Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everybody, Emily Buddy checking in here for five Minute Friday,
- 0:24Speaker 1: coming to you from the A G Studio. Man, this
- 0:29Speaker 1: was a good week for me, and I was like
- 0:31Speaker 1: sitting here as I was thinking about what I was
- 0:34Speaker 1: going to say for this episode. I don't want to
- 0:37Speaker 1: come off as like ungrateful or that like life has
- 0:40Speaker 1: just been a series of like blaw lately, but it's
- 0:44Speaker 1: been a long time since I've been able to take
- 0:47Speaker 1: a step back and be like, I am so content
- 0:50Speaker 1: at the conclusion of this week, Like I feel very
- 0:52Speaker 1: fulfilled and excited, and I think it just goes hand
- 0:55Speaker 1: in hand with all of the fun things that are
- 0:57Speaker 1: coming down the pipe for me, both personally professionally in
- 1:00Speaker 1: the next coming weeks. I feel like myself and that
- 1:05Speaker 1: feels really really good. My word of the week this week,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and it's what I want to talk about for today's
- 1:10Speaker 1: installment of Five Minute Friday is reframe. I was having
- 1:14Speaker 1: a chat with someone the other day and I was
- 1:16Speaker 1: talking to them about a relationship in my life that
- 1:19Speaker 1: wasn't exactly or is not exactly how I kind of
- 1:23Speaker 1: wish that it could be. And I've said this on
- 1:26Speaker 1: the show before, but it takes a big person to
- 1:28Speaker 1: allow someone in your life to play a role that
- 1:31Speaker 1: you wish that they wouldn't, whether that be because maybe
- 1:34Speaker 1: you have, for example, feelings for someone but it's just
- 1:37Speaker 1: a plotonic relationship, or perhaps you really dig someone's vibe
- 1:42Speaker 1: and you hope that you can be close friends, but
- 1:44Speaker 1: they have some stuff going on in their life and
- 1:46Speaker 1: that is not really something that they are interested in
- 1:48Speaker 1: pursuing at the moment, whatever the circumstance may be, I, myself,
- 1:53Speaker 1: as i'm sure many of you do as well, have
- 1:55Speaker 1: some of these relationships in my ecosystem. And the person
- 1:59Speaker 1: that I was talking too about one of them in particular,
- 2:02Speaker 1: was saying to me, well, she asked, how can you
- 2:05Speaker 1: reframe that relationship in your life? Like, instead of focusing
- 2:09Speaker 1: on the negatives about this particular situation, maybe you can
- 2:13Speaker 1: think about what it is that that relationship can provide
- 2:17Speaker 1: for you as it is now. And I stopped, and
- 2:21Speaker 1: I thought about that. And I'm not saying that in
- 2:24Speaker 1: every single situation. It is easy to reframe things and
- 2:28Speaker 1: seek out the good, especially in a moment when you
- 2:30Speaker 1: may be feeling hurt or frustrated or emotional or what
- 2:33Speaker 1: have you. But what if you do choose to ask yourself,
- 2:39Speaker 1: how is this working for me? What can this situation
- 2:43Speaker 1: do for me as it is now? Rather than being
- 2:47Speaker 1: so wrapped up in changing things. I personally I identify as
- 2:52Speaker 1: a fixer, so I know how that feels. But instead
- 2:56Speaker 1: of focusing on how can this be different? Just find
- 3:01Speaker 1: the joy in what it is right now, don't create
- 3:04Speaker 1: that extra work for yourself, and see how that feels.
- 3:08Speaker 1: It's something I've been thinking a lot about and maybe
- 3:10Speaker 1: it's a strategy that can help you as well. The
- 3:14Speaker 1: prompt for you this week it's super simple. What is
- 3:17Speaker 1: one relationship in your life that maybe you need to
- 3:21Speaker 1: think about a little bit differently that you could use
- 3:23Speaker 1: some reframing on. What is one relationship in your life
- 3:29Speaker 1: that maybe you need to look at through a different
- 3:32Speaker 1: lens so that it can better serve you? And now
- 3:37Speaker 1: a listener question.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Hey, Emily, I know you still contribute writing pieces for
- 3:42Speaker 2: other outlets, but what originally inspired you to transition from
- 3:46Speaker 2: writing and editing over to podcasting for your main day
- 3:49Speaker 2: to day gig? Hey?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Hey, so I shed some light on this in the
- 3:55Speaker 1: episode that I released, the bonus episode kind of detailing
- 3:58Speaker 1: my story, my way loss, just you know, my life
- 4:02Speaker 1: over the last decade or so, talking about career.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Et cetera.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So I'm going to link to that in the show notes,
- 4:07Speaker 1: but to put this in just to shed some light
- 4:11Speaker 1: on this, I guess I decided to start a podcast
- 4:15Speaker 1: because of what I felt was a craving and a
- 4:20Speaker 1: need for another creative outlet. As a freelance journalist, it
- 4:25Speaker 1: certainly can be a little exhausting to constantly be creating
- 4:30Speaker 1: things based on what a particular brand needs, and I
- 4:34Speaker 1: wanted to express myself. I wanted to have a corner
- 4:37Speaker 1: of the Internet where I could just be me, a
- 4:40Speaker 1: corner of the Internet where I got to make the
- 4:42Speaker 1: calls and I wasn't feeling, you know, underpaid and undervalue.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Did not just say that. Goodness. I love so many
- 4:49Speaker 1: of the amazing editors and the teams and the brands
- 4:52Speaker 1: that I've been able to work for over the last
- 4:54Speaker 1: handful of years. But it just feels good to own something, right,
- 4:58Speaker 1: to have my name on something, to have something that
- 5:01Speaker 1: feels so special to me and every fiber in my being.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I want to make sure that I throw into the
- 5:10Speaker 1: mix here that hurdle and this show. I didn't start
- 5:15Speaker 1: it thinking that it would be something that would become
- 5:18Speaker 1: my career. I really just got into it looking for
- 5:22Speaker 1: that creative outlet right it felt right for me at
- 5:25Speaker 1: the time. Now, fast forward four years later, this show,
- 5:30Speaker 1: this community, everything that goes along with Hurdle in person
- 5:34Speaker 1: events like it's more than I ever dreamed of. And
- 5:36Speaker 1: I do believe that there's just so much more for
- 5:39Speaker 1: us to go on this runway. So you know, sometimes
- 5:43Speaker 1: you just got to take a leap of faith and
- 5:45Speaker 1: trust you and trust your gut and see what happens
- 5:49Speaker 1: from there. And well, all of that is what led
- 5:52Speaker 1: me to this spot. That's it for this week. Wow,
- 5:56Speaker 1: a five minute Friday that's almost actually five minutes. Make
- 6:01Speaker 1: sure you're following one with Hurdle over on Insta It's
