- 0:00Oh god. Oh my god.
- 0:02Fuuuuck.
- 0:12Oh man, have you ever actually like kinked a hose while somebody who was like hosing something?
- 0:18I did that to my dad one time. He was fucking pissed.
- 0:23I definitely did that to my dad.
- 0:26That's good. Dads deserve it the most.
- 0:27This is a grand start.
- 0:29Yeah.
- 0:31This is how we always start.
- 0:33The auspicious way to begin our episode.
- 0:35I don't care for people who are prepared. I don't have time for it.
- 0:37Give me the chaos. That's what I want.
- 0:39I just noticed your shirt.
- 0:41Yeah, Nick is wearing a Wild at Heart shirt right now.
- 0:43I've been wearing this shirt for months waiting for you to notice.
- 0:45Every day.
- 0:47That explains the smell.
- 0:49No, that's just me.
- 0:51I'm just lost. I just get lost in your eyes, Nick.
- 0:53Sweet of you.
- 0:55It's the one that he was wearing in the interview when he freaks out and does all the punches and kicks.
- 0:59Then he takes his shirt off and gives it to the interviewer.
- 1:01So if you're lucky, I'll take my shirt off and one of you could go home with it today.
- 1:05I've seen you naked. It's fine.
- 1:07It is fine. It's decent.
- 1:09The UK's own Terry Wogan in that interview. We know it well over here.
- 1:15One of our dearly departed greats. God rest his soul.
- 1:19Oh man.
- 1:21Before we start, can we just talk about the weather for a second because I walked through so many spider webs on the way to my car today.
- 1:27It is spider time for sure.
- 1:29In Seattle, we have this thing called spider season.
- 1:31This is up there with the most American things you could say to me.
- 1:35Do you not have spider season?
- 1:37We have spiders, but we don't have a season where they're just out with the family going, nice day for it today, huh?
- 1:45That is really how it is.
- 1:47My downstairs neighbor showed me where the spider stick was. Like she has a broom that she just leaves outside for taking care of the webs.
- 1:53You have a spider stick.
- 1:55It's like a poop knife, but for outside.
- 1:57I went to get the spider stick yesterday to go to my car and the spiders had built a web in front of the stick.
- 2:03They're learning.
- 2:05They're learning. They know what our weapon is. They're trying to stop us from getting it.
- 2:11These are good spiders.
- 2:13You're describing spider season. I just feel like you would pity me and say, Darrell, you wouldn't last five minutes in our world.
- 2:21I probably wouldn't. I'm not built for spider season.
- 2:25For the most part, the weather out here is a lot like southwest Ireland.
- 2:31I only know freedom units.
- 2:35I don't remember Celsius.
- 2:39I only know Celsius, please.
- 2:41Speak down to me.
- 2:43I'm just going to guess it at like 13 degrees. It's usually 13C around here.
- 2:49Welcome back to Cage Match, colon, roundabout way of meeting Nicolas Cage.
- 2:55I'm your host, Sean, here with my co-host Nick and our producer Peter.
- 2:59And we have a special guest today from the Cage Raid podcast. We have Darrell.
- 3:03Hello, gang. Hello, everyone. Thank you for inviting me. What a delight it is to be here with you all today.
- 3:09It's been really educational. We're already busting into like the metric podcasting scene.
- 3:17We're coming for you.
- 3:19It's a niche that needs to be tapped into and I'm sick of no one talking about it.
- 3:23But we're not going to go all the way. We're still going to use standard units like inches.
- 3:27I think you named the podcast freedom units.
- 3:31On this podcast, we talk about rate and review 64 Nicolas Cage best films as decided by us.
- 3:39And we will one day decide what Nick Cage's best most cagey film is again as decided by us.
- 3:46Right. So it's kind of a bracket style 64 movies head to head.
- 3:49And we whittle them down into a final 32, final 16, et cetera, et cetera.
- 3:5464 movies go in. One movie comes out if we can be bothered to finish this.
- 3:58Yeah, we'll see. Season one getting close to wrapping up season two.
- 4:02Who knows? That's a lot of rewatching.
- 4:04So, Darryl, your show in brief, you are really just running through the entire catalog of Nick Cage's filmography, correct?
- 4:12Yes, sir. I hear you say 64 only. And I think rookie rookie numbers.
- 4:18To be fair, this is a bracket that kind of like timeline ended at unbearable weight because that's when we started this.
- 4:26So, Darryl, you made it through the entire catalog at this point, correct?
- 4:29Pretty much got one or two to catch up on.
- 4:32But we were talking the other day, like, and you said, oh, you like you started this a few years ago.
- 4:36And I was like, oh, my God, I've been doing this for years.
- 4:40This cage has been my life for years.
- 4:42But this is this is like the weirdest brag for a 31 year old man to make.
- 4:46But yes, I have seen every Nicolas Cage movie ever made.
- 4:49And no, I'm not the same person that I was three years ago.
- 4:54If it makes you feel better, we're almost 40. So you're ruining your life 10 years later.
- 4:59You got a head start on us. I know I'm getting in early.
- 5:02I'm getting the midlife crisis out of the way right now.
- 5:04Well, you get to take a lot more of this knowledge into the dating scene.
- 5:08I've tried. I've been trying to get my partner into Nicolas Cage for a few years.
- 5:13I'm whittling her down bit by bit. I made sort of made a watch knowing with me, which we'll talk about later.
- 5:20But more more misses than hits with some of the films I've showed so far.
- 5:24But it's a it's a long process. And that is the commitment of my love.
- 5:30I want to add. Was there a specific order you watched them in?
- 5:33Did you go chronological or was it just kind of oh, did you go alphabetical?
- 5:39I'm not a monster. I went chronologically the straightest, safest way to do it.
- 5:44And then you could just see this evolution of cage, this progression of cage from the eighties up until now.
- 5:51And the most interesting part of the journey is watching how his hairline just evolves as well.
- 5:57I usually try and track his stern and bush. Oh, that's not a bad one to look at.
- 6:02It comes and goes. I think there's less stern and busher's time goes on like Valley Girl.
- 6:06I don't know if you've covered that, but he basically had the Batman signal as a stern and bush.
- 6:10I'm sure we'll talk about it more, I'm sure, in a while at heart.
- 6:14But it almost looked like he had his chest hair shaved into like a capital I.
- 6:19And like he just shaved his pecs. But it was just I mean, the people who can see me know what I'm doing.
- 6:25You're indicating a capital I. Yeah. On my chest.
- 6:28We do a lot of physical comedy on this podcast.
- 6:31We like to paint a picture. The best place for physical comedy is through an audio medium, I find.
- 6:36It's gotten me this far.
- 6:39Darrell, we were talking this morning about your episode about Pig and how you had the conversation about the KFC and champagne.
- 6:46And I believe you were calling it a Shamtucky Fried Chicken.
- 6:50And I think it's a fantastic name.
- 6:53That sounds like the sort of mentally ill thing I would have said. Yeah, that sounds about right.
- 6:58It's something you've got to do. You've got to have KFC and fried chicken.
- 7:01You've got to honor the man the way he would want to be honored with his favorite meal.
- 7:06Well, we were thinking, too, as we actually get to our final four, there's a couple of things that we might try and do, you know, renting out a movie theater or something and having people come and watch the movies with us.
- 7:16But the only food and drink that would be served would be KFC and champagne.
- 7:20So I will be on the first flight out. Yes. I will max my credit card with no hesitation.
- 7:28We'll try to do it during Spider season so you get the entire experience.
- 7:33We're just a little over a year out. So yeah, we'll probably do it on Spider season.
- 7:36Yeah, I hate I hate Spider season so much. I've never I've only known about this for 10 minutes and I hate it.
- 7:43Do you guys do you know what like Burning Man is?
- 7:46You guys have the concept of Burning Man or have you heard of burning?
- 7:51Yeah. Do you have your own Burning Man like Burning Chap?
- 7:55Burning Fellow. I am aware of this.
- 7:59It's basically the Wicca Manic set people celebrate in a desert, isn't that kind of the thing?
- 8:03Yeah, and they do a bunch of drugs and shit. There's fewer bees.
- 8:06So I've got a neighbor who is really big into the Burning Man scene and he has built like a it's about five and a half feet tall by around like nine to twelve feet long,
- 8:21just giant hairy spider that he keeps on top of his garage and it like looms out over the sidewalk like it's going to reach down and grab somebody.
- 8:29This thing was not I was not warned about this the first time I went to Nick's place.
- 8:34So I am driving down the street. It's like ooh, cake shop driving, driving, driving.
- 8:38Holy shit, giant spider and like swerve my car in the middle of the road.
- 8:44It's one of my favorite things. And there's no like streetlight next to it.
- 8:48So it's like you just look at it and it's like she lob. That's what they call it.
- 8:53It's Sheila. But in the rain, that thing is truly horrifying.
- 8:57Oh, it's terrifying. It feels like you guys have got like the big holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween and then spider season like the big four.
- 9:07We've got it all. All the hits.
- 9:10Speaking of the hits, 2009's knowing we're going to take a hit and talk about this movie.
- 9:16My favorite part about having guests is having to do less work. So Darryl, why don't you break knowing down for us?
- 9:21So knowing basically charts the journey of an astrophysics professor played by Nicholas Cage, whose son comes into possession of a cryptic document of numbers,
- 9:36which Cage soon finds out predicts various disasters that have occurred that will occur and for some reason decides not to stay in his lane and work out what the numbers mean.
- 9:49Just like that Call of Duty meme. And that's knowing baby.
- 9:54Master class. Thank you. I've summarized a lot of Cage films in my time. Not my first rodeo.
- 10:00So this is very much in that era of disaster porn films. There's the whole string board conspiracy theory, which then takes a hard turn into disaster porn, planes crashing, people like on fire, the whole subway sequence.
- 10:18There was a lot of people just getting fucking killed.
- 10:21Some of these were actually like really weirdly telling like there was a subway car that derailed when the driver was drunk and killed.
- 10:33It only killed like five people. Those numbers were weak, but it did hurt like 160 people and that was pretty impressive.
- 10:40Five deaths. We don't waste our time on five deaths. Yeah, they obviously bumped it up for this movie.
- 10:48Oh, no, I'm sad.
- 10:51They don't make you regular.
- 10:53Don't worry. Step outside and get yourself a face full of spiders and you'll be right.
- 10:58Don't need a background check on the train, baby.
- 11:06We live in a horrible society. Yeah.
- 11:09Everything we say is too soon.
- 11:12Liam Hemsworth was in it. Yeah, he played Spencer.
- 11:16Who? Where was he? I had to go back and look. So the students, right? Yeah.
- 11:19So when he was the one he's like throws the sun to and he's like, tell me about the sun.
- 11:24He's like, it's hot. That's Liam Hemsworth.
- 11:26How did he end up getting a credit on the fucking Wikipedia for that?
- 11:30Because it was because then he went to be on to become Liam Hemsworth.
- 11:34Fair enough. Yeah, because now he has to take over the wildly popular Witcher series.
- 11:38That's true. It all starts with cage.
- 11:41What this movie starts out like back in the 50s or some shit.
- 11:46Yeah, like the inaugural school and our class of this school.
- 11:50And they're going to drop like what are those things called? A time capsule. Yeah.
- 11:56Down. And so everyone draws pictures of the future.
- 11:59Yeah, except for this little girl Lucinda who just writes a bunch of numbers like a mad woman.
- 12:05She had really nice handwriting. I'll give her that. Yeah.
- 12:08So when they put the time capsule on the ground, they like they put that the big metal plate over it.
- 12:13And then when they take it off, they just take it off. So nothing wasn't sealed.
- 12:16No way that thing stayed there for 50 years. I was a shitty kid. I would have tried to get into that.
- 12:20It does feel like a proper prank. Yeah. Manhole covers aren't that heavy either.
- 12:24Well, I mean, they're certainly heavy, but it's not that hard to pull one off.
- 12:28I've gotten in. Were you looking for turtles?
- 12:31No, my college and when I was going to Montana, we figured out that we could pop the manhole in the center of campus
- 12:40and it would drop you down into the steam tunnels or like in the tunnels where all the steam lines run.
- 12:46So you could get into every building on campus because there were no doors because the pipes just had to go in.
- 12:51So we could get into the science building and like into their storage room and play with their microscopes and like, I don't know, go drink.
- 12:58But it's always like 85, 90 degrees in there. So you'd be dropping in in the middle of winter in like shorts and a t-shirt because that's what's going to be comfortable.
- 13:07And then you look like a madman when you crawl out at like three in the morning, just sweating balls.
- 13:14That sounds so freaky, steam tunnels. I think you saying though that sneaking into science labs to play with like microscopes is like the nerdiest thing I've ever heard.
- 13:25Yeah, like real hooligan shit, right?
- 13:28Yeah, I know my voice really makes me sound like I'm some big badass, but no, I'm a microscopes at midnight kind of guy.
- 13:36That's the name of your autobiography.
- 13:39Microscopes at midnight. I'm going to zoom in on this thing. And then crawl back through the steam tunnels.
- 13:45This thing looks dumb. What's it look like really close? Really dumb.
- 13:50The politest acts of rebellion that is possible for anyone to commit.
- 13:56Five seconds of inconvenience.
- 14:00What are we talking about again? No way.
- 14:03All right, so you got Nick Cage as John Costler, Rose Byrne as Diana.
- 14:08I think it's pronounced Kessler. Kessler, thank you.
- 14:11And really Ben Mendelsohn is the only other one that is important. And he fucking rules. I love him.
- 14:18Ben Mendelsohn is awesome.
- 14:20Interesting though, so 2009 he has that one quote, he goes, she thinks you're intriguing, which I thought was code for gay.
- 14:26It's like, oh my God, this is up in era.
- 14:29That era is everything before five years ago.
- 14:31Yeah, pretty much.
- 14:32Turns out not everything is gay. Some things are a little bit gay. So we'll go in the right direction, I think.
- 14:38Or maybe things should be more gay. I don't know.
- 14:41There's a gay spectrum. A gay color wheel?
- 14:44I think all color wheels are gay.
- 14:47This conversation expresses exactly how movies were written in 2009. This is how that line got in there.
- 14:54Oh, absolutely.
- 14:55He's like, I don't know, he's intriguing. Intriguing or maybe just a little bit gay.
- 15:01It was the basis of whole characters once upon a time that they were gay person one, gay person two.
- 15:07And now these characters have names. So I think we're going in somewhat of the right direction.
- 15:12And I'm here for all of it. More names for gay characters, Hollywood, if you're listening. More names.
- 15:17That's kind of actually like original Dungeons and Dragons where it's like, elf is your class.
- 15:24Your entire identity is wrapped up in this one thing.
- 15:27My entire character for his whole season is a gay elf. Any backstory? No. Just fires, bows, and is gay.
- 15:35What else would you need?
- 15:38I just love those pointier dongs.
- 15:40Oh, God.
- 15:42Knowing. 50 years later when it's dug up, Nick Cage's son, who has a hearing aid for reasons, gets Lucinda's letter and wants to figure out what the code is.
- 15:55And like the good father Nick Cage's spends every night in his armchair with a bottle of whiskey and stares at it and sees the numbers 9-11.
- 16:04Which of course stands out to an American.
- 16:06Yeah.
- 16:07That's all I think about.
- 16:09He's on a full conspiracy board and like finds all the dates and tracks it down with like numbers of deaths.
- 16:14And later on finds out that the other numbers that don't mean anything are latitude and longitude.
- 16:19As an airplane falls down on him on the correct date at those coordinates.
- 16:25Like he could have been anywhere in the world.
- 16:27It's good of Lucinda to have set up like the first stepping stone literally blocks away from the school.
- 16:35It speaks to the teaching of 1950s America though.
- 16:38It's a little better at geography and mathematics.
- 16:41I read that her full name is Lucinda Embry, which is like an anagram of badly numeric.
- 16:46That seems like something someone came up with later.
- 16:51I mean about this film though, he kind of feels to me, and I'm not sure if you've covered it yet, but knowing feels to me like the film they wanted left behind to be, even though the ending kind of tanks.
- 17:01But there's a lot of things about this that don't make sense.
- 17:04Like in the film, there was no reason at all logically for Nicolas Cage's characters to start delving into these numbers.
- 17:10He just got like a glass ring on it.
- 17:13It's like, oh, then he sees trigger word for Americans, 9-11.
- 17:18And then what I loved is that he's Googling 9-11 and he sees like 2,996 deaths.
- 17:24And he's like, in the most like passively bland and emotional way, 2,996. Come on! As if, why couldn't you round it up to 3,000?
- 17:35And like he's, something I find baffling as well.
- 17:39I think they're at MIT. Is that the college he teaches at?
- 17:42Which I understand is one of the most like world renowned institutes of learning in the world.
- 17:48But there he is just a depressed astrophysicist professor who's like, everything's shit. Everything sucks.
- 17:55Throwing sons at people like, I'm paying tens of thousands of dollars for this education.
- 18:01This is great.
- 18:04And the other thing, you know, say what you want about child actors when they get the time capsule out and his son gets the numbers.
- 18:11Did anyone else feel like an instant burning rage when that child ran behind him?
- 18:16What did you get? Boring! Everyone else got big juice.
- 18:19I only wanted to beat the shit out of that kid.
- 18:22Yeah, fuck that kid so much.
- 18:24We've been tracking kind of loosely when cage movies have a kid in them, if it's a good kid or a bad kid.
- 18:31Like the kid in Pig. Cool kid. Handpan.
- 18:33Handpan, yeah. That kid fucking rules. This kid and that kid suck shit.
- 18:38The son in this, he's such a little dick. I don't like that kid.
- 18:42It's like a carry over from Left Behind. It's like, well, they had a bad kid. We better have a shitty kid too.
- 18:48Just can't rapture him right away.
- 18:52The first scene of Nicolas Cage and his son, they're like in the backyard.
- 18:58Nicolas Cage is grilling up some hot dog. It's dad's famous hot dog night.
- 19:02Just cooking. They're looking through a telescope. They're talking. They're talking about, you know, life, if there's life on other planets.
- 19:08His wife has died at some point and the kid's just kind of being shit. Life on other planets. His wife's dead.
- 19:14You know, standard Sunday night hot dog conversation.
- 19:18The kid's being kind of shitty about it. And then. Your mom's dead. Have a fucking wiener, kid.
- 19:25I mean, that's not too dissimilar to what happened to me. I was about that age.
- 19:30But this sounds like a therapy moment. Should this be a therapy moment? I've been to therapy. A therapy pod.
- 19:36I feel like the kid's going inside to watch a nature documentary.
- 19:39And the kid's like, what about hot dog night? I'm a vegetarian now.
- 19:43You couldn't have said something before you started cooking. Bad kid.
- 19:47I mean, it sets up a nice comedic line, though. You couldn't tell the guy who buys the groceries.
- 19:53I just did. I mean, he's still a shitty kid. Yeah. And he would get to eat a plain bun with mustard.
- 20:01I just would have whipped it into that kid's room.
- 20:04That's funny. So when I was pulled over and I got a DUI in college, I woke up.
- 20:11That's what you get for driving into the steam tunnels. Yeah. I could stop stealing microscopes, man.
- 20:16I woke up in jail and like the breakfast they served me was two hot dogs split down the middle on white bread, just covered in yellow mustard.
- 20:26But I was a vegetarian and I just like hold it up to the door and I'm like fucking hung over as shit.
- 20:32And I'm like, man, I can't eat this. I guess what you get. I'm like, uh, is that what your love of hot dogs started?
- 20:39No, I loved hot dogs before, too. That's why I've seen you down a dog. Yeah, I can eat it. I can fucking scarf a wiener.
- 20:46It's fine. Can I just add that? Like, we don't call them wieners over here. And it's so funny to me.
- 20:52People don't call them wieners here so much either, because it also means penis. And it's just so funny to me.
- 20:59Wait a minute. You mean there's cultural repercussions to the way I eat tube meat?
- 21:06It turns out we're more different than we thought, kid. I always thought the funniest one was fanny pack, though.
- 21:11Oh, man. Translation issue. So I got so many stories. I'm sorry.
- 21:17I had a professor in college who his wife was from England and he went and was visiting and she like had just gone shopping and bought some new pants.
- 21:25And she comes back and they're like with her family and she's like, what do you think of my new pants?
- 21:29And he just says, your fanny looks real good. And he didn't understand what he had done. Yeah.
- 21:37It's like, hey, nice camel toe, basically.
- 21:41Michael Caine describing what a camel toe is will live rent free in my brain for the rest of my life.
- 21:47All right. So no, this film does that thing that I so the main character, everyone thinks is crazy until they don't until they're on fire.
- 21:58And then they rapidly don't. So Rose Burns character, it's like she finally believes all the things he's saying.
- 22:04She has a daughter. All right. She's the daughter of Lucinda, the girl who inscribed the numbers initially.
- 22:12And she has another daughter who's about the kid, the son's age. And that's how Nick Cage kind of like meets these people.
- 22:18Well, just to set his son up. I love how he figured it out, too, because he's like sitting there in his car with his kid, like at the school or something.
- 22:25And Lucinda's like a daughter or whatever lives across the street.
- 22:30And on the mailbox, it just says Embry, whatever. Like she hyphenated her last name.
- 22:36And that like makes all the connection for him. He's like, wait, wait a minute. School Embry.
- 22:44So she thinks he's crazy until she doesn't until like she starts seeing it's all true.
- 22:49And then when he finally kind of figures out, figures it all out, gets the final numbers because she didn't Lucinda didn't get to write them all down at the end.
- 22:57Never wrote them down elsewhere besides in that door. But he finally gets the final numbers.
- 23:01I figured it out. And she's like, no, we have to go to the caves and save the kids because there's going to be a big Earth ending event.
- 23:08Solar Flare. And you believed him up till now. Why is this where you're going to stop?
- 23:13He had like maybe one scene prior told her that it would be safe in the caves.
- 23:19So she's already in the mindset of, well, this science man told me I could sit down in a cave and I'd be OK with my kids.
- 23:28And she just wants to protect her kids. And then they're also being followed by Nick Cage's friends from City of Angels.
- 23:35Mm hmm. Yes. I kept thinking it was Spike from Buffy. Yes, it did look like Spike from Buffy.
- 23:42Yeah. Which would have been a way cooler movie if Spike was just stalking.
- 23:45So Nicholas Cage, the family's being stalked and it's these blonde guys in trench coats.
- 23:51And when he finally confronts one, this is where the movie just takes its turn.
- 23:54I was enjoying the little conspiracy film up to this point, but he confronts this guy who opens his mouth and a beam of light shoots out of his mouth.
- 24:02I fucking love that because like it was his mouth was just like some vast pit of blackness and then it was like everything was just searing light.
- 24:10And I was like, oh, fuck. Yeah, it gets less cool. Yeah.
- 24:14But Nick Cage's dad is a preacher and they've stopped talking because Nick Cage doesn't believe in God.
- 24:20He's a scientist because Nicholas Cage is the son of a preacher.
- 24:24Anyway, so Lucinda tries to run off with the kids, not Lucinda. Lucinda's daughter runs off with the kids.
- 24:30The men in black steal the kids, kidnap the kids, steal her car. She's chasing after them.
- 24:35Side swipe, dead, just gone. Deserved. Deserved death.
- 24:40I thought she deserved it the first time I watched it. She deserved it the second time that she watched it.
- 24:45I laughed on both occasions when she got plowed through by that truck.
- 24:51That's what happens when you just take off with the kid.
- 24:54This is what this is what's going to happen. You were told to go to the coordinates.
- 24:58You didn't do it. What I thought I was in the funny mindset there because she's panicking in that like gas station just before.
- 25:05And then the alien people come along and they look like every member of like the duo Eurythmics just in like.
- 25:13They look like all of Eurythmics just wiped into one. She turns around the car like you didn't lock the door or anything.
- 25:18You left the keys in the car like they're just like chucking black pebbles at people.
- 25:23There's that really quick like she turns around on like the payphone and there's like a quick zoom into her face, which I just I love a zoom.
- 25:31I love a sudden zoom. There's some of the funniest shots you can do in film for me.
- 25:34So I'm like, well, this is really funny now because I thought like I agree with you guys.
- 25:38I thought like the first two thirds of this film are actually quite good.
- 25:43The conspiracy element is quite intriguing, like the disasters that are happening, the mystery it builds is like this is actually a little bit better than I thought it was going to be.
- 25:52This is kind of fun. It kind of goes a bit crazy when the first plane crash suddenly happens, which is like I guess like a good effect for the time and quite sudden it's out of nowhere.
- 26:02I was only slightly taken out of that bit because there's there's a guy on literally on fire running from the wreckage of a plane.
- 26:10I love a guy on fire and the Nicolas Cage tries to stop this man to asking questions like, hey, the man is on fire.
- 26:19He's got better things to do. I'm trying to pay for parking.
- 26:23You tell me what a meter is. So I found the connective tissue between this movie and next funny female protagonist dies because I will never not laugh at Jessica Biel blowing up Jessica Biel blowing up.
- 26:36That was fantastic. And next, you see, he's got a carry over hair as well.
- 26:41He's come off Bangkok dangerous. It's not the worst hair he's ever had.
- 26:45It's close. It's in like top 20 bad cage hair if I ever do a definitive ranking of cages hair and I want to.
- 26:54But it's like, it's this growing backwards weird pushed back side parting thing, which makes, you know, I've seen some hair in my time, but that one baffles me.
- 27:04It makes no sense. I don't understand how hair grows backwards.
- 27:08Defies follicle science. Shove that up your asteroid physicist pipe and swivel on it.
- 27:16But then I think I think down the line he must have gone. I think he must have got like a hair transplant or something.
- 27:21Absolutely. He's got like the little peak. That's all that the widows peak thing and then at this point in time the 2020s his hair is straight.
- 27:28So don't think this kind of thing goes unnoticed by me, because I've been staring at that face for a long time.
- 27:35Well, and you've watched it sequentially. You've seen everything change and go back and evolve into some new thing.
- 27:42Like the sea waves on a beach. I've seen it go out and I've seen it come back in serene as you like.
- 27:50So the end of this film, I think I texted Nick after finishing them. I feel like you just primal to me.
- 27:58No, no. Primally being Nick's like we're going to watch this movie and halfway through it just cuts to primal.
- 28:03I mean, we're going to do that someday. I know I'm going to trick you into watching.
- 28:06But like I was watching this again, what I thought was an interesting conspiracy film, which was a lot better than I expected.
- 28:11And then suddenly I'm watching Left Behind. Yeah.
- 28:14So when did you guys realize that this was a rapture film? I was curious about when everybody else picked up on it.
- 28:20I mean, as soon as she mentions their there, her sister mentions their father and, you know, he's the son of a preacher.
- 28:28I'm like, all right, this is going to have some, you know, this is going to have some overtones I'm not really here for, but whatever.
- 28:34And as soon as the light came out of the dude's mouth, I'm like, there's fucking angels.
- 28:39Or are they? They had wings. Those stupid ass light wings. Yeah.
- 28:45No, you know, I'm not like a religious myself or anything.
- 28:49So I kind of didn't really pick up on any like iconography or symbolism.
- 28:53I thought with the people like your rhythmic just appearing just the backgrounds like sweet dreams.
- 28:58I thought it was going to be like an Illuminati kind of thing or some secret society kind of deal.
- 29:04But then at the end, they just transform into these celestial beings.
- 29:08And I was like, oh, this fucking sucks. Oh, boo.
- 29:14They've taken the kids off to another planet and they're going to make the kids like suck and fucking recreate.
- 29:19This sucks. I hate this. Why are they taking rabbits? This doesn't make any sense.
- 29:24So yeah, there's the whole arc thing where they take two rabbits, two children, their couple deer.
- 29:31I'm hoping the sake of it's absurd that two people made a planet in the first place.
- 29:37There were other spaceships or there were other. So I'm assuming that I'm hoping there are other kids.
- 29:41My main hope, though, is those kids are left on an alien planet at the end of the film.
- 29:46There's a lot. There are two lions on that planet somewhere. I hope they eat those fucking kids.
- 29:51Well, he's been watching like lion documentaries his whole life, so he's prepared for that.
- 29:55That's true. That's why he was chosen. Only the chosen.
- 29:58You are the only one who can fight the space lions, boy.
- 30:05Based on their documentary habits is why they've made it to the new planet Earth to the spaceships go off.
- 30:12They look like just shattered but blokes about to explode entering out of universe.
- 30:17And then I kind of liked when like Kessler goes back to his family and they sort of reconnect.
- 30:24But like his sister opens the door and she's like, oh, where's your son?
- 30:28And he says, oh, he's fine.
- 30:31Like I kind of that kind of baffled me because it was either that he would be like, oh, he's been taken by space aliens.
- 30:39The space alien thing would have been a fine ending. But no, we have this prolonged like seven minute sequence of him driving into New York during the apocalypse.
- 30:47People are like running around, like just moving out of the way of his car.
- 30:51People have like big Ikea back for some reason. But he gets home, hugs his family.
- 30:56Then we get like two straight minutes of just New York just going up.
- 31:00Fire. Lots of fire. Fuck New York is what this film is saying.
- 31:05The rest of the planet was fine. Just fuck New York.
- 31:08This is real nitpicky. But when they show Time Square there and everything's blowing up and like you see all the TV screens like go to static and then go out, that wouldn't have happened.
- 31:20They would have lost power so much earlier.
- 31:23That is a big nitpicky thing. Oh, it fucking bothered the shit out of me after watching this.
- 31:31Like going back and looking at the poster for it because it's just like the planet and it's on fire.
- 31:36But they don't like really get into like what's going to destroy the planet or even that the planet's going to be destroyed until well after an hour.
- 31:45Yeah, that just bothered me that they put the reveal in the poster might as well have given it angel wings.
- 31:53Yeah, exactly. What do you guys think about performances?
- 31:57I was along for the ride. Nick Cage was perfectly cagey for this role.
- 32:01Well, for 2009, a good Nicolas Cage performance. I mean, two years previously he had done next and it was way worse.
- 32:11Yeah, better hair. Yeah, better hair. Better jacket.
- 32:16I don't know. I wish he had been wearing that golden jacket again.
- 32:19So in terms of our rating, good kid, good movie, bad kid, bad movie, good, bad, bad, good.
- 32:25Yeah. Where would you put this? You know, I'd say good cage. I think it's a perfectly fine performance.
- 32:31And I think everyone gives decent performances. Actually, fuck the kids. They don't.
- 32:36This is the thing I hate in like movies in general when like a weird thing happens, be it supernatural or extraterrestrial, whatever.
- 32:44And then it's always the kids that pick up on the signals and they're just like they just go with it.
- 32:49No, they said they're going to take us because we can hear the the the the static and stuff like fuck you, boy.
- 32:55Like if that was my son, I'd be grabbing him by the arm. I'd be chaining the bastard like you're on earth, frying with the rest of us.
- 33:02You think you can get out of here?
- 33:05Just welcome to America. Start blasting. He had a gun. He did.
- 33:11The coward never even tried to shoot an angel.
- 33:15I like that he had a gun as if he was going to shoot a disaster to save himself.
- 33:19I thought he was he was going to run down to the subway and start shooting that train to stop it.
- 33:25Only solution to our problems in this country.
- 33:28But I would agree. I think the performances were largely all right.
- 33:31Ben Mendelsohn. Great. Who just happens to be there like at the end of the world.
- 33:36He's just hugging his wife in the middle of like Times Square as Nick Cage drives by.
- 33:39I think they were still in Boston at that time, but then they shot for or gave us some establishing shots in New York and stuff later.
- 33:48I was enjoying this movie up until the third act twist, at which point I'm like, fuck all of this.
- 33:55This all my goodwill went out the window. So I'm going to say good cage bad movie.
- 33:59Yeah, I'd say it's a pretty good cage.
- 34:04I'd give it a struggling movie. I'm I'm OK with like 75 percent of it.
- 34:09But as soon as we got through, like, Lucinda's like stabbing cabin, it's and then it really gets to be like blatantly a Jesus movie.
- 34:21It then it suffers for me. Yeah. Or I suffer for it. I don't know.
- 34:27Everyone suffers. Yeah. Except Nick Cage. He got paid.
- 34:30This movie actually made pretty good money. It's of an era. Yeah.
- 34:34I mean, you're right. It is a disaster movie. It does have a big name.
- 34:38It did have a big budget. You know, anybody who saw the marketing for it probably thought that it was not a godly movie.
- 34:46And then I'm sure it came out that it was. And you've got a whole bunch of religious people going to see it, too.
- 34:52I do remember when this movie came out, like the trailers for it, because when the trailers came out, I'm like, this movie came out years ago
- 34:58because I was thinking it was next. Right.
- 35:01Would you watch this movie if Kevin Sorbo was starring in it?
- 35:06No, because I know his audience is probably just clamoring to get him starring.
- 35:11They're hungry for Sorbo. Everyone's hungry for Sorbo.
- 35:14What is happening with that Left Behind sequel starring Sorbo?
- 35:18I'm sure it's getting mailed to everyone in the country.
- 35:22I'm sure something's out with Kevin Sorbo.
- 35:25Did you hear about this? Kevin Sorbo's making the Left Behind sequel.
- 35:29And in an interview, he said how, you know, everyone asked why Nick Cage was in it, not me.
- 35:34Nobody asked that. Not a single person.
- 35:37His mom might have. His accountant probably asked him, like, why aren't you in more movies?
- 35:42You know, I'm pretty sure Kevin Sorbo only has one friend at this point. That's fucking Dean Cain.
- 35:46Apparently the sequel came out like January 2023. We all missed it.
- 35:50Did we miss it, though? We must not have been raptured.
- 35:54I haven't heard from Kevin Sorbo in a while. We are the Left Behind.
- 35:57Yeah, I think I'd rather burn than be in the next world with Kevin Sorbo.
- 36:04Me too.
- 36:05Because I just know that Steven Seagal would make it as well. He would get raptured and he would live.
- 36:10I just know that somehow Seagal would make it.
- 36:12And I can't be in that world where it's me shacking up with Seagal in a fucking Jesus cabin in the woods.
- 36:18How wild would the rapture be if for every two people taken that was devout, one secular, non-Christian gets to go?
- 36:29But you have to be paired up. So you get sent to your own personal heaven and then you have to be tutored by Seagal and Sorbo.
- 36:38Or some Mormon missionaries. You get sent to a planet just Mormon missionaries.
- 36:42I just imagine two days into that you see a cut to Daryl and it's just Tommy Chong in Colorado Space, the desiccated husk of a person.
- 36:52You died in heaven? How is that even possible?
- 36:57There's so much risk. It feels like we're trying to describe who would be in the cast of the anti-expendables, just the evil expendables.
- 37:04If it's not Stallone, it's Seagal. If it's not Jason Statham, it's Kevin fucking Sorbo.
- 37:10The cancelables.
- 37:13The cancelables, yes. What a horrible timeline to live in. And I'm sorry I even brought it up. I'll disconnect from the Discord call now. Someone trombone me out.
- 37:25Nott, you're stuck here for Wild at Heart. Speaking of which, Wild at Heart.
- 37:33Let's do some quotes real quick too before we completely abandon this movie.
- 37:38I'll leave down our quotes. We just didn't announce who the two Americans are.
- 37:41God, this movie was so uninteresting dialogue wise. I just got when Nicolas Cage was going off with his sister and he just says, I'm the son of a preacher as he just kind of charges around by his stairs.
- 37:56I have two. One is when Cage goes to the gas station, and this is while the gas station is being raided. 30 minutes ago there was a woman here. She was screaming. Which one? And the other one is, the caves won't save us. Nothing can.
- 38:17That scene at the gas station, I do love how he's like, there was a boy on a phone. He was nine years old. It's like, yeah, that guy was totally watching who was on the payphone outside.
- 38:29I do like how it's a plot point because of the solar flares. All cell phone activity is gone. Until it's not. Until the son needs to contact Nick Cage, then his cell phone works again.
- 38:40Well, if you go landline to cell phone, that's okay. But sell to sell, not cool. It's like ass to mouth. Just can't in a family film.
- 38:49That's true. You can't do ass to mouth in a family flick.
- 38:52Well, you're saying Clerks 2 wasn't a family film?
- 38:54Depends on your family. And we never got to see it.
- 38:58That's fair.
- 38:59Don't tell me about the ass to mouth. Show me the ass to mouth.
- 39:03Can't do ass to mouth in a family film. I'm sorry. I didn't realize I was talking to three cowards.
- 39:11I have a question for you, Daryl. How do you feel about movies that don't have Nick Cage in them now?
- 39:15It's a really particular thing, but it's like, I don't know how to enjoy movies anymore.
- 39:20I just don't know how to be a normal member of society anymore.
- 39:24When you watch so many films, but you watched it with podcast brain on, you're just trying to think, just accept what's happening on the screen.
- 39:33You remember when you used to have a good time, like pre-2020? Do you remember what fun and hope felt like?
- 39:38I don't know anymore.
- 39:40I've tried to do so many different things. I tried using voice memos while I was watching a movie just to keep track of things.
- 39:49But then I've got like 13,000 voice memos that just come out with, that dog, it totally like, it ate poop.
- 39:59And then I'm like, was that even in the movie?
- 40:02It's like you were talking about Wallace.
- 40:04I did like when you wrote the haikus. That was nice.
- 40:07No, haikus are pretty good. I haven't done anything like that in a little while.
- 40:10Maybe I'll do like an interpretive dance.
- 40:12The sound only.
- 40:14Just the sounds of my, my besokt feet slipping.
- 40:19Wild at heart.
- 40:26That's the next one.
- 40:27That's the next one. Darryl, you're the professional.
- 40:30Yeah, let's hear you sum this one up.
- 40:33Sum this one up big man, I fucking dare you.
- 40:38So we have two inseparable lovers. We've got Sailor and Lula, who after dedicating themselves to each other and decide to have a life together,
- 40:53Sailor is sent to jail after an act of self-defense, but when he comes back, Lula's mother does not want them to be together and sends a variety of strange, weird characters after them to prevent them from being the lovers they were meant to be, because sometimes life is truly, let me look at my notes here, wild at heart.
- 41:15And weird on top.
- 41:17And weird on top.
- 41:18Yeah, so the assault at the beginning as he's defending himself and he kills that guy, I just kept thinking, stop, stop, he's already dead.
- 41:28Yeah, because he, I mean, yeah, the guy had a knife, and he was, you know, well and truly like put out by that first punch, but no, it's the face, face meets banister that really sells that vicious beating.
- 41:40Yeah.
- 41:41So Nick and I got to see this in theaters a couple weeks ago. SIFT here in Seattle did a Lynch series, and this lined up so we both are both our first watchers, this was on a big screen in that like crowded theater.
- 41:55It was a lot of fun.
- 41:56It was a lot of fun. A lot of people who really knew the movie too, but we're not obtrusive or intrusive.
- 42:02Lynch has a pretty huge following though, I mean, for such a bizarro director.
- 42:07He has a really big following here I know, because of Twin Peaks.
- 42:11Twin Peaks, yeah, it does make sense.
- 42:13But yeah, he does have a very, very interested and rabid fan base.
- 42:20So this movie is fucking weird.
- 42:21Yeah.
- 42:23Yeah, it is. I listened to an audio book of like the novellas.
- 42:29I didn't listen all the way through because there's like a whole series but the one that covers Wild at Heart, and it's, it's really interesting because it's a pretty, what I remember straightforward like pulp novel, nothing really lynchy about it, or like, super weird.
- 42:48I found it fun that David Lynch was asked to help write it. And during the writing process he was like, what if I like, like this movie so much I want to direct it and the guy was like, well then I guess we'll just figure that out.
- 43:04And then he liked it so much he ended up just being like I want to direct this and the guy's like, okay, fine.
- 43:09Good call.
- 43:10Yeah.
- 43:11So it wasn't completely smeared with like weird Wizard of Oz references as well. No witches.
- 43:20No. My, my initial take from it was like the only things I found different in like key story stuff is there's no snakeskin jacket. So there's no lines about the snakeskin jacket.
- 43:34That was Nick Cage's jacket.
- 43:35Yeah.
- 43:36And
- 43:37Sailor wears boxers in the book, but obviously Nick Cage wears that banana hammock.
- 43:45I think that's just Nicholas Cage's underwear choice.
- 43:48Yeah, he wears that style a lot.
- 43:50Yeah.
- 43:51He's a big, big leather jacket kind of guy.
- 43:53Leather jacket and banana hammock.
- 43:55So once upon a time there was a, I like to send magazine subscriptions to my friends and there was one that I would get that was called International Mail and it was essentially just a banana hammock, like mail thong.
- 44:12Catalog.
- 44:13Catalog. And I would just get that sent to my friends houses all the time.
- 44:18Sorry, let me just take a note of that International Mail.
- 44:21Okay, yeah, sorry, you were saying?
- 44:23I will say in terms of this film, so Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern, there's a lot of sexy scenes.
- 44:31And yes, they wanted David Lynch wanted them to be comfortable. They want to be comfortable with each other. So they need to be like more personally closer to like perform these scenes.
- 44:41So they decided to take a road trip to Vegas together.
- 44:45300 miles, just Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern just driving through the desert.
- 44:50Sucking and fucking.
- 44:51Just to get to know each other.
- 44:52Yeah, that's cool. That's a cute little story.
- 44:55Sucking and fucking. It's the only way to take a road trip from what I've heard.
- 44:59It's the only way to know someone truly.
- 45:01Is to suck them dry.
- 45:04That or eat ribs.
- 45:06If you eat ribs with a guy, you know that guy.
- 45:09Only true a man by walking a thousand miles in his shoes and then sucking him dry.
- 45:15Can you imagine the like sweaty shaft after a thousand miles?
- 45:21You said a thousand consecutive miles.
- 45:23I think that's the only way.
- 45:24Because, okay, good, because you and I do go on walks a lot.
- 45:26We do.
- 45:27I'm worried.
- 45:28Oh fuck, we do have marathons together. Yeah, we're getting up there.
- 45:31Yeah, we've got some mileage together. Sucking and fucking time.
- 45:35You've been running these marathons, going on these walks. Like the Proclaimers song, I would walk 500 miles.
- 45:42I would not walk 500 more.
- 45:43Well, you're not going to get sucked and fucked with that attitude, but you're running, you're rock hard, knowing that the end goal is that you're just going to both drop to your knees and jump at each other like a sick twisted zero.
- 45:54A full 69.
- 45:57Well, you do a stand up 69 so you can cartwheel across the finish line together.
- 46:01In fact, you can finish together.
- 46:05Oh, we would.
- 46:06Our podcast just got very lynchian.
- 46:08Two people just put medals over our heads.
- 46:13Speaking of cartwheeling, Nick Cage does that sick somersault out of a car.
- 46:17Oh man, that was rad.
- 46:18Sweet.
- 46:19Yeah, he was totally amped up and at his most athletic.
- 46:22For me, I don't care that much about the plot of this movie.
- 46:26It's just like the style of it is fucking cool.
- 46:29I had such a good time watching it.
- 46:31Yeah, the plot. I mean, there's not a whole lot to it.
- 46:33It's a pretty simple story.
- 46:35It's Nicholas Cage is recently released out of jail.
- 46:39He and Lula decide to break parole and go down to New Orleans.
- 46:46She always talks about New Orleans.
- 46:47She wants to go dance and have fun.
- 46:49He's like, let's do it.
- 46:50So they get down there and then he's all like, I want to drive you all the way to California.
- 46:55It's like, OK, I mean, ambitious now.
- 46:58So they're going out that way and meanwhile, the mom is sending somebody to kill Nicholas Cage.
- 47:06And then mostly just because she's a jilted lover, right?
- 47:09No, because she thinks that he would like he saw Santos kill her husband, Santos being her.
- 47:18That's right. Like partner in crime and stuff.
- 47:21Yeah, I don't know.
- 47:22So Nick Cage was driving for Santos that night, the night that Laura Dern's character's Lula's father died.
- 47:28Yeah, she's just trying to tie up loose ends.
- 47:30I thought she was just mad because he wasn't going to fuck her.
- 47:32No, I think she was just trying to do that to like, I'm pretty sure I got a bathroom like, oh, well, they didn't show anything from the pants down.
- 47:41He could have been getting a hand job during that whole conversation in the stall because she gets like, I'm not going to say she's like, I want to suck you.
- 47:48And he says no.
- 47:49And then she drags him in there anyway.
- 47:51Yeah. And then this movie has a lot to learn about consent.
- 47:54Yes. Oh, fuck.
- 47:56Hell hath no fury like a mother scorned.
- 47:59So before going to see the movie with you, I was at our favorite watering hole and I was saying I was going to see this and the guy, stranger next to me at the bar, delivers the Snake Jacket line.
- 48:08And I'm like, is that a line from the movie? I haven't seen it yet.
- 48:11But then he also is like, so yeah, this movie is like really clever. It's like really, if you follow it, it really just follows like the narrative of the Wizard of Oz. I'm like, I don't think you understand what subtlety means, sir, because they just referenced the movie a lot.
- 48:25Yeah, I don't recall anybody getting a new heart at the end.
- 48:29Remember the time in the Wizard of Oz when the really big ladies showed up and started dancing with their boobs out and like the cowboy like stood in the background?
- 48:39The film in a porno, Texas style.
- 48:42It took me a moment. I want to know what Texas style is.
- 48:45Because everything's bigger in Texas. So they had the really big ladies. Like these ladies were big. These were like Houston.
- 48:52This film also, all star cast and there's a lot of top villain in this movie for people who are barely in it. Crispin Glover is in the opening credits and he has less than two minutes of screen time.
- 49:01I fucking love a Crispin Glover cameo and this one did not disappoint either.
- 49:07For something that lasts for two minutes and has no consequence at all.
- 49:11Oh, yeah. I'm making my lunch.
- 49:14So Dell is just Lula's cousin and he's got some mental problems.
- 49:22They just talk about like him like with cockroaches in his underwear.
- 49:26He has one on his anus and he does his little like anus dance.
- 49:30And he has the dirtiest Santa Claus costume.
- 49:34He wants it to be Christmas all year round.
- 49:38David Lynch is such a weird director. Like he has such an interest in like the grotesques of the world.
- 49:44And I think that it's really pretty fascinating because he always puts these people in his movies that like look off or have weird bonk eyes or whatever it might be.
- 49:53And it's just it's really interesting. I mean, I don't know if he wants to showcase that or if he is just like, look at this weird shit. I can't tell.
- 50:02Yeah, I'm sure there's better motive than just look at this one. But maybe I don't know.
- 50:08But then again, I have watched his black and white weather reports. So I'm not sure anymore.
- 50:14Did you guys notice that one of the guys at the party, the Texas porno party, was the main actor from Eraserhead?
- 50:20No, I missed that. Is that the dog line? I have a dog.
- 50:24And then there was that guy who's got the nice stagmas where his pupils are always moving.
- 50:29He loves his weirdness. He loves his freaks. He loves the unusual.
- 50:34And I mean, like the first time I sort of watched Wild at Heart, like the story is like good. It's fine.
- 50:39It's the whole like forbidden love kind of thing with just some weird elements.
- 50:42I didn't really care too much for the story of it, but it's just very interestingly shot.
- 50:47And then Willem Dafoe turns up with the world's tiniest teeth and it's just like, you're disgusting. I hate you.
- 50:57They linger on those teeth so much.
- 51:00The teeth and mustache combination that...
- 51:03Bobby Peru. How do you know the name of my doctor teeth cover band?
- 51:08The great Bobby Peru. The tights over the face and he's just like got the saliva in his mouth.
- 51:15And he's just a creep. Just absolutely repulsive human being.
- 51:19Yeah. You don't have time for Bobby Peru.
- 51:23Bobby Peru could eat a peach for hours.
- 51:27I bet he could. That's my mashup.
- 51:29Because he doesn't have enough big teeth.
- 51:32Oh, I did find the connective tissue. Lula does have a whole line about how like the ozone layer is going to go away and the Earth's just going to like be consumed by the sun.
- 51:4129 years later, who would have thought?
- 51:441919. I forgot how time works. I'm thinking about Bobby Peru's teeth still.
- 51:51What do you think of Laura Dern in this?
- 51:54I love Laura Dern. I mean, that's great.
- 51:57Laura Dern is a fox. I'll say I think she's great in this.
- 52:00I think like she said about the road trip earlier, obviously that's really paid off because I think the relationship feels like so real and powerful and the sex scenes don't feel like they're just putting him for the sake of it.
- 52:13Like they feel like they complete this relationship and it's a meaningful part of what makes them sort of compatible together as well.
- 52:21And you sort of feel for both of them. Like you kind of, you know, even though the story is, it's just like a lot of weird beats that sort of go in a weird sort of tangential disparate line.
- 52:33But I think the relationship between them is great. Great. Laura Dern is fantastic in this.
- 52:39Obviously her actual mother, Diane Ladd, who plays Marietta as well, is great. I think her mother got nominated for supporting.
- 52:47Yeah, it was the best supporting actress. Yeah.
- 52:49For the weird lipstick shit, I'm sure.
- 52:51Reds up her face and looks like old WWF manager Brother Love.
- 52:56Just, if you don't know who Brother Love is, like listeners, Google it and I promise you that's the most accurate reference you will hear on an episode.
- 53:04That is the only fact you'll ever get from this podcast.
- 53:10One of the things, so you talked about the sex scenes and the chemistry. I actually really did kind of buy them as a couple.
- 53:16But one of my favorite quotes was Laura Dern goes, you got me hotter than Georgia asphalt.
- 53:21And he goes, say no more, baby, but go easy on me because tomorrow we got a lot of driving.
- 53:26Yeah.
- 53:28This movie has such amazing line reads from everybody. Oh, absolutely.
- 53:34Well, Cage and Dern on their little road trip, developed their characters and they developed it as like two sides of one character.
- 53:43So like that's how they get like really great chemistry.
- 53:46I'm sure it's just that kind of definition of her playing the wilder, sexier side and him playing like that loose cannon.
- 53:54But like everything's the same. They're the same person. They complete each other.
- 53:58This is the third film I want to say where Nick Cage plays a character who gets out of prison and brings his child, a stuffed animal.
- 54:06Are we third or fourth? Because we've got the lion, the rabbit, the teddy bear.
- 54:12Because we have stolen, Conair and this.
- 54:15Now, I forgot about fucking stolen. We all did.
- 54:26But yeah, this movie has such astounding line reads.
- 54:31OK, I didn't save like a single quote. I have most of the movie.
- 54:40It's a total transcript. While you're reading that, I'll give mine.
- 54:45So at the end of the film, after he leaves, he gets out of jail again for being involved in a bank robbery gone wrong.
- 54:53He gets beset upon by the most interracial gang I've ever seen in a movie.
- 54:58And they just and he calls them a word for homosexuals and immediately gets like curb stomped where he sees, you know,
- 55:08the good way to tell them to go back to Lula and he just stands up, knows all fucked up.
- 55:13He just goes, I'd like to apologize to you gentlemen for refer to you all as homosexuals.
- 55:17You taught me a valuable lesson in life and then walks away.
- 55:21So you're taking culpability for his actions, learning from his mistakes.
- 55:25It's a growing moment. Yeah, this is a morality film.
- 55:30Yeah. And I feel like I've grown because of it.
- 55:34All right. So here's a line reading of the entire movie by Nick.
- 55:39Apparently, I saved a bunch of things that also weren't Nicholas Cage quotes like just Dell saying, I'm making my lunch.
- 55:47And then I know that just says, I love Crispin Glover.
- 55:50So that's it didn't get better when I moved away from audio notes to just writing them down.
- 55:56It's it's still all pretty garbage in here.
- 55:59But I think the second reading of the Snakeskin Jacket quote is my favorite of the two where he's in the club.
- 56:09And the guy who's credited as idiot punk just is like, you look like a clown in that stupid jacket.
- 56:17And say, this is a Snakeskin Jacket.
- 56:20And for me, it's a symbol of my individuality and my belief in personal freedom.
- 56:26And I feel it. I feel it as well.
- 56:28And I want a Snakeskin Jacket now as well.
- 56:30I have priced out Snakeskin Jackets after watching this, and it is definitely more expensive than just a Wild at Heart t-shirt.
- 56:39Plus, I can sleep in the t-shirt.
- 56:41You can sleep in a Snakeskin Jacket.
- 56:44Darrell, did you have a quote for this beautiful flick?
- 56:47So three that stuck out to me.
- 56:49There was a Bobby Peru quote where he describes what he calls sailor Mr. Big Round Balls,
- 56:56which I really enjoyed.
- 56:58There was one of those lynching characters who serves nothing to the story.
- 57:02They're sitting by that guy with a really high pitched voice at the bar.
- 57:06Yes.
- 57:07And he's going, yeah, yeah, pigeons spread diseases. Yeah.
- 57:11And then after that, sailor says he's telling a story about someone he'd slept with prior to Lula.
- 57:19And he goes, I had a boner with a capital O.
- 57:23That was my backup.
- 57:24I'm glad we got that in there.
- 57:26Yeah. It's a boner.
- 57:28Bonified boner.
- 57:31Boy, are you lying.
- 57:33I love alliteration.
- 57:35Oh, man. Yeah, this movie.
- 57:37So there are so many like just really weird scenes that caught my eye, like that that are very David Lynch,
- 57:45like one of the ones that I really love that it's not a fast moving scene.
- 57:50It doesn't hold a lot for the plot.
- 57:54But when they're at that gas station and sailors fueling up and Lula's just dancing in the car to the radio
- 58:01and that older black guy is just sitting there like kind of snapping his fingers and kind of slowly jamming.
- 58:07And it's just all the like little musical breakdowns that would happen.
- 58:12It reminded me a lot of Twin Peaks, which I'm initially familiar with for David Lynch.
- 58:18So a lot of my tie ins go back to that.
- 58:21I really like the guy humping the floor at the metal show, too.
- 58:25Oh, just. Yeah. So he sings completely after he beats up the punk.
- 58:30Oh, and the punk falls on a cigarette and goes, oh, like after he beats up the punk, he those are the noises we make.
- 58:39He gets he gets the microphone.
- 58:41He's like, you guys know the song.
- 58:42And he like just starts crooning and immediately everyone is playing the fucking right Elvis song.
- 58:47They know. I love it.
- 58:50It's weird and it's awesome.
- 58:52And yeah, I know I'm going to go to the cage. Good movie.
- 58:55Yeah, I love that.
- 58:57Nicolas Cage insisted on recording, like singing his own songs like he sang it all.
- 59:03Yeah, it's good.
- 59:05What do you think of his fake nose at the end?
- 59:12That kind of nose comes with a free bowl of soup.
- 59:14So Nick Cage credits this film with being the movie that really got him out of like, oh, out of method acting, out of method acting, because the script was being rewritten so often that he just couldn't.
- 59:27So he just got to like play around with it a lot more.
- 59:30I think it worked.
- 59:31Yeah, I think what he brought to the performance of the character of sailor was like on par with me for some of his like other like just greatest weird character roles like Peter Lowe or all of his stuff and like Mandy.
- 59:48Just really strange and like good intensity and just bonkers content.
- 59:54So it was good for me. I really liked it.
- 59:57Any closing thoughts on this film, Darryl?
- 59:59God, this is like Midwesterners kicking you out of their house.
- 1:00:02They're just like, well, about that time.
- 1:00:07We slap our thighs as we groan and stand up.
- 1:00:09Well, it's pointing at the door time.
- 1:00:14It crosses the water.
- 1:00:16Yeah.
- 1:00:17It's a universal it's time to leave.
- 1:00:19One of the hot it's it's very standout one for a lot of people.
- 1:00:27I think there's a lot of people who you find will place this maybe in their top five cage movies.
- 1:00:32I wasn't too hot on it the first time I saw it because I'd seen Twin Peaks.
- 1:00:36But in terms of like Lynch movies, this was the first one that I'd seen.
- 1:00:41So I guess I was like, I don't really know what's going on with all of this.
- 1:00:45But on a rewatch with reflection as well, it's warmed up a lot more to me.
- 1:00:50Like I'm a lot sweeter on the love story element of it and a bit more accepting of these lynching elements of throwing all this Wizard of Oz stuff in there.
- 1:00:59And, you know, unlike knowing at least the ending makes some semblance of sense.
- 1:01:05So I have to take that into account as well.
- 1:01:07The lovers get back together.
- 1:01:09They have a boy that's not been abducted by aliens.
- 1:01:13So I think that's a win on both counts.
- 1:01:17But yeah, I think it gets a little bit better with each watch as you get a bit more used to what you're seeing.
- 1:01:21So, yeah, I'm a fan.
- 1:01:23I'm a fan of Wild at Heart.
- 1:01:25And I think it's there's a reason why a lot of people sort of credit it so highly in sort of cages filmography as well.
- 1:01:32And he won the Pond or in 1990, which apparently people hated.
- 1:01:36But you know what? To the 1990s French.
- 1:01:38Fuck you. Yeah, apparently the booze like kind of drowned out the applause for that film and it won the award.
- 1:01:45Yeah, the French didn't like him.
- 1:01:47I mean, if the French were satisfied, would anybody else ever truly be satisfied?
- 1:01:52Just sounds terrible.
- 1:01:54They're best or at their best when they're suffering.
- 1:01:57Shame on Roger Ebert as well.
- 1:01:59He's usually quite a big cage defender.
- 1:02:01So so not that it matters because ultimately only Mick, in my opinion, here matters. But Darryl, what would you put forward?
- 1:02:08I think on the basis that because the film at least has a through line that makes sense by the end, I would have to give it to Wild at Heart.
- 1:02:16And No Aliens is an instant win in my book.
- 1:02:20Yeah, I mean, that's where I was sound logic.
- 1:02:23I mean, I would have passed it forward with less even just not being a Rapture movie.
- 1:02:30Is good enough for me.
- 1:02:32I also like to take into account, like if I could show this to somebody who had never seen it before, would I get enjoyment out of it?
- 1:02:40And that this is one that I would get enjoyment watching somebody else watch for the first time.
- 1:02:45I love it.
- 1:02:46You hear that, patrons? Join our join our twenty dollar tier and let Mick watch you watch Wild at Heart.
- 1:02:53Yeah, that's literally just my girlfriend. So I don't think she's going to pay twenty dollars to continue living with me every month.
- 1:03:00Yeah, she's only on the five dollar tier.
- 1:03:02Yeah. So yeah, Wild at Heart goes for it, obviously.
- 1:03:07Yeah, no, that makes sense.
- 1:03:09We do have some this week in cage news because his new movie, which I had no idea was even happening.
- 1:03:16What's it called again? The retirement retirement plan trailer dropped.
- 1:03:20And I don't remember if you said this to me, Nick, or if I just saw this online.
- 1:03:25But the like number one comment being, thank God, Gary Faulkner is back.
- 1:03:30Yeah, that came up on Reddit and it looks good.
- 1:03:33I spoke to the people on that thread and I told them that I was real excited for Army of Two where Lizzie comes back in her wheelchair and like the two of them go on spy hijinks and try to take down Putin.
- 1:03:46So that's that's going to be the the sequel to Army of One.
- 1:03:50I just can't wait for those katanas to come out the side of the oh, she's got like those spikes on the side of her wheels like truckers.
- 1:03:56So like she gets going really hard and like careens into another car, shreds their tires and then it flips.
- 1:04:02Michael Bay is going to direct it. It's going to be so good.
- 1:04:06Oh, I'm not. I'm so excited because I get to watch you watch it.
- 1:04:12And even though it's the second time, I'm still going to get enjoyment from watching you watch it.
- 1:04:16It'll be my third time.
- 1:04:18Yeah.
- 1:04:20I fucking love that movie.
- 1:04:24No, Darryl, thank you for being here.
- 1:04:26Really appreciated you hopping on with us.
- 1:04:28Thank you.
- 1:04:29I've had a blast being on the show.
- 1:04:31You can join me on my journey to what I call true caged Nirvana.
- 1:04:35Covering all the films of the man I refer to as the golden hog of Hollywood, Nick of the cage from Valley Girl all the way up to the present day over on cage rage and Nick of the cage podcast and all the usual streaming services.
- 1:04:47It can find me in all the social platforms as well.
- 1:04:50And at the point recording, I am in the venturing venturing into the world of Willem Dafoe, who also stars in Wild at Heart in a podcast venture called Getting Dafoe You, where we go in season by season, looking at the works of Willem Dafoe
- 1:05:04and getting to know Dafoe a little better through all the highs and the lows of Willem Dafoe and his getting Dafoe You.
- 1:05:12And you can find that on all the social platforms, Dafoe You pod, and all the streaming services as well.
- 1:05:19It's really upsetting when our guests are better at our jobs than us.
- 1:05:21Well, I mean, we shouldn't be surprised by this.
- 1:05:23That's fine.
- 1:05:25We have the power of editing.
- 1:05:26You're going to look like such an asshole at the end of this.
- 1:05:29You're going to throw so many trombones at me in editing.
- 1:05:32You're going to be bleeped out and we're going to come back in later with like, whoa, whoa, whoa, you can't say that in America.
- 1:05:37Or Daryl.
- 1:05:40There's only three of those words allowed in America.
- 1:05:43You're going to edit so many slurs over me.
- 1:05:45But they're all going to be in my voice weirdly enough.
- 1:05:47But we're going to pretend like it was you the whole time.
- 1:05:50You're going to be like, yes, I thought Willem Dafoe was...
- 1:05:57Finally, we got one in.
- 1:05:58Yes.
- 1:06:00Thank you for showing some restraint for the last two hours.
- 1:06:04Yeah, I really respect that.
- 1:06:06Thank you. You can't see me, obviously, because you're listening to this podcast, but I've been pouring with sweat to play the trumpet the whole time.
- 1:06:14He's just been holding it.
- 1:06:15It's been really weird.
- 1:06:17It's like, Daryl, why is your face so red?
- 1:06:19Shut up and keep talking.
- 1:06:23Maintain.
- 1:06:24All right, so next up, next episode, we've got Gone in 60 Seconds and Ghostwriter's Spirit of Vengeance going head to head with our guest, John.
- 1:06:33It'll be an interesting one to dive into.
- 1:06:35I'm excited.
- 1:06:36I have only seen Spirit of Vengeance in theaters, and I remember loving it because it's weird and wacky, and it's got the Highlander in it.
- 1:06:44I can't wait to see what John brings his background of nuclear rocket science tree into Nicolas Cage film.
- 1:06:51It'll be relevant.
- 1:06:52I don't know.
- 1:06:53Probably.
- 1:06:54Plus, we get to talk about really greasy Giovanni Robisi.
- 1:06:58Greasy Robisi.
- 1:07:01That's almost as good as a touch of Tucci.
- 1:07:03That's our next podcast, Touch of Tucci and Greasy with Robisi.
- 1:07:07All right, everyone.
- 1:07:08Thanks for listening.
- 1:07:09You can find us on Instagram at Cage underscore match underscore pod and Reddit at Cage Match pod.

- 1:07:24And special thanks to our Cage dancers, Ira, John and Freeman.
- 1:07:27Anything else?
- 1:07:28Last thoughts?
- 1:07:29Daryl, wisdom to leave us on?
- 1:07:31You know, as I say in my podcast, keep on, keep on caging.
- 1:07:37It's all you've got to do.
- 1:07:38He will show you the way to true Cage Nirvana and present us all with a golden hog.
- 1:07:43I don't know.
- 1:07:44Sucking and fucking.
- 1:07:45What a life.
- 1:07:46We're all we're all just sucking and fucking away through life in five years.
- 1:07:49We all made it a cages pyramid in New Orleans with champagne and fried chicken.
- 1:07:55Absolutely.
- 1:07:56And a box of spiders.
- 1:07:57Spiders for Darryl.
- 1:07:59So you have the experience.
- 1:08:00I want to try the whole thing.
- 1:08:02I'm not coming.
- 1:08:03I hate you guys.
- 1:08:04I hate everything about this.
- 1:08:06Bye bye.
- 1:08:16Heads or tails?
- 1:08:19You're just flipping your phone.
- 1:08:21I'm getting a new one.
- 1:08:22That's true.
- 1:08:23Flip it.
- 1:08:24Heads.
- 1:08:25Tails.
- 1:08:26I didn't determine which one was what.
- 1:08:29Now you have to throw your phone again.
- 1:08:31But you should try it on the hardwood.
- 1:08:34Heads is knowing.
- 1:08:35I mean the softwood.
- 1:08:36Knowing it is.
- 1:08:37Knowing it is.
- 1:08:38It's not anything on my phone.
- 1:08:39That's where my notes are.
- 1:08:40I'm actually really happy that you're getting a new phone.
- 1:08:43People with single digit iPhones creep me out.
- 1:08:46Thanks for doing our Defoe podcast.
- 1:08:51A friend of mine is editing it for us and he's very insistent that we hydrate.
- 1:08:57And that's all that's drilled into me when I sit down to record anything now is hydrate,
- 1:09:01hydrate.
- 1:09:02I drink anything slightly carbonated or gassy.
- 1:09:06I'm just belching the whole way through a record.
- 1:09:09Yeah, we just make bad audio.
- 1:09:11Yeah.
- 1:09:12All my parts get edited out.
- 1:09:15Not all of them.
- 1:09:17There's been a couple that have made the cut.
- 1:09:19Oh yeah, nice.
- 1:09:20They squeaked in.
