- 1:07Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:10Speaker 2: that makes personal finance fun, especially in twenty twenty six.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I'm Victoria Devine and with me are two of the
- 1:17Speaker 2: most fabulous people in the entire world to talk about
- 1:20Speaker 2: money with Miss Jess Grici and Miss Becksayes, And obviously
- 1:25Speaker 2: it's the most fun Friday of the year. It's our
- 1:28Speaker 2: very first episode of twenty twenty six. Happy New Year, Friend,
- 1:33Speaker 2: Happy Year, guys. Crazy.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Now we have to write twenty twenty six on things.
- 1:39Speaker 5: God, I've been preemptively doing it for like three months,
- 1:42Speaker 5: like all over the end of last year, I kept
- 1:43Speaker 5: just writing twenty twenty six on things.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Well, didn't wish your life away? You know, Literally, I'm
- 1:48Speaker 2: living in the past because like my issue was not
- 1:50Speaker 2: that it was writing four on things. Yeah, I'm the same,
- 1:54Speaker 2: I'm just stuck in the past. Anyway, We're going to
- 1:58Speaker 2: be diving headfirst into New Year's energy this year with
- 2:01Speaker 2: this episode, and we're going to be doing things a
- 2:03Speaker 2: little bit differently.
- 2:04Speaker 4: I know.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I shook it up last time because we had our
- 2:06Speaker 2: Christmas episode or our like you know, Boxing Day episode, whatever,
- 2:10Speaker 2: we want to call it, last one of the year. Yeah,
- 2:12Speaker 2: last one of you. And then this is the first
- 2:14Speaker 2: one of the year. And I feel like they have
- 2:15Speaker 2: to be different, right, They can't be the same stock
- 2:17Speaker 2: standard thing that we do each and every year. And
- 2:20Speaker 2: this week we asked our community to very important and
- 2:23Speaker 2: two very big questions. We asked, what was your biggest
- 2:26Speaker 2: money learning last year, and what was the small change
- 2:30Speaker 2: you made that had the biggest impact on your finances?
- 2:34Speaker 2: So I thought that later in the show we would
- 2:36Speaker 2: share those instead of our usual like money wins and
- 2:39Speaker 2: broke tips, so that we can all take like inspiration
- 2:42Speaker 2: from each other, because is that not what community is about?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Absolutely exactly. We'll also always we're not skipping a money dilemma.
- 2:49Speaker 2: We like the juicy stuff, so we're going to be
- 2:51Speaker 2: helping to answer a money dilemma. That's all about being
- 2:54Speaker 2: overwhelmed about where to start when it comes to getting
- 2:57Speaker 2: your finances on track and something that you slid into
- 2:59Speaker 2: our Dmso what do you do when you realize your
- 3:01Speaker 2: friends are kind of toxic when it comes to money
- 3:04Speaker 2: and maybe you've outgrown them? How do you deal with that? Oh,
- 3:07Speaker 2: trick you on, I've outgrown friends. I feel like I
- 3:09Speaker 2: have some advice on this, and I don't know about you,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but this is honestly one of my favorite times of
- 3:14Speaker 2: the year. And it's honestly not because everyone needs to
- 3:17Speaker 2: drastically change because the calendar flipped over to a new year,
- 3:20Speaker 2: like it's not a new year, new me vibe, like
- 3:22Speaker 2: we don't do that. You could change at any point
- 3:25Speaker 2: in time. But I feel like there's like lots of
- 3:27Speaker 2: hope and inspiration in the air, Like we're all talking
- 3:30Speaker 2: about fresh starts and new beginnings, and everyone seems so
- 3:34Speaker 2: much more open to embracing change when the calendar flips.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I love it. I love a new union.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I know I want to be like you can change
- 3:42Speaker 2: any time. But also like there's just like extra winds,
- 3:46Speaker 2: like the pep in your step, and I feel like
- 3:48Speaker 2: we should make the most of it. And I feel
- 3:49Speaker 2: like people are happy to start doing the work that
- 3:52Speaker 2: is going to put themselves in a better position than
- 3:54Speaker 2: they were the year before, and we should capitalize on that.
- 3:57Speaker 2: We do financially, but also for you guy, financially, we
- 4:00Speaker 2: should be like pumping the content that puts you in
- 4:02Speaker 2: a position that is the best position of your life.
- 4:06Speaker 2: So because of that, we know that we get And
- 4:09Speaker 2: this is like one of my favorite things ever. If
- 4:12Speaker 2: you look at the She's on the Money podcast listeners,
- 4:14Speaker 2: every year, our biggest spike in listeners is January, and
- 4:18Speaker 2: the reason for that is people are ready to change,
- 4:21Speaker 2: and we get a whole heap of new friends joining
- 4:24Speaker 2: the show. So if you're new here, Ah, welcome to
- 4:27Speaker 2: the club. Welcome next to me, Welcome, we love you,
- 4:31Speaker 2: we cannot wait to show you what we are all about.
- 4:33Speaker 2: And also welcome to what we sometimes deem a little
- 4:36Speaker 2: bit of a cult.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I'm ready to have you in it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: You're in, or maybe you've rejoined us, maybe you haven't
- 4:43Speaker 2: listened in a while and you've just decided, you know
- 4:45Speaker 2: what I need to get back on track. I'm going
- 4:47Speaker 2: to jump back into She's on the Money, which is
- 4:48Speaker 2: what we see a lot. Welcome back, my friends, come back.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Come because you like exactly, we don't mind. Doors always open.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Welcome back, and know that you are always welcome in
- 4:56Speaker 2: the She's on the Money community. So I wanted to
- 5:00Speaker 2: start this show off by asking everyone what do you want?
- 5:04Speaker 2: And everyone, I mean you Beck and you Jess. There's
- 5:08Speaker 2: so many people. What do you want our new listeners
- 5:10Speaker 2: to know about Cheese on the Money or even just
- 5:12Speaker 2: remind our existing very loyal community.
- 5:15Speaker 3: About we have so many fantastic free resources. I feel
- 5:18Speaker 3: like free stuff.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Over the years, the team have really built up so
- 5:22Speaker 5: many you We've got budget templates, we've got the savings hacks.
- 5:24Speaker 3: We've got you need it, we got it. Maybe like
- 5:27Speaker 3: that's what I'm gonna say.
- 5:28Speaker 5: And we actually just put up a blog post yesterday
- 5:30Speaker 5: with a bunch of links to all the different things.
- 5:33Speaker 5: So if you are going TLDR, don't want to scroll
- 5:36Speaker 5: to find the best stuff, we've done it for you.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Maybe we've hand picked it.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Yeah, maybe I'm public in the show notes, so you
- 5:41Speaker 5: can go have a look at that. But there is
- 5:43Speaker 5: just so much good stuff there. We spend a lot
- 5:45Speaker 5: of time working on our designed here are incredible, and
- 5:48Speaker 5: I think that there's something for literally everyone, no matter
- 5:51Speaker 5: what your goal is for the year, We've got a
- 5:53Speaker 5: resource that will help you.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, there's so many of them on our website
- 5:57Speaker 2: that are free. Like, yes, when we redid our website,
- 6:00Speaker 2: so we rebranded halfway through last year, just as context
- 6:03Speaker 2: for people who might be new, Like if you're like, oh,
- 6:05Speaker 2: I think I've heard of this show, but it looks different,
- 6:07Speaker 2: we do. We've had a bit of a glow up.
- 6:09Speaker 2: We finally could afford a rebrand or her. But we're
- 6:12Speaker 2: going through that, and I was like, go, what the hell, Like,
- 6:15Speaker 2: there are savings trackers, there are budget templates, there are
- 6:17Speaker 2: links to so many different free things, and I actually
- 6:22Speaker 2: didn't realize how out of control it had gotten because
- 6:24Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, well, just and I say this all
- 6:25Speaker 2: the time on the show, We'll just make this and
- 6:27Speaker 2: pop it on the website, and then our whole team,
- 6:29Speaker 2: like Victoria, stop promising things because we actually have to
- 6:32Speaker 2: then put them on the internet. But Beck, what do
- 6:36Speaker 2: you think is something that you really want our existing
- 6:38Speaker 2: community that we know and love but also new friends
- 6:41Speaker 2: to know about. She's on the money.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I feel like I said something similar before, but I
- 6:44Speaker 3: think that it is really helpful to know that. I
- 6:47Speaker 3: don't think it matters where you are in your journey
- 6:50Speaker 3: and who you are and what your background is, whether
- 6:54Speaker 3: there are parts of your identity that make making money harder,
- 6:58Speaker 3: or you are in a better position, or you've kind
- 7:01Speaker 3: of started life in a better position. It doesn't matter
- 7:03Speaker 3: where you're coming from. This community is for you, and
- 7:06Speaker 3: it can be very hard to kind of get out
- 7:08Speaker 3: of that mindset of being like, my situation is different,
- 7:11Speaker 3: my situation is harder. If you take all the information
- 7:14Speaker 3: that is available to you, you can tailor it to
- 7:16Speaker 3: your own specific needs. So everyone's welcomed here and you
- 7:20Speaker 3: will find things that are helpful no matter no matter
- 7:23Speaker 3: who you are yeah, oh, thank you as the episode there,
- 7:28Speaker 3: Actually that's what we do.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Mine's not as good as that. That's really wholesome.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Thank you such a way.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, thank you guys. I was kind of
- 7:37Speaker 2: all thank you for that from me, like, yes, the
- 7:40Speaker 2: community that we built together, true, we obsessed. All right,
- 7:45Speaker 2: Well mine's not as exciting, but it's also very exciting.
- 7:47Speaker 2: So my like thing that I want you guys to
- 7:50Speaker 2: know about is the summer series that I've just put together.
- 7:54Speaker 2: So one thing I adore about making money content is
- 7:57Speaker 2: that the foundations are always exactly the same. And I
- 8:01Speaker 2: don't know if you have been tracking these, beck you
- 8:03Speaker 2: probably haven't because you just couldn't care less. You just
- 8:06Speaker 2: come here to yap and have a really good time.
- 8:08Speaker 2: But we have nearly a thousand episodes. If she's on
- 8:10Speaker 2: the money, that's insane.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Mind bubbling one.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Thousand, isn't that insane? Yeah, it's a lot of talking,
- 8:16Speaker 2: and we're actually going to hit that milestone this year.
- 8:19Speaker 2: So I've worked out when we're going to hit it,
- 8:21Speaker 2: and there will be celebrations. Yeah, we will have a party.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I don't know, but we will have a thousandth something party.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And if you scroll back to our very first episode,
- 8:31Speaker 2: which might take you a little bit of time now apologies,
- 8:35Speaker 2: you'll get something out of it. So this January, we
- 8:38Speaker 2: are going to do something really different. I think a
- 8:40Speaker 2: lot of people really want to start at the start,
- 8:41Speaker 2: but that can be overwhelming with so many episodes floating around.
- 8:45Speaker 2: So this is something that I'm calling our summer starter series,
- 8:49Speaker 2: and I've gone back through our entire archive and I've
- 8:52Speaker 2: found our best episodes for those of you who really
- 8:55Speaker 2: want to start the year the right way. But when
- 8:56Speaker 2: you look at the shees on the Money catalog, you're like,
- 8:59Speaker 2: that's so overwhelming. There's so much Where do I even start?
- 9:02Speaker 2: Which is a very valid question. So the first one
- 9:05Speaker 2: drops tomorrow and it's a good one and the perfect
- 9:07Speaker 2: first week of the year episode. So if you are
- 9:10Speaker 2: new again, shameless, but like, can you please hit subscribe
- 9:14Speaker 2: so that it pops up in your feed tomorrow and
- 9:16Speaker 2: that you can have your finger on the pulse. And
- 9:19Speaker 2: I would say it's the perfect thing for your twenty
- 9:21Speaker 2: twenty six money resolutions. Also resolutions, do you guys set them?
- 9:25Speaker 2: Are we setting resolutions this year?
- 9:27Speaker 3: Are we doing that?
- 9:28Speaker 2: Are we changing things? Are we putting new rules in place.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I don't know loosely.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I think it's more like I write a letter to
- 9:34Speaker 3: myself on things that I want to maintain.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Do you actually I do. I write myself and you
- 9:40Speaker 2: just become more and more my favorite person time. Every
- 9:43Speaker 2: time you talk, I'm like, look how cute she is? Though,
- 9:46Speaker 2: Oh my god, Okay, this year is really a good start.
- 9:50Speaker 2: It's a really good start.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 9:53Speaker 3: It's incredible. I do write a letter to myself. I write,
- 9:55Speaker 3: like where I'm sitting, I'll explain the situation, what I'm feeling,
- 9:59Speaker 3: what I want to maintain. It's all just very like
- 10:01Speaker 3: low not like not not hard to achieve, but it
- 10:06Speaker 3: is just my mentality and what I want to feel
- 10:10Speaker 3: emotionally at the end of the year.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Do you know what I mean?
- 10:13Speaker 3: Yes, that's kind of what it is. What's on the list?
- 10:17Speaker 3: Oh yes, she's like no private by that's okay if
- 10:20Speaker 3: it is knowing not at all. I just like, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 3: I want to like maintain connections with friends, and I
- 10:26Speaker 3: want to like build new connections with new friends or
- 10:29Speaker 3: strengthen old ones or whatever. And then if I'm right
- 10:32Speaker 3: now feeling really happy or if I'm not, I would
- 10:35Speaker 3: like to feel super happy, super content, super proud of myself.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Whatever that looks like, go to the gym, because that
- 10:41Speaker 3: will equate to like me feeling good about myself, you know.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I think it's more about like feeling I want to
- 10:46Speaker 3: be feeling, so just that kind of thing. Yeah, that's
- 10:49Speaker 3: so good. So I suppose they are resolutions. Yeah, but
- 10:52Speaker 3: you can call what if you want in like a
- 10:54Speaker 3: round about way. I call my goals like goals.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Not that it's any different really, but I always have
- 10:58Speaker 5: like a list of goals and I don't want to
- 10:59Speaker 5: work towards and I think.
- 11:00Speaker 2: A lot of the guys just just brought up her
- 11:02Speaker 2: notes section on her phone.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Yes, that's really sweet. I'm a visual person.
- 11:07Speaker 5: I think like a lot of my goals for this
- 11:08Speaker 5: year will carry over from last year because they were
- 11:11Speaker 5: like really good and like some of them I made
- 11:13Speaker 5: some of them I didn't, and that's totally okay. I
- 11:15Speaker 5: think a lot of the ones that I want to
- 11:16Speaker 5: really focus on are related to like health and balance
- 11:19Speaker 5: and stuff. I think I'm someone who gets so caught
- 11:22Speaker 5: up in the things that I'm doing that I don't
- 11:24Speaker 5: always make time for the important stuff. So like hit
- 11:27Speaker 5: my ten k steps a day, or you know, I
- 11:30Speaker 5: want to go to at least two pilates classes a week.
- 11:33Speaker 5: This one I failed at so badly last year. Single
- 11:35Speaker 5: digit screen time because my screen time is horrifically embarrassing.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Work for a social media company. I appreciate that that's
- 11:45Speaker 2: on you imagine Kiar as social media time, I would
- 11:48Speaker 2: be through the roofs.
- 11:50Speaker 5: Yeah, Like things like that that are You're just little
- 11:53Speaker 5: reminders for myself, like, oh, if you don't meet it,
- 11:56Speaker 5: it's not the end of the world. And I really
- 11:57Speaker 5: try not to set goals that I don't think achievable,
- 12:00Speaker 5: but just things that are I think that would help
- 12:02Speaker 5: me to improve how I feel day to day.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Yeah, how about you. I love that. I don't know,
- 12:07Speaker 2: I haven't written down a list of goals. I want
- 12:10Speaker 2: to do, not more, but I want to do better
- 12:14Speaker 2: at the stuff that we already do, so go deeper
- 12:17Speaker 2: on that. So like I want to do more investing content,
- 12:20Speaker 2: but I want to go deeper, Like I'm not going
- 12:22Speaker 2: to like start a new podcast, but does that make sense?
- 12:25Speaker 2: So I want to do what we're doing well now,
- 12:27Speaker 2: but like take it to the next level and do better.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I think from a professional perspective. I have been thinking
- 12:34Speaker 2: about this for a really long time, and I don't
- 12:35Speaker 2: know if I want to verbalize it because I feel
- 12:37Speaker 2: like it puts you you or me in a place
- 12:39Speaker 2: where I now have to back it up. But it's
- 12:41Speaker 2: a conversation I've been having, probably for the last eighteen
- 12:44Speaker 2: months with my husband, with our team on and off.
- 12:47Speaker 2: I really want to do a PhD. I really want
- 12:50Speaker 2: to go back to university. I don't know how I'm
- 12:53Speaker 2: going to manage that, but we just have this epic
- 12:55Speaker 2: community here and she's on the money that give us
- 12:59Speaker 2: so much data and so much information, and I'm just
- 13:02Speaker 2: really hoping that I could potentially build Australia's largest long
- 13:06Speaker 2: term study on women and money and to have this
- 13:09Speaker 2: epic resource that is so gritty and so helpful and
- 13:14Speaker 2: can be used in so many different ways, one for
- 13:17Speaker 2: my PhD and the thesis that I would write, but
- 13:19Speaker 2: to like that type of research would drive real lasting
- 13:24Speaker 2: change and be really really powerful. And I've been thinking
- 13:28Speaker 2: about it for so long and being in the position
- 13:30Speaker 2: that I'm in, I'm able to do a PhD and
- 13:33Speaker 2: be completely self funded, and I just think that would
- 13:36Speaker 2: be really really cool. That's really cool. So I guess
- 13:39Speaker 2: that's a personal and professional. Also, when I finish it,
- 13:43Speaker 2: I could call myself doctor Dede. I think it's really cool.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Like if anyone on an aeroplane goes we need a doctor,
- 13:49Speaker 2: I won't be the one, but like you know, I
- 13:52Speaker 2: feel like having your mail with doctor at the start.
- 13:56Speaker 2: That's what go cool. Financially, it's just consistency, like I'll
- 14:00Speaker 2: keep up my automated investments. I'll just keep things tracking along.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I would say I want to budget better, but like
- 14:06Speaker 2: I'm pretty good at that now, but I always want
- 14:08Speaker 2: to have my finger on the pulse with that so that,
- 14:10Speaker 2: like you know, lifestyle creep doesn't get too far out
- 14:14Speaker 2: of control. And then I guess personally, like I just
- 14:18Speaker 2: like Jess, I want to keep my body strong. I
- 14:19Speaker 2: want to be more consistent, and do you know what,
- 14:21Speaker 2: I'd really love to grow in my family, Like I
- 14:24Speaker 2: really love another little Harvey. So we'll see where that
- 14:27Speaker 2: takes us. Beautiful, but now away from us and back
- 14:31Speaker 2: into our community and our listeners. This is the part
- 14:33Speaker 2: of the episode where we usually share our community money
- 14:36Speaker 2: wins and confessions, and then Bex broke tips. But in
- 14:39Speaker 2: keeping with the new year's energy. For this episode, we
- 14:41Speaker 2: asked for your biggest financial learnings from the last year
- 14:44Speaker 2: and the small changes that you made that made the
- 14:46Speaker 2: biggest impact to your finances. Jess has a list I
- 14:49Speaker 2: should do. What were the community's biggest money learnings from
- 14:53Speaker 2: this year.
- 14:53Speaker 5: There's many good ones, starting off with Marina, who said
- 14:56Speaker 5: spending more on groceries that she actually wanted to eat
- 15:00Speaker 5: and liked dramatically reduced the overall food spending because she's
- 15:05Speaker 5: less likely to get takeaway that's or by lunches at
- 15:07Speaker 5: work or out to the shops for snacks and treats.
- 15:10Speaker 5: She said she estimates that she saved around three thousand
- 15:13Speaker 5: dollars in last year alone.
- 15:15Speaker 3: What that's a great But.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Also that is a fantastic tip because they're always talking
- 15:19Speaker 2: about like bringing our groceries budget down, not up. But
- 15:22Speaker 2: if you brought it up and it's full of stuff
- 15:24Speaker 2: that you really like eating, you're not like, oh oh
- 15:27Speaker 2: uber eats the pizza.
- 15:27Speaker 3: You like absolutelyster in the fridge.
- 15:29Speaker 2: And yes it was like the fancy like rigatoni or
- 15:32Speaker 2: whatever that you brought from the fresh section, but like
- 15:34Speaker 2: that's way cheaper. Yes, yes, very very that's smart. I
- 15:38Speaker 2: love it.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Next Sarah said that time in the market is better
- 15:41Speaker 5: than time out of the market. Slow and steady investments work.
- 15:45Speaker 5: That is exactly what you learned.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Okay, Sarah, you are She's on the Money Integrated member.
- 15:50Speaker 5: On the same page, Indigo Beautiful Name shared her investing
- 15:54Speaker 5: learning as well, and she said that regular investing, even
- 15:57Speaker 5: five dollars a fortnight, helps her to feel more confident
- 16:00Speaker 5: about her financial future.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I con cregiate it brilliant.
- 16:03Speaker 5: Next Beack Excellent Name said getting clear on your money
- 16:06Speaker 5: values is so important because when you spend in line
- 16:09Speaker 5: with your values, rather than just trying to cut everything out,
- 16:12Speaker 5: everything just becomes easier. Adore gorgeous Rihanna said working on
- 16:16Speaker 5: her mental health means working on her money.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Yes, a man say it louder.
- 16:21Speaker 5: She said she's saved so much money this year because
- 16:23Speaker 5: she's in a better place mentally and emotionally and doesn't
- 16:26Speaker 5: feel the need to rely on her unhealthy coping mechanism
- 16:29Speaker 5: of online shopping. She still buys clothes online, but now
- 16:32Speaker 5: it's a conscious decision rather than a blind impulse.
- 16:35Speaker 2: The door and the tie between mental health and money
- 16:38Speaker 2: is insane, very strong.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Absolutely, and then lastly, Pippett said, finding communities where I
- 16:45Speaker 5: feel safe and understood has helped me to grow so
- 16:47Speaker 5: much as a person. Spaces like SATM, fire and neurodivergent
- 16:51Speaker 5: communities have made me happier and opened me up to
- 16:54Speaker 5: the new ideas and opportunities I never would have considered before.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Oh beautiful, yes, adore all right, I feel like that
- 17:03Speaker 2: is a very good wrap. Chess over to you, Beck,
- 17:06Speaker 2: What small changes did our community make last year that
- 17:08Speaker 2: made a big impact on their finances?
- 17:11Speaker 3: So well, thank you for asking. I do have a
- 17:13Speaker 3: few here, so Indigo said. Instead of directing what I
- 17:17Speaker 3: had left over to debt, I prioritized putting twenty percent
- 17:20Speaker 3: of my income to it non negotiable and then did
- 17:24Speaker 3: my budget off the rest I ended up paying off
- 17:26Speaker 3: debt I thought was insurmountable.
- 17:29Speaker 2: That's a good word.
- 17:30Speaker 3: That is a good one, and that is a good strategy,
- 17:32Speaker 3: and it's a good strategy that love then be this
- 17:36Speaker 3: is a great name, Beck and.
- 17:38Speaker 2: An Indigo twice.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Now a lot of Beck's in the new year, and
- 17:42Speaker 3: the Indigos turns out, so reaching out to Zella, finding
- 17:46Speaker 3: out that I can actually afford to buy and putting
- 17:48Speaker 3: a plan in place to buy my first home next year.
- 17:51Speaker 2: That's a good idea. You should definitely reach out to
- 17:53Speaker 2: Zeller if you want to buy in the next twelve months.
- 17:55Speaker 2: We've got your back absolutely well. So thanks for picking
- 17:58Speaker 2: that one, just a little stroke for me. Yeah, for
- 18:01Speaker 2: those of you playing along who might be new here,
- 18:03Speaker 2: we're excited about that because I own a mortgage broking
- 18:06Speaker 2: business called Zella and we just love getting first home
- 18:10Speaker 2: buyers into the market. It's literally our passion and what
- 18:13Speaker 2: we work so hard for. So in the background, guys,
- 18:15Speaker 2: I'm actually allegit financial yeah crazy, and that you.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Wouldn't believe it.
- 18:21Speaker 2: I don't.
- 18:22Speaker 3: The sext one comes from Sarah, who says automating direct
- 18:25Speaker 3: debit to investments so I no longer have to decide. Yeah,
- 18:28Speaker 3: it's I.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Feel like vituralist. This paralysis happens.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Then agreed, agreed, agreed. Next one comes from Ilana, who says,
- 18:35Speaker 3: set up proper auto payments for every single one of
- 18:38Speaker 3: my bills like my rates, electricity, and water with sufficient
- 18:42Speaker 3: amounts has meant I now actually pay my bills before
- 18:45Speaker 3: they occur, and the most day, oh when I get
- 18:47Speaker 3: the bill is a couple dollars it's been life changing.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Knowing I'm covered all the time. That is so free,
- 18:53Speaker 3: That is so freeing. If you do have that little
- 18:55Speaker 3: bit of extra money, then it's a great idea. This
- 18:57Speaker 3: last one is from Sarah, who says she's added asking
- 19:00Speaker 3: herself if it's a want or a need and leaving
- 19:03Speaker 3: things in her cart for forty eight hours, which is
- 19:06Speaker 3: very Victoria di Vine double our recommended window, well done,
- 19:10Speaker 3: double it. I love it.
- 19:12Speaker 4: I love it.
- 19:13Speaker 2: I feel like that's why at the start I said
- 19:15Speaker 2: it's a little bit of a cult. You're not running
- 19:17Speaker 2: a proper cult because we haven't worked out how to
- 19:19Speaker 2: get you guys in and do all the trappy part.
- 19:22Speaker 2: But like you will find that the terms that we use,
- 19:26Speaker 2: the references that are U, they just kind of slip
- 19:29Speaker 2: into your daily life. And that's what we want.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Leave a comment if you're listening on Spotify, and tell
- 19:34Speaker 5: us what your favorite catchphrase that we say all the
- 19:36Speaker 5: time is.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Because so many so attached a funny way, I will
- 19:40Speaker 2: hear you. All Right, let's go to a really quick
- 19:44Speaker 2: break and when we come back, we'll be helping to
- 19:45Speaker 2: addser money dilemma. That's all about being overwhelmed about where
- 19:48Speaker 2: to start when you need to get your finances on
- 19:50Speaker 2: track and something you slid into Our dms about what
- 19:52Speaker 2: do you do when you realize your friends are kind
- 19:54Speaker 2: of toxic when it comes to money.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 20:02Speaker 3: money dilemma.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 20:12Speaker 2: can't solve? The She's on the Money team is here
- 20:14Speaker 2: to help. Every week, we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 20:18Speaker 2: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 20:20Speaker 2: life questions.
- 20:21Speaker 6: To get involved, simply head to our website and leave
- 20:24Speaker 6: us a short voice recording and you might just find
- 20:26Speaker 6: yourself on the show.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Now, let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Hey, Victoria and the team. I'm just switching out because
- 20:37Speaker 4: I have a bit of a money dilemma. It's kind
- 20:40Speaker 4: of a big one. I've just separated from my partner.
- 20:45Speaker 4: We've been married for eighteen years, we have two beautiful kids,
- 20:50Speaker 4: and we're just starting to like get the divorce sorted.
- 20:55Speaker 4: But he has managed our finances for the past eighteen years,
- 20:59Speaker 4: and I am now having to manage my own and
- 21:04Speaker 4: I have no clue what I'm doing. I've managed to
- 21:07Speaker 4: say a little bit and I've tried to do a budget,
- 21:12Speaker 4: but I just can't seem to stick to it. And yeah,
- 21:16Speaker 4: I really need some guidance. I know you've got an
- 21:19Speaker 4: amazing podcast. I've listened to a bunch of those episodes,
- 21:23Speaker 4: but it's a bit overwhelming. I don't really know where
- 21:26Speaker 4: to start other than going back and listening to every
- 21:29Speaker 4: single podcast. I am time poor though, because I am
- 21:33Speaker 4: studying and working three jobs, and I would just love
- 21:37Speaker 4: some advice. So yes, I saw that you've got a
- 21:42Speaker 4: course as well, So I don't know. Maybe that's where
- 21:45Speaker 4: I should start, but yeah, you could let me know.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Am I allowed to jump in first? Of course? I
- 21:50Speaker 2: feel very passionate about this because I feel like you're
- 21:53Speaker 2: doing all of the right things, all of the things
- 21:55Speaker 2: that we suggest. We do have a podcast, we do
- 21:57Speaker 2: have rebudgeting tips and tricks, but you actually need to
- 22:00Speaker 2: zoom out, put us to the side, completely, sit down,
- 22:03Speaker 2: what do you want? I feel like there were lots
- 22:05Speaker 2: of and this is not criticism, but there was lots
- 22:08Speaker 2: of I don't know what I want, I don't know
- 22:10Speaker 2: where I'm starting, and that's telling me that you are
- 22:13Speaker 2: lacking clarity. What are your life goals? What do you
- 22:15Speaker 2: want to achieve? Is that financial freedom?
- 22:17Speaker 1: Is it?
- 22:18Speaker 2: You know, paying off debt? Like there was a lot
- 22:20Speaker 2: of things that I was like, Oh, I want to
- 22:21Speaker 2: dive into that and get more clarity on this. But
- 22:23Speaker 2: it really feels like you're lacking a bit of clarity
- 22:26Speaker 2: in your life. How can you stick to a budget
- 22:28Speaker 2: when you've got no motivation to do so? Like, what's
- 22:31Speaker 2: the point in sticking to a budget when you just
- 22:32Speaker 2: don't even know why you're doing it? You're like, oh,
- 22:34Speaker 2: I kind of know that I should be doing this.
- 22:36Speaker 2: It's like I want to get my stuff together. You're
- 22:38Speaker 2: clearly a hustler. You work three jobs and you're studying
- 22:42Speaker 2: queen what Like, I just think, sit down with yourself
- 22:45Speaker 2: and have a good hard chap, Like, ask yourself the
- 22:47Speaker 2: question why do I want to budget? Like answer that
- 22:50Speaker 2: it's going to be different for everybody. I think it's
- 22:53Speaker 2: about this personal clarification and then we can come in
- 22:56Speaker 2: with the tools and the resources to help you get there.
- 22:58Speaker 2: But you're the one that needs to show up with
- 22:59Speaker 2: the motive and the understanding of why you want to
- 23:02Speaker 2: make change, of why you want to be in this position.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Why do you want to create wealth? Why do you
- 23:07Speaker 2: want to budget? Why do you want to understand your
- 23:09Speaker 2: cash flow? Why the hell would you care about your superannuation?
- 23:12Speaker 2: And it might all come back to, Okay, I really
- 23:14Speaker 2: want to set myself up for the future, or you
- 23:16Speaker 2: might say I really want to when I you know,
- 23:17Speaker 2: am finished? You need buy a house? What does that
- 23:19Speaker 2: look like? Or I want to be able to travel like.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Everyone's going to have different motivations, But baby cakes, what's yours?
- 23:26Speaker 5: Like?
- 23:26Speaker 2: We need to actually double down and understand why do
- 23:29Speaker 2: you want to hang out with us? What about your
- 23:32Speaker 2: life is giving you stress? What about your situation needs
- 23:35Speaker 2: to change? Because once you've got that, then we can
- 23:38Speaker 2: give you the tools and resources and it feels good
- 23:40Speaker 2: to use them as opposed to I did a budget,
- 23:43Speaker 2: but I don't really look at it like that makes sense.
- 23:46Speaker 2: We need to find the motivation, Jessica, what would you do?
- 23:48Speaker 3: Oh, I'm just firs.
- 23:49Speaker 5: I'm really sorry that you're going through this. I think
- 23:52Speaker 5: it's really it's a tough situation. And this way we
- 23:54Speaker 5: always recommend it, even if you're not the partner who
- 23:56Speaker 5: looks after the finance primarily to make sure that you're
- 23:59Speaker 5: kind of across the ins and outs, but it can
- 24:01Speaker 5: be really confronting for you. After eighteen years, I can
- 24:04Speaker 5: understand that it would feel really overwhelming, and so I
- 24:07Speaker 5: want to validate that you're doing a good job. In
- 24:10Speaker 5: the sense of the fact that you're looking at everything
- 24:12Speaker 5: and wanting to improve is a fantastic thing. I think
- 24:16Speaker 5: that from the budgeting side of things, if you haven't
- 24:18Speaker 5: tried the shoes on the money free budget template, that
- 24:20Speaker 5: is a really good place to start. We also have
- 24:22Speaker 5: a great episode called budget Like a Boss that goes
- 24:25Speaker 5: over like the ins and outs of you Victoria's recommended
- 24:28Speaker 5: system and how you can make that all work. If
- 24:30Speaker 5: you have done all of those things, Like you said,
- 24:32Speaker 5: you had a budget and the problem you're having is
- 24:34Speaker 5: you're not sticking to it. I think you need to
- 24:36Speaker 5: look at why that is. Are you not sticking to
- 24:39Speaker 5: the budget because the budget you've created is unrealistic and
- 24:41Speaker 5: so you've given yourself one hundred dollars a week for groceries,
- 24:45Speaker 5: but for you and the kids, it's actually one hundred
- 24:47Speaker 5: and fifty dollars. Because if we're unrealistic in what we
- 24:50Speaker 5: allocate in our budget, the budget is never going to work.
- 24:53Speaker 5: So it's either you haven't allocated funds correctly or your
- 24:57Speaker 5: impulse control needs work. And we're buying things maybe that
- 25:00Speaker 5: we shouldn't or going out for dinners that we shouldn't.
- 25:03Speaker 5: I don't know which the answer is for you, but
- 25:05Speaker 5: take a look and figure it out. If it is
- 25:07Speaker 5: that second option, if you are maybe spending a little
- 25:09Speaker 5: bit more than you should. A bit of tough love
- 25:12Speaker 5: for anyone who is in the same situation. We don't
- 25:15Speaker 5: need to have or do everything, I think, especially for
- 25:18Speaker 5: you right now in this season of change, you may
- 25:21Speaker 5: just have to strip back to the bare bones.
- 25:23Speaker 3: And I know that that's probably going to be hard.
- 25:24Speaker 5: To navigate when you've got the kids and you don't
- 25:26Speaker 5: want their lifestyle to feel like it changes. But you
- 25:29Speaker 5: also need to give yourself grace, and there may be
- 25:32Speaker 5: a period of time where, given how much work that
- 25:34Speaker 5: you're doing in your study and all of these things,
- 25:37Speaker 5: you can have everything that you want, but not all
- 25:38Speaker 5: at once. As Victoria likes to say, and I think.
- 25:40Speaker 2: That you need that's a quote you could put in
- 25:42Speaker 2: a god.
- 25:42Speaker 3: That's one of my personal favorites.
- 25:44Speaker 2: I think.
- 25:46Speaker 5: I think that you need to maybe just pull it
- 25:48Speaker 5: back as far as you can to the bare bones,
- 25:50Speaker 5: and also give yourself permission.
- 25:52Speaker 3: To do that. Mmmm, that's a really your point. I
- 25:55Speaker 3: am the same as you. Just I'm firstly, really really sorry.
- 25:59Speaker 3: This sounds like a really feel.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Bad that I just dove in and said find meaning
- 26:02Speaker 2: and purpose, And you guys are both like, look, we're
- 26:05Speaker 2: really sorry, Like me too, but we've got stuff to do.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Sorry, Yeah, that's not tough love, Like I want you
- 26:12Speaker 2: to love your life.
- 26:14Speaker 3: He's out. You can absolutely sorry, No, that's okay, but
- 26:17Speaker 3: I do. You can't go back and fix things, but
- 26:19Speaker 3: I really am. I get stressed for people who are
- 26:23Speaker 3: who just let their partners do all the finance stuff
- 26:25Speaker 3: and then like, if something happens, it is so risky
- 26:28Speaker 3: because then you're like, I have no idea. If not,
- 26:30Speaker 3: I don't know, I don't know where to start and
- 26:32Speaker 3: know what to do, which is a reasonable thing to feel.
- 26:35Speaker 3: I hope that your partner is like, let me help you,
- 26:37Speaker 3: because we've built a life together and now you're just
- 26:40Speaker 3: kind of like on your own. So I totally understand.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I think it's worth mentioning that I'm noticing people are
- 26:46Speaker 3: getting like harder and harder on themselves when the economy
- 26:49Speaker 3: or the cost of living is getting higher and higher.
- 26:51Speaker 3: But it's like some things are completely out of our control.
- 26:54Speaker 3: We can't help that. Sometimes you can hustle and hustle
- 26:56Speaker 3: and hustle. The cost of living is so extreme. It's
- 27:00Speaker 3: not on us. It's actually just really hard to live
- 27:02Speaker 3: right now. So I think there's a little bit of
- 27:05Speaker 3: maybe it's a little bit of that too going on.
- 27:06Speaker 3: So just what I'm saying is it's hard enough, don't
- 27:10Speaker 3: be hard on yourself as well. But I think exactly
- 27:13Speaker 3: as Jess says, try and see if there's anything that's
- 27:15Speaker 3: like unrealistic in your budget. But I've also noticed that
- 27:18Speaker 3: like honestly opening a billion Savers accounts with different names
- 27:23Speaker 3: for each account and then putting money in there, so
- 27:26Speaker 3: it's a lot easy to see, oh, I only have
- 27:29Speaker 3: ten dollars for groceries this week, and then once that
- 27:32Speaker 3: ten dollars right out, you're like, Okay, what am I
- 27:33Speaker 3: dipping into? Sometimes you don't know what you're dipping into
- 27:36Speaker 3: when there's just money in your account and you're like, oh,
- 27:39Speaker 3: I'm sure that's fine, and then a bill comes and
- 27:41Speaker 3: you're like, oh, my God, I have no money for that.
- 27:43Speaker 3: But if it's in the bill's account, it's like I
- 27:45Speaker 3: know that I'm dipping into bills. I know that I
- 27:47Speaker 3: have to make that back, you know what I mean?
- 27:50Speaker 3: And some people, Yeah, that's exactly how I set mine
- 27:53Speaker 3: up to you. Yeah, it was good memory.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I'm a psycho memory, great memory.
- 27:59Speaker 3: So I think something like that where you can see
- 28:00Speaker 3: where you're taking it out of, because then you kind
- 28:04Speaker 3: of like it kind of makes more sense if you
- 28:06Speaker 3: ever get to a place where you like, I can't
- 28:08Speaker 3: of calld this. That makes sense because I took it
- 28:09Speaker 3: out when I had to buy this and blah blah
- 28:11Speaker 3: blah blah blah. Yeah, but don't be hard on yourself.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Basically, yeah, could.
- 28:15Speaker 3: We please perhaps here a juicy DM.
- 28:18Speaker 2: We can, of course hear a juicy DM. Are you
- 28:20Speaker 2: ready to astrapped in? So this week's one high queens.
- 28:24Speaker 2: I've always lived paycheck to paycheck, but I found she's
- 28:27Speaker 2: on the money in the last year, and I am
- 28:28Speaker 2: proud to say I am making changes for the better.
- 28:31Speaker 2: What I didn't expect was how much it would change
- 28:34Speaker 2: how I see the people around me. I'm realizing my
- 28:37Speaker 2: friendship group is toxic when it comes to money, there's
- 28:41Speaker 2: a lot of spending beyond their means, normalizing consumer debt,
- 28:44Speaker 2: and no interest in improving their situation. They're not bad people,
- 28:48Speaker 2: but being around that energy makes it so hard for
- 28:52Speaker 2: me to stay on track. I hate feeling like this
- 28:55Speaker 2: because I don't want to sound judgmental, but I want
- 28:57Speaker 2: to surround myself with people who want better for them
- 29:00Speaker 2: else I wouldn't even know how to find these kinds
- 29:02Speaker 2: of friends, and I don't want to throw away years
- 29:05Speaker 2: of friendship. Can you please help?
- 29:07Speaker 3: It's such a hard situation.
- 29:09Speaker 5: I think you need to acknowledge that you do sometimes
- 29:11Speaker 5: outgrow friends, and that's okay if your lives move in
- 29:14Speaker 5: different directions, if you have different values. Because you were
- 29:16Speaker 5: the sum of the seven people you spend the most
- 29:18Speaker 5: time with, I think is what that study says.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Like your habits, your behaviors.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I don't even have seven friends.
- 29:24Speaker 4: What does that mean.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Some of the one, two, three of us that we
- 29:28Speaker 3: spend the most time a elite. You're doing pretty well,
- 29:32Speaker 3: but you know so.
- 29:33Speaker 5: I think that the people you do surround yourself with
- 29:35Speaker 5: really have a huge impact on your ability to meet
- 29:38Speaker 5: and achieve your goals. With that being said, you also
- 29:40Speaker 5: can absolutely have friends that I don't want to say
- 29:44Speaker 5: service different parts of you, because like a friendship is
- 29:47Speaker 5: not a transaction, but friends that you have, friends that
- 29:51Speaker 5: support or fit in with different parts of your personality,
- 29:54Speaker 5: Like no one person is everything to everyone, and so
- 29:57Speaker 5: it may be that those friends that you've had for
- 29:59Speaker 5: a long time, you have a great time when you're together.
- 30:02Speaker 5: You love a board games night, you love an adventure,
- 30:05Speaker 5: you love something like that, and that's okay. And maybe
- 30:08Speaker 5: finding your people who have a similar passion for personal
- 30:13Speaker 5: growth and making these kinds of life changes, being budget
- 30:17Speaker 5: conscious and all of those things, maybe it's you need
- 30:19Speaker 5: to bring additions in rather than necessarily having to let go.
- 30:24Speaker 5: But with that being said, you did use the word toxic,
- 30:26Speaker 5: and I do think if someone is toxic, you maybe
- 30:27Speaker 5: do need to give them the boot, so you don't.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Leave that to your best DISAGRETIONI In terms of how
- 30:32Speaker 3: you meet.
- 30:32Speaker 5: People, I think like online communities, the dishes in the
- 30:34Speaker 5: one community is full of hundreds of thousands of incredible people.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Lots of them have become real friends, lots of real life.
- 30:41Speaker 5: Absolutely, maybe one day we'll bring back the events and
- 30:43Speaker 5: you can meet people then, but also just like through
- 30:45Speaker 5: the group itself, having conversations if you're not in the
- 30:48Speaker 5: Facebook group. For anyone who's new, we have a Facebook
- 30:50Speaker 5: group with over three hundred thousand in credits, wild people,
- 30:53Speaker 5: so many people, and we have threads where you can
- 30:56Speaker 5: comment and share ideas, and it's a great way to
- 30:58Speaker 5: form connections with others. There is what I would perhaps
- 31:01Speaker 5: suggest in real life. Otherwise, do think that you enjoy
- 31:05Speaker 5: meet people out and about in the real world. I
- 31:08Speaker 5: think like the power of a shared interest, a shared
- 31:11Speaker 5: passion can connect you with someone in a really meaningful way.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Also like sports teams, like social sport. All of my
- 31:19Speaker 3: friends came from Frisbee everything, all of my close friends
- 31:22Speaker 3: and my boyfriend.
- 31:22Speaker 2: I think it's a really, that's a really. Yeah, it's
- 31:24Speaker 2: a great Frisbee Frisbee get a whole family. Yeah, pretty much.
- 31:29Speaker 3: I can completely understand the feeling of like maybe like
- 31:33Speaker 3: learning something new or like finding a way of life
- 31:36Speaker 3: that feels better for you, and then looking at the
- 31:38Speaker 3: people that aren't doing those things and now seeing them
- 31:41Speaker 3: in a different kind of light and being like, oh
- 31:43Speaker 3: you like you are not changing, are not growing, and
- 31:47Speaker 3: then feeling this kind of like almost like and I
- 31:51Speaker 3: don't mean to sound bad, but like self righteousness almost
- 31:54Speaker 3: in a way that is not It's not bad. I
- 31:59Speaker 3: think it's your growth. You feel like the people around
- 32:01Speaker 3: you aren't growing if they are toxic in a way
- 32:03Speaker 3: that is like they're pushing you to ignore all that
- 32:08Speaker 3: you've learned and pushing you to still be bad with
- 32:10Speaker 3: money and like really not encouraging your growth, and also
- 32:16Speaker 3: kind of like looking down.
- 32:17Speaker 2: On you for changing in any kind of way.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Then that is bad and you do need to unfortunately
- 32:21Speaker 3: give them the boot, I would say. But if they
- 32:23Speaker 3: are just not changing their own behavior but still supporting
- 32:26Speaker 3: you and still being good friends in every other way,
- 32:29Speaker 3: I don't see any problem with that. I think that
- 32:31Speaker 3: it can be really hard to watch, especially knowing what
- 32:34Speaker 3: you know now. But a friend told me this is
- 32:37Speaker 3: more like in the sustainability environmental space. She said, the
- 32:41Speaker 3: best way to spread awareness is to just do and
- 32:47Speaker 3: do it kindly and do it gently, and people can
- 32:50Speaker 3: maybe sometimes watch on and be curious and then want
- 32:52Speaker 3: to change their own behavior. Yeah, but just doing and
- 32:54Speaker 3: not telling to that, yeah, like just like being this
- 32:58Speaker 3: kind of way, and like I'm we're talking about the environmental,
- 33:01Speaker 3: but this can apply in your situation. But let's say
- 33:04Speaker 3: like packing your own lunch using your reasonable straw, Like
- 33:07Speaker 3: people will see what you're doing in the financial space
- 33:11Speaker 3: and eventually see like, oh, this is probably like a
- 33:14Speaker 3: better way to live in terms of being a little
- 33:16Speaker 3: bit more stress free and then being curious but forcing
- 33:21Speaker 3: it or telling people, And I know for sure you
- 33:24Speaker 3: will not change unless you're ready to. And I'm still
- 33:29Speaker 3: not super ready, so I still am not super changing.
- 33:33Speaker 3: But you can't like push that on people. They just
- 33:36Speaker 3: have to move in their own way.
- 33:38Speaker 2: What do you think? I agree? I find it really
- 33:40Speaker 2: hard because you use the word toxic, but then you
- 33:42Speaker 2: also like backed up a little bit of what toxic
- 33:45Speaker 2: meant to you. So you said they're spending a lot
- 33:48Speaker 2: beyond their means, you know, they normalize their consumer debt
- 33:51Speaker 2: and like they've got no interest in improving their situations.
- 33:55Speaker 2: And that's fine, but people don't know what they don't know,
- 33:58Speaker 2: and that I'm just going to pretend it's a very
- 34:02Speaker 2: simple toxic thing, because like I have had genuinely toxic
- 34:05Speaker 2: friends who have questioned, why would you do that? Don't
- 34:08Speaker 2: you find it embarrassing? Posting on social media, or why
- 34:11Speaker 2: do you even care so much about budgeting? You're so
- 34:13Speaker 2: stuck up rah rah, Like that to me is toxic,
- 34:16Speaker 2: need to get out of my life, toxic, toxic in
- 34:20Speaker 2: your situation. Seems they just don't have access to the
- 34:23Speaker 2: tools and the resources that you've discovered. And I think
- 34:26Speaker 2: that you can gently lead by example, like what Beck
- 34:28Speaker 2: was saying when they suggest let's go out for dinner,
- 34:30Speaker 2: be like, oh my goodness, no, I really want to
- 34:33Speaker 2: want to put more pressure on you guys saying the
- 34:35Speaker 2: other day finance is really tough. Why don't we have
- 34:37Speaker 2: dinner at my place? Small things that are steps in
- 34:40Speaker 2: the right direction, I think could be a really good thing.
- 34:42Speaker 2: And at the end of the day, just because they
- 34:44Speaker 2: have normalized consumer debt for them doesn't mean you need
- 34:48Speaker 2: to engage in it. It's like I have friends that vape.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Just because they vape does not mean I have to vape.
- 34:55Speaker 2: That's just not of interest to me. Is it a
- 34:57Speaker 2: bad thing? I couldn't care less your body? True, But
- 35:00Speaker 2: I think the same comes to money, Like if they're
- 35:03Speaker 2: making decisions you wouldn't make, that does not impact you,
- 35:07Speaker 2: Like that is actually, frankly none of your business unless
- 35:11Speaker 2: they are encouraging you and you know, maybe not making
- 35:14Speaker 2: you feel good about the decisions that you're making, at
- 35:16Speaker 2: which point you would have to let them know that
- 35:19Speaker 2: they're overstepping their boundaries, or that you're not comfortable with
- 35:22Speaker 2: the way they're communicating, or even just going, oh my gosh,
- 35:25Speaker 2: like that's so crazy. I listened to an episode about
- 35:28Speaker 2: consumer debt the other day and how bad it can
- 35:30Speaker 2: be for you. Maybe you want to have a listen.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Here's link to a podcast. So for me, it's not
- 35:34Speaker 2: necessarily toxic cut these people out, but yeah, maybe you
- 35:38Speaker 2: do want to start surrounding yourself with people who are
- 35:40Speaker 2: more like you. Like when you find a value that
- 35:42Speaker 2: you have, or you find a hobby or an interest,
- 35:45Speaker 2: you want other people to bounce off. Like it's kind
- 35:47Speaker 2: of lonely doing this on your own, but like how fun.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Like Jess and I talk about it all the time
- 35:51Speaker 2: her thirteen saver accounts. What you're up to? How does
- 35:53Speaker 2: that work? Oh, you're doing that all smart. I want
- 35:55Speaker 2: to do that too, Like you can find more friends
- 35:58Speaker 2: like that. You do have to look for them, though,
- 36:00Speaker 2: because I find that making friends as an adult is
- 36:02Speaker 2: ridiculously hard.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Yeah. Much harder than when you're young.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Oh so, first question I asked was what would you
- 36:08Speaker 2: do if you were our community member? And forty percent
- 36:10Speaker 2: of you said I'd stay friends. I'd just keep money
- 36:12Speaker 2: out of the conversations. Thirty nine percent said I would
- 36:15Speaker 2: set firm boundaries and then prioritize me. Thirteen percent said
- 36:19Speaker 2: be honest about how you're feeling, and eight percent said
- 36:22Speaker 2: you would quietly distance yourselves. I then asked, do your
- 36:25Speaker 2: friendship support the future you're trying to build? Sixty eight
- 36:29Speaker 2: percent said sometimes, but not everything in everyone. Twenty six
- 36:33Speaker 2: percent said yeah, we're aligned, three percent said not really,
- 36:36Speaker 2: and two percent said I've changed friends because of this.
- 36:40Speaker 2: I don't even know how to change friends.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Anither bit an awkward one, isn't it?
- 36:43Speaker 2: Yeah, like, I totally get it. Then we asked the
- 36:45Speaker 2: community or. I asked, what's your two cents? As I
- 36:48Speaker 2: always do. First person said, just introduce your friends to
- 36:51Speaker 2: She's on the Money. Boom, money problems solved, go get
- 36:54Speaker 2: rich together absolutely. Next perstone said, they're friends, you're not married.
- 36:59Speaker 2: How they spend their money is none of your business.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Next person is using another She's on the money quote.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Rising tide lifts soul ships. Yes, you could be an
- 37:09Speaker 2: inspiration and set examples for when they are ready. So
- 37:13Speaker 2: that's basically what Beck was saying. Another person said, don't
- 37:16Speaker 2: define your friends by their money habits. They are still
- 37:19Speaker 2: your friends, so focus on that is a very true.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Next person said, I have lots of different friends with
- 37:24Speaker 2: lots of different money and life goals and aspirations. It
- 37:27Speaker 2: doesn't matter. And then the last one I'll share is
- 37:30Speaker 2: this person said, I ask them if they think their
- 37:32Speaker 2: financial decisions are smart, and now they're slowly getting better.
- 37:36Speaker 4: There you go.
- 37:38Speaker 2: I feel like that's a good place to be in, Like,
- 37:40Speaker 2: let's just lead by example. Yeah, it doesn't mean people
- 37:43Speaker 2: have to follow, Yeah, totally. Anyway, I feel like that's
- 37:46Speaker 2: a really great place to leave it. Welcome to twenty
- 37:49Speaker 2: twenty six, my friends. I'm so excited to be here.
