- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud or
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whaltbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 4: that keeps your investments growing.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And your stress levels low.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Okay, so I've been getting a bunch of messages about
- 1:06Speaker 4: the share market taking a little bit of a hit,
- 1:10Speaker 4: the US recession fears, and Trump making policy moves. And
- 1:14Speaker 4: we've also been talking in my DMS a lot about
- 1:16Speaker 4: the ASX dropping billions of dollars in value, and of
- 1:19Speaker 4: course the headlines are making it sound so overly dramatic.
- 1:23Speaker 4: But here's the thing, I'm not worried. I'm Victoria Devine.
- 1:27Speaker 4: I'm an ex financial advisor who has helped hundreds, if
- 1:30Speaker 4: not thousands, of clients make millions through investing. I've seen
- 1:34Speaker 4: these market freakouts before, and you know what, I'm going
- 1:38Speaker 4: to see them again, and honestly, they're actually where the
- 1:41Speaker 4: real money is being made. So if you are like
- 1:45Speaker 4: a lot of people in my community and you are
- 1:47Speaker 4: panicking about your investments right now, or you're thinking of
- 1:50Speaker 4: pulling your money out of the market, or maybe even
- 1:53Speaker 4: refreshing your superbalance every five minutes, this episode is exactly
- 1:57Speaker 4: what you need to hear right now. Start by breaking
- 2:01Speaker 4: down what's actually happening. Trump is being well, he's being
- 2:05Speaker 4: Trump again right. He's introduced new tariffs on Canada, Mexico,
- 2:09Speaker 4: and China, which is making businesses really hesitant to invest
- 2:13Speaker 4: because they don't know what's coming next. CEOs are holding
- 2:16Speaker 4: back on their spending and they're hiring, which is then
- 2:19Speaker 4: in turn slowing down economic growth. And then there's the
- 2:23Speaker 4: Department of Government Efficiency or the DOGE led by Elon Musk.
- 2:29Speaker 2: This new initiative is.
- 2:30Speaker 4: All about slashing federal spending and that's leading to really
- 2:34Speaker 4: large scale public sector layoffs, especially in Washington, DC.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And my friend, here's the thing.
- 2:41Speaker 4: If there are fewer government jobs, there are fewer paychecks.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And if there are.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Fewer paychecks, there's lower consumer spending. And if there's lower
- 2:48Speaker 4: consumer spending, that equals slower economic activity. When asked about
- 2:53Speaker 4: all of this in a very relatable Fox News interview,
- 2:57Speaker 4: Trump didn't deny the possibility of a recession. Instead, he
- 3:01Speaker 4: decided to call it a transition period. Meanwhile, his Treasury
- 3:06Speaker 4: secretary referred to it as a detox period, as they
- 3:10Speaker 4: still push ahead with spending cuts, and the market has
- 3:13Speaker 4: reacted to his.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Comments understandably so.
- 3:16Speaker 4: At the time of US recording this, we've seen the
- 3:19Speaker 4: S and P five hundred, which is the top five
- 3:21Speaker 4: hundred companies in America, tumble about two point seven percent overnight,
- 3:26Speaker 4: the Nasdaq has slumped four percent, and our ASX or
- 3:29Speaker 4: the Australian Stock Exchange, has lost about fifty billion dollars
- 3:33Speaker 4: worth of value, which means you're probably seeing a little
- 3:36Speaker 4: bit of red in your share portfolio when you're logging in,
- 3:39Speaker 4: and that can be really stressful.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I get it.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Historically we have spoken about how a US market dip
- 3:45Speaker 4: then in turn impacts Australia so much but he's a
- 3:49Speaker 4: little quick refresher.
- 3:51Speaker 2: We follow Wall Street.
- 3:52Speaker 4: The Australian stock market takes cues from global trends, and
- 3:56Speaker 4: when the US stock market drops, the Australian Stock exchange
- 4:00Speaker 4: tends to dip as well. Australia's economy is heavily tied
- 4:04Speaker 4: to exports, so if Trump's trade war slows down China's economy,
- 4:09Speaker 4: demand for iron, ore, coal and agricultural goods could actually
- 4:13Speaker 4: take a hit as well. And when global markets look
- 4:16Speaker 4: unstable and they just don't look like a place you
- 4:18Speaker 4: want to be, investor confidence ultimately drops, which means more
- 4:22Speaker 4: Australian investors starts selling out of fear and we get
- 4:25Speaker 4: a little bit worried, which then leads to even bigger
- 4:29Speaker 4: market swings and dips. But does that mean you should
- 4:32Speaker 4: also panic and sell all of your shares, my friend,
- 4:35Speaker 4: absolutely not. I really do get it. I get stressed too.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Seeing red in your portfolio is never fun. But before
- 4:43Speaker 4: you make any big moves.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Let's take a breath and let's step back.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Because while the headlines are literally designed to freak you
- 4:50Speaker 4: out because that's what sells, media, history tells a really
- 4:53Speaker 4: different story. Stick with me because I'm going to explain
- 4:57Speaker 4: after the break, and I'll let you in on exactly
- 5:00Speaker 4: see what I am personally doing with my investments right now.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Don't go anywhere, all right, So we are back and
- 5:10Speaker 4: we know what's happening with the headlines. We know the
- 5:12Speaker 4: headlines are dramatic. The market is currently down, and if
- 5:15Speaker 4: you're checking your investments, you might be feeling a little
- 5:18Speaker 4: bit uneasy right now. And while yes, I do have
- 5:22Speaker 4: thoughts about what Trump's actions will do to the economy
- 5:26Speaker 4: when it comes to the share market, here's why I'm
- 5:29Speaker 4: actually not worried, and my friend, why you shouldn't be either.
- 5:32Speaker 4: News outlets they love a dramatic headline, words like plummet
- 5:36Speaker 4: and crash and market meltdown.
- 5:39Speaker 2: The media wants you to.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Panic because panic gets clicks fear cells. But making financial
- 5:46Speaker 4: decisions based on fear or maybe even what the masses
- 5:49Speaker 4: are doing is literally how you're going to lose a
- 5:52Speaker 4: lot of money. There with me, let's go back in
- 5:54Speaker 4: time to when the COVID crash happened. It was way
- 5:59Speaker 4: worse than this, with a thirty four percent drop in
- 6:03Speaker 4: honestly just weeks. But this time, instead of following the
- 6:06Speaker 4: masses and panic selling. Let's pretend you actually put ten
- 6:10Speaker 4: thousand dollars into the share market. That money today would
- 6:14Speaker 4: be worth about thirty thousand dollars. So, my friend, the
- 6:18Speaker 4: best investors aren't actually running around with their hair on
- 6:20Speaker 4: fire right now. They're calmly looking for opportunities.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong.
- 6:24Speaker 4: They have seen the red and they got that drop
- 6:26Speaker 4: in their stomach too. But they need to step back
- 6:29Speaker 4: and look at the bigger picture. Because when shares are
- 6:32Speaker 4: down stocks are on sale, you're buying more with less.
- 6:36Speaker 4: That's a money win. Smart investors know that the market
- 6:40Speaker 4: moves in cycles. This isn't new information. This is literally
- 6:44Speaker 4: how the markets work. Right now, we're in the downturn phase.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Something like rising interest rates, political uncertainty, or in this case,
- 6:54Speaker 4: Trump's tariffs have triggered a sell on. Prices start to fall,
- 6:59Speaker 4: Investors get really nervous, and the headlines they go into overdrive.
- 7:03Speaker 2: The media is here to make money.
- 7:05Speaker 4: This is when panic sets in and a lot of
- 7:07Speaker 4: people make the mistake of selling down their portfolios and
- 7:12Speaker 4: ultimately locking in their losses out of fear. But here's
- 7:15Speaker 4: the thing. This phase, it doesn't last forever. After the downturns.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Comes accumulation, the phase where experienced investors.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Start buying while the prices are low.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Markets might feel really uncertain, but this is when savvy
- 7:30Speaker 4: investors see an opportunity. They're essentially buying quality assets at
- 7:35Speaker 4: a discount, knowing that markets historically recover over time.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Then we move into markup.
- 7:42Speaker 4: The economy has stabilized, businesses grow, and more people are
- 7:46Speaker 4: starting to invest again. Prices then rise and optimism returns
- 7:51Speaker 4: as demand increases. Prices start rising and those who invested
- 7:56Speaker 4: during the downturn they are now reaping the rewards of
- 8:00Speaker 4: buying in when others were too nervous to do so. Next,
- 8:04Speaker 4: this is like the emotional investment roller coaster i've spoke
- 8:07Speaker 4: to you about before. Next comes euphoria, where investing feels
- 8:11Speaker 4: like a sure thing. Stocks are booming, everyone wants in
- 8:16Speaker 4: the media is talking about it. Your friends, your family,
- 8:18Speaker 4: your neighbor's dog is telling you about an investment opportunity.
- 8:22Speaker 4: This is when the market is at its peak, but
- 8:25Speaker 4: it's also when you are taking the most risk and
- 8:29Speaker 4: things are potentially overinflated, And then you know what happens,
- 8:34Speaker 4: The cycle repeats itself. Right now, we are in the downturn.
- 8:38Speaker 4: But if history tells us anything, this is just another
- 8:42Speaker 4: phase in the bigger picture. Here's the thing about market
- 8:46Speaker 4: downturns that the wealthy like to keep to themselves. They're
- 8:50Speaker 4: actually a golden opportunity for long term investors. Think of
- 8:54Speaker 4: it like a Black Friday sale a favorite shop, but
- 8:58Speaker 4: instead of discounter cloth, you can find quality investments at
- 9:02Speaker 4: a bargain price. And this is exactly why you might
- 9:06Speaker 4: be seeing people on TikTok saying things like Trump is
- 9:09Speaker 4: tanking the economy on purpose so his wealthy mates can
- 9:12Speaker 4: buy in at a discount while everybody else is panicking.
- 9:15Speaker 4: The idea is that when the markets drop, experienced investors
- 9:19Speaker 4: see an opportunity. They scoop up the stocks while prices
- 9:22Speaker 4: are low, knowing that eventually the markets are going to
- 9:25Speaker 4: recover and hit new highs. Meanwhile, every day investors who
- 9:29Speaker 4: panic and sell at the bottom, Unfortunately, they're the ones
- 9:33Speaker 4: who miss out on the rebound.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Now.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Whether or not Trump is deliberately trying to crash the
- 9:38Speaker 4: market is up for debate, but what's not up for
- 9:42Speaker 4: debate is market downturns. They create opportunities for those who
- 9:46Speaker 4: stay come and think about the big picture.
- 9:48Speaker 2: And that's exactly why.
- 9:50Speaker 4: If you're investing for the long term, which if you're
- 9:52Speaker 4: listening to this show right now you probably are, then
- 9:56Speaker 4: what happens in the market today, tomorrow, or even a
- 9:59Speaker 4: year from now doesn't really matter that much. What matters
- 10:03Speaker 4: is whether the market is in ten, twenty or thirty
- 10:06Speaker 4: years from now, and historically it's always higher, So you
- 10:10Speaker 4: need to maintain your investment strategy during market corrections. You
- 10:14Speaker 4: don't want to freak out, sell low, and then buy
- 10:16Speaker 4: back in when the prices are higher again. That's literally
- 10:20Speaker 4: how wealth then gets transferred from the impatient people to
- 10:23Speaker 4: the patient people. This is why I am obsessed with
- 10:26Speaker 4: understanding market psychology. When everyone is panicking, that's usually the
- 10:31Speaker 4: exact time you should be doing the opposite.
- 10:34Speaker 2: As the saying goes, be fearful.
- 10:35Speaker 4: When others are greedy, and then be greedy when others
- 10:38Speaker 4: are fearful. So here is what I am personally doing
- 10:42Speaker 4: right now. I'm not checking my investment subsessively.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Be for real.
- 10:47Speaker 4: This is just going to lead to me making emotional
- 10:50Speaker 4: decisions and getting stressed, and it's actually.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Not positive at all.
- 10:54Speaker 4: The second thing I'm doing is sticking to my regular
- 10:57Speaker 4: investment plan. If you've set up auto investments, just leave
- 11:01Speaker 4: them alone, let them keep working. This is what we
- 11:04Speaker 4: call dollar cost averaging into the market, and it's actually
- 11:07Speaker 4: low key one of the most powerful wealth building tools
- 11:10Speaker 4: ever because if you are purchasing right now and your
- 11:13Speaker 4: shares are at a discount or they are less than
- 11:16Speaker 4: what you are usually purchasing in for, not only are
- 11:19Speaker 4: they lower in price and you're getting a money in,
- 11:23Speaker 4: but it's actually bringing the average price of your portfolio down.
- 11:27Speaker 4: So if we divided it up over time, every other
- 11:30Speaker 4: purchase you've ever made is coming down as well on average.
- 11:34Speaker 4: The third thing I'm doing is if I have some
- 11:37Speaker 4: extra cash sitting around, actually considering whether or not I
- 11:41Speaker 4: have the capacity to put more into the market, not less,
- 11:44Speaker 4: because my friend, as we're saying before, things are on
- 11:47Speaker 4: sale and I love the money win. The fourth thing
- 11:50Speaker 4: I'm doing is, as always, I am investing for the
- 11:53Speaker 4: long term. If you are on the journey with me
- 11:56Speaker 4: and you're investing for five or ten or even twenty years,
- 12:00Speaker 4: bort term dips don't actually matter over the long term
- 12:04Speaker 4: market trend upwards and listen, I fully understand that this
- 12:08Speaker 4: can feel overwhelming and consuming and really scary. Money is
- 12:13Speaker 4: inherently emotional, But that's exactly why we need to have
- 12:16Speaker 4: plans in place before the market drop happens, because the
- 12:20Speaker 4: worst financial decisions they get made when we're in panic mode.
- 12:24Speaker 4: So here's the takeaway for today. Do not let a
- 12:27Speaker 4: market drop or some scary headlines someone who doesn't know
- 12:30Speaker 4: anything about finance.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Wrote, let you. Of course, the people who build real wealth.
- 12:36Speaker 4: Aren't the ones who are trying to time the market perfectly.
- 12:40Speaker 4: They're the ones who are staying consistent through all of
- 12:43Speaker 4: the market conditions. I've said it before and I will
- 12:45Speaker 4: say it again. If I could time the market, I
- 12:48Speaker 4: would be insanely rich. Unfortunately I can't, So the next
- 12:52Speaker 4: best thing I do is dollar cost averaging. If you're
- 12:56Speaker 4: feeling the urge to sell right now, take a step back,
- 13:00Speaker 4: take a really deep breath, and remind yourself why you
- 13:02Speaker 4: started investing in the first place. Was it for short
- 13:05Speaker 4: term gains or was it to build long term wealth? Because,
- 13:09Speaker 4: my friend, if it was for the latter, then days
- 13:12Speaker 4: like today they're just noise. Remember that every single market
- 13:16Speaker 4: crash and every single correction in history has actually been
- 13:19Speaker 4: followed by a recovery and then new highs, literally every
- 13:23Speaker 4: single one, and I'm fully betting that this time is
- 13:27Speaker 4: not going to be any different. If you want to
- 13:30Speaker 4: feel even more confident about investing through market ups and
- 13:34Speaker 4: then market downs, my friend, now is the perfect time
- 13:37Speaker 4: to check out my investing masterclass. It's designed to help
- 13:41Speaker 4: you build wealth without stressing over market dips, so you
- 13:44Speaker 4: can invest with strategy, not emotion. I'm obviously going to
- 13:48Speaker 4: link that for you in the show notes, but my friends,
- 13:50Speaker 4: that is honestly it from me. That is the rant
- 13:53Speaker 4: of the week. We've covered Trump, We've covered Elon, we
- 13:56Speaker 4: have talked about market dips. What I really want from
- 13:59Speaker 4: you is for you to keep your call when everyone
- 14:02Speaker 4: else is losing theirs and you're all going to be
- 14:04Speaker 4: the one laughing all the way to the bank. I'll
- 14:06Speaker 4: catch you next week for another episode of She's on
