- 0:38We've got this.
- 0:41Welcome back friends.
- 0:42I hope you guys are having a great weekend.
- 0:45I am recording this on Easter Sunday and we had a great time going to Cracker Barrel.
- 0:52Shout out to Cracker Barrel.
- 0:54And we've also had a fun Easter egg hunt in our house, so that was cool.
- 1:01And I'm really excited to dig into our topic today.
- 1:05Our episode is going to be about clutter and how clutter isn't just in your home, but it's
- 1:11in your mind too.
- 1:13And we're going to talk about how to feel in control again.
- 1:18And isn't that exciting?
- 1:19That sounds good to me.
- 1:21So let me just say this right up front.
- 1:23If your home feels cluttered, there's a really good chance your mind does too.
- 1:28And I don't mean that in a judgmental way.
- 1:30I really don't.
- 1:31I just mean this is why you feel the way you feel kind of way.
- 1:36Because a lot of you are walking around thinking, why can't I just get it together?
- 1:40Why do I feel so behind?
- 1:42Why does everything feel so overwhelming?
- 1:45And the answer isn't that you're lazy.
- 1:48It's that you're overloaded.
- 1:50Every pile in your house is a decision that has not been made.
- 1:55Every drawer is something that's not resolved.
- 1:58And every space is something your brain is still tracking.
- 2:03Your environment is constantly talking to your brain.
- 2:06And if everything around you feels unfinished, your mind never gets to rest.
- 2:11I mean, how many times have you walked by something and you make a mental note, oh,
- 2:16I got to get that done.
- 2:17Oh, why haven't I gotten that done?
- 2:19That box is still sitting there.
- 2:20I mean, that's what we're talking about today.
- 2:24And there's a concept from James Clear.
- 2:26He's wrote the book Atomic Habits.
- 2:28And he says, clarity is elimination of noise.
- 2:32And most of you are trying to get clarity by thinking more.
- 2:36But clarity doesn't come from thinking more.
- 2:38It comes from removing what doesn't belong.
- 2:42So I want to talk to you about a tool.
- 2:44You may have already heard of it before, but some of you may not.
- 2:47And it's called a brain dump.
- 2:50And we're not going to organize your whole life here.
- 2:53We're just going to get everything that's in your head out on a piece of paper.
- 2:59So if you can, stop what you're doing and grab a piece of paper.
- 3:03I want you to write down all your to do's, all the things you're avoiding, all the decisions
- 3:09you haven't made, and your random thoughts.
- 3:12If it is in your mind, I want you to put it on the paper.
- 3:16And listen, you're not solving your life right now.
- 3:19What we're doing is just clearing up space.
- 3:22Because there's something cool that happens.
- 3:24When it's on paper, it stops yelling at you.
- 3:28And let me also say this.
- 3:31Some of you aren't just overwhelmed.
- 3:34You're exhausted from trying to do everything perfectly.
- 3:39Who are my perfectionists out there?
- 3:41Guys, this is called perfectionism fatigue.
- 3:45You overthink, you over plan, and you wait until you can do it just right.
- 3:52But then nothing gets done, right?
- 3:55Perfectionism doesn't make your life better.
- 3:57It just keeps you stuck.
- 4:00And you're really just doing too much.
- 4:03Some of you guys are doing double, triple, sometimes quadruple the work.
- 4:09Because you won't decide.
- 4:11You think about it.
- 4:13You rethink it.
- 4:14You second guess it.
- 4:16You revisit it.
- 4:17That's not one decision.
- 4:19That's five.
- 4:20You're not overwhelmed because you have too much to do.
- 4:24You're overwhelmed because you keep doing the same things over and over in your head.
- 4:30So what does scripture say about this?
- 4:32In James 1.8 it says, a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.
- 4:40All his ways.
- 4:42And I think a lot of us are living this out.
- 4:45We don't even realize it.
- 4:46You decide, then you question it.
- 4:49You choose, then you keep looking.
- 4:51You set a boundary, but then you go back on it.
- 4:54You're constantly switching direction.
- 4:57And your mind, guys, it never settles.
- 5:02And scripture also says this, 1 Corinthians 14.33 says, God is not a God of confusion,
- 5:09but of peace.
- 5:10So if your mind feels chaotic, if everything feels noisy and overwhelming, that's not how
- 5:17you're meant to live.
- 5:20So let me give you something to hold on to.
- 5:23Done and decided beats perfect every single time.
- 5:28Let me say that again.
- 5:29Done and decided beats perfect every single time.
- 5:34Because you can adjust something that's done, but you can't fix something you never even
- 5:40started.
- 5:41Okay?
- 5:42Some of you are trying to perfect things that don't even exist.
- 5:46It's like editing a book you haven't written.
- 5:49You can't refine something you haven't done.
- 5:52So I want you to start messy and finish strong.
- 5:57I did that with the podcast.
- 5:58I would have never published any of these episodes if I hadn't just decided to start
- 6:04messy.
- 6:05Okay?
- 6:06So I want you guys to think about that.
- 6:08Now here's something practical that will change everything.
- 6:11Some of you aren't stuck because you don't know what to do.
- 6:15You're stuck because you have too many options.
- 6:19So here's the rule.
- 6:20Give yourself a time limit or give yourself an option limit.
- 6:24So this could look like giving yourself 10 minutes to make a decision.
- 6:29Or you say, I have three options to pick from, and that's it.
- 6:33Because your brain, I promise you, it will take as long as you give it.
- 6:38And the more options you give it, it does not actually create better decisions.
- 6:42They just create delayed ones.
- 6:45And I want you to think of indecision as clutter.
- 6:49It's just cluttering your mind and your life.
- 6:52This is why I value simplicity in my life.
- 6:57I don't wake up every day wondering what I'm going to eat.
- 6:59I talked about this in a previous episode that I decide to rotate the same two to three
- 7:06breakfasts, the same two to three lunches, and the same two to three dinners.
- 7:10That's called automating your food.
- 7:12And it makes life so much simpler.
- 7:15And I do the same thing with my workout clothes.
- 7:17I just have a handful of outfits that I wear because it's the less I have to decide.
- 7:24And it gives me more energy for what I actually think matters.
- 7:28And not everything in your life needs to be a fresh decision.
- 7:32Like someone needs to hear that out there.
- 7:34I am just as much like on board with the fresh idea and the many options.
- 7:43And I love that too.
- 7:44But it really just makes it exhausting to do that every day.
- 7:50James Clear says, standardize before you optimize.
- 7:55Again, most of you are trying to make everything perfect before you've made it consistent.
- 8:01And then he also says, simplicity is the secret to creating habits that last.
- 8:08Simple is what gets repeated.
- 8:10And simple is what gets done.
- 8:14So here's what we're going to do instead.
- 8:16You've already done the brain dump, right?
- 8:18You've gotten everything out of your head and you put it on paper.
- 8:21Now we're not looking at this list thinking, how do I do all this?
- 8:25We're asking what actually matters today?
- 8:30And I also have a method called the have to and the want to method.
- 8:33So from your brain dump, you're going to pull your have to's.
- 8:37So these are all the things that are time sensitive, the things that truly need to get
- 8:42done and need your attention today.
- 8:45Not everything that feels urgent is.
- 8:50And then I want you to pick one want to from the same list.
- 8:55And this is going to be something that lights you up, moves your life forward, creates clarity
- 9:00or something that you've been avoiding.
- 9:02And that's it.
- 9:03You're not going to do everything on that paper.
- 9:07You're deciding what gets done today.
- 9:10Your brain dump shows you everything.
- 9:13And this method will help you to see what matters.
- 9:17So what are we going to do about the rest?
- 9:18I know that's what some of you are thinking.
- 9:21Well the list is long, right?
- 9:23But here's the answer.
- 9:24Not everything is for today, but everything needs a place.
- 9:28So what we're going to do is one of three things.
- 9:31For the rest of the items on your list, you're going to either one, assign it to a day this
- 9:36week.
- 9:37So it could be for Tuesday or Wednesday or Friday.
- 9:40You're going to push it out on number two.
- 9:42So if it's not this week, we're going to pick another week within this month.
- 9:48Or if you know next month it's a better day, then I want you to write it on the calendar
- 9:52for that day.
- 9:54And then number three is you're going to remove it.
- 9:56So these are items that actually don't matter or it's not for you.
- 10:01So maybe you can delegate this to somebody, whether it be your husband or your kids, a
- 10:06coworker, if it's like work related.
- 10:08We're going to go ahead and remove that off of our list.
- 10:13And if it doesn't have a place, it stays in your head.
- 10:17So we need to decide when it's going to get done so we can get it done and out of your
- 10:23head.
- 10:24Okay.
- 10:25And this is a boundary, guys.
- 10:27Stop putting 20 things on Monday like you're a robot.
- 10:30You know you're not going to get to those 20 things.
- 10:34So be realistic about your capacity.
- 10:38We are not carrying everything in our heads anymore.
- 10:41Ladies, we've got to stop doing that.
- 10:44We're deciding it once and we're giving it a place.
- 10:48So let me bring all this together for you.
- 10:50Your home isn't the only thing that's cluttered.
- 10:53Your mind is too.
- 10:56And your expectations might be as well.
- 10:59You are not stuck.
- 11:01You are just buried under too much.
- 11:04Too many decisions, too many options, too many open loops.
- 11:08Like when you have all those windows open on your computer, we got to close them out.
- 11:11We got to clear it.
- 11:12We got to decide.
- 11:13We got to move.
- 11:15Not perfectly, but consistently.
- 11:18Because your life is not waiting on perfection.
- 11:21It's just waiting on a decision.
- 11:25If you're tired of people pleasing, confused on what your boundaries should be, and want
- 11:30simple steps to create peace in your home, establish clear boundaries, and finally have
- 11:35the satisfaction you crave, you're in the right place.
- 11:38Hey, I'm Lori, wife and mom of teens, and your Practical Boundaries Mentor.

- 11:48satisfaction in my life.
- 11:50If you're ready for peace in the chaos, practical boundaries, and a life that actually
- 11:55feels satisfying, set aside that to-do list, pop in your earbuds, and press play.
