  innocent man that was just trying to live life and provide

  And it is ending with a woman so bent on manipulation that she

  just can't help herself even after she's lost.

  husband. Richins was sentenced May 13 to

  jury convicted her earlier in the death of Eric Richins.

  Prosecutor said she poisoned her husband with a lethal dose dose

  of fentanyl at their home near Park City in 2022.

  the grand scheme of things, I mean it's closer to Park City

  than I am. The Utah mother and self
• 6:47
  published children's book author was also convicted of attempted
• 6:51
  aggravated murder, forgery and insurance fraud tied to the
• 6:57
  case. Prosecutors argued Richins was
• 6:59
  motivated by mounting debt, life insurance payouts and a belief
• 7:03
  she would inherit millions from her husband's estate.

  And yadda yadda yadda, we're going to, well, there's not much

  left. Let let me just do the last

  couple of paragraphs. The case drew national attention
• 7:16
  after Richins published a children's grief book following
• 7:19
  her husband's death, then appeared in television
• 7:22
  interviews discussing loss and healing before her arrest in
• 7:25
  2023. During the trial, jurors heard

  testimony that Eric Richins had previously told family members
• 7:31
  he feared his wife was trying to poison him.
• 7:35
  I was talking to a friend on the phone earlier today who was just
• 7:40
  recently up in Camas eating at the very cafe where Cory Richins
• 7:45
  got the sandwich that she poisoned, attempted to kill Eric
• 7:53
  Richins with. She was and we don't have to say
• 7:55
  allegedly anymore, guys. It is not alleged.

  She is convicted of it. Prosecutors also alleged Richins
• 8:02
  tried to kill her husband. We could earlier with a fentanyl
• 8:05
  a sandwich on Valentine's Day before the fatal poisoning in

  March. Her attorneys have said they

  plan to appeal the conviction. Well, of course they do.

  I mean, this, this was a view from this is the thumbnail for

  Cory Richins, 36, was convicted of aggravated murder, attempted

  aggravated murder, forgery and insurance fraud in the death of
• 18:16
  Eric Richins, who died in the couple's home in March 2022.

  The medical examiner determined that the Eric Richins cause of
• 18:23
  death was a lethal dose of fentanyl, which prosecutors said
• 18:27
  was put into a cocktail he drank before his death.

  At trial, prosecutors argued the defendant killed her husband
• 18:35
  because he was worth more to her dead than alive.
• 18:38
  And this is a very, I mean, the human animal is a complex
• 18:44
  creature. It we just are right.
• 18:48
  But one thing that does not change is that we all react to
• 18:55
  incentives, either positive or negative ones, in a very
• 19:00
  predictable way. Most of us, though, don't go to
• 19:05
  the extreme and say, oh, I've got this incentive where my
• 19:09
  husband or my wife is worth more dead than alive.

  I shall accomplish said unaliving.

  Most of us don't do that right? It it we're at the edges, the
• 19:21
  margins of society and I, I mean, I, it, it's uncommon.

  Maybe that's why this case is so compelling is that it is

  uncommon to have like a Black Widow like this typically, and

  it's just the way it is violence which can be perpetrated by
• 19:49
  anyone is mostly perpetrated by men.

  And while while maybe a poisoning, we might not think of
• 20:00
  it as violence, right, is like full on, you know, slashing or
• 20:05
  shooting or punching or bludgeoning or what, you know,
• 20:08
  very violent things. It's still a violent crime.

  She. She killed this man, right?

  So I guess, I guess it's just very interesting that OK, he was
• 20:19
  worth more dead than alive. And so I'm, I am that desperate
• 20:24
  that I'm I'm going to go ahead and just kill him.

  It's just crazy. OK, Continuing the sentence

  worth more to her dead than alive.

  She wanted his insurance money to solve her debt problems and

  was involved in a relationship with a paramour.

  To that end, the jury found that Cory Richins not only killed the
• 20:44
  victim in March 2022, but also that she tried to kill him the
• 20:49
  month prior. Quote On Valentine's Day 2022,

  Cory Darden Richins tried and failed to murder her husband and
• 20:56
  the father of her three children, prosecutor Brad
• 20:58

  Wednesday's sentencing hearing, continuing the quote over the

  next 17 days. She did not think, what have I

  done? Rather she thought, how can I do

  the presence of their children using poison and for money.

  close quote. Judge Richard Mrazek noted the

  sequence of events as he handed down a sentence of life without
• 21:30
  parole for the charge of murder. Cory Richins spoke publicly for
• 21:35
  the first time since her arrest at the sentencing hearing, using
• 21:38
  the time to send a lengthy message to her sons filled with
• 21:42
  advice she wanted them to have. Oh my goodness, the Hutzpot

  quote. Be honest with yourself and
• 21:50
  those you need to, but never apologize for something you
• 21:52
  didn't do, she said. Oh, my goodness, this reminds me
• 21:55
  of the scene in The Shawshank Redemption where Andy learns

  that everybody in prison is innocent.

  admit to something you didn't do and never beg for mercy for

  something you didn't do. close quote.

  She spoke for more than 30 minutes, urging them multiple

  times to, quote, be like your dad. close quote.

  Oh, the chutzpah, man. I've already said that.

  But man, the defendant maintained her innocence, saying

  she remained in disbelief that she was convicted.

  What quote? To this day, I can't believe

  this is real. Sometimes it's just cruel and

  heartless that eight people from a jury who have never met you or
• 22:38
  me or our family and the right to determine our future and they

  did it that in less than 3 hours.

  They did it in less than 3 hours because it was easy.

  That's why in a sentencing memorandum.

  We're going to get to the memorandum filed before

  Wednesday's hearing. Prosecutors said the defendant

  sent, quote, an admirer, close, quote, a message that shows her

  lack of remorse. Just for a second.

  I bet there are enough sick people in this world that she

  younger brother WR woke and tried to enter his parents

  bedroom to sleep with them. As was his habit, WR also found

  himself locked out and slept in ARS bed instead.

  AR would have testified at trial that the defendant did not sleep

  in his room with him the night she murdered his father.

  My dad can't be my coach anymore, can't be at any of my

  will not feel safe if she is out.

  live a happy and successful life without fear of her hurting me

  or anyone I love. WR was still in preschool when

  his mother murdered his father. He is now.

  He has now lived half his life without his father and three

  years without his mother. His memories of both are

  limited. He remembers being scared the

  night of his father's murder and wetting his pants while held in

  the bedroom before his Aunt Katie arrived.

  the defendant insisted in the face of all reason that it was

  For example, when the estate investigator found bank

  statements with Cory Richins Realty's account header and CN

  ES account details, the defendant accused Katie and

  hired counsel to advocate for the criminal prosecution of

  caused her family members to pursue federal firearms charges

  Eric surviving Valentine's Day, three years of pretrial

  detention, and a resounding guilty verdict has only

  amplified the worst of her character.

  It did not remedy it. She has expressed no remorse and

  has indeed publicized the opposite.

  So the irrational nature and circumstances of the aggravated

  murder, its irreparable impact on the on Eric Richman's family
