- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:41Hi, it's. Adam here.
- 0:43And in today's episode of The Hypnotist, you're going to be
- 0:46listening to a hypnosis session. That was created.
- 0:51For a client that was in the aftermath of quite.
- 0:56A severe assault which they. Found very traumatic and the
- 1:02repercussions of that assault affected where they were living,
- 1:08their ability to earn an income and lots of other things
- 1:11happening in their lives. And not only were they dealing
- 1:15with this kind of feeling of vigilance and on edge, but also
- 1:21the anticipatory fear of, well, what does this mean for their
- 1:24future? How do they sort themselves out
- 1:27in different circumstances? And mainly they were holding on
- 1:32to feelings of sadness, but also anxiety.
- 1:37And that's very natural. I think humans aren't meant for
- 1:42let's say. Life.
- 1:45Changing in an instant and that can happen in very different
- 1:48ways in this. Case it was.
- 1:50An assault. In a different case, it could be
- 1:53losing a job. In another case it could be
- 1:56losing a relationship. But these things where it feels
- 1:59like a rug pull from beneath your feet and everything changes
- 2:03instantly can be very, very unsettling.
- 2:07When I was. Speaking to the client about the
- 2:11way they were describing the assault, I couldn't help but
- 2:15feel that it could have been a lot worse and it's very
- 2:20difficult working with a client where they've been on the
- 2:23receiving end of something unjust, unfair and horrible.
- 2:28To start. Communicating or it could have
- 2:30been much worse because that they can feel to the client.
- 2:33That you're diluting. Or demeaning their experience.
- 2:39But at. The same time there can be ways
- 2:44of communicating that in a way that the client can get to a
- 2:49place. Where they agree.
- 2:51That it could have been worse. When you get to that place,
- 2:55trauma can be reframed as a lucky escape.
- 3:00And in this particular case, one of the things the client did is
- 3:03called a hotline for help. And one of the things that the
- 3:09actual advisor said on the hotline, this is how people end
- 3:14up getting killed. So the client already had a
- 3:17reference point from someone impartial that yes, indeed, it
- 3:21could have been much worse. And that gave me the ability to
- 3:27frame what happened as a lucky escape.
- 3:31Now, you can't change the past, but you can change the meaning
- 3:35that you give to events. So in this you're going to hear
- 3:39two key things. The therapist listening will
- 3:42pick up on a technique which is normally used for phobias.
- 3:47It's an element of stage disassociation and rewind
- 3:51technique or fast phobia cure. But in this case it was helpful
- 3:56because the clients were having intrusive thoughts about things
- 4:00they just experienced. So there's.
- 4:03That that's the. Second part.
- 4:05Of the. Session.
- 4:07The first part uses an induction based in nature, but there's a
- 4:12metaphor there that could enable the client to accept this idea
- 4:18that something can be horrible, unpleasant and at the same time
- 4:24it could have been much worse and therefore maybe it was a
- 4:28lucky escape. So there's a bit going on here
- 4:31if you have been on the receiving end.
- 4:34Of a serious. Assault or something illegal?
- 4:38Obviously. Weren't your options, and it
- 4:40might be that getting the police involved or some form of
- 4:44external, let's say body may be very helpful in your situation
- 4:51depending on what the situation is.
- 4:53This isn't designed to do those things.
- 4:55This is designed to help release an element of the emotion
- 5:00connected to the thing. But please bear in mind it was
- 5:04created for an individual with very specific circumstances.
- 5:07Hopefully this will be beneficial for you.
- 5:10But at the same time, if you feel like a more bespoke session
- 5:14would be helpful, there will be a link in the show notes where
- 5:16you can schedule that free consultation call.
- 5:19For now though, find a quiet, comfortable place where you
- 5:21won't be disturbed. Relax and I won't say enjoy the
- 5:24session, but see if it enables you to reframe something
- 5:28traumatic for you, perhaps in a new way, maybe even a lucky
- 5:33escape. So relax and experience this
- 5:36session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 6:14you breathe in, breathe in a slow, deliberately long breath,
- 6:22allowing it to go in through your nose, into your lungs,
- 6:25giving you a feeling of clarity. And as you exhale, allow
- 6:34yourself to release whatever needs to be released.
- 6:39So you're breathing in a sense of resourcefulness and exhaling
- 6:46whatever needs that thing to be let go.
- 6:54And don't be surprised if you breathe in deeper and longer,
- 7:00and as you exhale, you just allow that outward breath to
- 7:08carry on for a few seconds longer than it normally would.
- 7:14Breathing in for longer, breathing out for longer,
- 7:19breathing in resourcefulness and exhaling Anxiety, worries,
- 7:25tension, perhaps even sadness. Whatever needs to be released,
- 7:31allow it to be released. And it doesn't have to be
- 7:36released all in one go. Consider this a transfusion,
- 7:44breathing in the resources you need, slowly displacing what you
- 7:48need to release. So each breath gives you more of
- 7:54what you need and releases that which you don't.
- 8:02And the deeper you breathe, the more relaxed you become.
- 8:07And the more relaxed you become, the more you notice tension,
- 8:12perhaps around your jaw, forehead, neck or shoulders.
- 8:16To just let go. That's it.
- 8:21And I want you to use the power of your imagination to imagine a
- 8:31lake. And not just any lake, but a
- 8:35lake in nature, beautiful nature that is picturesque.
- 8:46I want you to imagine that to begin with, the lake is choppy,
- 8:51unsettled, almost like there's waves on the lake.
- 8:56And maybe these waves represent an unsettled feeling, chaos.
- 9:06If you think of trauma as the ripples, there was an event that
- 9:12caused those ripples. See it all on the surface of the
- 9:15lake and imagine being by the side of the lake.
- 9:19But notice something interesting.
- 9:22The deeper you breathe in and the longer you breathe out, the
- 9:26more this choppy water seems to calm.
- 9:32I want you to see storm clouds, grey dark clouds in the sky.
- 9:37But as you breathe in deeply and release the breath, the clouds
- 9:44seem to be dissipating. The waves seem to be quietening.
- 9:53I want you to keep doing this. Deep inward breaths.
- 9:56Long outward breaths until there are no waves on the surface.
- 10:01The surface of the lake is still and the sky is blue skies and
- 10:08sunshine. And when you get to that point
- 10:14of blue skies and still waters, let me know about nodding your
- 10:17head. Deeper you breathe, the more
- 10:32relaxed you become, and the more relaxed you become.
- 10:37That's it. The lake becomes still, the sky
- 10:43is blue and you can feel the sunshine on your skin.
- 10:48And somewhere nearby, I want you to see a fisherman with a
- 10:57fishing line, and you can see it going into the lake.
- 11:06And I want you to get a sense that that fisherman has an
- 11:09agenda. It is no friend of the fish.
- 11:14He wants to catch the fish and eat the fish.
- 11:19But it puts something desirable on the end of that hook,
- 11:24something that seems harmless, enjoyable, wonderful.
- 11:33Imagine seeing that bait and the hook under the surface of the
- 11:36water. And just imagine briefly feeling
- 11:41like a fish, seeing that desirable bait and thinking it's
- 11:50totally fine to take this bait, and in doing so feel that you're
- 11:58trapped or caught, maybe even the sensation of the hook
- 12:04piercing your skin, and feel a legitimate, natural sense of
- 12:12panic. The line is now coercing you,
- 12:17drawing you closer to the fisherman, and the fisherman
- 12:21does not have your interests at heart.
- 12:27I want you to feel as you're being reeled in, it feels like
- 12:32there's an escape. I want you to get a sense
- 12:39there's an opportunity and you take it and you wriggle off that
- 12:42hook. Something undesirable happened,
- 12:50but it could have been so much worse.
- 12:54I want you to get a sense that you are now free in the lake and
- 13:00feeling traumatized by what's happened, but at the same time
- 13:06grateful that there's another chance.
- 13:11And then imagine standing on the side of the lake, seeing the
- 13:14fishermen looking frustrated that they nearly got what they
- 13:19wanted, but it didn't go to plan.
- 13:24Allow this metaphor of a fisherman and a fish to mean
- 13:30whatever you want it to mean. See the fisherman leaving empty
- 13:37handed, leaving the lake, not gutting what they want, and now
- 13:44you're just left on the side of the lake on a sunny day, a still
- 13:48lake. But somewhere nearby the side of
- 13:55the lake is a door not connected to a building.
- 14:00A door with a door frame just hovering there by the lake.
- 14:05It seems odd. Why would a door just be next to
- 14:11a lake, not connected to anything?
- 14:13And I want you to imagine standing in front of the door,
- 14:17looking around, seeing that it's just nothing behind the door.
- 14:23But imagine opening the door. And as I count from 5:00 to
- 14:271:00, you will imagine opening the door and walking into the
- 14:30door and realizing that this is a portal to your own private
- 14:37cinema. Breathing in #5 just imagine
- 14:44putting your hand on the handle of the door 4.
- 14:47Turning the hand or three opening the door, 2 walking
- 14:53through the door and one closing the door behind you and you're
- 14:57no longer by a lake. You are now walking into your
- 15:04own private cinema. But this is a state-of-the-art
- 15:11cinema, no one there but you. And this cinema has not one
- 15:18screen but three screens. I was making it like a panoramic
- 15:24IMAX kind of cinema, but it's not 3 separate screens, one on
- 15:30the left, one in the middle and one on the right, all of it
- 15:35equal sizes. Find the most comfortable chair
- 15:41you can find in this cinema with the perfect view of all three
- 15:44screens. And when you find the right
- 15:47chair, let me know about nodding your head and allow yourself to
- 15:51sink into that chair. Feel so deeply relaxed, a
- 15:58wonderful feeling of relaxation. And I want you to notice
- 16:04something. The left hand screen is you,
- 16:07seeing you at your most resourceful, joyful, light,
- 16:16free, optimistic. See that version of you on the
- 16:21left hand screen, knowing you can do whatever you want and
- 16:27know that's true because it happened.
- 16:30You felt that way. And then on the right hand
- 16:34screen, see yourself one year from now, not surviving, but
- 16:43thriving, living the best life you've ever lived, believing in
- 16:51yourself, full of confidence and courage, but also able to
- 16:58establish boundaries to keep you safe.
- 17:03No dependency. See yourself in that future
- 17:11where you have created a life that's good for you and the
- 17:16people you love the most. As you breathe in and breathe
- 17:23out. Notice the middle screen is
- 17:24blank. Deliberately so, because the
- 17:31middle screen represents an unpleasant moment, something
- 17:38perhaps traumatic, stressful, undesirable.
- 17:44But we're not going to look at that screen from the cinema,
- 17:48we're going to go all the way up to the projector booth.
- 17:52So allow your physical body to stay in that chair, but imagine
- 17:57what it would be like to be the person in the projector booth
- 18:07seeing the cinema screens from a different perspective.
- 18:12But from the projector booth, you can also see yourself
- 18:16relaxed and comfortable in that chair.
- 18:19So you know it's not you in the booth, just your perception.
- 18:26And then what I'd like you to do is imagine playing on that
- 18:31middle screen, that moment that was traumatic, but you will see
- 18:37yourself like an actress on that screen.
- 18:43It isn't you. It's a representation of you.
- 18:48And all I want you to do is to think of a moment that was
- 18:52unpleasant, triggering, traumatic in some way, and see
- 19:00someone looks like you being portrayed on screen.
- 19:07And I want you to imagine playing it forward, knowing that
- 19:11like any movie, you can distort time and perception.
- 19:16You're observing it, and you're seeing it like it's happening to
- 19:20someone else. Imagine playing it from the
- 19:25beginning to the end, but allow the end to be when you feel that
- 19:37the trauma has passed. The end is where you are safe,
- 19:42calm and comfortable, and just play it forward, perhaps once or
- 19:48twice, just to know that you know the structure of that
- 19:53memory. And when you've seen it, let me
- 19:57know by nodding your head. But now we're going to do
- 20:03something unusual now that you know the sequence of the movie.
- 20:11I want you to start at the end and imagine you've got one of
- 20:16those old remote controls where you can rewind things, and just
- 20:22imagine seeing the whole movie happening backwards.
- 20:26It starts at the end, and it goes backwards to before the
- 20:33moment even happened, and therefore it ends when you're
- 20:38fine. So just imagine watching it
- 20:44backwards and when you've seen it in reverse, let me know about
- 20:48nodding your head and then jump back to the end.
- 21:00You're still in the projector booth, still just watching.
- 21:04And make it happen backwards, but this time twice as fast.
- 21:12And again skip back to the end. Watch it backwards three times
- 21:17as fast. Maybe it's so fast it's a blur,
- 21:21or maybe the voice is the sounds.
- 21:25It all feels high pitched because when sounds increase
- 21:29speed, the pitch goes up. Squeaky voice is all happening
- 21:34backwards. That's it.
- 21:37And when you know exactly what happens backwards, then I want
- 21:46you to pause it at the end and imagine stepping into the screen
- 21:50now, feeling in your own body, but now from a first person
- 21:55perspective. Imagine it all happening
- 21:59backwards, feeling like you're talking backwards, driving
- 22:02backwards, walking backwards, moving backwards.
- 22:05It all happens in reverse from a first person perspective.
- 22:14When you get to the end, which is the beginning, then jump back
- 22:16to the end and make it even faster.
- 22:19You're in your own body. Emotions will happen in reverse.
- 22:24Any tightness in your chest or your gut, any twisting happens
- 22:29in reverse. It's all happening backwards.
- 22:33That's it. Jump back to the end and I'm
- 22:38going to make the sound. And as I make that sound, just
- 22:43imagine it all happening backwards at the same speed.
- 22:47Whooshed. Jump back to the end and then
- 22:52whooshed all the way to the beginning.
- 22:54And one final time whooshed. But this time, as you go
- 23:02backwards, find yourself not at the beginning of the memory, but
- 23:06find yourself in the body of you at that left hand screen feeling
- 23:09so resourceful. You're at the end of that movie
- 23:15and all the way back was to now find yourself in a place of pure
- 23:20resourcefulness, feeling light, free, joyful feeling in a good
- 23:29place and just scan your body and notice then certain feelings
- 23:35that may have been there recently seem to be melting
- 23:39away. You feel free and more relaxed
- 23:42that the sympathetic nervous system is dialling down and the
- 23:48parasympathetic nervous system is dialling up.
- 23:52Let's try it one more time. In the moment of trauma and
- 23:56whooshed back in that resourceful state back in your
- 24:00body when you felt great. And now jump back to the
- 24:08projector booth. And this time let's decide how
- 24:15you would have wanted that traumatic moment to have been.
- 24:20We can't change the past, but we can change emotional
- 24:25associations. So imagine seeing it from the
- 24:29projector booth, playing forward the way you would have wanted it
- 24:33to have been. Maybe see yourself being more
- 24:37assertive, making different decisions, having clearer
- 24:41boundaries, making different choices or behaviours.
- 24:48But notice how resourceful you look in this middle screen.
- 24:51Now you're reminded of that version of you in the left hand
- 24:56screen, but now in the middle screen.
- 24:59And by harnessing these resources, observe it happening
- 25:04the way you would have wanted. And this is just your
- 25:08imagination. In your imagination, the fish
- 25:13being caught by the fisherman could jump out of the lake and
- 25:18punch the fisherman in the nose before going back in the lake.
- 25:22Just your imagination. That's Zen.
- 25:27So allow yourself to make what happens in that middle screen
- 25:31doesn't have to be logical, feasible, even possible.
- 25:35It's what you want it to be, to feel free of that memory, that
- 25:42moment. Maybe the tables turn.
- 25:50Maybe something happens where you foil their plan before it
- 25:56even happens. What if you need to see?
- 26:01Allow it to see and just keep changing the scenario until you
- 26:04find one that emotionally resonates with you.
- 26:09Feels like yes, if that happened, that would be amazing.
- 26:14And then play it forward. And if when you're playing it
- 26:18forward, you feel admiration, respect, perhaps even a sense of
- 26:31pride of that version of you in that middle screen, let me know
- 26:33by nodding your head. Play it forward just a few times
- 26:39just to get a sense of the structure.
- 26:41And when you feel like you know the structure of that new movie
- 26:46in the middle screen, let me know by nodding your head.
- 26:51And then take it back to the beginning and then drift.
- 26:54From the projector booth. Into the screen and you are now
- 26:58stepping into your body, but now living it the way you would have
- 27:04wanted it to have been. And notice the feelings of
- 27:10resourcefulness within. Calm, confident, strong,
- 27:17decisive, Whatever the resources you needed most, feel them.
- 27:23They're not there logically, they're there emotionally.
- 27:25Harness them and then feel like you're living that moment the
- 27:29way you would have wanted it to have been, feeling resourceful,
- 27:34powerful. And when it gets to the end,
- 27:39jump back to the beginning and just do it a few times until it
- 27:41really feels like you're updating your neurology,
- 27:51creating new associations, a new meaning perhaps, and what you
- 27:58feel is happening the way you would have wanted it to.
- 28:02It feels like an experience rather than a thought.
- 28:04Let me know by nodding your head.
- 28:10And then feel that as a result of this new meaning, this new
- 28:15association, this helps you become that version of you one
- 28:21year from now, thriving. So now move into that third
- 28:29screen, your future and feel how good it feels to be thriving,
- 28:36not just surviving, not settling.
- 28:40Feel like you're living your absolute best life on your
- 28:45terms. Feeling, in a strange way, that
- 28:50you can be grateful for the past because it forged this new
- 28:55version of you. 500 years ago, the strongest and most desirable
- 29:07swords were the ones that were beaten and forged in fire to
- 29:13become strong and powerful. I want you to feel in that
- 29:21future, what if your moments of adversity didn't break you, they
- 29:28made you. I want you to get a sense of
- 29:34feeling that you have unlocked something powerful within you
- 29:43and then drift back to the projector booth and now see that
- 29:48all three screens are seeing you.
- 29:51Confident and resourceful. See a moment of the past where
- 29:54you were at your very best. See the middle screen where
- 30:02you're rewriting history on your terms and see yourself in the
- 30:06future, thriving. Imagine stepping into any one of
- 30:10those moments, the past, the present, and the future, and it
- 30:13all feels great. And then imagine floating down
- 30:17from the projector booth, back in your body in that comfy chair
- 30:22in the cinema, also seeing that all three screens from a
- 30:25slightly different angle. Show yourself resourceful,
- 30:30empowered and living life the way you choose.
- 30:38It's time to leave this cinema. But you leave knowing that what
- 30:44if something horrible that happened was a lucky escape?
- 30:53And what if that lucky escape was meant to happen?
- 30:57To take your life to a new level, a level of thriving that
- 31:03you've never experienced yet. And I want you to feel that your
- 31:10life is moving in an optimistic, positive direction.
- 31:15And as you leave the cinema, you walk out of a door and find
- 31:20yourself by the side of a lake, feeling that you're not quite
- 31:24the same person that arrived at the lake.
- 31:30The clouds are now blue skies, the rough waters are now still,
- 31:36and perhaps you feel lighter, stronger, more optimistic than
- 31:41you did before. Stop to leave that lake and as
- 31:48you do so, take a deep breath in through your nose and out
- 31:54through your nose. Just wiggle your fingers, wiggle
- 31:59your toes. Start to calibrate with the here
- 32:02and now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 32:08Starting to count 123 waking up 456.
- 32:13More alerts 7-8. Open your eyes.
- 32:16Open your eyes 910 Wide awake, Wide awake.
