: these things. Like there have been some people, George, who've
- 43:12Speaker 1: been completely unaffected. Like it's been such a unique and
- 43:16Speaker 1: absolutely bizarre time. And what we really don't need right now,
- 43:20Speaker 1: especially is to be comparing ourselves to the journeys of
- 43:23Speaker 1: other people, especially because we have not experienced their journeys
- 43:28Speaker 1: at all. We don't know how to walk a mile
- 43:30Speaker 1: in somebody else's shoes because they're currently wearing them and
- 43:34Speaker 1: they're not actually up for you to try on. So
- 43:37Speaker 1: I think that we really need to remember who we
- 43:40Speaker 1: are and remember that we are worth so much more
- 43:43Speaker 1: than often what we give ourselves credit for, and just
- 43:46Speaker 1: because somebody else is making an achievement or somebody else
- 43:50Speaker 1: is in a situation where you know, over the next
- 43:52Speaker 1: twelve months, especially because we've been in lockdown, you know
- 43:55Speaker 1: what we're going to see, George. We're going to see
- 43:57Speaker 1: lots of people buying their first times. We're going to
- 43:59Speaker 1: see lots of people buying property. We're going to see
- 44:02Speaker 1: lots of weddings. We're going to see a lot of
- 44:04Speaker 1: money being spent over the next twelve months because so
- 44:07Speaker 1: many people haven't been able to do that during lockdown,
- 44:11Speaker 1: and that is going to put us in a position
- 44:13Speaker 1: where we sometimes feel a little bit inadequate. You'll be like, oh,
- 44:16Speaker 1: my gosh, how did Victoria refford a wedding after the
- 44:19Speaker 1: year That was like, you don't know my personal situation,
- 44:23Speaker 1: and my friend, I do not know yours, But what
- 44:26Speaker 1: I do know is that I want to celebrate you,
- 44:29Speaker 1: and I hope that you would extend that same grace
- 44:32Speaker 1: to everybody else and not see somebody else's achievements as
- 44:37Speaker 1: a competition, like achievements are not a competition. And I
- 44:40Speaker 1: said it earlier in the show, A rising tide liftsulships.
- 44:44Speaker 1: And that's why we always in the Shees on the
- 44:46Speaker 1: Money community want to embrace your money wins and your
- 44:49Speaker 1: money confessions because I am richer knowing that you're going
- 44:54Speaker 1: through that, I'm richer having those experiences shared with me
- 44:57Speaker 1: in terms of tips to avoid that g feeling of
- 45:00Speaker 1: inadequacy or the jealousy that honestly, comparison does breed. Please
- 45:05Speaker 1: please please pause and remind yourself that you are doing
- 45:08Speaker 1: a great job. If it's on social media, George, unfollow
- 45:11Speaker 1: those people that you just don't need to see the
- 45:13Speaker 1: highlights re aulers of Like, at the end of the day,
- 45:16Speaker 1: that's what social media is. People aren't going to be
- 45:19Speaker 1: sharing all of the stuff that's kind of crappy. They're
- 45:22Speaker 1: only going to share the good stuff. And I think
- 45:24Speaker 1: that there's a lot of power in the mute button,
- 45:27Speaker 1: Like you don't necessarily have to unfollow with them if
- 45:29Speaker 1: they're a friend, I just don't want to see your stuff.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Do cheeky mute Yep, they don't know it won't pop
- 45:35Speaker 1: up on your feed and you won't feel that gross
- 45:38Speaker 1: feeling in the bottom of your stomach if that's what
- 45:40Speaker 1: you're going through. I want you to learn to be
- 45:42Speaker 1: happy for others and actually understand that the more love
- 45:46Speaker 1: you give, the more love you end up receiving. I promise,
- 45:50Speaker 1: the more you give, the more you get back. And
- 45:52Speaker 1: one hot tip from me, and this was a tip
- 45:54Speaker 1: that we had earlier, is write it down. Write it down,
- 45:57Speaker 1: start a gratitude journal and start remind yourself of everything
- 46:01Speaker 1: you have now and all the things that you were
- 46:03Speaker 1: amazing at. Because I promise as much as you might
- 46:06Speaker 1: be looking at other people and comparing yourself to them,
- 46:09Speaker 1: guarantee there is somebody looking at you in exactly the
- 46:12Speaker 1: same way.
- 46:13Speaker 3: That's it, and you never you never think of it
- 46:15Speaker 3: that way.
- 46:15Speaker 1: You never know no one ever thinks of it that way.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Like you might be feeling super inadequate and somebody else
- 46:20Speaker 1: is looking over being like, oh my gosh, they have
- 46:22Speaker 1: it so easy, Like I can't believe they're debt free,
- 46:25Speaker 1: or I can't believe they're in a loving relationship, or
- 46:29Speaker 1: you know what, I can't believe they get to live
- 46:30Speaker 1: in Australia like we live in such a privileged location
- 46:35Speaker 1: that sometimes we just don't see the reality of our
- 46:39Speaker 1: own situations. But George, maybe we leave it there.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Maybe we leave it there A cracking epp for the
- 46:44Speaker 3: first the first deep dive of twenty twenty two. My friend,
- 46:47Speaker 3: we've done it.
- 46:49Speaker 1: So grateful to be back, so grateful to have you,
- 46:52Speaker 1: and genuinely cannot wait for another year of She's on
- 46:56Speaker 1: the Money.
- 46:56Speaker 4: Me me either.
- 46:58Speaker 1: All right, Well, that is all we have time for today.
- 47:01Speaker 1: So just before we head off, we'd like to acknowledge
- 47:04Speaker 1: and pay respect to Australia's Aboriginal and torrest Rate islander people's.
- 47:08Speaker 1: They're the traditional custodians of the lands, the waterways and
- 47:12Speaker 1: the skies all across Australia. We thank you for sharing
- 47:15Speaker 1: and for curing for the land on which we are
- 47:18Speaker 1: able to learn. We pay respect to elders past and present,
- 47:22Speaker 1: and we share our friendship and our kindness.
- 47:24Speaker 3: And remember, friends, that the advice shared on She's on
- 47:27Speaker 3: the Money is general in nature and does not consider
- 47:30Speaker 3: your individual's circumstances. She's on the Money exists purely for
- 47:34Speaker 3: educational purposes and should not be relied upon to make
- 47:37Speaker 3: an investment or a financial.
