- 0:00Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:03access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing genuine
- 0:07issues. Brought to you by the
- 0:10hypnotherapist, demanded by celebrities, CEOs and even
- 0:14royalty. Adam Cox.
- 0:16These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:19world famous Harley Street. This podcast features powerful
- 0:23hypnosis, so do not listen while driving or operating machinery.
- 0:27This recording is not suitable for those with epilepsy or
- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:40Hi, it's Adam here. And in today's episode of The
- 0:43Hypnotist, you're going to be listening to a hypnosis session.
- 0:47Based. On a real session with the.
- 0:50Client that would. Get themselves into a spiral of
- 0:55self criticism, self doubt and self loathing.
- 0:59So typically what they would do is they would be in some kind of
- 1:03work situation quite often. Maybe it's being asked something
- 1:07and they had this feeling that they had to know the answer and
- 1:10immediately. Or maybe it was something they
- 1:12were being judged on. Or maybe they weren't being
- 1:15judged on, but they were judging themselves.
- 1:17But basically, they didn't meet incredibly, some would say
- 1:20impossibly high standards. And because of that, that then
- 1:24led to an internal onslaught of criticism.
- 1:29So whether you use this idea of a spiral or like one thing
- 1:33connects to the other, connects to the other.
- 1:35Some people call it a catch 22 or a vicious cycle.
- 1:40You know, all this element of a domino is more like a chain
- 1:42reaction. The first domino hits, the
- 1:44second hits, the third hits, the 4th like a chain reaction.
- 1:48It still links to the same thing for them.
- 1:50The starting point of all of this was impossibly high
- 1:54standards. And when you've got impossibly
- 1:56high standards, your probability of not meeting those impossibly
- 2:00high standards is very high, in which case you're highly likely
- 2:04then to fail because you didn't meet those standards, and then
- 2:08the chain reaction takes place. So if you feel that this is you,
- 2:11that you beat yourself up a lot very harsh, you know, you
- 2:14criticize yourself, you feel this element of you're a fraud,
- 2:18you're worthless. Like people are going to find
- 2:20you out and then catastrophize that.
- 2:22So you're going to lose your job, you're going to lose your
- 2:23relationship, you're going to lose XY and Z.
- 2:26You could probably connect with the essence of this.
- 2:29Now for them, they felt a heaviness like a like a
- 2:34twisting, not in their gut, but in their chest.
- 2:36And that's where the self loathing and the self doubt
- 2:39really based. So there is elements here of
- 2:42standard hypnotherapy with direct suggestions.
- 2:45There are metaphors, even the induction is a metaphor of a of
- 2:49a spiral, but also submodality shifts.
- 2:52And one of the things that in the early days of NLP Richard
- 2:56Bandler would talk about is this idea of these kinesthetic
- 3:00feelings inside the body quite often felt like they moved, like
- 3:04they twisted. And for this.
- 3:05Client it. Did it twisted in a clockwise
- 3:08direction? It felt like it was in their
- 3:09chest. So.
- 3:10Pulling it out and then doing the opposite and changing those
- 3:13submodalities can be very, very powerful to make someone feel
- 3:18different because effectively these are sensations, these are
- 3:22subjective evaluations, but they're true and real for that
- 3:26individual. Everyone's had this sense of,
- 3:29you know, feeling like some something isn't right.
- 3:31And that's how I feel it in my gut.
- 3:32Something's not right here. These are sensations, real
- 3:35sensations that feel real for that individual and they are
- 3:38linked to evaluations, emotions and and those kind of things.
- 3:42And when you change them, it actually changes a lot of
- 3:45things. So this is a 2 pronged attack,
- 3:49changing these impossibly high standards to manageable
- 3:52standards and manageable expectations, but also having
- 3:56the ability to reverse the spirals so it works for them
- 4:00rather than against them. So if you are harsh on yourself,
- 4:03you might benefit from this. It was created for someone
- 4:06specific, so you know, use what's useful, disregard what
- 4:10isn't. And if you like the idea of
- 4:12working with me directly, either go to my website
- 4:15whichisadamcox.co.uk or check a link in the show notes for an
- 4:21ability to schedule at a time that suits you.
- 4:24A free 30 minute consultation on Zoom.
- 4:26We'll have a chat and we'll see if I'm the right hypnotherapist
- 4:29for you. I may not be, but then again, I
- 4:31may be. And if you've listened to a lot
- 4:33of my sessions, your unconscious is already in rapport with my
- 4:37voice. You probably have an element of
- 4:39trust and confidence in me, which is why you keep listening
- 4:41to me. And therefore, as a
- 4:43hypnotherapist, I'm more likely to get results with you than
- 4:47someone that you don't know, you don't have that same level of
- 4:50trust or credibility and and your unconscious isn't in
- 4:53rapport with their voice. So a tiny bit of a sales pitch
- 4:55there for me. But I.
- 4:57Love doing hypnotherapy. I love working with people.
- 5:00And I have had feedback from people actually that because I'm
- 5:03on a quite a popular podcast and produce so much stuff, there's
- 5:07this idea that I'm out of reach and it would be impossible to
- 5:10work with me. And that intro of, you know,
- 5:13working with celebrities and CEOs, people say, well, that's
- 5:15not me, I'm not a celebrity, I'm not ACEO.
- 5:19Yeah, that's all true. I have worked with celebrity
- 5:20CEOs and royalty, but most of my sessions are everyday people
- 5:26motivated to make a change. And if that sounds like you,
- 5:29click that link, we'll have a chat.
- 5:31And maybe I become your hypnotherapist as well as
- 5:34hypnotherapist to the rich and famous too.
- 5:36So anyway, that's my sales pitch over.
- 5:38Hope that's useful for now though.
- 5:40For this session. Find a quiet, comfortable place
- 5:44where you won't be disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 6:20Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in a
- 6:27feeling of resourceful relaxation.
- 6:30And as you exhale, just allow any feelings of stress, worry,
- 6:36or tension to feel like it's leaving your body as you exhale,
- 6:45breathing in that feeling of resourcefulness and exhaling
- 6:52that tension. And just scan your body for any
- 6:56clues of tension. Maybe it's in your jaw, your
- 7:02neck, your shoulders, your forehead.
- 7:05And give permission for that tension to be released as you
- 7:12breathe in that relaxation. Allow the tension to dissolve,
- 7:18to melt away and feel it leave your body almost like a dark
- 7:25mist as you breathe out, enabling you to feel deeper and
- 7:34deeper, relaxed with each and every breath.
- 7:44I want you to get a sense that you're feeling more and more
- 7:49comfortable, and I want you to get a sense that you're about to
- 7:56go even deeper. I want you to use the power of
- 8:06your imagination to imagine a gigantic water slide, but I want
- 8:19you to imagine this water slide in a very specific shape.
- 8:25I want you to imagine it like a giant spiral.
- 8:32It's high up. It ends up in a warm pool of
- 8:37water, but it starts off wide, and then it gets narrower and
- 8:44narrower until it reaches the point where the water slide
- 8:51ends. And then you would fall into the
- 8:54water. And I want you to get a sense
- 8:58that this spiral is fun, reminding you of wonderful
- 9:04childhood memories where there was no expectations, nothing you
- 9:09had to do, right? All you needed to do was to
- 9:15slide and allow gravity to take you downwards.
- 9:23And I wonder if you could imagine what colour this water
- 9:27slide is. Is it a bright colour like
- 9:32yellow or blue or orange? And is there flowing water in
- 9:36the slide? Perhaps you can imagine being in
- 9:42your own water park, standing at the top of this giant spiral
- 9:48slide. And very soon I will count
- 9:52downwards from 12:50. When I say the number 10, you
- 9:57will imagine launching yourself into this spiral.
- 10:03And as I count downwards, you will imagine going down the
- 10:07spiral slide, and perhaps you can even slow down time that if
- 10:15it would take just a few seconds to go down this slide, make it
- 10:20slower, like you're going down the spiral slide in slow motion.
- 10:2710 launching into the slide, feeling a sense of fun, freedom,
- 10:33liberation, nothing to do, nothing to get right, just
- 10:39enjoy. And then nine.
- 10:42Continue down this spiral and as you go down the spiral, feel
- 10:48your body getting more relaxed, particularly your eyelids, your
- 10:53forehead. As nine becomes 8, continue down
- 10:58the spiral slide, releasing any tension, particularly in your
- 11:03neck and shoulders. You're feeling looser.
- 11:09And then seven, just feel your arms so relaxed and loose.
- 11:16Think of the loosest thing you can think of, maybe something
- 11:22like a damp cloth. No tension there at all.
- 11:30And then six, think of everything connected to your
- 11:33breathing, your nostrils, your windpipe, your lungs, even your
- 11:38diaphragm, and allow it all to relax.
- 11:43That's it. Five, you're halfway down this
- 11:47spiral slide now, but now you're relaxing all of your internal
- 11:53organs. Your lungs are already relaxed,
- 11:57but now relax your heart, your stomach, and in particular your
- 12:03gut. Just allow it to relax even
- 12:07deeper as five becomes 4 and that relaxation spreads
- 12:11downwards into your legs, and then three all the way down to
- 12:15your feet and then two. Just imagine it rippling up from
- 12:19your toes to the top of your head and then one down to the
- 12:22top of your head and down to the very bottom of your toes and the
- 12:27tips of your fingers, and then zero.
- 12:31Just imagine falling out of that spiral slide into a relaxing
- 12:37pool of warm water. But imagine you've got this
- 12:44water park all to yourself and find a very specific place in
- 12:49this water park that you would feel relaxed.
- 12:53And maybe it's some kind of Whirlpool or jacuzzi, or maybe
- 13:00it's a sun lounger or maybe something else.
- 13:05When you found that place to relax in, let me know by nodding
- 13:07your head. That's it.
- 13:16Feel yourself getting even deeper relaxed now in that
- 13:19relaxing place. As you look at that spiral, you
- 13:25get a sense. Then the moment you jumped into
- 13:28the top of that spiral slide, everything else happened all by
- 13:36itself. Gravity just took you all the
- 13:41way down. But if you never went into the
- 13:45slide, everything that followed also wouldn't have happened.
- 13:52I don't want you to think of the spirals that happened in your
- 13:55life, the chain reactions where one small thing leads to
- 14:01something else and leads to something else.
- 14:06And maybe some of these things relate to work and I wonder if
- 14:14there's certain ingredients that need to be there for some kind
- 14:20of chain reactions take place. I want you to think back to
- 14:28something that caused this spiral and maybe link it to did
- 14:35you have conscious or unconscious impossibly high
- 14:40standards? Words like should or enough give
- 14:48clues that the goal posts can always be moved if the thought
- 14:59is connected to I should have known that we should have done
- 15:04better. That wasn't enough.
- 15:07These are all clues that impossibly high standards are
- 15:12the very start of that spiral. And if it feels like that's
- 15:20true, let me know about nodding your head.
- 15:24I don't want you to get a sense of thinking about one of these
- 15:28things that caused the spiral and lowering your standards and
- 15:34expectations so that you absolutely exceed those very
- 15:43manageable expectations. Some people have the expectation
- 15:50that they will do their best. As long as they do their best,
- 15:55then that's enough. Some people have this idea, then
- 16:07they will try hard notice that when the expectations are linked
- 16:14to things that. You control.
- 16:18Your effort, your intention, your inclination, these become
- 16:23more manageably achievable. But when the standard is done,
- 16:36everything has to be perfect. Everything has to be 100% that
- 16:45if you could have done something even a tiny bit better than it
- 16:47wasn't enough. These are clues of impossibly
- 16:51high standards that you can never meet.
- 16:55Which is fine if it doesn't bother you that much, but if it
- 16:58creates a chain reaction, a spiral within you that it's
- 17:03hurting you, not helping you, I want you to decide on what feels
- 17:19like the perfect balance. Something that means you are
- 17:30diligent, ethical, you work hard, you concentrate, you think
- 17:35something through, but not impossibly high.
- 17:41Maybe good enough is that you do something that you believe is
- 17:47right at the time. Maybe you give 80% of your
- 17:55attention on something, knowing that 99 times out of 100 that
- 18:00will be more than enough. Think how much attention you
- 18:06give to walking, perhaps 0 or just 1% unless something in
- 18:17particular happens. And notice the less you think
- 18:23about walking, the better you do it.
- 18:29And your criteria for walking well is simply getting to
- 18:34wherever you want to get to, and therefore you already know what
- 18:39it's like to have winnable expectations.
- 18:47If success at walking is that you had to walk at the exact
- 18:50pace, in the exact rhythm, in a particular way in order to walk
- 19:00well, you would even get walking wrong.
- 19:04But you don't. As long as you get to where you
- 19:09want to get to, the way you walk is good enough and allow your
- 19:14mind to take this idea and map it across to how you work.
- 19:23You already know how to do most of this stuff.
- 19:27You can do it without thinking most of the time, and therefore
- 19:34enough is simply doing your best or meeting the expectations of
- 19:41someone else, so long as they're fair.
- 19:45And when your mind has adjusted these impossibly high
- 19:52expectations to realistic ones, let me know by nodding your
- 19:55head. And now it's time to think about
- 20:03implications. Catastrophization is where
- 20:10something small happens, but people assume it's going to have
- 20:13some devastating consequence. Most people have heard of the
- 20:20butterfly effect. If a butterfly flaps it's wings
- 20:28in the Amazon, it can create tornadoes in the Sahara.
- 20:37Or theoretically it could. If all it took was a butterfly
- 20:43to flap its wings to guarantee that happening, there would be
- 20:47devastation all around the world all the time.
- 20:51And there isn't. Just because something could
- 20:55happen doesn't mean it will happen.
- 21:01I want you to come to the conclusion, but whatever
- 21:06consequences or implications happen in your life, deserved or
- 21:12not, you can handle them. If your job doesn't work out,
- 21:19you can get another one. If a particular interaction
- 21:26doesn't work out, there will be other interactions.
- 21:32I want you to come to the conclusion that whatever
- 21:36happens, you'll be fine. It will all work out for you.
- 21:47I want you to get a sense that sometimes when bad things
- 21:53happen, they lead to good things.
- 22:00As you relax there in that water park, just imagine a scene in
- 22:04your mind's eye. Someone going to work in a job
- 22:13they really don't like, in an environment that isn't perfect
- 22:19for them. It pays well, some of the work
- 22:28is stimulating. It's not the right thing for
- 22:31them, but it's not enough to quit, not bad enough to not want
- 22:37to go there. And they're doing enough not to
- 22:41get fired. I want you to see that that
- 22:46person is in the wrong place but they will never quit because it
- 22:53isn't bad enough. Imagine this person at the job
- 23:00they don't really enjoy gets a really toxic horrible boss,
- 23:08makes their life a misery, makes it so bad that they do quit, and
- 23:16then they go on and find a much better job in a much better
- 23:19environment that makes them so much happier.
- 23:25Sometimes good things come from bad things, and sometimes it
- 23:33requires something really bad to lead to something much better.
- 23:41I want you to get a sense. Then you have infinitely more
- 23:45possibilities and options than you realise.
- 23:51You can handle whatever life throws at you, and if you've
- 23:56come to the conclusion, then whatever happens, you can
- 23:59manage. Let me know by nodding your
- 24:01head. That's in so now imagine that
- 24:12spiral, but no longer being a sly.
- 24:15Imagine a feeling in your chest. Go back to that time when you
- 24:23felt that heaviness there and when you can feel it, let me
- 24:30know by nodding your head. And just imagine you create a
- 24:35hologram version of it outside of your chest.
- 24:41If that sensation was an image, what would it be and what
- 24:51material would it be made from and would it be moving in a
- 24:57particular direction? And just imagine this hologram
- 25:01doing all of those things proportionate to what you're
- 25:05feeling. And if it looks like something
- 25:10heavy and perhaps moving in a particular pace, and you can
- 25:18imagine it like a hologram outside of your chest, just let
- 25:21me know about nodding your head. And I want you to try something.
- 25:28Try changing the material or even the shape of that thing so
- 25:35it becomes so much lighter. Maybe make it of feathers or
- 25:40carbon fibre, lightweight plastic, something so light and
- 25:46notice how it changes how you feel inside.
- 25:51Change the colour of it, the texture of it to make it really
- 25:55bright and fun. Imagine changing the direction
- 26:02of it and notice when you change the direction and the colour and
- 26:08the weight and the shape, the feeling also changes.
- 26:15And maybe when you spin it in the other direction it gives the
- 26:19opposite feeling. A feeling of capability,
- 26:26competency, self doubt turns to self trust.
- 26:33There's belief in your own abilities.
- 26:36A feeling that whatever happens, you'll either win or you'll
- 26:39learn, but either way, you're better off trusting yourself
- 26:44than doubting yourself. When this feeling becomes light
- 26:51where you trust yourself and confident, let me know by
- 26:55nodding your head and then place the hologram back in that exact
- 27:03location to keep it spinning in that new direction, that new
- 27:09colour, that new lightness. The trust is now the default way
- 27:18you will trust yourself unless there is irrefutable evidence
- 27:22not to. You will believe you can do
- 27:25something unless there is. Absolute.
- 27:28Evidence that you can't. You will start from the basis of
- 27:34competency, self belief and self trust unless there is enough
- 27:42evidence to dispel that. And in doing so, don't be
- 27:50surprised if when you get a question, you respond quickly.
- 27:56You quickly check something if you're not.
- 27:58Sure, but you? Go with your gut.
- 28:02You trust that you have the competency, you trust that
- 28:06everything will be fine, and if it isn't, you'll learn from it.
- 28:13I want you to get a sense that this feels more liberating, more
- 28:18free, that you get to enjoy your work and your life much more.
- 28:24And when it feels like this is how it's feeling now, you've
- 28:31lowered those impossibly high standards, created a belief that
- 28:35whatever happens you'll be fine, and felt that that heavy feeling
- 28:44is now giving you energy rather than taking it, giving you.
- 28:48Confidence. Rather than criticism, let me
- 28:54know by nodding your head. That's it.
- 28:59It's time to take all of these feelings back.
- 29:02And don't be surprised, in the next few days and weeks you
- 29:06start making different evaluations.
- 29:11It's what you do that sets the expectation, not something
- 29:19impossible to achieve. Catastrophization is replaced
- 29:25with perspective, a deep conviction that whatever
- 29:30happens, you'll be OK, and a growing sense that you can trust
- 29:35yourself, that most of your work is just like walking, and the
- 29:41less you think about it, the better it becomes.
- 29:47So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 29:52nose. Just wiggle your fingers and
- 29:55wiggle your toes. Connect fully into the here and
- 29:57now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 30:03Starting to count. 123 waking up 456, more alert. 7-8.
