- You know that heavy, sinking feeling in your chest when you see a new project land in your inbox? The one that screams 'urgent' but whispers 'disaster'? Let’s get real for a second. We need to talk about the physical sensation of saying yes when you desperately want to say no. I want you to close your eyes if you can, just for a moment, and remember the last time you agreed to something that had nothing to do with your actual job description, and everything to do with someone else’s urgency. Can you feel it? That tightness right behind your ribs? That low-grade hum of resentment that starts before the meeting even begins? It’s not just stress. It’s your spirit leaking out of you, drop by drop, until you’re wondering where all your energy went. I used to think this was the price of admission for leadership. I thought that if I wasn’t the one carrying the extra load, I wasn’t being a team player. I was wrong. And I’m going to tell you exactly why, because I’ve lived through the burnout that comes from trying to be everything to everyone. We live in a culture that confuses availability with value. If you’re always there, always responding, always taking on the shiny new initiative, people assume you have infinite capacity. But you don’t. None of us do. When you say yes to every request, you aren’t helping your organization; you’re actually harming it. You’re spreading yourself so thin that the quality of your core work suffers. You become a generalist in a world that needs specialists. And worse, you start to resent the very people you’re trying to help. That resentment is toxic. It poisons your relationships with your colleagues and it poisons your relationship with yourself. You stop trusting your own judgment because you keep ignoring your own limits. So, what’s the cost of that silence? The cost is your authenticity. You become a mirror reflecting everyone else’s needs, while your own reflection becomes blurry and distant. Not all projects are created equal, and not all yeses are made for the same reason. Some yeses are strategic investments. They align with your long-term goals, they build skills you want, or they open doors you genuinely want to walk through. Those are good yeses. But then there are the drainers. These are the projects that ask for your time but give nothing back but exhaustion. They might be administrative black holes, political landmines, or tasks that play directly into your insecurities. I learned to identify these early on, after I walked away from my corner office at a Fortune 500 company. I realized I was spending eighty percent of my energy on twenty percent of my impact. I was busy, yes. But I wasn’t effective. I wasn’t alive. You need to audit your commitments. Look at your calendar and your task list with cold, hard eyes. Which items make you feel light and engaged? Which ones make you feel heavy and drained? Be honest. Don’t lie to yourself because you’re afraid of looking lazy. Laziness is resting. Burnout is suffering. Know the difference. Saying no isn’t about being difficult. It’s about being discerning. It’s about protecting your focus so you can deliver excellence where it matters most. But I know it feels scary. What if they think I’m not a team player? What if I miss an opportunity? Here’s the truth: the right people will respect your boundaries. The people who only value you for your compliance will fall away, and that is a gift. When you say no, you are saying yes to your priorities. You are saying yes to your mental health. You are saying yes to the work that actually moves the needle. You don’t have to do it all at once. In fact, you shouldn’t. Try starting small. Next time a request comes in that doesn’t align with your core mission, pause. Don’t answer immediately. Say, 'Let me check my capacity and get back to you.' That pause gives you space to think. It gives you power. It shifts the dynamic from reactive to intentional. When you do decide to say no, how you say it matters. You don’t need to over-explain. You don’t need to apologize profusely. A simple, confident decline is more professional than a hesitant, apologetic yes. Try this: 'I can’t take this on right now without compromising the quality of my current priorities.' Or, 'This isn’t the best use of my skills right now, but I think Sarah might be great for it.' You are offering a solution, not just a rejection. You are showing that you care about the outcome, not just your own comfort. This builds trust. It shows you’re thinking strategically about the team’s success, not just your own convenience. It’s not selfish to protect your energy. It’s responsible. You are the CEO of your own career, and you have to manage your resources wisely. If you run out of fuel, the car doesn’t go anywhere. Neither does your career. I won’t lie to you—saying no feels uncomfortable at first. Your nervous system might revolt. You might feel a spike of anxiety, a fear of abandonment or conflict. That’s normal. It means you’re breaking a pattern. But stay with it. Sit with the discomfort. Notice that nothing terrible happens. The world doesn’t end. Your boss doesn’t fire you. In fact, often, they look at you with more respect. They see someone who knows their worth. Someone who has standards. This is where true authority comes from. Not from shouting, as we discussed in a previous episode, but from grounded presence. From knowing what you stand for. When you consistently protect your energy, you signal to others that your time is valuable. And when they value your time, they value your output. It’s a cycle. A positive one. Start building it today. Pick one thing. Just one. And let it go. You are allowed to protect your peace. You are allowed to say no. And you are allowed to thrive. I’ll be here next week, ready to dig deeper. Until then, breathe easy. You’ve got this.
