- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yr
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order, Kerney Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 4: Millennials who want Financial Freedom. We are two weeks into
- 1:04Speaker 4: the new year, which means I don't know about everybody else,
- 1:06Speaker 4: but I'm thinking hot and hard about my goals. Last
- 1:09Speaker 4: week we spoke all about setting up your investment goals
- 1:13Speaker 4: for the year, but this week I wanted to get
- 1:14Speaker 4: a little bit more personal because Victoria and I are
- 1:17Speaker 4: both super goal oriented people. Speaking which Victoria, I haven't
- 1:21Speaker 4: even said hello to you yet.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Hello, thanks for having me on your show. Jescah, You're
- 1:24Speaker 2: welcome anytime. I feel like this episode is a goodie
- 1:28Speaker 2: because I talked to so many people about goal setting
- 1:30Speaker 2: and I love a good goal. You love a good goal,
- 1:32Speaker 2: but they're not always that achievable for other people, right, Like,
- 1:37Speaker 2: goals are not something that absolutely everybody resonates with, which
- 1:40Speaker 2: is why today we're talking about intentions, because sometimes intentions
- 1:45Speaker 2: are just a softer way of setting yourself up for
- 1:48Speaker 2: a really successful year without having the overlying pressure of
- 1:52Speaker 2: a specific goal. Yep. It's also one of those things
- 1:55Speaker 2: where sometimes you just can't think of a goal. You're like,
- 1:58Speaker 2: I just I don't have anything right now, Victoria. My
- 2:00Speaker 2: life's at a place where it's just not you know,
- 2:02Speaker 2: working to set them. And I think that this content
- 2:05Speaker 2: is one for you guys who are setting goals and
- 2:08Speaker 2: are really excited about it and also want to overlay
- 2:10Speaker 2: an intention, because to Jess and I this is really important.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But also if you're not a goal setting kind of
- 2:16Speaker 2: goal maybe you can set an intention and pick a
- 2:19Speaker 2: word of the year and be a little bit more
- 2:21Speaker 2: intentional about things without the added pressure of having a
- 2:24Speaker 2: really structured list of goals. So we'll kind of touch
- 2:27Speaker 2: on both today.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely something that I did this time last year.
- 2:31Speaker 4: If anyone follows me on Instagram, is I spoke about
- 2:33Speaker 4: how I picked a word for the ya like.
- 2:36Speaker 2: You just mentioned.
- 2:37Speaker 4: And it was really fun because I got to put
- 2:39Speaker 4: up a question box and I asked everyone to kind
- 2:41Speaker 4: of if they did the same thing or if they
- 2:42Speaker 4: wanted to do the same thing, to share that word
- 2:44Speaker 4: with me. And it was one very inspirational I got
- 2:47Speaker 4: a list of words that I really really liked, and
- 2:49Speaker 4: I actually picked my word for this year from that list.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Us. So you used the community to pick your intentions,
- 2:56Speaker 2: so you didn't even set your own. You stole someone else's.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I copied their test, I'm on.
- 3:01Speaker 4: But I really enjoyed it because picking a word for
- 3:05Speaker 4: the year really helped me to kind of ground myself
- 3:08Speaker 4: when I was making decisions. So last year, people suggested
- 3:12Speaker 4: things like gracious or purpose or heal or serene, and
- 3:15Speaker 4: I ended up going with growth, And every time I
- 3:18Speaker 4: was making a choice or every time I wasn't sure
- 3:20Speaker 4: what to do, I would kind of come back to
- 3:22Speaker 4: that word and go, are the growth option? Yeah? Are
- 3:24Speaker 4: the decisions that I'm making helping me to grow in
- 3:27Speaker 4: some way? And that kind of I picked a word
- 3:29Speaker 4: because I wanted it to apply across the board, like
- 3:32Speaker 4: personally and professionally, in my career, in my social life,
- 3:35Speaker 4: in all different aspects. I wanted to grow and develop,
- 3:39Speaker 4: and I felt like having that word really centered me
- 3:41Speaker 4: when I was trying to make those tougher choices.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Did you do something similar? Yeah, as you guys know,
- 3:46Speaker 2: that is something that I have done for the last
- 3:48Speaker 2: few years and absolutely adored it. It's evading me literally
- 3:51Speaker 2: right now what my word was because I feel like
- 3:53Speaker 2: I've just spent so long picking the word that is
- 3:56Speaker 2: going to be twenty twenty three. So I'm a little
- 3:58Speaker 2: bit embarrassed to say that. Yes, that's where I'm at. Jess,
- 4:02Speaker 2: all right, well tell me about twenty twenty three. What
- 4:04Speaker 2: word have you picked? So I have spent a very
- 4:08Speaker 2: long time picking this, and I feel like it makes
- 4:12Speaker 2: a bit more sense if I give you a little
- 4:14Speaker 2: bit of context. So obviously, last year I had a
- 4:18Speaker 2: really big year, really big. I launched a book, I
- 4:22Speaker 2: did a whole heap of pr I was working my
- 4:24Speaker 2: butt off. We bought a mortgage broking firm. We started
- 4:28Speaker 2: a collaboration between Kate and I to run Zella Money
- 4:31Speaker 2: which was obviously in the background, far bigger than I
- 4:34Speaker 2: guess what you guys see on social media. I got married,
- 4:37Speaker 2: I went on a honeymoon, I did a europe trip
- 4:39Speaker 2: like I had it coming out my ears. But during
- 4:43Speaker 2: that period of time, I also wasn't being my best
- 4:47Speaker 2: self in a way. I wasn't putting myself in a
- 4:49Speaker 2: position where I was still putting myself out there even
- 4:52Speaker 2: though you guys see that. There are a lot of
- 4:54Speaker 2: things I wanted to do that I wasn't doing. So
- 4:56Speaker 2: I wanted to do more video content, but I wasn't
- 4:58Speaker 2: comfortable enough to do it. I couldn't find a way to,
- 5:02Speaker 2: you know, find the theme that I wanted to talk about.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I'd like scroll through TikTok and be like, oh my gosh,
- 5:06Speaker 2: I feel like I could have such an impact in
- 5:08Speaker 2: this space, but I haven't done it yet. So I
- 5:11Speaker 2: feel like giving you that context that as much as
- 5:14Speaker 2: I did achieve a lot of shiny things, that's not
- 5:17Speaker 2: really what I wanted for this year. I think it's
- 5:19Speaker 2: about being gritty for me. So I feel like somebody
- 5:22Speaker 2: who is gritty is someone who if they get knocked down,
- 5:26Speaker 2: they just get back up and try and try again.
- 5:28Speaker 2: They're not the type of person that are, you know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: worried about what other people thinks, because they've got grit
- 5:34Speaker 2: and they've got substance and they are actually the type
- 5:36Speaker 2: of person that will just go for it. And I
- 5:38Speaker 2: feel like I haven't been that person. I mean, it
- 5:41Speaker 2: sounds like I have, please don't get me wrong. Like
- 5:43Speaker 2: I mean, a book is really impressive, please don't get
- 5:45Speaker 2: me wrong. But also i'd written one before, so it
- 5:47Speaker 2: felt like a really safe option. It felt really comfortable
- 5:51Speaker 2: for me to do that because I kind of knew
- 5:52Speaker 2: what I was going to get. And this year, I
- 5:54Speaker 2: really want to try new things, but I don't want
- 5:57Speaker 2: it to be like new things. So I have chosen
- 5:59Speaker 2: the word grit this year, And so for me, it's
- 6:02Speaker 2: about being a bit more gritty and being who I
- 6:04Speaker 2: want to be and showing up as me on every
- 6:07Speaker 2: platform that I have and in person as the person
- 6:10Speaker 2: that I want to be, not necessarily the person that
- 6:12Speaker 2: other people expect me to be, if that makes sense.
- 6:15Speaker 4: I love that. That's a really good word and it
- 6:17Speaker 4: kind of like leans a similar path to mine as well.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Last year I chose growth, which I feel like served
- 6:23Speaker 4: me very well and for twenty twenty three, I have
- 6:25Speaker 4: chosen the word assertive. People who know me personally and
- 6:29Speaker 4: you would be the perfect example know that I'm a
- 6:31Speaker 4: little bit more introverted and a little bit more shy.
- 6:34Speaker 4: I always describe myself as a bit of a doormat,
- 6:37Speaker 4: and I really want to work on that for twenty
- 6:38Speaker 4: twenty three. In I guess my social life because I'm
- 6:42Speaker 4: always that friend who will like.
- 6:43Speaker 2: To be like professional Jess, real assertive part of any
- 6:47Speaker 2: of our clients listening to this, it can be like
- 6:49Speaker 2: Jess a doormat.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Oh nah.
- 6:52Speaker 2: But like when you said personal life, I was like, oh,
- 6:55Speaker 2: that makes sense because professional me and personal me they're
- 6:58Speaker 2: different people. So that makes it sends for you as well. Yeah,
- 7:01Speaker 2: and I want to apply it across the board.
- 7:03Speaker 4: It's not just socially, but I think that really focusing
- 7:06Speaker 4: on being confident in what I believe in or confident
- 7:09Speaker 4: in what I think is right and wrong, and not
- 7:11Speaker 4: necessarily defaulting to agreeing with people because it's the easy option.
- 7:15Speaker 4: I do not like conflict, and more often than not,
- 7:17Speaker 4: I find myself playing the peacekeeping role. And while there's
- 7:20Speaker 4: definitely something to be said for that, because I'm sure
- 7:21Speaker 4: a lot of people are listening to me saying this,
- 7:23Speaker 4: being like I'm a peacekeeper, Like I feel like that's
- 7:25Speaker 4: a good thing, and it absolutely is. I can be
- 7:28Speaker 4: it can be for sure. I think it's gotten to
- 7:30Speaker 4: a point though, where I'm not making choices or I'm
- 7:34Speaker 4: not doing things that would make me happiest because I'm
- 7:36Speaker 4: trying to avoid conflict. And so, just like everybody else,
- 7:39Speaker 4: I know that my thoughts in my opinions are valid,
- 7:42Speaker 4: and I think that they're good a lot of the time,
- 7:44Speaker 4: and I just want to be more confident and comfortable
- 7:46Speaker 4: sharing those with people in like all different settings.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I totally agree with that. And as much as you say, oh,
- 7:52Speaker 2: it can be good, it's actually a really big emotional
- 7:55Speaker 2: burden to carry to be the one that's always trying
- 7:57Speaker 2: to keep peace with everybody else, because it's like you're
- 8:00Speaker 2: trying to take both sides of the story and weigh
- 8:02Speaker 2: on that and carry that and feel as though maybe
- 8:04Speaker 2: that's Yeah, I just feel like that's a really big
- 8:07Speaker 2: burden to carry and it's not actually your responsibility. But
- 8:10Speaker 2: today we're going to actually put a thread in our
- 8:12Speaker 2: Facebook group because I actually want to hear exactly what
- 8:15Speaker 2: you guys are up to and what your intentions are
- 8:18Speaker 2: and what you're picking and what you maybe have picked before,
- 8:20Speaker 2: and like maybe if you're a little bit stumped, maybe
- 8:23Speaker 2: put some comments in there that are like, oh my gosh,
- 8:26Speaker 2: So I can't really pick a word, but these are
- 8:27Speaker 2: the types of things that I want to go for,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and we can all help each other find our intention
- 8:32Speaker 2: words for this year. I'm looking forward to picking next
- 8:34Speaker 2: year's year from this list, just like screenshot and save
- 8:38Speaker 2: them so that we don't have to do the hard
- 8:39Speaker 2: work next year. I think that's really clear.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Let's get into setting intentions for the year, because I
- 8:44Speaker 4: feel like not everybody wants to necessarily set a goal
- 8:47Speaker 4: it might feel a little bit overwhelming, where intentions are
- 8:50Speaker 4: a little bit easier to approach.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Where can we begin with that? All right, So first
- 8:54Speaker 2: let's define what an intention is, because it's something that
- 8:57Speaker 2: I feel like a lot of our community engage with
- 9:00Speaker 2: without realizing. It's kind of like a little bit subconscious,
- 9:03Speaker 2: but we can actually be really intentional with our intentions.
- 9:07Speaker 2: So essentially, an intention, JESS is more of a like
- 9:10Speaker 2: how to for making your life better, for making your
- 9:13Speaker 2: life the way you want it to be. For being
- 9:15Speaker 2: in a mindset more consistently that you enjoy and to
- 9:19Speaker 2: keep yourself accountable for that process. So while a resolution,
- 9:23Speaker 2: I feel like at the start of this year, everyone's
- 9:25Speaker 2: been talking about New Year and num like, let's set
- 9:27Speaker 2: resolutions for the new year. I'm not gonna. I am
- 9:29Speaker 2: gonna like. I just feel like that tethers you to
- 9:32Speaker 2: the future with absolutely no clear path forward. That it
- 9:36Speaker 2: puts you on a trajectory where you're like, I am
- 9:38Speaker 2: going to go to the gym every day, Like, okay, great.
- 9:41Speaker 2: If we change that from a resolution to more of
- 9:43Speaker 2: an intention, you could say, I want to be more healthy.
- 9:47Speaker 2: I want to make healthier decisions this year. So even
- 9:51Speaker 2: if you don't go to the gym every day, we
- 9:53Speaker 2: haven't failed that quote goal. We haven't failed that intention.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So I think it's more about, well, why do you
- 9:58Speaker 2: want to go to the gym every day day? And
- 10:00Speaker 2: as you know, she's on the money, we're all about
- 10:02Speaker 2: the deep lying issue rather than just like surface level things.
- 10:06Speaker 2: I want you to dig a little bit deeper. And
- 10:07Speaker 2: you know, I use gym as a good example because
- 10:10Speaker 2: I feel like it's the most stereotypical one. I don't
- 10:12Speaker 2: think people should go to the gym every dayes you
- 10:14Speaker 2: can jump literally in any type of lake if you
- 10:16Speaker 2: think that I am going to ever be the type
- 10:18Speaker 2: of person that does that. But I have been guilty
- 10:21Speaker 2: historically of setting a goal like that because I think
- 10:24Speaker 2: that's what's going to create me into this person that
- 10:26Speaker 2: I want to become, when in reality, I just want
- 10:29Speaker 2: to be a little bit more holistic. I want to
- 10:31Speaker 2: be a little bit healthier, and I want to consistently
- 10:33Speaker 2: make healthier decisions. So from my perspective, I think that
- 10:37Speaker 2: by setting an intention, you're taking the pressure off yourself
- 10:41Speaker 2: as opposed to a resolution that I think is quite bound.
- 10:44Speaker 2: So for me, I think that this is less black
- 10:46Speaker 2: and white, less do or die, and more Hey, this
- 10:50Speaker 2: is like the flow of where I would like to go,
- 10:52Speaker 2: and I can make decisions along the way that aligned
- 10:55Speaker 2: to that, because sometimes you just need to stay in
- 10:58Speaker 2: bed and you need to look after yourself, and you
- 11:00Speaker 2: might go oh far out, Like my intention was to
- 11:03Speaker 2: make healthier decisions. Oh, I'm feeling pretty flat today. The
- 11:06Speaker 2: healthy decision here is to give myself more rest. Whereas
- 11:10Speaker 2: if you had chosen to go to the gym every
- 11:12Speaker 2: single day and that was your resolution that might not
- 11:14Speaker 2: actually be the best holistic decision for you. All right,
- 11:17Speaker 2: sounds incredible. Sign me up, I'm ready to go.
- 11:20Speaker 4: How do I even begin about figuring out what intention
- 11:23Speaker 4: they want to set?
- 11:24Speaker 2: I feel like you've already done it. You've set your intention,
- 11:26Speaker 2: you've set your goal word. You'd be all over this.
- 11:28Speaker 2: But what I come equipped with that you didn't come
- 11:30Speaker 2: equipped with today, Jess is a laundry list. I love
- 11:33Speaker 2: a list. We love lists, not so much laundry. But
- 11:36Speaker 2: I think it's important to actually start working out. Let's
- 11:40Speaker 2: ma recondo this a little bit. We did an episode
- 11:42Speaker 2: a little while ago or maricondoing your Finances, which I'd
- 11:45Speaker 2: recommend going back to. But find what sparks joy, Find
- 11:50Speaker 2: the things that make you really happy. Have you heard
- 11:53Speaker 2: of the law of attraction? Yes, it says that by
- 11:56Speaker 2: focusing on the things that spark joy, you attract more
- 11:59Speaker 2: of it. So if we focus on the things that
- 12:01Speaker 2: we are really excited about, more of them are going
- 12:04Speaker 2: to happen, and you're going to bring more positive experience
- 12:07Speaker 2: into your life and actually put yourself in a better position.
- 12:11Speaker 2: And my favorite example of this is really lame. Are
- 12:15Speaker 2: you ready? My favorite analogy of this is actually an
- 12:18Speaker 2: inside joke that I'm going to share with you guys
- 12:20Speaker 2: that I have with a Milinadi who you guys might
- 12:22Speaker 2: know from the Property Playbook with Jazz, and it's a
- 12:26Speaker 2: yellow Honda Jazz, very specific, it is, right, but they're
- 12:31Speaker 2: like niche cars, right, Like when have you seen or
- 12:33Speaker 2: you would have seen a bright yellow Honda Jazz, but
- 12:37Speaker 2: they are so much more common when you're looking for them.
- 12:41Speaker 2: And Amy and I have this entire text message thread
- 12:45Speaker 2: of me taking a photo of every single Honda Jazz
- 12:47Speaker 2: that is yellow that I see and her doing the same,
- 12:50Speaker 2: and it's just like we might not have talked for
- 12:51Speaker 2: a few days, but then I'll send her a picture
- 12:53Speaker 2: of a Honda Jazz and she'd be like, what a beast?
- 12:56Speaker 2: That is a nice car because I just don't understand
- 12:59Speaker 2: that color. Do you want to be a mini taxi?
- 13:01Speaker 2: Like I don't. I don't get it, but it is
- 13:04Speaker 2: a car that before we started this little trend together,
- 13:08Speaker 2: I was like, they're never around, like I've I've ever
- 13:11Speaker 2: seen one? You have? You actually have? You just haven't
- 13:15Speaker 2: noticed it. And the reason I'm giving you this analogy
- 13:18Speaker 2: is because now Jess you're going to go home, You're
- 13:20Speaker 2: probably going to drive past one. You'd be like, oh,
- 13:22Speaker 2: yellow Honda Jazz. But the important thing about that is
- 13:25Speaker 2: actually law of attraction. You are looking for it and
- 13:29Speaker 2: you find what you are looking for. It's kind of like,
- 13:31Speaker 2: you know how you talk about manifestation a lot, and
- 13:34Speaker 2: this is really aligned to you know, something that you're about.
- 13:37Speaker 2: It's kind of like, if you're looking for something, you're
- 13:40Speaker 2: more likely to manifest it. And I guess that's where
- 13:43Speaker 2: the law of attraction kind of comes from, because you're
- 13:45Speaker 2: trying to attract something, and it's so much easier to
- 13:47Speaker 2: attract something you can see or something you're fully looking for.
- 13:50Speaker 2: It's kind of like when you go to the pantry
- 13:53Speaker 2: and you're looking for a snack but you're not really
- 13:55Speaker 2: sure what you want and how it works, you're probably
- 13:57Speaker 2: likely to not notice something that you would have been
- 14:00Speaker 2: interested in. And then later I'm on the couch with
- 14:02Speaker 2: Steve and he walks in with a packet of tim
- 14:04Speaker 2: Times or something. I'm like, what the hell, where'd you
- 14:06Speaker 2: get that from? He says, Oh, they were just in
- 14:07Speaker 2: the pantry. I didn't see them because I wasn't looking
- 14:11Speaker 2: for them. Specifically. So I think if you work out
- 14:14Speaker 2: what brings you joy and happiness and what gives you purpose, honestly,
- 14:19Speaker 2: you're going to be able to bring more of that
- 14:22Speaker 2: into your life and spark more of that joy more
- 14:24Speaker 2: consistently because you're actually really clear on what you're looking for.
- 14:28Speaker 2: So whether that is in your relationships or in your workplace,
- 14:31Speaker 2: or it is a dress that you really really want,
- 14:34Speaker 2: you're more likely to find it if that's what you're
- 14:37Speaker 2: looking for. So I think it's really about not just saying, oh,
- 14:41Speaker 2: here's this goal. It's like, well, what do I like?
- 14:44Speaker 2: Do I really like being healthy?
- 14:45Speaker 1: Oh?
- 14:46Speaker 2: I'm more likely to see healthy options. Do I really
- 14:49Speaker 2: want better friends? You're more likely to see traits in
- 14:52Speaker 2: people that you're really attracted to. So I think it's
- 14:55Speaker 2: about actually finding those things being aware of them. So
- 14:59Speaker 2: when we start looking like we're looking for yellow Honda
- 15:02Speaker 2: jazz is, honestly start blowing up my inbox with the
- 15:04Speaker 2: yellow Honda Jazz. I promise they are everywhere. Also, really
- 15:07Speaker 2: sorry if you drive a Honda Jazz and people start
- 15:10Speaker 2: taking photos of your car and you're a bit confused,
- 15:12Speaker 2: because that's me.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Yeah, that's why I really like mood boards is because
- 15:15Speaker 4: I feel like when you can visually see something, it's
- 15:18Speaker 4: like that reminder of like what you want. And I
- 15:21Speaker 4: feel like unless you want a specific item, like if
- 15:23Speaker 4: you want a schnellbag, like that's on my mood board
- 15:25Speaker 4: and you had Paris on your mood board last year,
- 15:27Speaker 4: and we will yeah, and we went. But it's one
- 15:30Speaker 4: of those things that if it's visual, you're more likely
- 15:33Speaker 4: to achieve it. And it's not true like I don't know,
- 15:36Speaker 4: I'm a bit of a manifestation skeptic.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I'm all about it. But the reason I'm all about
- 15:41Speaker 2: manifestation is because I genuinely believe that if you start
- 15:44Speaker 2: looking for something, you will find it.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Yeah, and that can be more abstract in concept as well.
- 15:48Speaker 4: It's kind of where I was going with that, because
- 15:50Speaker 4: you might not be able to find a photo of
- 15:51Speaker 4: wanting to be kinder, like how do you sum that
- 15:54Speaker 4: up in a photo? But I think if you build
- 15:56Speaker 4: out that life that you want and those things, and
- 15:59Speaker 4: maybe something reminds you have kindness or reminds you of
- 16:01Speaker 4: balance or whatever.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Can we do a mood board workshop. Oh my gosh,
- 16:04Speaker 2: that would be so cool. I don't know if she's
- 16:06Speaker 2: on the money. People want to do it, but I
- 16:07Speaker 2: want to do it with the team, and I think
- 16:09Speaker 2: that you're right. It's hard to visualize that, but you
- 16:11Speaker 2: can put words on your mood board, like you've got
- 16:13Speaker 2: words on your mood board. Last year you had the
- 16:14Speaker 2: word growth on your mood board, and I feel like
- 16:17Speaker 2: you could write it in a cool, fond stick it
- 16:19Speaker 2: front of mind, like kind great, chuck that on your
- 16:22Speaker 2: mood board, like a picture of someone laughing and being happy.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Maybe that's what you're looking for. But yeah, I know, like,
- 16:28Speaker 2: let's talk about this after the episode. I want to
- 16:29Speaker 2: do a mood board sash. Oh my gosh, sounds fun.
- 16:32Speaker 4: What is the second thing that we can do to
- 16:33Speaker 4: help us on our road to setting great intentions?
- 16:35Speaker 2: All right, so again I'm a little bit fluffy. We're
- 16:40Speaker 2: going to set a mantra, Jess. So I am very
- 16:44Speaker 2: big in the space of positive affirmations and what you
- 16:48Speaker 2: tell yourself you become. So if you think you are awful,
- 16:52Speaker 2: and your internal narrative is always that you are awful,
- 16:55Speaker 2: you are always going to feel awful. But if we
- 16:57Speaker 2: start coming up with mantras that are aligned to the
- 17:02Speaker 2: goal that we are setting you are more likely to
- 17:04Speaker 2: achieve that goal. So we want to make sure that
- 17:07Speaker 2: our mantra isn't just like a random one that just
- 17:09Speaker 2: sounds good. It's actually a mantra that you can say
- 17:12Speaker 2: either when you're meditating in the mornings or taking five
- 17:16Speaker 2: minutes or I do them when I'm curling my hair
- 17:19Speaker 2: because I have to use both hands and so therefore
- 17:21Speaker 2: can't play on my phone, caun't or anything else. Have
- 17:23Speaker 2: a whole heap of time with myself that I need
- 17:25Speaker 2: to use. But it's basically a daily self care practice
- 17:30Speaker 2: that I, you know, put into force to remind myself,
- 17:34Speaker 2: like I am happy, I'm healthy, I am kind and
- 17:36Speaker 2: those are the things that I want to be consistently,
- 17:39Speaker 2: and I want to remind myself of that, like I
- 17:41Speaker 2: am so grateful that I have a body that works
- 17:44Speaker 2: for me. And these things come from my history with eating,
- 17:48Speaker 2: my history with not being the kindest to myself, with
- 17:52Speaker 2: not being the person that I want to show up with.
- 17:55Speaker 2: I think that we can set mantras that become the reality.
- 17:59Speaker 2: So in my financial mantra, it could be a mantra
- 18:02Speaker 2: that is, I am great at budgeting, I am great
- 18:05Speaker 2: at finance, I am great at setting goals, and even
- 18:09Speaker 2: if you're not, you can start. If you tell yourself
- 18:12Speaker 2: enough times, you'll become that because you'll start believing that.
- 18:15Speaker 2: So if you can consistently remind yourself and your body
- 18:18Speaker 2: that you are good at something, you can actually change
- 18:21Speaker 2: your entire perception around what that looks like. Even if
- 18:23Speaker 2: historically you've not been good at budgeting, even if historically
- 18:26Speaker 2: you've never actually reached a savings goal like you keep
- 18:30Speaker 2: it front of mind and it absolutely will happen.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Well.
- 18:33Speaker 4: On that note, I would like everybody to know that
- 18:35Speaker 4: I am really wealthy, because that's what I would like
- 18:38Speaker 4: to attract into my YEAH this year.
- 18:40Speaker 2: But I love that though, but everyone can do that.
- 18:42Speaker 2: I'm healthy, wealthy, and kind incredible.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Let's go to a really quick break because when we
- 18:47Speaker 4: come back, I want to hear more about how I
- 18:49Speaker 4: make my dream life a reality. You don't go anywhere.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Welcome back everybody. Today we are talking all about setting
- 18:58Speaker 4: intentions for.
- 18:59Speaker 2: The new Yeah. Because I feel like we've all got
- 19:01Speaker 2: that positive vibe right now. New Yeah knew me.
- 19:04Speaker 4: I'm ready for it to be a good one. In
- 19:06Speaker 4: twenty twenty three, nothing's going to stand in my way, Victoria,
- 19:10Speaker 4: what is the next step I can take to make
- 19:11Speaker 4: that happen.
- 19:12Speaker 2: We are going to be so wildly optimistic that it
- 19:16Speaker 2: will make you sick. I love it. I'm probably not.
- 19:18Speaker 2: You won't love that, but that's all right. But we
- 19:20Speaker 2: are going to be optimistic. We are going to be
- 19:22Speaker 2: positive because too many times we keep telling ourselves that
- 19:25Speaker 2: they're I don't want to do this, I don't need
- 19:28Speaker 2: to do this, or like, oh I have to do this.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Like we get into this negative mind frame where I
- 19:34Speaker 2: just want to be healthier. Oh I have to eat
- 19:36Speaker 2: a healthy meal. No, baby, you get to eat a
- 19:39Speaker 2: healthy meal. We are going to change the narrative around
- 19:43Speaker 2: the stories that we tell ourselves to make them more positive.
- 19:46Speaker 2: And it would be crazy how many times a day
- 19:49Speaker 2: you talk to yourself in a negative way without noticing it.
- 19:52Speaker 2: So it's not oh I don't want to do that.
- 19:55Speaker 2: It's not aligned to my goals right now. So friend
- 19:58Speaker 2: invites you out and you're like, oh, I don't really
- 20:00Speaker 2: want to do that. No, no, no, it's not aligned
- 20:02Speaker 2: to my goals. It's not aligned to my values, or
- 20:04Speaker 2: it's not aligned to my budget. It's not a negative thing.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Not I don't want to, which can innately feel very
- 20:10Speaker 2: very negative. Instead of saying that you're not going to
- 20:13Speaker 2: live in fear, you'll just be like, I'm going to
- 20:15Speaker 2: trust things more freely this year. So changing the narrative
- 20:19Speaker 2: around the way we speak to ourselves is really important.
- 20:22Speaker 2: But it's also one of those things that it will
- 20:25Speaker 2: put you back in control and you are far more
- 20:27Speaker 2: likely to achieve far more things. Because I hate that
- 20:31Speaker 2: I do this so often, and the thing that I
- 20:33Speaker 2: do so often that I don't like is compare budgeting
- 20:36Speaker 2: with diets. But I feel like it's really relatable.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Jess.
- 20:40Speaker 2: If you ever put yourself on a diet once or twice, yeah,
- 20:43Speaker 2: I'm really good at it. I'm not proud of that,
- 20:45Speaker 2: but I used to do it all the time. The
- 20:48Speaker 2: first thing that you do when you put yourself on
- 20:50Speaker 2: a diet is like, oh, I can't have that. Why
- 20:51Speaker 2: do we focus on what we can't have as opposed
- 20:53Speaker 2: to what we can have instead of focusing on the
- 20:56Speaker 2: things that are being taken away from us When we're
- 20:59Speaker 2: setting a budget, why aren't we focusing on the big
- 21:02Speaker 2: goal of like, oh my gosh, I've just taken coffee
- 21:04Speaker 2: off myself. I can't have a coffee. I'm budgeting. That's negative.
- 21:08Speaker 2: That's not just saying something negative. It's making you feel
- 21:12Speaker 2: like you are suffering from the decision that you have made.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Instead of going like, oh, I'm not gonna do that
- 21:18Speaker 2: because I am saving for a car, a house, I
- 21:21Speaker 2: am saving my emergency fund, I'm doing something far greater.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It's not I can't do that or I don't get
- 21:28Speaker 2: to do that. It's like I get to do something different,
- 21:31Speaker 2: I get to put myself in a different position. So
- 21:33Speaker 2: I think it's really around changing our mindset from always
- 21:37Speaker 2: immediately being negative. And I guess this is why when
- 21:41Speaker 2: we talk about diets it makes a little bit more
- 21:43Speaker 2: sense because the second you tell me, Victoria, you have
- 21:46Speaker 2: to go on a diet, I'll be like, so you
- 21:47Speaker 2: can't cant eat macas chips, I can't have coke. I've
- 21:50Speaker 2: gotta have tight coke, do you know what I mean? Like,
- 21:52Speaker 2: you start thinking about the things that aren't really able
- 21:56Speaker 2: to be oxcessed right now, instead of being like, oh, well,
- 21:58Speaker 2: what can I have? What are the delicious options that
- 22:01Speaker 2: you know really align with my values so that you
- 22:03Speaker 2: could be excited about it. So keeping positive and keeping
- 22:07Speaker 2: optimistic is actually going to mean that you're one again
- 22:10Speaker 2: more likely to achieve this goal. But how much healthier
- 22:14Speaker 2: are you all going to be if we start really
- 22:15Speaker 2: focusing on the positive instead of focusing on what we're
- 22:18Speaker 2: missing out on.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like I have to as a like
- 22:20Speaker 4: nice little byproduct would make you just feel good, because
- 22:24Speaker 4: like feeling sad or like you're missing out on something
- 22:27Speaker 4: just isn't a good feeling in general, so as switching
- 22:30Speaker 4: that mindset might have a nice little flow on impact
- 22:33Speaker 4: of making you feel just better in general as well,
- 22:35Speaker 4: which is nice.
- 22:36Speaker 2: And I feel like there's this underlying narrative of this
- 22:39Speaker 2: episode that is kind of about positive self talk and
- 22:41Speaker 2: actually putting yourself in the best possible position by starting
- 22:44Speaker 2: with yourself. And that's not an accident. That's absolutely something
- 22:48Speaker 2: that I truly believe in, and it's really about starting
- 22:51Speaker 2: with yourself. I saw an Instagram quote the other day,
- 22:54Speaker 2: and obviously Instagram quotes the most legitimate jess and it
- 22:57Speaker 2: said try saying nothing negative about yourself for one day,
- 23:00Speaker 2: and then one week, and then one month and then
- 23:02Speaker 2: one year. And I feel like that was a really
- 23:04Speaker 2: good quote that resonated with me because you can't immediately
- 23:08Speaker 2: just not be a negative person. And I'm not saying
- 23:09Speaker 2: that everybody in our community is a negative person, but
- 23:12Speaker 2: I'm guilty of this too. Instead of focusing on a
- 23:14Speaker 2: part of my body or a part of me that
- 23:16Speaker 2: I don't particularly like, I should really focus on the
- 23:19Speaker 2: things that I am grateful for, Like I am happy,
- 23:21Speaker 2: I am healthy, Like I am in a very privileged
- 23:24Speaker 2: position at this point in my life, and I think
- 23:26Speaker 2: that I need to focus on those things instead of
- 23:29Speaker 2: always highlighting the negative things about myself. And we can
- 23:32Speaker 2: all do that, we can all shift our mindset. But
- 23:35Speaker 2: the more positive you are, what's your life change? Literally
- 23:39Speaker 2: from day one to one week, to one month to
- 23:42Speaker 2: one year, like your entire life will shift, and you
- 23:45Speaker 2: will become that glowy, happy person that everyone gravitates towards
- 23:49Speaker 2: because they can't help, but wonder, like, how is just
- 23:52Speaker 2: just so happy and healthy and glowy and accepting? Honestly,
- 23:56Speaker 2: It'll change your life. Oh my god, that sounds like
- 23:59Speaker 2: the dream. Sign me up for that one hundred percent.
- 24:01Speaker 2: I believe you might have one more thing on your
- 24:03Speaker 2: cheeky little laundry list for me, I do there is
- 24:06Speaker 2: one more hot tip you're gonna like this one. It's
- 24:09Speaker 2: recruit your friends. I'm not going to do this on
- 24:12Speaker 2: my own. I'm not gonna be positive well negative Nancy
- 24:16Speaker 2: across the tables. Being negative Nancy. That makes my life
- 24:19Speaker 2: way too hard. And I am in a position where
- 24:21Speaker 2: I want everything to be as easy as possible. I
- 24:23Speaker 2: want to be positive, but I also want to share
- 24:25Speaker 2: it with friends, and I feel like it's a really
- 24:28Speaker 2: good piece of reflection. Time to go, all right? Do
- 24:32Speaker 2: I have friends that support me? Do I have friends
- 24:34Speaker 2: that support my financial goals and my life goals? If
- 24:37Speaker 2: I'm planning on saving for a car, like why don't
- 24:39Speaker 2: I share that with my friends? If I'm saving up
- 24:41Speaker 2: for my emergency funds, like Jess. I know if I
- 24:44Speaker 2: said to you, oh, I'm gonna save my emergency you'd
- 24:47Speaker 2: be like, yeah, queen, let's do it. What's your plan?
- 24:49Speaker 2: What's your goal? How do we do this? You know,
- 24:51Speaker 2: come to my place, I'll make you a hot chocky
- 24:53Speaker 2: and we'll make a plan for it. Like I want
- 24:55Speaker 2: that type of friend in my life. I don't want
- 24:57Speaker 2: that type of friend that's like, oh, so does this
- 24:59Speaker 2: mean you can't go out for breakfast next? Saturday. Oh
- 25:01Speaker 2: the worst, literally the worst, Like I don't want that
- 25:03Speaker 2: negativity in my life. So not only are we sharing
- 25:07Speaker 2: things because if we share our accountabilities, it's more likely
- 25:10Speaker 2: that we're going to be held accountable, but also can
- 25:13Speaker 2: we find friends or mentors that are gonna have our
- 25:15Speaker 2: backs during this process? Like I know I'm not the
- 25:18Speaker 2: only one that has negative self talk? So Jess, why
- 25:21Speaker 2: don't you and I go all right, if I hear
- 25:23Speaker 2: you say one negative thing about you, I'm gonna slap
- 25:26Speaker 2: you silly and tell you to stop doing that. Does
- 25:29Speaker 2: that make sense? I think that we need to keep
- 25:30Speaker 2: ourselves accountable but also question it, and I think that
- 25:33Speaker 2: you need to actually give someone permission to do that. Right,
- 25:36Speaker 2: So if I said, Jess, I'm trying to save this year.
- 25:38Speaker 2: I want to save ten thousand dollars, Like, oh, I'm
- 25:41Speaker 2: finding it really hard. Can you help keep me accountable? Well,
- 25:44Speaker 2: that's you giving that person permission to kind of question you, like, Oh, Jess,
- 25:49Speaker 2: like I know that we did XYZ and you know
- 25:51Speaker 2: we've got this party coming up? Like do you really
- 25:53Speaker 2: need the new dress? Oh no, I don't. Like, let's
- 25:55Speaker 2: have a chat about staying accountable. But if I hadn't
- 25:58Speaker 2: been given permission to do that. Kind of inappropriate of
- 26:01Speaker 2: my friend to be like questioning your purchase here. Yeah,
- 26:05Speaker 2: like that's really weird. Yeah, it's a bit weird and
- 26:07Speaker 2: it's a bit rude, and it's none of their business.
- 26:09Speaker 2: But if I said to you, Jess, oh, I'm really
- 26:11Speaker 2: really trying, can you please help me stay accountable, I'm
- 26:14Speaker 2: alright with you giving me the feedback, and I might
- 26:16Speaker 2: be like, oh, yes, I budgeted for this, don't worry,
- 26:18Speaker 2: and you could be like, great, no worries, or it
- 26:20Speaker 2: might be a little bit of a reflection to remind
- 26:23Speaker 2: me of my bigger goal that I'm way more excited
- 26:26Speaker 2: about the new new dress for the weekend. Yeah. I
- 26:28Speaker 2: really like that.
- 26:29Speaker 4: I feel like there's strength in numbers, and especially if
- 26:32Speaker 4: you have a friend who's wanting to do the same thing,
- 26:33Speaker 4: you can help each other out and keep each other accountable,
- 26:36Speaker 4: and it's just a really nice way to do things
- 26:38Speaker 4: when you're not doing them alone.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I love it. Last point before we go, because I
- 26:42Speaker 2: know we're trying to wrap it up, is let's go.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Let's do it. We mentioned earlier this episode that we're
- 26:47Speaker 2: going to put a thread in a Facebook group about
- 26:49Speaker 2: setting your word for the year. Let's talk about intentions.
- 26:52Speaker 2: I want to know yours. I want to know your
- 26:54Speaker 2: word of the year because maybe it's better than mine
- 26:56Speaker 2: and I should swap. But I really want to start
- 26:58Speaker 2: this conversation because off and we struggle with this step
- 27:01Speaker 2: and often we struggle with finding our niche and finding
- 27:04Speaker 2: our group of people that are going to really support us.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Jess It's guaranteed She's on the Money community is going
- 27:09Speaker 2: to support you.
- 27:09Speaker 4: So share it there absolutely, And if you're not in
- 27:12Speaker 4: that Facebook group, please come and join us as over
- 27:14Speaker 4: two hundred and what is its sixty thousand people joking
- 27:18Speaker 4: search She's on the Money to find us. And if
- 27:19Speaker 4: Facebook's not your thing, we're on Instagram as well, where
- 27:21Speaker 4: it's She's on the Money aus. If you enjoyed the episode,
- 27:25Speaker 4: we would so appreciate it if you would leave us
- 27:27Speaker 4: a review. We would love to kick the year off
- 27:29Speaker 4: with some nice, little positive affirmations of our own and
- 27:31Speaker 4: that seems like a fun way to do it.
- 27:33Speaker 2: But I add a ten idea, Jessica, thank you so much.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Should we get out all off? Yeah, let's go set
- 27:38Speaker 2: our intentions? Bye? Guys, did buy shared? On She's on
