- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Get It Got It Girl.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: This is where we talk midlife, reinvention, and creating the life that you love.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: We're figuring it out together, girl.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: So let's get into it.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Have you ever been excited about something?
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Maybe you decided to make a change in your life.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Maybe you want to start a business, write a book, go back to school, change careers, get healthier, or simply do something you've always wanted to do.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: You're excited.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: You're thinking about the possibilities.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: You can almost picture what it might look like.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: And then you tell somebody.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Instead of encouragement, you get questions.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Why would you want to do that?
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Do you really think that's going to work?
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: Isn't it a little late to be starting something new?
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Or perhaps they don't even say anything particularly hurtful.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: They just look at you like they don't quite understand.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: And suddenly that excitement you had starts to disappear.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: You start questioning yourself, maybe they're right.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Maybe it is a silly idea.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: Maybe you should forget about it.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Just forget about it.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Girl, if you ever experience that, we're talking about it today.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Because I want you to consider something.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: What if your dream doesn't need everybody else's approval before you give yourself permission to pursue it?
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Once again, what if your dream doesn't need everybody else's approval before you give yourself permission to pursue it?
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about why other people's opinions can affect us so deeply.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: How to handle the self-doubt and how to keep moving towards something you want without needing everyone around you to understand it.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Let's start with something important.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Most of us want to feel supported by the people in our lives.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: We want our friends to be happy for us.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: We want our families to encourage us.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: And when we get excited about something, it's natural to want to share that excitement with the people we care about.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: There's nothing wrong with that.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: The problem begins when we start using other people's reactions to determine whether our dreams are worth pursuing.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Think about it.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: You can have an idea that generally, genuine, genuinely excites you.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: You've thought about it, you've considered the possibilities, and you want to give it a try.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: But then somebody expresses doubt, and suddenly their opinion becomes more important than your own.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: You start looking at your idea through their eyes instead of your own.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: And sometimes without realizing that you abandoned something you wanted because somebody else couldn't see what you saw.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: But here's something to remember.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Someone else's inability to understand your vision doesn't automatically make your vision wrong.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: You know why?
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Because people see things through their own experiences, fears, expectations, andor their beliefs.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Someone who has never started a business might not understand why you want to start one.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Someone who values stability above everything else might not understand why you want to change careers.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Someone who always followed a particular path might struggle to understand why you want a different one.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: And then sometimes people just genuinely want to protect you from disappointment.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Their concerns may come from a good place.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: But their perspective is still just one perspective.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: It isn't the final decision about what you're capable of doing.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: You can listen to people without handing them the authority to decide your future.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: And that brings us to something else we need to talk about.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Now, I'm not going to tell you to ignore everybody.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: That's not very realistic, and it isn't necessarily wise.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Sometimes the people around us notice things we haven't considered.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And yes, sometimes they ask important questions that help us make better decisions.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: If you're planning a major financial commitment, changing careers, or starting a business, you should absolutely think through the practical details.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Can you afford it?
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: What do you need to learn?
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: What are the risks?
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: What's your backup plan?
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: And those are raised reasonable questions.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: The what is your backup plan?
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: That has helped me at least have a backup plan.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: But you know what?
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: There's a difference between somebody helping you think through a decision and somebody making you feel foolish for wanting something different.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Useful advice helps you see your opinions more clearly, but discouragement makes you feel as though you shouldn't even try.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Useful advice might sound like, have you considered how you're going to pay for it?
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Disencouragement might sound like you always come up with these ideas.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Why don't you just be realistic?
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: One invites you to think, but the other one can leave you feeling as though you have to defend your right to want something.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Here's what I want you to remember.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: You don't have to reject every concern somebody raises.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: You can take the useful parts and consider them carefully and still make your own decision.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: You can adjust your plan without abandoning your dream.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: You can acknowledge a risk without deciding that failure is inevitable.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: You can acknowledge a risk without deciding that failure is inevitable.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: And you can appreciate someone's concern without agreeing with your, you know, they don't agree with your collision.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Excuse me, conclusion.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Tongue tied.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Listen with your open mind, but make your decisions with your own values, circumstances, and goals in mind.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: That's how you build confidence in your own judgment.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about what happens after somebody's reaction gets in your head.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Maybe you're ready to take the first step.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Then you hear that little voice.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: What if I fail?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: What if I look ridiculous?
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: What if I'm too old to start something new?
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: And the dreaded, what if people think I'm foolish or crazy?
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: What if I put all this effort into something and it doesn't work?
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Those questions can be powerful and difficult.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: The difficult thing about self-doubt is that it often sounds like we're simply being sensible.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: We talk and tell ourselves we're being realistic, we're being careful, we're thinking things through, and sometimes that's exactly what we're doing.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: But sometimes we're using those questions to protect ourselves from the possibility of disappointment.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Personally, I know failure of success.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: That was a big one for me.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: When you're used to being a certain way, you're you're afraid because it's uncomfortable and it's unfamiliar.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Because trying something new means accepting that, you know, we might not know what we're doing at first.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: We might make mistakes.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: We might need to change direction or pivot.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: We might discover that the first plan wasn't the right plan.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: And nobody particularly enjoys feeling inexperienced, especially when you're used to being capable and independent.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: But here's the thing: you don't have to feel completely confident before you take the first step.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Confidence often grows through the experience.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: You try something, you learn a little, you make an adjustment, you try again.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Eventually, something that once felt intimidating becomes familiar.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: And even when something doesn't work out the way you expected, you gain information.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: So you didn't fail, you learned something.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Something that you didn't have before.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: You learn what works for you and what doesn't.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: And what you might do differently next time.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: And this is big.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: This is not a wasted effort.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: That's learning.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: And learning is a part of growing.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: So instead of asking yourself, what if I failed?
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: Try asking a different question.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: What could I learn by giving this a genuine try?
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: And instead of asking, what if people think I'm foolish?
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Ask yourself, will I be happy with my decision if I let other people's opinions make it for me?
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: Now, those questions don't guarantee success.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: But they can help you make decisions based on what matters to you rather than what you're afraid other people might think.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: You don't have to announce every dream.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Here's another thing I want us to consider.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: Sometimes we share our plans prematurely before we've even had an opportunity to develop them.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: We tell people about the idea when it's still fragile.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: We try to explain what we want to do before we've even figured out how we're going to do it.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: And then we find ourselves answering questions, defending decisions, and trying to convince people that something we haven't even started is going to work.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: That can become exhausting.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: So here's a suggestion.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Give yourself permission to work on a dream privately before you invite other people into it.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: You don't have to announce every goal.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: You don't have to explain every decision that you make.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: You don't have to tell everyone, you know, what you're planning before you're ready.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: You can just research quietly.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: You can take a class.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: You can practice a new skill.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: You can save money.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: And you can work on a project a little at a time.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: And if somebody asks, oh, what are you working on?
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: You can simply say, Oh, I'm exploring a few things right now.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: I'll share more when I'm ready.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: You don't even have to say, I'll share more when I'm ready.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: Or just say, oh, I'm exploring some things right now.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, just working on a few things.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: That's a complete answer.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: You don't owe everybody a detailed explanation of your plans.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: And remember, keeping something private doesn't mean you're ashamed of it.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Sometimes that privacy gives you the room to think, to experiment, and learn without feeling as though you have to report your progress to anyone.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: You can share when you're ready.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: You can ask for advice from people whose judgment you trust.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: You can celebrate your milestones with people who genuinely support you.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: But you get to choose who has access to that part of your life.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: You don't need an audience for every stage of your growth.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Sometimes the best thing you can do for a new goal is to give it room to grow.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Okay, girl, let's make this practical.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Because you know what?
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: It's one thing to say we shouldn't let other people's opinions control us.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: It's another thing to know what to do when we start doubting ourselves.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: So here are the four things that you can try.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: First, get clear about why you want what you want.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: Before you worry about what other people think, ask yourself, why is this goal important to me?
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Why does it matter?
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: What am I hoping to create?
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: What would it make possible?
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Why are you interested in pursuing it?
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: You don't need to justify your answer to anybody else, but understanding your own reasons that can help you stay grounded.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: It can help you stay grounded when other people have different opinions.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Now, second, this is very helpful.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: This was one of my personal favorites.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Break the dream into a small manageable action.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: You don't have to figure out the entire path today.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Let's say you want to write a book.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: You could spend 15 minutes outlining a chapter.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: If you want to start a business, you could research what it takes to get it started.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: If you want to change careers, you could investigate one training program or take a class.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's going for a 10-minute walk.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: Choose something small enough that you can actually do it.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Then do that one thing.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: You do not need to prove that your entire dream will succeed before you're allowed to begin.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: And third, be intentional about whose advice you seek.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: Not everybody is the right person to advise you about every decision.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: For example, if you're considering a business, I would seek information from people who understand business.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Somebody who's a couple steps ahead of you.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: If you're changing careers, talk to some people in the field that are familiar with what you want to do.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: If you're working towards a personal goal, consider speaking with someone who can offer thoughtful, honest feedback without making you feel small.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Look for people who can ask difficult difficult questions while still respecting your ability to make your own decisions.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: You don't have to find somebody that agrees with everything you say.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: You need people who can help you, you know, think clearly.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: And forth.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Keep one small promise to yourself.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: This is especially important when self-doubt starts creeping in.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Cause it will, and that's normal.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: It will creep in.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Choose one action you said you would take and follow through when you reasonably can.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Maybe you said you would spend 10 minutes working on your project.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: Maybe you planned to research an opportunity.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Maybe you decided to try something that makes you a little nervous.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: Do it.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Not to prove anybody wrong.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: I laugh because that's me.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Not to show the world that you can.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: Do it because you want to build a relationship with yourself.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: A relationship where your goals and your commitments matter.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: Every time you take a thoughtful step towards something important to you, you give yourself another opportunity to trust yourself.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: You're trusting your judgment.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: And that trust can grow over time.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: I want to spend a moment talking specifically to the women listening who are in midlife.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Maybe you spent years doing what was expected of you.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: Maybe you built a life around responsibilities, your family, your career, or needs of other people.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Maybe you look around now and realize that some of the things you want have changed.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: You want to explore something new.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: You want to use your creative side.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: Or you just want to feel more independent.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: You want to make time for yourself.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: You want to discover or even rediscover some interest that you had that you never had the opportunity to pursue.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Or maybe you simply want your days to feel a little different.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: And then, oh boy, that little, little voice creeps in.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: And it asks whether you're too old, whether it's too late, or whether you should just be satisfied with what you already have.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: Well, let me offer you a different perspective.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: You can at the same time appreciate parts of your life and still want something different.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to be either and/or.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: You can have that at the same time.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: You can be grateful for what you've experienced and still be curious about what's next.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: You can love the people in your life and still need time and space to explore your own interests.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: And we all hear about that.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Fill up your cup first, and then you're more likely to, it's easier actually to fill up somebody else's cup.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: You're there for them.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, you can develop thoughts of resentment because, oh my gosh, I didn't get to do this.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: I wanted to take a bath.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I really needed to relax.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: And maybe you didn't do that, and you just pushed forward and you didn't take the time for yourself.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Take the time.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Those aren't contradictions.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: Really doesn't mean you have to stop being curious about what else might be possible.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: You also don't have to make a dramatic change to prove that your life is changing.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Sometimes a new chapter just begins with a class or a hobby.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: A new routine.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: A creative project.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Or just a decision to spend your time differently.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's about building something slowly.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you explore an idea and discover that it isn't right for you after all.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: And that's okay too.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: The goal isn't to chase every dream that crosses your mind.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: The goal is to give yourself permission to consider what matters to you, make thoughtful decisions, and take action when you decide something is worth pursuing.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: You don't have to live according to somebody else's timeline, and you don't have to convince everybody that your next chapter makes sense.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: You just have to be willing to consider what you want it to look like.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: The reignited challenge.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: All right, reignited girls, let's bring this conversation back to you.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: I have a little challenge for you this week.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: I want you to think about one thing you wanted to do, but have been talking yourself out of it.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to be a huge goal.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Maybe there's a project you've been thinking about, or there's a skill that you'd like to learn.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: Maybe you want to try something new or make a change in your routine.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Or spend more time doing something that makes you happy.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: Whatever it is, just write it down.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Write it down, and then I have two questions for you to ask yourself.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: Do I generally want this or am I trying to meet somebody else's expectations?
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: And number two, what's one small step I can take toward it this week?
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: You don't have to announce it.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: You don't have to tell everybody about it.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: You don't even have to know exactly how it's going to turn out.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: Just identify that first step and decide when you're going to take it.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: This isn't about proving that you're capable of doing everything you imagine.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: It's about giving yourself the space to decide what matters and the opportunity to act on it.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: If you'd like to share, I'd love to hear from you.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: What's one thing you've been thinking about doing that you'd like to give yourself permission to explore?
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: You can share it in the comments or simply keep it in your journal.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: You can send me a message and I will keep it private.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: Either way, let this be the week you stop automatically talking yourself out of something just because it feels unfamiliar.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Okay, before we wrap up, I want you to remember three things.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: You can listen to other people's opinions without letting those opinions make your decisions.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: Two, you can take useful advice without abandoning something that matters to you.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: And three, you can work toward a goal without needing everybody else to understand it first.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Your dreams don't come with a guarantee, nobody's do.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: But you can approach them thoughtfully, learn as you go, and decide for yourself whether they're worth pursuing.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: You don't have to have everything figured out.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: You don't need to be fearless.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: And you don't need everybody cheering you on before you begin.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you just need to give yourself the go-ahead to take the next step.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: And remember, we're not here to prove anybody wrong.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: We're not competing with other people.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: We're here to build the lives that feel right for us.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you for spending time with me on Get It Got It Girl.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: If this episode helped you, just share it with one of your friends that maybe you think this might help them too.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: And if you're ready to keep working on your next chapter, remember reignite a girls challenge.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: Choose one thing you want to explore and take one small step toward it this week.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: You don't have to change everything overnight.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: You just have to be willing to begin.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: Until next time, girl, keep believing that there's room for something new.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Keep making choices that reflect who you are and what matters to you.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: And give yourself the go ahead to go ahead and build the life that you love.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Get it, got it, girls.
