- 0:29Speaker 1: our youth, our teenage years, just whenever we felt comforted
- 0:34Speaker 1: by a movie and then we felt like we should
- 0:37Speaker 1: revisit it to make sure we could still feel comfortable
- 0:39Speaker 1: about it. Enjoy this audio version of Still Comfy if
- 0:44Speaker 1: you would like to see the video version. I have

- 1:33Speaker 1: tolerated before. Hello, Hello, children in Oh are you so
- 2:03Speaker 1: cozy and comfy? For tonight's movie. Oh, now it's getting weird.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Now it's like weird, weird.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah, why you'd make it weird?
- 2:12Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:15Speaker 3: I can't hang. I gotta go. It was really cool.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It was almost on right up until it became like
- 2:21Speaker 1: a boo from the Simpsons and I was like, nope,
- 2:24Speaker 1: gotta gotta jump.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I can't.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I never said I was Robin Williams.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Nobody said that either.
- 2:35Speaker 1: No one ever said I was.
- 2:37Speaker 2: There's only one Hi, Welcome, it's your channel.
- 2:45Speaker 1: You have to do the intro. I know, I did
- 2:47Speaker 1: the funny bit. I did the funny bit, and then
- 2:49Speaker 1: you do the really intro.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I know, friends, Welcome to still come Tuesday. I am
- 2:54Speaker 3: so emotional.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I just finished Britney Spears memoir, so it's gonna be
- 2:58Speaker 2: a lot. I apologize that I can't compartmentalize enough to
- 3:03Speaker 2: continue on the rest of my day.
- 3:06Speaker 3: But we are here today. We are gathered here today.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I am Julia Washington, the host of pop culture makes
- 3:12Speaker 2: me jealous, where we analyze pop culture through the lens
- 3:16Speaker 2: of race or gender, and sometimes both.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I'm joined by my co host.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'm Natalie fired Out, the host and producer of the
- 3:25Speaker 1: podcast to all the men I've tolerated before, internationally renowned
- 3:30Speaker 1: podcast and look at weekly look at everyday misogyny. I
- 3:36Speaker 1: would be putting my info in the chat, except for
- 3:39Speaker 1: our third party streaming platform logged me out, and therefore
- 3:43Speaker 1: if I try to join the chat now, it will
- 3:46Speaker 1: kick me out of the show. So we're just doing this.
- 3:51Speaker 2: So apparently they're also having a hard time with the
- 3:53Speaker 2: revelations in Brittany's memoirs.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Honestly, we're all just having hard times, sang well.
- 4:00Speaker 2: We are here today to talk about the nineteen ninety
- 4:04Speaker 2: one Robin Williams classic starring Sally Field, Fields Fields, Matthew Lawrence,
- 4:14Speaker 2: Matilda and.
- 4:16Speaker 3: The older sister I forgot her name.
- 4:19Speaker 1: It's Maria, It's Maura something, Mara something, It's fine. Pierce Brosnan,
- 4:27Speaker 1: Pierre Sprosnan is also in this movie.
- 4:29Speaker 2: And Hattie Pierce Brosnan fresh off of the Remington Steel
- 4:34Speaker 2: And it's been thirty years since thirty two years since
- 4:40Speaker 2: this movie has been released and was widely received. So
- 4:49Speaker 2: I don't even know where to begin. It's over two
- 4:52Speaker 2: hours long, and I love this movie and I watch
- 4:56Speaker 2: it all like I put it.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I didn't, Okay, so here's the thing.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Badly, I put the movie on, and normally I put
- 5:02Speaker 2: the movie on and then it puts around the house
- 5:04Speaker 2: because it's just one and I pay attention to what
- 5:07Speaker 2: I want to pay attention to. This time, I sat
- 5:09Speaker 2: down with my handy dandy notebook and I was watching it,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and I.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Was like, this movie is long.
- 5:17Speaker 1: It's long.
- 5:18Speaker 3: It feels long.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yeah, but when you're like painting or cleaning the house
- 5:24Speaker 2: or whatever, puts it around doing other stuff, it doesn't
- 5:26Speaker 2: feel like it's so long. It's like, oh, we're already there. No,
- 5:29Speaker 2: this movie was like why are we still in this scene?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Could have ended it a couple of minutes ago.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I made a full last meal in
- 5:38Speaker 1: the middle of it. Yeah, I will say that I
- 5:43Speaker 1: do not think. Part of the reason why I think it.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Oh it's nineteen ninety three. I'm so sorry. That's why
- 5:50Speaker 2: we're doing it because it's been thirty years.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Yeah, fail, I think the reason why its so long
- 6:01Speaker 1: is that this? I think this was one of Williams's
- 6:05Speaker 1: least funny roles. I think he's funnier when he just
- 6:08Speaker 1: gets to be him yeah, or the guy from Jumanji.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Because Okay, here's the thing that was really like sticking
- 6:17Speaker 2: in my head after watching it, Like there's a scene
- 6:23Speaker 2: at the end where Daniel's like, how dare you, Miranda?
- 6:27Speaker 3: You did this?
- 6:28Speaker 2: You took my kids away from me, And the whole
- 6:31Speaker 2: time I was like, and during the whole movie where
- 6:34Speaker 2: I'm actually paying attention to it versus having it on
- 6:36Speaker 2: in the background and enjoying the bits that are fun,
- 6:39Speaker 2: it's why is this Miranda's fault?
- 6:42Speaker 3: Why is Miranda the bad guy? Why is Miranda the one.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Who is being treated like all of this chaos is
- 6:49Speaker 2: caused because of her?
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yes, she initiated the.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Divorce, but sir, you brought barn animals into her fucking house.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Right, and you never took anywhere responsibility. And she initiated
- 7:03Speaker 1: the divorce, but she didn't decide that you were an
- 7:05Speaker 1: unfit parent.
- 7:07Speaker 3: The court did the court did.
- 7:09Speaker 1: You had no house, you had no job, and so
- 7:13Speaker 1: they were like, where are we supposed to give these kids?
- 7:16Speaker 1: To you half of the time.
- 7:17Speaker 2: And not only that, once you've lied and tricked everybody
- 7:23Speaker 2: by pretending to be an old, maybe Scottish kind of
- 7:27Speaker 2: english woman, you're upset that the court has decided that
- 7:33Speaker 2: you probably need to have supervised visits with your children.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I don't agree that.
- 7:40Speaker 2: If somebody as a person who spent a lot of
- 7:42Speaker 2: time in family court.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Uh huh.
- 7:44Speaker 2: You best believe I would not have said, oh no, sorry,
- 7:47Speaker 2: I've had a change of heart. I think it's fine,
- 7:50Speaker 2: give him fifty percent custody. I'dam been like I would
- 7:53Speaker 2: like to know weekly updates to ensure my child's safety.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Thanks, thank you. I so that last court scene where
- 8:03Speaker 1: his custody is like fully revoked, Yeah, it's such a
- 8:08Speaker 1: tricky court scene for me, because yes he lied and
- 8:14Speaker 1: yet and yes he tricked everyone, and yes there is
- 8:17Speaker 1: just cause to like question his like supervision of the children.
- 8:23Speaker 1: But instead of leaning on you made the court mistrust you.
- 8:28Speaker 1: You're a liar. How is she supposed to feel safe
- 8:32Speaker 1: if you went to these extreme measures to get back
- 8:35Speaker 1: into a home that you were not welcomed in, They
- 8:38Speaker 1: just like lean towards like your sexual deviant right cross dressing.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I started this movie and I
- 8:45Speaker 1: was like, that's right. This movie is like one of
- 8:48Speaker 1: the first times that I saw like a healthy gay
- 8:50Speaker 1: couple on screen and I was like, with those two
- 8:53Speaker 1: loving Broadway making shit out of plaster. And then by
- 8:56Speaker 1: the end, I was like, this movie is transphobic as fuck, yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 1: which TikTok had told me.
- 9:02Speaker 3: But it's all of that. It's all of the like little.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Things where it's like, this is how we justify that
- 9:08Speaker 1: he's a bad man, right, and like Matthew Lawrence's immediate
- 9:13Speaker 1: transphobia is what kills me.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Yes, yes, when he's like don't touch me.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I get that you're there, but don't you
- 9:22Speaker 2: know it's and it's like I want it re edited, Like,
- 9:28Speaker 2: don't remake it, just re edit it, because you could
- 9:31Speaker 2: re edit this movie where you do kind of where
- 9:35Speaker 2: you do remove the transphobia, and also some of the
- 9:38Speaker 2: other parts where you're just like why is this scene
- 9:41Speaker 2: still going?
- 9:42Speaker 1: And again I think the TUTSI MSSA's Doubtfire get away
- 9:47Speaker 1: with having modern day musicals currently in theaters h because
- 9:53Speaker 1: they're like, well, TUTSI MSA's Doutfire weren't trance, they were
- 9:59Speaker 1: in drag because we don't say cross dressing anymore correct.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I honestly don't know.
- 10:05Speaker 1: So they were in drag, and I was like, okay,
- 10:08Speaker 1: but drag is also seen as in these movies as
- 10:13Speaker 1: like a sexual deviancy. Right, And we're already fighting so
- 10:18Speaker 1: much in this country about like being allowed to go
- 10:22Speaker 1: to drag shows and drag people, being safe at your
- 10:26Speaker 1: library and being safe in your bars where your children
- 10:29Speaker 1: have no reason to be but you're still mad, right,
- 10:33Speaker 1: And so to be watching Missus Stapfire and I'm like,
- 10:36Speaker 1: oh god, they didn't even at no point did they
- 10:40Speaker 1: say this is because you're a liar. They were just like,
- 10:43Speaker 1: we're just really, you need a psyche val you put
- 10:46Speaker 1: on a dress one time. I'm like, no, it's so homophobic.
- 10:51Speaker 2: You know what's interesting, Natalie, because my takeaway this time
- 10:54Speaker 2: I complete.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I superimposed the liar part.
- 11:00Speaker 2: I always just included that in the in the resolution
- 11:04Speaker 2: of the film where he's getting reprimanded by the judge,
- 11:08Speaker 2: and you're like, and you're right, there's no mention of
- 11:12Speaker 2: him being a lot, which which.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Which then led me to why are we continuously making.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Films remove the phobia where we are meant to sympathize
- 11:28Speaker 2: with the person with the man who's done the wrong thing,
- 11:32Speaker 2: the lying, the deceitfulness of.
- 11:35Speaker 3: It all, the you know, the how dare you do
- 11:38Speaker 3: this to me? Attitude? But he's been the bad guy
- 11:43Speaker 3: the whole time.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Right, And I think I write on my notes And
- 11:50Speaker 1: then at the end of the movie, he still he
- 11:53Speaker 1: still wins. He went like fucking justin Timberlake. Sally Field
- 11:57Speaker 1: feels bad for him. She goes to judge of her
- 12:00Speaker 1: own accord and he gets.
- 12:02Speaker 2: To be on TV what and her kids, her kids
- 12:06Speaker 2: are even like, how dare you do this to dad?
- 12:09Speaker 3: Mom? And it just really broke my heart because.
- 12:12Speaker 2: It's like, that's an opportunity to be like, listen, I
- 12:16Speaker 2: love your dad.
- 12:16Speaker 3: He did it to himself. He did this to himself.
- 12:20Speaker 3: I can't.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And I loved her speech when she's like talking to
- 12:24Speaker 2: missus doubtfire, when he's like prodding her about what went wrong,
- 12:28Speaker 2: and she's like, I didn't like who I was becoming
- 12:30Speaker 2: with him. I'm the heavy, I'm the one doing the discipline,
- 12:34Speaker 2: I'm the one doing all these things, and he gets
- 12:36Speaker 2: to be the super fun guy and I don't like that.
- 12:40Speaker 2: I want to have fun with my children too, and
- 12:42Speaker 2: I thought, thank god, they gave her something that's, you know,
- 12:47Speaker 2: kind of redeeming, but still she's the bad guy.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Also, sorry, pause, Hi, Mario show. We're so glad you're here.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And friends, if you are watching us, we don't know
- 12:56Speaker 2: you're here unless you tell us in the comments, So
- 12:58Speaker 2: drop a comment in the comment Welcome Mario, Welcome Mario.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Always enjoy your presence.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Mario. How old were you the first time Missus Doubtfire
- 13:08Speaker 1: made you uncomfortable? Because I think there's a good point
- 13:11Speaker 1: in saying that, Like when we were kids, I do
- 13:15Speaker 1: believe because we were children of them, you know, nineties. Yeah,
- 13:19Speaker 1: so I do believe that it was very easy to
- 13:23Speaker 1: watch those court scenes and go, oh, they're mad at
- 13:26Speaker 1: Robin Williams because he lied, and like the homophobia and
- 13:31Speaker 1: the sexual deviancy completely.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 1: The thing that I think it made it click in
- 13:36Speaker 1: my head is every time I hug my children, the
- 13:41Speaker 1: babysit like the court appointed babysitter looks at me like
- 13:45Speaker 1: I'm abedient, And I.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Was like, oh, yeah, because that's how.
- 13:49Speaker 1: They would immediately assume a man who Because it's also
- 13:55Speaker 1: a lack of Nuance on the General Public's Part two.
- 13:59Speaker 1: He was a man who was wearing a dress for
- 14:03Speaker 1: a drag or to be in some sort of counterculture
- 14:07Speaker 1: or queer culture or anything like that. He was taking
- 14:11Speaker 1: an extreme stance to gaslight his the mother of his children,
- 14:16Speaker 1: and his children to get to continue to be in
- 14:19Speaker 1: their lives, which is bad. It's bad, but it's not
- 14:24Speaker 1: part of the queer community. And that's what they made
- 14:27Speaker 1: it out to be, right, which he then plays into
- 14:30Speaker 1: a lot of the queer community is full of predators.
- 14:34Speaker 1: They're liars. They're trying to trick you, men who are
- 14:39Speaker 1: going to be in drag. That's what they're trying to do.
- 14:41Speaker 1: They're trying to trick you. They're always making fun of.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Me, but they give us a little bit of allyship
- 14:50Speaker 2: through the representation of his brother and his brother's partner,
- 14:53Speaker 2: because you can't help but not love that couple.
- 14:56Speaker 3: They are just so.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Honestly, probably my first exposure to a queer couple, a
- 15:04Speaker 2: gay couple, because I was eight nine when this movie
- 15:07Speaker 2: came out, so so like that to me was like, Oh,
- 15:11Speaker 2: I love these men, Like who are these men?
- 15:14Speaker 3: I love them so much?
- 15:16Speaker 2: And it wasn't like a oh, I love them because
- 15:18Speaker 2: I want to be with them kind of thing, and
- 15:19Speaker 2: there's like a sexual awakening component. It was like, oh,
- 15:23Speaker 2: they're fantastic, m how do I get into their sphere?
- 15:28Speaker 3: Honestly, it really does like blood. It like conflates the
- 15:32Speaker 3: two in a way that is just not okay.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Which is how we used to get away with casual sexism,
- 15:38Speaker 1: homophobia and racism in the nineties. Absolutely yeah, because we
- 15:43Speaker 1: were like, h you can't call us homophobic.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Look how nice the gay guy was.
- 15:50Speaker 1: And then they like put the actual representation on a
- 15:54Speaker 1: pedestal and it's like, but ten minutes ago you it's
- 16:00Speaker 1: And my favorite part I think of the whole movie
- 16:03Speaker 1: is when they're trying on the different faces of him,
- 16:07Speaker 1: because there's never a moment of toxic masculinity where he's like, no,
- 16:13Speaker 1: if I'm going to be a chick, I want to
- 16:14Speaker 1: be prettier or like anything like that. It's literally they
- 16:17Speaker 1: put a mask on him and then he's Barbara streisand
- 16:20Speaker 1: for thirty seconds, or he's Yeddel from Ya Yenta from Fiddler.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I was just gonna say Matchmaker and I'm.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Like, no.
- 16:34Speaker 1: That song is part of a full music Hall. Yeah,
- 16:39Speaker 1: that's probably my first interaction with No. My grandma used
- 16:42Speaker 1: to make.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Us watch Fiddler on the Roof all the time.
- 16:48Speaker 1: But like, that's the that's the most fun part of
- 16:52Speaker 1: the movie. It's not I think that they really thought
- 16:57Speaker 1: and it probably was the most fun part in the
- 16:58Speaker 1: movie in the early nineties that Robin Williams pitying himself
- 17:05Speaker 1: up against Pierce Brosnan while in an old lady dress
- 17:08Speaker 1: was supposed to be the fun of the movie. But
- 17:10Speaker 1: I was like, this makes me feel so gross. Yeah,
- 17:14Speaker 1: because he's interfering in a relationship that he would not
- 17:19Speaker 1: have access to, because he's lying, like.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Yeah, and in lying in such an extreme way. And I,
- 17:29Speaker 2: you know, now having gone through again family court and
- 17:34Speaker 2: trying to date and navigating co parenting and truly sitting
- 17:39Speaker 2: down and watching this movie versus just putting it on
- 17:42Speaker 2: in the background and paying attention to the parts that
- 17:44Speaker 2: I enjoy it. Really, I'm on Miranda's side, what a
- 17:49Speaker 2: violation like her this whole time, this whole time, this
- 17:52Speaker 2: whole time. Scene hit differently this time because I, while
- 17:57Speaker 2: I have been very open about my feelings and what
- 18:00Speaker 2: I've been through with all of the stuff in the
- 18:05Speaker 2: single parenthood that I have experienced. There are still a
- 18:08Speaker 2: lot of elements that I haven't talked about. And this
- 18:12Speaker 2: movie really like hit that chord in me that made
- 18:16Speaker 2: me feel like I can't believe I love this movie,
- 18:22Speaker 2: Like I can't believe that this was something that I
- 18:24Speaker 2: sat through and felt for Daniel Hillard versus Miranda all
- 18:30Speaker 2: these years, because I know what it's like now to
- 18:33Speaker 2: be Miranda, and now that I'm truly paying attention to
- 18:35Speaker 2: this film, it makes me so upset because of the
- 18:38Speaker 2: times that I've been painted poorly for no reason, for
- 18:42Speaker 2: absolutely no reason.
- 18:45Speaker 1: And Miranda isn't even like the like she's the first
- 18:48Speaker 1: of many. She's the first of many moms who have
- 18:51Speaker 1: been made to feel like a drag yeah or you know,
- 18:55Speaker 1: the hammer or whatever, while Dad just gets to be
- 18:58Speaker 1: the guy who like brings goats. Now, Yeah, like Matthew
- 19:01Speaker 1: Lawrence was like turning fourteen or something, why did he
- 19:04Speaker 1: want a petty?
- 19:04Speaker 2: And Zue he's turning twelve, Okay, but the point is
- 19:08Speaker 2: the same. Like they were standing on the kitchen table dancing.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Milla while a horse was wandering there.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Yeah, like even like.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Now it's like, no, I don't know any man who
- 19:22Speaker 2: would be like, yeah, let's stand on the dining room table, Like,
- 19:26Speaker 2: I don't know any grown ass man in his forties
- 19:29Speaker 2: or above who'd be like.
- 19:30Speaker 3: You know, it's a great idea, dancing on the table.
- 19:33Speaker 2: In their own home, in their own home, like you
- 19:37Speaker 2: eat there. Like there was just so many things that
- 19:40Speaker 2: were ridiculous about Daniel that you're just like this, She's
- 19:43Speaker 2: not wrong.
- 19:44Speaker 3: He is truly a child.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And I also don't appreciate the fact that he used
- 19:50Speaker 1: Missus doubtfire as a way to scold Miranda about things
- 19:54Speaker 1: that she was unhappy about. Came to Daniel, she like,
- 19:58Speaker 1: she's about to talk some man chi about him and
- 20:00Speaker 1: to missus outfire, and he's like, oh, dear, I know
- 20:04Speaker 1: that you wouldn't talk badly about the children's father while
- 20:08Speaker 1: they're in the room. Why don't we send them upstairs.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I was like, three minutes ago, three minutes ago, you
- 20:14Speaker 1: literally told baby tiny Matilda that you were going.
- 20:17Speaker 3: To poison her mother with dysentery.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Right, yeah, right.
- 20:23Speaker 3: And that's the other part of it too, because he's
- 20:25Speaker 3: allowed the space to talk poorly of their mother, wish
- 20:32Speaker 3: her dead, terrify the five year old because five year
- 20:35Speaker 3: olds don't want their like they had the concept of that,
- 20:37Speaker 3: Like that's scary. Mmm.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Oh it just made me so frustrated. And I think
- 20:45Speaker 2: he's like, there wasn't.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Enough shirtless Pierce Brosnan for this guys.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Also, because it's been a while since. As I watched
- 20:53Speaker 1: the movie, I go, I thought I remembered Pierce Brostan
- 20:56Speaker 1: like being a jerk, and I'm like, no.
- 20:58Speaker 3: No, you're he his delight.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Paul just a really nice, rich guy. Yeah, just just
- 21:04Speaker 1: the guy she should have married. And so that first
- 21:10Speaker 1: scene because truly, the only thing that we know about
- 21:15Speaker 1: Daniel before the divorce goes down and we're supposed to
- 21:18Speaker 1: take his side that would make him quote unquote a
- 21:22Speaker 1: good responsible father is that he doesn't want children to
- 21:26Speaker 1: think smoking is cool, right, Like I was like, ah,
- 21:30Speaker 1: because he's a cadman.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:32Speaker 2: In California, I'm trying to think of when it was outlawed,
- 21:34Speaker 2: but I have memories of being asked smoking.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Or non smoking when I was growing up.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I don't think it was outlawed until I was in college.
- 21:42Speaker 2: For your state where you were, because in California, California,
- 21:45Speaker 2: I feel like it was one of the first ones
- 21:49Speaker 2: because I remember Seattle outlawed it, like in the early
- 21:54Speaker 2: two thousands.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I want to say, yeah, so I'm going to college
- 22:00Speaker 1: two thousand and seven to two thy and eleven. Yeah,
- 22:03Speaker 1: and I remember walking into restaurants that still smoked like
- 22:07Speaker 1: smoke even though they no longer had a smoking such.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:10Speaker 2: I mean this house that I'm in, the Pete the
- 22:13Speaker 2: original owners were smokers, and somebody removed some of the
- 22:17Speaker 2: popcorn ceiling, and now one of the room smells like smoke.
- 22:21Speaker 3: It lasts forever. It's not great. Okay. Do you want
- 22:24Speaker 3: to know the value.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Of the home because she gives a true a real
- 22:31Speaker 2: address for their address, Like, that's a real house, real address.
- 22:37Speaker 2: It is five point three it's valued at five point
- 22:40Speaker 2: three million dollars.
- 22:41Speaker 1: That's ridiculous.
- 22:42Speaker 3: I know number one.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I thought it was like a town home, but I
- 22:48Speaker 1: have like no concept.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Oh, looking at these photos, I'm like, did they film
- 22:54Speaker 2: actually inside the house?
- 22:58Speaker 3: I'm surprised I could find photos of it the inside anyway.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Also, I think we're supposed to find him like really
- 23:04Speaker 1: redeemable and commendable because he becomes the partner she always
- 23:08Speaker 1: begged him to be through his series of lies and
- 23:11Speaker 1: as we know, I'm fucking tired of that narrative. But
- 23:15Speaker 1: I'm tired because he says we'll go to family counseling
- 23:19Speaker 1: and she's like, no, it's too late.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I'm done. I need to be done.
- 23:24Speaker 1: And that's never respected when it's the woman who's like, no,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I'm done.
- 23:28Speaker 3: And it's always because and for him, it's out of the.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Blue, and it's always the suggestion of therapy is always
- 23:34Speaker 2: out of desperation, and it's never truly valued because therapy
- 23:39Speaker 2: can be really healing and either bring you back together
- 23:44Speaker 2: or highlight that maybe it's time to be a part.
- 23:47Speaker 2: But when it's thrown out like that, when you're trying
- 23:50Speaker 2: so when you're just like, this is exhausting, I can't
- 23:53Speaker 2: do it anymore. The lack of recognition that he is
- 23:56Speaker 2: draining his wife and then let's do therapy, it's it's
- 24:02Speaker 2: a it's an empty it's an empty solution because he's
- 24:05Speaker 2: not willing to change. He just doesn't want his life
- 24:07Speaker 2: to change.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Well, And the whole thing is like her greatest sin
- 24:12Speaker 1: is that she took a grown up job because he
- 24:14Speaker 1: was never going to.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Yeah, like, oh, how like she had a viable career
- 24:20Speaker 2: that she could have moved forward in because you can't
- 24:23Speaker 2: keep a job. Yeah, And it's not like he's a
- 24:26Speaker 2: marginalized person who's facing like prejudices at work, which is
- 24:32Speaker 2: rendering him constantly looking for new work. He is doing
- 24:36Speaker 2: things like well, I can't and cool whatever. You can't
- 24:39Speaker 2: morally encourage children to smoke, got it good for you.
- 24:44Speaker 1: But they truly like and I would be real interested
- 24:48Speaker 1: in to note. How often do you take a voiceover
- 24:51Speaker 1: job where you didn't know that that was coming up?
- 24:55Speaker 1: And I've had a discussion with someone I've I.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Mean, I've been given a script in advance and I've
- 25:01Speaker 2: done voiceover work.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Right, So I don't know what nineteen ninety three was like.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I do know that in like the heyday of the radio,
- 25:11Speaker 2: you were given the script like minutes before you had
- 25:15Speaker 2: to go on air, But that was, you know, ninety
- 25:20Speaker 2: years ago.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Well, and then like there's so much there's so much
- 25:27Speaker 1: about the like nineties Mother in films.
- 25:30Speaker 3: On its late Jewels, you should do an entire series
- 25:34Speaker 3: ninety act just thinking that, Yeah, about.
- 25:37Speaker 1: The late nineties Mother m hm oh, because the only
- 25:42Speaker 1: movie I can think of where the dad is like
- 25:46Speaker 1: really fucking a drag is Beethoven because Bonnie Hunt. You
- 25:51Speaker 1: just can't bring Bonnie Hunt down.
- 25:53Speaker 3: No, you sure can't.
- 25:54Speaker 1: You share can't. So it's literally Beethoven.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Another no I wrote down was Daniel's Matt at Stu
- 26:02Speaker 2: hates his situation, but it's completely.
- 26:08Speaker 3: But it's completely of his own doing.
- 26:10Speaker 2: So, like you hate a man that's better than you,
- 26:13Speaker 2: who's better for your Like I'm not gonna say he's
- 26:15Speaker 2: better for his children, but like there's definitely a stability.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Yeah, am I boring you?
- 26:20Speaker 1: No? I have itchy eyes. We know that I'm struggling today.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sorry. And it just and it just I
- 26:29Speaker 3: hate it. And you know this.
- 26:31Speaker 2: I hate when you have non married couples dating who
- 26:36Speaker 2: are co parenting.
- 26:37Speaker 3: And then the the other partner is like.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Unnecessarily mean to the new partner, like there's no reason
- 26:46Speaker 2: for it.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Like he's just a man.
- 26:49Speaker 3: He didn't like.
- 26:51Speaker 1: It's not like he came to town and then Marina
- 26:55Speaker 1: and then Mariana like had a couple of meetings with
- 26:57Speaker 1: him and then was like, I'm going to divorce William, right,
- 27:02Speaker 1: she went home divorced him. And then Pierce Brosnan came
- 27:07Speaker 1: to town and I was like, yeah, that's what's supposed to happen.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Yeah, And man, I was like, Pierce Broston, You're so cute. Also,
- 27:16Speaker 2: like I forgot how much I loved nineties Pierce Brosnan, Like.
- 27:22Speaker 1: We love nineties Pierce Broston.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Like early nineties, like late eighties, early nineties, because we
- 27:27Speaker 2: used to watch Remington Steel all the time. And I'm wondering.
- 27:31Speaker 2: So then I got me wondering, like do I continue
- 27:33Speaker 2: to watch this movie? Because I love Pierce Broston's character,
- 27:38Speaker 2: like he recognizes and understand like he's so controlled in
- 27:43Speaker 2: a way that doesn't I don't know, it doesn't feel
- 27:45Speaker 2: stuffy to me. It might feel stuffy to other types
- 27:47Speaker 2: of people, but I also grew up in a stuffy environment.
- 27:50Speaker 2: So like when he's talking to the guy at the
- 27:52Speaker 2: pool and he's just like, yeah, great kids, blah blah
- 27:55Speaker 2: blah this stuff.
- 27:55Speaker 3: And the guy's like, are you kidding me?
- 27:58Speaker 2: Like you never wanted kids, and he's like yeah, but
- 28:00Speaker 2: you know, sometimes you change. And these kids are amazing,
- 28:04Speaker 2: and like what am I gonna do about that? Because
- 28:06Speaker 2: I really like their mom and she comes with kids,
- 28:08Speaker 2: so I've changed.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Like and Robin Williams throws fruit to Adam.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's like, I'm sorry, are you threatened by
- 28:17Speaker 2: a man who has his shit together?
- 28:19Speaker 3: Is that it?
- 28:20Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 28:21Speaker 2: And because the difference is is Robin, you're not even
- 28:25Speaker 2: like Daniel. You're not even trying to get your shit together.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Like if he was trying to get his shit together,
- 28:31Speaker 2: then I would be Then I'd be like, yeah, okay,
- 28:33Speaker 2: I'm trying, like I'd be yeah, i'd be mad too,
- 28:36Speaker 2: like I'm fucking trying, homie.
- 28:38Speaker 3: But he's not even trying. He's being deceitful. That is
- 28:42Speaker 3: what he's doing. Yes, well just try.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Well it's the same thing about like on our Britney
- 28:53Speaker 1: Spears episode that dropped today, when I'm like, well, they
- 28:55Speaker 1: want to be a father right up until it comes
- 28:58Speaker 1: to parenting.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Mm hm.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Like he wanted to be the goat guy. Yeah, he
- 29:03Speaker 1: don't want to be the guy making dinner, and then
- 29:05Speaker 1: he ends up being the guy that makes dinner and
- 29:08Speaker 1: he realizes, well, I guess if this is the only
- 29:10Speaker 1: way that I'll get what I want, I'll watch the
- 29:14Speaker 1: Amish Cooking Channel and figure out how to roast chicken.
- 29:17Speaker 1: And it's like, I refuse to make you to have
- 29:20Speaker 1: you feel commendable for that, Like you're not making sacrifices.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Yeah, like see how hard your wife has been.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Go ahead, your wife is paying you to take care
- 29:31Speaker 1: of your own children, and you're accepting that money.
- 29:34Speaker 3: I did the math. It was fifteen. It's fifteen dollars
- 29:37Speaker 3: an hour.
- 29:38Speaker 2: So nineteen ninety three, he's making fifteen dollars an hour
- 29:42Speaker 2: to watch his children.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Because she's like, oh, three kids, three.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Hundred dollars a week, so it's like, okay, three hundred
- 29:47Speaker 2: dollars a week from four to seven. That's like roughly
- 29:49Speaker 2: twenty hours, right, mm hmm. So this man's making fifteen
- 29:53Speaker 2: dollars a week in nineteen ninety three to watch his children,
- 29:56Speaker 2: to watch.
- 29:56Speaker 1: His own children, to make them go in their room
- 29:58Speaker 1: and do their homework.
- 30:00Speaker 2: He plays air guitar mm hmmm with dude looks like
- 30:05Speaker 2: a lady playing in the background.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Which, as we know, I love aerosmith. I know that's
- 30:12Speaker 1: not a great one. M m. That's not a great one.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Steve Tyler hm mmm.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:20Speaker 1: But and then he ropes her two oldest kids into it,
- 30:27Speaker 1: and it's like, when has the call ever been lie
- 30:30Speaker 1: to your other parent? So this can continue to go.
- 30:34Speaker 2: On right, because again he's the victim.
- 30:40Speaker 3: He's playing the victim. He don't tell mom.
- 30:44Speaker 2: None of the stuff. And those kids are old enough
- 30:46Speaker 2: in the state of California to stand up in front
- 30:49Speaker 2: of a judge to say, hey, here's what I would like.
- 30:53Speaker 2: He lost that right when he lied and manipulated his
- 30:58Speaker 2: way back into their lie waves.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Which those kids should be pissed about, and they're not.
- 31:04Speaker 2: That's the thing, and that's part of the like conditioning
- 31:08Speaker 2: that we went through in our generation, right, Like, this
- 31:11Speaker 2: is the conditioning that goes into like, hey, guys and
- 31:15Speaker 2: gals and gays, these types of men are fine.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Well, And if anything, that oldest daughter should be pissed
- 31:25Speaker 1: because I was like, oh, Mom went out of town.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Therefore the oldest daughter is going to be like mom said,
- 31:31Speaker 1: you're grounded, because it's not Dad backing up Mom. It's
- 31:34Speaker 1: gotta be her imposed upon oldest daughter. Third parent child,
- 31:39Speaker 1: right right.
- 31:40Speaker 2: The parenthified child, which is another thing that is really
- 31:43Speaker 2: hard and unfair to do to children, And that's what
- 31:46Speaker 2: he's kind of done to the eldest daughter.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Oh my god, And just like I do find it
- 31:55Speaker 1: odd that this is the second movie that we've watched
- 31:59Speaker 1: where like it's like, no, stepdads are cool, it's the
- 32:03Speaker 1: stepmoms you gotta watch out for. And I'm like, it's
- 32:06Speaker 1: never those stepmoms you have to.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Watch out for. That's interesting, Yeah, it's never.
- 32:12Speaker 1: How do they not that stepdads can't be cool?
- 32:15Speaker 3: But I'm like, it's never those step moms they have
- 32:19Speaker 3: to watch out for. Yeah, that's interesting.
- 32:22Speaker 2: I wonder if that's because they're trying to normalize stepdads
- 32:26Speaker 2: because stay moms.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Are so common.
- 32:28Speaker 2: I mean, I have more stepmom stories in our family
- 32:31Speaker 2: because people have died in childbirth or you know what
- 32:34Speaker 2: have you throughout our family history than we do stepdads.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Maybe or maybe just like the rest of the world,
- 32:45Speaker 1: they all want to favor men. They try and convince
- 32:48Speaker 1: us some and are good people.
- 32:50Speaker 3: I mean, Disney hates women.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Disney hates women. Disney it's very.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Evident throughout all of the stories that they have borrowed
- 32:59Speaker 2: from Grim Disney and the MCU, Like the MCU hates
- 33:04Speaker 2: women and hates women.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Why out of every Avenger did black widow sacrifice herself?
- 33:12Speaker 3: I like, and and when you get to thor and
- 33:15Speaker 3: Love and Thunder, why is nay port why why? Like
- 33:20Speaker 3: it's like it's like we get to me Thorn for
- 33:23Speaker 3: a week, and and.
- 33:25Speaker 2: I know Sony owned, technically owned Spider Man, but we
- 33:28Speaker 2: also lose ant May.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Why do we lose ant May? Marissa to May? You
- 33:34Speaker 1: want to take Marisa to May from me?
- 33:37Speaker 3: Yeah? They did, and I cried and I'm happy. I
- 33:42Speaker 3: was livid.
- 33:42Speaker 2: And then after my son and I saw Love and Thunder,
- 33:44Speaker 2: he was like, Disney hates women.
- 33:47Speaker 3: And I was like, I'm so glad you got there
- 33:49Speaker 3: on your own.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Yeah, look at that. Have you noticed that they've been
- 33:52Speaker 1: murdering mothers for decades?
- 33:54Speaker 3: Decades?
- 33:56Speaker 1: God, I saw had to be eaten by a barracuda.
- 34:00Speaker 2: I saw a TikTok of these people who dressed up
- 34:03Speaker 2: as all the murdered moms and Disney movies.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Did you see it for the Halloween Bash or whatever
- 34:08Speaker 1: it is.
- 34:08Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, yes, justice for moms.
- 34:13Speaker 1: But also there were dads too, because it was like
- 34:15Speaker 1: Tarzan's dad mulled by a tiger.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Oh that's true. Yeah, that's right.
- 34:20Speaker 1: But anyways, what I'm saying is, and I think what
- 34:28Speaker 1: makes me so sad is that this is the one
- 34:30Speaker 1: that I like returned to Robin Williams with I know
- 34:33Speaker 1: much affection for Robin Williams.
- 34:36Speaker 2: And you know what, I owe you an apology because
- 34:38Speaker 2: I knew it and I still forced the issue and
- 34:41Speaker 2: I knew that you hadn't seen anything since.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Yeah, because I wanted to do Hook. That's what I
- 34:47Speaker 1: wanted to re enter Robin Williams with, not even Aladdin.
- 34:50Speaker 3: Why didn't we do Hook?
- 34:52Speaker 1: I think we were supposed to do Hook, and then
- 34:54Speaker 1: I think it ended up getting shuffled around.
- 34:58Speaker 3: And then it like dropped on accident marriage. Yeah, it's
- 35:02Speaker 3: on our list. It's on our list. Yeah, that would
- 35:04Speaker 3: have been a good one to do for Spooky season. Yeah.
- 35:08Speaker 1: And then I did Adam's Family because I knew we
- 35:10Speaker 1: had Missus Doubtfire come out with which Adam's Family was
- 35:13Speaker 1: a bop.
- 35:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a great film.
- 35:15Speaker 2: So what we're learning is that all of Natalie's picks
- 35:17Speaker 2: hold up and all.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Is always your picks.
- 35:21Speaker 3: It is always my picks.
- 35:22Speaker 2: This is why I'm like, I have so much deprogramming
- 35:25Speaker 2: to do, and it's been taking for fucking ever. It's
- 35:27Speaker 2: gonna take the rest of my life to d program.
- 35:30Speaker 1: But next week we're doing Sister Act two, which is
- 35:32Speaker 1: technically your pick on my channel.
- 35:35Speaker 3: That's one of my favorite movies in the entire world.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Everyone's favorite fucking movie.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Wait again.
- 35:41Speaker 1: I love original Sister Act. I love the original one too.
- 35:45Speaker 3: I like the second one better than the first.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Everyone likes the second one better. The music's better. Well,
- 35:50Speaker 1: and Lauren Hill and Lauren.
- 35:51Speaker 3: Hill's ill it if you want to be somebody, Oh
- 36:00Speaker 3: my god, we're gonna next week. We're just gonna sing
- 36:03Speaker 3: for an hour. I can't wait. I can't wait. I
- 36:13Speaker 3: can't wait.
- 36:13Speaker 1: It's gonna be great. No, Honestly, part of me is like,
- 36:23Speaker 1: do we watch both?
- 36:26Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, but I'm gonna I'm just gonna talk
- 36:28Speaker 3: about the second one.
- 36:29Speaker 1: That's fine, I'm gonna want to watch both.
- 36:32Speaker 3: I'm so excited for the third one. That's not why
- 36:34Speaker 3: we're here, though.
- 36:35Speaker 1: That's not why we're here.
- 36:35Speaker 3: We're here to be mean to Robin Williams, which feels terrible.
- 36:39Speaker 3: I know, and it's like, is it even his fault?
- 36:43Speaker 1: He was best friends with my favorite gorilla. Okay, he
- 36:49Speaker 1: was best friends with my favorite gorilla. And I know
- 36:52Speaker 1: that that man was a good man. I know that
- 36:55Speaker 1: that man was a kind man. There was some kid
- 36:58Speaker 1: who loved him and a mom g or something, and
- 37:01Speaker 1: he became that kid's penn pal.
- 37:04Speaker 2: There's a book alias Medam doubt Fire.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Oh, it's based on a book this is.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Based on which was written by a woman. The screenplay
- 37:16Speaker 2: is written by a woman. Two women worked on the
- 37:19Speaker 2: screenplay Crime Against Women. So now, so now we have
- 37:23Speaker 2: to take it to Jellypop's Book Club so we can
- 37:25Speaker 2: do a book to screen adaptation m H.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Side by side comparison.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Because I wonder Robin Williams is a producer, so yeah,
- 37:33Speaker 2: I guess he is to blame partially, Robin.
- 37:37Speaker 3: According to IMDb, Robin, you and I.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Are going to have to sit on that, like we're
- 37:42Speaker 1: just really going to have to hold hands about that later.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Forget that Chris Columbus directed. I love Chris Columbus's stuff.
- 37:52Speaker 1: You're just naming people now, okay.
- 37:54Speaker 2: But other people who pay attention to those things knows
- 37:56Speaker 2: what I'm talking about. Name one more movie that Chris
- 38:01Speaker 2: Columbus did.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Yeah, Home Alone, I Hate Home Alone.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Houston, Home Alone, Hold on Well, Chris Columbus directed the
- 38:16Speaker 2: uh missus Doubtfire, but he also directed There's Something Else
- 38:23Speaker 2: that No, that's producer. I don't want producer credits. I
- 38:25Speaker 2: want director credits.
- 38:29Speaker 3: He did the screen version of Rent. He did nine Months.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he did direct Home Alone. No, I hate
- 38:38Speaker 3: Home Alone. He did Adventures in Babysitting. He directed Adventures.
- 38:42Speaker 1: I love Adventures in Babysitting. I fuck with Adventures in
- 38:45Speaker 1: Babysitting so much. I love the opening of Adventures in
- 38:49Speaker 1: Babysitting where she's singing, why can't I think of the song?
- 38:56Speaker 3: But I don't know.
- 38:57Speaker 2: I'm I'm too busy confirming kissed me. I know all
- 39:02Speaker 2: of the words to that song.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Anyway, So yeah, so yeah, Now we.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Have tried to Jellypop's book Club, so I can do
- 39:12Speaker 2: screen adaptation.
- 39:15Speaker 1: So I do think that there is one redeemable thing
- 39:18Speaker 1: about this movie, and it's that Sally Field's character doesn't
- 39:21Speaker 1: get beaten down into the point where she takes Daniel back.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Yeah was original goal. Yeah, she holds strong. I do
- 39:28Speaker 2: appreciate that she stands firm in her Maria.
- 39:32Speaker 3: Then he kissed me, kiss me. This is the song
- 39:37Speaker 3: she sings in the beginning, Yes it is, that's right.
- 39:39Speaker 3: Then he asked me to be his brat.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Yeah, now I got it.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Now I got it. It's fine.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Everyone were Okay, the three of us make between the
- 39:49Speaker 2: three of us, we know everything about everything. But yeah,
- 39:55Speaker 2: we were saying we appre like, yeah, we'd absolutely the
- 39:59Speaker 2: fact that she's onswer ground in a way that keeps
- 40:02Speaker 2: stays true to what she wanted at the beginning of.
- 40:03Speaker 1: The movie, because there would be like a ton of
- 40:06Speaker 1: movies that would be like and then her and then
- 40:08Speaker 1: the sequel is her and she realizes that Daniel had
- 40:12Speaker 1: it in him all along to be a good father,
- 40:15Speaker 1: and she's like, and I think this is like a
- 40:18Speaker 1: great point that me and Stephanie try to make when
- 40:22Speaker 1: women who are also mothers are leaving their husbands. And
- 40:25Speaker 1: then people are like, he could try her, he could
- 40:28Speaker 1: he could wake up one day and be a good father.
- 40:30Speaker 1: And it's like, well, yeah, no, that's what we want.
- 40:32Speaker 1: But just because he can be a good father doesn't
- 40:34Speaker 1: mean it has to be in my house.
- 40:36Speaker 3: And he's not been doing it.
- 40:38Speaker 2: So like, if I play the lottery for fourteen years
- 40:41Speaker 2: and I never win, how is that different than waking
- 40:45Speaker 2: up and wishing that he's a good father every day.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Also, a lot of us get married when we're still
- 40:50Speaker 1: really immature, and then Sallyfield had to mature real quickly
- 40:54Speaker 1: because she was with a grown toddler.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and that happens a lot for women. It happens
- 41:00Speaker 2: a lot for women. And then again back to the
- 41:03Speaker 2: patriarchy is bad for everybody. So then the guys who
- 41:05Speaker 2: do really want to be a good dad and step
- 41:07Speaker 2: up to be a good dad, they're also treated like
- 41:09Speaker 2: shit because it's not normal, right, and it is.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Really immature to just like literally never have Miranda's back
- 41:17Speaker 1: in front of those kids, right. And she was like,
- 41:20Speaker 1: I was going to do the nice thing. I was
- 41:22Speaker 1: going to come home with a cake and be like, hey,
- 41:25Speaker 1: your report card sucks, but it's still your birthday. It's
- 41:29Speaker 1: still your birthday. We can still celebrate as a family.
- 41:32Speaker 1: And she goes, I fucking come home to the zoo
- 41:35Speaker 1: the zoo, like how dare yes? And it's like, well,
- 41:40Speaker 1: that's why we never get on top of anything, because
- 41:44Speaker 1: we're ready to make a concession in the way that
- 41:49Speaker 1: our boundaries are still met and our expectations are still known,
- 41:53Speaker 1: and we're just bulldozed.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Right right, And she yeah, and that's probably what her
- 41:59Speaker 2: life is been like, and not it probably we know
- 42:01Speaker 2: that's what her life has been like for fourteen years.
- 42:03Speaker 3: And when she finally is like, I'm not allowing you
- 42:05Speaker 3: to do this to me anymore, He's like, no, no, no, wait,
- 42:08Speaker 3: I won't. I'll be dood I'll be good, a good man,
- 42:12Speaker 3: a good man. It's like, will you though.
- 42:16Speaker 2: There is something though that it that I do take
- 42:19Speaker 2: away from that, that I did take away from this
- 42:21Speaker 2: movie all these years that I still say and do
- 42:25Speaker 2: and again sitting down watching it rather than having it
- 42:28Speaker 2: on the background, it was a reminder that this is
- 42:31Speaker 2: something that I do that I get from Missus doutfire.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Is it a Moraine face mask? Is it a cool
- 42:37Speaker 1: whip face mask?
- 42:38Speaker 2: No? No, well that just makes me feel itchy. There's
- 42:44Speaker 2: a scene where as Missus doubtfire, Robin Williams.
- 42:47Speaker 3: Goes, let's do please, let's do please.
- 42:52Speaker 2: So whenever anybody's like do you want to do something,
- 42:54Speaker 2: I'm like, that's my response, let's do please, right.
- 42:58Speaker 1: And like no shit to Robin Williams. Like the voice
- 43:02Speaker 1: was on poet point. As we saw in the very beginning,
- 43:05Speaker 1: I couldn't do the voice for more than thirty seconds.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, hello.
- 43:12Speaker 1: Hello, yeah no, I like we get our we get mannerisms. Like,
- 43:24Speaker 1: every once in a while, I'll still have a nightmare
- 43:27Speaker 1: about that little girl drowning in a pool and then
- 43:29Speaker 1: Beethoven has to go and save her. Yeah, little baby
- 43:33Speaker 1: redhead cut.
- 43:36Speaker 3: Yeah, we need to do Beethoven. We haven't done that
- 43:38Speaker 3: one yet.
- 43:39Speaker 1: You don't don't like it because it's secretly John Hughes's movie.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Maybe it's the sequels I don't like. You Like, I
- 43:51Speaker 2: read up Beethoven and then I bring up it's John
- 43:53Speaker 2: Hughson and yeah, that's a.
- 43:56Speaker 1: John Hughes movie, And I'm like, fuck you.
- 43:58Speaker 3: I would rerobably still watch Almost Fire if you stop
- 44:02Speaker 3: telling me.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Too.
- 44:06Speaker 3: I'm sorry. I'm always like, let's just add it back
- 44:12Speaker 3: to the list.
- 44:12Speaker 1: We'll just land it back to because you bring it up.
- 44:14Speaker 3: We need to talk about it.
- 44:15Speaker 1: And I love Bonnie Hunt. I think that Bonnie Hunt
- 44:19Speaker 1: should be having some sort of.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Like really big career resolution.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Like renaissance, like Marissa Tom Yeah, a mini driver.
- 44:29Speaker 3: She needs to get to the MCU. That's why.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Another thing that I wrote down was the fake calls
- 44:37Speaker 2: before the doubt fire call. What all of the fake
- 44:42Speaker 2: calls that he makes to her before becoming okay, but
- 44:46Speaker 2: here's dangerous and here but also here's the thing.
- 44:50Speaker 3: I was like, oh discrimination.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Discrimination, yes, because I was like, I also have so
- 44:58Speaker 1: many notes. I'm like every about this one called like
- 45:02Speaker 1: it's a series of phone calls and he's like poor
- 45:06Speaker 1: people and ethnic people and mean dominatrix people, and I'm like,
- 45:14Speaker 1: Robin Okay. So there is a comedy special that my
- 45:21Speaker 1: mom used to reenact for me that I've never seen,
- 45:25Speaker 1: but it is like Robin Williams doing impressions from around
- 45:29Speaker 1: the world, and her favorite bit is French people let
- 45:32Speaker 1: baby smoke cigarettes.
- 45:34Speaker 3: Oh God, And.
- 45:35Speaker 1: He's speaking with a French accent and he's like, why
- 45:38Speaker 1: cannot I tie have my cigarette the baby. The baby
- 45:41Speaker 1: does not want the second hand smoked. The baby loves
- 45:43Speaker 1: the cigarette, and he's like, putting those cigarette on the baby. Oh,
- 45:47Speaker 1: I should do that bit all the time. I've never
- 45:49Speaker 1: even seen it.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 45:52Speaker 1: And I'm like, if I watched Robin Williams's stand up,
- 45:57Speaker 1: would it ruin all of his movies for me? Because
- 46:00Speaker 1: I have avoided Bob Saggot's stand up because I know
- 46:04Speaker 1: how raunchy it is. And no one wants Danny Tanner
- 46:07Speaker 1: talking about tits and ass. No, that's not who he
- 46:11Speaker 1: is to me.
- 46:12Speaker 3: No, that's not who he is.
- 46:14Speaker 2: So no, I've never yeah, I don't know, and it
- 46:19Speaker 2: just like it it felt very icky's icky.
- 46:23Speaker 1: It's just that casual nineties racism.
- 46:26Speaker 3: M yeah.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's that blurred line that we used to not
- 46:33Speaker 1: have in the nineties about like, well, what is comedy
- 46:37Speaker 1: and what is punching down?
- 46:39Speaker 3: Right?
- 46:40Speaker 2: Right?
- 46:40Speaker 3: And yeah, go ahead? When So when Robin.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Williams became best friends with my favorite gorilla, Cocoa the Gorilla, yes,
- 46:49Speaker 1: he always attributed it to because he's so hairy and
- 46:53Speaker 1: so Coco the Gorilla actually wanted to be his wife,
- 46:56Speaker 1: like like he's like so he would do this whole
- 46:59Speaker 1: stand up bit about like how attractive he was to
- 47:03Speaker 1: Coco the Gorilla, and I was like, that's punching up
- 47:05Speaker 1: because you're talking about yourself, right, Coco the Gorilla. I
- 47:08Speaker 1: was like, that's funny because that probably is it. You
- 47:11Speaker 1: probably are making her like really comfortable because she fucking
- 47:15Speaker 1: looked like yeah, and he was kind to my favorite
- 47:19Speaker 1: gorilla and she was so sad when he died. And
- 47:25Speaker 1: but then it's like, so it's one thing to be
- 47:28Speaker 1: making fun of yourself and not making it at the
- 47:31Speaker 1: expense of coke of the gorilla. Right, It's another thing
- 47:35Speaker 1: to like be making these phone calls and you're like,
- 47:38Speaker 1: you're making fun of other people's cultures to then be
- 47:41Speaker 1: like they're too dangerous to be around your kids, right,
- 47:44Speaker 1: And that's it.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Because it's like it it just made me very uncomfortable.
- 47:53Speaker 2: And I think it's one of those things that I
- 47:54Speaker 2: don't I walk away during because it's like, oh, yeah,
- 47:57Speaker 2: I know it's gonna happen now, because he's gonna call
- 47:59Speaker 2: and fuck with her and then and be missed out fire.
- 48:01Speaker 2: But watching it this time, I was just like the nineties, man,
- 48:05Speaker 2: this is why we all have to deep program. This
- 48:07Speaker 2: is why we all have a problem with understanding, you know,
- 48:12Speaker 2: why racism is bad.
- 48:16Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, have you heard racism not so trendy anymore? Hey, everybody.
- 48:27Speaker 3: I guess here's my point.
- 48:30Speaker 2: It's the casualness of it that means this normal, and
- 48:34Speaker 2: that's the problem. And that's and I think when we
- 48:37Speaker 2: because we've had we have conversations regularly on my show
- 48:41Speaker 2: about the blatantness of the phobias and the isms, but
- 48:46Speaker 2: the it's the casualness of it that makes it harder
- 48:51Speaker 2: because you're signaling.
- 48:54Speaker 3: That it's okay, it's funny.
- 48:56Speaker 2: And that's why when you have really bad medians tell
- 49:01Speaker 2: really racist jokes and you're and they're like, well, you
- 49:04Speaker 2: can't take a joke, and it's like and not even comedians,
- 49:07Speaker 2: when you have a guy say something racist and well,
- 49:10Speaker 2: you can't take a joke and being funny, and it's like, no,
- 49:13Speaker 2: you're not being funny, you're being racist. But also you
- 49:17Speaker 2: probably watched Missus Stutfire as well and thought it, like,
- 49:21Speaker 2: didn't think deep enough about maybe that's not okay.
- 49:24Speaker 1: And now I want to rewatch Jumanji because Jamanji has
- 49:29Speaker 1: like jungle stuff in it.
- 49:32Speaker 3: Yeah, added to the list.
- 49:36Speaker 1: And as you know, I thought that George of the
- 49:38Speaker 1: Jungle was a wholesome film, yeah, with the smiling Brendan Fraser.
- 49:43Speaker 1: And then you were like, Natalie, they're in Africa. I go,
- 49:46Speaker 1: they are in Africa, but the white man is the
- 49:50Speaker 1: butt of their jokes. I thought it was fine, and
- 49:53Speaker 1: they're like, he's like and then you were like, no,
- 49:56Speaker 1: why is George of the Juggle the king of Africa?
- 49:58Speaker 1: I go, that is also confused now that you said
- 50:03Speaker 1: it out loud, because he's the elusive white ape. I
- 50:07Speaker 1: don't know.
- 50:07Speaker 3: I didn't write the script. I didn't write the story.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Yeah, but anyways, I still danced, I mean around the fire.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Lesley Man was still good in that movie. And I
- 50:21Speaker 2: love that guy that plays Lionel. I love that guy
- 50:25Speaker 2: every time.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Yeah, he's ah, what's his name?
- 50:29Speaker 1: Every time he pops up in a movie, I'm thrilled.
- 50:32Speaker 2: I think he's my favorite. And he's an easy A, right,
- 50:35Speaker 2: he's the teacher in Easy A. Yeah.
- 50:36Speaker 3: I think that might be my favorite of his roles
- 50:38Speaker 3: because he's just so chill.
- 50:40Speaker 1: I also love that gay man with the raspy voice
- 50:42Speaker 1: from this movie. Every time he's in a movie, I'm like.
- 50:45Speaker 3: Oh, Harvey something, Harvey something.
- 50:47Speaker 1: He's like the Rosie O'Donnell where it's like you just
- 50:50Speaker 1: feel like you're at home, because he used to be
- 50:52Speaker 1: in all of the movies.
- 50:54Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he there is something comforting about him. I agree, Harvey.
- 51:01Speaker 3: It's gonna bother me what his name is.
- 51:05Speaker 2: But and again I think, and maybe I've had this
- 51:08Speaker 2: conversation with you before, but it's like, I really do I.
- 51:14Speaker 3: Firestein Firestein?
- 51:17Speaker 1: Oh okay, yeah, I do remember it looking like Weinstein
- 51:20Speaker 1: when I was looking at it, Are we fu watching
- 51:24Speaker 1: a Weinstein movie? God damn it.
- 51:27Speaker 2: But again it's like I think that thank you. Yep,
- 51:30Speaker 2: Mario got there. I don't know if he got there
- 51:32Speaker 2: before me, but he got there.
- 51:33Speaker 1: Hairspray. Yeah, he did the mom in the original run
- 51:37Speaker 1: of Hairspray.
- 51:37Speaker 2: Yes, yes, And and I think again, one of the
- 51:41Speaker 2: things that I was always kind of a comfort in
- 51:44Speaker 2: this film was that couple. Yes, there's something about them
- 51:48Speaker 2: that's very wonderful. But then it also when you look
- 51:54Speaker 2: at everything else, you're just like, fuck you guys. You
- 51:56Speaker 2: cann't have done better for them, Like you still you
- 51:59Speaker 2: just plugged them in as a token to be like,
- 52:01Speaker 2: we're not shitty.
- 52:02Speaker 3: It's San Francisco. There has to be a gay couple.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Well, and then I was like, well, how nice is
- 52:07Speaker 1: it to have a film that people were going to
- 52:09Speaker 1: watch with their families and his brother is in an
- 52:12Speaker 1: active gay relationship, if not marriage, right, and his kids
- 52:16Speaker 1: know the partner and everything, right, That's not something that
- 52:19Speaker 1: happened in my house. Just because you were gay didn't
- 52:22Speaker 1: mean I knew your partners.
- 52:23Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, Pullan calls them aunt Jack and everything.
- 52:28Speaker 1: And I was like yes, that's right. Nineties, we got
- 52:31Speaker 1: this right. We're in a family fun film that plays
- 52:34Speaker 1: on Disney and on Cable, and there's gay people in it.
- 52:37Speaker 1: And then I was like, nope, never mind, we're still homophobic. Yeah,
- 52:42Speaker 1: we just called drag queens deviance.
- 52:44Speaker 3: And tokenizing the gay couple.
- 52:47Speaker 1: It's tokenizing and I can never feel comfort ever.
- 52:51Speaker 3: So that leads us to our final question. There's your answer,
- 52:55Speaker 3: you're coming over.
- 52:57Speaker 1: I can only feel comfort should I be watching You
- 53:00Speaker 1: Return to Me, which has nothing rott in it.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Ever?
- 53:07Speaker 1: For the Adams Family, which also has nothing rotten in
- 53:11Speaker 1: it ever? Also, do you?
- 53:14Speaker 3: So?
- 53:15Speaker 1: I went on an Adams Family rabbit hole. So there's
- 53:19Speaker 1: Adams Family, and then there's Adams Family Values. And then
- 53:23Speaker 1: there was a TV show that I think used to
- 53:25Speaker 1: be on like ABC Family that you could watch. Did
- 53:28Speaker 1: you never watch the TV show?
- 53:30Speaker 2: Remember when I told you that you don't have cable, Well,
- 53:34Speaker 2: we didn't have cable growing up. And then also, like
- 53:36Speaker 2: anything that was remotely similar to the Adams Family was
- 53:39Speaker 2: not a vibe in our house.
- 53:40Speaker 1: I had forgotten that I had watched the live action
- 53:42Speaker 1: TV show until I saw photos of it.
- 53:44Speaker 3: I was like, oh, yes, I have watched that.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so then to try and link the TV
- 53:50Speaker 1: show storyline to the original, not the original, but the
- 53:54Speaker 1: Adams Family movie with the Angelica Houston. They tried to
- 53:57Speaker 1: tell get her back and that man had already died,
- 54:01Speaker 1: and she's like, I won't do it without him.
- 54:03Speaker 3: Oh love.
- 54:05Speaker 1: And there are Adam's Family movies with a whole new cast.
- 54:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:09Speaker 3: I didn't know that.
- 54:11Speaker 2: Yeah, but I love that because you can't. Their chemistry
- 54:15Speaker 2: is so fantastic. My comfort level, Natalie, is that I
- 54:22Speaker 2: don't have any like I walked away feeling this movie's
- 54:26Speaker 2: too long, not really okay with the casual isms and phobias.
- 54:31Speaker 2: And I stand by if they recut it to be
- 54:35Speaker 2: less time and to cut out some of the things
- 54:39Speaker 2: that aren't great. Yeah, I think it could work, but
- 54:44Speaker 2: well I probably. Well I still put it on in
- 54:45Speaker 2: the background to clean the house. Probably.
- 54:48Speaker 1: It's got a good soundtrack. Yeah, I think it's nice
- 54:51Speaker 1: to hear it Robin Williams's.
- 54:53Speaker 3: Voice, you know, And we'll see. I'll report back if
- 54:58Speaker 3: I actually do, because you know, I don't know.
- 55:02Speaker 2: It's just it's so nice to watch a movie about
- 55:05Speaker 2: San Francisco, or not about in San Francisco that doesn't
- 55:08Speaker 2: feel like they're trying.
- 55:09Speaker 3: Too hard to make it San Francisco.
- 55:12Speaker 1: Yeah, And I love that.
- 55:13Speaker 2: It's like movies that take place in New York or
- 55:16Speaker 2: movies that take place in New York. It's not it's
- 55:18Speaker 2: not like New York's the third character.
- 55:19Speaker 3: It's just New York.
- 55:21Speaker 2: And I feel like a lot of times when they
- 55:22Speaker 2: make movies in San Francisco, they try to make San
- 55:24Speaker 2: Francisco another character and movie in it.
- 55:28Speaker 1: Yeah, like that iconic scene of Anne Hathaway trying to
- 55:31Speaker 1: drive up the hill in the Yeah.
- 55:34Speaker 2: One of the most steep hills, or like in Wedding
- 55:37Speaker 2: Planner when they have like the people going down the
- 55:40Speaker 2: you know, the and there's just like, like I get it,
- 55:44Speaker 2: Like you're including things about San Francisco because that's you know,
