- 0:16course, yin yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, reflexology
- 0:21and even mindset acts. So thank you so much for
- 0:27pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:30Let's do this. Oh, hey, hey there, Yinning at
- 0:34life gang. Or maybe today, you know what?
- 0:36It's just you and me sitting down.
- 0:38We're going to have a cup of tea or your favorite matcha latte or
- 0:42cappuccino, and we're going to have a little heart to heart.
- 0:45OK, There's something that I want to talk about.
- 0:48And if you've been in my world recently, you know, I am all
- 0:52about a vibe of really embodying living your best life after the
- 1:00age of 40 and way beyond that. So this is what I want to talk
- 1:06about today. It's this whole idea of what our
- 1:10bodies and minds really need after 40 because let's be
- 1:14honest, things feel different, right?
- 1:18Like, I know it does for me. And it's kind of like one day
- 1:22you wake up and you realize, you know what?
- 1:25You're not bouncing and springing out of bed the way you
- 1:28used to, right? Like, you got to stretch a
- 1:31little bit. There's some stiffness in your
- 1:33hips, you know, Like, you can feel the shoulders kind of
- 1:36creaky, reeky. And, you know, you stay up late
- 1:40and it takes two days to recover.
- 1:43You know that and sleep, sometimes it's like your body
- 1:48forgot how to sleep. Like you wake up and you're like
- 1:51what? I'm like, I didn't even get like
- 1:543 hours of sleep last night. I was staring at my ceiling.
- 1:57And you know, you start to put these little pieces together and
- 2:01you start to wonder like what the heck's going on here?
- 2:05But here's the thing, nothing's wrong per SE.
- 2:10OK, I want to start by that. I'm not saying that there aren't
- 2:13things that maybe need to be addressed, but I want you to
- 2:17know that when you hit your 40s, you're entering into a new
- 2:22season of life and hopefully a wiser 1 and a softer 1.
- 2:29And I will tell you that in this season of over 40s, it's about,
- 2:34I don't know about for you, but for me, it's about craving calm.
- 2:38It's about craving stillness. It's about create craving
- 2:43flexibility in my mind as well as my body.
- 2:45It's also about craving connection.
- 2:48Like that's why I'm here on this podcast riffing.
- 2:52This is also why I have a new blog on my website,
- 2:56soulfulyin.com. It's because I'm craving more
- 3:01connection and community. And I'm also really craving
- 3:05helping people live their best life after 40.
- 3:11And I'll tell you that that's why I believe, like I truly
- 3:14believe with every single fiber in my being, that yin yoga is
- 3:19the most important practice for people over 40.
- 3:22I'm not saying there are other things that are important, but
- 3:25let me just talk about why yin yoga is so important, OK?
- 3:30After 41st of all, we are living in a world that's go, go, go and
- 3:37more go, right? Even when we think we're
- 3:41resting, like, you know, we're numbing and scrolling through
- 3:44Instagram and Facebook or we're binging on Netflix, we're still
- 3:50kind of thinking, we're still kind of planning.
- 3:53And you know what? Our nervous system is constantly
- 3:58switched on and that's not a good thing.
- 4:03Like it means we're in a constant sympathetic flight or
- 4:08fright state. And you know what it's important
- 4:12to be in that state at sometimes, right?
- 4:15Like if you're standing there and there's a bear in front of
- 4:18you, you have got to know how to turn on that sympathetic nervous
- 4:22system state because otherwise you're going to end up being
- 4:25filet mignon, right? Like you know how you know have
- 4:28to know how to respond. But there's also a really
- 4:33crucial part of time in our life where we need to be in that
- 4:40parasympathetic state. Rest and digest, rest and
- 4:43repair, chill the F out, right? And when you hit 40, with
- 4:51hormones starting to shift, responsibilities piling up,
- 4:57maybe you got teenagers at home or even still younger children
- 5:01because we are seeing people starting families later in life
- 5:04now. Or maybe we've got aging parents
- 5:07that we're caring for. Maybe we've got both.
- 5:10So we're kind of that sandwich generation.
- 5:14And our body starts to whisper, hey, please, can we like slow
- 5:20down here? Like, please, just can we just
- 5:22slow down? This is what your body is
- 5:23saying, right? Yin yoga is that slow down.
- 5:30It's literally like hitting the pause button on the world.
- 5:35You're not rushing, you're not striving, you're not trying to
- 5:40perfect a pose. You're just being.
- 5:46And in that being, in that surrendering, your nervous
- 5:49system goes, thank you, thank you, thank you so much.
- 5:59What happens when your nervous system starts to be in that
- 6:02state more often? You start sleeping better, your
- 6:07body starts feeling more at ease, your mind gets quieter,
- 6:13less scattered, which God knows we need way more of.
- 6:19So let's talk another reason why it is so important to do yen
- 6:28yoga after 40. And that's mobility and
- 6:31flexibility, people. Let's face it.
- 6:34After 40, your joints, fascia, connective tissues need more
- 6:38love than ever. As we get older, fascia and
- 6:43connective tissue starts to stiffen.
- 6:47It starts to shrink. It doesn't lengthen.
- 6:50Your joints start producing less synovial fluid.
- 6:53They creak more. And the beauty about yin yoga is
- 6:58that it goes straight to those deeper layers, right?
- 7:01The ones that hold the tension, the ones that stiffen with time,
- 7:07the ones that silently affect how you move and feel your
- 7:10joints, fascia and connective tissue.
- 7:15And when you're holding a yin pose gently, when you're
- 7:20propping yourself up, and I am such a massive proponent of
- 7:25propping, it's not cheating if you're using props.
- 7:28Because sometimes people will ask me that, oh, I have to use
- 7:31this block to support me. I'm cheating, right?
- 7:34No, you're not. You're honoring your body.
- 7:38And I'll tell you that the more that you prop, the more your
- 7:41body will open up gently, passively, patiently, and you're
- 7:48nourishing your body from the inside out.
- 7:51You're not pushing, you're not forcing.
- 7:53You actually get more by propping up.
- 7:59And you're being given your body a space to soften, to release,
- 8:04and to heal. Like we all need that.
- 8:09Even if you're not in your 40s, trust me, you need that anyway.
- 8:15And let me talk about one other thing, and this is honestly my
- 8:19favorite. My favorite part about yin is
- 8:23that it teaches you how to listen to yourself, to listen to
- 8:28your body, to listen to your thoughts, to listen to your
- 8:34feelings, to be in tune with your emotions and maybe what
- 8:42needs to shift. And if you want to know more
- 8:46about how yin helps you with your emotions and ultimately
- 8:50your organ health, you can check out.
- 8:53I have a plethora of episodes on the podcast that talk about yin
- 8:59yoga, your emotions, your organs, the Meridian system,
- 9:04like it's all there, OK? Yin yoga is not about how far
- 9:10you can go, it's about how deeply can you feel.
- 9:16You get to learn how to meet yourself exactly as you are and
- 9:24exactly where you are. And you know what I don't know
- 9:29about you, but after 40 I am like so done.
- 9:33And I mean I am so done with the push harder do more mentality.
- 9:38I talked about this in my episode about how we're still in
- 9:44that hustle culture, right? Of push more, do more people
- 9:49expect more mentality, right? And I'm done with that.
- 9:54I did it in the corporate world. I even did it running this
- 9:56business. But I want peace.
- 10:00I want presence now. I want to feel good in my body,
- 10:05not just look strong, but I want to feel supported on all levels.
- 10:10Physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually,
- 10:17energetically. I want to feel it all.
- 10:22And yin gives you all of that. It gives you mental support, It
- 10:28gives you emotional support, physical sport support,
- 10:32energetic support. It gives you all of that.
- 10:35It's a practice that says, you know what, you don't have to do
- 10:39more. You just have to be here.
- 10:43You just got to be willing to listen.
- 10:47And I'll tell you when you're in a yen pose and you're holding it
- 10:51for 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, and you're properly
- 10:55supported here. This is a big key, All right?
- 10:57You're properly supported. So yeah, you're feeling the
- 11:02stretch, right? Because you want to feel that.
- 11:05But it's not so intense that you're like, Oh my God, like,
- 11:09are we done yet? Can I get out of this pose?
- 11:10Like, I can't handle it. I'm squirming, I'm moving, I'm
- 11:13fidgeting. I'm now talking in my mind like
- 11:16that's not what we're looking for here.
- 11:19When you're properly supported using the props, and I mean when
- 11:22I talk about props, you can literally get away with, like I
- 11:26always say, you absolutely need 2 yoga blocks.
- 11:29Well, you know what? You can get them at Walmart,
- 11:30like 10 bucks, two blocks. You need some kind of yoga
- 11:34strap. You can use a belt, a scarf, a
- 11:37tie, just something that's pretty sturdy.
- 11:40And then you've got other things that are literally hanging
- 11:43around your house like blankets, pillows, cushions.
- 11:47They can all, even books, they can all be used as props.
- 11:51So when you are using your props and you're supporting your body,
- 11:56you will be more adapt to listening to what it's saying to
- 12:01you. And I'll tell you, I know that
- 12:06if you're listening to this episode, I know you're craving
- 12:09better sleep. I sure as heck know you're
- 12:13craving less tension, more ease in your hips and your back and
- 12:18your shoulders and in your neck. God forbid I think all the
- 12:22people that I that I have that what I call have tech neck,
- 12:26right? Like rounding their shoulders,
- 12:30hunching forward. Their necks are rounding like
- 12:33they've got such stiffness in their neck that they literally
- 12:36cannot even turn their head a little bit.
- 12:39I'm telling you that's not good. And your mind, it's literally
- 12:45screaming at you, please, more peace, more peace.
- 12:48I need more peace, right? Well, friend in yoga is calling
- 12:54your name seriously. And the best part, and I'm going
- 12:59to tell you this is a myth. A lot of people still say, oh,
- 13:02well, you need an hour before you get any benefit.
- 13:06You need all the fancy gear. No, you don't.
- 13:13You just need a few props that you have.
- 13:16Like I said earlier, you don't even need a yoga mat.
- 13:21You could use blankets, you know, and you can start with 5
- 13:25minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes. I will tell you there's a sweet
- 13:29spot in a 15 minute practice and I'll tell you, for me, this was
- 13:35a major shift in my life because I came from a personal practice
- 13:41where I needed two hours in order to feel at peace, calm.
- 13:48But I was also in a highly, highly, highly stressed state at
- 13:52the time. But I was able over time to wean
- 13:56myself down to an hour, to 45 minutes, to 30 minutes, to even
- 14:03now 15 minutes. Because the magic here isn't in
- 14:08the time, it's in the intention. So if I know, like, you know
- 14:13what, I got 15 minutes today. That's all I got.
- 14:17My intention in those 15 minutes is to find calm, to release some
- 14:24tension and to feel at ease in my mind, my body, and in my
- 14:30life. And in 15 minutes, I can do
- 14:34that. I will tell you, I invite you
- 14:39before you go to bed tonight, I want you to slip into what I
- 14:44call reclined butterfly pose. This is a really simple pose.
- 14:48You're going to lay on your back.
- 14:50You're going to bring the soles of your feet together, and
- 14:52you're going to open your knees wide.
- 14:54You could even do this in bed if you wanted to.
- 14:55I'm going to prop underneath your knees.
- 14:58So grab some blankets, roll them up.
- 15:00Towels work too. If you have your blocks, grab
- 15:03your blocks and close your eyes, draw your shoulder blades apart
- 15:09and start to take a few really deep breaths and just allow
- 15:14yourself to be no agenda. Your mind will start to wander
- 15:20because that's what it does. I want you to just keep coming
- 15:23back to the sound of your breath.
- 15:25Maybe even count your breath out in your mind.
- 15:30I will tell you that your body will thank you for this big
- 15:35time, your mind even more so. Your mind is going to be going
- 15:40Hallelujah. Thank you so much for these few
- 15:45minutes of peace of release and an ease.
- 15:54And I promise you, if you start a regular practice, even 15
- 16:00minutes a day, your sleep is going to thank you.
- 16:05Because you know what? The more calm you are and the
- 16:08more your nervous system it is in this more beautiful
- 16:12parasympathetic rest and repair state, you will sleep better.
- 16:20So this is my little riff for today Wasn't very long.
- 16:25It's all about how to inspire you to soften, to slow down, and
- 16:31to explore in in this new season of life.
