1:42
SPEAKER_05: And welcome to What's your favorite scary movie?

2:22
SPEAKER_05: Caroline and Ian, I have not seen in absolute years, and now they are haunting my computer screen.
2:34
SPEAKER_05: Hi, how are y'all?
2:37
SPEAKER_02: Oh, we're good.
2:39
SPEAKER_02: Peachy, fan frickin' ready to chat about this movie.
2:44
SPEAKER_06: On the water.
2:45
SPEAKER_05: Well, it's been months since anybody's heard a peep from you.
2:49
SPEAKER_05: Any updates for the non-patron listeners who did not get the chance to be blessed by our hocus pocus review at patreon.com slash scary moviepod.
2:59
SPEAKER_06: Oh, that's right.
3:00
SPEAKER_06: This is our first episode on the feed.
3:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and an update for all of you listening, go join our Patreon.
3:07
SPEAKER_02: That's your update.
3:09
SPEAKER_05: And if you heard a little chatter at the beginning about a live Halloween party we're having, tickets for non-patrons, five dollars.
3:16
SPEAKER_05: Tickets for patrons, tickets for patrons.
3:21
SPEAKER_03: Tickens.
3:22
SPEAKER_05: Tickets for patrons, free.
3:24
SPEAKER_05: And if you subscribe at patreon.com slash scary moviepod, five dollars.
3:29
SPEAKER_05: So just do a little math there.
3:31
SPEAKER_05: I think the benefits of just subscribing and getting your tickets through Patreon outweigh.
3:39
SPEAKER_05: Or your tickens.
3:40
SPEAKER_05: Those two.
3:41
SPEAKER_06: When Parker tries to be a tuppins.
3:44
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, my sales skills are off.
3:47
SPEAKER_06: Listen, if you want the best value, you're gonna have to join Patreon because not only do you get access to the live show where you can, you know, hang out with us, dress up, but you're gonna have access to all the other awesome Patreon things as well.
4:03
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and at that party, we're gonna be having critical discussions of House of a Thousand Corpses.
4:08
SPEAKER_05: We're also going to meet each other and have a fun, scary movie community building time.
4:14
SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be an absolute ball.
4:17
SPEAKER_06: Or for the record, meet as an M-E-E-T.
4:21
SPEAKER_05: Don't count on it.
4:24
SPEAKER_05: I was looking outside my window today.
4:27
SPEAKER_05: You know what I saw?
4:29
SPEAKER_05: Orange leaves.
4:32
SPEAKER_04: They changing.
4:34
SPEAKER_04: And you know what that means?
4:36
SPEAKER_04: Fall.
4:36
SPEAKER_04: Autumn.
4:37
SPEAKER_04: Fall, autumn.
4:38
SPEAKER_04: Pumpkin, spice.
4:40
SPEAKER_06: Everything nice.
4:43
SPEAKER_05: Yes.
4:43
SPEAKER_05: And also Halloween.
4:45
SPEAKER_05: And you know what you do at Halloween?
4:48
SPEAKER_02: You kill people.
4:49
SPEAKER_02: No, don't kill people.
4:53
SPEAKER_06: You watch movies and you consume candy.
4:58
SPEAKER_05: You scare people.
5:00
SPEAKER_05: And all of those things.
5:02
SPEAKER_05: Plus, you know what else you do at Halloween?
5:04
SPEAKER_05: You go to haunted houses, is what I was looking for.
5:09
SPEAKER_06: Something I don't do.
5:10
SPEAKER_05: Well, we did this week.
5:12
SPEAKER_05: We visited the one, the only Hellhouse LLC.
5:17
SPEAKER_06: And I have to admit, this is one of those movies in a long while that I was the one that was forcing Caroline to watch.
5:30
SPEAKER_05: Ian, as local business expert, what does LLC mean?
5:35
SPEAKER_02: Limited liability corporation.
5:37
SPEAKER_06: I'm sorry, Caroline.
5:37
SPEAKER_06: I thought that was directed at Ian.
5:40
SPEAKER_02: Why did you ask the man, Parker?
5:43
SPEAKER_05: Sorry, I thought that he was the one who owned a business here.
5:49
SPEAKER_05: I work in business.
5:50
SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, congratulations on the promotion.
5:53
SPEAKER_06: It it it's just uh a way of um having a business entity.
5:59
SPEAKER_05: Well, what an entity it is.
6:00
SPEAKER_05: Well, how else?
6:01
SPEAKER_05: How I promise I've done zero drinking today, but I feel absolutely intoxicated with this movie.
6:08
SPEAKER_05: No, uh, but I was walking through the park listening to the Candyman soundtrack.
6:13
SPEAKER_05: I was just, I don't know, I felt like Bella when she was first turned into a vampire.
6:18
SPEAKER_05: I was looking at the trees and it was just like, oh my god.
6:24
SPEAKER_02: Nature.
6:26
SPEAKER_02: Parker hasn't interacted with humans in a while.
6:30
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, massive trees near where I live, though.
6:33
SPEAKER_05: Anyway, Hellhouse LLC was released on video on demand in the year 2016, only a mere jaunt in the past.
6:42
SPEAKER_05: And since, two sequels have spawned: Hellhouse LLC 2, The Abaddon Hotel, and Hellhouse LLC 3, Lake of Fire.
6:53
SPEAKER_06: Interesting that they do sequels.
6:56
SPEAKER_06: Why wouldn't they have just started with their previous Hellhouses?
7:02
SPEAKER_06: Because now all those people are dead, right?
7:04
SPEAKER_02: So Well, because it it's a smash hit.
7:07
SPEAKER_02: People want more, so they dig in.
7:09
SPEAKER_05: I know, but and exactly, the writer and director of this film, Stephen Cognetti, said that from the beginning he had a vision for a three-act trilogy.
7:20
SPEAKER_05: And so he said he knew where this movie, uh, this trilogy was going from day one.
7:25
SPEAKER_05: So I have seen the second one, but not the third.
7:29
SPEAKER_05: Looking forward to it.
7:30
SPEAKER_05: And Hellhouse LLC was Cognetti's feature debut.
7:34
SPEAKER_05: Wow.
7:35
SPEAKER_05: Congratulations.
7:37
SPEAKER_05: And he also wrote and directed the sequels, which were from 2018 and 2019, respectively.
7:44
SPEAKER_06: And you've seen the second one?
7:46
SPEAKER_06: What did you think?
7:47
SPEAKER_02: Well, what did you think of the first one?
7:49
SPEAKER_02: We have to talk about the first one.
7:50
SPEAKER_05: Oh, before we Caroline, let's hear from you before we really uh shoot our shot on that.
7:56
SPEAKER_02: What I thought.
7:58
SPEAKER_05: No, no, no.
8:00
SPEAKER_02: Oh.
8:01
SPEAKER_05: It's like we haven't done it.
8:02
SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
8:03
SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, I was just so ready.
8:04
SPEAKER_05: We're a little rusty.
8:06
SPEAKER_05: We're gonna have to power spray Caroline.
8:10
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
8:11
SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
8:15
SPEAKER_05: Off the rails.
8:17
SPEAKER_02: Alright.
8:17
SPEAKER_02: We have Ryan Jennifer Jones as Sarah Havill, Jared Hacker as Tony Prescott, Adam Schneider as Andrew McNamara, Danny Bellini as Alex Taylor, Gore Abrams as Paul O'Keefe, and Alice Balkey as Diane Graves.
8:37
SPEAKER_02: Apparently none of them have any noteworthy things to talk about.
8:43
SPEAKER_05: I must admit that I saw nothing that I was particularly interested in on their IMDB sheets.
8:52
SPEAKER_05: And eventually I was just clicking through and I thought, enough of you people.
8:59
SPEAKER_05: So yeah.
9:00
SPEAKER_02: I have to say, I think they kind of hit the nail on the head.
9:02
SPEAKER_02: Like this is a group of peeps coming up from the city into upstate New York.
9:08
SPEAKER_02: And I think that's literally what they did to cast this movie.
9:12
SPEAKER_02: They just brought these peeps.
9:13
SPEAKER_05: They did cast from New York.
9:16
SPEAKER_05: And I do agree.
9:18
SPEAKER_05: It's similar to a movie we'll probably talk about a few times in this episode, but similar to the Blair Witch project, where I think this movie kind of hinges on us not necessarily recognizing faces.
9:31
SPEAKER_05: Which is great for people who don't have the budget to hire Nicole Kidman to star in Hell House LLC.
9:38
SPEAKER_02: Um There really wasn't a star of the show.
9:41
SPEAKER_02: If I had to name a a main character, I don't think I could.
9:45
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
9:45
SPEAKER_05: Ian, let's hear from you.
9:48
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, let's do that.
9:49
SPEAKER_06: So the the IMDB summary is quote Five years after an unexplained malfunction causes the death of 15 tourgoers and staff on the opening night of the Halloween haunted house tour, a documentary crew travels back to the scene of the tragedy to find out what really happened.
10:10
SPEAKER_06: The Rotten Tomatoes average critic rating is seven point eight out of ten.
10:17
SPEAKER_06: The average audience rating is seven point four.
10:24
SPEAKER_06: And the critics' consensus is there's no damn consensus.
10:29
SPEAKER_05: What?
10:30
SPEAKER_05: You know what that means?
10:31
SPEAKER_05: That means that I'm going to have to hear a critic's consensus from both of you.
10:36
SPEAKER_06: Scary movie skeptic.
10:38
SPEAKER_05: Reporting for duty, let's hear it.
10:40
SPEAKER_06: I loved it.
10:43
SPEAKER_02: Period.
10:45
SPEAKER_02: Moving on.
10:47
SPEAKER_05: Nothing else.
10:48
SPEAKER_06: This is just a great scary movie.
10:51
SPEAKER_05: Two very similar statements.
10:53
SPEAKER_06: I can't.
10:54
SPEAKER_06: I I'm a sucker for like reality TV vibes, you know, like documentary style, like this handheld footage.
11:07
SPEAKER_06: This was exactly that.
11:09
SPEAKER_06: But also they just did a great job, in my opinion, of suspense and scares, and really feeding into the psyche of where most people like us are in a mind state during the Halloween season.
11:29
SPEAKER_05: Yes, feed us.
11:30
SPEAKER_05: And I'm actually surprised you did not mention, I believe you have stated that you have a particular affinity for cults?
11:39
SPEAKER_06: Cults.
11:40
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, well, I think if I had to be critical of one thing, I think their uh angle at the cult thing was um elementary at best.
11:51
SPEAKER_06: But damn, I don't think I don't think it had to be a cult for this movie to all work.
11:56
SPEAKER_06: I think they just decided to throw that it's a cult into the like the cult aspect is not the scary part in this movie as it is in like midsummer or any other of those movies.
12:10
SPEAKER_05: And perhaps it's not even a cult, maybe they are just ghosts, and those ghosts happen to be wearing cloaks.
12:17
SPEAKER_06: Sure, I mean you could've you could have left it at like the guy killed himself or was possessed or whatever, or the story that they gave the backstory.
12:28
SPEAKER_05: And left it at that, you didn't need to really say, like, oh but he was a part of this cult and it's fine, but Well, you had mentioned having to force pry Caroline's eyelids open.
12:40
SPEAKER_05: So let's hear from the Scream Queen.
12:42
SPEAKER_05: What do you think?
12:43
SPEAKER_02: I was screaming during this movie.
12:49
SPEAKER_02: Um this hit all of my like top freak out features of a movie.
13:00
SPEAKER_02: It was like because you know, we've all been to a haunted house before sometimes unwillingly, and it's like all of the things that you hate but love about a haunted house just amplified.
13:15
SPEAKER_02: So for me, it was almost like an experience of going to a haunted house.
13:21
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and plus an added level of like creep objects.
13:26
SPEAKER_06: You know a movie's scary when we're 30 seconds in and you had to go outside and you wanted me by the door.
13:34
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
13:36
SPEAKER_02: I also was just like trying to well, the reason he was prying my eyes open, it was like I have to distract myself because I'm so scared right now.
13:43
SPEAKER_02: So I was looking at my phone.
13:44
SPEAKER_06: I was like, you had to put the phone down breaking the rules.
13:47
SPEAKER_06: I know.
13:48
SPEAKER_02: And then I put my phone down and then I was covering my eyes, and he was like pulling my hands away from my eyes to look at it.
13:54
SPEAKER_02: So um, but okay.
13:57
SPEAKER_02: Other element that I loved, there was this added level of like it actually felt like a documentary in the beginning, and like all of the experts that they were interviewing, I was like, these people are the real stars of the show.
14:13
SPEAKER_02: They were great actors.
14:14
SPEAKER_06: I would disagree.
14:16
SPEAKER_02: I uh there was that one guy, I was he was just talking to the camera like he wasn't reading a script at all.
14:23
SPEAKER_02: I it was amazing performance.
14:25
SPEAKER_06: I I will say now that you mentioned that, that is probably the weakest part of the movie.
14:29
SPEAKER_06: No, I loved it.
14:31
SPEAKER_06: I loved it, pulled me right in.
14:33
SPEAKER_06: Is the um especially the interviewer with um what I would say what I would say is the main character, Sarah.
14:41
SPEAKER_05: Um Diane, the reporter.
14:45
SPEAKER_02: He didn't like the performance of Diane, which I would agree with.
14:49
SPEAKER_06: She had a lot it sounded so like forced, acty.
14:53
SPEAKER_02: But what I'm saying is the other there were like talking heads.
14:57
SPEAKER_02: There was the girl yeah, the talking heads in the beginning and like kind of mixed into the middle.
15:02
SPEAKER_02: They were great.
15:02
SPEAKER_06: They were good, but what was really good was the like the found footage of like um well, obviously the found footage of like the events, but also like intermixing the uh emergency response footage, the news coverage, like that was that that seemed real.
15:23
SPEAKER_02: Beautifully done.
15:24
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and you're hitting on something that I also really love about this movie.
15:28
SPEAKER_05: We talked pretty extensively in our episode on the Blair Witch Project, which was a pioneer of kind of the found footage format.
15:36
SPEAKER_05: Um, how people were taken aback by the idea that this was real footage someone had found.
15:45
SPEAKER_05: And whether or not people were actually fooled in thinking that, you know, I can't say because I was not doing this podcast at the time that film came out.
15:55
SPEAKER_05: And I think that since then the the struggle of found footage has been the exact same.
16:01
SPEAKER_05: How do you trick people into thinking that this could be real?
16:05
SPEAKER_05: And to me, this movie I think makes a really good effort at it.
16:10
SPEAKER_05: I think that the idea of having it as a newscast documentary is really effective.
16:16
SPEAKER_05: And like you were saying, having these uh like fake experts and having a hotel that they give you some context about, like they're saying this is a real place where something happened that is unrelated to what you're about to see, but that will be driving the haunting.
16:32
SPEAKER_05: Like there's so many layers uh to it that I think it's really convincing.
16:37
SPEAKER_05: And at the beginning and at the end, they even have like text over it saying what happened before, what happened after.
16:43
SPEAKER_05: Like it just really builds an immersive reality for me, and I loved it.
16:47
SPEAKER_05: I thought that it was really good.
16:49
SPEAKER_05: And the first time I saw it uh a year or two back, I watched it on my laptop in bed, and I had to pause it a few times and just take breathers.
16:57
SPEAKER_05: I was really scared.
17:00
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was yeah.
17:03
SPEAKER_02: They did such a it wasn't corny.
17:04
SPEAKER_02: Like the scene where the guy is like walking through, like looking for his friend, and he's comes up on the clown and it's looking down the basement, and then he looks back and it's looking at him.
17:17
SPEAKER_02: That whole scene, even like going to get his friends and coming back, and like that was the creepiest thing.
17:26
SPEAKER_02: I just and they did such a good job with it.
17:29
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and when they do the exact same trick trick again in the basement where they're like in that weird like safe chamber or whatever, and he shows the clown sitting in the row and they're all looking for it, then he looks away, then he looks back, and they're all looking at him.
17:42
SPEAKER_05: I I yelled aloud.
17:45
SPEAKER_02: I think I think we've talked about this a million times, but it's like that quality of not feeling the need to show the clown moving, which probably would have like detracted from the actual scare, like not showing it just makes it so much scarier.
18:02
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I also I think I talked about this in our episode on The Strangers, but anytime there's something where there's a main focus you're looking at, but you can just see shenanigans going on in the background, always really freaks me out.
18:17
SPEAKER_05: And like there's the scene which it becomes a little bit cheesy, but I still think it's effective when I think his name's Paul, who was the first cameraman, is in bed talking to the camera and you see someone walk into his room and walk out.
18:31
SPEAKER_05: Really scary.
18:32
SPEAKER_05: And even when you do see that that woman who is haunting him, yes, she does look like someone with their Halloween makeup on.
18:41
SPEAKER_05: But the way that they do it is so scary how she keeps getting closer and like he's hiding under the sheets.
18:48
SPEAKER_05: Like, there's reality to that that I think kind of offsets her ridiculousness.
18:54
SPEAKER_02: And like the reason why is because the majority of it you can't see.
18:58
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
18:58
SPEAKER_05: Ian, did you have something to say?
19:00
SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
19:01
SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
19:02
SPEAKER_06: I feel like that moment when he went under the covers is Mr.
19:05
SPEAKER_02: Vice President.
19:06
SPEAKER_02: I'm speaking.
19:07
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
19:09
SPEAKER_06: Really, our relationship in reverse.
19:14
SPEAKER_05: Um Caroline, there's a fly on your head.
19:18
SPEAKER_06: That moment where he went under the covers was like the most.
19:23
SPEAKER_06: I mean, there's some pretty iconic moments in this movie, but that to me, when we were under the covers with him and the breathing, like, that to me was like this feels so realistic in like how any human would cope with this scenario that like I just felt like I was him at that moment when his breathing slowed down on that last time he opened the covers, like like coming down from this adrenaline and like finally opening it and then getting fucked.
19:58
SPEAKER_06: Um I just thought that was what movie did you watch?
20:03
SPEAKER_01: You said we were in the sheets with him?
20:05
SPEAKER_01: What?
20:06
SPEAKER_06: I thought that was just really intense.
20:12
SPEAKER_02: I mean it's found footage, so there's not a lot of like overlay of music, but there was still a theme melody that they had with the piano, which I thought was very genius to do.
20:26
SPEAKER_05: Um that dummy, he got his screen time quite a bit.
20:30
SPEAKER_05: And every time I saw him, I laughed.
20:33
SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
20:34
SPEAKER_05: I think there's some fun, subtle humor in here too.
20:37
SPEAKER_05: Like them being kind of douched dude bros, like some of the jokes like dad puns they were making, I was tickled by a few of them.
20:47
SPEAKER_02: We mentioned this when we went through all the actors, but I did have a hard time distinguishing people, keeping their names straight, what they did, or like how they were all the only ones I remember were Alex, who's the head honcho, and Sarah.
21:07
SPEAKER_05: See, that's funny because I didn't even know Alex.
21:10
SPEAKER_05: I knew Paul, the cameraman, and Sarah because she's the only lady, so that's pretty easy to keep track of.
21:16
SPEAKER_05: I love also that you never really get that good of an idea of the layout of the haunted house.
21:24
SPEAKER_05: And I think that that causes a lot of tension as well because they know the layout of the house.
21:29
SPEAKER_05: So they're just running barreling through camera, just going wild.
21:33
SPEAKER_05: And every time they passed a corner or through a doorway, I would like cover my eyes because they're going through with such determination, and I never know where they are, and if there's going to be something around the corner that's going to get you.
21:46
SPEAKER_05: And I think that that was really, really well constructed.
21:51
SPEAKER_06: Something that frustrated me is the amount of times that they would be scared but not turn on the lights that they um installed.
22:00
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I there were a few times where I was like pretty dark in there, pretty easy to fix.
22:05
SPEAKER_06: One thing that really pissed me off about this was them actually shackling that lady in the basement.
22:12
SPEAKER_06: Like, who in their right mind having a haunted house would actually shackle?
22:17
SPEAKER_05: Well, riddle me this.
22:19
SPEAKER_05: If you were in a haunted house and there was somebody like, you know, chained up, crying, screaming, and you're like, ooh, so scary.
22:27
SPEAKER_05: And then she's like, no, this is not part of the attraction.
22:29
SPEAKER_05: Someone help me.
22:30
SPEAKER_05: What would you do?
22:31
SPEAKER_06: I thought about that.
22:32
SPEAKER_06: I'm like, I don't know.
22:34
SPEAKER_06: That's like the worst position she could be in.
22:37
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because I mean, it's very clear in haunted houses, like, it is a hard rule.
22:41
SPEAKER_05: You do not touch people who are working there.
22:44
SPEAKER_05: And, you know, I would be a little hesitant, like, um, are you just trying to trick me or are you actually in peril?
22:53
SPEAKER_05: And I think that's kind of the fear that all of the haunted house type movies, uh, I know the three of us watched not for the podcast, but last year we watched Haunt, and there are a couple there are quite a few move uh horror movies that take place at haunted houses, and they all touch on this thing about not knowing what's real and what's not, uh, which can be stressful.
23:14
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
23:15
SPEAKER_02: So I have some questions.
23:17
SPEAKER_05: What before you ask questions, I just want to quickly get both of your thoughts on the way that they've constructed kind of a twist ending here where things are supposed to be pretty straightforward because we're watching a documentary, watching things unfold, but then they pull this kind of trick on us where the reporter is like, let's go to the location, and then it says, While she's out, the man editing and viewing the footage sees this secret footage of Sarah dying at the end.
23:47
SPEAKER_05: What'd you think of this kind of uh rug pulling moment?
23:51
SPEAKER_06: I thought it was kind of confusing, like convoluted.
23:54
SPEAKER_06: Were you surprised?
23:55
SPEAKER_02: No, it all it all made sense.
23:57
SPEAKER_02: I don't it wasn't like uh oh my gosh, I can't believe it.
24:02
SPEAKER_02: Because the whole movie we're stuck in the the timeline of the actual events.
24:08
SPEAKER_02: Like, quite honestly, I forgot about the interviewing process.
24:12
SPEAKER_05: I think the thing for me that works well about it is that the way that the footage of Hellhouse ends before that twist, it's kind of like, oh, I guess that was the climax.
24:23
SPEAKER_05: That was a little, you know, I felt like an event hadn't really happened.
24:28
SPEAKER_05: And so I do think that that works for me.
24:30
SPEAKER_05: That like we needed something to latch on to for the ending there, and they did it.
24:34
SPEAKER_05: Um the other thing I like about it is that I watched this film in the company of a date.
24:42
SPEAKER_05: And um, I remember he said at the beginning, he said, Well, we know that girl makes it out alive because she's being interviewed.
24:50
SPEAKER_05: First of all, rookie mistake.
24:53
SPEAKER_01: Rookie.
24:54
SPEAKER_05: But I also then that made me think, like, oh, like that is a good twist because they're kind of surprising us with the one thing that we know as constant, which is that Sarah is alive.
25:06
SPEAKER_05: And I kind of like that they were like, oh gotcha, no, she's not.
25:10
SPEAKER_02: Well, okay, this kind of goes back to one of my questions is how many people actually died?
25:17
SPEAKER_05: The summary said 15.
25:19
SPEAKER_02: That's a lot of people that like we didn't even like what happened.
25:24
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I think they could have done a better job of describing the events.
25:28
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I understand that like that's part of the mystery.
25:32
SPEAKER_02: We never find out, but also like I want to know how big of a news story this is that I'm watching, you know?
25:40
SPEAKER_06: Why did the police cover it up?
25:42
SPEAKER_06: I don't really understand.
25:43
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the police cover-up's a little confusing to me.
25:46
SPEAKER_05: I think that with the deaths, uh, it's a fine line because like there's one guy who's trying to get out the door and the door kind of slams shut and he's trapped, and it's like, well, did he die there?
25:56
SPEAKER_05: Like, there's a few things where we don't necessarily see people die, we just understand that people did die in this event.
26:03
SPEAKER_05: And I wonder how much of that is like, well, we have to be real about what a cameraman would be able to capture.
26:11
SPEAKER_05: And I personally would have suspended my disbelief if they had done something a little less believable to show us a few more deaths.
26:20
SPEAKER_05: Maybe I would have.
26:21
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because all we see is the girl trained up screaming, everyone rushing to get out, and then the two that killed themselves.
26:33
SPEAKER_02: That's it.
26:34
SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
26:36
SPEAKER_02: So that's thirteen more people somewhere in there that like, where are their bodies?
26:41
SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't even know who they are.
26:43
SPEAKER_06: And how they die.
26:44
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, trampled.
26:45
SPEAKER_05: They could have had like a a um coroner's report or something.
26:52
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm not sure.
26:53
SPEAKER_05: What were your other questions?
26:54
SPEAKER_02: Oh wait, Alex.
26:55
SPEAKER_02: Alex hung himself, so that's three.
26:57
SPEAKER_02: Four.
26:58
SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, I guess it's not a question, it's more of like a tell me your opinion.
27:01
SPEAKER_02: Do you think it was actual people that were inflicting these things, or do you think it was a haunting?
27:11
SPEAKER_05: I think the hooded figures are ghosts.
27:13
SPEAKER_05: Um I don't think I think if they're trying to construct this as footage of real things, there's no way that it would be believable that those were real people in those hoods.
27:24
SPEAKER_05: Um, so I think that they're ghosts.
27:26
SPEAKER_05: Uh, probably related to the whole legend of the owner of the hotel killing his guests, I would assume.
27:34
SPEAKER_06: Right.
27:35
SPEAKER_06: I would concur with that premise.
27:38
SPEAKER_05: And I actually do not remember very well the sequel.
27:42
SPEAKER_05: I remember that they do kind of like some round table talks about the footage.
27:48
SPEAKER_05: It's kind of like it's kind of like we're supposed to believe that the documentary we watched in the first movie is the like premier newscast of this footage.
27:56
SPEAKER_05: And so then the sequel, I if I remember correctly, is like experts discussing, and I think they find new footage and things like that, and then I have not seen the third.
28:06
SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, I would hope that maybe the um your knowledge is complete by the finale.
28:13
SPEAKER_06: So it's all all three are you you believe are about this Abaddon?
28:20
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I think so.
28:21
SPEAKER_02: Oh my last question is do you guys want to start a company that puts together haunted houses?
28:30
SPEAKER_06: No.
28:31
SPEAKER_06: And listeners, would you pay to come?
28:35
SPEAKER_02: Actually, that sounds like my worst nightmare.
28:37
SPEAKER_06: I d I hate haunted houses.
28:39
SPEAKER_06: I I once uh stayed in the van when a group of college-aged people went to a haunted house because I did not want to go in.
28:48
SPEAKER_02: You were in college?
28:49
SPEAKER_06: Yes.
28:50
SPEAKER_06: Man, did they make fun of you?
28:52
SPEAKER_02: He's the guy that gets killed first because we all know the person that stays behind.
28:57
SPEAKER_02: I would have made fun of you.
28:58
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, I don't care.
29:01
SPEAKER_05: Actually, I have a little fun fact for you two.
29:04
SPEAKER_05: Feat uh speaking of haunted houses, you can actually go visit the Abaddon Hotel in real life.
29:16
SPEAKER_05: I R L.
29:18
SPEAKER_05: Oh my gosh.
29:19
SPEAKER_05: It is not actually called the Abaddon Hotel, but it is called the Waldorf Estate in Lahiden Lehitton L-E-H-I-G-H-T-O-N Lehitton.
29:32
SPEAKER_05: Leighton Leighton?
29:34
SPEAKER_05: In Leighton, Pennsylvania.
29:36
SPEAKER_05: So when they were looking for a location to film Hellhouse L L C, it was originally supposed to be in a house.
29:44
SPEAKER_05: And they searched the areas around New York City to try and find something authentic, like, oh, these guys and gals really did come from the city to look for this, but they searched High and Low and could not find an abandoned house that really fit the MO.
29:58
SPEAKER_05: So then they started looking at buildings and hotels, and eventually they started looking at uh locations with actual haunted histories, and they settled on the Waldorf estate.
30:13
SPEAKER_05: Now, here is a paraphrase, a little summary I've written of what the Waldorf Estate's website says is the legend of the actual hotel there.
30:22
SPEAKER_05: So in the 50s, a man named Oliver Summersby traveled to Pennsylvania from California and opened up a pub and inn.
30:32
SPEAKER_05: Over the course of 10 years, he tortured and killed at least 25 people, they say.
30:38
SPEAKER_05: His life ended when he murdered the young daughter of a local butcher, and the two men died fighting it out.
30:46
SPEAKER_05: And if you want more deets on how to uh visit the Waldorf Estate, not sponsored, but I just thought I'd share them.
30:54
SPEAKER_05: Uh you can't, it's uh uh the location of the Waldorf Estate of Fear, a haunted house, and they are opened this year for socially distant events.
31:06
SPEAKER_02: Cool.
31:07
SPEAKER_05: So yeah, go walk through the hotel.
31:10
SPEAKER_06: That exact hotel.
31:11
SPEAKER_05: Yep.
31:13
SPEAKER_05: Wow.
31:14
SPEAKER_06: And is it haunted?
31:16
SPEAKER_05: I didn't just tell you that legend for nothing, of course.
31:20
SPEAKER_05: Oh, and I just have one more question.
31:22
SPEAKER_05: If we had, say, started our own LLC to make a haunted house, and we had shown up at our location and some mysterious things had started happening after we had purchased the premises.
31:34
SPEAKER_05: What would your course of action be?
31:37
SPEAKER_02: I'm out, I'm out, I'm out, I'm out.
31:39
SPEAKER_02: I said that during the movie.
31:41
SPEAKER_02: Like before they even had the opening night.
31:44
SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I would have been out of here.
31:46
SPEAKER_05: Would have been out like spaghetti sauce.
31:49
SPEAKER_05: I would need to know how much money I sunk into this place.
31:52
SPEAKER_02: Uh I sure as hell would not be sleeping there.
31:56
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's for sure.
31:59
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I guess it didn't say how far outside of the city it is.
32:02
SPEAKER_05: Like, is it really that bad of a commute where you couldn't just come back and forth?
32:06
SPEAKER_02: Can you imagine sleeping upstairs and being like, oh man, I'm kind of thirsty.
32:10
SPEAKER_02: I needed to go downstairs for some water.
32:12
SPEAKER_02: No.
32:13
SPEAKER_02: And like, are you kidding me?
32:17
SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
32:19
SPEAKER_05: Well, I must ask.
32:21
SPEAKER_05: I must.
32:22
SPEAKER_05: I must.
32:23
SPEAKER_05: I'm dying to know.
32:24
SPEAKER_05: What from Hellhouse LLC would you say is your most memorable murder?
32:31
SPEAKER_05: Muirder.
32:32
SPEAKER_02: Well, they only showed three of the 15, so cheers.
32:38
SPEAKER_05: Imagination, yeah.
32:39
SPEAKER_05: And also you said four earlier.
32:41
SPEAKER_05: What's the truth a caroline?
32:42
SPEAKER_02: Oh, four.
32:43
SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
32:44
SPEAKER_02: Well then the fourth one is mine and it is the girl chained up because they should not have locked her in in IRL.
32:53
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, tragic.
32:54
SPEAKER_06: I think the most memorable one is when Paul where he's just like boom, and you're like not sure what he's doing.
33:02
SPEAKER_06: And then all of a sudden, what's her face falls dead.
33:06
SPEAKER_06: Dead.
33:07
SPEAKER_05: And then it's dragged away.
33:10
SPEAKER_05: I'm going to actually give it to the journalist, um, Diane, because I appreciate I appreciate the effort at tricking me.
33:18
SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
33:19
SPEAKER_05: I was in fact fooled the first time I watched this.
33:22
SPEAKER_05: And so I think that that's a memorable moment.
33:25
SPEAKER_05: You're fooled or what?
33:26
SPEAKER_05: That Sarah was dead the whole time, and that she I mean, by the time she sees her in the hotel room, yes, I had connected the dots because I'm not an absolute dingus, but I had, I was, you know, I think it's an exciting finale.
33:42
SPEAKER_02: I will say, on that finale, when uh she pushes the two C door open and Sarah's just sitting on the bed.
33:51
SPEAKER_02: Ian, I'm bragging on him because he was really into the movie at this point.
33:56
SPEAKER_02: Ian said out loud, chills.
34:02
SPEAKER_06: I don't remember that.
34:04
SPEAKER_01: He did.
34:05
SPEAKER_01: He was so in it.
34:07
SPEAKER_01: That door swung open and he was sitting next to me on the couch and he goes, chills.
34:12
SPEAKER_05: I mean, I knew it was gonna happen, but I love that.
34:19
SPEAKER_05: Um so speaking of chills, on a scary scale, one to five, how would you rate Hellhouse LLC?
34:28
SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm gonna go for it.
34:29
SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna give it a five.
34:30
SPEAKER_02: I was scared.
34:31
SPEAKER_02: Damn it.
34:32
SPEAKER_02: If I was in a movie theater in the dark watching this, that seat would have been wet.
34:41
SPEAKER_05: Wow, sexual idea that you're not used to them.
34:48
SPEAKER_05: It's from that scene when Ian said that uh guy got fucked in the sheets.
34:56
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
34:56
SPEAKER_02: Maybe we're just a little rusty from our break, but this really got me.
35:01
SPEAKER_06: You really picked a good one.
35:03
SPEAKER_02: Oh, thank you.
35:04
SPEAKER_05: Um I directed it to us.
35:06
SPEAKER_06: I think on the spectrum of the movies we've watched on a scary scale, I do have to give it a five.
35:14
SPEAKER_05: I think that makes total sense based off of our conversation.
35:17
SPEAKER_05: I'm going to give it four point five.
35:19
SPEAKER_05: It's not the scariest thing I've ever seen, but I was if I have to take breaks while I'm watching a movie, you know it's something.
35:26
SPEAKER_05: So that leads me to the question: the age old.
35:30
SPEAKER_05: Would you give Hellhouse LLC a smash?
35:34
SPEAKER_05: Or perhaps a very ghostly knifed slash.
35:41
SPEAKER_05: Smash all the way, pumpkin smash.
35:44
SPEAKER_06: Smash, smash, smash.
35:47
SPEAKER_05: It's a smash from me as well.
35:49
SPEAKER_05: I think that this is innovative, scary, well done, well crafted, art, cinema, uh, opulence, life, power, death, uh, nature, not nature, friendship, concrete jungle, Empire City of Mind.
36:09
SPEAKER_02: Money, power, pumpkins.
36:13
SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
36:14
SPEAKER_05: Bringing it back to Halloween.
36:15
SPEAKER_05: I love that, Caroline.
36:16
SPEAKER_05: And on the note of Halloween, what's your favorite scary movie?
36:24
SPEAKER_05: To anyone who has not listened, we have watched Hocus Pocus, the three of us.
36:29
SPEAKER_05: So right now, Caroline and Ian's favorite scary movie sit at Winifred Sanderson Hocus Pocus.
36:36
SPEAKER_02: Well, my favorite movie is Hellhouse LLC.
36:39
SPEAKER_06: My favorite scary movie is Hellhouse L.
36:44
SPEAKER_02: Limited Liability Corporation.
36:46
SPEAKER_06: Had to get that final word in.
36:50
SPEAKER_05: I am absolutely shocked.
36:53
SPEAKER_05: And you know, I think for me, it's the choice of multiple movies.
36:59
SPEAKER_05: My favorite was Halloween 2007, which we covered last week if you did not listen.
37:04
SPEAKER_05: But again, I think I must change.
37:07
SPEAKER_05: My favorite scary movie is Hell House.
37:10
SPEAKER_05: Limited Liability Corporation.
37:14
SPEAKER_05: Love it.
37:16
SPEAKER_05: Alright, well, next time we are watching another Halloween-themed movie, and yet another movie that the first time I watched it, I had to take breaks for different reasons.
37:28
SPEAKER_05: So look forward to Caroline and Ian's spooky return next week when we watch Terrifier.
